Coming soon! Applied Research in Child and Adolescent Development A Practical Guide Valerie Maholmes, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, USA Carmela Gina Lomonaco, Inspire USA Foundation (Eds.) “The content … is exactly … [what] our graduate students need and want. ... The focus, approach, and coverage are very relevant, given the current interest of funding agencies on translational research and the growth of graduate programs in applied developmental science. … The book would be a good resource while students are developing their ideas for their masters theses ... [and] useful for researchers. ... I would … recommend it … in our applied developmental psychology doctoral program. ... It promises to make a significant contribution to the field.” - Linda Baker, University of Maryland Developed for a popular training institute, this volume is organized around the most frequently asked questions from young researchers conducting applied research in child and adolescent development. With contributions from the leading scholars in the field, actual research experiences highlight the challenges one faces in conducting applied research. The techniques, measures, and theoretical frameworks most suitable for guiding the applied research process are reviewed along with ethical and cultural issues that need to be considered. Each chapter features an introduction to the related literature and theories, practical tips called “sidebars”, and a summary. This practical resource provides tips on how to:
• Secure funding to conduct applied research • Disseminate the research results so as to have the greatest impact on policy and practice
• Modify the most frequently used methodological techniques while maintaining the integrity of the data
• Manage the unpredictable nature of real-world research • Frame community relevant research questions in an academically acceptable way
• Develop the necessary attitudes, skills, and knowledge to address public problems of national significance.
Intended as a practical guide, this book is ideal for those just starting their careers in applied research, for students preparing their dissertations, for the faculty who prepare these students, and for researchers. Les B. Whitbeck University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA “A ground-breaking longitudinal study. ... Students would find it fascinating. ... It would be adopted in sociology, social work, and psychology courses at the graduate and undergraduate level. It would also be valuable to researchers, agency workers and policy experts. ... An important part of any scholar’s knowledge on adolescence and emerging adulthood.” - Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, Clark University “The design of the study ... is simply unique. ... I am deeply impressed with the breadth of coverage. ... This title may be used ... at both the (upper) undergraduate and graduate level ... in courses on sociology, social work, and psychology.” - Luc Goossens, Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium What happens to homeless and runaway adolescents when they become adults? This is the first study that follows homeless youth into young adulthood and reviews the mental health consequences of runaway episodes and street life. The adolescents were interviewed every three months for three years from their mid teens to their early twenties. The study documents the psychological consequences associated with becoming adults when missing the critical developmental tasks of adolescence. The authors report high levels of psychological problems associated with victimization prior to and after running away. These victimization experiences shape the behaviors of these young people, affecting their relationships with others and their chances of conventional adjustment. Across time, the more successful their adaptation to street life and the street economy, the more barriers to conventional adult life emerge. The distress, including self-mutilation and suicidal behaviors, among this population is examined, as well as the impact street life has on future relationships, education, and employment. Nutritional and health problems are also explored, along with the social and economic impact of this population on society. As such, the book provides insight about why the current prevention and treatment programs are failing in an effort to help policy makers modify approaches to adolescent runaways. Intended as a supplementary text for undergraduate and/ or graduate courses on homelessness, high risk youth, social deviance, adolescence and/or emerging adulthood taught in departments of psychology, human development, sociology, social work, and public health, this compelling new book will also appeal to anyone who works with homeless adolescents. the Ontogenesis of Individual Competencies (LOGIC) examined the development of individual differences over time and whether it is possible to predict later competencies from earlier ones. Offering a snapshot of theory and data on personality, social, motor, moral, and cognitive development, the contributors help us understand which individual differences can and cannot be altered through schooling and other experiences and how differences seen in the earliest stages are later reflected in adulthood. The results provide valuable insight into the strengths and limitations of early prediction of individual differences.
New! Handbook of Cultural Developmental Science Marc H. Bornstein (Ed.) National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Bethesda, Maryland, USA “This landmark publication singularly crystallizes and advances understanding of the nature and importance of the cultural bases of human development. The Handbook will provide the theoretical and empirical foundation for scientific progress for decades to come.” - Richard M. Lerner, Bergstrom Chair in Applied Developmental Science, Tufts University
This is the second volume to review the wealth of data generated by the study. The first volume (Weinert & Schneider, 1999) traced development from ages 3 to 12. This volume continues the story, integrating these early findings with the results from adolescence and young adulthood. Each of the chapters provides an overview of current research and addresses how the data help us understand the presence and developmental effects of individual differences. Among the findings are results on: • The relative stability of cognitive competencies • The long-term effects of shyness and aggression • The relation between moral understanding and action • The role of education in the development or maintenance of performance differences. Intended for researchers and advanced students in developmental, educational, personality, social, and cognitive psychology, this book will also appeal to educators, especially the chapters that focus on literacy development, educational context, scientific reasoning and mathematical reasoning. “Moving far beyond the usual restricted range of who is studied by whom, Bornstein elegantly brings together leading scholars from around the world to examine the varieties of ways in which culture prescribes and proscribes childhood experiences.” - Carola Suárez-Orozco, New York University Researchers and theoreticians commonly acknowledge the profound impact of culture on all aspects of development. However, many in the field are often unaware of the latest cultural literatures or how development proceeds in places other than their home locations. This comprehensive handbook covers all domains of developmental science from a cultural point of view and in all regions of the globe. The Handbook documents child and caregiver characteristics associated with cultural variation, and it charts relations between cultural and developmental variations in physical, mental, emotional, and social development in children, parents, and cultural groups. This contemporary and scholarly resource of culture in development covers theoretical, methodological, substantive, and ethnic issues as well as geographic approaches. Each chapter includes an introduction, historical and demographic considerations, theory, an overview of the most important classical and modern research studies, recommended future directions in theory and research, and a conclusion. The chapters focus on children from the prenatal stage through adolescence. Interdisciplinary in nature, the Handbook will appeal to human development theoreticians, researchers, and students in psychology, education, and pediatrics. Ideal for those new to the field, readers will appreciate the plethora of cultural examples from all fields of child and human development and developmental examples from all fields of cultural study. Handbook of Adolescent Development Sandy Jackson, formerly University of Groningen, The Netherlands Luc Goossens, University of Leuven, Belgium (Eds.) “I think it is excellent – really really good. One of the best things I have read on theories of adolescence.” - John Coleman, Trust for the Study of Adolescence The Handbook of Adolescent Development fills a gap in the literature on adolescent development and behaviour: all of the authors of the various chapters were been invited to include as many findings on European adolescents as possible. Through this specific emphasis, the handbook provides a complement to other reviews of the literature that are mostly based on North American samples.
Coming soon! Children of Divorce Stories of Loss and Growth 2nd Edition John H. Harvey, University of Iowa, USA Mark A. Fine, University of Missouri/Columbia, USA “I appreciate the “translation” of the research into a narrative that students ... can understand. ... The inclusion of “comments” following each narrative helps to solidify the concepts portrayed and helps to connect content across chapters. ... The book’s structure ... is a good pedagogical tool for undergraduates to better understand how research/data are embedded in a literature. ... The focus on college students’ narratives is unique ... my students can easily relate to them. Relevant and important literature is included and guides the understanding of the stories.” - Karen Blaisure, Western Michigan University, USA This volume paints a picture of the pain, the hope, and the resiliency shown by young adults while in the throes of divorce and in the years to follow. Featuring excerpts of stories collected from thousands of young people, this book demonstrates the value of storytelling in helping people deal with major loss in their lives. These poignant narratives are framed by an analysis of the most recent divorce literature. By examining these vivid and realistic experiences, readers gain a greater understanding of the effects of divorce and help to strengthen relationships in the future. This book also challenges the contention that most children will be irretrievably hurt by their parents’ divorce by presenting stories that show the strength and resilience many young people have learned in surviving the pain surrounding divorce. Emphasis is placed on how hope about the possibilities of having close relationships and the willingness to try to have stronger families in their own adult lives motivate this sample of young people. The Education-Drug Use Connection How Successes and Failures in School Relate to Adolescent Smoking, Drinking, Drug Use, and Delinquency Jerald G. Bachman, Patrick M. O’Malley, John E. Schulenberg, Lloyd D. Johnston, Peter Freedman-Doan, Emily E. Messersmith, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA “This book is a major step forward in the understanding of the predictors of educational success, substance use, and delinquency. The availability of nationally representative panel data for an eight-year period allows the authors to conduct predictive analyses heretofore impossible.” - Liz Sale, in PsycCritiques This book tackles a key issue in adolescent development and health – the educationdrug use connection. The authors examine the links and likely causal connections between educational experiences, delinquent behavior, and adolescent use of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine. The book uses data from the University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future project. It focuses on a large and nationally representative sample of 8th grade students in the United States who were initially surveyed in 1991–1993 and then followed over the vitally important developmental period between ages 14 and 22. The volume uses a variety of statistical analysis techniques, and the findings can be understood by individuals with limited, as well as with extensive, backgrounds in research design. The book provides a summary of the findings and conclusions; a review of relevant literature; a detailed discussion of the survey and analysis methods; the academic attainment of those in the longitudinal panel; the delinquent behaviors of panel members as they relate to measures of educational success; and the patterns of initiation, continuation, and cessation for each substance: cigarettes, marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol. This book is intended for anyone who deals with education and/ or substance use, including educational, developmental, and social psychologists; sociologists; epidemiologists; educators; and policy makers. Key Indicators of Child and Youth Well-Being Completing the Picture Brett V. Brown (Ed.) Child Trends, Washington, DC, USA “A much-needed avenue to (a) promote a cohesive system of how we track indicators and the supporting research, (b) improve the quality of child and youth indicators, and (c) expand the cultural sensitivity and validity of indicators.” - Veda E. Brown, in PsycCritiques Indicators of child and youth well-being are indispensable tools for improving the lives of children. In this book, the nation’s leading development researchers review the recent progress made in the measurement, collection, dissemination, and use of indicators of child and youth wellbeing. In addition, they identify opportunities for future research to expand and improve on the indicator data available, so as to develop greater measures of positive development. Written in an accessible manner for policy makers, practitioners, and researchers concerned with children’s well-being, including experts in developmental, social, community, and educational psychology, the book also serves as a supplementary text in public policy and the social sciences. The policy chapters will be of particular interest to those who use child and youth indicators to guide policy development. Risk and Resilience Adolescent Mothers and Their Children Grow Up John G. Borkowski, Jaelyn R. Farris, Thomas L. Whitman, University of Notre Dame, USA; Shannon S. Carothers, Georgetown University, USA; Keri Weed, University of South Carolina at Aiken, USA; Deborah A. Keogh, University of Notre Dame, USA (Eds.) “This book would be an excellent addition to any undergraduate class on developmental psychology and would be especially welcome in graduate-level classes in psychology, sociology, and public policy.” - F. Richard Ferraro, PsycCRITIQUES In 1984, a longitudinal study was launched at the University of Notre Dame to evaluate the social and psychological consequences of teenage parenting. Interwoven Lives: Adolescent Mothers and Their Children (2001) described, in detail, the development of these adolescent mothers and their children across the first eight years of life. With these data as the backdrop, this companion volume, Risk and Resilience, identifies major risk factors associated with long-term developmental delays as well as the processes that led to resilience in some of the mothers and children. This volume traces the children’s development at ages 8, 10, and 14. The editors focus on identifying risk and protective factors associated with important life course trajectories as the mothers entered early adulthood and their children became adolescents. The text addresses: • New methodological approaches with an emphasis on the use of hierarchical linear and structural equation modeling and dynamical systems analyses • Implications for prevention and intervention programs • Intellectual, educational, and socioemotional outcome data • The “dark side” of rearing children in poverty • The multiple risks related to adolescent parenting and their profound impact on children’s development

Smooth Sailing or Stormy Waters? Family Transitions Through Adolescence and Their Implications for Practice and Policy Rena D. Harold, Michigan State University, USA; Lisa G. Colarossi, Fordham University, USA; Lucy R. Mercier, Saginaw Valley State University, USA Smooth Sailing enhances our understanding of the family’s transition through adolescence by examining qualitative data about the experiences of parents and teens across multiple relationships and social contexts. This volume follows the same 60 families described in the authors’ first book, Becoming a Family (2000), relating their stories about their transition from childhood to adolescence. The Adolescence and Society Series Series Editor: John C. Coleman, Founder of Young People in Focus (formerly the Trust for the Study of Adolescence), UK and Consulting Editor of the Journal of Adolescence In the twenty years since it began, the Adolescence and Society series has published short, readable books on topics of current interest to do with youth and society. The books summarise and review current work in the field of adolescent development. The readership rests primarily in two major areas: the undergraduate market, particularly in the fields of psychology, sociology and education; and the professional training market, with particular emphasis on social work, clinical and educational psychology, counselling, youth work, nursing and teacher training. www.psypress.com/adolescence-and-society
Coming soon! Illegal Leisure Revisited Changing Patterns of Alcohol and Drug Use in Adolescents and Young Adults Judith Aldridge, University of Manchester, UK; Fiona Measham, Lancaster University, UK; Howard Parker, University of Manchester, UK; Lisa Williams, University of Manchester, UK
Adolescence and Society Series Illegal Leisure Revisited updates the progress into adulthood of the cohort of 14-year-olds who were recruited and tracked until they were 18 years old for Illegal Leisure (1998). Illegal Leisure described their adolescent journeys and lifestyles, focusing on their early regular drinking and extensive ‘recreational’ drug use. These ‘children of the nineties’ took unprecedented levels of amphetamines, LSD, ecstasy, and particularly cannabis. Via qualitative interviews and self-report surveys, Illegal Leisure Revisited recalls the group at 22 and 27 years of age, and describes the relationship between their transitions to adulthood and the changing role and use of various legal and illegal drugs, including alcohol and cocaine. The research shows twentysomethings learning how to navigate between work and play and negotiate their rights and responsibilities with partners as much as parents. It presents to the reader the ways in which these young people have moved into the world of work, long-term relationships and parenthood, illustrating the changes in the function and frequency of their drinking and drug-use patterns. Illegal Leisure Revisited places these journeys amongst the everchanging backdrop of a consumption-oriented leisure society, the rapid expansion of the British night-time economy and the place of substance use in contemporary social worlds. With dire public
health warnings about their favourite intoxicants and with the growing criminalisation of a widening array of drugs used for recreational purposes, our cohort continue as archetypal citizens in a risk society. This book is ideal reading for international academic researchers, and undergraduate students from a variety of fields such as developmental and social psychology, sociology, criminology, cultural and health studies. Professionals working in criminal justice, health promotion, drugs education, harm reduction and treatment will also find this book an invaluable resource. Coming soon! Family Life in Adolescence Patricia Noller, Emeritus Professor of Psychology, University of Queensland, Australia Sharon Atkin, Psychologist in private practice
Adolescence and Society Series Stereotypes of adolescents in Western culture can be very negative, yet a small group tends to give them all a bad name. This book, based on the extensive research Family Life conducted over the last 20 years, describes in Adolescence how the family environment is the key to whether adolescents thrive or get involved in problem behaviours. The authors examine which aspects of family life provide the best environment for the growth and development of young people. Topics covered include the development of individual identity and the importance of communication in the family, looking at how this affects the ways in which adolescents learn about dealing with conflict, solving problems and making decisions. A further focus is on the importance of a warm and accepting family environment, which also requires responsible behaviour from young people. The book also deals with the problems that are faced by adolescents whose parents divorce or those who live in stepfamilies, and explores the antecedents and consequences of adolescent problem behaviours such as binge-drinking, drug-taking, smoking and premature sexual activity, and mental health issues such as depression, suicide and eating disorders. Finally, the authors focus on current patterns of leaving home and deal with issues such as running away and youth homelessness. This book will be of help to parents and to any who work with adolescents such as teachers, social workers, youth leaders, clergy, psychologists and psychiatrists. Readers should gain a greater understanding of the kinds of family environments that produce the most productive and well-adjusted young people who can make a worthwhile contribution to the society in which they live. New! Wired Youth The Social World of Adolescence in the Information Age Gustavo Mesch & Ilan Talmud The University of Haifa, Israel
Adolescence and Society Series The debate on the social impact of information and communication technologies is particularly important for the study of adolescent life, because in their close association with friends and peers, adolescents develop life expectations, school aspirations, world views, and behaviors. Wired Youth investigates the driving forces of social interaction, such as shared interests and adolescents’ need of diversification of their social circle, and shows how online activities are closely associated with offline social behavior. This book presents an up-to-date review of the literature on youth sociability, relationship formation, and online communication, examining the way young people use the internet to construct or maintain their interpersonal relationships. Using a social network perspective, the book systematically explores the various effects of internet access and use on adolescents’ involvement in social, leisure and extracurricular activities, evaluating the arguments that suggest the internet is displacing other forms of social ties. The core of the book investigates the motivations for online relationship formation and the use of online communication for relationship maintenance. The final part of the book focuses on the consequences, both positive and negative, of the use of online communication, such as increased social capital and online bullying. Wired Youth is suitable for undergraduate and graduate students of adolescent psychology, youth studies, media studies and the psychology and sociology of interpersonal relationships. Contents 1. The Information Age, Youth and Social Networks. 2. The Internet at Home. 3. Sociability and Internet Use. 4. Online Relationship Formation. 5. ICT and Existing Ties. 6. Adolescence and Society Series “This is the best book that has yet been written on homeless youth. Through following young people over time, the authors identify four pathways of homelessness with different origins and outcomes. They bring these homeless youth alive by presenting them in their own voices, using abundant interview material. The book will be highly valuable to anyone who seeks to understand or ameliorate the problems of homeless youth.” - Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, Clark University “This research project is timely and useful. Homelessness amongst young people is a significant problem and this book provides a positive focus on the structural causes, giving a voice to the young people who are experiencing homelessness. It is a helpful tool for study and also will provide constructive information for lobbying on homelessness issues.” - Narelle Clay, CEO of Southern Youth and Family Services, Australia Based on rich interview data drawn from a large-scale longitudinal study of homeless young people, this book examines the personal, familial and structural factors that impact on homeless young people’s long-term outcomes. While telling the personal stories of young people’s experiences, the book refers to the wider research and policy literature on youth homelessness, engaging with key debates about the causes and meanings of homelessness in western societies. The book addresses important issues such as employment and education, engagement with services, social support, connection to family and friends, as well as personal factors including physical and mental health, sexual practices and drug use. Homeless young people are typically portrayed as leading chaotic, risky lives, trapped in a downward spiral of drug use, mental and other health problems, and long-term homelessness. By giving voice to young homeless people, this book challenges this stereotype and demonstrates young people’s capacity to move out of homelessness and make satisfactory lives for themselves. Research findings are positioned in the context of a broad, international literature on youth homelessness. This is important reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of psychology, sociology, youth and social work, as well as researchers, policy makers and service providers in all western cultures. Adolescent Coping Advances in Theory, Research and Practice 2nd Edition Erica Frydenberg University of Melbourne, Australia
Adolescence and Society Series “The book is a rich resource of theory, research and practical common sense. Examination of adolescence through a focus on coping enables topics of real interest and importance to be considered, so what we have in this book is, essentially, a new and creative way to look at adolescence. This is a scholarly work of significance, and the author is to be congratulated on the depth and breadth of her research and scholarship.” - Susan Moore, Professor of Psychology, Swinburne University of Technology “Dr. Frydenberg has written a comprehensive book that will enable mental health professionals to create assessment-tointerventions links for youth to learn and practice coping. The comprehensiveness, integrative nature, and scientific base of this book are impressive, distinctive features.” - Sandra L. Christenson, Department of Educational Psychology, University of Minnesota Young people need to cope in a variety of settings, including school, home, peer groups and the workplace, and with a range of life problems such as examinations and parental divorce. This thoroughly revised and updated second edition of Adolescent Coping presents the latest research and applications in the field of coping. It highlights the ways in which coping can be measured and, in particular, details a widely used adolescent coping instrument. Each topic is considered in light of past and recent research findings and each chapter includes quotations from young people. While topics such as depression, eating disorders, selfharm and grief and loss are addressed, there is a substantial focus on the positive aspects of coping, including an emphasis on resilience and the achievement of happiness. In addition to the wide-ranging research findings that are reported, many of the chapters consider implications and applications of the relevant
findings with suggestions for the development of coping skills and coping skills training. Social Networks in Youth and Adolescence 2nd Edition John Cotterell (Retired) School of Education, University of Queensland, Australia
Adolescence and Society Series “John Cotterell is the principle pioneer of an approach that I am sure is going to prove extraordinarily important for the field. Along the way, he provides a genuinely useful and wide-ranging review of adolescent social relations and their significance. I will certainly want this book on my shelves and I have no doubt but that this wish will be shared by every researcher/teacher in this area.” Nicholas Emler, University of Surrey “The book offers a broad perspective on adolescents’ peer relations in contexts, which gives the reader a fascinating overview of the complexity and importance of network analyses and the implications for designing developmental contexts (e.g., the school). The book offers a view on adolescents’ strengths that can help to facilitate positive outcomes for as many adolescents as possible.” - Rainer K. Silbereisen, University of Jena This thoroughly revised second edition looks at the nature of social networks, their changing configurations, and the forces of influence they unleash in shaping the life experiences of young people between the ages of 12 and 25 years. The author draws on both social and psychological research to apply network thinking to the social relations of youth across the domains of school, work and society. Network thinking examines the pattern and nature of social ties, and analyses

Sexuality in Adolescence Current Trends 2nd Edition Susan M. Moore, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia Doreen A. Rosenthal, University of Melbourne, Australia
Adolescence and Society Series “There is a great need for this book as there is little else that is up-to-date in the area of Adolescent Sexuality. The writing is coherent, easy to follow, and well crafted, and the range of topics covered is excellent.” - Shirley Feldman, Director for the curriculum on Children and Society, Stanford University. Sexuality in Adolescence considers the latest theory and research on adolescent development, focusing on sexuality as a vital aspect of normal, healthy maturation. Biological changes are discussed within a social context, and the latest research is presented on key issues of our time, including changes in teenage sexual behaviours and beliefs, sexual risk-taking, body dissatisfaction, sex education, teen pregnancy and abortion. Susan Moore and Doreen Rosenthal explore the roles of parents, peers, the media, social institutions and youth culture in adolescent sexual adjustment. This volume covers topical issues ranging from the role of the internet in adolescent romance to the pros and cons of abstinence education versus harm minimization. Issues such as whether there are male-female differences in desire, sexuality, motives for sex, and beliefs about romance are examined, along with the question of whether a sexual double standard still exists. Maladaptive aspects of sexual development, including sexual risk-taking, disease, unplanned pregnancy, and sexual coercion are also covered.

Identity in Adolescence The Balance Between Self and Other 3rd Edition Jane Kroger University of Tromsø, Norway
Adolescence and Society Series “Jane Kroger has written a clear and timely book which brings difficult but crucially important concepts back in to the arena of mainstream psychology in a very readable form. ... A valuable source of knowledge about current theories and research findings.” - New Zealand Journal of Educational Studies Identity in Adolescence examines the two-way interaction of individual and social context in the process of identity formation. Setting the developmental tradition in context, Jane Kroger begins by providing a brief overview of the theoretical approaches to adolescent identity formation currently in use. This is followed by a discussion of five developmental models which reflect a range of attempts from the oldest to among the most recent efforts to describe this process, and include the work of Erik Erikson, Peter Blos, Lawrence Kohlberg, Jane Loevinger, and Robert Kegan. Although focussing on each theorist in turn, this volume also goes on to compare and integrate the varied theoretical models and research findings and sets out some of the practical implications for social response to adolescents. “The authors expertly lead readers through an understanding of their social relational model and methodology to family study with a variety of tables and databases. ... This book will be extremely useful to researchers seeking greater understanding of family transitions and relationships. Don’t be fooled by [its] brevity. … Each page and chapter is highly condensed, with clear methodological analysis of the transitions to adulthood.” - Robert Butziger, in PsycCRITIQUES

Studies in Adolescent Development Series This book considers the role of deception during adolescence, and explores the factors which underpin adolescents’ choice to deceive, whether these deceptions will be successful, and the ways in which such lies could be detected. While deception is argued to be antisocial or even pathological in some circumstances, the central argument of this book is that lying can be a skilled behaviour which is necessary to allow adolescents to establish autonomy. The book builds on a recent influential model of human development, exploring how the developmental challenge model (Hendry & Kloep, 2002, 2009) can provide a useful explanatory framework for the development of the skill of deception in adolescence. Interpersonal and forensic settings for deceptive behaviour are referred to, and illustrated with reference to both published research and new data obtained from a variety of different interviews and focus groups with young people. The book also considers how the choice to communicate truthfully is as important as illuminating the developmental process. It concludes with a discussion of how adolescents’ deceptions could be detected and presents a range of strategies to maximize the effectiveness of interpersonal interactions with suspected deceivers. By considering everyday, forensic, and clinical deception situations, this book is ideal for academic researchers, practitioners working with children and young people, as well as parents. The observations, interviews, and focus groups provide a unique insight into the factors influencing young people’s communication choices, and integrate research from developmental, social, and forensic psychology. This book explores the development of a new path of transition between adolescence and adulthood in recent generations. Whereas traditionally the transition into adulthood was marked by a clear and irreversible change in condition, we are now seeing a continuance in the role and influence of the family on the young adult. What consequences does this have for our society? Is the persistence of emotional bonds which previously loosened during adolescence, inhibiting young people from developing into full adulthood? The authors present a clear and in-depth analysis of the theoretical framework surrounding the transition into adulthood both from a generational point of view and a relationship-centred perspective. The findings of international research are presented and compared across generations, gender and geographical location within Europe. The different research methods of ‘family related research’ and ‘family research’ are also distinguished and analysed. This volume offers an original and multi-faceted review of this topic. The family is considered as an organization, and the interdependencies and interconnections between its members, the generations, and genders investigated. It offers a unique contribution to the current literature and will appeal to an international audience of researchers, policy makers and educators both in academic and professional spheres. This international refereed journal is concerned both with the practice of sex education and with the thinking that underpins it. Contributions are welcomed from within a variety of academic disciplines - particularly health education, sociology, philosophy and psychology. Sex Education does not assume that sex education takes place only in educational institutions and the family. Contributions are therefore welcomed which, for example, analyse the impacts of media and other vehicles of culture on sexual behaviour and attitudes. Medical and epidemiological papers not be accepted unless their educational implications are discussed adequately.
