to be guaranteed more success in certain areas, across campus, [and] better representation,” says Rojas.

Design by Matthew Conrardy In our generation, it seems like voting has become a buzz word. Social media platforms are filled with political discussions, while “I voted” stickers overflow our feeds. However, there’s a good reason why voting has gained a new importance within college communities. Voting is the only way our voices and demographic will be represented across platforms. At CWU, voting for your student government representatives is just as important. We all come from different backgrounds, and we all have different needs that must be addressed. That is why it’s so significant to vote for the students that will speak up for our issues. Edith Rojas, current Associated Students of Central Washington University (ASCWU) president and first Latina president understands the significance of representation through voting. “When the students start actually paying attention and being picky about who they want in office, you are going

ONLY

Voting for ASCWU elections can move the university in new directions for the upcoming year. Rojas explains that they have the funds to provide multiple opportunities and activities for students, but the people in office advocate for what the students request. “If they don’t say anything then we don’t know how to make anything better,” says Rojas. Make an impact for the next school year by voting in the primary and general election this spring.

CWU hosts 11th annual Rock Against Rape

6

From power chords to powerful stories, Rock Against Rape provides sexual assault prevention education in ways that break tradition and promote awareness. Now in its 11th year, the signature event from CWU’s Wellness Center will kick off at 5 p.m. April 23 in the SURC Ballroom. The program aims to educate the CWU and Ellensburg communities about sexual violence and how individuals can both prevent assault and support victims.

Kristen Perry, CWU’s violence prevention and response coordinator, says that the event fosters a greater understanding of the effects of sexual assault in our communities. For example, last year BSU and EQuAL each hosted a booth showing how sexual assault affects the Black and LGBTQ communities. The local victim advocacy organization ASPEN and SANE nurses from Kittitas Valley Healthcare will also be on hand, as will CWU Police.

It’s a difficult topic, but information booths and live music encourage conversation and create a fun, inclusive atmosphere. Clubs, organizations, campus and community services will be on hand with activities that highlight pertinent information and statistics. Student musicians, selected through an audition process, will play throughout the evening. The headlining act, Seattle artist Zhanea June with Mach X, will take the stage at 7 p.m.

“By going to each booth, students will learn a lot about sexual assault, how we can end it, and help a friend,” said Perry. “Plus, they’ll have an opportunity for take aways such as coozies, stickers and shirts.” Student performers can register their interest in the Campus Activities office, SURC 263. Auditions will be a closed event on April 11 at 7 p.m. in the SURC Theatre. For more information, email campusactivities@cwu.edu or call 963-3315.

INTERNET YELLER, AUTHOR

Diversity Awards Speaker

Story by Daisy Hernandez

Design by Kathleen Anderson

Diversity Awards Each year, Central Washington University recognizes students, community members, faculty and staff members who go above and beyond their commitment to diversity. On May 8, these individuals will be celebrated for their contribution to effective changes, demonstration of consistent engagement, and support for inclusive environments. This year’s keynote is writer, speaker and “Internet Yeller” Ijeoma Oluo. Based in the Seattle area, Oluo was listed in “The Root 100 Most Influential African Americans” in 2017, and named as one of the “Most Influential People in Seattle” by Seattle Magazine. Her work focuses on race, identity, social justice, feminism, social and mental health, and has been featured in The Washington Post, NBC News, Elle Magazine, TIME, the Guardian, The Stranger and other notable publications.

8

When asked what she looks forward to sharing at the ceremony, Oluo says, “Getting people to use the space they are in, and the field that they are studying, to really stretch past career boundaries – to become more inclusive and more equitable.”

Writing the Talk Oluo understands that talking about race can be difficult, especially in a predominantly white environment. So, Oluo drew from her professional and life experiences to write the New York Times best-selling book, “So You Want to Talk About Race.” “One of the main reasons I decided to write the book was because I would hear people from everywhere that were just having trouble talking about these very specific issues,” says Oluo. “I wanted to create something that people who wanted to have a really productive conversation about these topics could reference.”

“There are a couple of things that help me talk about race,” she adds. “The first is realizing that it’s a privilege to get to talk about. Everything I talk about, there’s always another person of color who really feels like they can’t.”

Oluo uses her background and journalism experience to stand up for inequality. She encourages students of color to become writers and tell stories from their point of view, because it’s valuable and worthy for all.

Putting Words into Action

“Write and write and write and know that you are helping rectify the harmful imbalance in our journalism,” says Oluo. Even if it isn’t through professional writing, the truth from minorities deserves to be heard. Life experiences are crucial learning strategies and they should not be silenced just because of the color of someone’s skin.

Talking about race is just the first step. It’s what happens after the talk that matters. Students need to realize the issues that each group is facing and work together to overcome them. “Spend some time within your group, studying and recognizing the way white supremacy has orchestrated separation of groups of color,” says Oluo. “My career would be nothing without my authenticity,” she adds. “I know that what has been denied people of color in pop culture and in our journalism and in our news, is our authentic voice.”

MAY 10 - 12

Story by Emily Masseth Design by Hailey McGraw

The snow has finally melted, the skies are blue, and the sun is shining. It is finally spring quarter, which means we are closer to the end of the year. It feels like just yesterday our families were helping us move in and saying goodbye! Although we often come to college to become independent young adults, we can’t help but miss our loved ones. This spring, overcome that homesick feeling with family, laughs, and adventure at CWU’s longstanding tradition of Family Weekend. Whatever family means to you, bring them to campus and enjoy a fun-filled weekend full of activities and new memories made.

••• Family Weekend is a chance to engage in fun activities with your friends, family, and loved ones. Register at bit.ly/cwufamilyweekend to participate in more awesome events, and share your Wildcat pride! #CWUFamily

Between the Family Weekend main events, fill up some extra time by showing your parents what it truly means to be a Wildcat. Below is a checklist of some popular things to do in Ellensburg. Share the Wildcat pride with your family by checking off some of these iconic activities:

Student Appreciation Day One particular day out of the year will have you squirming on the edge of your seat while you sit in some of your final days of classes. On May 23, your phone will be blaring as new social media posts arrive hyping the day’s events. After class, you’ll soak up the sunshine and smell the outdoor barbeque flavors mixed with the sweet spring breeze. You’ll meet up with friends and enjoy a day like no other.

HIP HOP RODEO VOL. 3 The activities will take place all day long at the Student Recreation Sports Complex on May 23 from 2- 10 p.m. The non-stop fun will include the Hip Hop Rodeo coordinated by CWU’s Hip- Hop Central club. You won’t find horses and cowboy hats here, instead you will experience a turn table

showcase, MCs battles, open dance floors and break-dancers from around Washington who come together to embrace the culture of hip hop. “Hip Hop culture is an outlet for expression that is available to all individuals and includes everyone in this world,” said lead organizer EDY SLICK. In addition, local artists will create and sell graffiti art and merch.

CWU INTRODUCES “WILD FEST” Wild Fest will bring festival vibes to our very own campus. Wild Fest will include inflatable bouncy houses like an obstacle course, human foosball, a boxing ring, bungee run, sumo suits, and hoop shot. Yard games such as life-size Jenga, Yahtzee, corn-hole and archery tag will also be available for everyone to play and have fun! Monster Energy will add a boost

of energy to your long day by passing out free drinks. In addition to a free meal provided by dining services, your sweet tooth will be cured with ice cream and snow cones. Be one the first 1,000 students to attend the event and you will get a free t-shirt to commemorate the day. Bring blankets to hang out with friends while you listen student musicians and Seattle bands including bed. and DoNormaal. For Wild Fest’s main concert, you can expect an up-and-coming music headliner that will have the whole crowd cheering.

SAVE THE DATE! FOLLOW HYPE FOR DETAILS! Follow Campus Activities and CWU Hype to discover how to get involved with the big event, including a student “call for artists” to perform (see page 21), special giveaways and more.

WHAT DOES

IDENTITY MEAN TO YOU? Story by Emily Masseth Design by Kaitlyn Kurisu What does identity mean to you? Identity is the idea of individual characteristics that make up a person. For many people we often notice the characteristics that make us different from one another, but it is the similarities that can bring us together in community. CWU Pride Week: Pride Without Borders plans to do just that! Pride Without Borders helps transcend everyone’s differences to connect as one. You may be a part of the Economics club, the Basketball team, the Black Student

14 14

Union, or another group on campus, but wherever you come from, this is a chance to be proud of your identity and be a part of the celebration. This is an “inclusive experience for anyone who is proud of where they come from and who they are,” said EQuAL member Meghan Hoeye. “We want to introduce other LGBTQIA+ members in other communities [on campus].” Pride Without Borders is not only a celebration, but recognition of what has been accomplished throughout history and what still needs to be done. “We have come so far, but we are not done writing our story,” said EQuAL member Alyson Bennett. EQuAL wants our CWU community to be a part of this story by participating in the week’s events. On Tuesday, join the conversation through a panel discussion and “Queer & A.” This will give CWU

students and the Ellensburg community to grow in conversation about being a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. People from different backgrounds and walks of life are invited to participate in CWU’s Pride Week. Pride Without Borders will be held May 27 through June 2.

THE HISTORY OF PRIDE Pride Month was established to appreciate the impact of LGBTQIA+ individuals, advocates, and allies. June was chosen as Pride Month to commemorate the riots held by members of the LGBTQIA+ community against a police raid on June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. The riots helped pave an uproar for the modern fight for LGBTQIA+ rights, thus dedicated June as Pride Month.
