Time flies, especially when you’re having fun. It seems like just the other day that we were all panicking about the turn of the Millennium and how our lives would be turned upside down with computers failing … and here we are, fifteen years down the track and we’re about to start work on the issue that will celebrate the conclusion of six fantastic years of My Wedding magazine! Time is a funny thing though. When you’re a kid and hanging out for school holidays, Christmas and Easter, the days seemed to drag and weeks seemed like an eternity. As we grow older, we start to realise that time is all we have … and it usually speeds by a lot faster than we’d really like it to. My late dad was always going on about the preciousness of time and implored me not to wish my life away each time I said something like: I wish it was already my birthday, or I can’t wait to leave school. While reflecting on the passage of time, I realised that anyone planning a big event will usually find themself in a quandary. On one hand, they can’t wait for the big day to arrive so that all their planning and hard work can pay off and they can relax and enjoy the day for what it is. However, on the other hand, there’s often so much to be done and so many list items to tick off, that brides and event planners often long for just a few more hours in the day or days in the week to fit it all in. Deadlines are my personal quandary …. as the team puts each issue together, I long for the day the new issue comes off the presses so that I can see all the hard work come together. Yet, the to-do list on each issue is a frightening beast, especially when you add in time for shoots, meetings, site visits, wedding shows, product launches, online endeavours and the rest. I find that without a proper plan, things fall apart rather quickly. My to-do list is a constantly moving beast as I shift items around, depending on their importance. I implore anyone planning an event to start keeping a comprehensive diary. I’d certainly be lost without mine! As always,

U N V E I L I N G T HE V E I L By Anita Turner-Williams
One of the most beautiful accessories a bride can wear is a veil. It is one of the oldest bridal accessories around the Middle Ages they were worn to protect the bride from evil spirits. Nowadays veils serve many other purposes; with a veil, you are adding drama, elegance, softness and balance to your look. This seemingly simple snippet of fabric can do wonders for accessorising and, if chosen with care, can become a defining element of your bridal look. The first thing to think about when considering a veil is how it will compliment your dress. The style of your gown should be the deciding factor on whether or not you wear a veil and, should you choose to wear one, the cut of the veil should be determined with care. For example, if the back of your gown has been designed to wow, you’re not likely to want to shield it from view with a long-trailing veil. If you have a gown with a detailed back, chances are you’ll either go for a small hair accessory or nothing at all. It’s important to be aware that this will vary from gown to gown and is best decided upon while trying on the finished dress so that you can see for yourself what it will look like on the day. This will also help with determining the finer details about the veil, such as trimmings and decorations. For an added touch, veils can be edged with ribbon or lace and decorated with hand-crafted fabric flowers or diamantes to emulate the detailing of your gown and add extra flourish to your look. Once you’ve decided to wear a veil, the next thing to think about is the fabric the veil is made from. To best compliment any gown, veils should be made in the finest of tulles, either of silk or nylon. Some veils usually those found online - are made of net, which is coarse, stiff and generally unflattering. You need to be wise to the fact that there are different qualities when searching both in-store and online. Aside from complimenting the gown you are wearing, the style of your wedding can also be enhanced by a
veil. Different types of veils can play a dramatic role in embellishing the atmosphere of the era that inspires your look and your wedding. Vintage-themed weddings in particular are hugely popular and well-suited to veils, though the particular style varies with the decade. A simple gown, as seen in the seventies, will be stunning with a lace edge, whereas layered short veils echo the fifties. Most brides seeking a modern look tend to opt for simple and long. This style is commonly favoured over other styles as it will work best, flatter and add elegance and drama to most types of gowns and weddings. Every year, at least two or three of my brides will come in with their family veil. Often it was worn by Mum or Nana and is truly beautiful, (some bring in veils that were bought from my mum, Vinka!). It may be a little worse for wear with a few holes, but these vintage veils (which are usually embroidered) bring a very special family connection to the wearer and cause a few happy tears! The veil is of course a hair accessory, so naturally your hairstyle will have to form a part of your discussion. Some important questions to consider include whether or not to wear your hair up or down, and how to fasten the veil. Most veils are attached with a comb, while more traditional styles such as the Spanish mantilla are draped over the head and secured with pins or hair clips. Choosing whether or not to wear a veil and further deciding on the right one for you is a surprisingly weighty choice that can take many by surprise. If you are having trouble in making a choice, the best advice is to keep an open mind and talk it through with your gown designer. With the help of their experience you’ll end up with a veil that suits you perfectly. Ultimately, remember that the veil is a prop that is there to make you look and feel like the bride of your dreams – you shouldn’t settle for anything less, and your photographer will love you for it!

A NYONE F OR T ENNIS ? TENNIS AND DIAMONDS HAVE VERY LITTLE IN COMMON. SO WHY IS THIS TIMELESSLY ELEGANT BRACELET CALLED A “TENNIS BRACELET”?
In reality, it was never really meant for playing tennis. It does, however, owe its name and popularity to the former World # 1 tennis player, Chris Evert. While playing a tennis match in 1987, the bracelet fell off her wrist and the game was interrupted so that she could retrieve it. The rest is history. The diamond tennis bracelet is the ultimate classic jewellery item - a row of diamonds set close to each other and linked with a flexible serpentine-like chain. The chain can be made out of any of the precious metals, namely white gold, yellow gold or platinum. It is ideally worn loosely around the wrist, hanging gracefully like a drape. Its simplicity and elegance makes it very versatile as an accessory to just about any outfit, from simple everyday wear to a breathtaking wedding dress or evening gown. The most popular style of tennis bracelet comes with round brilliant cut diamonds set in the classic 4-claw setting. The bezel setting is also fairly common, and equally beautiful. Although less popular, they do come set with an array of fancy shape diamonds, including princess and oval, sometimes even a combination of diamond shapes. As coloured gemstones have become more fashionable, the tennis bracelet has kept pace, and now often sport blue sapphires, rubies or emeralds. Gemstones can also make it more affordable.

THE INVITATIONS • Hand lettering and calligraphy is a pretty hot ticket across the design world right now. With it’s sweeping nature, it’s a very romantic aesthetic and with more eclectic styles opening up it can still be a modern choice. • You’d be hard pressed to find anyone in this day and age that hasn’t succumbed to the selfie phenomenon, and couples are using creative ways to include their faces on invitations and save-the-dates. We say save it for the professionals and book yourself in for an engagement session with a great photographer. • Couples are utilising craftsmanship to create something entirely unique with their invitation suites, from folded origami and lasercut paper, to printing onto unusual materials like perspex, wood and leather. The only limitation is your imagination. THE FLOWERS • Loose and unstructured arrangements are still the order of the day, as though you could have been walking through a wildflower meadow picking up blooms as you go along. We’re seeing a heady mix of flowers with foliage as well as herbs and even fruits mixed in for a decadent feel. Colour-wise, it’s rich bold colours softened slightly with paler creamy blooms. • The trend for refectory style dining is great as it is so much more intimate and interactive than traditional round tables. It does mean though that there’s much less space on the tables for flowers and décor, particularly if family-style sharing platters of food are added. So there’s only one thing for it and that’s to go up with your decor. We love a good floral chandelier - from a mass of twigs and foliage to cascading flowers, they look nothing short of magical. • There are so many great reasons to use faux flowers and it’s not all about budget-saving, there’s a sustainability aspect, too. You can keep them long after the day, hire them in and minimise the wastage, and they allow the use of out-of-season blooms. • What you pop your flowers into is just as much a part of the design as the flowers themselves and we’re seeing such a creative selection filtering through, from minimalist, geo-inspired pleated styles in soft dusty pastels through to modern metallics and even fruit. Seek out the unique. www.pocketfulofdreams.co.uk

W E D I Q UE T T E HOW TO HELP YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER TO CREATE THEIR DREAM WEDDING
Claire Moulds offers invaluable advice to mum, dad and future in-laws on their roles in making the wedding planning process as smooth and as stress-free as possible. First and foremost remember the golden rule – it is NOT your day. True, you may have dreamt about your child’s wedding since the day they were born but, ultimately, the final decision on every aspect of the ceremony and reception lies entirely with them and their future husband or wife. That’s not to say you shouldn’t have any input into the big day, or proffer advice, but always wait to be invited first! Some couples have a very clear vision from the outset, and are happy to work together on creating their dream wedding, with minimal help from their respective families. Others will want to involve their nearest and dearest in the entire process, from writing the invitations, to making the table centrepieces, sewing bunting for the marquee, baking the cake. Whichever approach your child chooses to adopt, be supportive and let them know that you are there to help them as much or as little as they want. The pressure of creating the perfect day – not just for them, but for their family and friends – can be extremely stressful, so make it your aim to reduce the pressure wherever possible and not to add to it. This is especially the case if you do not agree with some of the choices being made! If you are unable to let it go and feel you simply HAVE to say something, try to deliver your thoughts in a calm, measured fashion, however upset you might be. Emotions will already be running high, so bear in mind that any perceived criticism of the wedding plans is likely to be taken badly and leave you all feeling battered and bruised afterwards. It’s also important to recognise that the wedding is about two families, not just your own. Your child, through the act of getting married, will form a lifelong link between your family and their partner’s, and both need to be on an equal footing from the very start. While the bride’s parents may have historically taken the lead on decisions, as they were paying for the wedding, the modern approach is for both families to be equally involved. If you don’t know each other very well, suggest getting together a few times during the planning process for a meal or a drink to remedy this. If you’re the mother of the groom, it can be difficult to find your place in proceedings as your future daughter-in-law is likely to be taking the lead role in the planning process and will turn to her own mum for advice and support. Make it clear from the outset that you are more than happy to help share the load and are available as a sounding board whenever she needs it, even if it’s simply to vent over a coffee if things are getting too much for her. And, while she may have a clear idea who she wants to accompany her on her own dress appointments, there’s no reason at all you can’t invite her on a shopping trip with you to choose your outfit. One of the thornier aspects of being ‘the parents’ is how much to contribute financially. These days many couples prefer to pay for their own wedding – or at least the majority of it – with the onus no longer on the bride’s parents
36 PLANNING ❤ www.myweddingmag.co.nz
Image: www.awp.co.nz
to pick up the entire bill. However, that still leaves the dilemma of ‘how much?’ It goes without saying that it’s not a competition as to who gives the more generous donation to the wedding fund. Both families may have very different incomes, approaches to funding family weddings and opinions on what the parents should and shouldn’t pay for. Respect the decision of your opposite numbers and, if they don’t want to share what amount they contributed, do not ask your son or daughter to tell you, even in confidence! If you can’t afford to make a financial contribution, remember that your time and skills are just as valuable. You could offer to write all the invitations, address the envelopes and take them to the post office, thereby saving the bride and groom hours of precious time. Putting money into the wedding fund does not ‘buy’ you the right to make key decisions, even if you have put in the largest amount. My friend’s mum thought that by paying for the lion’s share of her wedding she could demand to have three tables at the reception solely for her own friends, even though that meant her daughter and fiancé would have to not invite some of their closest friends in order to make room for them! Appreciate that your offspring might not want to give you a full financial breakdown of the cost of the wedding, and that you might not know what your money fully or partly paid for. If you feel strongly that your money should pay for specific items – as the bride’s parents you may want to buy her dress, and as the groom’s parents you might want to pay for the drinks – then ask if that’s a possibility. On the day itself, accept that your son or daughter is going to be in huge demand. As well as wanting to spend time with each of their guests and having their formal photographs taken, they will also want to enjoy private moments with their new spouse. Do not take it personally if it feels as though you are only getting a brief word here and there! If there is a special moment you want to share on the big day, make it clear beforehand so it can be included in the schedule, especially if it’s not a traditional part of the proceedings. Finally, don’t forget that a wedding is just the first of many future celebrations that you will all share - use it as an opportunity to get to know the people who have welcomed your child into their family and build the foundations of a lasting friendship. Your children – and future grandchildren – will thank you for it.

It’s easy to expect the worst when you see the words ‘children’ and ‘wedding’ in the same sentence. Those two simple words can conjure up nightmarish images of gangs of little people terrorising your other guests, screaming and crying uncontrollably as you say your vows, or breaking down in a sugar-induced tantrum during your first dance. However children can be adorable and bring heartfelt warmth to your special day. If you’re thinking of including children at your wedding, we’re on hand with a few helpful tips to keep everyone happy regardless of their age. Little Helpers Little people love to please and lend a hand so make them feel like they’re an important part of your day by giving them small tasks to do. You can ask them to help by handing out the confetti or little bottles of bubbles at the end of the ceremony, bearing the rings, or helping to round up your guests for photos. Don’t forget to tell your little helpers what a great help they have been once they have completed their task, the praise will make them feel extra special and in return they’ll want to help out some more. Picture Perfect Children are renowned for having an attention span that rivals a goldfish, so it pays to organise any photos including them to be taken as soon after the ceremony as possible to get the best out of them. It’s also important to ensure there are plenty of things for them to do while your photographer is busy with you and your other guests. If you want your young guests to join in then it’s a good idea to make sure you plan any child-focused activities early in the day, before their attention span and energy levels are depleted. Bite Sized When considering the menu for the little people, keep it kid-friendly – fish fingers or chicken nuggets with chips make great options; the kids won’t appreciate anything too fancy, and parents may be unhappy if it’s too unhealthy. The same rule applies to dessert – ice cream or a fruit salad washed down with a slice of wedding cake will always be an instant winner.

Entertain Me Food may be the way to win a man’s heart but fun is how to win a child’s love. All you need to plan your entertainment with children in mind is a splash of creativity and a great big dollop of fun. There are plenty of options to keep your young guests (and some of the older ones, too) grinning from ear to ear - from professional entertainers to outdoor activities. Hire a face painter to transform them into tigers and butterflies, set up a game of crochet on the lawn, or hire a bouncy castle if the budget can stretch to one. Whatever you decide, make sure the entertainment is age appropriate otherwise you may be wasting your money. For more ideas for entertaining the kids, try Rainbow Rascals or The Fun Warehouse. To keep the kids entertained during the ceremony or the wedding breakfast, you can make fun goody bags or activity packs for them to enjoy. Colouring books, crayons, stickers, a little pot of non-toxic Play Doh, and some yummy treats are all easy ways to keep children quiet for a few minutes. Don’t include anything that might make a noise or will need adult supervision. It’s also a good idea to check the contents of your activity packs with your venue because some may not allow certain items. Activity packs are not the only way to keep the kiddies entertained. We live in a tech-savvy world and a tablet at easy reach can be a lifesaver when faced with a young guest teetering on an edge of breakdown. Pre-load the tablet with fun games, interactive apps and movies to use at a moment’s notice. You can take your child-friendly entertainment one step further if your venue, or more importantly your budget, can cater for a separate breakout room. It really can be worth every extra penny if done right. It can be a room where the children can simply let off steam without disrupting the proceedings. Alternatively, it can be somewhere for them to chill out. Throw in some giant pillows, comfy blankets, a few buckets of popcorn and a Disney favourite, and you’ve discovered the winning formula to smiling faces all round. After Hours If you’re planning to invite children to an evening do, you can help parents out by organising childcare locally. Depending on how many you have coming with children, you may want to discuss plans with the parents to find out what they’re comfortable with, whether it’s an in-room sitter, a listening service or full-on childcare. Add the contact details for a babysitting service into your wedding invitations or give your guests a day off from their parental duties by organising a team of sitters to whisk the little ones off for a few hours. Rockmybaby provides professional babysitting services across New Zealand; they can also custom create event care packages catering just for your wedding. You may, however, find that your wedding gives those with kids the perfect excuse to enjoy some adult-only fun by leaving the little ones at home, or by asking friends or family to take care of them. V O W S T H AT W O W By Rochelle Fleming
One of the key components of the day, and what truly makes your day special, are the vows that you share with your future husband or wife. It’s the one time during the ceremony where people really will be listening intently as you say those heartfelt words to your partner. There are typically four standard questions I get asked around vows and I’m going to answer these for you: What structure works best? The form or structure that I believe works well and represents a good example is the following: I, Name, take you, Name, to be my wife, my partner in life and my soul mate. I will treasure our friendship and love you today, tomorrow, and forever. I will trust you and respect you I will laugh with you and cry with you. I will love you faithfully and unconditionally through the best and the worst, the difficult and the easy. Whatever may come, I promise I will always be there for you. The above is an example that follows the structure of : • Legal – Legally you are required to say I take you to be my husband / wife • Promises – what you will do in the marriage. In addition to the above, you could: • Add something personal about your bride / groom along the lines of – “Life wouldn’t be so fun and interesting if it wasn’t for you” . • Add humour into the promises – “I promise to always put the toilet seat down”. The key is to make sure your vows are concise, hold meaning and are personal to the two of you. Do I have to memorise my vows? No, it’s not a great idea. In my years of experience as a celebrant, there has only been one bride who successfully memorised her vows. If you are confident speaking then I recommed you to say your vows to each other holding one another’s hand; the other hand holds a cue card with the vows on, to refer to if you need to. The alternative would be to repeat your vows after the celebrant. However, I only recommend this to those who are not confident as it can sound repetitive, especially if the same vow is written by the bride as the groom. Should I write my own vows? The majority of couples I meet with want to write their own with guidance. There are a plethora of research avenues on bridal websites and blogs. Additionally, your celebrant will provide a few ideas or samples to get you started with writing your own. I always collaborate with my couples as to how they want to approach their vows. Do we say the same vows or write them in secret? This is your one opportunity to share your vows / promises with your partner in your own words. In saying that, it is important to chat to your partner about the key promises that you want to make to each other in marriage. You need to both be on the same page! You may decide to write the bulk of the vows together, with a few personal lines separately; or to completely write them on your own and send them to me separately to be shared with each other on the day for the first time. Your vows are an important aspect of your day as well as of your life together as husband and wife. Take the time to make them words to live by! www.nzweddingcelebrant.co.nz

HANGING FLOR AL CH A NDEL IERS By Virginia Thompson
When it comes to decorating an event space, always examine the venue from every angle. Every nook, cranny and surface is a design opportunity, and that includes the ceiling. Decorating a ceiling may not be the first thing on your décor list, but it does present a unique blank canvas just waiting to be transformed. Just like the rest of your venue, the roof space of a ballroom, large hall or marquee can be customised to suit your wedding. If your budget allows, suspending oversized floral displays overhead is about as good as it gets. Large wreaths of flowers and foliage, perhaps with hanging threads of single flowers draping down, will take your guests’ breath away. Around the world we’re seeing lots of suspended floral décor, and there are lots of clever ways to use this technique. For starters, you don’t have to cover the entire ceiling with suspended flowers – this would be very expensive to do and most likely outside the average budget. That said, if you are hanging flowers in larger quantities, you will need very few flowers elsewhere in your venue. Instead of lavish floral centrepieces on your tables, keep things below simple. By hanging a few flowers from existing chandeliers at your venue, you can create that extra touch of elegance and whimsy without breaking the bank. Working chandeliers will create additional ambiance; if there are no chandeliers, consider adding fairy lights or using candles. When suspending flowers in place of centrepieces, you can dangle the flowers one-by-one or create a floral curtain. The flowers should end above guests’ eye level when seated, to avoid hindering conversation on each table. If the ceiling doesn’t soar, make sure you only suspend over tables, thus avoiding a few banged heads! Hanging floral centrepieces adds a layer of luxury and detail to any wedding ceremony or reception. The overall look is a visually interesting alternative to tall centrepieces. Be bold, and use some of the countless variations of this hanging flower trend. No matter whether your wedding is an ultra-elegant occasion or rustically casual affair, they’re perfect for adding drama to your décor. Some indoor venues will be perfect for hanging decorations, boasting high ceilings with beams, without requiring even the slightest change. Some may require an extra touch of creativity, but your floral designer is bound to have a solution. Don’t confine this idea to indoor weddings – consider it for decorating a gazebo or marquee, a porch or portico. Make the most of the natural canopies created by overhanging branches or trees! Take the flowers off the table and into the air for a truly stunning and unique look! www.flowergallery.co.nz

YOU A RE N O T INV I T ED! By Nicky Luis
Image: www.awp.co.nz
is often referring to a close friend of the groom. A small point here: It is not just her wedding - it is his wedding, too. Often when I have sat and chatted to my distraught bride about this “fiend” who dares to show his face at her wedding, I discover that she has not even spoken to the poor groom, who is completely oblivious to her distress. Ladies (and, yes, I am stereotyping here), you do need to talk to your fiancés about how you feel. As much as we wish they had the superhuman ability to read our minds, the fact is that they don’t. And it may come as a bit of a shock to you to understand that there may just be one or two girlfriends on your list who he is not all that thrilled about. Some key cornerstones to a great relationship are communication and compromise - so it is a great idea to talk to each other about any “fiends” who may have made their way onto the list - the most common one is the drunk, loud Uni friend who always tells the most inappropriate jokes. This way your Superman can have a quiet word to the offensive brute far in advance, thus causing you the least amount of distress. And if there are any ladies (or men) whom your groom finds objectionable, you have the opportunity to have a little chat with them, too. Remember, while your friends are incredibly important and you always need to have them in your life, both you and your partner need to be respectful of each other’s feelings. You are a team now – that is why you are getting married. Over the years, I have discovered that when it comes to couples who are trying to handle tricky guest list situations, they usually sit and stew on the problem, getting more and more worried. It is far better to make the decision jointly as to what you are going to do and take action immediately. You can then move on to other wedding matters and decisions. Do remember that it is a joint decision. There will be many times as a married couple when you are going to face family pressure, conflicts, friends being difficult, etc – this is a very good opportunity to have each other’s back and show what a strong couple you are.
If you are experiencing cold sweats and dread when thinking of your guest list – don’t worry as you are not alone! So many couples have issues when dealing with the tricky challenge of managing their guest list, and the challenges come in many shapes and forms. Which one are you facing? It just keeps growing Often the number of guests being added to the list is ever-increasing and, more often than not, this is due to family influences. Parents often want to invite friends and (distant) family members to your wedding who you may not necessarily want at your nuptials. I often say to my couples that the guests attending the wedding should be there because their presence will make my couple’s day that much better and more memorable. If not, they should be questioning why that guest is being invited. For the couple, this is a good test of working as a team and standing up to your respective families, politely standing your ground, and asserting that as a couple you are controlling the final guest list. It did not say “and Partner” When you send out an invitation to a single guest and you have addressed it solely to that person, what do you do if they RSVP for themselves and a partner? It’s quite simple really - send a note, email or make a phone call to say that you are delighted that they will be able to join you in celebrating your marriage, but due to “venue capacity limitations/budget restrictions” (insert the most applicable response), the invitation is just for them and not for a partner, and you sincerely hope they will still be able to join you. Again, you want to have people at your wedding who will make your day better by being there – having a complete stranger there is not going to do that. I don’t want HIM at MY wedding Oh, if I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard this line! Admittedly, it is normally from a fairly irate bride and she

WED DING IN JUR IES WHO’D HAVE THOUGHT THAT GETTING MARRIED OR EVEN JUST ATTENDING A WEDDING AS A GUEST COULD LEAD TO AN ACC CLAIM? AND YET, JUDGING BY THE FIGURES RELEASED BY ACC, OUR EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS AND CLINICS ARE SEEING QUITE A FEW WEDDING RELATED PATIENTS. IN FACT, ACC SAYS THERE’S AN AVERAGE OF ONE CLAIM FOR EVERY HUNDRED WEDDINGS.
Apparently, the dance floor is one of the most dangerous places with hundreds of cases of girls falling off their high heels, men pulling muscles while attempting their John Travolta moves, dancers slipping on wet floors thanks to spilled drinks, and toes being trampled on. And, while we know it’s great to catch the tossed bouquet, is it really worth sustaining an injury over? Apparently, yes! That said, ACC maintains that many injuries occur before the wedding even begins. Back strains from moving tables, lifting cases of wine, carrying musical equipment and falling while putting up lights and decorations are just some of the examples listed. Wedding-day cricket matches, running races and sack races also ended in injuries, while food preparation led to cut fingers, and there were chipped teeth on foreign objects lurking in cakes and other wedding meals. Some claims related to swallowing wedding rings (go figure!), people being hugged too tightly and tripping while filming the event. You’ve surely all seen those disastrous YouTube clips of the photographer landing in the drink while walking backwards filming the happy couple! Injuries could happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time, nuptials or not, said ACC’s general manager of insurance and prevention services, John Beaglehole. “Just being aware of that can act as a prompt to do simple things to reduce the risk, such as cleaning up spills, taking care when lifting heavy objects and using sharp knives, and drinking responsibly,” he said. “And maybe restrain the Miley Cyrus moves if you’re wearing heels on the dance floor.” It’s safe to say that many injuries won’t be put down as wedding-related … they can only be identified as such if the injured party specifically mentions they were at a wedding or involved in the wedding preparations. So, this wedding and party season, head Beaglehole’s advice to reduce your risks! You don’t want to be the one who puts a damper on the party.
❤ Identified wedding-related injuries, 2010-2012: • Dancing - about 160 claims. • Falls - about 100 claims. • High heels - about 30 claims. • Cuts from knives - about 15 claims. • Wedding dress (putting on, lifting, tripping over) - about 13 claims.

I N SE A S O N By Rebecca Murray
WINTER For: • You may find that you can get a discounted rate for a wedding as there are generally fewer bookings. • You can really amp up the heat and atmosphere inside your venue with an open fire and tons of candles. • Snow can make for great images. • You can vary the colours from the warm tones of red and gold, to the icier blues and silvers. Against: • It’s cold! While you can use this to your advantage, getting your guests excited about it can be hard. • There’s a distinct possibility of rain – your photographer may need to hang around for longer (as will your guests) while you wait for a shower to clear. And don’t forget the frizzy hair! • You may not be able to get outdoor photos at all – have an alternate in mind. • You may be restricted on venues that offer wet weather options. Best Tip: Plan, plan, plan! If possible, have your ceremony and reception in the same location to avoid travelling and getting in-and-out of vehicles, and make sure you and your guests will be warm and comfortable.
Make an informed decision on the timing of your special day. SUMMER For: • There’s a good likelihood of fine weather and a sunny day. • Better weather offers a choice of outdoor locations for ceremonies and receptions. • Summer weddings lend themselves to a variety of colours and themes. Against: • A hot summers day can turn sticky and uncomfortable for your guests. Ensure you provide shade and drinks. • A popular season, Summer is super busy. You may need to book 2 years in advance for your preferred venue and suppliers. • If you are getting married or taking your photos in a public place, expect to have a few spectators. Best Tip: If there are no trees or manmade structures for shade, consider parasols. Cool bottled water will definitely be appreciated. AUTUMN For: • Many couples favour the rich colours autumn heralds in, and use those within their theme or as a base for a colour palette. • Chances are the weather will hold, and you’ll avoid the sweltering heat of a summer day. Against: • The weather can be a little more unpredictable. A brisk wind or light shower may affect outdoor ceremonies, so a back-up wet weather option should be considered. • You may find a little less variety for your outdoor photos in terms of colourful or vibrant landscapes – everything will be gold, yellow and brown. Best Tip: Make the most of the natural autumn landscapes in your photos. Stand out amongst the fallen leaves.
SPRING For: • Fresh new grasses and flowers create a beautiful backdrop for ceremonies and photos. • With so much new growth around, spring weddings can take on a variety of themes and colours. • Venues and suppliers are less busy so you may not have to book so far in advance. Against: • The weather can be unpredictable. • Outdoor ceremonies are a possibility, but make sure you have a wet-weather option on hand. Best Tip: Take advantage of nature’s bounty and incorporate spring freshness into your theme.

TA I L O R M A D E The only thing better than getting a suit tailor-made for yourself, is getting one tailor-made for your wedding day. Your first step to getting it right it to realise that it is all about the bride! Either include her in your decision-making, or keep her in mind when you are making your choices. The next piece of advice from Ronald at RJB Design is to do your research, and that goes for any suit purchase. Look at pictures of styles, fabrics and prices. Movies can be a great source of inspiration think Oceans Eleven, Inception and Quantum. Then make an appointment to fully discuss your options, allowing time to look through fabric swatches and flick through photos. It’s a great opportunity to bounce ideas around and get different pricing options. Pay attention to the smallest details – your bride will appreciate it! A fantastic suit will look even better with a good pair of shoes, the right shirt and tie, and cufflinks that suit the look you’re after. www.rjbdesign.co.nz

T HE ULT I M AT E SH AV E Men face the same challenge every day – getting as close a shave as possible without irritating the skin. In order to tackle hard-to-reach areas where hairs can grow in different directions, men often have to go over the same part of their face or neck repeatedly during shaving, causing skin sensitivity and irritation. To combat this, the Philips Shaver Series 9000’s innovative and unique contour detect technology features three shaving heads that each flex in eight different directions. This flexibility means the Shaver 9000 can detect and follow every contour of the face, for a precise shave that catches and cuts up to 20 percent more hairs in a single pass. The Philips Shaver Series 9000 includes patented V-Track Precision Blades that gently guide hair into the best cutting position for the closest result – even flat-lying and different lengths of hair. The AquaTec Wet & Dry seal lets you choose between a wet and dry shave. The advanced charging system gives two options: 50-minutes of running time after a single one-hour charge, or quick charge for one full shave. Includes a SmartClick Precision Trimmer for perfect moustache and sideburn trimming. The S9111/26 model features the SmartClean PLUS system for easier and more hygienic cleaning. At the touch of a button, it cleans, dries, charges and lubricates the shaver, so it shaves like the first time, every time. www.philips.co.nz

K N O W I N G T HE DIF FERENCE SO, YOU’RE ABOUT TO DECIDE ON YOUR CATERING OPTIONS, AND YOU’RE BAMBOOZLED BY THE RANGE OF MENU ITEMS ON OFFER. THE TEAM AT THE DIFFERENCE CATERING EXPLAIN YOUR OPTIONS AND HELP YOU WORK OUT WHAT WILL BE BEST TO SERVE TO YOUR GUESTS.
It’s worth remembering these points before you get started: • Provide a variety of foods to please all appetites and tastes. • Check with guests regards food intolerances – do you need gluten free options? • Try to provide a mix of hot and cold food. • How long is your function and what time of day is it? • Is your event formal or informal? And remember – you are not in the kitchen at your own event, so preparation is a key ingredient. The amount of food you require per person depends on how long your guests will be milling before the main meal, whether there is indeed a main meal to follow, and whether that main meal is light or more full. As a general guide allow 3-4 canapés per person for pre-dinner drinks of an hour’s duration or four pieces of finger food per person per hour for a cocktail or standing event. A popular option, if you do not have the time or space for a sit down meal, is to have a standing or grazing menu consisting of a combination of the following styles eaten over the duration. This allows guests to mingle, encouraging a fun and fluid atmosphere. If you’re planning a seated meal, stay tuned next issue when we’ll walk you through your options. www.thedifference.co.nz

F INGER F O O D VS C ANAPE FINGER FOOD IS DESIGNED TO BE JUST THAT – EATEN WITH YOUR FINGERS. YOUR GUESTS WON’T NEED A KNIFE, FORK, SPOON OR CHOPSTICKS.
Finger foods often include miniature pies and burgers, spring rolls, petit, sandwiches, little pizzas or skewers, arancini, tarts etc. They’re generally fairly filling items, often around two to three bites, ensuring your guests feel like they’ve eaten rather than just nibbled. If dinner and dessert aren’t being served, you could include ice cream cones, small pastries, cookies or other sweet items to be served in the last 45 minutes of your event. This also helps to signal the winding down of your event - as does turning the lights up, music off and opening the front door. www.thedifference.co.nz

C ANAPÉS CANAPÉS ARE USUALLY MORE REFINED THAN FINGER FOODS, SMALLER AND MORE FORMAL.
Traditionally served on a toasted bread base, there are a huge range of bases that can be substituted – rice cracker, rosti, cucumber rounds or wonton crisp. However, it is a single delicate bite where you can let your imagination run free. Use a small shot glass for soup sips, a Chinese spoon for a petit duck salad or a rosemary sprig to skewer prawns. Because canapés are generally created as one-bite morsels, it’s very easy for guests to indulge while still holding their glass of bubbly and a napkin. Your canapé dishes could include little tartlets, delicate cigars, savoury cones, blinis, or a host of bite sized delicacies! www.thedifference.co.nz

BOWL - CART ON - FORK FOOD BOWL FOOD IS NOT JUST SOUP. COMMONLY DESCRIBED IN THE INDUSTRY AS WALK-‘N-TALK FOOD, THESE DISHES CAN BE SERVED IN BOWLS, BASKETS OR BOXES.
The dishes themselves are obviously more filling – they’re mini meals – and guests will usually need some sort of utensil to eat them with, although something like fish and chips can be nibbled using the fingers. Your bowl food dishes could include a salad, pasta or noodle options, soup or gazpacho, risotto or a variety of seafood dishes. You can either individually portion these dishes as we would or, for ease of service, salads can be served on a large platter for guests to help themselves or a hot wet dish like curry or tagine can be placed on low setting in a slow cooker for self service. www.thedifference.co.nz

C A R V E R Y S TAT I O N A simple way to fill up later in the evening is a carvery station. This can consist of a glazed ham, a roast sirloin or leg of lamb kept warm in a very low oven, then carved and served with warm rolls, salad fillings, accompaniments and chutneys. To compliment the carvery, we often serve small salad cartons for the vegetarians, gluten free guests or those wanting a lighter option.

T O CUT OR T O KEEP It’s up to you how much cake you provide, whatever configuration the cake takes. However, if you wish to save a tier, or significant portion of cake for celebrations following directly on from your wedding – or perhaps for a future event - then you obviously need to allow for that when ordering from your cake specialist. In my own business, For Heaven’s Cake, I have re-iced tiers after some months, or in one case 1.5 years - for various occasions. Tradition used to ‘dictate’ that a layer was set aside for the christening of the first baby - but it could be that you simply want to enjoy more cake further down the track for a birthday, intimate dinner, or anniversary ... Saved cake is best kept by first wrapping it in foil, then cling film or into a box, and dating, before placing in the freezer. In the case of well-brandied fruitcakes, these will keep for many months in an airtight tin, or are also successfully frozen. Recently I provided mini iced portions of fruitcake for a wedding, (aside from the main creation) and each was presented in its’ own separate cute box, and given or sent to friends and family who were unable to attend the wedding. This used to be commonplace but happens less now - a forerunner to the “goody bag”. If your cake is to be served as the only dessert, then clearly more will be needed. In the event that you prefer that all of your wedding cake is eaten at the reception, then ensure that you only order what you require and no more - it’s quite common to over cater, especially if there are other sweet temptations on offer. It’s a shame to spend a not insignificant amount of money on a special creation, to then have it overlooked because nobody has room left in their tums! Whether you opt to cut or keep, be sure to savour, and enjoy. www.forheavenscake.co.nz

M O R O C C A N B A R B E C UE L E G O F L AMB W I TH GR A IN SAL A D Serves: 4-6 Preparation Time: 40 minutes + 1 hour/overnight marinating time Cooking Time: 40-50 minutes Ingredients: 1 cup Yoplait Greek Style Yoghurt, plus extra to serve 2 teaspoons crushed garlic 1 cup rice and quinoa mix 1/2 cup roughly chopped toasted walnuts 2 tablespoons finely chopped flat leaf parsley juice of 1 lemon
2 tablespoons Moroccan seasoning 1.3kg boneless leg of lamb, butterflied 1 cup red grapes, halved 2 spring onions, sliced 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
Method: 1. Combine yoghurt, Moroccan seasoning and garlic in a large bowl or snap-lock bag. Add lamb; turn to coat. Cover and chill for at least 1 hour or overnight, turning occasionally. 2. To make the salad, cook rice and quinoa mix according to packet instructions. Allow to cool before combining with grapes, walnuts, onions and parsley. Combine olive oil and lemon juice in a screw-top jar and season to taste. Shake until well combined and toss into the salad. 3. Heat a barbecue, grill pan or grill to medium-high heat. Grill until meat is cooked to your liking (10-15 minutes per side for medium-rare). Rest 10 minutes before thinly slicing and arranging on a platter. Serve lamb with grain salad and drizzle with extra yoghurt. Notes: Rice and quinoa mix is available in the rice section of the supermarket. Any single or combination of grains can be used. Barley, rice, freekah or even lentils make excellent alternatives. Couscous would also work well. Marinating any meat in yoghurt has a tenderising effect and gives a succulent result. www.yoplait.co.nz

V ILL A MA RI A Winning six trophies and eight gold medals at the Marlborough Wine Show, Villa Maria continues to add to its impressive trophy and medal collection. George Fistonich has spent five decades at the forefront of New Zealand’s wine industry. In 1961, at just 21 years of age, George leased five acres of land from his father in Mangere, Auckland and started off with just an acre of vines. He harvested his first grapes in 1962 and made his first wine under the name Villa Maria. The rest, as they say, is history, as he went from a one-man-band to a global brand. The pinnacle of the evening was being awarded the coveted Ol Glass Champion Wine of Show for the Villa Maria Estate Single Vineyard Seddon Pinot Noir 2012. The celebrations didn’t stop here however with the 100% family and New Zealand owned winery being awarded a further five trophies across four varietals and eight gold’s across five varietals, highlighting the excellence and breadth of wine the region produces, and the dedicated team who work tirelessly to ensure quality wine, year after year. www.villamaria.co.nz

A C H O C O L AT E FUSION The makers of Baileys Original Irish Cream have created the most decadent treat to ever grace New Zealanders lips: Baileys Chocolat Luxe- a fusion of Baileys Original Irish Cream with real Belgian chocolate, it is a melt-in-the-mouth experience of pure indulgence. This first-ever combination of liqueur and real chocolate marks a world-class innovation in drinks alchemy that took three years to perfect. Crafted with luxurious Belgian chocolate, Irish whiskey, cream and Madagascan vanilla, the result is a rich, molten chocolate drink that takes decadence to a new level. Created by Anthony Wilson, son of the creator of Baileys Original Irish Cream, after travelling to over three continents to personally taste 200 varieties of the world’s finest chocolate. After settling on the perfect match, he then created 800 recipes in the pursuit of the most desirable blend, and worked tirelessly to crack the recipe that would see chocolate perfectly mixed with Baileys. When this liquid dessert is poured over ice, a gorgeous pattern emerges on its surface, swirling and marbling the rich chocolate liqueur into an ornate Rococo design that’s as beautiful to look at as it is to taste. www.facebook.com/baileysnz

we love ... A BREW WI TH BI TE Speight’s Ginger Beer - a straight up, no nonsense dry-styled alcoholic ginger beer that does what it’s supposed to - quench your thirst. While alcoholic ginger beer is by no means new, Speight’s has recognised that drinkers would respond well to an alternative to the current options available - a less sweet, more intense ginger beer experience. Ideal served over ice or enjoyed straight from the bottle, it’s brewed for enjoyment all year round.
PERFECT BAL ANCE Perfectly balanced with fresh citrus and nettles plus hints of irresistible passionfruit and dried herbs, Allan Scott’s Malborough Sauvignon Blanc 2014 is a stunning example of New Zealand’s favourite white wine varietal. The clean and delicate flavours make it ideal to share with friends at a BBQ or keep to yourself for a romantic picnic for two. It pairs well with many dishes, thanks to its light and fruity nature, and is awesome alongside hot, crispy fish and chips. www.allanscott.com

D OUBLE DIPPING Super easy, these blueberry dumplings are delicious as dinner, dessert, or both! INGREDIENTS: 1½ cups of plain flour + extra 125g blueberries
½ cup hot water (not boiling) 1 tsp white sugar (optional)
TO SERVE: Double cream (YUM) INSTRUCTIONS: Place flour in a mixing bowl and add hot water. Mix with a spoon until the mixture becomes doughy. 1. Take out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until the dough is soft, smooth and elastic. Add a little more flour if it’s too sticky. Then roll out the dough onto a lightly floured surface to about 2mm thin. 2. Using a drinking glass (about 8-9cm / 3-3.5in in diameter) cut circles out of the dough. Roll up the scraps and repeat with the rest. 3. Sprinkle blueberries with 1 teaspoon white sugar and mix. 4. Place a teaspoon of berries into the center of the pastry, fold over and pinch the edges firmly. Repeat. Bring a large pot of water to the boil and cook dumplings for about 3-4 minutes (they will float to the surface and become slightly translucent when ready). Then serve with a big dollop of cream! ENJOY! www.blueberriesnz.co.nz

“When planning the wedding we really wanted our special day to be intimate, fun and more like a celebration. We share the same birthday on the 4th of November, so decided to have our wedding two days before to remind us every year of what we have together. We wanted our wedding to express who we are and what we love. We wanted it to be different, like us, and involve those we love.” The couple had private vows at The Ambers Bed and Breakfast in Silverdale, a lovely venue with rose gardens, a long driveway, fountain. It had a very warm feel. They had 40 of their closest family and friends attend, followed by a reception on the Ocean Eagle boat with 77 guests. After a whirlwind trip through Asia and India, Kent proposed on the last day of the trip in Singapore, right there in Changi Airport, dropping to his knee as they ran to the flight they were running late for. “A lot of our family were waiting for us at the airport after receiving the text that we sent just as we boarded the flight.” “Hey all, after a nervous drop to my knee at the Singapore airport she said yes! WE ARE ENGAGED!! Temporary travel ring on the finger!! Love you all can’t wait to see you! (thanks Brian!) x K&A”

Wanting a laid back but classy wedding, the couple chose a colour palette of light blue and natural hues, with many of the décor items, the stationery, flower arrangements, draping, screens, bunting and favours being a labour of love by family and close friends. The cake was made by the bride’s mum and iced by Carmen’s Cakes. The couple’s love of good food and drink, and given the groom’s line of work, saw three of NZ’s best cocktail bartenders preparing delicious mixed drinks for the guests. They matched their Mediterranean style food with Sangria Rosso on the dinner tables, then opened up the bar with rum and tequila punches after the first dance.

BEST ADVICE Make sure there’s a powerful reason for doing everything on your day. Be the author of what you include in your day, rather than just following what everyone usually does, or what you think you have to do. If you understand why these things are incorporated into a wedding day, you then get to choose to have it or not, or include it in a way that suits you.

This was our time to reflect on things and to appreciate each other with no one looking, or nobody else to please ... just us ... just brilliant.” Every speech was so special - not too long, not too short - but really powerful. The Groom’s daughter Jessica, aged 9, telling everybody why her stepmother was so special and why she wanted her Daddy to marry Jillian. C E L L UL I T E T HE R A P Y FOR MOST WOMEN, CELLULITE IS THE BANE OF OUR EXISTENCE. NO MATTER HOW MUCH WE DIET OR EXERCISE, THAT ORANGE PEEL EFFECT JUST WON’T GO AWAY!
Firstly, let’s look at what cellulite is. More often than not, it results from both a build up of fat in the fat cells under the skin with water retention around those cells. As the fat cells enlarge, the little envelopes containing them change shape, pulling on their anchor points where they attach to the skin. In a perpetuating cycle, the blood circulation is then slowed down, causing stagnation of metabolic waste. Sadly, the fat cells of men and women react to fat increases differently, which is why men don’t often get cellulite! Our skin is partitioned vertically by the fibrous connective tissue and the fat is pushed upwards into bulges. A man’s skin is thicker (yes, it’s true!) and is structured into cross-hatched compartments, thus there’s no deformation with any fat increase. Enter Lipomassage™ … a complete non-invasive and painless treatment plan that treats cellulite, contours and firms. Think of it as a very specialised massage. Sure, proper nutrition and a good exercise program are important, but there are always areas of the body that are resistant, like cellulite! Lipomassage will also help with unsightly saddlebags, that tummy roll that just won’t go away and large thighs. You can target whichever area of your body bugs you the most. If you want results that come quickly, and last, you really need to check out Lipomassage! www.bodybydesign.co.nz

TOP KNOTS From the catwalk to the Kardashian sisters, top knots are at the top of the pecking order, no matter whether it’s a classy look for a special event or a simple solution to keeping your hair off your face. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to getting a perfect top knot using the Scunci Bun Maker: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Gather your hair into a ponytail and fasten with the supplied hair band. Pull the ponytail through the hole in the Scunci Bun Maker and slide down to the ponytail base. Spread your hair over the bun maker like a fanfare effect. With one hand on the centre of your bun, slowly start to wind the end of your hair in a circular motion around the donut. You’ll find the hair will naturally tuck under the bun Once that’s done, start pinning the hair down using the supplied bobby pins You can also use the bun to add fullness or shape to other up-dos like the classic French Roll. CHO OSING A H A IRS T YLE POPULAR OPTIONS FOR STYLING YOUR CROWNING GLORY ON THE BIG DAY.
Cascading curls can be very romantic and the longer and thicker the hair, the better, especially if you want a few curls to cascade over your shoulders to the front. Those with longer hair might also want to consider a side swept updo which can drape over one shoulder, revealing a sexy neck and allowing the back of the gown to be seen. Sleek updos can be pinned centre back, low on the nape or slightly to one side. This style is best suited to those with very shiny hair, or you might like to consider a good product to prevent any stray hairs escaping. For a touch of vintage, you could add a few waves at the sides. A twisted chignon is very elegant and sophisticated, while a braided updo is slightly more relaxed. Another trend is the curly updo, a soft look achieved by creating airy curls and pinning them into place. It’s generally a good idea to have a thorough nosey through hair styling images on the net and in magazines. Clip or save the ones that catch your eye and create your own mood board. Then begin to narrow it down – will it suit your face, will it suit your dress, will it suit the location? These are all questions that will help you narrow down your choices, ensuring that you end up with a handful of options. Your gown designer can often be a great source of advice on what style will suit the gown, but you do also need to take into consideration the venue – you don’t want to be eating those tendrils all day if you’re on a blustery beach! Gown and venue sorted, it’s then time to chat to your hair stylist … and do a practice run! Whichever style you choose, ensure your hair is in optimal condition – have it trimmed, coloured and styled to perfection so that it really does become your crowning glory.

T OP CLE A R SK IN T IPS F OR BRIDES Drs Rod Claycomb and Judy Bragger are two of New Zealand’s leading authorities on the bacteria that cause acne and ways to avoid the condition. PhD scientists from Hamilton, together they developed epiology: the world’s first anti-acne cream with an active ingredient derived from New Zealand cow’s milk. The bioactive enzymes and proteins in epiology work to fight acne, reduce redness and provide a clearer, brighter complexion. Here are their top-tips to help every ‘bride-to-be’ avoid major breakout catastrophes before the big day. 1.
2.
3.
4. 5.
Watch your diet: Reduce the intake of foods rich in trans and saturated fats. Sugary, spicy and fried foods are difficult to digest and can flare-up skin breakouts. For the healthiest skin, consume lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Clean your face regularly: It’s important to wash your face twice daily to remove dead skin cells and extra oil from your skin’s surface. Use warm water and a mild facial cleanser that’s soft on your skin. Apply an anti-acne cream, preferably one without harsh chemicals, for added protection against breakouts. Avoid harsh treatments: Many acne treatments are very harsh on the skin. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, common in acne treatments, can be unforgiving on sensitive skin types. Use a product without them to reduce the risk of scaling, redness, burning, stinging and dryness. Replace your linen: Your pillowcase absorbs the dirt and oils from your skin and reapplies them when you lay down again. Keep your sheets and pillowcases clean. Protect with sunblock: A little sun has been known to reduce breakouts by drying the skin out, but too much can damage your skin and prompt a breakout. Be sure to load-up on sunblock - the best is a broad-spectrum one that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Look for one that contains moisturiser and has an SPF of 30 or higher; this way, your skin will be hydrated and protected from the sun, resulting in fewer summer breakouts. www.epiology.co.nz

This has to be one of the most spectacularly romantic properties I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. You’ll be swept into Arabian luxury from the moment your chauffeured limousine pulls up at reception. Once inside, it’s as though you’ve stepped into a Bedouin tent – a very luxurious one, granted. Lush, sweeping lawns dotted with lines of majestic palms lay sprawled between the low-rise whitewashed buildings that are home to the various restaurants and bars. No matter where you wander on the spacious grounds, water is a key element – babbling fountains regally guard the courtyard ponds, large urns softly spout, and vast swimming pools abound. In fact, the hotel boasts what is considered to be the longest pool in the entire region – and it’s only one of three! At first glimpse, you might be forgiven for thinking you’re in Bali. White walls, dark stained timber, shutters – there’s a definite similarity of other hotels within the GHM group. Omanic influences are everywhere though, from the artwork that liberally dots itself around in the shape of sculptures and historical pieces to the soaring Islamic arches that are a standout feature. The accommodation is sublime, with nothing lacking, and everything on hand. Enormous beds are bedecked in ultrafine linens, TV’s and entertainment systems are the latest designs, and the bathrooms are graced with thick white towels and pampering amenities. My Club Suite had a private balcony and a very spacious lounge area, and the ensuite boasted an oversized sunken tub. Yes, they do host weddings, but to me, this property saluted romantic honeymoons like few I’ve come across before. While there are various restaurants to choose from, most couples were spotted dining privately in a multitude of mini courtyards, poolside under the palms, beachside or even in a quiet corner of the verdant lawns. The nightly torches and candles softly illuminated their faces, failing miserably to hide their obvious love for one another and their pleasure at being in such incredible surroundings. While there are 158 guestrooms and villas, space and privacy abound. It never once felt crowded. From the doormen and porters to the wait staff and housekeeping, service was exemplary! This is definitely one for the bucket list, especially with the range of activities and adventures right on your doorstep. Muscat City offers divine shopping and world-class dining, there’s the Gulf of Oman to explore on a range of boats and, if you’re up for a little more adventure, head to the desert and visit Bedouins, make for the mountains and hike to your heart’s content, swim in a wadi, visit a market – the list goes on! www.ghmhotels.com/en/muscat www.sidetripofalifetime.com.au www.tourismoman.co.nz www.etihad.com
