Presdir's Remarks Occupational Safety System and Behavior Assalamu’alaikum wr.wb. Dear employees, Let me begin my remarks by extending my condolences for the death of our colleague Irawan due to a work accident on 15 March 2011 ago. We all feel the sorrow and loss caused by his departure. Let us therefore be committed that the accident involving Irawan will be the last fatal accident to occur at Batu Hijau. Consequently, we together must work harder, more actively and efficiently to ensure that we all work safely. Martiono Hadianto, Presdir PTNNT.
The said accident occurred only a few days after we announced our Timeout for Safety-a program where we will stop our work to discuss safety issues. In this Timeout for Safety, we are aware that our
safety performance in early 2011 was poor and way below the target. The first quarter saw 24 accidents, including a serious one. We had not finished our Timeout for Safety yet when the fatal accident occurred. We realize even more that the company's safety performance needs much improvement. We will make safety our main concern and first priority. Despite our production targets to achieve, we must ensure that we go to work healthy and return from work healthy as well. Therefore, in order to improve our safety performance we need more than just a good system. We also need to improve our behavior so that it is consistent with the existing system. Good behavior and system will surely improve our safety performance. Once again, I urge all of you to work carefully and follow the procedures. Supervisors need to go to the field more often to supervise their subordinates to ensure they are working safely. Let us work harder and more carefully to improve our safety performance. Let us ensure that we and our fellow workers work safely Wassalamu’alaikum wr wb.

Exploration & CSR Socialization on Elang exploration plan commenced
S
ocialization program on PTNNT's plan for exploration [resumption] at Elang block for the community, officials and stakeholders-especially those living in Sumbawa regency was kicked off last Thursday (24-25/3). A session was held by PTNNT's exploration team and Sumbawa District administration at the Ropang village hall of Ropang sub-district, Sumbawa. Several days earlier, socialization sessions were conducted in series at several villages around the exploration site.
When opening a Journalism Workshop for journalists in Bogor (25/3), PTNNT External Relations Senior Manager Arif Perdanakusumah said that exploration activities will commence at the end of quarter III of 2011 and are estimated to complete in 2016-2017. It is expected that Elang exploration will need bigger funding than that of Batu Hijau of only US$2 billion. “Elang needs not only exploration but community development as well. We
estimate exploration costs for this year alone are approx. US$8 million,” he said. Regarding the plant and port development to be built in Elang, Arif said the company was still considering the matter. "It has not been decided yet if the employees will stay there or in Sumbawa Besar," added Arif. Elang project is believed to have bigger resources than that of Batu Hijau project with 18 million ounces of gold and 18 billion pounds of copper reserves.

TNNT Senior Manager External Relations Arif Perdanakusumah handed over Sumbawa City subdistrict head office to Sumbawa Regent Drs H Jamaluddin Malik over on Friday (18/3). Located at Jl. Yos Sudarso, Sumbawa Besar,
the office was built by the company at IDR2.27 billion. In his speech, Arif said he was proud and relieved that the project could be completed on time. “Thanks to good cooperation between Sumbawa administration and all
parties,” he added. “Sumbawa and PTNNT also run joint projects in the construction of a sport center (GOR) and regency House of Reps. building,” he said. Sumbawa City sub-district head office project was kick-started on 20 August 2010. This two-storey building is constructed by a local contractor PT Baranusa Dana Tama from Sumbawa. The office of 465m2 has six staff rooms, one sub-district head room, one administration room, a mosque, a kitchen, a warehouse, four toilets and an auditorium. Earlier PTNNT built community health centers in Ropang and North Moyo, Sumbawa regional-owned company office and Seketeng market. Those projects are parts of the IDR352 billion of PTNNT's assistance to NTB Province, West Sumbawa and Sumbawa Regencies.

Operation & Production PTNNT follows international standards in concentrate assay
West Sumbawa team takes concentrate samples at Benete concentrate warehouse.
P
TNNT management deplores the West Sumbawa administration team's insistence to conduct concentrate
sampling at the Benete port facility (18/1) for further assaying at an unknown laboratories. “We deplore West Sumbawa regency's action, as it did not follow correct procedures,” said Arif Perdanakusumah, PTNNT's Senior Manager External Relations. He explained that PTNNT performs weighing, sampling and moisture determination (WSMD) in each concentrate shipment consistent with internationally recognized and commonly accepted business
practices. PTNNT also applies very strict internationally-recognized scientific methods in
concentrate sampling and assaying at Benete port facilities. “These methods are very important to obtaining representative and accurate samples of copper, gold and silver contents in specific concentrate shipment,” he added. Since West Sumbawa did not follow internationally recognized sampling procedures, Arif expected the concentrate sampling results will not be accurate and will only be used to discredit PTNNT. Management also deplores regency's allegation that PTNNT's sampling is not accurate. “We always operate transparently. As part of our transparency, we welcome any government office interested in learning about our concentrate assaying process. West Nusa Tenggara provincial administration has conducted independent concentrate assaying and their findings are similar to that of ours. West Sumbawa never conducts such assays,” said Arif.
Tissue culture to meet the need for seedlings
V
arious seedling techniques applied apparently have not been able to meet the need for seedlings for reclaiming cleared areas. Since July 2010, PTNNT's Environmental Dept. has made innovations with development of tissue culture techniques. Reclamation Monitoring specialist Bambang Supriadi said tissue culture techniques were developed to reproduce plants, especially the plants that are difficult to be reproduced using generative techniques. Tissue culture has some advantages over conventional techniques, such as cutting, seed, seedling, vegetative technique (lower and upper stem cutting) even the circle technique. “The seedlings resulted from tissue culture have identical characteristics to the mother plant and are reproducible in large quantity in a relatively short time with no need for a wide space. Besides, the quality and health of seedlings are well proven, are reproducible at any time (regardless of
4
Suara Batu Hijau Edisi XX/2011
the season), and have faster seedling growth,” he explained. Quality seedlings using tissue culture can be produced thru several phases, such as taking sprout explant of young tree of 0.51cm when planted. “After two months, the plant in the bottle will start to grow and can be propagated,” he said. Growth media is crucial in plant reproduction. The media can be made of elements required by the plant, such as macro and microelements contained in MS0 dissolved in water, added with sugar and jelly. The materials are then heated until they become gel and put into culture bottles for sterilization using an autoclave. The next process is rooting, which generally occurs for a 1-month period. The sprout with roots will
be moved to the plant pot and placed in a shelter. “Currently, production of seedlings using tissue culture method is generally conducted for hard plants, such as Gaharu (Aquilaria filaria) and Ipil (Instia bijuga). However, there may be possibility that productive plants, such as banana, can be reproduced using the method,” said Bambang.

Again, PTNNT hosts competency test
H
aving held the 1st event in 2009, PTNNT again hosts the competency test of the Professional Competency Certification IX for Indonesian mining professionals. Held from Friday to Sunday (18-20/2), the test was conducted by Professional Certification Agency (LSP) of the Association of Indonesian Mining Proffessionals (PERHAPI) in cooperation with the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP). As many as 29 participants from mine companies in Indonesia joined the certification, such as PT ANTAM, PT INCO, Leighton, KPC, PT Sapta Indra, PT ADARO, PTNNT. The assessors comprise senior professionals from mine companies all over Indonesia, while the consulants include officials from Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and universities. Rajulisman, the Head of Local Professional Competency Certification Committee, said it is an honour for PTNNT to be given another opportunity to host the event. PTNNT was appointed because the company met the requirements for a host, especially those related to facilities, such as mine, workshop and training and development. Competition of manpower in mining requires workers to have professionalism and integrity in the implementation of best practices. "With this certification, a mining professional will get recognition for his/ her skills and has high professional competitiveness in mining industry," said Rajulisman.
fter a two-month negotiation, the Collective Labor Agreement (CLA) between PTNNT and PUK SPKEP SPSI was finally signed by PTNNT President Director Martiono Hadianto and PUK SPKEP SPSI Chairman Muhamad Syahril at Grand Legi Hotel Mataram (11/11). The agreement will be effective for two years (2011-2012). “We need to maintain and improve our good industrial relations especially for the next two challenging years of company's operations. Hopefully, the new CLA will bring forward the company and bring prosperity to employees,” said Martiono. Martiono's statement was echoed by PTNNT General Manager David Lilley. “I thank all parties for their support in realizing the CLA and for the signing process. I hope that the CLA negotiation, which has taken a relatively long time and financial expenditure to complete, will serve as our guidelines to avoid any matter that may harm employees or the company,” he concluded. Meantime, Syahril disclosed that negotiation of the 7th CLA took the longest time to complete due to employees' high expectations and aspirations. NTB Manpower Office Head Ir. Mokhlis M.Si asserted that CLA serves as a law for both parties bound by the agreement so that nothing is more important than implementing its contents. “Any issue that occurs shall be communicated and settled in a good manner so that employees and company can have good relations and become productive,” he concluded.

Neighbor News PTNNT hands over cattle and goats worth over Rp1b to support BSS
P
TNNT welcomes the Land of Million Cows (BSS)-a program initiated by NTB government-by providing 1,490 cattles and 500 goats worth more than IDR1 billion. The livestock with average age of 1.5 years were handed over to the people of West Sumbawa Regency. In the first phase PTNNT, represented by Comdev Gensupv H. Nasrul Budiyanto, handed over 278 cattle (of the Baliness type) to Ir. Abbas, Head of West Sumbawa Marine, Fishery and Husbandry Office, at Pototano on Thursday (10/2). Abbas then handed over the cattle to the breeder groups. Each group consists of 10 people and gets seven cows. “We hope that the community can breed the cows and goats to increase their family's income,” said H Nasrul. He explained that the program, which was kick-started in 2010, is part of PTNNT's special Community Development and Empowerment projects worth US$38 million for NTB province, West Sumbawa and Sumbawa regencies. US$15.2 million or equal to IDR140.8 billion. “We are very grateful to PTNNT that has provided assistance for regional government's BSS program. We hope that the assistance in the form of seven cows for each group can be developed for the prosperity of the breeders,” said Ir Abbas. Some of the projects funded with PTNNT's Community Development and Empowerment special project fund for KSB include construction of clean water channels in
Seteluk sub-district, sound system equipment for Kemutar Telu Center (KTC) great mosque in Taliwang, road lighting and public facilities at KTC and an official car for West Sumbawa Regent. Meantime, undergoing and planned projects include construction of Benete Sekongkang road, repair of the access road to terminal and parking area at West Sumbawa Main Market and additional facilities at Seteluk market.
PTNNT supports W. Sumbawa to be food selfreliant region
T
he government's plan to make West Sumbawa regency a Food Self-reliant Region is not an exaggeration. It is not impossible to realize it as various agricultural and farmer empowerment programs as well as infrastructure improvement for the local people continue to be conducted in the region. It is achievable with cooperation between PTNNT and the regency administration.
The farm areas of 930 ha in Jereweh, for example, are promising to produce good yield. “With farmers' good farming skills and techniques the area will yield more than that targeted earlier,” said Jereweh Sub-district Head Ir. Ahmad Yani during a socialization of PTNNT's community development programs in Agriculture and Plantations Development of 2011 at Jereweh sub-district office (02/ 2).

In order to improve crop production in 2011, PTNNT will establish special partnership in the regency. “We plan that agricultural cooperation will be established at all levels,” said PTNNT's Senior Specialist Capacity Building Muhamad Atek Zambani before tens of farmers in Jereweh subdistrict. “Information sessions on agriculture not focused are only in the three sub-districts around the mine but will spread throughout the regency. Moreover, six units of compost house from the Director General of Agriculture and Irrigation are distributed for the area around the mine,” Zambani added. Meantime, Ir Alimin, Head of West Sumbawa Agriculture Communication Agency, said, “The farmers should make benefit of the partnership established by PTNNT, since the company is willing to share farming knowledge to farmers, apart from the infrastructure assistance it provides,” he said.
Neighbor News Comdev optimizes program achievement
P
TNNT's success in running its Company's Social Responsibility (CSR) is inseparable from the roles of Supervisors and Field Coordinators who work as partners (facilitators) to support maximum achievement of PTNNT's monthly, quarterly and annual community development programs. The above was discussed in the Field Support Management Enforcement Workshop held at the ex-Mess Hall of Benete, Thursday-Saturday (17-19/2). Attended by over ten of PTNNT partners' field managers (supervisors and coordinators), the workshop was run jointly by PTNNT's Community Development and NTB Transform Agency. PTNNT's Capacity Building General Supervisor H. Faozan Maulad said the workshop is one of the elements to support activity and emplowerment of NGO's supervisors as partners in the community's capacity building programs. “By identifying participants' strengths and weaknesses, suitable plan will be developed to empower them in supervision, facilitation as well as evaluation of the programs and write communicative reports,” said Faozan. Meantime, Witardi SE, Coordinator of Transform NTB, ensured that improved Supervisors' capacity in facilitating, supervising and coaching local partner NGOs will strengthen their capacity in providing effective support for continued community-run programs. “Field support management system will develop a base of sustainability to ensure achievement of objectives as well as to provide opportunities for program development, among others thru effective and efficient program input management, field activity management of gold quality, management of parties' collaboration, community as the main subject, and regular evaluation and monitoring system,” he concluded.

o help improve learning efficiency in Information and Communication Technology (TIK) in schools, PTNNT kick-started Computer Go To School (KMS) program in 2010. Thru the program PTNNT provides assistance for schools in the form of computers and establishment of Local Area Network (LAN). Last year, PTNNT provided 12 units of computer to SMAN 1 Taliwang, 15 units for SMAN 1 Jereweh, 15 units for SMAN 1 Sekongkang and 5 units for MA Al Furqon. This year, the company provides 10 units for SMAN 1 Brang Rea and 10 units for SMAN 1 Pototano. During the assistance handover in Brang Rea (7/ 3), PTNNT's Senior Manager External Relations Arif Perdanakusumah said PTNNT is committed to improving education in West Sumbawa, as proven in the various program run, such as teacher training, students learning guide and development of educational infrastructures within this area. “Internet-linked computers will be very helpful for teaching-learning process in school and improve students' knowledge, information and skills,” he said. Arif hopes that the teachers and students can use and maintain those computers as well as possible to get maximum benefits for a relatively long period. Abdul Hamid, MPd, secretary of West Sumbawa Education, Youth and Sports office, said the teaching and learning process in shools does not rely on classroom activity only, but information media is now an alternative to get knowledge. “One of them is thru the internet. With this KMS program, students are not only waiting for information from their teachers,” he concluded.

Use AC wisely
A
C is a very popular appliance to cool a room especially bedrooms or office rooms in order to take rest or work comfortably. However, people often do not have enough knowledge on AC, which results in un-optimum use of AC that cause to harm oneself and the environment. For example, people consider that the cooler the AC the better or more comfortable it is. In fact, cooler temperature may cause muscle stiffness and is prone to injury. Moreover, for those who have allergic rhinitis, cool temperature must be very irritating as it results in the respiratory tract producing much liquid that may cause asphyxiate, sneezing and watery eyes. Setting AC to a too low temperature results in increased electrical consumption and AC service life is shorter as it will work at its maximum capacity continuously to reach the set temperature. Then, at what temperature should an AC be set? The recommended temperature is around 24-25 Celsius degree. Those are the most ideal temperatures for human to work and rest optimally. The effects of high temperature to human body have been described above. While, if the temperature is too warm, it will cause us to have fatigue and increased emotion quickly. When the room temperature is considered ideal enough or the temperature of the thermometer shows 24-25 Celsius degrees, it is better to turn the AC off. Do not forget that AC may cause dehydration. Make sure to drink enough to prevent it. Recommended water consumption for those who work in an air-conditioned room is around 50-60cc/kg of body weight/day. For example, when someone is 50kg, he has to drink at least 2500cc/day. Set AC at an appropriate temperature in order that your body feels comfortable, you can work and rest optimally and save the power, the AC set is more durable and environment friendly.(c)KonsulSehat

ewmont is a proud recipient of General Electric's (GE) Re turn on Environment Award, which recognizes GE costumers who go above and beyond to minimize their environmental footprint. In December 2010, GE's Water and Process Technologies division completed a "Proof not Promises" scorecard on Newmont for our dust suppression work on haul roads at the Carlin North Area. Upon reviewing the scorecard, GE's Corporate Office recognized that Newmont has indeed been a leader in working to reduce its impact to the environment.
Of particular interest to GE has been our ongoing efforts to control and reduce fugitive dust. In 2008, we began trying out GE's Dus Treat (lignosulfonate) product on sections of our haul roads. Dus Treat is syrupy substance, made from natural ingredients, that bonds loose surface dirt and dust particles together into a crusty coating. The result is an asphalt-like surface that prevents these particles from becoming airborne as vehicles pass over them in dry, windy conditions. An application of Dus Treat can last for many weeks, eliminating the deed for repeated wetting of road surfaces by water truck each day. In addition to controlling dust, the product helps reduce water consumption, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, while helping improve road safety. For our successful implementation of Dus Treat, Newmont received GE's Ecomagination award 2008.

P
TNNT's overall safety performance for the past year dropped compared to a year earlier. “This is a challenge for all of us to make it better,” said PTNNT GMO David Lilley during the 2011 Occupational Health Safety (OHS) Month closing ceremony at the Soccer Field Townsite (9/2). Present in the event were Provincial Manpower and Transmigration Office Officials, employees, and contractors' representatives. David asserted that sound safety, environment and external relation programs are requisite to achieve successful business and are critical to ensuring development sustainability in areas around Batu Hijau project. Therefore, "No Incident Here Today" was taken as the theme in commemorating the OHS month. It is expected that the theme will become a new spirit to make safety a value that must be applied at workplace and home. “Our success in safety comes from each correct decision we make and the key is doing the best in every job we do,” David said. Leading the ceremony, Sutarto, Head of Manpower Supervision Section of the NTB Province Manpower Office, said that

In this year's OHS Month commemoration, PTNNT held various sports and entertainment activities, including campaigns on LPG use and antibiotic consumption method for housewives in Tongo, Sekongkang, Maluk and Benete, 5K run, healthy walk, fire suppression and first aid contest and bazaar, exhibition and Battle of the bands.

The events got merrier with the performance of the Battle of the Band finalists that was marked by the performance of a dangdut musical group from Sumbawa Besar. "Other than for entertainment purposes, the events become a friendship arena for the big family of PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara," said the organizing committee leader Syafwanudin. He added that various activities were held to celebrate the OHS Month from its opening on 12 January to the closing ceremony on 12 February 2011. Suara Batu Hijau Edisi XX/2011

The 9-Richter earthquake followed by tsunami in Japan has resulted in the land to shift up to 2.4 meters. “We found out that one of our GPS stations shifted (2.4 meters), the map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan also shows pattern changes at a wide location, similar to land mass changes, said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) on CNN's homepage. Initial findings of the Italy-based National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanolog (INGV) also shows that the Japan earthquake has caused a shift of the earth's poles of around 25 centimeters away.

Sumbawa Folklore Meke Serep Meeting in the hall (1)
I
n 1350 Gajah Mada, the very powerful Prime Minister of Majapahit kingdom, assisted by Empu Nala, united the archipelago from Sabang to Merauke to prove his dream pledge of Sumpah Palapa (Palapa Oath). The kingdom at the time was ruled by a wise king named Hayam Wuruk. At the time the people of Tana Samawa kingdom was under the reign of a majestic king, King Nuang Sasih whose dominance stretched from Empang to Jereweh. King Nuang Sasih surrendered to Majapahit kingdom and embraced Hinduism. The remains of the Hinduism still can be found today in the form of the way of daily life of Samawa community especially in rural or remote areas. For example, they provide offerings at big springs, stones, trees, etc. that are considered as sacred. King Nuang Sasih reigned Tana Samawa kingdom wisely and fairly. The people lived safely, peacefully, equitably and prosperously. Therefore, they loved King Nuang Sasih so much. On a bright and clear morning, the Sri Menganti hall in the Tana Samawa Kingdom palace was full of the kingdom warriors, commanders, ministers, officials and chief commanders. Apparently, there will be a meeting with the king. After a few moment, the wise and glorious King Nuang Sasih entered the hall. He was accompanied by the palace guards that all had divine powers. All attendants saluted solemnly to the king. Shortly, he started to speak. (to be continued)

Profile SYAMSUL KEPLI
Meet the rock analyst
U
pon completing his study at the Padjadjaran University of Bandung, in November 2002, Syamsul Kepli was not worried about having a job. It was because since he was a university student, the Sumbawa Besar-born had already had an opportunity at PTNNT, a copper mine company operating in West Sumbawa regency. “At the time, in 2001, I took a field work practice in PTNNT. I followed the exploration team to Rinti area, one of its Contract of Work Area concessions in Ropang, Sumbawa. My job was to identify the rock mineral metal contents in the area,” he said. In completing his study final assignment for about four months at PTNNT, Syamsul Kepli traced Rinti and Dodo exploration areas that had not been explored. He traced rivers from upstream to downstream while examining rocks. Along with over ten fellows, he carried out drilling and developed a geological map of valuable rocks to identify their capacity and dispersion area. “There was no land transportation and telecommunication equipment at the time. We were picked up and dropped off by helicopter and only received information and heard entertainment from radios. We sometimes had to walk for six hours a day,” said the first child of six siblings. At the time, due to such heavy duty and responsibility assigned to them, Syamsul used to feel hopeless and regret to have chosen Geology department. “I dreamt to be a soldier. However, since I had myopia since I was at the junior high school, I could not
make my dream come true,” he said. Notwithstanding, the hard work, sadness and happiness he experienced during the time in the jungle were not useless. His loyalty and skills in applying the knowledge he got during his university study earned him special credits from his fieldwork adviser. Therefore, as soon as he completed his study, he was directly nominated as a company employee. “Alhamdulillah (Thanks God), I did not wait for a long time. There was a vacancy open by chance and I then applied for it. My former adviser during the fieldwork is now my direct supervisor,” said the soccer hobbyist that currently lives at Lorong Jati, Townsite with his wife, a Primary School Teacher in the National School that he married one year ago in Bangkalan Madura.
In the early period of his employment at PTNNT, December 2002, he was appointed Geologist Mine Development. Then, he held Exploration Geologist position in 2003-2006 and returned to Geologist Mine Development. In 2008-2010 he was appointed Sr. Geologist Mine Development and currently holds the role of Sr. Geologist Production. “What impressed me most is that the maps that we developed during the exploration at Batu Hijau are in fact not much different from the real condition. The rock quality and quantity estimation variance is only about 10 percent, whereas the tolerance range is about 15 percent,” said the winner of the geologist chess competition during the 56th RI Independence Anniversary celebration at Rinti, Sumbawa exploration area.

Focus Rantung, West Sumbawa's Bau Nyale central location
T
he day was still dark, but the people were crowding Rantung beach, Sekongkang sub-district, West Sumbawa regency. They came from many areas using various transports. Some of them even went there on foot. Soon came the dawn. Drizzle dropped and the wind blew gently. They were the signs that the annual Bau Nyale (sea worm catching) party would soon start. The people who equipped themselves with nets, buckets and similar tools then went into to the sea, making noisy and loud cheers expressing excitement and enthusiasm. At the same time, thousands and even millions of sea worms appeared from rock holes to the seawater level. Hurray...hurray....., nyale......huuuuuu.........great!
