Future You
It doesn’t all happen at once. Passing your classes and getting through finals all amounted to this moment: the day you get your diploma. Yet, what about the day after? Do you envision yourself dressed in a suit entering corporate halls or do you see yourself dressed in a uniform as a first responder? Maybe a teacher drafting together an Amazon list for a new classroom?
Whatever the case may be, the Wildcat Career Network is here to help make that happen. There are a variety of career fairs, Dress for Success events, resume seminars, and visiting keynote professionals that will help you feel prepared for the day after graduation.
Don’t get caught up in the web of current happenings without thinking about future you. Take a moment this winter to create an ideal mental picture of what your future looks like after you cross the big stage and then sit down and map out all the career building events you can attend to help you feel great about your life after graduation.
We wouldn’t want to make any more work for you so we’ve made it easy. Scan the QR code on this spread to visit our link tree. There you can find links to the CWU events calendar and a link to the Wildcat Career Network webpage. You can also follow us on Instagram to stay tuned for more career prep opportunities!
Onward and upward, Wildcats! Future you will be thankful.

Story by Sella Brown, Class of 2026 Design by Kyan Bauer, Class of 2026
College life can negatively affect students’ academic performance and overall well-being as students become adults and learn how to handle new, complex emotions. According to Jasmine Cottam, Health Promotion Coordinator at the CWU Wellness Center, nationally about 1 out of 10 students experience suicidal thoughts. This winter, the Wellness Center will host an event to support not only the 10% of students experiencing severe mental illness but to also help 100% of students develop a positive relationship with their mental health.
Fresh Check Day is a mental health promotion and suicide prevention event hosted on college campuses across the country. CWU’s Fresh Check Day, February 9 from 12-3 p.m. in the SURC, will be tailored to CWU students in need and those who want to understand how they can help others. According to the Fresh Check Day website, this event “aims to create an approachable and hopeful atmosphere where students are encouraged to engage in dialogue about mental health and helps to build a bridge between students and mental health resources available on campus, in the community, and nationally.”

Students can sign in and receive a passport to use at various booths for a chance to win prizes: Visit at least five to get a free slice of pizza; fill your passport and you’ll be entered into a prize raffle! All are welcome to visit the booths and participate in engaging activities at the level they choose.
Participating departments include the Veterans Center, Disability Services, Diversity and Equity Center, Student Counseling Services and others, as well as student-lead organizations. In addition, there will also be booths covering sexual assault and substance abuse prevention resources and where to find them.
No matter who you are, good mental health is something everyone should experience. No one should feel alone when they are experiencing feelings that are difficult to manage. Having a friend who promotes a safe environment to talk about your feelings is a big part of why the Fresh Check Day event was created. There are resources available and people who are willing to help. For additional information about Fresh Check Day, please visit freshcheckday.com. For information about additional resources, visit the Wellness Center in SURC 256.

Associated Students of Central Washington University. We’ve all heard of them, or at least seen them around campus. But what are they actually associated with? You may have your own ideas; we’re here to tell you what they really do and how their organization affects our school, our community, and the world at large. But, most importantly, you’ll learn exactly what this group can do for you.
We talked with three of the ASCWU officers to gain insight into what kind of real-world impacts they’ve seen since joining the association.
For President Luis Reyes, seeing the Wildcat Pantry thrive has been extremely rewarding. “[The Wildcat Pantry] gives access to resources that allow students to succeed,” said Reyes. Reyes believes in “human-to-human” connection and thinks it’s important that we care for one another when we can. ASCWU works closely with other organizations on campus to ensure that student dollars are being spent where they are needed most.
Cont.
Mariah Minjarez is the Director of Equity and Multicultural Affairs. For Minjarez, one of the most valuable things she has gained since joining ASCWU has been community and connection with her peers. “It really feels like a family,” said Minjarez. “Our goal every year is to make sure ESC (Equity and Services Council) is very collaborative and that we have those personal connections to each other.” Minjarez has seen many beautiful friendships flourish in her time here. Members of ASCWU and other departments don’t just attend one another’s meetings—they forge personal connections and are genuinely invested in the success of their fellow students. “It has been amazing to see marginalized communities and other groups building a community that ensures Central feels like home.”
ASCWU also offers a place for students to learn what it takes to be a leader who inspires others to become one themselves. “The biggest goal for me has been learning how to empower my colleagues so that they are the best student leaders that they can be,” said Joseph Burke, the Director of Governmental Affairs. The ability to lead is something that can aid students in their professional and personal lives. It’s a skill that can help inspire others to be their best and contribute to the world in a meaningful way.
ASCWU is more than an office here on campus. It is a place where students can develop as professionals, make a positive and lasting impact in their community, and gain skills that will carry them both in and out of the workplace. If you want to make an impact at Central and beyond, consider applying for various positions within ASCWU, or running for office in the next election!

Valentine’s Day is a day of admiration, love and friendship. It is a day of binge-watching rom coms, eating heart shaped candies, exchanging love notes, and celebrating love. Some of you might find yourselves rolling your eyes at this opener, and to that we say: give the upcoming V-Day Soiree a try, it may persuade you to think differently!
Imagine walking into the SURC Ballroom on Valentines Day instead of going out for an expensive dinner. As you step inside, you’re hit with a vibe as strong as lightning; the atmosphere is vibrant and inviting. You feel at ease knowing everyone else here is looking for the same thing; it could be that you find a new best friend or meet someone special. In a crowd of a hundred Wildcats, it is the perfect time to bottle up the nervousness and seize the opportunity to join a speed-friending activity.
Rumor has it that Cupid will be flying around as the special guest. Make sure to ask about the deep, hard-hitting stuff: What's your favorite color? Where did you grow up? What’s your major? Are you team Edward or Jacob? Exchange social media handles and make plans for a second date with your new friends after spending the evening getting to know them.
The V-Day Soiree is the best way to celebrate the day of love. You would be letting Cupid down if you didn’t attend. Relish in the love-themed décor, upbeat music and free snacks that will have you dying for another taste. You will walk out of the ballroom with countless memories, new friends and a satisfied sweet tooth.
So, whether you come alone to explore your odds at speed friending or come with a special person that makes your heart beat like the rain — everyone is welcome! This is the perfect opportunity for Wildcats to come together and celebrate their electric love!
The romcoms and candy will be waiting for you at home, so you can look forward to those as your very own after party. Make some plans, dress to impress and join Campus Activities for this annual event happening Tuesday February 14 at 7 p.m. in the SURC Ballroom. It is free for all CWU students. The V-Day Soiree will feel like lightning in a bottle; you won’t be able to let go once you’ve got it.

A Very Fat Tuesday
Story by Emma CrowE, Class of 2023 Design by Jaclyn Perry, Class of 2023
Mardi Gras at CWU
CWU’s Mardi Gras celebration, sponsored by Campus Activities, is being held on February 25 at 9 p.m. in the SURC Ballroom. With music from your very own campus DJ’s, it is sure to be a fun night! Celebrate the night away while indulging with treats, fun giveaways and 88.1 The 'Burg.
History of Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras, also known as Carnival, has a rich and interesting history. The holiday was initially a Pagan celebration of springtime and fertility. However, this changed when an influx of Christians entered Rome. Upon their arrival, the celebration was reworked as an event leading up to Lent, a 40-day-long season of fasting that usually begins on Ash Wednesday. Naturally, this celebration took place on Tuesday. It’s a time to listen to music and gorge on great food before the season of fasting begins. Everyone knows this celebration as Mardi Gras, French for “Fat Tuesday”.
The Meaning of Color
The colors of Mardi Gras (purple, green, and gold) don’t date back to the inception of the celebration. The renowned colors came along years later. It wasn’t until 1872 that the colors were selected to honor a guest of the King of Carnival in New Orleans. Each color has its own meaning: Purple represents justice, green represents faith, and gold represents power. Think about the meaning of the colors as you incorporate them into your Mardi Gras outfit this year.
Dressing for the Occasion
Mardi Gras outfits are known for being elaborate. Costume designers around the world spend all year working on costumes for clients. It’s never too early to start designing your Mardi Gras costume!
When coming up with your outfit, don’t forget a mask! Half the fun of a Mardi Gras ball is the secretive atmosphere the masks provide. Once used to conceal identities, it’s now a fun tradition to consider when prepping for the celebration.
It Isn’t Called Fat Tuesday for Nothing
A classic Mardi Gras treat is the King Cake, a circular cake with a mini baby figurine baked somewhere inside. The tradition is that if the figurine, which represents baby Jesus, is in your slice of cake, then you are crowned royalty that evening. Finding the figurine is a symbol of good luck and prosperity, the reward for finding the figurine in your slice may also vary depending on familial tradition and interpretation.
The Sound of Mardi Gras
You can’t have Mardi Gras without music! Celebrating Mardi Gras, odds are you will find trumpets and other brass instruments blazing through any parade or ball. Playing music in a jazz tune or other upbeat melodies are a major component of the celebration of spring and life.
New Orleans may ring familiar to you when you think of Mardi Gras. This is possibly because New Orleans is considered to have the world’s largest celebration. What once began as an elegant ballroom dance has evolved into parades and celebrations in the streets of New Orleans and beyond; even with Wildcats at Central Washington University.
