Involvement Is Rewarding STORY Wyatt Langstraat DESIGN Zach Thomson This Winter Quarter will be chock-full of fun events, giveaways, and custom Wildcat Converse through the new Wildcat 8 program. "We want to show all the involved students that we are aware of them and that we appreciate them," said Brandon Wear-Grimm, a senior student engagement lead for Student Involvement and pioneer of this program. A major goal of the program is to get students involved in different activities across campus. According to WearGrimm, at least 16 events this quarter qualify as Wildcat 8 events. These events fall into one of eight dimensions of student life and success: social, cultural, financial, emotional/physical, spiritual, environmental, occupa-
4
tional, and intellectual. Along with rewarding involved students, Wear-Grimm said the program is designed to increase collaboration throughout the university. "We … go through all the events on campus and designate what’s a Wildcat 8 event," he said. "We work with that department and say [to students] 'If you come to this event, you’re entered to win all these cool Wildcat 8 prizes as well as be celebrated at the end of the year.'" This program also marks a shift in approach for Student Involvement to better understand who is attending events on campus. "We're moving into a new era of collecting data and understanding where we can improve in Student Involvement and better serve the student body as a whole," said Wear-Grimm. "It’s helping with transparency overall within Student Involvement, just letting people know who we are helping with our services."
How Can I Get Involved? 1.
Attend Any Wildcat 8 event
Each event you attend counts as an entry, so the more events you go to, the more likely you are to win! Check out the list of events in the back of Hype to see which ones are designated Wildcat 8.
3.

For the cold weather enthusiast, winter in Ellensburg is a dream. Hills and mountains surround our valley, providing the perfect opportunity to get out into the snow and go skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, or ice skating. There’s a difficult side to winter, too. It’s dark, and it’s cold. According to materials from the CWU Wellness Center, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that comes and goes with the seasons. These depressive episodes are characterized by low energy, sleeping more, and social withdrawal. Avoiding the cold by staying inside and plugging away at school work can be good for your grades, but there may be an increased risk of developing SAD symptoms. STORY Wyatt Langstraat DESIGN Kathleen Anderson
As part of their ways to beat SAD campaign, the Wellness Center recommends students go outside and get as much natural light as possible. Luckily for students, Outdoor Pursuits and Recreation (OPR) has many fun and engaging trips planned to help students have fun and thrive in winter. “Winter here in Ellensburg can be kind of difficult. It’s pretty dark,” said Tonya Morrey, OPR program manager. “I think that OPR provides an excellent opportunity for people
6
to get outside, get some sunshine, (and) meet other people who might be trying something new for the first time also, or have similar interests that you do.” Each Tuesday starting Jan. 14, skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels are welcome to join OPR’s ski shuttles to Snoqualmie Pass for some fun night skiing. The bus departs at 3:15 p.m. from Central and returns around 9:30 p.m. The shuttle costs just $10 for students. Make sure to purchase your lift ticket from OPR before heading up to the pass. Not so confident on the slopes? Well, how about on ice? What says “winter” more than ice skating outdoors with good friends? On Jan. 18, enjoy the fresh mountain air of nearby Cle Elum and slide around on the ice rink at Suncadia Resort. This trip departs from Central at 5 p.m., returns around 9:45 p.m., and costs $10 for students.
snowshoe, the Cascades Meadow Snowshoe, happens on March 7. This trip takes students trekking through the eastern region of the Cascade Mountains. Be sure to attend the pre-trip meetings the Thursday before each trip, Jan. 23 and March 5. Both trips will depart from Central at 10 a.m. and return around 6 p.m. on their respective dates, and cost $32 per trip for students. These are only a few of the activities students can take advantage of this winter, as OPR has many other fun trips planned. “We try and make sure … (to) have things going on throughout the whole quarter,” Morrey said. Check out Hype or cwu.edu/ opr for a full list of trips and details. Survive and thrive this winter, Wildcats!
OPR also is offering two opportunities to snowshoe this winter season. The first will be the Mountain Snowshoe trip on Jan. 25. Participants will snowshoe a local mountain for astounding views of the neighboring Cascade peaks. The second chance to

Goals for 2020 Session
Wake up, eat breakfast, brush teeth, go to class, repeat. That’s the morning of a typical college student, but for students like Zackary Turner, Associated Students of Central Washington University Vice President of Legislative Affairs, and Nancy Canales-Montiel, current CWU student lobbyist, their mornings consist of business attire, meetings, and speaking to state lawmakers during the legislative session.
This year, Canales-Montiel will direct her efforts toward the full implementation of funding for the Washington College Grant that was passed last year. It will provide tuition funding for the 2020-2021 school year to low-income students who qualify.
“I’m a college student and I put on a suit every day and pretended I was an adult,” said Turner, who served as the CWU student lobbyist last year. The appointed student lobbyist packs up their life in Ellensburg and moves to Olympia for a quarter to lobby on issues specifically affecting CWU students. Day to day, these students meet with legislators to discuss why voting for a specific bill is important, testify in front of committees, and collaborate with other student lobbyists and the Washington Student Association, which represents all students attending public universities in Washington. In her own words, Canales-Montiel defined her position as “representing the students to the state legislature” and listening “to what students have or what they need, and then turn that into policy somehow.” Students like Turner and Canales-Montiel have a unique opportunity to represent CWU to the state. Turner explained his experience as being “the scariest thing I’ve ever done, but also the most exciting thing I’ve ever done.” In January, Canales-Montiel, a political science and public policy major, will move to Olympia for a 60-day legislative session. She is most excited to see firsthand how policy comes to be and the logistics behind it, as well as “seeing change happen in front of me for the better of students and for generations to come.”
She will also push for the Undocumented Student Loan Program that would permit undocumented students to qualify for state loans, and the K-12 Consent Education bill which redesigns the sex education curriculum for state school districts.
Lobby Day To get these bills passed and for Canales-Montiel to have an effective term, students need to share their voice at Lobby Day. On Jan. 20 students will be bussed to Olympia for an all-expenses-paid day trip to share their opinions with legislators in hopes of enacting change for college campuses across the state. This support from students is vital to have a prominent effect on policy because legislators are human, Turner said. “They do and react to things that are in front of them,” he said. “Me and Nancy are there all the time, that’s great, we keep them accountable. But if students aren’t in front of them, yelling at their doorsteps, they’re not paying attention.” Canales-Montiel said everyone has a different story, and it helps to bring in a diverse group of students to talk about how bills impact their ability to get an education. “Seeing that real life effect, for representatives is crucial,” Canales-Montiel said.

Cultural Showcase
What to Expect
This quarter, the Central Washington University Diversity and Equity Center (DEC) invites you to attend Parade of Nations from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 23 in the Student Union & Recreation Center (SURC) Ballroom. This vibrant event showcases the wide-ranging ethnic and cultural identities represented on campus and throughout Ellensburg. Free and open to the public, the event is one you won’t want to miss!
Expect a grand celebration of culture and heritage. In past years, performances by Poly Central, Filipino American Student Association, the Black Student Union, and more have been featured. The array of high-spirited performances and lively atmosphere will have you captivated all night long. Up for a challenge? Test your knowledge with trivia from around the world.
Parade of Nations offers a space for everyone to come and express themselves. Roziie Cardenas, a student programmer with the DEC, said, “The biggest takeaway is the amount of representation we have at Central.”
Traditional fashion will be on display and new music from around the world will delight your senses. After much preparation and anticipation, Cardenas is looking forward to taking in the energy of the room. With noticeable enthusiasm, she said, “I want to get chills.”
Multiple groups are able to come together in a welcoming environment to share their pride with the entire campus. It’s a special opportunity to view the different cultures that make up Central gathered together on one stage. Cardenas explained, “It’s like the melting pot of what we all have in one.”
Cardenas definitely won’t be the only one getting chills, Parade of Nations is sure to thrill every attendee. Take advantage of this opportunity to meet new people, immerse yourself in a new experience, and learn more about our community. Engage with the richness of other cultures at this great event!

Behind the Cu STORY Kiersten Kimminau DESIGN Dani Flores-Gomez
Before an ensemble of actors can dazzle audiences, lots of work must happen behind the scenes. Set designers, sound technicians, costume designers, lighting operators and more must come together to bring the stage to life. HYPE ventured behind the scenes to chat with student designers who work to bring you the stunning productions you see on stage.
Being a Designer
The Biggest Challenges
It’s challenging work, to say the least. Parker Gliessman, a costume designer with the Theatre Department, said, “I’ve worked pretty darn hard over the last four years with the department.” Over time, Gliessman has learned the importance of thinking about every small detail and how it affects the bigger picture.
CWU Theatre puts on brilliant productions, some large and some small. With bigger shows, Gliessman said the sheer size can be daunting. Summer added that collaboration is an important skill to have when communicating with multiple people all with their own ideas.
Leena Summer, a third-year design student at Central, has tentative plans to be the lead costume designer for the upcoming Short Works Festival. Summer is looking forward to the opportunity, and said the show is “a time for me to have some play space and do what I dream of as a designer without having a lot of limitations.”
12
Additionally, Gliessman strives to create pieces that will serve and look beautiful every night. If you ask us at Hype, we’d say that Gliessman, Summer and the rest of the student designers do an amazing job at accomplishing just that!
urtains Most Rewarding Moments
Coming Soon
The most gratifying moments vary from show to show. For Summer, it’s rewarding when the actors are really excited about their costumes. When actors feel confident, she said, “That makes me so happy.”
Short Works Festival:
Seeing everything onstage for the first time is also fulfilling. Most designers won’t see the entire ensemble together until the first dress rehearsal, which Gliessman revealed is kind of frightening sometimes. Despite the anticipation, he said, “It’s also kind of cool and exciting to wait for that reveal.”
The Wolves:
There is no question that being a designer takes dedication and lots of hard work. Without costume designers and many other students working behind the scenes, the productions wouldn’t be the same.
Into the Woods:
Short plays written, directed, designed, acted and produced by students. Showings are 7:30 p.m. Feb. 6, 7 & 8, and 2 p.m. Feb. 9 in McConnell Auditorium. A play by Sarah DeLappe about the experiences of a group of girls on a high school soccer team warming up to face the large and small obstacles of adulthood. Showings are 7:30 p.m. March 5, 6, 7, 12, 13 & 14, and 2 p.m. March 15 in Milo Smith Tower Theatre. Everyone’s favorite storybook characters brought together for a timeless, yet relevant, classic. Showings are May 8 – 17 in Milo Smith Tower Theatre.

The backbeat on edm STORY Wyatt Langstraat DESIGN Sloane Miller Rave with your fellow Wildcats Feb. 22 in the SURC Ballroom! For lovers of all things electronic dance music, there’s an exciting new event this quarter. Campus Activities and the DJs behind 88.1 The ‘Burg’s late-night show Electropolis bring you Electropolis Live, a free concert for CWU students. Four DJs — God King Apollo, Sp3rrow, LYNX, and P!xel_Panda — are excited to bring live-mixed electronic music to the Central campus like never heard before. “I’ve seen what music does for people,” said Kyle Gagnon, DJ name P!xel_ Panda. “Music is the one thing that everyone can just sit down and enjoy.” “Our styles really flow together,” said Matt Wiemals, better known as Sp3rrow. “For us to be able to play and do something live is gonna be really cool for everyone to see.”
Meet Your DJs! GOD KING APOLLO Apollo Whyte began listening to EDM in middle school. His first introduction to EDM was through Swedish DJ Basshunter. He started exploring other genres from there. In his senior year of high school, he got a cheap little DJ deck and began messing around with mixing songs. “I sort of played around with it here and there, but I never got super into it,” he said. “Then when I came to Central and joined The ‘Burg… word got to LYNX that I was an EDM DJ… and I’ve been doing it every week since.”
Whyte described his style as futurehouse, drum-and-bass, melodic dubstep, and Prague-house. “I’ll start with dance-pop and pop remixes and then I try to do a smooth transition over the period of an hour,” Whyte said.
SP3RROW
Matt Wiemals’ introduction to EDM came through a friend who showed him dubstep right when it was getting big. “I started DJing around eight years ago. I dove into the music and started listening to everything that I could,” Wiemals said. “Ever since, I’ve been captivated by learning how to influence a crowd with different types of EDM that there are and different types of music in general.” “I play music to have a party, that’s the goal,” Wiemals said when asked about his style of music. “I try to do a lot of mashups as well, so playing acappellas over dancier songs that people know and can sing along to. That’s the style that I like to do, a lot more party-esque. I love it. There’s nothing else I’d rather be doing.”
LYNX Ryan O’Connor, like his fellow Electropolis DJs, became interested in EDM when the dubstep wave hit in 2012. “There was a guy I listened to and I was like, ‘Whoa, this sounds really weird, this is kind of strange,’” said O’Connor. He was in the jazz band at the time, so EDM took a backseat to jazz music.
“I can like a little bit of everything, but what do I like playing?” he said. “Future-house is a genre I really got into in late 2017. It’s got funky rhythms, but it’s also slightly aggressive, so people can groove to it, but they can also really get down to it.”
P!XEL_PANDA Kyle Gagnon has been into EDM since freshman year of high school. He said once Skrillex got big, he was hooked on the genre. Like fellow DJ LYNX, Gagnon got his start making Launchpad remixes for Electropolis. Since last year, he has also been working on producing his own mashups. “I love the way you can have a song overlap,” Gagnon said. “I usually try and look for the entire song to fit together rather than segments. That’s what I love about producing.” Gagnon described his style as having glitch-hop, chip-tune and Eastern influence. “That is a really defining part of my genre that nobody else does,” said Gagnon. “Each [DJ] has their own, exact niche, and that’s definitely mine.” When asked what he looks forward to most in bringing EDM to Central in a live format, Gagnon said, “I’m excited to be able to show [our music.] It’s like the one style of music that everyone who listens to it agrees, to get the full experience, you have to do it together.”
“Then I came to college and I randomly heard Skrillex’s remix of [Avicii’s] ‘Levels’ one time,” said O’Connor. He was hooked. O’Connor generally uses Launchpads, MIDI controllers with pads that trigger different loops, sounds and other song elements. As he played more and more, he narrowed the focus of the genres he liked to play. 15
