TAILING PIPELINES
Are Replaced before reaching Minimum Tickness
O
ffshore tailing pipelines stretch ing about 3.5 km on Senunu seabed were replaced in March. According to Aldian Reva Kurniado from PTNNT Project Development Department, the pipelines were replaced because their wall is approaching a minimum thickness, i.e. 37 mm, while the requirement provided in PTNNT Tailing Permit is 33 mm. "We replace them before reaching the minimum thickness to maintain PTNNT's compliance with the tailing permit as well as PTNNT's commitment to the environment," said he. The replacement was carried out by some 100 employees assisted by a tugboat and was finished in 12 days. "It was the shortest time we made. Last year,
it took 17 days," he continued. Aldian said the new pipe specifications are the same as the old pipes, i.e. of HDPE type (High Density Poly Ethylene) with 1000-mm diameter and 92 mm thick. The 3500-m pipelines were purchased directly from Thailand following a stringent bidding process. Indonesian companies producing HDPE still failed to meet the required standard. "HDPE pipe specifications required by PTNNT are very rarely produced in the world. It is bigger in diameter with thicker wall that only a few companies in the world have the capacity to produce it," said Aldian. The pipes were purchased in spools of 15-m length. At SWIS Sejorong, they were connected into one string of 240 m and

Batu Hijau were placed in a pie rack. The new HDPE pipes were then connected to the old onshore pipelines. The towing of the newly connected pipelines was then carried out by Anchor Handler Vessel (AHV) boat from the end of the offshore pipelines that the new pipelines were brought into the sea thus replacing the old pipelines. The old pipelines were towed out, cut every 240 m, and taken to Benete via the sea. At Benete, the pipelines were cut before being taken to Laydown 10. At the same time with the tugging at Benete, a team at SWIS carried out welding activity to the new 240 m string to tow into the sea.
This process was carried out repeatedly until all old pipelines of 3450 m were replaced. "The construction method of replacing tailing pipelines is called bottom tow out method. It is the best and the safest method for pipeline replacement," said Aldian. After all new pipelines were installed, hydrostatic test/leak test was conducted to check the condition of the new pipelines. The test was witnessed by third parties to ensure its independency. When no issue was found during the test, the pipelines were declared ready to use. The total costs spent for the replacement were about $15 million.

Regent Recognizes PTNNT CSR Programs Successful
T
he West Sumbawa Regent KH Zulkifli Muhadli admits that PTNNT CSR programs has been successful in developing and improving farmers' income in West Sumbawa particularly at Aik Kangkung village, Sekongkang. The regent expressed the recognition when opening the great harvest event and official opening of depo ORIVA rice mill at Aik Kangkung (12/4). "We have to be grateful that PTNNT through its community development programs has performed well. What we have done today is our common effort to iron out problems faced by the farmers, from capital, seedling, milling to sales issues," said Zulkifli. H Wagimin Sastra Hadi, Manager Social Responsibility Planning & Development PTNNT, put that the construction of the rice mile is one of the successes of the facilitation program by PTNNT through West Sumbawa Economic Development Foundation (YPESB). The program involves all relevant parties in rice cultivation and its support industry, from the upstream to the downstream sectors in order to increase the farmers' profit. "To date, no less than 218 farmers are fostered by YPESB on a land of 130 hectares, including 31 hectares of brown rice for Aik Kangkung village. In addition to developing the farmers, the depo is used to implement jajar legowo (SRI) based rice planting system and provide means of rice production, organic fertilizers and seedling loans," disclosed Wagimin. In addition to rice milling facility with a capacity of 1 - 1.5 tons per hour, the depo provides unhulled rice storage with a capacity of 100 tons and opens an outlet that sells all farmer means of rice production at reasonable prices. The program participants can buy the means of rice production with non-interest loan that may be paid out after the harvest through an agreed mechanism. PTNNT through YPESB collaborates with local unhulled rice buyer to buy dried unhulled rice at farmer level as per the price set forth by the government. Approximately 70 percent of the harvest is absorbed while the rest is used as the community food reserve.

FES Team Trained on Motor Vehicle Extrication
A
FES team trained to cut the vehicle door to extricate the trapped victim.
ccidents involving motor vehicle and being trapped in a vehicle is mentioned as the biggest epidemic in this modern era. With mechanization of industry particularly in mining industry, emergency response teams (Fire Emergency Services) are required to be able to perform controlled extrication of trapped victims. Specific techniques are required to extricate victims from trapped situation, particularly upon a prolonged time. Controlled victim extrication management requires Fire Emergency Service Extrication Team to work closely with the paramedic team to dismantle the vehicle and save the victims systematically. With regard to that, SHLP Department hosted Motor Vehicle Extrication Training for 60 members of PTNNT FES team. The training sessions were divided into four groups at three locations: Townsite, Port Site and Concentrator on 2 to 20 March 2013. "This training is a part of skills development for 23 new FES members and refresher for senior FES members to maintain their skill in emergency service," said Syafwanudin, Gensupv Fire Officer. The main purpose of the training is to
improve technical skills on advance vehicle rescue by extricating and taking a victim to critical treatment unit in the same or more stable condition than when the extrication started. This includes keeping the accident scene from getting worse. Michael Towler, an emergency coordinator at Newmont Jundee Australia, who has direct experience in handling motor vehicle accident rescue, delivered theories on use of equipment and scene security when the rescue team approaching the scene. He also taught about techniques to handle vehicle windshield, open locked door that cannot be opened due to the accident and extricate the victim from the vehicle. In addition, the team learned about basic knowledge on vehicle mechanisms in order that they understand the parts to be aware of the vehicle cutting to avoid hazard that may befall on the rescue team. To extricate a victim, the team used hydraulic Homatro-brand - a cutting device - allowing the team and the paramedics to perform the rescue easily. In the last session of the training, all teams were tested on an accident simulation with trapped victim inside the vehicle.

Safety Riding
Comprehend Safety Rules
T
he day has just started. The Maluk Police Office was still quiet. On its large yard two 6x8 meter tents and hundreds of orderly chairs were set. Only two people seem busy tidying banners and some other instruments. While the other one was busy setting up the sound system. A half an hour later, a convoy of hundreds of motorcycles suddenly appear and enter the police office yard all at once. They crowded around and parked their bikes disorderly. The silence instantly turned into noisy crowd due to the roaring bikes. Some of them sounded the horn for a long time along with very noisy jokes. "That is the situation when motorcycle taxis gather together. They always make jokes and talks that trigger laughters," said Junaidi, Senior Supervisor Community Relations. At a glance, in a big folk, they look like a biker gang, but in fact, they are not. Their presence on that day (15/4) was to attend the police chief's invitation to participate in safety riding training. "This activity is the second held. We held similar activity last year," Junaidi added. This training is a refresher on safe riding rules and practices on the highway. It was an effort to minimize the rate
of accidents that occurred on highways. "In cooperation with PTNNT, Maluk and Jereweh Police Offices routinely provide this kind of training at respective area. This cooperation is a form of PTNNT's awareness in safety. Therefore, we are very grateful for the support that PTNNT provides," said Dhimas, a Maluk Police Officer. After a 30-minute instruction, the committee divided participants into some groups of 15. While, other committee members set up arena by placing obstacle blocks made of thick plastic to test participants' riding skills and traffic compliance. "Ah‌if the obstacle is as simple as that, it is so easy!" one of the participants said. Underestimating? Yeah, almost most of them underestimated the obstacle. "It seems that the obstacle is easy," a participant whispered to another participant beside him. A few moments, each of the participants took turn and passed through the obstacle. At the same time, three Maluk office officers acted as referees. In addition to riding skills and traffic compliance, safety rule comprehension prior to riding became the main assessment point in this training. Suara Batu Hijau Edisi 32/2013

ukri, has shown an example. On 13 February, during weekly Tripper Conveyor Shutdown, the native of Jereweh that works as a Process Operator found out that contractor employees that were about to dismantle scaffolding failed to apply the company's safety standard. Of eight employees, only two of them have personal locks. As a tripper area operator, he reprimands personnel having no personal lock when working, although they only work at walk way as helpers. The alumnus of Alas Senior High School (1991) also reports it to his supervisor. "What he does has successfully minimized potential accidents and saved the contractor employees from possible safety standard violation. Due to this finding, Contractor User corrects contractor lock outs by providing the six employees with PADLOCKS and MELOCK, then resumed the task," said Superintendent Process Operations Burhan Manurung. Senior Manager Processing Ilyas Yamin also added, "During My Safety Journey (MSJ) program, there has been a commitment to look out each other, supervisors to subordinates, subordinates to supervisors, or between fellow employees. Sukri's action is consistent with the program," he stated. As a result of his action, the father of three kids born in 1973 receives a company reward in form of electronic gadget or tour package. "I have not decided which reward I will choose. But one thing for sure is that I have received the offer," said the fishing lover. To him, a reward is not his target. Being able to work at Newmont is a great and invaluable gift. "Newmont has given me so many things," he admitted. Indeed, since working at PTNNT (1999), he feels that he has a better life. "We are lucky that we have Newmont, unless, I might be still a laborer overseas," he added. Like any other men in his village, he once tried his luck to Malaysia in 1995-1996. He worked as a construction laborer in the neighbor country.

“Never Rely on Broscience People visit the fitness center for various reasons and motives, and this apparently makes everything complicated to the instructors and trainers. Ronald Lees, the Balanced Life fitness center instructor, who has devoted himself to fitness center for more than 20 years tells his experience to SBH readers.
I
see various kinds of strange to very good exercise methods. Frequent problems that many people face are they have friends that attend fitness center routinely and that invite them to go to the center and then they show some kind of exercises. Unfortunately, 85 percent of the exercises are incorrect. I call it 'broscience'. I remember when there was someone giving private exercise session to someone else where in fact he was not an instructor. I approached him and he looked like wanted to defend himself and kept on showing his 'broscience' energetically to his friend. He said: Hi, I'm Mike and I'm just helping my friend. I also give him a little knowledge on how to use equipment correctly. I asked him: Are you qualified to do that? He replied: Yes, of course, I am like an open book.
"Well, could you explain the importance of excessive load principle and periodization phases to your friend? The 'Book' is end and closed straightaway. I consider private exercise is like a people looking for a lawyer. When you need a good lawyer and he does not have any qualification and certification, will you follow his advices? I don't thing so! So, why people keep on listening to those who are also doing exercise together? I don't know why! Body weight loss When you want to lose weight, first you need to pay attention to your diet and the period you require to achieve it. Do not ask for magical potion or pills to change your body instantly. We do not have that. You just have to work hard. Hard enough that sometimes you feel like you really hate your trainer and then love him again the next day. That's the power of exercise. Remember these wise words, 'You can

You cannot defeat poor diet
Batu Hijau never out train a bad diet', meaning that when you have a bad diet you will look and feel bad. Normal weight loss is 2lb (1kg) per week. Muscle building When you need to build your muscles, then get prepared for a short and intensive exercise. The people spending one hour of muscle building exercise are often trained by a friend using 'broscience'. When you have >1 hour exercise session, the energy will come from your muscles, causing damage to them and your fat reserve to become inactive. Logically, you need to exercise and restore them. Do the 4 x 45minute session per week and allow 48hour intervals between muscles group exercises.
Fuel for muscle formation What I see from people's view on their diet is they will never tell the truth of what the eat, but when you ask them to eat certain food in certain time to achieve their goal. They will look at you without expression. If you want to build and respect your muscles, protein intake is very important. It is done by measuring your body, let's say your weight is 80kg. Multiple it with 1.5g and we get 120g. This figure is equal to the protein your body needs during the days you do not exercise for your muscle formation. Remember, chicken breast weighs 21g. Now you know where the sentence "You cannot defeat poor diet" comes from. On the exercise days, you have to increase your protein intake by 20% with protein milk before and after working out that I suggest you to drink during your exercise days. Normal muscle formation lost: 0.5lb to 1lb per week.

negative rumor, no matter how minor it is may create public opinions. When it is not responded immediately, negative rumors will have impacts on company's image. Therefore, in anticipation of an opinion crisis the company should be more sensitive, communicate in a selfconfident manner, and deliver its messages persuasively. Communication skills are important for all employees. "A six-second moment in a statement can be very decisive, whether it will bring positive or negative impacts," said Christovito Wiloto, the founder and owner of Power PR Institute Jakarta during a Media Handling training session held at the Community Hall, Townsite (1/5). Many kinds of mass media are available nowadays. Despite the variety, the topics raised often have similar point of views. "Although covered by different media
and journalists, most of the media cover similar topics," he said. Why? Because when giving a statement, resource persons are often not focused and fail to give emphasis of what s/he is trying to say. In addition, they do not use effective body language. Therefore, all employees (particularly those with a capacity to give statements) should be able to express themselves as company's representatives and ambassadors in front of the media (especially when the company is having unfavorable public image). Corporate Communication Department Manager Rubi Purnomo said communicating with the media is enjoyable. "Only, staffs need to join training on the subject matter before meeting the media and other stakeholders in order to help them communicate and become better spokespersons," said Rubi.

Upon Compliance, PTNNT May Withdraw 85pct of Reclamation Bond
H
aving been considered to have complied with government regulations in reclamation activities, PTNNT is allowed to withdraw 85 pct of reclamation bond (Jamrek) of 2012 paid to the government. The decision was made after the Directorate of Energy and Mineral Resources team completed its assessment last April. "The amount of reclamation bond is determined by the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal based on the company's proposal in its Five-Yearly Reclamation Budget," said Reclamation Senior Specialist Fitrahjaya Kurniawan. He explained that company paid reclamation bond for its reclamation activities. It is aimed at improving compliance in reclamation of the ex-pit as per the plan approved by authorized official. "In the event the company fails to meet successful reclamation criteria as shown
by the results of evaluation reports and/or field assessment, the minister, governor or regent/mayor based on their authority may assign 3rd parties to carry out reclamation using the reclamation bond," said Fitrah. In 2010 PTNNT withdrew 100 pct Jamrek (US$ 722.364); 2011 94 pct (US$ 570.670 from US$ 951.011), and in 2012 of 85 pct (US$ 5.124.766 from US$ 6.029.137). "In 2014 PTNNT sets its reclamation guarantee of US$ 7.260.862," he said.

BOOTCAMP

Sustainable Mining Bootcamp (Batch III):
Changing One's Mind
I
tend to be skeptical and even cynical when hearing about the word 'mining". I used to have assumption that mining would always mean a capitalist industry exploiting natural resources for the benefits of a few people, and then it irresponsibly abandons the totallydestroyed environment. Apparently, I built my assumption based on information I collected from mass media and internet. A subjective mindset I built without even looking at the actual condition of the mine area. I finally had a chance to prove that what I believed was wrong. The above statements are written by Farchan Noor, one of the 14 bloggers joining the Batu Hijau Bootcamp Batch III in his personal blog. Similar expressions also come from other participants such as Regy Kurniawan, Harris Maulana, Eko Budi and Muthia A. In his blog, Regy Kurniawan writes that mining activities will surely destroy the environment. Negative impacts will always follow any mining activities conducted everywhere. "However, environmental impacts can be minimized by the use of technology, and that's what we are seeing during this trip so that we can give responsible comments, not just giving criticisms based on data obtained from Wikipedia, Googling, or other people's opinions," he
said. For eight days (12-20/5) Farchan, Regy and the other Bootcamp participants saw the company's activities, such as mining, reclamation, safety and CSR directly. In addition to the dialogue with the management, they also have direct interaction with the community, diving in Benete bay waters, visiting Comdev projects, tourism areas such as the beaches around West Sumbawa Regency, teaching in schools, public health center and visiting Mantar village where Serdadu Kumbang film was made. "In fact, Newmont is very responsible for the environment where it operates," Regy writes in his blog. Bootcamp is a form of the company's commitment to operating transparently and is an education program for the public to provide direct information on mining operations as from rock excavation, processing, to mine closure preparation; and the life of the community around the Batu Hijau mine area, including potential tourism destination. Like the previous batch I & II bootcamp, this batch III participants come from various professionals, such as university students, travellers, photographers, freelance writers, businessman, environmental and CSR activits, and mine employees.

"Why would Newmont spend a lot of money on reclamation activities and environmental management efforts that exceed the regulation standards? What does it expect from investing million dollars with no direct economic benefits?"
S
Budianto, Sr. Spec Engineer Mine Compliance
uch questions were raised by media journalists during a visit to Batu Hijau East Dump reclamation area that they consideedr to have way exceeded the expecta tions of a mine reclamation. Previously, they had received brief explanation on mining process while enjoying the astonishing Batu Hijau mine they saw for the first time. Information on reclamation and environmental management were also provided to which they responded with surprise when hearing the amount of money the company had spent on reclamation and environmental management. A simple question and yet it is quite difficult to present a logical answer to satisfy the questioner. It seems to be pretty "unusual" what Batu Hijau project is doing in relation to its reclamation and environmental management amidst the condition where most of the mines in Indonesia, and the world put more prioritize on profits than the environment, or in a more sarcastic words, many companies only consider how to reap the highest profits with as little as possible capital, including minimizing the costs for reclamation and environmental management. Profits are gained by leaving damage and destruction. It is sad to see pits filled with murky water from irresponsible traditional mining activities in Bangka island. Not to mention damaged ex-coal mine areas in Kalimantan with poor reclamation without follow-up actions to restore the environment condition. Despite the fact that getting the greatest benefits with minimum cost (principles of economy) is taught in formal education, one thing is often neglected - the morality. Let's get back to the question. Firstly, reclamation and environmental management according to Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Regulation No. 18 of 2008 are activities aimed at restoring or managing disturbed areas from mining activities. Reclamation is an obligation for a mining company to conduct during or after its exploitation activities. In other words, reclamation is an integral part of a sound mine

Batu Hijau cycle. The ministerial regulation also explains the environmental management and monitoringis to be applied by the party responsible in an effort to manage and monitor the environment. Why does it have to exceed the standards set in government regulations? This has something to do with Newmont's vision and mission to be the most valued and respected mining company through industry leading performance, including environmental management aspects. Best achievement could not be realized just by doing usual or regular efforts, as they will result in regular performance as well. Regular activities are commonly conducted to meet obligations or avoid fine or penalty, while it needs extraordinary actions to be "the best", including in reclamation and environmental management. For example, the company spends approx. Rp1.3 billion to prepare 1 hectare of reclamation area that includes the cost for developing final stockpile slope, distribution of overburden and compaction excluding the cost for planting vegetationson the reclamation area. The final stockpile slope is developed with 2H:1V inclination, meaning that the slope inclination with a ratio of 2 horizontal and 1 vertical to ensure stockpile stability as per the geotechnical review. Once the final stockpile slope is developed, overburden of 2.75 m thickness is spread with compaction each of 0.5 m thickness. All the above are conducted to minimize potential failure and ensure reclamation success in stockpile area, both during initial and final phase of reclamation (post-mine reclamation), despite the fact that it is not arranged specifically thru a government regulation. With reclamation area size of more than 20 hectare per year, we can calculate the cost the company will spend to prepare its annual reclamation. Another example is the process of planting the vegetation on the reclamation area. The Forestry Minister Regulation No. 60 of 2009 states that the criterion for successful reclamation is 625 trees per hectare, while Batu Hijau has planted 1600 trees per hectare to ensure successful reclamation, although the company has to spend additional costs for plantataion and nursery. Then props the second question: Why is it investing million of dollars with no direct economic benefits? The answer would be: reputation. It is true that the money spent for reclamation and environmental management would not result in direct material or financial benefits. However, with sound reclamation and environmental management the company can develop and maintain its reputation, and it will thus maintain trust of other parties related to mining industry, such as the consumer. Currently, the consumers and stakeholders do not view mining products as a mere commodity, but they also consider the way to produce them. Are the mining activities conducted in compliance with occupational safety, social responsibility and environmental management? Are mining activities conducted by sacrificing the surrounding community and environment? Or in other words, are the minerals produced using sound mining process? A mine product can tell its tale. We do not want to have things obtained using incorrect or inhumane process. A movie "Blood Diamond" may just be an appropriate analogy where a diamond is mined by sacrificing the environment and people's lives. A diamond is produced by leaving long suffering to the people. How a diamond that should be admired for its beauty holds bloody history on Africa land. A beautiful diamond has turned into a bloody diamond. 'Green product' term has been introduced recently to represent a product, which is not Suara Batu Hijau Issue 32/2013

Batu Hijau gree literally, but which is produced using environmentally-friendly materials and process. As for Batu Hijau project, the 'green gold' term can be used to represent the mineral it produces (even though its major product is copper), considering that gold is a widely known mineral from generation to generation with its esthetic values. Green gold can mean the gold that is produced using environmentally-friendly process, not just meeting company's obligations to the state but to exceed the standard so that it can become a benchmark for any mining company in environmental management and being responsible for the next generations. With well maintained reputation thru beyond-standard efforts, the company will gain long-term benefits with recognized image as a company that applies green production process and therefore it will be easier for the stakeholders to accept company's presence. In addition, it will become employees' pride to have a chance to work for such a company. On the contrary, it would be such a burden for employees to work for an irresponsible company that only focuses its attention to financial benefits without considering environmental management. When many critics attacking the company saying it has caused environmental destruction, proud employees would hold their head up high to those critics saying with self-confidentce, "No, we are operating in a responsible manner." It is not easy to compete with competitors with similar business while having to conduct reclamation and environmental management. With the sale price and production cost that do not give additional margins, a green company has to pay its due to make it. Talking about having direct benefits would not be appropriate here. Only company's commitment from both management and employees can maintain sound mine operations with considerations being made to environmental aspects. With wellmaintained commitment, the company's vision and mission to be the most valued and respected mining company through industry leading performance, can be achieved.
When the gold turns into jewelry, the greener the gold the more beautiful it would be worn and remembered because a product does not only play a functional role, but it can tell its tale as well.
