Inside: Latest News Events Diary Our Fundraisers
Welcome I’m sure you’ll be pleased to hear that, at Phyllis Tuckwell, we’re caring for more and more people affected by a terminal illness, extending and improving our Hospice Care, whilst also funding these developments through our many events and activities. Our Hospice Care at Home team, now working out of the Beacon Centre in Guildford, goes from strength to strength, as we continue to develop this service which cares for people who want to spend their last days at home, like Ash’s mum Helen. In their story, on page 5, you can learn more about how we care for both patients and their families, and find out how Ash is now raising money to support our work. Heather, whose father was cared for on our In-Patient Unit, has also been fundraising for PTHC, and you can read her story on page 5 too, while on page 3 you can find out more about how we have cared for another of our patients, Robert, and his family. Our new Open House afternoons have proved to be very popular, offering people a chance to find out more about Hospice Care - if you are interested, pop along to the Hospice in Farnham any Tuesday between 2pm and 4pm. We’ve also been sprucing up our In-Patient Unit, making it more of a home-from-home for those patients who are staying at the Hospice, which you can read about on page 4. I hope you have seen and heard our awareness campaign that challenges the misconceptions which many people have about Hospice Care. Our thanks go to the patients and carers who have shared their stories, and made this campaign possible. It runs alongside 3 Robert’s Story and supports the excellent work our Fundraising and Retail teams do to generate enough income to fund all of our important services. 4 Latest News

All these developments and improvements help us maintain our position as an outstanding provider of supportive and end of life care for our local community – but we wouldn’t be able to do any of it without you, so thank you once again for your generous support. Happy reading!

know how to deal with it - they don’t see that I’m still me. It’s helped meeting people who understand, and patients who have outlived their prognosis. None of us has a sell-by date stamped on us. Nobody really knows how long we’ve got left.” When staff saw how exhausted Robert was, they suggested a week’s respite care on the In-Patient Unit. He accepted, and afterwards felt physically and mentally recharged. He and his wife Rosemary have also had counselling and hypnotherapy to help them to come to terms with Robert’s illness. “It’s not just for me,” he says. “It’s like a big umbrella that goes over the whole family.”
Robert's Story When Robert fell over whilst out in the garden, the handle of the rake he was using jabbed into his stomach. Bruised and sore, he went to A&E, worried he might have internal injuries, but scans showed instead a tumour on his kidney. Robert had cancer. The tumour was removed and Robert underwent chemotherapy, but two years later it returned, this time in his liver and bones, and he was referred to Phyllis Tuckwell. “Hospice means end of life – that was all I could think,” he remembers. “But it’s quite the opposite.” He was taken to the Dove Lounge, where Day Hospice is held. Glass doors run its length, opening onto the gardens. A quiet room provides space for patients to talk to doctors, nurses or counsellors, while another holds art, pottery and creative writing classes. Here, Robert can access treatments such as aromatherapy, reflexology and massage, and meet other patients. “It can be lonely, being terminally ill,” he confides. “Friends don’t
Robert attends our Brush with Art and pottery classes, and describes experiencing a feeling of tranquillity whilst painting. At horticulture sessions run by Occupational Therapist Lisi Pilgrem, he is able to pot flowers and make displays to take home. “I used to like my garden,” he says. “It’s nice to do a bit of planting again.” Occupational Therapist Catherine Fortescue has visited Robert at home to assess his need for specialised equipment, and has arranged for the provision of a profiling bed to decrease his discomfort at night and equipment to help him use his bath. Clinical Nurse Specialists keep in contact with his GP and hospital, ensuring that everyone is kept up-to-date on his condition, and a volunteer from our Hospice Home Support team visits him weekly, to take him out for a few hours. “He’s been a God-send,” says Robert. “We go into town, get a cup of coffee. He’s helped me to slow down and not get ahead of myself worrying about the future.” “Thanks to Phyllis Tuckwell, I wake up and think ‘I’ve got today’ rather than ‘when is it going to happen?’ ” he concludes.

Latest News Open House welcomes all Our new Open House afternoons offer an opportunity to find out more about our Hospice Care. Anyone who would like to know more about the services which we provide is welcome to drop in to the Hospice in Farnham on a Tuesday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to greet visitors and answer any questions, in the relaxed and informal setting of the Dove Lounge. There’s no need to let us know you’re coming – just drop in!
IPU refurbishment Our In-Patient Unit, which cares for around 350 patients every year, has now been fully refurbished – thanks to those who donated to our Home from Home appeal. The appeal raised the £60,000 we needed to be able to repaint, replace bathroom fittings and, most importantly, address the damp problem which was becoming increasingly evident. In addition to this amazing sum, a further £5,000 was donated by The Screwfix Foundation, a charity which supports projects to fix, repair, maintain and improve properties and facilities for those in need, and £4,000 was donated by Zurich Community Trust, who are long-term supporters of PTHC and whom we will be partnering with increasingly in 2016. The refurbishment started last summer and most of the rooms were finished by Christmas, with the remainder of the work being completed at the beginning of this year.
UK care tops poll A recent study has ranked the UK’s End of Life Care as the best in the world. The 2015 Quality of Death Index looked at palliative care given in 80 countries globally, scoring the UK 93.9 out of 100 and describing it as ‘second to none’. The report praised the UK’s strong hospice movement, crediting it as one of the reasons for its top position - along with affordability and a deep community engagement - and giving it a perfect score for the quality of care given. We are very proud to be part of this recognition.

for Phyllis in 2016 Many of those whose lives we have touched, go on to raise money for us. As we launch our 2016 GetFit for Phyllis campaign, will these two incredible fundraisers inspire you? As Heather prepared for her first Great Swim, her father, Graham, was facing a different challenge. His lung disease had been confirmed as terminal. Although ill, he remained relatively well. However, as Heather completed her swim, she received a call. Things had worsened. The doctor had visited and told Graham that he was dying. Graham was referred to Phyllis Tuckwell and, after a visit from our Clinical Nurse Specialists, was admitted to our IPU. Heather and her family were offered a relatives’ room at the Hospice, but chose instead to eat and sleep by Graham’s bedside, staying with him until the end. “We were looked after as well as he was,” she says. Four days later, Graham died peacefully, with his family by his side. Combining swimming with fundraising, Heather completed all of the UK’s five Great Swims, raising £2,000 for Phyllis Tuckwell. “The average water temperature is around 16 degrees,” Heather smiles. But with a wetsuit to keep her warm, she revels in the cold, clear water.
Ash’s challenge, in contrast, takes him to Sri Lanka. After his mother was cared for by our Hospice Care at Home team, he signed up to the Wild Elephant Trail, a 150 mile, six-day race which sees participants run alongside paddy fields, through jungles and past temples, camping each night in local villages. “It’s around a marathon a day, with one 35 mile day,” he says. “There are only 50 of us taking part, and we’ll carry our own provisions.” Ash was inspired after seeing the care which staff at Phyllis Tuckwell’s Beacon Centre gave his mother when she was diagnosed with cancer. Helen was experiencing abdominal pains and during an operation doctors found cancer cells on her stomach. After further surgery and chemotherapy she seemed to recover well, but the cancer returned. Helen didn’t want to go into a hospice. Instead she went home, where nurses from the Beacon Centre visited her, providing round-the-clock support. “Having the nurses coming to see Mum, day and night, was invaluable,” says Ash. Our Occupational Therapists provided bathroom aids, while care assistants helped Helen brush her teeth and wash. As she became bedbound, nurses visited throughout the day to move her, preventing bedsores. “They would sit with her too,” says Ash, “giving Dad a break and time to eat.” And as Helen became less responsive, nurses prepared Ash and his family for the end. Helen passed away peacefully in bed at home, where she wanted to be.

Recent Activities Will-ing to help! Our annual Make a Will Fortnight, in September, saw twelve local solicitor firms waive their normal Will writing fee for the preparation of a basic or standard Will, in return for a donation to PTHC. Over £10k was raised, almost doubling the 2014 target, making it the most successful Fortnight to date. In addition, some donors also agreed to leave a gift in their Will to Phyllis Tuckwell. As well as helping fund our care, gifts in Will
Dash of Colour On Saturday 5th September, 1,200 fundraisers of all ages gathered at Frimley Lodge Park for our annual Dash of Colour, which this year raised just over £78,000! The participants were showered in colourful powder paint as they ran, jogged and walked the 5k fun run, highlighting the colour we bring to the lives of our patients and their families. Thanks to everyone who took part and all those who made the event possible: the Greenspace team at Frimley Lodge Park, Cane Adams, Premier Panel Skills, Nuffield Health, Branston Adams, Red Mist Leisure, ProjectFive, Morrisons Law, the Spar at Elstead, The Window Cleaning Company and Paul Fitchett Images. Reindeer and Elf Runs 2015 saw nearly 5,000 children from 24 schools, pre-schools and nurseries take part in our Reindeer and Elf Runs. Some of the schools were old hands, while others were new to the Runs, but all of them showed great enthusiasm and helped us raise over £41,000! This fantastic figure has contributed to us raising over £151,000 in the last five years through this Christmas initiative. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved. If your school would like to take part in 2016, please call 01252 729446 or email fundraising@pth.org.uk
Support Groups
A Summer of Music Held in Farnborough on 11th & 12th July, 2015’s Picnic to Music in the Park drew in crowds of around 4,000 each day and raised an amazing £75,000. On Saturday, the Counterfeit Stones rocked the stage with classics such as Brown Sugar and Satisfaction, while the Secret Police led with favourites such as Roxanne and Message in a Bottle. On Sunday, The Magic of Motown celebrated 50 years of Motown music with classics from the Four Tops, the Supremes, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye. Thank you to the Rotary Club of Farnborough for once again organising this hugely popular event.
A huge THANK YOU to our nine Support Groups (Fleet, Camberley, Crondall, Frensham & Dockenfield, Rowledge and Wrecclesham, Cranleigh, Farnham, Yateley and Heatherside) who, in 2015, raised an incredible £32k for PTHC. This huge amount of money was generated through a range of events including bucket collections, cheese and wine evenings, music concerts, bridge teas, plant sales, fashion evenings and Christmas fayres. Their help raised both money and awareness of our work, and we would like to say a huge thank you to them, and to everyone who attended their events! If you are interested in joining or starting a Support Group, please call 01252 729446 or email fundraising@pth.org.uk
Tongham’s Samfest, held on Saturday 8th August, then picked up the beat, with headline act The Chilli Fighters supported by Dawn Moss, Mellor, Cameron Sanderson, The Cobbles and The Papers. Held in memory of Sam Wright, wife of the event’s organiser Michael Wright, it included a fun fair, arts and crafts market, face painters, entertainers, food outlets, a charity bar and a third live music area – the UPLAY tent – which held open mic sessions for musicians of all ages and abilities. Our thanks go to all involved in organising this event, which raised a fantastic £15,000 for PTHC.
White Dove Transport Show Helped by the beautiful weather and high numbers of exhibitors and attendees, 2015’s White Dove Transport Show raised a record amount of money for Phyllis Tuckwell, reaching an amazing £15,000. The money raised will go towards funding the vehicles which we use to transport patients to and from the Hospice and Beacon Centre, and which our second-hand Furniture Shops use to collect and deliver items of furniture.
Thanks go to Grizzly Tools, Thorne Leggett, Forest Motors, Motor-Link Distribution, North Hants Tyres and BRCC Classic Cars. Also Alistair Blaber, Paul Fitchett Images, Echoes of Elvis, The TCC Band and That Sound.

Christmas is traditionally a time of giving, and this year was no exception when it came to local companies supporting our work! Many made a donation to us in lieu of sending Christmas cards, while others held events such as Festive Fashion days and in-house raffles. Novartis, in Frimley, for example, held a raffle with all prizes donated by their security staff, and raised a fantastic £1,407. A huge thank you to everyone who took part in this festive fundraising, which raised money to help fund the support we provide to over 250 patients and relatives every day.
Bridges Estate Agents are proud of their outstanding customer service, and are well known as a local company which gets involved with its local community. To celebrate their 25th anniversary, and in addition to arranging a raft of charitable events and supporting local schools, they have agreed a new and unique partnership with Phyllis Tuckwell in 2016.
In the past six months, law firm Stevens and Bolton, of Guildford, has raised a staggering £18,000 through a wide and varied range of events, including an Auction of Promises and a Christmas Carol concert. Farnham-based recruitment firm Fraser Dove has pledged to hold Staff Volunteer Days once a month, when staff will help with various activities at the Hospice, including a games afternoon for our Day Care patients, event preparations and car washing!
Bridges have become an Official Charity Partner with PTHC and will be supporting our work this year in several ways. As well as donating a percentage of their 2016 profits to PTHC and engaging their staff in a number of fundraising initiatives, they have sponsored three of our Hospice Care at Home nurses’ vehicles – which will be out on the streets of our catchment area every day, supporting patients who have chosen to spend their last days or weeks in the comfort of their own home. We are delighted to welcome Bridges as an Official Charity Partner and thank them for their incredible support this year.
