Elang exploration to resume soon in the wake of MoU signing Central govt. acquired 7 pct divested shares

Sumbawa Regency government and PTNNT signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to resume the exploration project at PTNNT's contract of work area in Sumbawa Regency. The MoU was signed by Sumbawa Regent Drs H Jamaluddin Malik and PTNNT General Manager Operations David Lilley in Sumbawa Besar (11/5).

From Presdir Some good news Assalamu’alaikum wr.wb. Rekan-rekan karyawan, Dear Employees, During the last few months, we have faced so many challenges in the form of demonstrations related to share divestiture that quite drained our energy and thought. However, there are some pretty good stories among our thought tension. The stories are related to a number of key objectives of our business plan.

Martiono Hadianto, PTNNT President Director.

Firstly, we received a 5-year permit extension for our deep sea tailings placement process approved and signed by the Minister of the Environment. This permit does contain some criteria and parameters that are different to the 2007 permit, but we are confident with this permit we can continue to operate our business at optimum levels. Secondly, on Friday (6/5), there was a formal signing between the Indonesian Government, represented by PIP (Investment Agency) and PTNNT, for the final 7% shares required to be divested as per our CoW. This means that PTNNT has now completed all of its obligations to the Indonesian Government related to divesture.

And thirdly, PTNNT and the Sumbawa regency government signed the MoU for resumption of exploration activity at Elang and other locations on Wednesday (11/5). Following the signing, we will resume exploration activity and work on a schedule to have drilling underway at Elang in Q3 this year. All of these great outcomes are the direct result of your hard work, dedication, and persistent effort. The External Relations, EnvSuara Batu Hijau accepts any stories, articles, photos and cartoons from employees. Editors have the right to edit articles contributedironment, Finance, Tax and Legal departments all had key roles to play, however every employee or contractor who contributed to our industry leading environmental performance over the past 4 years has also played a key role, building the foundation of operational excellence that the Environmental Ministry and others recognize. We thank each of you for that. However, big challenges are awaiting us ahead. But, be sure that we will continue to operate Batu Hijau according to all prevailing Indonesian laws and regulations, with our focus on safe and efficient production, environmental excellence and social responsibility. We intend to grow our business through active and aggressive progression of the mill expansion and the Elang opportunity. Wassalamu’alaikum wr wb.

Arif Perdanakusumah, PTNNT Senior Manager External Relations handed over a key symbol to H Sukiman Azmy, East Lombok Regent witnessed by Ir Hj Siti Rohmi, East Lombok House of Reps. Speaker and related office staff. Insert: PTNNT vehicle assistance

T

he total population of East Lombok re gency is equal to that of the six regen cies and cities on the island of Sumbawa. Therefore, social issues in the region are relatively more complex than those in other regions in NTB. Some of the main issues that the region is facing as described by the Regent H Sukiman Azmy are limited facilities and road infra-

structure, electrical power and clean water network. In view of this, PTNNT recently provided assistance in the form of vehicles, including 2 clean water trucks, 3 garbage trucks, 1 mini bus and 4 motorcycles totaling of Rp1.8 billion. “On behalf of East Lombok community, we thank PTNNT and hope that such assistance

will not stop here. We actually requested a fire truck, but it is so expensive,” the Regent Sukiman said following the signing the Assistance Handover Official Report at his office, Monday (25/4). The vehicles were directly handed over to related Regional Government Work Units. PTNNT's Manager Senior External Relations Arif Perdanakusumah thanked the East Lombok government and people for their continued support and cooperation to date. “The assistance is inseparable from the company's social responsibility programs. We hope that the vehicles will be used optimally to improve public services in the regency,” he stated. PTNNT has run its operations for over 11 years. During the period, the company and the local government have maintained good relationship through various social responsibility programs. The company also partners with the regency government in operating the company's dedicated jetty for the boat that transports its employees to the project area. “Hopefully, we will continue to have good relationship with the East Lombok government and community in the future,” Arif concluded.

Pancor Kopong receives clean water facility assistance

T

he people of Pancor Kopong Barat Hamlet, Masbagik Utara Baru Village,East Lombok can now breathe freely. This was because they now can consume the clean water that they used to see running way below their kampong. PTNNT, using CSR fund, constructed a pipeline, hydrant pipe and a reservoir that worth Rp100 million. The clean water facility can supply 1.5 liters per second to 215 families of the hamlet that is located about 500 meters from the spring. Ali Sadikin, PTNNT Community Development Special Project Manager officially handed over the assistance to Khairul Ihsan AMd, Masbagik Utara Baru Village Chief (8/ 4). The handover marked the completion of the assistance construction work. Ali expected that the people should not only be proud of the clean water facility construction, but they should also maintain and take care of it such that it can be

serviceable for a long time and provide benefits for the community as much as possible. Meanwhile, Khairun Ihsan, on behalf of Pancor Kopong community, thanked PTNNT for its awareness. “The clean water facility is really a surprise to us. The clean water project, without PTNNT's support, would not be possible to reach our village,” he said in front of his people.

He described that staying close to a spring does not always mean having abundant water. The proof is that Pancor Kopong Barat Hamlet for years could only see other regions enjoy the freshness of the spring coming from their hamlet. “We can understand that as the location of Pancor Kopong Hamlet is higher than the spring that is in an adjacent location,” said Marzuki, a community figure of the hamlet.

good cooperation among Sumbawa government officials and all parties such that various projects developed from PTNNT's CSR fund could be carried out as per plan. He stated that in the use of the empowerment fund, Sumbawa regency reached a target progress that exceeded West Sumbawa Regency and NTB Province. As a result, the allocation of CSR fund that reached Rp75 billion was completed by the end of 2011. "God willing, the allocation of whole fund can be completed by the end of 2011 or early 2012," said Arif. Meanwhile, the Regent Drs H Jamaluddin Malik expressed his happiness as a more appropriate and authoritative building of the House of Reps. can be realized soon . "The new building can be a catalyst for the legislative body in providing the best service to the community," he stated. According to the Regent, the old House of Reps. building has for the last 10 years no longer been appropriate for the people's representatives to support regional government performance and public services. "On behalf of the government, we thank PTNNT for its participation in the regional development," said Jamaluddin Malik. The Rp28 billion building will be built with a reinforced concrete construction. The building will be 5,074 square meters on a 18,803 square meter land. Beru village harvests 8.16 tons of rice per hectare

A

cheerful atmosphere was seen on the farmers of Beru village, Jereweh Sub-District, West Sumbawa Regency. This is because their rice farms where the planted rice by adopting the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) produced in average of 8.16 tons of rice per hectare. The harvest was much higher than the yield from conventional farming system which is in average of 2.25-5.5 tons per hectare. "We shall be grateful to God about this, because while in some regions many people failed in their harvest due to natural disaster, we even get a great deal of yield," said Drs. Mala Rahman, West Sumbawa Vice Regent when attending the great harvest of SRI rice in Beru Village, Jereweh Sub-district (22/3). In order to support its self-sufficient food program, the regency government would provide prime seed direct assistance (BLBU) to a number of farmer groups and would maintain supporting facilities for the successful productivity of farmers in Jereweh Sub-district. Jereweh Sub-district Head Ahmad Yani, SH MM mentioned that the farmers' success in applying the SRI program was inseparable from the guidance that PTNNT provided in cooperation with the regional government. "We expect that the production increase can improve the farmers' income," he stated. Jereweh Sub-district currently has 900 hectares of rice field. Around 500 people relied on farming. About 120 of them are under PTNNT guidance and apply SRI system on 49.3 hectares of rice

field. PTNNT Capacity Building Supervisor Abdul Wahid stated that the SRI system has been proven to increase the farmers' rice production successfully so that it is advisable that the farmers apply it. "When the harvest yield increases, farmers' income will increase too. With increased income, prosperity will be realized. That is the objective of the PTNNT community development program," closed Wahid.ď ľ

company's production plan. Thus, to realize smooth activities and achieve targeted production rate, various antici-

pation projects are to be carried out ahead of the wet season. Superintendent Mine Development Raymond Boyska explained that the activities carried during the dry season include tree cutting, land clean-up, land hauling and filling. In addition, reclamation has been carried out on undisturbed land, drainage has been constructed to divert water runoff from the forest to Sejorong and Tongoloka rivers and maintenance of sediment ponds to keep the pond able to contain the mine acid water. “The land clearing during the dry season will define the amount of material to mine during the planned mining phase. Therefore dry season becomes an integrated part with mining activities at Batu Hijau where the work process is made by involving all groups at the Mine Department,” said Raymond. 

K3 News Lower back pain can be prevented

L

ower back pain is the most common complaint received by doctors. The cause of most back pain cases is difficult to figure out while it takes an expensive cost to cure it.

DR. dr. Luthfi Gatam, SpOT. FICS., an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spinal surgery disclosed it during a lower back pain session in the lower back pain campaign 2011 held at the Community Hall, Townsite (24-25/3). He asserted that lower back pain might develop due to several conditions, such as muscle strain, back injury, overuse (muscle tension), muscle disorder, root nerve (nerves fiber) stress, poor body position and so forth. “Pregnant women, construction workers, smokers and those who carry out repeated lifting work are highly prone to lower back pain risk. Therefore, prevention is important. Keep your body in healthy weight range and maintain back muscle strength and elasticity to help in preventing the problem to your back,” said Luthfi. He continued that proper body position and correct techniques when lifting heavy load may also prevent lower back pain. Good body position can keep the body parallel correctly and reduce additional stress to musculoskeletal (muscle and bone) so that bones, joints and ligaments can function as expected. “Bearing in mind that the high risk of lower back pain to Newmont employees can affect their performance and the company's productivity as well, the campaign will continue for high risk working groups such as mechanics, operators, field workers and even office workers,” said Sumarno, Senior Supv. Industrial Hygiene PTNNT.

Seven symptoms of lower back pain If your answer is yes to any of the questions below, you have to see a back bone specialist or company's doctor. 1. Has the lower back pain spread to your legs? If the pain remains and is painful, it is a sign that something is pressing the nerve that moves from your lower back to your legs. 2. Does the pain on your legs get worse when you raise your legs to chest or bend them? If yes, there might be nerve irritation. 3. Have you suffered serious lower back pan after falling recently?
