The present volume stems from a conference organized on the island of La Palma in April 2007. It was an unusual conference bringing together participants from many areas of endeavour, whose common purpose was to talk about the issue of Starlight heritage, or dark sky heritage. The Starlight initiative and the final Declaration adopted at the end of the Conference represent a call to common sense and reason, for an alliance of intelligence; why not be more reasonable and sparing as regards our lighting, not to darken the world but quite the opposite: to light up the stars of our night sky.
