UFA Cattle College

The UFA Cattle College is a series of educational sessions that will be held throughout the year in various locations across Alberta. This January, we’re gearing up for calving season by introducing Lucy & Lou: a new, state-of-theart bovine simulator that enables agricultural students and members of the beef industry to gain practical experience without causing discomfort or injury to a live animal. It’s the only simulator of its kind that is capable of duplicating complications caused by calving. To sign up, you will need to contact the closest local UFA Farm and Ranch Supply store as listed to the right. RSVP is required to ensure we have sufficient space. Reserve your space today.

Tips on Scours

Calf Scours are most common in calves under 10 days of age. They are usually caused from a combination of factors, including stress (from the cold or overcrowding), bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and inadequate nutrition. Symptoms include weakness, dehydration and depression. Prevention and treatment of scours is critical as death can occur quickly in an affected animal.

Prevention methods

Treatment options

• Vaccinate the cow against disease and ensure adequate nutrition prior to calving.

• Intervene and isolate calf from the rest of the herd if it shows signs of illness.

• Avoid calving in muddy and manure-filled areas. Supply clean and dry bedding, as well as shelter.

• Provide extra care for weak calves.

• Avoid overcrowding in pens and calving areas. Calve heifers and cows separately when possible – maximum of 20 heifers per acre.

• Replace loss of body fluids with electrolytes, such as sodium chloride, potassium, and bicarbonates.

• Minimize stress on newborn calves. Key stress factors include: insufficient energy supply, cold, damp, and windy weather and crowded conditions.

• If it is identified that scours is caused by bacteria, such as E. coli, administer antibiotics.

Nutritional Information

Calving

Post-Calving

• A cow needs to be healthy and strong to give a calf the best chance of survival. She helps the calf stand and provides crucial colostrum for the calf.

• Good nutritional management of postpartum cows is essential. It maximizes calf growth and re-breeding, and improves next year’s calf crop.

• Healthy forage (e.g., feed grazing forages in good weather or baled hay when there is snow cover), good feed, minerals and supplements for cattle are needed in preparation for calving.

• The nutritional needs of cows increase by 2535% after calving compared to late gestation. • Cows that have been fed high-energy balanced diets from calving until breeding come into heat earlier and have higher pregnancy rates than cows fed adequate energy.

• During the last trimester, the fetus grows rapidly, which places increasing nutrient demands on the cow.

• Body condition score (BCS) at calving and at the beginning of the breeding season greatly impact reproductive performance.

• Cold weather also increases the cow’s nutrient requirements.

• Energy- and protein-deprived cows are less likely to cycle early and conceive and retain early pregnancies.

• Inadequate winter rations can lead to cows in poor body condition. This means an insufficient amount of colostral immunoglobulin will be available to the calf, leaving them less protected from disease.

• ProStock® minerals and supplements help maintain body condition and health.

• ProStock® protein and protein tubs help maintain body condition and health.
