Essays in Developmental Psychology Series www.psypress.com/essays/developmental Series Editors: North America: Henry Wellman, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and Janet Werker, University of British Columbia; UK: Claire Hughes, Centre for Family Research, University of Cambridge and Usha Goswami, University of Cambridge Designed to meet the need for rapid publication of brief volumes in developmental psychology, the series defines developmental psychology in its broadest terms. Each volume in the series makes a conceptual contribution to the topic by reviewing and synthesizing the existing research literature, by advancing theory in the area, or by some combination of these missions. Authors in this series provide an overview of their own highly successful research program, but they also include an assessment of current knowledge and identification of possible future trends in research. Each book is a self-contained unit supplying the advanced reader with a coherent review of important research as well as its context, theoretical grounding and implications.

Developmental Science An Advanced Textbook
6th Edition Marc H. Bornstein, Eunice Shriver Kennedy National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, USA Michael E. Lamb, Cambridge University, UK (Eds.) “I find the content spectacular. The range of topics and the explanation of the science of development are superb. … I would like to develop an advanced undergraduate or graduate seminar on the science of developmental psychology. I would use the book for that.” - Rebecca Wood, Central Connecticut State University, USA “This is an excellent reference book that no developmental graduate student or … researcher should be without.” - Annie M. Cardell, Mountain State University, USA Noted as one of the most comprehensive textbooks in the field, Developmental Science, 6th Edition introduces readers to all areas of developmental psychology – neuroscience, genetics, perception, cognition, language, emotion, self, and social interaction. Each of the world-renowned contributors masterfully introduces the history and systems, methodologies, and measurement and analytic techniques used to understand the area of human development under review. The relevance of the field is illustrated through engaging applications in each chapter. As a whole, this highlyrespected text illuminates substantive phenomena in developmental science, its applications across the life span, and its relevance to everyday life. Each chapter in the 6th edition has been substantially revised to reflect the current state of the field, and a new chapter has been added. The enhanced pedagogical program now features chapter introductions, overviews of the field, bold-faced key terms, chapter summaries, numerous references and suggested readings, and a glossary. A new website features PowerPoints, Discussion Questions, and Classroom Activities for Instructors, and Chapter Study Tips, Key Terms, and related hotlinks for students. The book opens with an overview of developmental science – its history and theory, the cultural orientation to thinking about human development, and the manner in which empirical research is designed, conducted, and analyzed. Part 2 focuses on the field’s major substantive areas – neuroscience and genetics, physical and motor development, perception, and cognitive and language development. Part 3 examines personality and social development within the context of the various relationships and situations in which developing individuals function and by which they are shaped. The book concludes with a new chapter on
the latest applications of developmental science. Ways in which developmental thinking and research affect and are affected by practice and social policy are particularly emphasized. Used primarily as a graduate-level text for courses on developmental psychology/science, life span, and/or human development, the book can also be used at the advanced undergraduate level. Researchers interested in staying abreast of the latest developments in the field also appreciate the book’s comprehensive nature. Contents Part 1. Foundations of Developmental Science. R.M. “Given the increasing encouragement towards applied, translational science, a book of this type that could serve both a graduate community and basic researchers … would be welcome. ... I can see this text being used in several research design or substantive research courses. … A strength of this book is the solid treatment of how and why particular research techniques and methods may (or must) be modified in applied settings.” - Scott M. Hofer, University of Victoria, Canada Developed for an NIH training institute, this volume is organized around the most frequently asked questions by researchers starting their careers in applied research in child and adolescent development. With contributions from the leading scholars in the field, actual research experiences highlight the challenges one faces in conducting such research. The techniques and theoretical frameworks most suitable for guiding the applied research process are reviewed along with related ethical and cultural considerations. Each chapter features the authors’ introduction to their own careers in applied research. Also included are practical tips, case studies, and sidebars featuring frequently asked questions. This practical resource provides tips on how to: • Modify the most frequently used methodological techniques while maintaining the integrity of the data • Manage the unpredictable nature of real-world research • Frame community-relevant research questions in an academically acceptable way • Secure funding to conduct applied research • Disseminate the research results so as to have the greatest impact on policy and practice. The book opens with the most frequently asked questions, tips on getting started in an applied research career, and an overview of and a theoretical framework for generating applied developmental research ideas. Section 2 focuses on research designs, including the most frequently used methodological and measurement techniques and tips on how to modify these techniques in applied settings. Ethical challenges and cultural issues in working with special populations are also addressed. Section 3 focuses on conducting applied research in school, community, and clinical settings with an emphasis on the challenges encountered when conducting actual research as opposed to the more controlled settings taught in the classroom. Guidelines for protecting the populations involved in the study and strategies for recruiting and retaining participants are also addressed. The book concludes with strategies for disseminating research findings so as to have the greatest impact on policy and practice, for publishing research, and for securing funding. Intended as a practical guide, this book is ideal for those just starting their careers in applied research, for students preparing their dissertations, and for the faculty who prepare these students. The book’s accessible approach also appeals to researchers in the behavioral, social, and health sciences, education, and those in government and industry. Contents V. Maholmes, C. Psychotherapy as a Developmental Process Michael Basseches, Suffolk University, USA Michael F. Mascolo, Merrimack College, USA For all those engaged in psychotherapy practice, regardless of modality or approach, the goal of this book is to provide a framework and method for thinking about their work that allows for critical reflection on their own successes and disappointments, and on the similarities and differences among their own and other practitioners’ work with different clients. The authors use a novel “common factors” approach, based on the idea that some form of development is the outcome of all effective psychotherapy, despite other differences that may exist.
to appreciate the highly varied ways in which particular therapists tailor their work to unique clients’ developmental needs, while at the same time offering a prescription of a more rigorous method for recognizing and correcting the problem when a particular therapist’s way of working is not serving the client well. Ideally, this type of process-focused research will complement existing outcome research, and be more likely than further symptomreduction studies to result in the improvement of overall psychotherapy success rates. While most existing psychotherapy research focuses on treatment outcomes, primarily in terms of symptom reduction, this book offers an alternative research approach that systematically tracks the psychotherapy process itself, and describes each case’s unique developmental outcome. In particular, Basseches and Mascolo focus on the questions of what kinds of therapeutic resources therapists are offering to their clients and whether and how clients are able to make use of these resources in the service of their own development. The goal is to provide a descriptive framework that can be used

A Dialogue between Neo-Piagetian and Cognitive Approaches Pierre Barrouillet, Université de Genève, Switzerland Vinciane Gaillard, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium (Eds.) The intellectual development of human beings from birth to adulthood is a fascinating phenomenon. Understanding the constraints that limit children’s intelligence, as well as discovering methods to improve it, has always been a challenging undertaking for developmental psychologists. This book presents a unique attempt to address these issues by establishing a dialogue between neoPiagetian theorists and researchers specialized in typical and atypical working memory development. The book integrates recent advances in studies of working memory development with theories proposed by the most prominent neoPiagetian researchers who have emphasized the role of cognitive resources and working memory capacity in the development of thinking and reasoning. In the opening section, the main proponents of this tradition develop their theories of cognitive development in terms of available mental attention, processing efficiency and speed, inhibition and relational complexity. The second part of the book addresses the mechanisms that underpin the increase in working memory capacity and the respective roles of processing efficiency, storage capacity, and the use of reactivation processes of memory traces such as rehearsal. Finally, the central role played by working memory in atypical development and learning difficulties is examined. This book provides psychologists, students and researchers who are interested in child development with an integrated and up-todate series of chapters written by prominent specialists in the areas of working memory, attention, and cognitive development. Art and Human Development Constance Milbrath, University of British Columbia, Canada Cynthia Lightfoot, Pennsylvania State University, USA (Eds.) Jean Piaget Symposia Series “This book goes beyond describing and explaining how individuals develop normative knowledge about the world as it is. It offers intriguing accounts of how individuals are able to use the visual arts, theatre, literature, and music to represent the world as it could be.” - Lynn S. Liben, Pennsylvania State University, USA “Milbrath and Lightfoot present us with an engrossing and wide-ranging series of … articles related to the arts. This book will be of great value to school-based educators and cognitive researchers who wish to engage with current issues at the intersection of the arts, cognition and social development.” David Pariser, Professor of Art Education, Faculty of Fine Arts, Concordia University, Canada This interdisciplinary volume explores art, its development, and its role in the construction of knowledge. Presenting theory and research on artistic development as a cultural and creative endeavor, contributors examine the origins of human art during the Paleolithic cultural revolution, as part of a modern cultural transformation, in the growth of a creative artist, and in developing children. Target chapters expressing the disciplinary perspectives of psychology, archaeology, communications, education, and the performing arts are followed by commentaries from internationally acclaimed scholars of human development. Part 1 explores how cultures harness and exploit the arts to give expression to values, social practices, and traditions. This section traces the emergence of new art forms that arose during social unrest, including the symbolization of spiritual beliefs expressed on the walls of Paleolithic caves, and the racial identity and cultural values expressed in the media of the hip-hop generation. Part 2 examines the journeys of a composer and a group of students to highlight the process of becoming an artist and the role education plays in its development. The book concludes with a focus on the development of aesthetic appreciation and artistic activity in childhood and adolescence, including, for example, how a child’s developing theory of mind affects appreciation for the arts, and how developing empathy and emotional regulation contribute to the cognitive and affective underpinnings of acting in adolescence. As a whole contributors explore the developmental, sociocultural, and evolutionary processes that make the creation and experience of art possible.

Mindreaders The Cognitive Basis of “Theory of Mind” Ian Apperly University of Birmingham, UK Theory of mind, or “mindreading” as it is termed in this book, is the ability to think about beliefs, desires, knowledge and intentions. It has been studied extensively by developmental and comparative psychologists and more recently by neuroscientists and cognitive psychologists. This book is the first to draw together these diverse findings in an account of the cognitive basis of “theory of mind”, and establishes the systematic study of mindreading in adults as a new field of enquiry. Apperly focuses on perceptions, knowledge and beliefs as paradigm cases of mindreading, and uses this as a basis from which more general lessons can be drawn. The book argues that an account of the cognitive basis of mindreading is necessary for making sense of findings from neuroscience and developmental and comparative psychology, as well as for understanding how mindreading fits more broadly into the cognitive system. It questions standard philosophical accounts of mindreading, and suggests a move away from the notion that it consists simply of having a “theory of mind”. This unique study into the cognitive basis of mindreading will be ideal reading for academics and advanced students from the diverse disciplines that have studied theory of mind in particular, and social cognition more generally. Theory of Mind: Specialized Capacity or Emergent Property? Perspectives from Non-human and Human Development Elisabeth Sterck, Utrecht University, The Netherlands; Sander Begeer, VU University, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Juliane Cuperus, Sint Marie Diagnostic and Treatment Centre for Children with Communication Disorders, Eindhoven, The Netherlands; Richard van Wezel, Utrecht University, The Netherlands (Eds.) Theory of Mind, the cognitive capacity to attribute emotions, intentions and knowledge to oneself and others, has been claimed a hallmark of human cognition. Nonetheless, Theory of Mind is considered limited in young children and people with autism. Moreover, its presence in animals is much investigated, and hotly debated. Essential for cross-disciplinary discussions and real insight in this unique capacity is knowing what constitutes Theory of Mind. This volume aims to tackle this by combining insights from three different scientific fields that study Theory of Mind: animal behaviour, typical child development and developmental disorders such as autism and AD/HD. Language & Reading Development Reading and Dyslexia in Different Orthographies Nicola Brunswick, Middlesex University, UK; Siné McDougall, Bournemouth University, UK; Paul de Mornay Davies, Middlesex University, UK (Eds.) “This book contains much of interest to the student of reading, and brings together considerable expertise on cross-linguistic differences in a single volume. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in obtaining a better understanding of how orthographies differ across languages and the implications for learning to read.” Colin J. Davis, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK “Much of the research on learning to read and spell has examined a single language: English. This collection brings together research on a range of languages, looking at typical children and adults and also at people with reading problems. Together, the chapters contribute to a better understanding of reading and its development.” - Rebecca Treiman, Washington University in St. Louis, USA This book provides a unique and accessible account of current research on reading and dyslexia in different orthographies. While most research has been conducted in English, this text presents cross-language comparisons to provide insights into universal aspects of reading development and developmental dyslexia in alphabetic and non-alphabetic languages. Bringing together contributions from a group of leading literacy researchers from around the world, the book begins by examining the development of language skills in monolingual speakers of alphabetic and non-alphabetic languages; it then explores literacy acquisition in bilingual children learning to read in languages with different spelling–sound rules, including English, French, Greek, Welsh and Japanese. The second section is devoted to developmental dyslexia in speakers of different languages and examines the impact of variations in orthography on the symptoms and aetiology of dyslexia. The final section explores the contribution of brain imaging to the study of impaired and unimpaired reading, giving an up-to-the-minute picture of how the brain deals with different languages and writing systems. This is ideal reading for advanced undergraduates and postgraduates who have an interest in language acquisition, reading and spelling, as well as speech and language therapists, teachers and special educational needs professionals Contents U. The Child as Social Person Sara Meadows University of Bristol, UK “This book offers the most complete update of Bronfenbrenner’s model of person–environment interaction that I have seen, making it an all the more important contribution to the field.” - Harry Daniels, University of Bath, UK “Both students new to this area and established researchers will benefit from this integrative text, which clearly captures the complexity of factors which influence children’s social development. The crossreferencing of topics within and between areas is excellent, clearly demonstrating the importance of considering the multitude of factors playing a role in individual differences. A must read!” Dawn Watling, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK Questions about how children grow up in their social worlds are of enormous significance for parents, teachers, and society at large, as well as for children themselves. Clearly children are shaped by the social world that surrounds them but they also shape the social worlds that they, and those significant to them, encounter. Exactly how does this happen, and what can we do to ensure that it produces happy outcomes? This book provides a critical review of the psychological literature on the development of personality, social cognition, social skills, social relations and social outcomes from birth to early adulthood. It uses Bronfenbrenner’s model of the development of the person and up-to-date evidence to analyse normal and abnormal social development, prosocial and antisocial behaviour, within and across cultures. As well as outlining the theory, the book addresses applied issues such as delinquency, school failure, and social exclusion. Using a coherent theoretical structure, The Child as Social Person examines material from across the biological and social sciences to present an integrated account of what we do and do not know about the development of the child as a social actor. It will be essential reading for advanced undergraduate students in psychology, education and social work, as well as postgraduates and researchers in these disciplines.

Nurturing Natures Attachment and Children’s Emotional, Sociocultural and Brain Development Graham Music Tavistock Clinic, London, UK “This book demonstrates an extraordinarily wide range of knowledge about different aspects of child and adolescent development. The author takes a refreshingly non-partisan approach to the nature vs nurture debate, describing the latest research on genetics and neuroscience alongside compelling evidence for the impact of culture, class and parenting on the emotional development of the child.” - Nick Midgley, Head of Programme for Children and Young People, Anna Freud Centre, London, UK This book provides an indispensable account of current understandings of children’s emotional development. Integrating the latest research findings from areas such as attachment theory, neuroscience and developmental psychology, it weaves these into a readable and easy to digest text. It will leave the reader confident that they have grasped the important issues about psychological and social development. It provides a tour of the most significant influences on the developing child, always bearing in mind the family and social context. It looks at key developmental stages, from life in the womb to the pre-school years and right up until adolescence, whilst also examining how we develop key capacities such as language, play or memory. Issues of nature and nurture are addressed and the effects of different kinds of early experiences are unpicked, looking at both individual children and larger-scale longitudinal studies. Psychological ideas and research are carefully integrated with those from neurobiology and understandings from other cultures to create a coherent and balanced view of the developing child in its context. Nurturing Natures integrates a wide array of complex academic research from different disciplines to create a book which is not only highly readable but also scientifically trustworthy. Full of fascinating findings, it provides answers to many of the questions people really want to ask about the human journey from conception into adulthood. CONTENTS 1. Social Understanding and Social Lives From Toddlerhood through to the Transition to School Claire Hughes University of Cambridge, UK Essays in Developmental Psychology Series Over the past thirty years, researchers have documented a remarkable growth in children’s social understanding between toddlerhood and the early school years. However, it is still unclear why some children’s awareness of others’ thoughts and feelings lags so far behind that of their peers. Based on research that spans an extended developmental period, this book examines this question from both social and cognitive perspectives, and investigates the real-life significance of individual differences in theory of mind. After tracing the key age-related changes in the development of theory of mind, this book focuses on variation in both children’s cognitive and family characteristics. In particular it investigates the differences in children’s ability to self-regulate, their general language skills and the quantity and quality of family conversations to explain why some children show a much more advanced social understanding than others. The second half of the book reviews the evidence for predictive links between early social understanding and later behavior, and investigates the quality of children’s interactions with friends, their ability to resolve conflict without resorting to antisocial or disruptive behavior, and diverse aspects of school adjustment. Drawing on the rich observational data gathered in her extended longitudinal study, as well as skills acquired during a six-year collaboration with Professor Judy Dunn, the author successfully integrates both cognitive and social accounts of theory of mind. Educational Psychology Handbook of Research on Schools, Schooling and Human Development Judith L. Meece, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA Jacquelynne S. Eccles, University of Michigan, USA (Eds.) Children spend more time in school than in any social institution outside the home, and schools probably exert more influence on children’s development and life chances than any environment beyond the home and neighborhood. The purpose of this book is to document some important ways schools influence children’s development and to describe various models and methods for studying schooling effects. Key features include: Comprehensive Coverage – This is the first book to provide a comprehensive review of what is known about schools as a context for human development. Topical coverage ranges from theoretical foundations to investigative methodologies and from classroom-level influences such as teacher–student relations to broader influences such as school organization and educational policies. Cross-disciplinary – This volume brings together the divergent perspectives, methods and findings of scholars from a variety of disciplines, among them educational psychology, developmental psychology, school psychology, social psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and educational policy. Chapter Structure – To ensure continuity, chapter authors describe 1) how schooling influences are conceptualized; 2) identify their theoretical and methodological approaches; 3) discuss the strengths and weaknesses of existing research; and 4) highlight implications for future research, practice, and policy. Methodologies – Chapters feature various methodologies including longitudinal studies, hierarchical linear models, experimental and quasi-experimental designs, and mixed methods. Illegal Leisure Revisited Changing Patterns of Alcohol and Drug Use in Adolescents and Young Adults Judith Aldridge, University of Manchester, UK; Fiona Measham, Lancaster University, UK; Howard Parker, University of Manchester, UK; Lisa Williams, University of Manchester, UK Adolescence and Society Series This book updates the progress into adulthood of the cohort of fourteen-year olds who were recruited and tracked until they were eighteen years old for Illegal Leisure (1998). Illegal Leisure described their adolescent journeys and lifestyles, focusing on their early regular drinking and extensive ‘recreational’ drug use. Using qualitative interviews and self-report surveys, this new book recalls the group at twenty-two and twenty-seven years of age, and relates the relationship between their transitions to adulthood and the changing role of various legal and illegal drugs in their lives.
Illegal Leisure Revisited positions the journeys of these twentysomethings against the ever-changing backdrop of a consumptionoriented leisure society, the rapid expansion of the British nighttime economy and the place of substance use in contemporary social worlds. It presents to the reader the ways in which these young people have moved into the world of work, long-term relationships and parenthood, and the resulting changes in the function and frequency of their drinking and drug-use patterns. Amid dire public health warnings about their favourite intoxicants and with the growing criminalisation of a widening array of recreational drugs, the book revisits these young people as they continue as archetypal citizens in a risk society. The book is ideal reading for researchers and undergraduate students from a variety of fields, such as developmental and social psychology, sociology, criminology, cultural and health studies. Professionals working in criminal justice, health promotion, drugs education, harm reduction and treatment will also find this book an invaluable resource. Family Life in Adolescence Patricia Noller, Emeritus Professor of Psychology, University of Queensland, Australia Sharon Atkin, Psychologist in private practice Adolescence and Society Series Stereotypes of adolescents in Western culture can be very negative, yet a small group tends to give them all a bad name. This book, based on the extensive research conducted over the last twenty years, describes how the family environment is the key to whether adolescents thrive. The authors explore which aspects of family life provide the best environment for the growth and development of young people. They particularly investigate what makes the difference between young people who develop into effective young adults and those who get involved in problem behaviours such as binge-drinking, drug-taking, premature sexual activity and delinquent or criminal activities. Topics covered include the development of individual identity, the importance of communication in the family, and how this affects the ways in which adolescents learn about dealing with conflict, solving problems and making decisions. The book also looks at the problems that are faced by adolescents whose parents divorce or those who live in stepfamilies, before focusing on the current patterns of leaving home and issues such as running away and youth homelessness. The ultimate focus of the book is on the importance of a warm and accepting family environment, which also requires responsible behaviour from young people. This book will be of help to parents and those who work with adolescents, such as teachers, social workers, youth leaders, psychologists, psychiatrists and the clergy. Readers should gain a greater understanding of the kinds of family environments that

Adolescence and Society Series “This book stands apart from a flood of hyperbole about ‘born digital children’. The authors provide an empirically anchored and analytically rigorous perspective on the role of the internet in the social lives of adolescents. This is must reading for anyone with a serious concern over children and the Internet.” - William Dutton, Director, Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, UK “Are teens really different in the Age of the Internet? What’s going on beneath the buds of their smartphones and under the fingers of their keyboards? This book uses sound, empirically-based methods to show how life on the internet and life in real life are intertwined.” - Barry Wellman, University of Toronto, Canada The debate on the social impact of information and communication technologies is particularly important for the study of adolescent life, because in their close association with friends and peers, adolescents develop life expectations, school aspirations, world views, and behaviors. Wired Youth investigates the driving forces of social interaction, such as shared interests and adolescents’ need of diversification of their social circle, and shows how online activities are closely associated with offline social behavior. This book presents an up-to-date review of the literature on youth sociability, relationship formation, and online communication, examining the way young people use the internet to construct or maintain their interpersonal relationships. Using a social network perspective, the book systematically explores the various effects of internet access and use on adolescents’ involvement in social, leisure and extracurricular activities, evaluating the arguments that suggest the internet is displacing other forms of social ties. The core of the book investigates the motivations for online relationship formation and the use of online communication for relationship maintenance. The final part of the book focuses

Studies in Adolescent Development Series This book considers the role of deception during adolescence, and explores the factors which underpin adolescents’ choice to deceive, whether these deceptions will be successful, and the ways in which such lies could be detected. While deception is considered to be antisocial or even pathological in some circumstances, the central argument of this book is that lying can be a skilled behaviour which is necessary to allow adolescents to establish autonomy. The book builds on the recent influential developmental challenge model (Hendry & Kloep, 2002, 2009), exploring how it can provide a useful explanatory framework for the development of the skill of deception in adolescence. Interpersonal and forensic settings for deceptive behaviour are referred to, and illustrated with reference to both published research and new data obtained from a variety of different interviews and focus groups with young people. The book also considers how the choice to communicate truthfully is as important as the choice to communicate deceptively in illuminating the developmental process. It concludes with a discussion of how adolescents’ deceptions could be detected and presents a range of strategies to maximize the effectiveness of interpersonal interactions with suspected deceivers. This book is ideal for researchers, practitioners working with children and young people, and parents. The observations, interviews and focus groups provide a unique insight into the factors influencing young people’s communication choices, and integrate research from developmental, social and forensic psychology. Catriona I. Macleod Rhodes University, South Africa Women and Psychology Series Why does the narrative of the negative consequences of teenage pregnancy, abortion and childbearing persist? This book outlines a critical view of ‘teenage pregnancy’ and abortion, arguing that the negative view of these issues relies on a particular understanding of adolescence. The book traces the invention of ‘adolescence’ and the imaginary wall that it constructs between young people and adults. It also examines its deeply entrenched status within a colonialist discourse that equates development of the individual with the development of civilisation, and the consequent threat of degeneration that is implied in the very notion of ‘adolescence’. Many important issues are explored, such as the invention of adolescence and the associated ideologies and contradictions; the invention of teenage pregnancy as a social problem; the construction of abortion as the new social problem; issues of race, culture and tradition in relation to teenage pregnancy; and health service provider practices, specifically in relation to managing risk. In the final chapter, an argument is made for a shift from the signifier ‘teenage pregnancy to ‘unwanted pregnancy’. Using data gathered from studies from four continents, this book highlights central issues in the global debate concerning teenage pregnancy. It is suitable for academics, postgraduate and undergraduate students of health psychology, women’s studies, nursing and sociology, as well as practitioners in the fields of youth and social work, medicine and counselling.

Gifted Lives What Happens When Gifted Children Grow Up Joan Freeman Psychologist in private practice, UK This book reveals the dramatic stories of twenty gifted children as they grew from promise to maturity in Britain. It depicts their passions, sorrows and successes, the slippery road to stardom, and investigates why some fell by the wayside while others reached fame and fortune. Most of all, it shows that no matter how glittering childhood prospects are, opportunity, personality, hard work and fate all have a part to play on the road to success. Gifted Lives reveals the triumph and trauma that accompanies those living with astounding exceptionality through their childhoods, teenage years and right through to adulthood. It throws light on the dark corners faced by the exceptionally gifted and offer ways around the unique challenges they face, such as teacher put-downs, parents who pressed too hard, abrupt changes of social class, competing career choices – and fame and fortune. Controversial lessons are also to be found through the extraordinary stories told and the book shows how labelling children as ‘gifted’ can actually result in dire consequences. These lessons are vital for teachers, parents and youngsters hoping to fulfill outstanding potential. Joan Freeman’s intimate study into the lives of the gifted is unique because of its deep approach over more than three decades. The results are revealed in this definitive account and it makes for fascinating and often moving reading. Readers will identify with many of the intriguing aspects of the people featured, and learn something about themselves from them too. Evidence-Based Policymaking Insights from Policy-Minded Researchers and Research-Minded Policymakers Karen Bogenschneider, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA Thomas J. Corbett (retired), Institute for Research on Poverty, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA “This book ... tells a story that is informative and engaging. ... The authors have done an excellent job in communicating the different voices and issues of researchers and policy makers. ... [It] would be of interest to researchers interested in having their research more effectively utilized in public policy. ... Policy makers would find it helpful in understanding the academic/research community. ... I could see this book as an excellent text in a professional issues class and/or a program development and/or evaluation class.” - Donald G. Unger, University of Delaware, USA “Very few researchers have much training in working in the policymaking arena. This book can help to remedy that weakness both within the professional market and in the training of graduate students. I would definitely consider adopting the book for a graduate course on family policy. ... It offers an insightful and timely consideration of how we might better integrate the research and policymaking cultures.” - Mick Coleman, University of Georgia, USA This book is for those who believe that good government should be based on hard evidence, and that research and policy ought to go hand-in-hand. Unfortunately, no such bond exists. Rather, there is a substantial gap – some say chasm – between the production of knowledge and its utilization. Despite much contrary evidence, the authors propose there is a way of doing public policy in a more reflective manner, and that a hunger for evidence and objectivity does exist. This book examines ways to enhance evidence-based policymaking, striking a balance between theory and practice. The attention to theory builds a greater understanding of why miscommunication and mistrust occur. Until we better appreciate the forces that divide researchers and policymakers, we cannot effectively construct strategies for bringing them together. The book is pragmatic, drawing on advice from some of the best and brightest informants from both the research and policy communities. In their own voices, researchers provide incisive analysis about how to bridge the research/policy divide, and policymakers provide insights about why they use research, what kind is most useful, where they seek it, and how they screen its quality. The book breaks through stereotypes about what policymakers are like, and provides an insider’s view of how the policy process really works. Readers will learn what knowledge, skills, approaches, and attitudes are needed to take research findings from the laboratory to lawmaking bodies, and how to evaluate one’s success in doing so. The authors review the latest empirical and theoretical work. However, nothing substitutes for their extensive experience working at the interface of research and policy, between the

Essays in Developmental Psychology Series This book re-examines the case of Nadia, a child aged six who had been drawing with phenomenal skill and visual realism from the age of three, despite having autism and severe learning difficulties. The original research was published in 1977 and caused great interest among psychologists, artists and the general reader. Nadia Revisited updates her story and re-considers the theories that endeavour to explain her extraordinary talent. As well as summarising the central issues from the original case study, and presenting her remarkable drawings, the book explains Nadia’s subsequent development and present situation in light of the recent research on autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and representational drawing in children. Nadia’s abilities are contextualised amongst recent studies of the drawing development of normal/average children, and the anomaly which Nadia represents is examined. The book also considers savant syndromes – the condition in which those with autism or other serious mental disabilities have areas of ability that contrast dramatically with their general functioning. Lorna Selfe analyses how these research findings can be used to discuss broad theories of developmental psychology, and discusses possible links between prodigious talents and underlying neurological dysfunction. As such the book is ideal for students and teachers of developmental psychology and neuropsychology, education and special education as well as art and art education. Parents of autistic children or those with related disorders, learning difficulties or special needs will also be interested in the discussions presented in this book. Contents 1. Child Abuse Protecting Children from Violence Evidence-Based Interventions James M. Lampinen, University of Arkansas, USA Kathleen J. Sexton-Radek, Elmhurst College, Illinois, USA (Eds.) “A major strength of this volume is that it focuses on evidence-based practices. This by itself will add to the field. ... [It] highlights the complex nature of children’s exposure to violence and the importance of considering all contextual levels when trying to understand violence exposure. ... I can see this book being beneficial to social work students (and social workers) as well as practitioners working with children, and graduate students in clinical/ counseling programs.” - Manfred H.M.van Dulmen, Kent State University, USA Providing an evidence-based understanding of the causes and consequences of violence against children, experts in the field examine the best practices used to help protect children from violence. Various types of violence are reviewed, including physical and sexual abuse, (cyber-)bullying, human trafficking, online predators, abductions, and war. In addition, it reviews the various perpetrators of such violence, including parents and relatives, strangers, other children, and societal institutions. The possible outcomes of such violence, including physical injuries, death, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorders, and damage to the social fabric of the local community, are also explored. To enhance accessibility, each contributor addresses common themes: • Opening case studies dramatically illustrate the human cost of abuse and neglect • Empirically-driven estimates of the scope of problem to better understand who is at risk and why • Empirically-driven testing of interventions to maximize effectiveness of programs • How current research compares to public perception and the impact on public policy • The worldwide problem of violence against children • Evidence-based recommendations for reducing violence against children. The book opens with a review of the history of the problem, the methodological approaches used to study it, and current “best practice” prevention strategies. The methods used to identify peer victims are then explored. Next, child eyewitness memory is examined, including the most effective techniques for maximizing

This is followed by the research on missing and abducted children, including the effectiveness of recovery programs such as supermarket campaigns and forensic age profiles. Next, how the Internet is used in the victimization of children is explored, including tips to help protect children online. Public attitudes toward sex offender registration laws are then reviewed, followed by vulnerabilities that include genetic, neuropsychological, temperamental, cognitive, perceptual and social factors. International perspectives on protecting children from violence and global health inequities are then addressed. The book concludes with recommendations for future research.

European Journal of Developmental Psychology Published on behalf of the European Society for Developmental Psychology Selected for inclusion in the Social Science Citation Index! EDITOR Willem Koops, Utrecht University, The Netherlands This journal publishes innovative original theoretical, empirical, methodological and review papers dealing with psychological development and developmental psychopathology during infancy, childhood and adolescence. It also publishes papers on social policy based on developmental science and which are relevant to education, health or wellbeing in infancy, childhood and adolescence. It is keen to receive papers relevant to European developmental psychology in that they take account of topics such as European history, European policy or cultural diversity and their relevance to developmental matters. Journals title
Journals
in Developmental Psychology Applied Developmental Science From 2010 included in the Journal Citation Reports (© Thomson Reuters) EDITORS Richard M. Lerner, Tufts University, USA Celia B. Fisher, Fordham University, USA The focus of this multidisciplinary journal is the synthesis of research and application to promote positive development across the life span and across the globe. The journal publishes research that generates descriptive and explanatory knowledge about dynamic and reciprocal person-environment interactions essential to informed public dialogue, social policy, and preventive and development optimizing interventions. This includes research relevant to the development of individuals and social systems across the life span -- including the wide range of familial, biological, societal, cultural, physical, ecological, political and historical settings of human development. The applied developmental science orientation is defined by three conjoint emphases. The applied aspect reflects its direct implication for what individuals, families, practitioners, and policymakers do. The developmental aspect emphasizes a focus on systematic and successive changes within individual and social systems that occur across the life span. This assumption stresses the importance of understanding normative and atypical processes as they emerge within different developmental periods and across diverse biological, physical, social, cultural and political settings. The science aspect underscores the need to utilize a range of research methods to collect reliable and objective information in a systematic manner to test the validity of theory and application. The convergence of these three aspects leads to a fostering of a reciprocal relationship between theory and application as a cornerstone of applied developmental science, one wherein empirically based, developmental theory not only guides intervention strategies and social policy, but is influenced by the outcome of these activities. Furthermore, the convergence calls for a multidisciplinary perspective aimed at integrating information and skills drawn from relevant biological, medical, social, and behavioral science disciplines. EDITOR Carolyn Aldwin, Oregon State University, USA CO-EDITOR William M. Kurtines, Florida International University, USA Research in Human Development (RHD) is moving away from an isolated emphasis on particular stages ranging from infancy to later adulthood and from a reduction of multiple levels of organization to variables or processes associated with one discipline. Accordingly, RHD seeks to promote a shift away from research focused on development at particular stages (early childhood, adolescence, middle age, older adulthood) and from separate fields of inquiry to a more inclusive, integrative, and interdisciplinary approach to the study of human development across the entire life span. The integration of the person and his or her context across life is the focus of the scholarship promoted by this journal; as such, multilevel, multivariate, and integrative longitudinal study of person-context relations is emphasized. Specifically, an interdisciplinary focus that integratively incorporates biological, psychological, sociological, anthropological, economic, and historical perspectives is stressed in the pages of RHD. To encompass such breadth, the publication incorporates a variety of research methods--from quantitative to qualitative. Moreover, the journal seeks to promote scholarship on the social, cultural, national, and global contexts of human development across diverse ethnic and racial groups employing multiple methods. Finally, RHD seeks to promote scholarship that informs and changes public policies and social programs that promote positive and healthy human development for all people. In short, by providing a forum for research that is life-span oriented, interdisciplinary, contextual, and methodologically diverse, the journal will significantly advance the field of human development. Manuscript Submission Individual, unsolicited manuscripts are not considered. A Special Issue of Laterality Changes in Emotion Lateralisation throughout Childhood Guest Editors: Victoria J. Bourne, Dawn Watling, and Lance Workman With the emergence of interdisciplinary fields such as social, developmental, and affective neuroscience an increasing amount of research now examines the way in which brain-behaviour interactions develop. The way in which emotion is lateralised in the brain has received a great deal of attention, with two primary and contrasting hypotheses proposed: the right hemisphere hypothesis and the valence hypothesis. Examining the way in which emotion lateralisation develops will advance our understanding of the relationship between brain development and social interaction.
