Welcome Back Wildcats! Welcome Back Wildcats! I hope your summer was full of fun and relaxation as we ramp up for a new year full of experiences and possibilities. As our journey begins I encourage you to consider three simple values: Engage, Promote and Support. Engage: Be attentive to those around you, acknowledge others with gracious intent and honor each interaction with respect and civility. Promote: Get involved in the Wildcat community, remain positive and demonstrate the “Wildcat Way. Actively participate in CWU events and activities. Support: Celebrate the accomplishments of those around you, listen intently and be solution-focused. Be responsive. Remember that we have the opportunity each day to invite honesty, humor, humility and humanity into our interactions with one another. Good luck this year and remember that I am always available to support your experience any way I can. Jeff Rosenberry, CWU Class of 2007 Executive Director, Student Involvement

Homecoming Week 2019 Story by Wyatt Langstraat Design by Matthew Conrardy
Homecoming week is an exciting time of the quarter! From football and volleyball games to a comedian and hypnotist, Central has tons of fun events for the proud Wildcat to attend. Be on the lookout all week for the various CWU departments, residence halls and Ellensburg businesses participating in the Homecoming Decoration Contest. Get out there, and have some fun! Weekend festivities kick off at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 10 when our CWU Volleyball team plays Montana State University Billings in Nicholson Pavilion. Come cheer on our players! Stick around after the game for “Talent in the Tropics,” the Residence Hall Association’s annual Central Talent Show, featuring a variety of acts from current Wildcats. Campus Activities is excited to welcome comedian Joel McHale on Friday, October 11. Best known as the quick-talking, rule-bending ex-lawyer Jeff Winger in the cult-classic NBC show “Community,” McHale has been making audiences laugh out loud for years. McHale has done it all, from acting roles in “A Merry Friggin’ Christmas,” “Blended” (with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore), “Ted,” and “The Informant,” to satirical coverage of pop culture news on E! Network’s “The Soup” and “The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale.” McHale also hosted the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in 2014 and the ESPYS in 2015. The show starts at 8 p.m. in the SURC Ballroom. Grab
your tickets because this is one comedian you will not want to miss! Directly after the show be sure to catch Wellington’s Wildfire, an annual tradition, at the Nicholson Pavilion parking lot at 9 p.m. There will be games, music, food, and, of course, the bonfire with smores! On Saturday, gather with your fellow Wildcats at 10 a.m. on the SURC Patio to prepare for the Wildcat bRUNch 5K hosted by University Recreation. Celebrate the opening of Central’s brandnew residence hall, Dugmore Hall, at the 10 a.m. ribbon cutting ceremony. It’s time for what you’ve been waiting for all week — the Homecoming football game! Snag your crimson and black gear, and get to Tomlinson Stadium early for the Wildcat Tailgate at 4:30 p.m. Enjoy food, win prizes, play games, and get ready for the car smash! The big game kicks off at 6 p.m. Bare your Wildcat claws, and make your way over to the field to cheer on your Central Washington Wildcats as they battle Azusa Pacific University! Win, lose, or draw, keep your wits about you after the game as hypnotist Chris Jones takes the stage at 10 p.m. in the SURC Ballroom. He has appeared on “America’s Got Talent,” where he successfully hypnotized Howie Mandel. He was also awarded Hypnotist of the Year in 2015. His interactive show promises to keep you at the edge of your seat! TICKETS: cwu.edu/tickets SCHEDULE: cwu.edu/homecoming

Central is serving up more than just candy this Halloween. In the days leading up to the spooky holiday, CWU will be hosting an array of activities to make sure you have a fun and safe time.

Don’t Dream it, Be it! Kick off the festivities on October 25 by doing the time warp and experiencing the live production of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at 10 p.m. This annual performance features a student shadow cast reenacting the cult classic as it plays on a screen in the background. If you think you’ll get off the hook by just sitting and watching the action, think again. Early-arriving audience members will receive goodie bags with all necessary provisions like toast, finger lights, a rubber glove, a script for call-outs, and rose petals so you can interact with the cast and immerse yourself in the show! Anyone new to the Rocky Horror experience can expect good humor, profanity and an outstanding time.
Zombies roam and horror abounds this Halloween More spine-tingling excitement ensues as Campus Activities presents the Haunting at Central. This annual event, taking place on October 26 from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m., will feature an assortment of exciting activities to keep you entertained all night long. There will be black light bowling, golf, and a dance party, so come get your glow on. In addition to a terrifying haunted house, you can enter the Zombie Zone, if you dare, where you will be geared with Nerf guns as you are tasked with completing challenges and escaping the zombie infested Recreation Center. Head down to the SURC and brace yourself for a night of fright! The 27th annual Boo Central takes place from 5-7 p.m. on Halloween day. CWU invites parents to bring their kids to the SURC Ballroom for an evening of fun, safe and inclusive Halloween activities. Student clubs and organizations will be planning Halloween-inspired games, face-painting, activity stations, candy prizes and giveaways. Parents are encouraged to dress up and join in on the fun as well! Keep an eye out for other events to attend like Escape the Haunted Career Center and Halloween Central, a concert hosted by the CWU Music Department. Don your costume and get ready for a ghostly great time.

Día de los Meurtos Story by Wyatt Langstraat Design by Meagan Curtis Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead in English, is a traditional Mexican holiday that celebrates the lives of those who have passed away. Though closely associated with death, the observers view the holiday not with sadness but with joy because their loved ones’ spirits are awake and visiting them. Originating with the indigenous peoples of Mexico, Spanish invaders adopted the celebration into the Catholic faith. During this integration, the holiday was compressed from its original two-week time period into a two-day event and moved from the beginning of summer to coincide with Halloween, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day, though Día de los Muertos holds no ties to Halloween. In fact, the spooky and foreboding sense associated with Halloween stands in stark contrast to the celebratory and joyous occasion that is Día de los Muertos. Celebrations of the event include the building of ofrendas, tiered altars where photos of the dead as well as food and beverages they enjoyed in life are left. For children who have passed, their favorite toys are offered at the ofrendas. Sugar skulls representing the deceased person decorate the altars, small skulls for children and larger ones for adults. Observers scatter bright orange
marigold flowers over the ofrendas and throughout graveyards to help guide spirits to their living family’s offerings.
Celebrate at Central If you’re looking to experience this time-honored tradition, the Diversity and Equity Center has you covered with Central’s annual Día de los Muertos celebration. All are welcome at this free event! Starting on, October 25, look for the vibrant sand tapestry created by Seattle and Oaxaca artist Fulgencio Lazo in the SURC Pit along with sugar skulls, marigolds, and an ofrenda. Honor a passed loved one by leaving their photo or other memento of theirs at the ofrenda set up in the SURC Pit. On November 2 at 5 p.m., join traditional Aztec dancers in a procession from the ofrenda in Dean Hall to the SURC East Patio. Carry a photo of your loved one in the procession, or set it on an ofrenda to honor them. The dancers will perform a ritual at the SURC to begin the event, then the main celebration begins at 6 p.m. upstairs in the SURC Ballroom! Make piñatas, bright sugar skulls, and paper flowers at the craft tables, put on temporary tattoos, enjoy scrumptious food from the vendors, and tap your feet to the beat of the mariachi band’s music. Don’t forget to stop by the photo booth before you leave for a picture to always remember this unforgettable event!

Explore Ellensburg Story by Wyatt Langstraat Design by Jenae Harris At first glance, Ellensburg might seem like a quiet town, but the truth is this city presents a unique experience for every Central student who lives here. Within minutes you can be fishing on the Yakima River or eating a meal in the downtown. With a little bit of time and effort, everyone can find something enjoyable to do here! Downtown Ellensburg offers a wide array of cultural draws, including various museums and art installations. A great way to jump in and experience the town is to participate in the First Friday Art Walk. Hosted by the City of Ellensburg, this monthly event takes participants on a tour of local art in all forms.
14
Venues range from traditional galleries and museums to non-traditional coffee shops and breweries with showcased art rotating month to month. Check out the City of Ellensburg Facebook page for more information. There’s no shortage of great food options in Ellensburg. From quaint little breakfast spots and delicious artisan pizza to classic burgers and shakes, there’s something to satisfy every taste bud. Nestled in a valley, surrounded on all sides by mountains and hills, Ellensburg is a great place to get outside and spend time in the fresh air. For an easier hike, follow Umptanum Road out of Ellensburg
about 10 miles. You’ll arrive at the trailhead for Umtanum Falls, a short hike through the woods ending with a magnificent view of the falls. For a more challenging hike, scale the Manastash Ridge trail, a four-mile roundtrip hike that elevates quickly, and be rewarded with a fantastic view of Ellensburg spread out below you. Scattered throughout Ellensburg, you’ll find beautiful city parks with lots of grass and trees. Play a game of baseball at Rotary Park. Share a picnic lunch with friends at North Alder Park. Catch one of the stunning sunsets Ellensburg is famous for up on Craig’s Hill by the water tower.
To cool off on those hot days, hit up People’s Pond, a popular lake near the Yakima River surrounded by forest. The waterfront park, officially called Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park, features a large grass lawn with plenty of space to soak in the sun along with a sand volleyball court and the pond itself to escape from the heat.
Day Drives If you’re looking to get out of town for the day, the hills and mountains surrounding Ellensburg provide the perfect opportunity. There are plenty of great day drives winding their way through the hilly landscapes just outside of Ellensburg. Heading
south out of town, Canyon Road down to north Yakima is a popular drive. Main Street turns into Canyon Road, which winds its way along the Yakima River and presents spectacular views of the ridges above and the river below. If you’re looking for a hike, you’ll find Rattlesnake Dance Ridge trailhead just past the first sharp left-hand hairpin turn. Further down the road, the Umtanum Creek Recreation Area features a picturesque suspension bridge and nice picnic spots. Taking Interstate 90 west to Cle Elum will get you there faster, sure, but it’s not the most scenic drive. State Route 10 takes you right near the farmland
and wind farms northwest of Ellensburg. Navigate the sweeping curves along the Yakima River and soak in the picturesque trees and ridgelines along the way. At the end, stroll through the small town of Cle Elum. The nearby town of Roslyn is connected to Cle Elum by the Coal Mines Trail, a five-mile trail beginning in Flag Pole Park that takes hikers near the historical coal mines that used to be active in the area. On state Route 903 past both towns, you’ll find various beaches along Cle Elum Lake, ideal for a dip on a warm day. Get out there and explore!
