More details will be published in our Members’ Newsletter in the coming weeks. A highlight of the Queen’s Cup tournament in any year is the incredible pony power and Jamie Hayward has written a brilliant tribute to the real stars of the show in this magazine. Siri Evjemo-Nysveen’s Vikings Polo Team was one of the high-goal teams that regularly competes in the Cartier Queen’s Cup. However a highlight for Siri last year was, without doubt, winning the Polo Pony Championship at the Royal Windsor Horse Show with Riba Roja, whom Siri had made herself. We feature this glorious show, and the Vikings team’s success, at the UK’s largest outdoor horse show, in this edition of TenGoal. John Collins and his Talacrest brand of classic Ferraris also delivered an outstanding performance last summer – hosting the first edition of the Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup. So we go behind the scenes at John’s Berkshire HQ to find out more about his remarkable story. Despite all the difficulties we encountered last year due to the pandemic it has been
wonderful to look back in the pages of TenGoal and see how many social events we were able to host in the latter months of last season. The Chairman’s Awards Night was particularly memorable and I am indebted to Nick Day at the Crown Estate for giving permission for the fireworks. It created a spectacular finale and gave a much needed sparkle to finish the season. We launch this season with a Members’ Welcome Reception on Saturday 9 April. I do hope that you can join me for a glass of Champagne Laurent-Perrier to toast our 67th season. This is also the date for all Social Members to come and collect their 2022 badges and the annual Yearbook. So here’s to a great season.

s I write this Foreword for the spring edition of TenGoal I am looking at the 2022 fixtures list. I am delighted to say that we are in for a busy season of polo and hospitality at Smith’s Lawn. After two years of uncertainty and confusion we can look forward to a wonderful summer of great sport on our fabulous grounds. The Club has now started work on the penultimate phase of its grounds project, the redevelopment of Grounds Six and Eight. This will bring these two grounds up to international standard and introduce two more high-goal grounds at the Club. Careful match scheduling will ensure that the works will not impact on our season and enable us to host more top-level games at Smith’s Lawn in the future. The Cartier Queen’s Cup is particularly important this year as it will be played in HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Year. The actual Jubilee Weekend (4-5 June) is also the date for the 22-goal tournament’s quarter-finals and so we are planning to create something special for such a prestigious anniversary.

THE CORONATION CUP COMES HOME
The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) has confirmed that the international Coronation Cup match will be played in 2022 after an absence of two years.
D
avid Wood, Chief Executive of the HPA, confirmed earlier this month that the England Polo Team will play Uruguay at Guards Polo Club on Saturday 23 June 2022. This will be the first time that Uruguay has played for this historic trophy which dates back to 1911. However the visiting team will be captained by a familiar face to British polo fans as high-goal star David “Pelon” Stirling will wear the captain’s armband on this prestigious day. The game is due to be played at 24 – 26 goals and the England team will be led by experienced, seven-goal international James Harper for the first time. “After two difficult years for the polo community it is wonderful that we can once again host this showcase event for the England polo team,” said Nick Wiles,

Chairman of the HPA. “I am indebted to the Uruguayan Polo Association and His Excellency César Rodríguez Zavalla, the Uruguayan Ambassador, for their support of this day. It is also fitting that the event will return to its long-standing home of Guards Polo Club, ensuring a great venue and grounds for these leading players.” HE César Rodríguez Zavalla added: “It is a great honour for Uruguay to play for this historic trophy. Having just qualified for the 14 Goal World Championships, due to be played in America in October, this is a very exciting year for my country.” The Chairman of Guards Polo Club, Brian Stein, is equally delighted that this iconic trophy is returning to Smith’s Lawn. “The history of Guards Polo Club is so intertwined with the Coronation Cup that it is wonderful that we can host this magnificent trophy once again. We look forward to delivering another outstanding day of international polo on Saturday 23 July.” The plan for this international day of sport is to feature a morning game followed by the Coronation Cup match at 3.30pm. GROUNDS PLAN EXPANDS AT SMITH’S LAWN Guards Polo Club has started work on the next phase of its innovative grounds’ development plan.
G
uards Polo Club has started work on the next phase of its innovative g ro u n d s ’ d e ve l o p m e n t p l a n . Following on from the success of the redevelopment of The Princes’ Ground in 2019, plus some addition drainage works last autumn, the Board has given permission for the Club to focus on improving grounds six and eight. In fact, at the time of writing, the diggers are already in place on ground six. This particular project is stage four of Guards Polo Club’s Vision for the Future plan which was first published in 2005 and began with the creation of the new Clubhouse. The current works, managed by Chief Operating Officer James Neighbour and Director of Polo Antony Fanshawe, aims to create two further, full-size, laser-levelled grounds at the far corner of Smith’s Lawn. The Grounds Committee expects these works to be completed by the end of this year with a view to gently introducing the new grounds into the Club’s fixtures list from the 2023 season onwards. Antony Fanshawe, a committed advocate of the Club’s extensive grounds plan, is delighted that this next stage is already underway. “The Princes’ Ground has been successfully introduced into our grounds roster, generating plenty of positive comments from the players last season and so I am pleased that we are pushing ahead

with the penultimate phase of our grounds plan. At the risk of sounding like a broken record modern polo is played on flat, grass fields and grounds six and eight could never have been called flat! So to remain at the forefront of our sport it is essential that we can offer top-quality, well drained grounds all season.

It was such a bonus that everyone could stay. When you think Highlands, you think wild country; historic halls, but also a bit cold and a bit wet. But Achnagairn is a castle with no compromises. No draughty halls, no stuffy

When you tell people you’re getting married in a Scottish castle, simply everybody comes! For our long weekend there, we went all in on the Scottish feel. CLUB CLOSES BEST SEASON YET WITH A BANG A surprise fireworks display was an unexpected highlight of the Chairman’s Awards Dinner in the Clubhouse on the penultimate night of the season.

uests were asked to head outside halfway through the dinner and were rewarded with a spectacular fireworks display. With Ebe Sievwright choreographing some amazing music this really was a spellbinding show and a brilliant way to bring a stand-out season to a close. Following dessert, Guards Polo Club’s Chairman Brian Stein reflected on the Club’s incredible season which had seen some 545 games played in 2021. This figure included 20

all the matches for the Club’s new 22-goal tournament, the Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup. Talacrest sponsor John Collins was at the dinner where he generously presented the Talacrest Young Player of the Year Award to Alfie Hyde. Alfie receives a year’s playing membership of Guards Polo Club in 2022 as his prize and joins an impressive roster of Talacrest Young Players including Jack Hyde (no relation), Tommy Beresford, Tom Brodie and Will Harper.

Most Improved Player: Max Sponer. This young player has played 45 games at the Club this season, registering a 49%-win ratio. These victories include the Social Cup in which Max was also named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and the Copenhagen Cup with his school, Wellington College. He highlighted this winning form less than 24 hours later when playing for Shoreline and receiving the MVP prize in the President’s Trophy final. Best Handicapped Player: Emanuel Arber who has played 20 games at eight-, 10- and 12-goal level. Wins included the Hildon Archie David Cup where he was also named the Most Valuable Player. could enjoy on its own at any time. To achieve his dreams, Bernard set about focusing on a style dedicated to one grape, the rich and most refined: Chardonnay. This grape today still injects such finesse and lightness into so many Laurent-Perrier champagnes. He also looked to fermentation, doing away with traditional wooden casks and turning towards stainless-steel tanks. These led to a fresher, purer taste – a champagne that was cleaner on the palate and always eminently drinkable. Bernard also tried fermenting at lower temperatures and discovered he could conserve very special, subtle flavours that were usually lost. Testing the notion that the top of the range champagnes, the “prestige cuvées”, had to be vintage, Bernard reasoned that no individual vintage could ever be complete, simply because you can never reasonably expect to find all the best characteristics of a champagne in a single year – however good that year might be. On the other hand, if one blended several great vintages, one had a chance to re-create the perfect year. This insight opened the door to a new generation of exquisitely elegant champagnes – the finest of all being Bernard’s most famous creation, Grand Siècle. “The best of the best with the best” as Bernard de Nonancourt described it, Grand Siècle is an extraordinary blend of wines from only the top vintage years made from the finest crus and grapes. A tour de force of the blender’s art that has few equals. ast season was a vintage year for polo ponies, raising the bar still higher for the sheer brilliance of these equines at all levels. Focusing on the Cartier Queen’s Cup alone it is humbling to note that around 700 different ponies played across the three weeks of the tournament and picking out only the absolute best in this feature would be both divisive and demeaning as they all deserve a mention. So I have focused on those horses with a story to tell so that the reader may remember them and/or look out for them in 2022. That said it was no easy task to choose from such an impressive cast. N o t h i n g i s m o re rewa rd i n g fo r a commentator than old favourites appearing year after year and Biscuit is a neat fit. Having raced four times as an Irish Thoroughbred under the name Les Soeurs, she was bought, aged 2, by Matt Perry’s mother in 2005. Renamed Biscuit, she first appeared in the high-goal in 2011 when Matt was just 19, playing for La Bamba de Areco. A lynchpin of improving his game Matt played her in both the 2013 and ‘14 Queen’s Cup finals when winning with Zacara. Roll on to the 2021 season and Biscuit, now aged 18, was Matt’s first chukka pony for Murus Sanctus – and appropriately claimed the 2021 Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Champion crown. He is easy to recognise with Faye Tuthill along with the Lapa clones CO3, his big white nose. Sarmiento first came to CO5 and CO7, who all featured strongly with UK when Marcos di Paola bought him as a Adolfo Cambiaso for Scone Polo. This trio, five-year-old from Ellerstina. He has since now aged 10, can be distinguished by differing crossed the Atlantic at least three times to combinations of white feet although Adolfo play with Hilario Ulloa and Facundo Pieres would admit to CO7 being his favourite in English high-goal and the Argentine playing pony in 2021. She went on to win the Open. Last season he was again prominent Best Playing Pony (BPP) prize in the Hubert Perodo Trophy semi-final match and was then played by Adolfo in the first and sixth chukkas of last year’s Queen’s Cup Final. A number of Adolfo’s ponies have a cloning background. The distinctive eight-year-old, white faced, chestnut mare Antonella is out of A3, a clone of Raptor owned by American player Owen Rinehart. Meanwhile the striking, five-year-old chestnut Dolfina All Nippon, with four white feet, is out of the

original dam Lapa and sired by clone Cura, whom Adolfo was able to clone several years after the original Cura sadly broke a leg. Such are the wonders of modern science. Interestingly, the seven-year-old, chestnut stallion Dona Sofia Tsunami, who was usually played by Poroto Cambiaso in the third chukka for Scone Polo, is out of Showme the first polo pony clone; whilst his sire Valet is a brother to the renowned Cuatetera. The bloodlines of Cuatetera run deep and Alessandro Bazzoni’s brilliant pony Machitos Lithuania, an 11-year-old dark bay mare who regularly turns out in the sixth chukka for Monterosso, is a half-sister to Cuatetera. One of the interesting features of last year’s Queen’s Cup tournament was that at least 12 stallions played, including one of my favourites, the 12-year-old, dark bay Open Tulipan with Juan Britos and Challo Angelo, aged 8, for Bartolme Castagnola of Great Oaks/Les Lions who

was the BPP of the 2020 Queen’s Cup. Management of stallions during both the playing and off seasons is challenging, so it is encouraging to see increasing numbers remaining entire, thus contributing to future polo pony bloodlines. Of course it would be invidious not to mention some other Best Playing Ponies and

the 11-year-old chestnut mare JB Bleach, bred and formerly owned by James Beim, was appropriately crowned the Best Pony on finals day last year after an outstanding performance in the first and sixth chukkas. In that match she was played by Polito Pieres, a member of the victorious UAE Polo Team. Meanwhile, the top pony in the 2019 Queen’s and Coronation Cups, Twitter (played that year by James Harper) was outstanding throughout the 2021 Queen’s Cup for Facundo Pieres and Park Place, while the 2017 US Open BPP Dolfina Gayta, now 14, played with distinction for Scone Polo’s Cambiaso duo. Easily recognisable horses always catch the eye so the 11-year-old New Zealand grey mare Peaches, formerly played by James Harper, attracted much attention when out on the field with Dillon Bacon for Great Oaks LL. Similarly, the eye-catching, Australian, eight-year-old, steel-grey mare Desiree owned by David Paradice and played by Adolfo Cambiaso was very impressive. Perhaps the most memorable grey though was the workhorse of the tournament – Alberta Juniper. Aged nine, this mare was played two or three times a match by the UAE Polo Team’s Tomas Panelo, no doubt helping Tomas to progress from six to eight goals on handicap and be named the Most Valuable Player in the Cartier final. Juniper was the standout pony of the season for me – combining excellence with resilience and stamina. A horse in good spirits is always a favourite so Hugo Taylor’s black mare, the 11-year-old Dolfina Milla, normally in action in the third chukka for the UAE Polo Team II, was

an eye-catcher as she bucked and flicked her tail until settling down. Her inclusion has added poignancy as her eight-year-old daughter Dona Sofia Milesima was usually played by Hugo in the first chukka. Another pony with much character is the 11-year-old black gelding Kenya for Tommy Beresford, sired by the renowned stallion Clark, who was outstanding throughout the tournament, faithfully turning out for Tommy in the first and last chukkas.

rying to pick out all the horses as players change two or three times a chukka is challenging when commentating so I must mention James Harper of White Crane who religiously sticks to his pre–determined order. Beautifully conservative in preserving his horses, it was a delight to see ponies such as L'Oréal, Furlong, Tia, Sabine and Centaur playing match after match in the same order. Meanwhile the beautiful, little, black, nine-year-old mare Casola (like Twitter originally bred and owned by Jim Gilmore) moved to Nico Pieres, also of White Crane, after the 2020 season. Nico had 42

another nine-year-old mare of note playing, a distinctive Argentine roan with four white feet – the brilliant Lourdes. She is certainly one to keep an eye on in 2022. The modern game of polo initially imposed a height restriction on polo ponies at 14.2 hands but this was abolished in 1919, resulting in ponies and horses of all sizes being played today. However pocket rockets are still formidable weapons, so watching Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha (Top) break clear on the pint-sized Los Cocos Picarona to confidently score for King Power was evidence enough. At this level of course many other ponies stood out among the 15 high-goal teams that entered but Tinta, played by Ignacio Toccalino for Monterosso, deserves a particular mention. A beautiful, 12-year-old chestnut with distinctive three white feet and face, originally bred by Luke Tomlinson, Tinta reliably turned out twice a match to provide Ignacio with the perfect hitting platform for his impressive 60-yard conversions. Of course sometimes it is a horse’s catchy name that stays in the mind, such as two tremendous nine-year-olds of Pelon Stirling
– the dark bay mare Maserati and the chestnut gelding appropriately named Tiger. Few though can have a more aristocratic moniker than the 2013 Westchester Cup BPP Don Urbano Rolinga, another stallion and frequent flyer across the Atlantic. Last season he was played by both HH Sheikha Maitha and Polito Pieres in the UAE Polo Team. Although my own personal award for an unforgettable name has to be BP Polo’s Alejandro Muzzio’s great bay mare Evil Woman! So which ponies are likely to shine this season? One yet to be mentioned is the 10-year-old, plain chestnut Fina Sandy owned by Andrey Borodin and starring on the front cover of this magazine. She was played by Facundo Pieres with great success in the latter high-goal tournaments of 2021, having previously played in the Argentine Open. I suspect we will see plenty more of Fina Sandy this season, alongside Andrey’s sevenyear-old, dark bay mare Open Sintetica, another star of the latter 2021 tournaments. Polo is brilliant at cutting across the generations and genders – but it is always those four equine feet which make it tick. So raise a glass to our pony maestros! n

Today the distinctive Tesla badge is a familiar sight on roads around the world and a Tesla Roadster is currently heading to Mars as the dummy payload for the SpaceX Falcon Heavy test flight. The second edition of this electric Roadster will go into production next year with a retail price of around £189,000. Firmly in the hypercar section, it offers 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds. Elon Musk even tweeted that, with a nod to his other passion, expanding space travel, Tesla may offer a SpaceX version which would include “10 small rocket thrusters arranged seamlessly around the car” which will allow for remarkable improvements in “acceleration, top speed, braking and cornering”. Ferrari 296 GTB The world-famous Italian marque has successfully combined its new, 120-degree, V6 engine with a plug-in electric motor to deliver a fabulous Ferrari that also boasts excellent green credentials. The ultimate of hybrids will be launched later this year and will feature the prancing horse’s first six-cylinder engine since 1974. The Ferrari 296 GTB boasts a top speed of 205mph thanks to its superlight chassis (1,470 kilos) and an awesome 0 – 62mph in 2.9 seconds. The electric power on its own is pretty decent too, with a range of 16 miles and speeds of up to 84mph thanks to a 7.45kWh battery. Not surprisingly – this is Ferrari after all – there is no compromise on style inside and out and those lucky enough to have already taken this car for a spin say that the V6 engine can still deliver that distinctive, much heralded, Ferrari engine note.

hile his playing days may be over, after incredible success with a variety of teams, John Collins remains a key figure at Guards Polo Club. MAKING MAGIC IN THE MOUNTAINS
T
here’s a thunder of hooves and a flurry of diamond-like flakes catch the sunlight as they chip and rise from a frozen lake. Spectators wrapped in vintage mink watch a game of titans play out in the basin below the Engadin mountains, cerulean skies overhead, a Swiss chocolate box of chalet roofs behind. Champagne chills, international accents ebb and flow, and a fleet of sleek ponies and bold players race after the ball, sticks held aloft. Welcome to Snow Polo World Cup St Moritz. “Snow Polo World Cup St Moritz is a cocktail of senses,” says hotelier, founder, and organiser, Reto Gaudenzi. “Polo, the sexiest sport on earth, is played in this beautiful natural arena in front of an international crowd. It’s a bit of a cliché, but it [the event] has one hell of an atmosphere.” The Swiss town of St Moritz is known for
its sporting innovations and often madcap ideas. It is home to the oldest bobsleigh track in the world, and the infamous Cresta Run where individuals career headfirst down a luge on toboggans at speeds of 80mph. The alpine playground presents White Turf where jockeys gallop thoroughbreds around the frozen lake and promotes skijoring where “riders” ski behind their horses in heartstopping fashion. Then, of course, there are the world-class slopes which have hosted two Winter Olympics. So in the early 1980s, when the idea for snow polo was raised by Reto Gaudenzi, it was met with great interest. St Moritz’s tourism director, Hanspeter Danuser, in particular, recognised the potential and started beating the advertising drum for the project – and Gaudenzi and his team set to work on logistics. and Switzerland were encouraged to swap the arenas and Palm Beach pitches more usually associated with polo in January for the icy surface of the lake. Visionary sponsors such as Cartier shared Gaudenzi’s enthusiasm for such a spectacle. The ponies were brought in by trucks driven through the mountain passes and temperaturecontrolled, 5m x 5m stables were built – which, considering the eye-watering price of real estate in the Engadin, were positively palatial – while a local blacksmith fashioned special horseshoes for added grip. A crowd gathered for the inaugural event in 1985 – only to be met with heavy snowfall and minimal visibility. “You could not see a thing,” remembers Gaudenzi. “But then the next morning we woke to the blue skies you only find in St Moritz… and the day had an incredible ambience.” That date marked the premiere of an event that now welcomes 15,000 guests, sponsors, media and polo players from around the globe. There is caviar-laden, VIP lake-side hospitality and a carnival of cocktail parties
capped with a gala at the legendary Badrutt’s Palace. The pitch itself now measures 200m x 90m, five times its original size, created only when the frozen lake’s ice measures over 50cm thick. Some of the most renowned polo dynasties have appeared on the tournament’s team lists including Donoso and Novillo Astrada, whilst players often seen on the pitches of Guards Polo Club such as Guy Schwarzenbach, Richard Tyrone, Nacho Gonzalez, and Max Charlton have enjoyed success in the snow, with Chris Hyde in particular winning time and time again. With its mix of high-octane sport and high-end charm, it is no surprise that such a spectacle sparked interest around the world.
Other European destinations soon followed, with notable events in Cortina, Italy, Courchevel, France, and Kitzbühel, Austria. The latter is today run by Gaudenzi’s son, Tito who has grown Kitzbühel Polo from a four-team, weekend tournament to a three-day extravaganza with players competing in the snowy arena while DJs play through the evening. In 2011, on the other side of the world, a short bullet train ride from Beijing, the Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club hosted its first snow polo tournament. Adverse weather conditions meant the newlyformed, Chinese club invested millions of dollars in crafting snow to create and carpet the pitches, but by the following year the

Federation of International Polo (FIP) had endorsed the event and teams from the UK to Australia battled to claim the invitational trophy. A couple of years later and snow polo arrived in Aspen, USA. Much like St Moritz, this Colorado mountain town easily attracts superstars and super-skiers with luxury stores and grand hotels lining the avenues and pristine pistes beckoning heli-skiers and snowboarders. Now organised by high-goal patrons Melissa and Marc Ganzi and their team at Aspen Valley Polo Club, this tournament has undoubtedly taken inspiration from the Engadin original while creating a vision all of its own. The most recent edition of Aspen’s World Snow Polo Championship, which occurred just ahead of Christmas 2021, paired Hollywood glamour with polo played in the shadow of Mount Sopris. While the likes of Nacho Figueras and Guards Polo Club

Like its fellow snow polo tournaments, the Aspen edition strives to create not only an impressive sporting spectacle, but a celebration of its surroundings. “Aspen is definitely one of my favourites places to play,” comments 2018 Cartier Queen’s Cup winner, Nic Roldan. “I don’t know if snow polo requires different skills [to grass], but it’s more about being fearless, playing with a lot of grit, and perhaps some Dutch Courage! “It’s a special time of year as the holidays are around the corner, there are plenty of fun dinners and lots of skiing which makes the event so fun. Plus there’s some unique experiences. This year we were taken to a wonderful evening dining experience up the mountain by snow cat!” Such extraordinary backdrops undeniably 68

make for extraordinary memories in a sport as riveting as it is ritzy. But of course, it comes with its challenges. Naturally COVID-19 has impacted the tournaments in recent times, snowfall and cloud cover have put paid to many a match over the years, and even too warm weather has called for cancellations, like in 2012 when insufficient ice quality meant a year sans snow polo in St Moritz. “There have been challenges,” says Gaudenzi. “But us mountain boys are good at adapting!” In only St Moritz's second year, impenetrable snowfall blocked the Bernina, Julier and Maloja road passes to the lake. While guests could fly their private jets into Samedan Airport (at 5,600 feet above sea level, it is the highest airliner airport in Europe), the horses needed to be brought in by train. Gaudenzi describes the journey as he rattled along in the carriages, he and the grooms trying to keep the horses calm as the train snaked its way through the mountain, before making
it to St Moritz just as dusk was falling. “I remember we were leading the ponies off the train down into this deep, deep snow. Many of them had never seen it before and were pawing the ground before one by one, they all laid down and rolled. It was one of the most memorable moments for me, with the backdrop of the mountains... it was magical.” Amongst the glitz and the glamour, the pomp and the ceremony, the champagne and the Cresta, snow polo is exactly that: magical. n

It is time to celebrate as the wine market now regularly outperforms the more sober FTSE 100 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average. However Guy Woodward suggests that we don’t hunt for the corkscrew but lay the foundations for a financially sound cellar

n terms of the accoutrements of a luxury lifestyle – Ferrari, third home, membership of a prestigious polo club – the wine cellar is a worthy aspiration. Who isn’t seduced by the idea of popping downstairs to scan the dusty racks, each filled with bottles of classed growth claret and grand cru Burgundy, ready for the cork to be pulled for the evening’s dinner? For all the romance of such a scene, however, there is also a more hard-nosed imperative to collecting wine. Profit. For while it might seem an unorthodox – eccentric even – investment path compared to the stock market or currency trading, wine can be equally, if not more, rewarding. And that’s without considering the secondary benefits. Over the past year, based on a portfolio of the top 100 most tradeable wines, the wine market has outperformed the FTSE 100, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the price of gold, delivering a gradual return of 20%. Such a performance is outflanked only by the price rise of crude oil, which, it should be noted, is somewhat less easy to store in your basement! According to global fine wine marketplace Liv-ex, records originally set in 2020 were surpassed in 2021, which was the most successful year ever for the secondary fine wine market. “Fine wine trading continually broke new ground in terms of the value of wine traded and the sheer breadth of wines now active in the market”, it stated in its latest Fine Wine Report. “The Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 index [which tracks the price performance of the 100 most-traded wines on the secondary market] reclaimed and then exceeded its decade-old former peak, while the Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000 index rose for 18 consecutive months.” Such indices are a more than useful benchmark. Like the FTSE, they represent the blue-chip wines that are the most reliable investments.
Unlike the stock market though, the wine market doesn’t tend to throw up boomers that come from nowhere and deliver astronomical returns in a short period of time. You are not going to unearth an unheralded £15 Chilean Syrah that suddenly receives rave reviews from the cognoscenti and becomes a hot property overnight. Instead, expect slow, gradual, but generally reliable increments from wines with a proven track record. The plus side is that wine is arguably a safer bet than the volatility of more traditional trading markets, open as they are to events that are often impossible to predict. For the most part that means looking to the classic names of Bordeaux and, increasingly, Burgundy. The former has the benefit of being widely available and proven on the market, with estates ranked neatly in an established classification, which is largely reflected by prices and demand, making for easy navigation. The latter is less uniform and has tended to see more stratospheric prices rises in recent times, though the flipside is that the wines are produced in much smaller quantities and can be exceedingly difficult to get hold of for newcomers. To access the most covetable wines, you will need to get on the books of reputable merchants, who receive allocations of the most vaunted wines and, in turn, offer first refusal on such wines to their most loyal customers. some wines reaching tens of thousands at auction, there have been several examples of counterfeits –more Château Lafleur 1947 has been sold than were ever made – while the notorious Rudi Kurniawan was only caught (and jailed) when he tried to sell a vintage of Burgundy’s Domaine Ponsot dating back to before the wine was made! Equally important as the provenance is how the wine has been stored. Bottles that have changed hands numerous times, moving across the world and potentially sitting in a container on the Hong Kong dock, or being stored under the stairs in a London flat, risk losing condition and will fetch lower prices than bottles than have lain undisturbed in dark, cool conditions for their whole life. If you don’t have a stable, temperaturecontrolled cellar at home, look to store your wines in a bonded warehouse, where their life cycle can be traced. And if all else fails, of course, it is time to pull that cork… n

sales staff so that they come to you when wines are first released. If it takes a while to do so, or you want a bit more variety in your portfolio, look towards the easier-to-get-hold-of but increasingly traded wines from Italy, California (by which we really mean Napa Valley) and Champagne, all of which are slowly gaining more traction. Again, the same rules apply – look for the established, coveted names. In California, this is largely the usual suspects – Harlan, Screaming Eagle, Colgin – which start high and go even higher. There’s more room for manoeuvre in Italy and Champagne, which are more fluid and less dominated by the big names, but again, consider those cuvées made in more limited quantities – you are not going to get rich by holding onto a case of Moët & Chandon for 10 years. Arguably as important as selecting the right wines, however, is purchasing from a reputable source. When it comes to selling wines on the secondary market, whether at auction or through the increasing number of broker channels, provenance is key. With

RETIRING IN STYLE
ust south of London’s King’s Road and just north of the Thames is the impressive Royal Hospital, home to the Chelsea Pensioners for more than 300 years – King Charles II founded the hospital in 1682 for "the relief and succour" of his veteran soldiers. Sir Christopher Wren designed the building using the Hotel des Invalides in Paris as a model and the result is an impressive example of the symmetry and grace that characterises all of his buildings. Wren arranged the housing of 412 veterans around a central quadrangle called Figure Court with a statue of Charles ll in the middle. Further courts were added, including wings on the East and West sides for the Long Wards to act as the Pensioners’ living quarters. The Great Hall dining room, with its glorious black-andwhite floor tiles, was originally not connected to the kitchens but this inconvenience has now been rectified, along with the restoration of a large mural depicting Charles ll, which is displayed on the back wall and dates to around 1690. By the end of the 18th century, the Pensioners started

A major change to life at the Chelsea Hospital occurred in 2009 when women were admitted as In-Pensioners for the first time
collecting their food from the kitchen and dining in the Wards, freeing up the Great Hall for court martials, Army entrance exams and, most famously, the laying-in-state of the Duke of Wellington's body in 1852. His coffin rested on a table that is still there, just by the entrance. In 1955, the Hall was restored to its original purpose though instead of the oak benches the Pensioners use chairs. The Royal Hospital is always worth a visit. The Council Chamber in the State Apartments was designed as the dining room for visiting royalty, while the quadrangle in Light Horse Court was added by Wren for James II in 1687. Meanwhile the Wren Chapel holds a service every Sunday at 11am to which everyone is welcome and a Coffee Shop is in the grounds – a hidden gem with lovely views of the beautiful Ranelagh Gardens.
All Chelsea Pensioners have served as ordinary soldiers in the Armed Forces and today ex serviceman over 65 and looking to face their advanced years alone can apply for residency. Interestingly, from 1692 until 1955 all Army pensions were administered and paid out of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, which is why all Army pensioners were known as Chelsea Pensioners. There are two categories of Chelsea Pensioner: the In-Pensioner who has surrendered their Army Pension to be admitted as a resident at the Royal Hospital and the Out-Pensioner who is not a resident and has held on to their pension. When first applying to be an In-Pensioner, the applicant stays for four days on trial. The next stage depends on a vacancy as there are typically more applications than berths available. If all goes well, the prospective Pensioner is measured for their uniforms and given their own room, called a berth, in a ward. Many elements remain essentially unchanged in their grandeur for the modern Chelsea Pensioner, though there are modifications. The original berths, as designed by Wren, measured six feet by six but these have been recently upgraded to include a study area and en-suite bathroom facilities. G UA R D S P O L O C L U B

King’s Road, often on a mile-long pilgrimage to Stamford Bridge, the home of Chelsea Football Club whose matches they regularly attend and for whom they form a guard of honour on the pitch whenever Chelsea wins a trophy. When inside the Hospital, veterans wear a blue uniform. Their distinctive scarlet coats are only worn outside. However, as a result of a fundraising initiative, these distinctive coats will now be made with a lighter fabric as the Pensioners, who range between 67 to more than 100 years old, find that wearing these heavy coats beyond the confines of the hospital is hard work and has caused many to suffer in warm temperatures. To top it off, the Pensioners typically wear a peaked hat called a “shako” which they swap at ceremonial events for a tricorne hat. Currently, there are some 300 army veterans are in residence, comprising those who served in World War II, Korea, Cyprus, the Falklands and Northern Ireland. In that same year Margaret Thatcher created and opened an infirmary to offer a modern, quality care provision for the residents. She was held in high esteem by the Pensioners and used to live in nearby Flood Street before she entered Downing Street. Indeed, to mark the strength of this allegiance, her ashes are interred next to those of her husband Denis in the grounds of the Royal Hospital. In our modern world a Chelsea Pensioner can still be regularly seen walking down the

Becky Simpson, the manager of the La Martina Store at Guards Polo Club had a shock one quiet midweek morning when Russell Crowe cycled up from Coworth Park to do a spot of shopping! In just 24 hours the renowned director’s art department had swiftly turned our traditional English sporting clubhouse into an all-American club dining room. It even had its own, bespoke menus on every table. I can recall having to call our head groundsman to ask him to stop mowing on ground six because the continuity advisor had spotted that we were not using an American make of tractor and that movie goers would notice. Their attention to detail was impressive! However Ridley Scott was already very familiar with all that Windsor Great Park had to offer. A couple of years earlier he had been in the Park with Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett filming Robin Hood. Becky Simpson, the manager of the La Martina Store at Guards Polo Club had a shock one

O
ne of the most popular film locations in the UK is Windsor Great Park. Millions of movie lovers will have watched a film that has been shot on location somewhere within the 4,800 acres of Windsor Great Park and Swinley Forest and not a million miles away from Guards Polo Club. The list is hugely varied, ranging from some of the early Harry Potter franchise to Ridley Scott’s The Counsellor. Netflix’s Bridgerton, the bodiceripping, alternative take on Jane Austen has a claim on the Park too, with film sequences shot near to the Obelisk Pond. Adverts and TV series have also made the most of the Park’s varied scenery and backdrops too. Guards Polo Club even handed over their entire Clubhouse to Ridley Scott and his talented Counsellor crew in 2012.

Later, when interviewed for the I Love Filming In. . . series, Sir Kenneth recalled that “in the scenes in the movie like the meeting of the Prince and Cinderella on horseback in the forest we shot in Windsor Great Park. It was great in a scene of magical atmosphere to tell the actors that the trees are older than Shakespeare. That bit of English heritage is so wonderful to capture on film.” Into The Woods director Rob Marshall is 82

equally generous in his compliments about the Park. “I love Windsor Great Park, there is nothing like it,” said the director in an I Love Filming In. . . interview. “These enormous trees and that waterfall that we found for that wonderful number called Agony, which was really magic.” Actor Anna Kendrick agreed with her Into The Woods director. “We were very lucky as we got to film in Windsor Park [sic] and felt very spoiled by that. It was just gorgeous, some of the most gorgeous location work in the film.” In fact there is usually some part of the Park that is being transformed into a magical or futuristic world. n

he annual Members’ Clubhouse Christmas Lunch delivered a packed menu, including some delicious Christmas food. However, to ensure that all the guests were feeling festive, diners were first entertained by the choir of the Royal Chapel of All Saints, the tiny church located in the heart of Windsor Great Park. Song sheets were at the ready for those diners young and old who wished to join in with the Choir’s lilting voices. Every guest also received a free ticket to the stunning Windsor Great Park Illuminated. With the evening drawing in, this wonderful light trail guided our Members and their guests on a magical journey as the Park came alive with dazzling lights, dancing stars and breath-taking projections. This was a Christmas event to remember and we look forward to recreating the magic in 2022. n 84

t was wonderful to be able to return to the Frogmore Arena at the Royal Windsor Horse Show to compete in the Guards Polo Club-sponsored polo pony classes last July. The covid pandemic had forced the UK’s largest outdoor show to move to a virtual platform in 2020 and although the polo ponies had been included, it was not the same as competing in the shadow of Windsor Castle at one of the world’s leading horse shows. Although live, the 2021 polo pony competition was a more intimate affair than previous years – the change of date to early July meant that polo clubs were already at full-speed with polo tournaments and so players were short on time. That said, seven quality ponies competed jointly for the Colonel Sir John Aird Championship Cup. Pre-pandemic, the competition had been divided into two individual classes: HH The Maharajah of Jaipur Challenge Cup (Polo Pony) and the General Sir Rodney Moore Challenge Cup (Retraining of Racehorse (RoR) Thoroughbred) before each winner going head-to-head for the Championship. However, in 2021 the organisers combined both classes under the judging eyes of Guards Polo Club Director of Polo Antony Fanshawe and Lord Charles Beresford. It was particularly appropriate that Lord Charles judged these classes as his uncle, Lord Patrick Beresford, had founded this polo pony competition back in 1959 and went on to win the Championship several times. Lord Patrick died in March 2020 but these prestigious polo pony showing classes remain the ideal legacy for such a consummate horseman. After a clean sweep of the first three places in the 2019 Jaipur class and her Luciana 88

going on to be named overall Champion, Siri Evjemo-Nysveen returned in 2021 with her Vikings team again fielding a strong line-up of four outstanding ponies. As part of this team we were privileged to have Sebastian Merlos, a former 10-goaler and one of the global polo greats for the past three decades, join us in the ring. Every rider was attired as if for polo – the four Vikings’ competitors looking particularly smart in their white team colours – the only difference this year being that polo sticks were not carried. Jaime Roberts came out first on Machitos Fiorella, an 11-year-old bay mare who competed in the 2019 class. The duo delivered a swift, impressive display; not surprising given that this mare had played solidly with

Monterosso’s Mackenzie Weisz throughout the high-goal season, usually appearing in the third chukka, as she did in both the final of The Prince of Wales Trophy at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club and right through the Cartier Queen’s Cup. Following on from Fiorella was the immaculately turned-out Elf, a 10-year-old, home-bred gelding of Oli Hipwood’s, ridden by Claire Campbell. They had been placed fourth in the 2018 class and on this, Elf’s third appearance, they put on an equally eye-catching display. Next up was the veteran of this class, the author’s own 25-year-old, striking, black, New Zealand mare Chloe. She was competing for the ninth time, having first performed 18 years earlier in 2003. She is a previous winner of the Lightweight Class in 2004 and 2008 and took the overall Sir John Aird Championship in 2008. Foot perfect as ever, Chloe put on a nimble display, much appreciating the light weight and touch of her rider Louise Saul, competing on her for the third successive year. Fourth into the ring was Pepe Araya, riding the versatile, nine-year-old chestnut mare

Machitos Vanessa. This mare’s adaptability was highlighted during last year’s high-goal season as she was played by Alessandro Bazzoni in the fifth chukka of the final of the Prince of Wales Trophy, before partnering with Mackenzie Weisz in the first chukka of the Cartier Queen’s Cup S e m i - Fi n a l a n d t h e n teaming up with Matt Perry in the first and fifth chukkas of the final of the Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup. A remarkable demonstration of her versatility. After a brief display by the author on his 16-year-old Argentine mare, Novalgina, originally owned by high-goal professional Diego Cavanagh, it was the turn of Siri Evjemo-Nysveen riding her nine-year-old, retrained racehorse Riba Roja, who had competed in the 2019 class. A relaxed, fluid display put down a strong marker with the judges for a place on the podium before Seb
Merlos entered the ring on another pony from the breeding of Mariano Aguerre, the 11-year-old mare Machitos Barcelona. There followed a truly memorable display as this duo powered around the ring. In fact Seb was e n j oy i n g h i m s e l f s o much that we benefitted from a full, five-minute demonstration rather than the allocated three minutes. Given that the mare has played the Argentine Open and last year competed with both Mackenzie Weisz and Matt Perry in the high-goal it was no surprise that we were treated to such a sequence. The mark of a great polo pony is versatility, including being able to be ridden by all-comers so judge Antony Fanshawe, having ridden Riba Roja, Barcelona and Fiorella – and after consultation with fellow judge Lord Charles Beresford – awarded Riba Roja the overall Colonel Sir John Aird Championship G UA R D S P O L O C L U B

Cup along with HH The Maharajah of Jaipur Challenge Cup. Meanwhile, the Windsor Polo Club of Australia Cup for the Reserve Champion went to Machitos Fiorella. The Towry Law Silver Jubilee Trophy for the Best Turn Out was appropriately awarded to Elf. A beaming Siri was exultant with her second successive clean sweep of the first three places but was particularly delighted with the performance of Riba Roja who, immaculately bred, has the Group One winner 92

Sadler’s Wells as her grandsire. Siri brought Riba Roja as a two-year-old at the Ascot Sales and so this win was especially rewarding as Siri made the mare herself and has seen her develop over the succeeding years. The last week in September is always a key week at the Club. There may not be any polo but it is the time of year when we host our annual coffee and cake event as part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. This year was particularly memorable as we raised a staggering £2,500 in just two hours. This was testament to the huge support that the Club received from all of its amazing members, their friends and the staff and stewards at Smith’s Lawn. Special mention must go to Lucia Reckovicova, the wife of our former Head Groundsman Peter Svoboda, for baking the delicious cake which was auctioned during the morning. Thanks to both Michelle Sedgemore for her generous bidding to secure the delicious magnum of Tyringham Hall English Sparkling Wine and to Julia Fall 94

for her substantial bid to secure the Vorwerk Stoneware serving dishes and the Inkerman notebook and glass bowl. When South Africa played England for the Coronation Cup in 2013 their young team – thought to be the youngest ever – impressed everyone. It’s easy to see why if you take a visit the Plett Polo Club just outside Plettenberg Bay. The Kurland Estate offers four full sized fields and hosts tournaments from December through to April, including the Kurland International Polo Test. history alive, and it quickly became apparent the money needed to keep the old house from falling in on itself was not growing on any of the trees in the grounds. Coming at it from another world (Anselm was happily DJing and starting world renowned parties before this; Hence being dubbed the hedonistic heir) a vision was born for a sustainably run party venue, and a £1.5 million refurbishment ensued… As well as lovingly restoring the house and bedrooms for guest accommodation, a biomass boiler for entirely carbon neutral heating was installed, then once planning was secured in 2013 The Gillyflower rose-up; crafted from the very earth it stands on. Wi t h ( n o w R I BA a w a rd w i n n i n g ) soundproof reception venue complete, and happy couples’ and guests dining and partying till the wee hours, the next unfolding’s of sustainability could be realised… Since then Elmore Court has; • Fully revived the Victorian kitchen gardens to grow much of the ingredients for the 5 star wedding menus in-house. • Given 250 acres of the estate back to nature in rewilding project. • Introduced long horn cattle into the wilding land (who have just given birth to their first calves) • Calculated the carbon footprint of all travelling to and from the estate to offset this.
