Households are here to celebrate a wedding but not all want this happy event to happen, old rivalries and jealousies still abound – one in particular‌

www.wildpinespark.com Enjoy a memorable experience in the trees at Wild Pines Park near Market Rasen. As well as a great day out for families and friends we work with schools and colleges from around the region and we are happy to plan programmes to suit your needs. For schools we typically offer a day of activities including ropes course, archery and a treasure hunt at a discounted rate. The day starts at 10am and finishes at about 3pm with a short break for lunch. It provides rapid and effective team building as participants learn to rely on each other in an outdoor adventure context. The best size for schools is between 20 and 50 students split into two groups (although we can take more), with one group on the ropes course in the morning whilst the second takes on the other challenges, swapping over after lunch. One of our instructors will be watching from either afar or up close throughout to help and assist anyone that may need it. We also have a superb archery range suitable for all the family. The session lasts between 45 minutes to an hour, with loads of arrows, lots of rounds, tuition, practice, competition and prizes. Its like the Olympics, slightly lower standards but definitely more fun! The treasure hunt takes place across the whole site. Find the clues to unlock the padlock to the treasure chest and take home your treats. Great for all ages from young to old. We have two maps to complete, one is easy and one is very hard. Finish the red course (easy) for the prize and negotiate the blue (hard) course in the time limit to get onto our wall of fame!

David Almond (Walker Hb Brown, £10.99)

Bert is having an ordinary day driving his bus with the usual aggravations until an angel appears in his pocket. Not knowing what else to do, he takes him home to his wife Betty who instantly falls in love with him and they name him Angelino. He lights up their lives and enchants everyone he meets, having a positive effect on them — except perhaps Acting Head Teacher Mrs Mole — until a mysterious master of disguise keeps turning up with the aim of kidnapping Angelino for a mysterious ‘Boss’. Mission accomplished, some very brave children who have been captivated by Angelino go to his rescue. This is a heartwarming story full of gentle humour, as captivating as the title character, whose personality is further enhanced by the charming, expressive illustrations. Large print encourages developing readers onto medium length novels.

Tilly and the Time Machine - Adrian Edmondson (Puffin, £6.99) When Tilly is woken in the middle of the night by a loud explosion she isn’t surprised it was caused by her scientist father, or that he calls her out to see his invention. Life has been a bit mad since her mother died. Learning he has built a Time Machine the only place Tilly wants to go is back to her sixth birthday when her mum was alive. But the machine goes wrong trapping her father in the past. Although young and small (but average for her age!) it is up to Tilly to get her dad back. Home alone she first has to see off thieves Macaulay Culkin style then go on an adventurous journey through time searching for her dad. Will she be able to bring him back? Find out in this hilarious, gentle story full of fun and touching moments, not to mention some interesting, though maybe not completely accurate, historical interludes! Fair size print and some pictures encourage newly developing readers onto medium length novels.

Norman the Norman was small and clumsy, not at all like his warrior father - Great Big Norman. Sadly Great Big Norman had been killed in a fight against ten Bretons. He managed to kill 7 of them, but the remaining three killed him. They were so impressed with him they all wanted to bury him on their land - so each buried a third of him. Norman received Big Norman’s very big sword, which meant it was in extremely unsafe hands. When Norman set off to visit all of his father’s graves, he didn’t intend to avenge his father (particularly as he had no idea what that meant), but thanks to a lack of sword control, he ended up unknowingly doing just that, as well as many intentional good deeds. This book should come with a warning, it can cause severe face ache from crying with laughter. With large print and lots of pictures it is a perfect bridge from picture books to novels, and great fun for all ages and abilities.

Just Like My Daddy - David Melling (Hodder, £6.99) I love this book! The lion cub is very proud of his daddy and wants to grow up to be just like him: handsome, clever and brave. His mum doesn’t see him in quite the same light and says he is already like his daddy, especially when he lazes around! While the few sentences tell a simple story, the hilarious pictures paint a much fuller view of what daddy is really like, but he still looks gorgeous! This is a fantastic book for beginner or reluctant readers, great to read aloud and share, but equally fun for all abilities. I keep returning to it and laugh out loud every time. Creativity is our first value, and for good reason.

The importance of living our lives through creativity is so important. Lessons should offer students and staff the option to demonstrate their creative flair; this will allow innovation and entrepreneurial skills to flourish. Staff at the West Grantham Academy St Hugh’s use a variety of methods to encourage this approach, including the use of different media and technology.

Responsibility for actions and for ourselves impacts significantly on our academy community.

Students and staff alike are encouraged to treat all others exactly as they would like to be treated themselves, and it makes for a wonderful atmosphere. This ‘family’ atmosphere is something that visitors often comment on when they come to look around; in a recent review, students shared their view that our “teachers are kind.”

Wisdom comes to those who seek to make the right choices, as they search for new knowledge inside and outside lessons. Sometimes this may mean that we learn from mistakes; this allows us to grow in strength and make better, wiser choices in the future.

Festival of Archaeology Thursday July 20th through Saturday July 22nd

Have you ever watched Time Team and thought, “that looks interesting; I wonder what they would find where I live?” Have you ever walked around your town and tried to imagine what it used to look like 100, 200, 300 years before? How people lived, worked, played? Well then, you might be interested to know that Spalding is actually listed in the Doomsday book, written in 1086. That is over 900 years of history beneath your feet and the story is being told at Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens. This year we are participating in the Festival of Archaeology with events, talks, displays and activities for the whole family, young and old, to learn more about your local landscape, archaeology and history. Please see what we have to offer Thursday, July 20th through Saturday, July 22nd. www.ayscoughfee.org

For a great day out for everyone in your family whatever the weather, why not visit Rand Farm Park during the school summer holidays? With so many activities in the ever-expanding outdoor adventure playground, including the famous Skyrider Challenge, Kangaroo Bouncers, Family Farmyard and Crazy Golf a great day out is almost guaranteed. Activities will be open all day, every day! If the weather’s good, Water Wars will be available for a splashing time to cool down and Archery will be open from 11am. There’s extra Sheep Racing too. So, in order to enjoy the best of the British Weather, why not bring a picnic and watch the children have hours of fun? The Ice Cream Kiosk will be open for cold drinks and ice creams so you don’t even have to find the energy to fetch these. If the weather isn’t kind, the animals also enjoy some fuss and there is always the Indoor Family Playbarn for all to enjoy. For an extra special visit on Sunday 27 August, Peppa Pig will be making appearances between 11am and 4pm so come along and join in the fun… Visit www.randfarmpark.com or tel: (01673) 858904.

The Yes Peas! campaign and the UK pea vining industry have launched a school meals mission and are appealing for schools up and down the UK to put peas on pupil’s plates during Great British Pea Week (10 – 16th July 2017). Run by the Yes Peas! campaign, Great British Pea Week aims to recognise the 700 British pea farmers who work tirelessly all year round to produce two billion portions of peas to feed the nation. The UK is the largest producer and consumer of frozen peas in Europe, with the average person in Britain eating nearly 9,000 peas per year. The School Meals Mission aims to highlight the importance of healthy school meals and the extraordinary nutritional power of the nation’s favourite family vegetable. Schools are being urged to pledge their support via social media and share images of their reci-peas during #GreatBritishPeaWeek. Schools nationwide will each receive a recipe e-book, full to the brim with healthy meal ideas, to inspire them to put peas back on pupil’s plates. Yes Peas! is also calling on families themselves to engage with the campaign by sending in their own pea-tastic creations! Share your images and activity between 10 – 16th July by posting to @YesPeas on Twitter or www.facebook.com/yespeas using the hashtag #GreatBritishPeaWeek.

Everyone at Skegness Natureland Seal Sanctuary would like to say a big thank you to the Girl Guides from the 2nd Skegness Guide Unit. Each year they raise money for a local charity. This year the girls decided that they would complete a sponsored walk from Burgh le Marsh to Skegness with the hope of raising enough money to adopt a seal at Natureland which is £75.00. Not only did they complete their walk but they managed to raise £254.35 which is a fantastic achievement. So, they have adopted Pixie the Harbour Seal, Popcorn the Penguin and have become Golden Friends of the Seal Hospital. The adoption money contributes to the up keep of the adopted animal, helping to feed and keep them in good condition. The Friends of the Seal Hospital money goes into a special account used only to pay for fish bills, vets fees, medication and anything required to assist us with the rescue, rehabilitation and release of the orphaned and injured seal pups we care for at Natureland.

SUN 13 AUGUST FAMILY FUN DAY  HARTSHOLME COUNTRY PARK Join the Park Rangers for the annual family open day where you will find a variety of activities for all the family. The event is run by the City of Lincoln Council and Hartsholme Country Park

When on average parents with school children spend £322 on back to school, it is essential to take the necessary precautions and label most (if not all) items. There is so much to think about; getting the uniforms ordered on time, taking that trip to the stores hunting for the perfect pair of shoes, spending precious time searching for a water bottle or lunch bag that your child will approve of…the list is endless!

3.

Consider growing children- Korbond hemming web is worth a special mention, to make the whole back to school process run smoothly. Found a pair of trousers that fit perfectly around the waist but are about 3 inches too long? Use this easy iron on solution for hemming, the turn ups you have created can be let down later on in the school term minimising the number of uniform items you have to purchase.

Available in most Tesco, Sainsbury’s stores or online on Amazon. For hints and tips and video tutorials visit Korbond’s Youtube: Korbonduk

Each parent has their own preferred way of labelling and with a wide range of solutions out there available in stores and online there is plenty of choice. Our top 3 recommendations for hasslefree uniform preparations: 1.

Labelling is a MUST! All parents want is a quick and durable solution. Korbond iron-on labels can be applied on any piece of uniform (including socks!) and they last numerous washes and even tumble drying! You would be surprised how quick the process is and how efficient these are. Use a Korbond laundry pen instead of a permanent marker pen for neater labelling. It’s a versatile pen, you can write on iron-on and stick on labels or even directly onto the garment’s tag.

2.

Save, save, save! How many superhero or princess bottles have you spotted the kids with? Add a Korbond dishwasher proof stick-on label to avoid mixing up bottles instead of having to purchase a new drinks bottle each week! School shoes can also work out to be quite expensive, so labelling them is very important. Korbond stick on shoe labels are handy and can sustain temperature and moisture throughout the year.

WED 26 JULY ILLYRIA THEATRE  THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES Illyria was the first company to tour children’s theatre on this scale in the open-air touring sector. Now in their 26th season they return with one of the most famous cautionary tales ever told. As in so many of Hans Christian Andersen’s stories, beneath the fancy clothes of the tale lies something more meaningful; human weaknesses are satirised mercilessly; and a capacity for loving is the highest value. There are larger-than-life characters, lots and lots to join in with – and an ending that will leave you helpless with laughter! [NB - there is NO nudity in the production. Although one of the actors may be a little chilly…] Recommended for children aged 5+ and their families. Gates 6.00pm. Performance 7.00pm.

Help them to stay safe whilst playing outside... As children finish school for the long summer break, now is the time to think about keeping them safe; by making sure they know how to use roads independently and where to play whilst out with friends. We can all help in getting them prepared for the summer by reinforcing some positive road safety messages: •

Never play on driveways, in active car parks, on the pavement or next to a road; accidents with cars can happen anywhere vehicles are moving. Remember to ‘Stop, Look, Listen and Think’, whenever you cross the road. Try not to cross near parked vehicles, particularly large ones. The driver may not be able to see you. Stay focussed when crossing

the road, and don’t allow anything to distract you when crossing the road. •

Remember to wear a correctly fitting cycle helmet when riding your bike. Whether you’re walking or cycling, fluorescent and bright or reflective clothing can help you to be seen during the day or night. Only cycle on the road if you have been fully trained in how to do so.

We interviewed our Junior Road Safety Officers at Church Lane Primary School in Sleaford Madeline Lilliman and Destiny Nkindu; to see if they could offer us some more useful road safety advice for the summer: Q. What organised activities have you got planned and what can you do to keep safe? A. Destiny: “I will be having a few days at the school’s Holiday

Club where we will play outside games like tig, skipping, trim trail with monkey bars and outdoor noughts and crosses. We will be kept safe from traffic by the fence around the field and playground. When we are playing football or netball in the park it will be well away from the roads” Q. What different activities will you hope to do whilst away on holiday? A. “Madeline:” Maybe cycling . We once hired bikes to cycle around an island which was fun. It is even more important to wear a helmet when you do this because of roads that you do not know, potholes and stones and to protect your head if you fall off ”. Destiny: “you also need knee and elbow pads if you are trying something like Segway riding or skateboarding”. Q. What do you need to think about if you go on holiday abroad?

Call 01522 805800

www.roadlincs.com

Destiny: “People drive on the right side of the road (in Spain), different to here and you have to be extra careful when looking out for traffic near you”. The Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO) Scheme runs in nearly 100 schools around Lincolnshire. As part of the scheme up to four Year 5 and 6 pupils are chosen to become advocates for road safety in their school. Throughout the academic year the JRSOs set up road safety initiatives and activities within the school to pass on vital road safety messages to all pupils. At the end of the academic year the JRSOs will receive a reward for their efforts. All primary schools in Lincolnshire can join the JRSO scheme as well as signing up for road safety lessons and initiatives. Bookings can be made by accessing Lincolnshire County Council’s website and searching for the Stay Safe Partnership.

Online Gaming A NEW study by Internet Matters has found that nearly half of parents whose children play games online have concerns over the amount of time they spend doing it…

The survey of 2000 parents with kids aged nine to 16, found 62% had children who regularly played games online 63% boys and 61% girls. But the survey also revealed that 41% were worried about the length of time their child spends attached to their gaming device. In fact, screen time emerged as such a major concern it ranked alongside grooming (44%) as one of the top worries for parents of online gamers. When it comes to online gaming, we need to recognise the positives, it is fun and sociable and it encourages teamwork and aids child development. It can be a constructive use of children’s time provided they are using age-appropriate games. It’s essential before you consider setting limits on your child’s gaming activities, that you understand what games they are playing and the summer holidays provides the perfect opportunity for you to sit down and find out

why they enjoy them so much. Explore the nature of the games by joining in and discover whether they are role-play games, sports or first-person shooter games. Have a conversation with them to find out how the games work and gently ask questions about who they play with online, who they meet and talk to, and if they’re using live chat or talking to other players via their headphones. Find out about the gaming sites and alert them in the ways in which they can report abusive chat and exclude anti-social players should they come across it. Check that the games they are using are age appropriate - like films all games have their own official age classification known as a PEGI rating, which appears on the box. Alternatively visit internetmatters.org to see if the game they are playing on the web has a limit. Getting to grip with what games they are playing will help you understand what they enjoy and

also help you understand if they are making their screen time count. Once you’re satisfied you’ve learnt about their habits and you’re still struggling to engage your child outside of their gaming world, it is perhaps time to address their screen time allowance. Have a sensible conversation and agree on an appropriate length of time together. Put in place a family agreement, to set some boundaries on device usage and make sure you don’t break it either. Childnet offer advice on how to devise a family agreement. Be aware of the time you spend on your phone, it will sets an example to your children. Help everyone in the family become aware of the amount of time they’re spending online by getting everyone to unplug. During the summer holidays establish ‘screen free’ zones at

home or perhaps if you’re going on an outing to make the most of the weather, if it’s safe to do so, make sure everyone leaves their phones at home. Encourage activity online outside of gaming during the holidays such as playing games together or creating an online scrapbook of holiday photographs and mementos to show your child how they can use the internet for varied activities. For further advice on how to manage your child’s screen time visit internetmatters.org/advice/ online-gaming

the

Butterfly Effect

It has been said that the single flap of a butterfly wing could cause a hurricane on the other side of the world. The point being that tiny actions can have huge consequences. Butterfly populations in the UK are currently in decline, but with a few small actions from us, we could have a huge effect on reversing that trend. Over the last 20 years there has been a decline in butterfly and moth numbers in the UK. A recent study compared 28 species over a 20-year period and the result showed that butterfly abundance in urban areas fell by 69%, whilst in rural areas their numbers fell by 45%. There are a number of possible reasons for this decline. In rural areas the effects of intensive agricultural methods, pesticides and set aside land being put back into production are being felt. In urban areas where over 4.5 million gardens have been paved over, the decline has been far worse due to habitat. This year the recent damp weather of the last few months has also caused problems for our fluttery friends. Butterflies are important in their role as pollinators for our plants. Around 1300 different types of plant are used by people around the world for food, medicine, drinks and fabric and 75% of those plants are pollinated by animals (including the butterfly). Not only do pollinators play a vital role in the production of our food and medicine, but because they pollinate around 90% of all plant species on the planet, they are responsible for encouraging vegetation growth, which in turn, provides shelter for animals and the basis for habitats and ecosystems. Plants use pollen to create new seeds to make new plants and insects like butterflies carry pollen between plants. To encourage butterflies and insects to visit them, plants provide nectar, a sugary substance that gives them food and energy. Instead of eating, butterflies feed by drinking nectar through a long, specially designed tube called a proboscis that acts like a straw. Butterflies can also taste through their feet and just by standing on a leaf, they can tell whether or not their young are able to feed on a plant and as we all know, some caterpillars can be very hungry indeed. Butterflies are also very quickly affected by changes in their environment, and changes in their numbers can suggest changes in their environment and the wider world. Despite this worrying fall in butterfly and moth numbers all is not lost! It is possible to provide plants and areas for butterflies and other insects even if you have a limited amount of

@PTLincolnshire

Butterfly spotting...

space. Even a window box can be helpful to an insect in need of nectar. There are a number initiatives currently running that aim to help encourage pollinators back into gardens and to provide new habitats for butterflies. The Plant A Pots For Pollinators scheme being run by Butterfly Conservation is a great way to get involved. A pot with nectar rich flowers can act as a pit stop for a busy butterfly on the go and will help them move between areas and habitats. Even a windowbox will be helpful if it is planted with the right plants. The Royal Horticultural Society is also launching their Green Your Grey initiative and they are giving ideas and pointers on how to transform your patios or paved driveways into havens for wildlife, whilst still being able to park your cars. Even small changes can have effects on the local environment. Just a few pots can provide food and shelter for wildlife, prevent problems such as flooding and even reduce stress levels in humans. These initiatives might be good for butterflies and insects, but they’re good for us humans too; looking at plants and wildlife is known to improve our general wellbeing. If you can’t provide a habitat for butterflies, you can still help by counting them. Learning about butterfly numbers in particular areas can help us to understand what is going on in the environment around us. The Big Butterfly Count is happening between 14th July and 6th August. All that is needed is 15 minutes, a bit of sun and somewhere to do a count and that could be the local park, a field, your school grounds, a window box or a pot for pollinators. 36,000 people took part in last year’s count and hopefully this year, even more will join in. Head to the Big Butterfly Count website, and you’ll be able to download an identification chart and find information on events happening near you. Primary Times Lincolnshire

There are a number of beautiful butterflies you might see over the summer months. With 59 species native to the UK there are a number of wonderful sights to be found.

Small Tortoiseshell

The Small Tortoiseshell is quite common. It can be found near nettles, so be careful not to get stung if you’re looking for them! Although common in the UK, the Small Tortoiseshell is the national butterfly of Denmark.

Red Admiral

Quite a familiar sight around the UK. Although there is a resident population here in the UK, many of the butterflies have actually migrated from central Europe.

Small White

This small, understated butterfly is very pretty, but can be considered to be something of a pest from allotment keepers. Also known as the Cabbage White, it’s larvae feed on cabbages.

Adonis Blue

The Adonis Blue can be found in warm sheltered spots. Although the male Adonis Blue really is very blue, the females are a chocolate brown colour.

Peacock

The Peacock butterfly has “eyes” on its wings to confuse predators. It is fairly common around the UK and can be found on buddleias towards the end of the summer.
