Inside Student Government: ASCWU Elections Story by Miraclejoy “MJ” Curtis

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of CWU’s Student Government? Seven elected officers work to represent all students equally and fairly. These are Wildcats just like us. However, the uniqueness they all carry gives each of them the tenacity to take a stand and represent us. From facilities to academics, the ASCWU Student Government helps advocate for student concerns and creates programs to make the Central college experience more memorable. President Serves as the Chair of ASCWU Student Government and is a voting member of the board in situations of a tied vote. Serves as chief spokesperson for the Student Body. Executive Vice President Provides a budget forecast each Fall, oversees committees and appointments, provides a monthly summary of monetary activity, and sits on the S&A Committee. Fills in for President as needed. Vice President for Clubs & Organizations Your go-to person who handles recognition for student groups on campus! Acts as a liaison for clubs and organizations, and chairs the Senate of Student Organizations.

Vice President for Academic Affairs A resource for students who have ideas, issues and/or concerns regarding academics. Attends Faculty Senate, meets with the Provost and chairs Student Academic Senate. Vice President for Student Life & Facilities Manages Wellington! Chairs the Student Union and Recreation Advisory Boards helps coordinate the Dining and Wildcat Shop committees, and attends RHA meetings. Coming Home After War Story by Julia Moreno

Sebastian Junger describes himself as a person with one foot in the world of veterans and one foot in the world of civilians, and it’s a pretty fitting description.

“I’m not a soldier but I spent a lot of time with them. I feel like I can deconstruct the military experience to civilians and vice versa,” he said. “…I feel like I’m in a position to be able to say anything and be heard. I feel fortunate and I’m very, very protective of that status.”

His latest book, “Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging,” which will be the focus of his discussion on CWU’s campus this year, discusses how veterans feel when they come home from war. The book examines similarities between the war experiences of both 18th century Native Americans and current day soldiers, and explores the struggles of adjusting to “normal” life in communities.Junger explains how these adjustments can lead to feelings of alienation or mental health issues such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “(PTSD) seemed representative of a larger problem of alienation and disconnection that all of us in modern society suffer from. Not only in veterans but in everybody,” he said. “Veterans are kind of a vulnerable population. In some ways, they are the canary in the coal mine…We are all vulnerable to alienating effects of modern society.” Junger said he always wanted to be a writer, and was fascinated with writing about dangerous jobs. After his foray into the dangers of commercial fishing in his novel “The Perfect Storm,” Junger switched gears to tell stories of war as a correspondent.

Most of his experience reporting was on his own, covering civil wars. His first experience was in Bosnia in 1993. He went to Afghanistan in the mid-90s and again after 9/11, this time with American soldiers. He stopped reporting after his friend, photographer Tim Hetherington, died in Libya while covering the 2011 Libyan Civil War. The two had collaborated on a documentary called “Restrepo,” released to critical acclaim in 2010. “Particularly being with the American soldiers, I have a very, very close relationship with those guys. It opened me up emotionally. I was in my 40s and they (the soldiers) were in their 20s. I came out of that experience very emotional in interesting ways I didn’t expect, which was a good thing. It was painful sometimes but it was a good thing,” he said. “You grow up very fast in war and you can still do some growing up in your 40s and 50s. When you go to war, you’re going to change a lot. That affects the rest of your life.”

Family Weekend

Floating tables and psychic abilities will be in your future, Wildcats! Extraordinist Craig Karges will create a unique and exciting magic experience for you, your friends, parents and the community. Karges will kick off Family Weekend in the Student Union and Recreation Center Ballroom at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 12. “I think it’s going to be a really good show. (Karges) is not something we normally bring for Family Weekend. Everyone likes good entertainment and that’s what Craig has to bring,” said Alexis Everett, student events coordinator for campus activities and co-coordinator for Family Weekend. This isn’t Karge’s first time in Wildcat country and he said he’s always enjoyed performing for the CWU community. “It is always a great crowd and we have a lot of fun. I love playing Family Weekends because of the audience diversity — everyone from young siblings to grandparents. College was a special time in my life and I’m glad that I still spend a part of each year touring college campuses,” he said. Karges has been practicing magic since he was 12 and developed a show at the age of 16. That’s how he paid his way through college.

Karges refers to himself as an “extraordinist,” which he said describes the not so-ordinary show he puts on for audiences. His shows are based on audience participation and he said throughout the course of the show around 40 people will be involved. “I have always been fascinated by mystery and the unknown. And as a ‘mystery entertainer,’ I can help others experience the thrill of encountering a mystery. Albert Einstein famously said, ‘The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious.' I agree,” he said. “I love creating the feeling of mystery in an audience.”

Time to turn up and end this school year with a bang! Campus Activities is pulling out all the stops to bring you unforgettable entertainment for CWU’s annual Student Appreciation Day on May 25. Kick it outdoors with PNW hip-hop artists, DJ dance parties, MC battles, live art and food! Hip-Hop Flavor from the Pacific Northwest To kick things off, we’re welcoming Sky Movement, a Northwest-based music entertainment company, to present a Music Biz 101 panel with industry professionals and national artists. The company has produced and promoted events like Summer Jam and Dope Music Festival. Sky Movement’s Clemm Rishad is a Grammy nominee who has toured and opened shows for artists like Chris Brown. Rishad, along with R&B artist William Jordan, have earned industry credibility with their catchy hooks and melodies, collaborating with artists like Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill.

Additional Fun in the Sun What better way to welcome the summer months than with ice cold snow cones? The Wildcat Shop will be serving them up fast! Dining Services will also be serving up free barbeque to CWU students with their CWU ID. Non-traditional students are encouraged to join in on the fun with the Center for Diversity and Social Justice (CDSJ) on the Recreation Center east lawn for arts and crafts tables and family-friendly activities. It doesn’t matter how you define art or the elements that are wrapped within it, what matters is that it makes you feel something.

From classical arrangements to Broadway tunes, the collaboration with local businesses brings a variety of music to the streets of the town. One jazz group is even set to cap off the day by participating in the “Girls Night Out” event at the 420 Building.

Whether it takes you back to a favorite childhood memory or gives you a sense of connection and hope, powerful art evokes emotion and sparks a creative light within the community. Central students are managing to produce exactly these results across various departments as they pursue their creative endeavors. Fortunately for you Wildcats, they will showcase their artistic skills to the Ellensburg and Central community in full force this spring. Day of Music A crash! A boom! A…piano? Central Music is going into full swing this spring with their first ever “Day of Music,” and they’re set to blast their riffs from the rooftops on Thursday, April 13. With the Day of Music, music students will create community connections and learn what it takes to book their own shows and venue spaces—all while sharing their musical prowess with Downtown Ellensburg. “We truly believe in the power of music and in the beauty of sharing music with people around us,” said

“We simply cannot keep this blessing to ourselves,” Carroll said. “We want Ellensburg to be a part of what Central Music is doing on a daily basis.” Juried Student Art Exhibition: May 17 - June 4 Reception and Awards Ceremony, Wednesday, May 17, 5-7 p.m. (Awards at 6 p.m.) In Wildcat Country, our passion for art cannot be confined to a single sheet of paper. Instead it exists in the form of paintings, handcrafted sculptures and paper airplanes nose-diving from the ceiling in Randall. Students work quietly away on those pieces, spending hours day-in-and-day-out creating and shaping their artistic vision. While everyone in the department knows the talents of their students, now it’s time for them to show off their greatest works to the community in the Juried Undergraduate Student Art Exhibition. “I think [the exhibition] is

important for all students,” said Heather Horn Johnson, the gallery manager for the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery. “It features a creative aspect for students who are in the campus community.” From May 17 until June 4, everyone will get the chance to see these artistic masterpieces on display. Not only does this exhibition provide the community with the chance to escape for a moment and dive into the world of Central art, the show also allows students the chance to experience the professional elements needed in order to thrive as an entrepreneurial artist. All art pieces in the exhibit will be selected through impartial judging by Philip Govenar, a professor of painting and drawing at the University of Washington. Winners of the exhibition may receive cash prizes and could even make their mark on Central’s artistic landscape with the Student Union and Recreation Center’s (SURC) purchase award. Art selected in the purchase is installed and on display inside the SURC for the thousands of people who walk through the building every day. “I think a lot of the work is only seen by the artist’s eyes and it’s nice to have this for the public to see what we’ve been working so hard on,” said Crystal Hering, a senior art major and participant in previous juried exhibitions. “People are really awed by what students can do.”

Dear seniors, You did it! You really did it! Well, not quite, but you are almost there. Here’s to all of the sleepless nights, countless coffees… and discovering your passion here at Central Washington University. Now that your college experience is almost over, it’s time to transition to careers, grad schools, internships and new life lessons outside of the classroom. For those of you that have a little further to go, take notes from these seniors that are chucking up the deuces. We heckled seniors in the SURC for some advice, bucket list items and things every CWU student should do during their time on campus. We hope these parting words from seniors help all you Wildcats who are on a journey to find your passion at CWU.

Travel and keep building! Get involved, get out of your comfort zone. Find mentors and BE a mentor! Avery, Anthropology & Law and Justice: Definitely take advantage of all of the programs and clubs they have here. It helps you find what you love to do and learn about.

Alison, English and Lit: Be fearless. Join everything that interests you, even stuff that mildly looks cool. This is your time to become whoever you want and to make connections. No one is going to remember people who did nothing. Julia, Digital Journalism: Do an internship that will help you out, don’t take the easy way out. It will benefit you in the long run, you’ll either find out you love your major or you hate it. Put googly eyes on the wildcat. Party on, Garth Alyx, Graphic Designer: Find your passion and pursue it. Fight for it. Doing what you love will make you the happiest. For graphic designers: Push yourself on every project. Try to learn something new and try things (concept, styles, etc) that you might not normally do. Branching out and learning what does and doesn’t work for you will help you grow as designers. McKenzie, Digital Journalism: Take your passion and ignite it; don’t let anyone tell you your dreams are too big. There are so many loving and caring people on this campus, find them and hold onto them—they’ll be your Wildcat family for life.
