Campaign signs tacked up in academic buildings, students tabling in the SURC, and “Vote for Me” social media posts have declared campus-wide that it’s officially election season for the Associated Students of Central Washington University (ASCWU).
Giovanni Severino, this year’s ASCWU Student Government President, is very passionate about getting Wildcats to vote.
While this is an important time of year for the student candidates running for 2018-2019 office, this is an equally important time of year to make an impact through voting! Catalysts for Change ASCWU Student Government is made up of seven studentelected positions. These students advocate for change, whether it’s recognizing a unique new club or visiting the state capitol to lobby for legislative reform. They lead teams and special task forces to make decisions on a variety of topics that affect you directly, and promote equity and diversity through a variety of programs, both academic and social.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, PROTECTION B Y JA SO N MO R A LE S Student designers, models and coordinators are hyped to showcase their condom-based fashion designs at the fourth annual Condom Fashion Show this April. Colors, styles, and statements light up the stage for hundreds of attendees. Student designers take weeks of preparation to be ready for the show, and begin with 500 free condoms. CWU student designers Craig Chapo and Eva Briseño are looking forward to the challenge. When asked how they approached the design process, they said, “Research, Research, Research! Seriously, it takes a lot of research to design a garment made from condoms. We looked at other examples of condom garments and regular cloth garments and tried to combine both designs to come up with our own unique spin.” While getting the design on stage can take a lot of time, seeing the models wearing student fashions is very rewarding for the designers. “I would be lying if I said we aren’t nervous,” said Chapo. “Luckily we have each other for support, and my partner’s enthusiasm and bright smile always put me at ease. I feel like even if we
don’t win, just the fact we both got to work together and make something unique gives me all the satisfaction in the world.” Crowd Appeal In previous years, the crowd’s reaction to the show has been very high-energy. About 400 students attended last year’s Condom Fashion Show, and the Wellness Center expects attendance to grow. There is space to pack this year’s venue with 600 people. “Last year, the audience was phenomenal in their support and enthusiasm,” said Chapo. “We hope to have the same reception when we present our garment.” Focusing on Awareness The Condom Fashion Show is in conjunction with “Get Yourself Tested,” a national campaign created by MTV to break down stigmas behind condom usage and STI/STD testing. To encourage testing at CWU’s Ellensburg campus, the Wellness Center will offer free tests on April 10 and 11. Join the Wellness Center as they break down stigma in the most fashionable way.

ORANGUTAN CONSERVATION B Y MIKAYL A K IME RY Meeting a world-renowned conservationist is a dream to most. Thanks to the CWU Primate Awareness Network (PAN) and Orangutan Foundation International (OFI), this dream is becoming a reality with “An Evening with Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas.” Much like Dian Fossey was known for her research with gorillas and Jane Goodall for her groundbreaking work with chimpanzees, Galdikas is the leading expert on orangutans. “Since the 1970s, Dr. Galdikas is the only person who has continuously studied orangutans in nature,” said Dr. Lori Sheeran, Director of CWU’s Primate Behavior and Ecology program. “Thanks to her, we know what we know about this rare ape.” Dr. Galdikas’ visit to CWU is a rare opportunity to learn about and advocate for orangutan conservation. One Night, but a Lifetime of Impact Dr. Galdikas will share stories and experiences from her research in the field, as well as explore current issues facing orangutans today.
Before the keynote address, guests are invited to a reception where they can meet with Dr. Galdikas and learn about palm oil production, the natural history of the orangutan, and endangerment issues. Guests can even signup to sponsor an orangutan’s rehabilitation for release back to the forest! Losing Natural Habitats to Palm Oil Production “Palm oil is the most rapidly expanding agricultural product,” shared Jake Funkhouser, Primate Behavior graduate student and President of PAN. “It’s mostly being found on these island countries where orangutans are endemic. So when we burn that forest, there’s nowhere else for them to go.” Because this is the easiest way to clear land for palm oil plantations, and orangutans are slow moving, they struggle to get out of the way. As a result, they often come to rehabilitation centers with substantial trauma and injury. It is a global conservation issue, and Dr. Galdikas has devoted her life to advocating for these intelligent yet critically endangered creatures.
Advocating for Orangutans the Wildcat Way When we are armed with knowledge, we can make a difference in our communities and in the world. Wildcats can combine efforts with the CWU PAN, read nutrition labels to avoid palm oil products, and become an advocate for orangutans with conservationists like Dr. Galdikas. “I think it’s incredibly important that our students are taking the time to learn about what they can do for conservation and nature in general,” said Funkhouser. Taking care of the Earth starts with us, so when will you decide to take action?

Your five-year-old brother says he drew a picture of a dog that flies, and then ate his crayon once he finished. Your family is driving up to Central, and as much you might be embarrassed by them, you actually can’t wait for them to arrive. This is happening, so what do you plan to do this weekend?

THANK YOU, WILDCATS B Y MIKAYL A K IME RY Despite being the shortest quarter, winter felt like one long Monday. Let’s be real, the senioritis is setting in and everyone is tired of the gray weather, but with spring, we can look forward to a welldeserved break and end-of-year celebration. Student Appreciation Day is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a day to appreciate all of the hard work that Wildcats have done year-round. Throughout the day, students can expect free food, giveaways, and activities put on by many CWU clubs and organizations. Ted Wolfe, one of three student programmers for the event, couldn’t have said it better: “[Student Appreciation Day is] a fat celebration that we throw for our students.” That being said, kick off your Sunday shoes and save the date for this year’s festival. Hip Hop Rodeo
Release stress through dance and music at the high-energy Hip Hop Rodeo. Catch student DJs setting the mood for breakdancing, dance-offs and rap battles. Four judges will score the diversity of talent, and all Wildcats are encouraged to participate and celebrate the PNW’s hip-hop culture.
Eddie Rodriguez, coordinator and member of the Hip-Hop Central club, is looking forward to continuing the tradition, stating that it’s compelling to have a “representation of hip-hop culture in rural Ellensburg.” Rodriguez expects an even larger turn out than last year, emphasizing that while it’s a really fun time, it’s also a way for students to identify with hiphop culture and unwind at the end of the year. For the first time in Student Appreciation Day history, Campus Activities is opening the evening stage to student DJs. Auditions will take place in April, and students will select their favorite DJs to play before performer Marc E. Bassy. Bassy, who is currently performing a national tour, will bring his sultry hip-hop/R&B music to the late-night stage to woo hearts and get the bass bumpin’ (pun intended). He has music video views in the millions and beats that you can’t help dancing to, so you won’t want to miss his free live show.

AUTHENTIC POLYNESIAN CULTURE B Y E R IC R O SA N E When Nicholas Aumua began his freshman year at CWU, he never thought he’d be coordinating a Polynesianthemed event that over 1,000 people would attend. “It’s been growing every year,” Aumua said. “Advertisement has been through the roof and everyone is talking about it.” Back then, he assisted with the inaugural event which was showcased at Parade of Nations. Now, over 100 people help put on PolyFest every year. Celebrating Culture & History Whether you’re new to campus or you’re graduating this spring, you have probably heard the buzz surrounding PolyFest, CWU’s annual celebration of Polynesian culture, food and dance. At 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29, bring your friends to the Science Lawn for seasoned short-ribs, slow-cooked kalua pork and savory mac salad at PolyFest’s annual barbeque. PolyFest volunteers look forward to serving up Polynesian flavors to hundreds of guests at this annual event.
Following the barbeque, CWU students will perform authentic Polynesian dances and entertainment pieces in the SURC Ballroom at 7 p.m. There will be choreographed routines from many different Polynesian cultures, such as Samoan, Tongan and Tahitian. Aumua, president of Poly Central and PolyFest event coordinator, is one of the 50 dancers set to perform at this year’s PolyFest. Aumua shared that PolyFest gives Polynesian students the opportunity to bring a little bit of home to Ellensburg. Remaining Authentic & Inspired Excitement was built for this year’s PolyFest almost directly after last year’s ended. The performers and club members have been working on their dance routines since the beginning of fall quarter. “What really helps is that these students know these dances and they’re willing to teach until it’s compact and ready,” Aumua explained. Thanks to Aloha Kitchen, who will cater the barbeque
for the first time, PolyFest programmers will be able to focus on the performances. Freestyling is an important outlet of expression for Polynesian performers. “We just base our ideas off of [freestyling], and if it fits we go with it,” Aumua said. The student programmers and Poly Central club members plan to make this the best PolyFest to date. “We’ll make sure that the food is on point and that it’s something everybody likes,” Aumua said. “We’re going to make sure that the dances are equally as engaging as they are fun and that this is the best event that you can go to for free.”
