from the

executive director Dear Friends, I am so glad you have joined us for the 2019-2020 season of Newman Center Presents. This is my fourth season at the Newman Center and I could not be more excited about the engaging and thought-provoking programming we’re bringing to you this year. Presenting artistically excellent performances is always a priority for the Newman Center, but if this season were to have a theme, it would be storytelling. Throughout the season, you will hear powerful stories told by diverse voices. Stories will explore our American history, current issues facing our society and global perspectives, all amplified through the power of the performing arts. Through dance, music, science, and theater, this season of Newman Center Presents will challenge, enlighten, and inspire. We believe that the Newman Center is one of Denver’s best spaces for students, neighbors, and friends to experience intersectional diversity, communal artistry, and transformative learning. That’s why our programming brings a wide variety of artists and speakers to you. We know that you’re curious, adventurous, and seeking new experiences every day. We are so grateful you are here, celebrating your passion for the performing arts with us. Welcome to the Newman Center, thank you for joining us and thank you for supporting arts and culture in Denver.

from the

chancellor Welcome! The Robert and Judi Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Denver is a vital source of culture, inspiration, and expression. Through the many events held at the Newman Center, the Denver community comes together for moving and transformative experiences—experiences that you are helping make possible through your attendance. Thank you. This season, the Newman Center will present musicians, dancers, artists, filmmakers, explorers, scientists, and more. In the second season of our partnership with National Geographic Live, the Newman Center will collaborate with DU’s own Lamont Symphony Orchestra for a presentation of the award-winning documentary, Jane, which tells the incredible life story of anthropologist and foremost expert on chimpanzees, Jane Goodall. The Newman Center has also partnered with the Denver Biennial of the Americas Festival to present Grammy-winning, genre-defying band Ozomatli, as well as their family-friendly performance, OzoKidz. In addition, we will host several outstanding musicians, dance troupes, comedic performances, and even acrobats! It’s going to be a truly phenomenal season. The University of Denver is proud of the Newman Center. Through these performances, our campus is made even more accessible to the entire Denver community. The artists and performances on Newman’s stages share with the audience their gifts, their big ideas, their voice, and perspectives. This is powerful. It’s important. Moreover, the Newman Center, like all of DU, is dedicated to supporting the public good through partnerships with Denver Public Schools to bring the arts to students across the city. Thank you for coming today, and I hope you find many events to attend this season. Enjoy the show. Sincerely,

Jeremy Haefner Chancellor, University of Denver

The Newman Center hosts nearly 500 events each year with 120,000 people in attendance. At the core of Newman Center’s programming is Newman Center Presents, a multidisciplinary professional performing arts series, showcasing renowned artists from around the world. Newman Center is home to DU’s Lamont School of Music and Department of Theatre and also hosts community and performing arts organizations such as The Denver Post’s Pen and Podium Series and the Friends of Chamber Music series. The Newman Center is also a regular venue for performances by some of Colorado's premier arts organizations, including Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Denver Brass, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and others. The Newman Center enriches Colorado audiences at the University of Denver through the performing arts by blurring the lines between campus and community, developing key community partnerships, and creating programming for families— introducing new generations to the arts.

Photo and video recording are strictly prohibited.

Every year, 14 senior Yale students are selected to be in the Whiffenpoofs, the world’s oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group. Founded in 1909, the “Whiffs” began as a senior quartet that met for weekly concerts Mory’s Temple Bar, the famous Yale tavern. Today, the group has become one of Yale’s most celebrated traditions. Singing a mixture of old Yale tunes, jazz standards, and other hits from across the decades, the Whiffenpoofs perform more than 200 concerts across six continents each year. Their characteristic white tie and tails, paired with their enthusiasm and humor, have become iconic for audiences all around the United States and the globe. Recent Whiffenpoof performance venues have included Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the White House, the Rose Bowl, and Lincoln Center. The Whiffenpoofs have also reached a television audience more than 175 million in appearances on NBC’s The Sing Off, The West Wing, The Today Show, 60 Minutes, Gilmore Girls, Jeopardy!, Saturday Night Live, and Glee, and have performed for multiple sitting Presidents of the United States. Nonetheless, the Whiffenpoofs always feel most at home at Yale on their perennial Monday night engagement at Mory’s, where they close each night with the historic Whiffenpoof Song (which has since been covered by artists like Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, and Rudy Vallee).

robert and judi newman These avid philanthropists, and winners of the 2014 Colorado Business Committee for the Arts’ John Madden Jr. Leadership Award, smile when they remember becoming involved in the campaign to create an outstanding center for the performing arts at the University of Denver. Daniel L. Ritchie, then chancellor, invited Judi to head the effort when the Center was only a dream. Later, the Center was named in the couple’s honor. The couple’s passion for performing arts and education harmoniously intersected with the Newman Center, which is home to exceptional performance venues and DU’s Lamont School of Music and Department of Theatre. Former DU Chancellor Dan Ritchie has often said that “love is the principal ingredient in any successful building,” says Judi. “The Newman Center, as well as the University’s many other buildings, show just how true that is.” The Newmans appreciated the masterful collaboration between Ritchie and DU Architect Emeritus Cabell Childress, and the expertise of Joseph Docksey, then director of the Lamont School, and William Temple Newman Center Presents 2019-2020 Season

Davis, then chairman of DU’s Department of Theatre. They delight in the superb array of Newman Center Presents’ programs presented over the years by Executive Directors Stephen Seifert and Kendra Whitlock Ingram. Prominent in Denver’s cultural community, the Newmans serve on many boards. Among those, Bob is a Trustee of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and the Denver Art Museum. He is a former member of DU’s Board of Trustees and currently serves on the Daniels School executive Advisory Council. Judi is a Trustee of the Denver Botanic Gardens and sits on the Visiting Committee for the Frost School of Music and the Board of Trustees of the University of Miami. She is also a former Trustee and Treasurer of the Colorado Symphony Association. “Each year brings more recognition to this venue and its world-class programs,” says Bob. “Judi and I are delighted to be part of this University of Denver community.” newmancenter.du.edu
