EXPLORE NEW CULTURES AT PARADE OF NATIONS Feb 20 • 6PM • SURC Ballroom • Free Story by DAISY HERNANDEZ Design by MEAGAN CURTIS
At some point in our lives, we all daydream of our future travels. Some of us might even have a Pinterest board with all the places we wish to visit. Whether it’s imagining stepping in the sands of the beautiful beaches of the Philippines, dreaming of swimming in the clear blue waters of the islands of Polynesia, or sight-seeing in the cities of Japan, we all have wished we could take a spontaneous vacation. What if I said, we could experience countries from all around the world, without ever leaving Ellensburg? The annual Parade of Nations brings together students and community members to share our
traditions, and welcomes all to experience the art of storytelling through cultural performances. On February 20, experience the vibrant colored dresses of dancers from the Folklorico club, hear the noise of islanders chanting “cheeehooo,” and feel the ground rumble as the Central African Student Association battles in step dancing. Student programmer Destiny Towery believes Parade of Nations has a cultural impact on the audience. She said, “It’s not just living your history, it’s living your present,” referring to the event as an outlet for everyone to re-live their embedded roots of their family’s past.
As a college town, Ellensburg is the perfect place to meet people from all different backgrounds. CWU has received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award for multiple years, and students of color make up 33 percent of the university population. For more than a decade, the Diversity and Equity Center has hosted the student-initiated event Parade of Nations with the help of our amazing clubs and organizations. Represent your culture by signing up before January 10 in Black Hall 101.

USE SOCIAL MEDIA FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE WITH SHAUN KING Feb 25 • 6PM • SURC Ballroom • Free for students • $10-15 GA • cwu.edu/tickets Story by DAISY HERNANDEZ
Design by MATTHEW CONRARDY
It’s no secret that retweets, likes, and shares are part of our daily lives. As college students we often become obsessed with the new Ariana Grande song (#thankunext), Chrissy Teigen’s viral jokes, or Kanye West’s random rants on social media. However, there’s a completely different side to social media that is used for more serious topics like social activism. We’ve seen the power of social media when content goes viral, but how to do we make real social change after we’ve clicked “post” or “retweet?” Activist Shaun King uses social media to engage with almost 4 million followers, spreading a message of social equality across the globe. King is a social and political activist within the Black Lives Matter movement who utilized Facebook in search of the men who assaulted DeAndre Harris during the 2017 Unite the Right white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The uploaded video received 2.5 million views and 6 thousand comments, successfully identifying and bringing to justice the perpetrators, Daniel Borden and Alex Michael Ramos.
In addition to his digital presence, King is a columnist for the Intercept and the WriterIn-Residence at Harvard Law School’s Fair Punishment Project. He is also a former journalist for the New York Daily News. King inspires people all over the country to stand up for social justice. He has been invited for speaking engagements at 100+ college campuses, jails and prisons across 35 states, and was awarded the inaugural Humanitarian Hero honor at the 2018 BET Awards. King is bringing his message of social justice and equity to Central Washington University on Feb. 25. He will share how to use our voice to make changes on campus, as well as how to spark change through digital and social media. He will also connect past historical events to modern day issues to help students and community members gain awareness and influence justice. If you want to become a skillful digital media activist, this is the event to attend.

DISCOVER RADICAL SELF-LOVE
Feb 28 • 7PM • Spoken Word Event McConnell Auditorium • Free for students $7 GA • cwu.edu/tickets Story by EMILY MASSETH Design by KAITLYN KURISU Body positivity: it’s a buzzworthy phrase we’ve heard often in the last few years, typically used to celebrate body image and acceptance. Yet here we are in 2019, still struggling to accept ourselves and each other in a photo-edited, Instagram-worshipped world. Though “body positivity” may have started out as a movement to help everyone come to peace with their bodies, it only scratches the surface when the media continues to highlight traditional archetypes of beauty. What if we told you there is a woman who strikes down superficial notions of body positivity, and instead professes “radical self-love”?
Award winning poet, author, and social activist Sonya Renee Taylor is changing the conversation around our bodies, starting with demystifying the terms “body positivity” and “radical self-love.” Radical self-love “is about the relationship not only with our bodies, but the bodies of others,” comments Taylor from her 2017 Ted Talk, “Bodies As Resistance.” “Every time you call truce with your body, you interrupt a system of violence and power that profits off of yourself hate,” she said. Taylor believes this idea of radical self-love allows you to use your body as an everyday act of resistance. What started out as a spoken word poem transformed into a digital phenomenon. In 2011, Taylor founded The Body is Not an Apology (TBINAA), an educational website promoting radical self-love and body positivity. Taylor later penned a book by the same name, in which she explores racism, violence, discrimination, sexism, and self-love in relation to our bodies.
“ EVERY TIME YOU CALL TRUCE WITH YOUR BODY, YOU INTERRUPT A SYSTEM OF VIOLENCE AND POWER THAT PROFITS OFF OF YOUR SELF HATE.” On February 28, Sonya Renee Taylor will bring her radical self-love, social justice, and expertise from her TBINAA website and book to CWU. Attend Taylor’s meet-andgreet book signing from 4-5 p.m. in the SURC, then experience a special spoken word event featuring Taylor. Join the movement to make peace with our bodies, and create an opening for a more just and equitable world.

LEAH MOBLEY VP LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS Leah is a liaison between the CWU student body and the legislature in Olympia, WA. She lobbied for opened educational resources, which could lead to educational grants and cheaper textbooks. MAURICE WATKINS VP EQUITY & COMMUNITY AFFAIRS Maurice has helped develop different resources for students, one of them being the Diversity and Equity Center move into Black Hall 101. This multicultural space is a safe and inclusive area for you to hang out, meet, and study.
