This Lunar New Year marks the celebration for the Year of the Rabbit, which is the fourth Chinese Zodiac sign out of twelve. The twelve zodiac signs are made up of animals and divided into two categories: Ying and Yang. The first group of animals are raised, and the second group is made up of animals that are loved. In this case, the Rabbit falls into the category of loved animals.

Lunar New Year is a holiday widely celebrated in countries like China, Vietnam and South Korea in addition to groups of people that are influenced by Chinese culture. This is the time where participating citizens share their gratitude for the year's good fortune in prosperity and harvest. While practices vary depending on family traditions, this holiday will usually include celebrations through dance, food, song, and performance.

Each animal has its own meaning; the rabbit represents the moon, and holds the characteristics of someone who has confidence, strength, is goal-driven and a socializer.

If you’re looking for a way to learn more about this holiday, immerse yourself in a new culture through this event. If this holiday is already familiar to you, find a piece of home at Central’s Lunar New Year event brought to you by the Korean Student Association and the Chinese Students and Scholars Association.
