The quintessential Arabian-style property sprawls over 22,000 sq.m of tranquil desert and comprises a destination Spa, villas with private pools, Arabian-style rooms, a 1,000 sq.m pool, six restaurants and bars including Al Mabeet, a desert dining experience which captures the spirit of the past.

WATCHING THE WORLD GO BY… IN THE HIGH ANDES Words & images by Natalie Tambolash
W
hen I first embarked on this journey some 20 days ago, never did I think I would be sitting in a bar at 10 o’clock in the morning, with a cocktail in hand and nothing to do but watch the world go by. The last 20 days have been go, go, go…taking in and exploring all that Peru has to offer, all the must do experiences that many have on their bucket lists. The iconic sights of the Peruvian tick list, as many would see it, squeezed into less than three weeks. Sitting here now, with a Chilcano (Brandy cocktail) in hand at 10am is like taking a huge sigh of relief, and reflecting on the journey so far. This particular day started when we were transferred to Wanchaq Station in Cusco and boarded the Titicaca train bound for Puno at 6.40am.
When I first learnt of this train journey, all I knew was that it travelled through the High Andes, was an alternative to travelling on the local bus and was deemed ‘fabulous’ and ‘a highlight’ by those that had gone before me. It ended up being both of these things… and so much more. I feel like I am in a Michelin star restaurant on wheels with ever changing spectacular scenery going past the window. The service is impeccable from the moment we first arrive at the station in Cusco to the time we depart the train at the other end in Puno some 10 hours later. Everyone on board provides you with the most attentive service from remembering your food allergies, to what coffee you like, to taking orders for several tables at a time without writing anything down. Just like a fine-dining restaurant.

On board the carriages are bright, spacious and plush, exuding that little bit of romantic luxury and transporting you to another era. What I would imagine of the Orient Express. There is a bar carriage, where drinks and snacks are served (the best banana chips and crisp corn kernels you will possibly taste) and where at 10am and again in the afternoon, there is dancing, singing and fabulous entertainment by locals and a great Peruvian fusion band, (think Peruvian flute music combined with classic rock). There is also an observation carriage at the back of the train where you can park up as you please to take in the spectacular scenery of the High Andes. The journey also comes with a complete meal service, which rivals most top restaurants of the world,

Out in rural areas, village life revolves around manual labour; tiling and fertilising fields, spraying or harvesting crops, corralling zebu, making clay bricks, maintenance of their adobe huts and outbuildings, collecting water and firewood, and the neverending task of washing clothes. Whale Shark operators use lightaircraft spotter planes to search for the whale sharks, guiding the tour boat skippers to the fish's location. Exmouth operator, Ningaloo Blue's, spotter planes have been in the air for the past few weeks searching for the Whale Sharks. Their first tour occurred on Saturday 2 March with four very inquisitive Whale Sharks delighting passengers. Ningaloo Blue's on-board photographer, Violeta Brosig from
Blue Media Exmouth, captured some great footage. Exmouth Whale Shark and Dive has also started operations. The typical West Australian Whale Shark season runs from March to August, triggered by the annual coral spawning during the full moon. Ningaloo is one of the only places on the planet where these huge but completely harmless fish can be reliably located in large aggregations. The 2018 season saw a 97% successful interaction rate in the water with Whale Sharks. This is one of the highest rates to date; with a 97% rate also achieved in 2016. Most Exmouth Whale Shark tours

pened in 2017, The American Writer’s Museum is based on the Dublin Writer’s Museum. This is a place where you can see Prince’s slick pop lyrics rub elbows with Ernest Hemingway’s prose or an original Jack Kerouac On The Road manuscript. Originally opened in 2003 in Monterey, California, The Beat Museum moved to San Francisco's North Beach District in 2006. Initially, the museum secured a space for three months at the Live Worms Gallery on Grant Avenue. Later, it moved to a much larger location at 540 Broadway directly across the street from City Lights Bookstore, the epicentre of the 1950’s San Francisco ‘Beat Generation’ where such writers as Jack Kerouac (on The Road), Allen Ginsberg (Howl), William S. Burroughs (The Naked Lunch) and Neal Cassady held court. Edgar Allen Poe’s former house is
a typical ‘Row Home’ in Baltimore, MD and opened as a writer's house museum in 1949. Poe lived in the two and a half storey home between 1833 and 1835, and is best known for the poems Tamerland and other Poems (1827) and the Raven (1845). Exhibits tell the story of Edgar Allan Poe’s life and death in Baltimore and significant artefacts such as Edgar’s portable writing desk and chair, a telescope, china and glassware used by Edgar when living with the Allan family in Richmond, Virginia. The Edgar Allan Poe House, a National Historic Landmark designated in 1972 is open to visitors on a seasonal basis. (Note: There is also a larger museum in Richmond, Virginia, which houses a vast array of Poe artefacts). Tucked away at 907 Whitehead Street across from the Key West Lighthouse, Florida is the Ernest Hemingway Museum. Hemingway lived in this two-storey French Colonial style house from 1931 until

he moved to Cuba with his soon to be third wife in 1939. It was in this house, built in 1851, that Hemingway wrote some of his best work, including the short story classics, The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, as well as his rum smuggling novel, To Have And Have Not and the non-fiction work, The Green Hills of Africa. Hemingway often remarked on how convenient it was to live close to a lighthouse, as it could often guide him home when drunk. Today, inside the grounds are approximately 40 six and seven toed cats descended for Hemingway’s original broods. Hemingway would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1968. The F. I did my homework and learnt from the best – Aaron Russ. The owner of Wild Earth Travel is an Expedition Leader himself and has travelled to the white continent over 130 times... he’s grown up on an expedition ship, whilst my bach was always centred around sunshine and sand.

The Seabourn Difference Seabourn Encore has spent the summer down under cruising around NZ and operating transTasman cruises between Auckland and Sydney. undreds of New Zealanders have chosen to cruise their own back yard this summer with Seabourn, many likening the experience to staying in the finest luxury lodges and resorts around the country, but this one just happens to be at sea.

WALTZING DOWN THE DANUBE By Roderick Eime Getting into the swing of a European river cruise, Roderick Eime finds it hard to hold back.

river cruise promises much more than just castles and palaces. The itinerary operates in both directions between Amsterdam and Budapest and cruises at a leisurely pace along this classic waterway with more than enough time to kick back and enjoy the panorama as it rolls past.
No, I wasn’t overcome by some devilish influence, in fact, quite the reverse. Here we were in the Family of Liechtenstein’s City Palace in the heart of Vienna and immersed in a recital by the accomplished chamber orchestra. We sat transfixed as the ensemble brought to life classic renditions of Mozart and Brahms but when they struck up Johann Strauss’s immortal ‘Blue Danube’… well, it was all too much.
For example in Budapest (you have to say BudaPESHT to sound worldly) the tour heads to Budapest Railway Station’s Royal Waiting Room for APT’s Signature Experience following in the footsteps of the Habsburg Empire aboard the Grand Empress steam train. The ornately adorned carriages are from the early 1900’s and the whole ensemble travels to Gödöllő Palace, Elisabeth of Bavaria’s favourite residence to inspect this monument of Hungarian aristocracy and architecture.
Whirling around the auditorium, flanked by baroque masterpieces, we quickly fell under the spell of historic Vienna and it was easy to conjure up images of the grand old days of Emperors and Heads of State, champagne flutes clinking, engrossed in all the pomp and ceremony. While Vienna might have been the cultural climax for some, APT’s 15-day Magnificent Europe
Back in Budapest, there are still many Stalinist hangovers, and it’s great fun to wander around these former Soviet bloc streets. Some of the little alleyways, basements and side streets turn up curiosity shops brimming with bizarre paraphernalia. Stroll down Váci pedestrian mall in the centre of Budapest and past the racks of postcards and trinkets, you’ll be

offered all manner of Russian and Hungarian militaria right down to a MiG-21 pilot’s equipment. Budapest, let’s not forget, was the scene of some ferocious ‘last ditch’ battles between the advancing Russians and defending Germans. The city suffered terribly in the first months of 1945 and some buildings still retain the scars, especially up at the citadel where the Germans made their last desperate stand. European river cruising has firmly established itself as the in-demand tour option for travellers wanting to explore the great cities and cultures of both western and eastern Europe. The days of bum-numbing coach tours must be numbered if you compare the obvious advantages. Imagine arriving at a high-end hotel, unpacking and settling in just once, then towing it with you as you explore all the famous locations. The few road journeys are a few hours at the most and head out to cities like Salzburg (“I am 16 going on 17”) and Český Krumlov (in the Czech Republic) not situated directly on the banks of the Danube. Heritage Collection - Waitakere Estate The stunning new South Wing of the Heritage Collection Waitakere Estate officially opened in February. A select gathering of industry and stakeholders attended the unveiling officiated by the Honourable Paula Bennett. The new wing is connected by a covered walkway from the main hotel, leading on to eight beautifully designed Premier rooms, all with unobstructed views over the property’s native rainforest canopy to the Waitemata Harbour, Auckland Harbour Bridge and Rangitoto Island. The development is the vision of Reg Nevill-Jackson, son of Captain NevillJackson who purchased the land in 1940 to create a family home estate and protect the vast stands of native trees on the property. By the 1980s the property had expanded to become a family-run boutique hotel with Reg and his brother, Hugh Nevill-

lovely as the views they survey,” said Reg Nevill-Jackson.
The South Wing development took several years from design conception, through the planning approval phase to the building completion. It required a lot of patience but it was worth it, according to Reg.
On the ground floor of the South Wing is a dedicated health spa, with sauna, gym and a large sun-lit space for yoga classes, opening out through wall-to-ceiling glass doors on to a lawn terrace. Purpose-built massage and beauty treatment rooms complete the aesthetic and restful space.
“Through a combined effort from our architect, builders and interior designers, we feel we have managed to build a new wing sympathetic to the existing hotel. We want to thank Haydn & Rollett and Stewart Harris of MacIntosh Harris for the interior design. The Premier rooms are as

CORDIS, AUCKLAND By Gary Dickson
F
rom the moment your car sweeps down the driveway, and you are welcomed with a warm smile, you know your stay here is going to be a great one… Welcome to The Cordis, Auckland! Part of the Langham Hospitality Group, Cordis Auckland is a true 5-star hotel, with high class restaurants and museums close-by, and far enough away from the din of The Viaduct and Downtown Auckland to ensure a peaceful stay. The fact all 411 rooms and suites possess their renowned Dream Beds also helps. What stuck with me about my stay at the Cordis, Auckland is the staff. From the reception to the bar, from maintenance to the room service team…everyone exudes their pride in working here - everyone wants you to feel at home…but with luxury thrown in! Even if you’re not staying here, make sure you book in for one
of their exquisite High Teas. The Cordis (and indeed the entire Langham Hospitality Group) take this service to a new level. As I enjoyed a cold beer in the Lobby Lounge I could hear the Ooos and Ahhhs from a large group of ladies watching as their High Tea was served. From the subsequent chatter I got the feeling they were happy with what they had placed in front of them. My dinner reservation was at Eight - a Cordis innovative dining experience. As the name suggest, there are eight food stations for you to ‘eat through’. For one fixed cost go as many times as you like to fill your plate. But this is no ‘standard buffet’…the quality of the food is exceptional and if your kids (old and young) like chocolate then they will spend a lot of time at the chocolate fountain. Personally I’m a seafood fan and chowed my way through way too many shrimps and oysters.

Did I mention the staff are always there to help too? If the notion takes you, then you can always head to their fully equipped health club to work off a few kilos, go for a swim in their immaculate, inviting rooftop pool, or pamper yourself at their award-winning Chuan Spa. The Chuan back, neck and shoulder massage was my choice, but there are plenty to choose from and all realistically priced for a property of this quality and standard. Before settling in for the night I returned to the Lobby Lounge for a couple of nightcaps, and reflected on my experience. I have stayed at the Cordis (and it’s guise prior to this) probably 3 or 4 times, and never do I come away with anything more than…”I hope they ask me back again soon.” www.cordishotels.com/en/auckland
