What in the World
Story and Design by Karly Heitman
Associated Students of Central Washington University. We’ve all heard of them, or at least seen them around campus. But what are they actually associated with? You may have your own ideas; we’re here to tell you what they really do and how their organization affects our school, our community, and the world at large. But, most importantly, you’ll learn exactly what this group can do for you.

We talked with three of the ASCWU officers to gain insight into what kind of real-world impacts they’ve seen since joining the association.
For President Luis Reyes, seeing the Wildcat Pantry thrive has been extremely rewarding. “[The Wildcat Pantry] gives access to resources that allow students to succeed,” said Reyes. Reyes believes in “human-to-human” connection and thinks it’s important that we care for one another when we can. ASCWU works closely with other organizations on campus to ensure that student dollars are being spent where they are needed most.
Mariah Minjarez is the Director of Equity and Multicultural Affairs. For Minjarez, one of the most valuable things she has gained since joining ASCWU has been community and connection with her peers. “It really feels like a family,” said Minjarez. “Our goal every year is to make sure ESC (Equity and Services Council) is very collaborative and that we have those personal connections to each other.” Minjarez has seen many beautiful friendships flourish in her time here. Members of ASCWU and other departments don’t just attend one another’s meetings—they forge personal connections and are genuinely invested in the success of their fellow students. “It has been amazing to see marginalized communities and other groups building a community that ensures Central feels like home.”
ASCWU also offers a place for students to learn what it takes to be a leader who inspires others to become one themselves. “The biggest goal for me has been learning how to empower my colleagues so that they are the best student leaders that they can be,” said Joseph Burke, the Director of Governmental Affairs. The ability to lead is something that can aid students in their professional and personal lives. It’s a skill that can help inspire others to be their best and contribute to the world in a meaningful way.
ASCWU is more than an office here on campus. It is a place where students can develop as professionals, make a positive and lasting impact in their community, and gain skills that will carry them both in and out of the workplace. If you want to make an impact at Central and beyond, consider applying for various positions within ASCWU, or running for office in the next election!
