Aging, Neuropsychology, and Cognition Impact Factor: 1.523 (© Thomson Reuters, Journal Citation Reports 2008®) The purposes of Aging, Neuropsychology, and Cognition are to (a) publish research on both the normal and dysfunctional aspects of cognitive development in adulthood and aging, and (b) promote the integration of theories, methods, and research findings between the fields of cognitive gerontology and neuropsychology. The primary emphasis of the journal is to publish original empirical research. Occasionally, theoretical or methodological papers, critical reviews of a content area, or theoretically relevant case studies will also be published. Emphases of interest include information processing mechanisms, intellectual abilities, the impact of injury or disease on performance, cognitive training, cognitive and pharmacological approaches to treatment and rehabilitation, metacognition, and the social and personal aspects of cognitive functioning. Articles on both normal and dysfunctional development that are relevant to the interface between cognitive gerontology and neuropsychology are particularly welcome. Multiple approaches to issues of aging and cognition (e.g., basic, applied, clinical), and multiple methodologies (e.g., cross-sectional, longitudinal, experimental, multivariate correlation) are appropriate.

CALL FOR SPECIAL ISSUE PROPOSALS Cognition & Emotion has a strong tradition of publishing exceptional Special Issues, which the current editorial team are keen to continue. Each year at least one special issue will appear. To further ensure the publication of high-quality Special Issues, a more active policy will be followed: Rather than letting the selection and publication depend on individual initiatives, the Editors prefer a broader and open invitation. This open call is to invite researchers to submit proposals for a Cognition & Emotion Special Issue. With this call we want to invite proposals for Special Issues on topics related to the focus of the journal. In general, a Special Issue should have a well-articulated unifying theme and should reflect the state-of-the-art, currently relevant and leading edge topics in cognition and emotion research. It will typically include a review article of the research in the area of focus. Selection of Special Issues will be made by the Editors-in-Chief, in consultation with the Associate Editors. A decision will be made on February 1st of each year, taking into account the proposals that have been received before December 31st of the preceding year. See website below for further details.

European Journal of Cognitive Psychology The official journal of the European Society for Cognitive Psychology (ESCOP) The European Journal of Cognitive Psychology is the official journal of the European Society for Cognitive Psychology, which aims to encourage the exchange and integration of ideas, research and training in cognitive psychology. The journal publishes reports of empirical work (including brief reports), theoretical contributions and reviews of the literature in all areas of cognitive psychology including applied cognitive psychology. Peer commentaries sometimes accompany theoretical papers in an attempt to stimulate lively debate about controversial issues within cognitive psychology. The European Journal of Cognitive Psychology is an international journal, with increasing numbers of submissions from outside Europe, especially North America and Japan. The Editor is anxious to publish high quality papers from authors both within and outside Europe. This journal is of interest to experimental cognitive psychologists, applied psychologists, psycholinguists, computer scientists, cognitive neuropsychologists and those working in allied disciplines. SPECIAL ISSUES Issues devoted to a single topic are regularly published in this journal; these are sent free to subscribers in that year, and are also available to purchase separately as books for non-subscribers, either via the website below, or using the Order Form on page 40 of this catalogue. Ageing, Cognition, and Neuroscience Guest Editors: Soledad Ballesteros, Lars-Göran Nilsson and Patrick Lemaire Volume 21, Issues 2-3 (May 2009) HB ISBN 978-1-84872-707-6 £39.95 $64.95 Ageing is a universal complex multifaceted process that profoundly affects mind and brain of all individuals. Important discoveries are being made at different levels of research on cognitive aging: from the molecular/genetic level, to the cell, the synapse, the network, and the processing of information at the cognitive level. The ultimate goal in cognitive neuroscience is to understand this whole set of stages. We are not yet there. Most studies conducted so far have collected data at single levels only. One ambition with this Special Issue is to encourage researchers to report cognitive data that are related to neural data at other levels. The research reported may be empirical, theoretical or computational. It may focus on normal cognitive aging or pathology. Verbalizing Visual Memories Guest Editors: Toby J. Lloyd-Jones, Maria A. Brandimonte and Karl-Heinz Bäuml Volume 20, Issue 3, 2008 HB ISBN: 978-1-84169-853-3 £29.95 $58.95 The Special Issue examines the role of verbalization in visual memory. It is clear that verbal processes influence the encoding, storage and retrieval of visual information. The state-of-the-art is that we are just beginning to understand the rich complexity of the problem. Bridging Cognitive Science and Education: Learning, Memory, and Metacognition Guest Editors: Lisa Son and André Vandierendonck Volume 19, Issue 5 (September 2007) HB ISBN 978-1-84169-835-9 £49.95 $90.00 This Special Issue brings together researchers aiming to bridge laboratory data with real world learning practices, each providing recent and crucial information concerning the improvement of learning.

Infancy The official journal of the International Society on Infant Studies (ISIS) Impact Factor: 1.388 (© Thomson Reuters, Journal Citation Reports 2008®) Infancy emphasizes the highest quality original research on normal and aberrant infant development during the first two years. Research from children older than two years of age may be included if the results add to an understanding of infant development. Most of the research will involve human infants, although some infant animal work may also be included. The criteria for acceptance will be rigorous science with logical arguments and conclusions. Any theoretical approach is welcome; the reporting and discussion of statistical effect size when appropriate, as recommended in the APA publication manual, is required. The emphasis of Infancy is on original research articles and brief reports, but target articles with peer commentary will also be included, as well as thematic collections with peer commentary. A unique aspect of Infancy is that authors will have the opportunity to submit additional archival material such as color photographs, sound files, QuickTime movies, and large data sets to the companion web page, Infancy Archives – www.infancyarchives.com.
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION Infancy publishes four classes of articles: Research Articles: Original research articles that present recent research findings (typically multiple experiments) related to infancy or infant development. Brief Reports: Short research articles (up to 3,000 words of text) that present recent research findings related to infancy or infant development. Target Articles With Peer Commentary: Theoretical or research-based articles that present recent research findings and/or theoretical ideas related to infancy or infant development. Peer commentary will follow target articles; authors are invited to submit suggestions for peer commentators. Thematic Collections With Peer Commentary: Three or four research-based articles from independent laboratories that contribute new findings on a common topic related to infancy or infant development. Thematic collections will include peer commentary as well. Authors are invited to submit suggestions for commentators along with the submitted collection of articles. Blinded manuscripts are to be prepared according to the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association and submitted electronically as a single PDF file (to ensure that all special symbols are formatted correctly) to Dr. Martha Ann Bell at infancy@vt.edu. The title page should carry only the title, a running head, and the abstract (no more than 200 words). In the accompanying email message the corresponding author should provide his/her full contact information and the following elements: title; full authorship with affiliations; abstract; a statement that the paper has neither been published nor simultaneously submitted for publication elsewhere; and a statement that the research complied with American Psychological Association (APA) ethical standards for the treatment of participants. Before submitting, read the Instructions for Authors at the website below.

Journal of Cognition and Development The official journal of the Cognitive Development Society (CDS) The Journal of Cognition and Development is the official journal of the Cognitive Development Society (CDS). Some CDS members are concerned with basic research or theory; others focus on policy issues and practical applications. The range of interests includes cognitive development during all stages of life, and we seek to understand ontogenetic processes in both humans and nonhumans. Finally, their interests encompass typical as well as atypical development, and we attempt to characterize both biological and cultural influences on cognitive change and continuity. The relationship between the journal and the society is symbiotic in that the journal enhances the field of cognitive development by providing a prestigious forum for innovative research and theory. It publishes the very best articles on all aspects of cognitive development. In addition to empirical reports, it features theoretical essays (occasionally accompanied by peer commentaries), and essay reviews of new and significant books. Criteria for acceptance of submitted manuscripts include: • Relevance of the work to issues of broad interest • Substance of the argument (including methodological rigor and support for conclusions drawn) • Ingenuity of the ideas or approach • Quality of expression. The Journal is of particular interest to psychologists, cognitive scientists, neuroscientists, linguists, anthropologists, and anyone else interested in the origins and development of cognition.

Language Acquisition A Journal of Developmental Linguistics The research published in Language Acquisition: A Journal of Developmental Linguistics makes a clear contribution to linguistic theory by increasing our understanding of how language is acquired. The journal focuses on the acquisition of syntax, semantics, phonology, and morphology, and considers theoretical, experimental, and computational perspectives. Coverage includes solutions to the logical problem of language acquisition, as it arises for particular grammatical proposals; discussion of acquisition data relevant to current linguistic questions; and perspectives derived from theorydriven studies of second language acquisition, language-impaired speakers, and other domains of cognition. In addition to brief and full-length research articles, the editors invite authors of recent dissertations on language acquisition to submit a synopsis for publication in Language Acquisition. This journal will appeal to researchers and professionals in linguistics and psycholinguistics, and developmentalists. NEW SPECIAL SECTION ANNOUNCEMENT In 2009 Language and Cognitive Processes (LCP) will broaden its remit by publishing two additional issues a year devoted to the Cognitive Neuroscience of Language (co-edited by David Poeppel and Lorraine K. Tyler). The development of cognitive neuroscience methodologies has significantly broadened the empirical scope of experimental language studies. Both hemodynamic imaging and electrophysiological approaches provide new perspectives on the representation and processing of language, and add important constraints on the development of theoretical accounts of language function.

CALL FOR PAPERS AND SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS In light of the strong interest in and growing influence of these new tools LCP will publish two issues a year on the Cognitive Neuroscience of Language. All types of articles will be considered, including reviews, whose submission is encouraged. Submissions should exemplify the subject in its most straightforward sense: linking good cognitive science and good neuroscience to answer key questions about the nature of language and cognition. See below for manuscript submission instructions. Make sure your paper is clearly marked ‘Cognitive Neuroscience of Language’. MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION Papers should consist of original work which has not been published or presently submitted elsewhere. All submissions should be made online at the Language and Cognitive Processes Manuscript Central site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/plcp. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre. All submissions should be in Word format. Authors should stipulate whether their paper should be considered as a full paper, a position paper, a short paper, or a commentary. Short papers and commentaries should not exceed 3000 words (excluding bibliography). Papers will be reviewed by a minimum of two referees, at least one of whom will be a member of the Editorial Advisory Board. Before submitting, read the Instructions for Authors at the journal’s website (see foot of page 18).

Language Learning and Development The official journal of the Society for Language Development (SLD) Language Learning and Development serves as a vehicle for interaction among the broad community of scholars and practitioners who investigate language learning, including language learning in infancy, childhood, and across the lifespan; language in both typical and atypical populations and in both native- and second-language learning. Language Learning and Development welcomes scholars who pursue diverse approaches to understanding all aspects of language acquisition, including biological, social, and cross-cultural influences, and who employ experimental, observational, ethnographic, comparative, neuroscientific, and formal methods of investigation. The journal is multidisciplinary and seeks to examine language development in all of its many guises. Among the many issues Language Learning and Development explores are biological versus environmental factors in language development; learning in humans versus animals; learning of signed versus spoken language; computer models of learning; and how neurotechnology and visualization of the brain inform our understanding of language learning and development. This journal will appeal to scholars in psychology, linguistics, computer science, cognitive science, education, speech and hearing sciences/communication disorders, and anthropology.
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION Language Learning and Development welcomes papers that take diverse approaches to the problem of language learning and development (including biological, cognitive, linguistic, social, and cross-cultural perspectives) and that employ whatever methods work to answer the question (e.g., experimental, observational, computational, ethnographic, comparative, neuroscience, or formal methods of investigation). Authors are encouraged to frame the facts they present in such a way that their significance for the language learning problem is clear, not only to those in the particular area, but to all readers. Papers will also need to articulate the assumptions on which they rest. To foster interdisciplinary exchange, we also welcome short commentaries on papers that appear in the journal to be published at the discretion of the editors. Submissions should be e-mailed to lld@uchicago.edu. Include in the e-mail the title of the paper, the authors, and the abstract. The preferred form of submission of the manuscript is a PDF file including all tables and figures, with special fonts (e.g., IPA) embedded. It is also possible to submit the manuscript and tables as a Word .doc or .rtf file, with figures in a separate file (see illustrations information below). After acceptance, a final version of the article will be required on diskette/CD as well as in hard copy. Before submitting, read the Instructions for Authors at the website below.

Memory Impact Factor: 1.403 (© Thomson Reuters, Journal Citation Reports 2008®) Memory publishes high quality papers in all areas of memory research. This includes experimental studies of memory (including laboratory-based research, everyday memory studies, and applied memory research), developmental, educational, neuropsychological, clinical and social research on memory. By representing all significant areas of memory research, the journal cuts across the traditional distinctions of psychological research. Memory therefore provides a unique venue for memory researchers to communicate their findings and ideas both to peers within their own research tradition in the study of memory, and also to the wider range of research communities with direct interest in human memory. SPECIAL ISSUES Issues devoted to a single topic are regularly published in this journal; these are sent free to subscribers in that year, and are also available to purchase separately as books for non-subscribers, either via the website below, or using the Order Form on page 40 of this catalogue. Episodic Memory and Healthy Aging Guest Editors: Celine Souchay, Moshe Naveh-Benjamin and Chris Moulin Volume 17, Issue 2 (2009) ISBN 978-1-84872-708-3 £39.95 $64.00 This volume provides interesting and novel findings on different aspects of episodic memory, including patterns of decline and sparing, heterogeneity in older adults’ memory performance, and cognitive and non-cognitive factors that potentially improve older adults’ memory performance. All manuscripts must be accompanied by a statement confirming that it has not been previously published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Submission of a paper is taken as acceptance by the author that it contains nothing libellous or infringes copyright. When a paper is accepted for publication the copyright will belong to the publisher. Before submitting, read the Instructions for Authors at the journal’s website (see foot of page 22).
Call for Papers! Special Issue on Silence and Memory Memory researchers often focus on what is spoken, but silences are also important elements in memory. Recent work suggests that what is not told, not rehearsed, and not spoken has implications for later memory, self, and identity. Moreover, that work further suggests that those implications are evident for both individuals and groups. We are seeking contributions to a special issue of Memory considering the implications of silence for memory. We are interested in a wide range of contributions, ranging from laboratory and experimental work to theoretical considerations, and on phenomena ranging
from retrieval-induced forgetting to cultural and social factors that influence the nature of silences. Interested individuals should submit an electronic copy of their manuscript through our online submissions website at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/pmem (selecting ‘Silence and Memory’ as the manuscript type). All manuscripts will be subject to editorial and peer-review before acceptance for the special issue. If you have any questions about the special issue, contact the Guest Editors Monisha Pasupathi (monisha.pasupathi@psych.utah.edu) and Kate McLean (Kate.McLean@wwu.edu).

To set off printed figurative text from nonfigurative use of (a) italicization (underlining in manuscripts) for indicating emphasis, (b) quotation marks for indicating quotations, and (c) capitalization for indicating headings and subheadings, authors should abide by the following conventions: Any sentence or phrase in which a word or words are intended as figurative should be set in quoted lower-case italics (e.g., “My soul is an enchanted boat,” “to let the cat out of the bag,” etc.). What are called metaphor themes or metaphor formulas should be set in quoted upper-case italics (e.g., “LIFE IS A JOURNEY,” “LOVE IS INSANITY,” etc.), with italicization indicated by underlining in the manuscript. Subordinate instances of these two sample themes should be set in quoted lower-case italics (“Our relationship has come a long way” and “He was madly in love with her,” respectively). In experimental reports that involve figurative and nonfigurative material or stimulus items, figurative material should be set as indicated above; nonfigurative material (e.g., literal “control” sentences) should be set in unquoted italics (e.g., This is a literal sentence). Social Neuroscience Now selected for inclusion in the Science Citation Index (© Thomson Reuters, Journal Citation Reports 2008®) Social Neuroscience features original empirical articles that examine how the brain mediates social cognition, interpersonal exchanges, affective/cognitive group interactions, and related topics that deal with social/personality psychology. The goal of the journal is to provide a place to publish empirical articles that intend to further our understanding of the role of the central nervous system in the development and maintenance of social behaviors. Submissions from all branches of neuroscience are encouraged, including (but not limited to) bio/neuropsychology, evolution, psychiatry, neurology, and neuroscience. Further, submissions that have brain-based empirical data in the fields of social and cognitive psychology, including social cognitive neuroscience, philosophy, or other humanities areas are encouraged. Articles published in Social Neuroscience cover all neuroscience techniques including neuroimaging methods (e.g., fMRI, PET, ERP, TMS), as well as more traditional neuroscience techniques (e.g., animal studies, case studies, psychiatric populations, post-mortem studies, pharmaceutical, agonist /antagonist). Social Neuroscience does not publish articles that report only behavioral data. The journal focuses on both molar (i.e., regional cortical localization, neural networks) and molecular (i.e., neurotransmitter) research. All social behaviors are covered including all aspects of inter- and intra-personal relationships. Both environmental and genetic influences are presented. Abnormal behaviors and populations are focused on in terms of understanding social/brain relationships. Language, memory, attention and perception are appropriate topics if they relate to specific social behaviors or cognitions. Studies that approach social neuroscience from an environmental or genetic approach are equally appropriate, and related topics that deal with the interface of neuroscientific and social/personality investigations. SPECIAL ISSUES The Mirror Neuron System Guest Editors: Christian Keysers and Luciano Fadiga Volume 3, Issues 3-4 (2008) ISBN: 978-1-84169-865-6 £49.95 $89.95 This special issue collects some of the most representative works on the mirror-neuron system to give a panoramic view on current research and to stimulate new experiments in this exciting field. MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION Authors are encouraged to submit papers electronically to expedite the peer review process. Please email your paper, saved in a standard document format type such as Word or PDF, to Duncan.Nicholas@psypress.co.uk. You may also contact the Editorial Assistant by phone on (0)20 7017 7730. Social Neuroscience articles have a maximum limit of 9000 words. This 9000 words is to include main text and references, but excludes title, author's contact details, abstract, figures, tables, captions and footnotes. Before submitting, read the Instructions for Authors at the website below.

Thinking & Reasoning Impact Factor: 1.097 (© Thomson Reuters, Journal Citation Reports 2008®) Thinking & Reasoning is an international journal dedicated to the understanding of human thought processes, with particular emphasis on studies on reasoning. Whilst the primary focus is on psychological studies of thinking, contributions are welcome from philosophers, artificial intelligence researchers and other cognitive scientists whose work bears upon the central concerns of the journal. Topics published in the journal include studies of deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, problem solving, decision making, probability judgement, conceptual thinking and the influence of language and culture on thought. Papers will be accepted for publication on the basis of scientific quality, clarity of exposition and contribution to theoretical understanding of human thinking. Contributions may take any of the following forms: • Empirical studies using any methodology appropriate to questions addressed, including experimental or observational methods and utilising either quantitative or qualitative analyses. • Theoretical contributions pertinent to issues in the empirical study of human thought but not reporting new data. • Critical reviews of research literatures which synthesise findings reported by different authors and which derive new insights or permit conclusions which enhance understanding of theoretical issues. • Critical discussion of papers published in Thinking & Reasoning and short reports or notes on other relevant issues. • Essay-style extended book reviews, for books of unusual interest to the readership. Normally commissioned, but proposals can be sent to the editor. SPECIAL ISSUES Issues devoted to a single topic are occasionally published in this journal; these are sent free to subscribers in that year, and are also available to purchase separately as books for non-subscribers. Visual Cognition Impact Factor: 1.727 (© Thomson Reuters, Journal Citation Reports 2008®) Visual Cognition publishes new empirical research that increases theoretical understanding of human visual cognition. Studies may be concerned with any aspect of visual cognition such as perceptual organization; Object, face, and scene recognition; visual attention and search; short-term and long-term visual memory; visual word recognition and reading; eye movement control and active vision; dynamic vision; and visual imagery. The typical study will use behavioral methods, but papers reporting studies of alternative populations or based on methods such as neuroimaging (e.g., fMRI, ERP, MEG) or modeling (computational or mathematical) that bear on visual cognition are also published. Articles take two forms. Full Articles typically involve multiple experiments and a relatively in-depth discussion of the theoretical implications of the work. There are no length restrictions though authors should strive for brevity. Brief Articles report new and unexpected empirical findings of broad interest and will be favored for novelty of approach or method. Manuscripts submitted as Brief Articles will receive a simple accept or reject disposition in the shortest possible time, and when accepted will receive priority for publication. Brief Articles have a maximum of 3000 words including abstract, notes, captions, and appendices, but excluding bibliography. The bibliography for a Brief Article should not exceed 30 references, and figures and tables should be used sparingly. A word count should be included on the title page. In addition each chapter includes:
The Student’s Guide to Cognitive Neuroscience
• Summaries of key terms and points
Second Edition

Jamie Ward, University of Sussex, UK Praise for the first edition:
“The Student’s Guide to Cognitive Neuroscience is unique in that there are no comparable textbooks aimed at this level, and it does an excellent job of providing a solid grounding in this broad field.” - Charvy Narain, in Nature Neuroscience “Jamie Ward has done a great service to the neuroscience community: he has written an easy to read, enjoyable introduction to cognitive neuroscience that will attract many students to the discipline. The concepts, results and methods of basic neuroscience, clinical neuropsychology, neuroimaging and cognitive pyschology are explained in simple direct language; many examples and illustrations bring the sciences of the mind and brain to life. Perhaps the best feature of the book is the seamless weaving of the various research areas that jointly define cognitive neuroscience into a coherent whole. I will certainly use this book for my courses.” - Alfonso Caramazza, the Cognitive Neuropsychology Laboratory, Harvard University The Student’s Guide to Cognitive Neuroscience, Second Edition is a thoroughly updated edition of the bestselling textbook. Reflecting recent changes in the way cognition and the brain are studied, it provides a comprehensive and student-friendly guide to cognitive neuroscience. Jamie Ward provides an easy-to-follow introduction to neural structure and function, as well as all the key methods and procedures of cognitive neuroscience, with a view to helping students understand how they can be used to shed light on the neural basis of cognition. The book presents an up-to-date overview of the latest theories and findings in all the key topics in cognitive neuroscience, including vision, attention, memory, speech and language, numeracy, executive function and social and emotional behaviour. This edition also contains two completely new chapters on developmental cognitive neuroscience and hearing. Throughout, case studies, newspaper reports and everyday examples are used to help students understand the more challenging ideas that underpin the subject.
Jamie Ward is Editor of the forthcoming journal Cognitive Neuroscience. See page 31 for details

Reflecting contemporary and controversial issues in the study of cognitive neuroscience, the series aims to present a multi-disciplinary forum for cutting edge debate that will help shape this burgeoning discipline. It offers leading figures in the field and the best new researchers an opportunity to showcase their own work, expand on their own theories and place these in the wider context of the field.
Textbook!
Titles in the series may be authored or edited; each book must aim to make a contribution to a specific topic by reviewing and synthesising the existing research literature, by advancing theory in the area, or by some combination of these missions.

“This book represents an exciting new text on human memory. The authors weave basic research from behavioral studies of memory with the latest in neuroscientific thinking. The writing is accessible and should make it a popular text with students and professors alike. I strongly recommend it.” - Henry L. Roediger, III, Washington University, St. Louis “This excellent book meets a long-standing need for an introductory text in human memory and learning. It has been written in an engaging down-to-earth style and the coverage is absolutely up-to-date yet grounded in classic ideas and observations. Recent work on underlying brain mechanisms is also included. I recommend the book enthusiastically to students and to the interested general reader.” - Fergus Craik, Rotman Research Institute and University of Toronto “What distinguishes this delightful and informative book from other textbooks is its eclecticism: It places equal emphasis on data and theory, on typical people and clinical populations, on laboratory experiments and realworld applications, and on methodologies and approaches from experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience. Best of all, the authors have a historical sensibility while being very up-to-date, which gives the reader a good sense of how the field of memory research developed and where it is heading. I recommend the book enthusiastically.” - Morris Moscovitch, Professor of Psychology, University of Toronto and Rotman Research Institute, Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care People seem to be intrigued by memory, and by its sometimes spectacular failure in (for example) people with amnesia. However, students of memory sometimes fail to retain this fascination. The reason is clear: in order to study memory we must carry out carefully-designed experiments, which can seem boring even when they are exciting science. Fortunately, we now know enough about memory to relate laboratory studies to the world beyond. In other words, our scientific knowledge of memory and how it works can help us to explain those aspects of memory that most people find of greatest interest. This book presents a thorough, accessible and appealing overview of the field, written with students in mind, by some of the world’s leading researchers. It starts with a brief overview and explanation of the scientific approach to memory before going on to discuss the basic characteristics of the various memory systems and how
they work. Summaries of short-term and working memory are followed by chapters on learning, the role of organization in memory, the ways in which our knowledge of the world is stored, retrieval, and on intentional and motivated forgetting. The latter half of the book involves the broader application of our basic understanding of memory, with chapters on autobiographical memory, amnesia, and on memory in childhood and aging. After chapters discussing eyewitness testimony and prospective memory, a final chapter addresses an issue of great importance to students – how to improve your memory. Each chapter of the book is written by one of the three authors, an approach which takes full advantage of their individual expertise, style and personality. This enhances students’ enjoyment of the book, allowing them to share the authors’ own fascination with human memory. CONTENTS 1. What is Memory? 2. Short-term Memory. 3. Working Memory. 4. Learning. 5. Episodic Memory: Organizing and Remembering. 6. Semantic Memory and Stored Knowledge. 7. Autobiographical Memory. 8. Retrieval. 9. Incidental Forgetting. 10. Motivated Forgetting. 11. Amnesia. 12. Memory in Childhood. 13. Memory and Aging. Part 14. Eyewitness Testimony. Part 15. Prospective Memory. Part 16. Improving Your Memory.
