As Autumn approaches there are a number of Open Days and Open Evenings, tours of schools and the chance for potential new pupils to see secondary schools, colleges and academies at work. Parents with Year 5 & 6 students who will be choosing their secondary school or academy in the coming months will find the following pages useful for diary dates… Celebrating the past , dance studio, gymnasium; a state embracing the future of the art Science, Technology Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School cares for every single student. We believe that every child has the capacity for outstanding achievement. Our mission is to help each individual unlock that capacity. We hope and expect that our young people will grow into articulate, caring and compassionate adults who are ready for the next stage in their development and learning. Our exceptional learning environment and our sense of community make this a truly unique place to learn and work. We are fortunate to have fantastic sports facilities including a swimming pool, 3G pitches, tennis courts,

and Art facilities, but most importantly highly qualified and motivated staff who work to support all students to be the best they can be.

Mr Mckeown, Headteacher Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School provides a first-class curriculum and nurtures talent to help all of its students achieve personal excellence. Together we can ensure that our young people are safe, happy and ambitious in every area of the school.

John Spendluffe Technology College The summer has been a busy time at John Spendluffe. The school prides itself on consistent academic success and once again the summer examination results were a cause for celebration. Strong exam results followed impressive success in a range of enrichment events from Rock Challenge, a performing arts event, to Young Enterprise last academic year. It is this balance of academic study and wider curriculum opportunities that supports student success. Along with the events in school, there was much site activity over the summer as around £100,000 was spent on building improvements. This has significantly improved the oldest building in the school and adds to a programme of new build and refurbishment completed over the last couple of years. All of this means a positive start to the new academic year!

of families, evidenced by our largest Year 7 intake in living memory starting this September.

Our Ofsted Parent View rating at the time of our recent inspection indicated 100% of parents would recommend us to another parent. In their visit this year, Ofsted commented on the strong leadership of the Headteacher and senior team, the diligence of governors and how learners demonstrated respect for themselves, for each other and for their learning. In recent years we have won a Good Schools Guide award for progress and have been in the top 25% of schools, also for progress. At De Aston, we follow a Growth Mindset philosophy. We believe that no matter what your ability is, it is effort that ignites that ability and turns it into success. Our mantra is: ‘Believe. Strive. Achieve.’

Lincoln Castle Academy When Year 6 pupils leave their primary schools, they feel successful; they have been the big fish, albeit in a relatively small pond. Starting secondary school can be worrying: they feel lost in endless corridors, with sixth formers twice their height, books, folders, maps, long days... At Lincoln Castle Academy, we believe the transition into Year 7 to be an exciting time. With care and guidance, our new Year 7 students make the transition successfully. In our Summer School they can learn the surroundings, meet staff, and each other, and on Day 1, they visit Lincoln Castle as a whole year group to learn and more importantly, bond. Transition goes further; we consider every year to be a transition, new challenges, new resolutions, and support all the time. That could be why for three consecutive years, we’ve been fully subscribed into Year 7. You can see for yourself at our Open Evening, Wednesday 13th September, 6.30pm-8.30pm.

Branston Community Academy Branston Community Academy has rightly gained a reputation as one of the very best schools in Lincolnshire. The school is rated by Ofsted as outstanding in all areas and in 2015 and 2016 the school received two national awards for the academic achievements of students for both progress and attainment at GCSE.

This is all within a school site that boasts excellent facilities enhanced further by £3 million worth of recent investment. But it is not just the exceptional educational achievements which sets Branston apart – it is the desire to achieve academic excellence in a truly caring, supportive and nurturing environment which the school is most proud of, fostering values of individual aspiration, tolerance and compassion. Ofsted has praised the behaviour, resilience and kindness of students along with teachers who ‘enthuse students with a love for learning and foster a ‘can do’ culture. Community is at the heart of this school and manifests itself not only in the relationships within the school but also the close ties with local organisations, businesses and people. The Academy is home to a thriving nursery and Heron’s gym, complete with a pool for public use. Art, Music and Sport play a large part of Academy life. Visitors and local dignitaries are welcomed to the Academy’s annual musical production and also enjoy the numerous concerts and shows

throughout the year. The views of students and parents show these are more than just fine words. In a national survey both rated the school as outstanding on every level. The school is justifiably proud of its success and students and welcomes visitors to see this in action either at the advertised open evening (12th September 2017) or during a visit which can be arranged by contacting the Academy office. www.branstonca.lincs.sch.uk

LITTLE OWLS NURSERY WINS 2017 CELEBRATING EVERY CHILD AWARD!

Children’s book ‘The Lincolnshire Puppy’ grabs commendation at national education awards

The URS music centre in South Hykeham opens it’s doors once again for a brand new academic year this September. Already well established, we have recruited several new teachers covering instrumental tuition and music theory allowing us to broaden our range of services. New and returning students can expect a warm welcome as we look forward to an exciting and dynamic year of musical events and performances.

Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust are offering an amazing Family Lemur Experience for 4 in this issue - see the advert on page 5 to enter…

Little Owls Nursery in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire has been awarded the Achievement for All Award: Early Years at the Celebrating Every Child Awards - a national awards scheme that recognises and celebrates the achievement of children, young people, leaders and teachers. The Awards, run by Achievement for All in partnership with Teaching Times, were hosted by Achievement for All Ambassador, David Gandy and Achievement for All CEO, Professor Sonia Blandford. Little Owls Nursery was recognised for its achievement in ensuring every child is included, regardless of background, challenge or need. The nursery has shown strong leadership and a true commitment to staff, parents and children resulting in a significant shift in the way parents are supporting empowering them with the confidence and skills to support their child’s learning.

Our audio technicians are looking forward to a busy year ahead recording our students’ songwriting and compositions. CDs and downloads to follow soon. Congratulations to all our students in their recent exams and auditions. For further information and to book instrumental lessons call 07739313551.

This fantastic experience allows you to enter our family of Ring-Tailed Lemurs enclosure for a real one-toone encounter. Let them sit on your shoulder and use you as a jump pad to get some great photo’s. Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Dickonhill Road, Friskney, Boston PE22 8PP. For more details go online www.lincswildlife.com

Sharon Holtby, Director at Little Owls Nursery, said: “We are truly delighted to receive this award in recognition of the hard work and dedication of working in partnership with parents, children and practitioners to help each child achieve their expected outcomes and improve their life chances irrespective of backgrounds.” David Gandy, Achievement for All Ambassador and Host of the 2017 Celebrating Every Child Awards, said: “One in five children across the UK do not achieve expected outcomes irrespective of the area they come from or their background. This means that thousands of children face barriers that limit their life chances and these can have life-long impacts on job prospects, health and wellbeing. “These important Awards recognise the vital work and achievements of children, individuals, schools, colleges and early years settings across the country to challenge these issues and make a positive impact on children, young people and communities as a whole.” For further information about Achievement for All visit afaeducation.org.

It’s been a busy and exciting few months for Tattershall Farm Park, we won our second Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence in June this year and we were over the moon. It’s particularly rewarding to read that our visitors recognise our £5.50 entry price offers really good value for money for a day out. If you’ve not been to Tattershall Farm Park for a while, expect to see some big changes. In July we added an indoor pedal tractor track, and 2 huge jumping pillows and updated our 20m climbing wall too! The change doesn’t stop there, back in February we added a permanent Bird of Prey Display and in August alone we have 2 new Emu, a little (late) lamb and a young fawn born too. The number and variety of interesting animals we have for our visitors to meet just keeps growing. We’ve just added bottle feeding young cows to the list of ‘Cuddles Corner’ activities we offer too. Look out for our popular special event days, anything from Free Pony Rides or Exotic Animal Encounter Events to The Gruffalo (joining us for appearances throughout the day) on September 17th.

A children’s book which encourages primary school pupils across Lincolnshire to aim high in their ambitions has won a commendation at a national education awards. The Lincolnshire Puppy is an illustrated story telling the tale of a mischievous dog who gets into all sorts of scrapes until his friends show him that learning is fun and a route to be anything he wants to be. With references to famous Lincolnshire landmarks and institutions, from Lincoln Cathedral to the Red Arrows, the book aims to build confidence and aspiration in young children so that they can realise their ambitions – and discover that learning can also be fun. It is a publication from the Lincolnshire Outreach Network – a partnership of higher education providers from across Lincolnshire led by the University of Lincoln. It is written by Elly Sample with illustrations by Ruddocks Design of Lincoln and a foreword by the broadcaster and naturalist Chris Packham, a Visiting Professor at Lincoln. Free copies of The Lincolnshire Puppy were posted to almost 300 primary schools across the region for Early Years and Year 1 classes in the 2016/17 school year. A competition was also launched for children of other age groups to claim their free copy by sending in stories and pictures about what they want to be when they are older. The first print run of 10,000 books quickly ran out and a further batch of the same size was ordered to meet demand. Elly Sample, Director of Communications, Development & Marketing at the University of Lincoln, said: “We are delighted to be recognised by HEIST for our engagement with primary school children across Lincolnshire.

Making the last year at primary school, the best! Stepping over the threshold of the Year Six classroom as they embark on the last leg of their primary school journey is a big milestone for children up and down the country. It’s the end of an era and an important year where they will be encouraged to be more independent, grow in confidence and explore the boundaries of their comfort zone. So with lots to look forward to, how can parents and children prepare for secondary school? PTA UK’s Marketing and Communications Manager Sarah West, gives us the low-down. The excitement is mounting. You’re well into the first term of your last year at primary school: it’s time to make those final choices for secondary school and teachers and children will be gearing up for the SATs. But it’s the end of an era, so don’t let the final precious ‘moments’ that your children will experience in these primary years, pass you by.

less interaction between parents and almost certainly fewer opportunities to engage with others at the gates. The experience is rewarding and will stand you in good stead if you do decide to join the PTA or parent group at your child’s new secondary school where the opportunities may be different but all help to build the school community.

There will be harvest festivals, Christmas plays, spring recitals, sports days and summer fairs to enjoy as well as a likely ‘residential trip’ where Year 6 children may get the chance to take part in activity-filled and action-packed time away from their homes and families, perhaps even for the first time. There’ll be photos to compile, Year Books to produce, end of year parties to organise and many a thank you to say. And in amongst this there’ll be the preparation for the next important phase in your child’s school career… their passage to Key Stage 3 and most likely, a new school.

2. Volunteer your time and skills on something for the Year 6 leavers (including your own).

So with all this in mind, we’ve gathered together our top tips on making the most of your and your child’s last year:

1. Get involved!

If you’ve never helped out on the PTA, or your participation has dwindled over time, why not give it one final go and enjoy doing something worthwhile with the families you’ve gotten to know over the past few years? Secondary school is very different from the smaller school community you are used to. There’s generally

If you feel you’re short on time, how about getting involved in a specific project, like coordinating the hoodies for leavers, helping out with the class party or buying the gifts for the staff. You could even arrange a ‘leaving party’ for the parents in your year. It’s not just the end of an era for the children, it is for you too.

3. Share your experiences

You’ve learned so much and shared so many experiences with other families at the school that you probably don’t even realise the wealth of information and advice you’ve got up your sleeve. Why not consider supporting the school parent council or forum and encourage newer families to get involved. Sharing your views with other parents and the teaching community on the new homework policy or changes to the school uniform for example, and encouraging others to share their opinion is important in helping parents to see themselves as ‘partners’ in their children’s education. You may only be

there for a few more months, but you can still make a difference.

4. Go on the school trip!

If you’ve never been able to accompany the class on a school trip, why not give it a go? You’ve got the experience now to know what’s likely to come up in the school diary, so plan accordingly and book off the time well in advance. There are always sporting and cultural events taking place, so see what interests you and make the most of it.

5. One last fundraising push?

Over the years, your children will have benefited from the resources, activities and opportunities that the school PTA has provided through all of its fundraising efforts. If you’ve got the skills, why not consider a final homage to these efforts by offering to fill in a grant funding application; set up an environmental task force to improve the school garden; or club together with other parents in your year to leave a legacy, such as a ‘friendship bench’.

5. Enter the dads’ or mums’ race on sports day. Oh go on. You know you want to!
