From massive lions, young giraffes such as Josie (left) to tiny insects, Amy is busy and certainly versatile all day!

ZOO

Behind the scenes at a

What’s it like to work in a zoo? Amy took us behind the scenes to find out! I’m 20 and I live in Walsall. Animals are my number one passion in life. For the last six months I have been volunteering one day each week at Dudley Zoo. I studied Animal Care for 4 years at South Staffordshire College at the Rodbaston Campus. I started with level 1 Animal Care and worked all the way up to level 3, due to finish this July with the grade DDD (three distinctions). I’m not currently studying, but I’m very busy, as well as volunteering at the zoo I also have a casual keeper’s job at Rodbaston, where I work with the Reptiles and Fish! I hope eventually to be head of a section or a senior animal keeper at a zoo. My Day at Dudley Zoo begins at 9am. I go and check that all the animals I specifically work with are ok. I am based in the Discovery Centre so I work with

the small animals, the ferrets, Shadow, Smokey and Storm, the Guinea pigs, Toffee, Rufus and Alfie who is an albino guinea pig, and the chinchillas Eric, Elton, Buzz and Bowie. I gather all the tools and equipment I will need to clean them out. I also go to the kitchen area to check we have the different sorts of food we need to feed all the different species. Mammals are fed pellets that are specific to that animal, rat pellets, chinchilla mix and guinea pig mix. They also get a small amount of chopped fruit and vegetables. As extra treats, the rats have bread and the guinea pigs oranges. The oranges are very important because they give the Guinea Pigs vitamin C which they are unable to produce themselves. At the zoo, Animal Care comes before anything else so after food the mammals have a full clean which takes quite some time, usually until about 10:30. I then also have to clean the general area I’ve been working in. Next I move onto the reptiles; the snakes, lizards, frogs, spiders and even a few bugs! They all get fresh food and water. Reptiles eat very finely cut veg, lettuce, cucumber, carrot, and, on the top, we also put meal worms. Snakes will get fed a mouse once a week. Reptiles also need water spray to keep them humid. The amphibians have special dechlorinated water. Dechlorinated water is purified water used for amphibians, it helps keeps them humid. When handling the frogs we also have to put it on our hands before we touch them, touching them without this can cause their skin to burn so the water is special as it acts like a barrier. Once the reptiles are finished it’s time to tidy down. And I do mean down! Surfaces and floors are all fully cleaned down. Hygiene is always the key to keeping the animals healthy and safe. Some mornings I have to talk to the visitors about the animals, I love that. I love listening to them whilst they ask questions and show interest. I really enjoy being able to tell them things they never knew. I show visitors the animals they are especially interested in, I think it’s nice to educate about our animals rather than visitors just looking at them. I did a Creature Feature once where I talked

COMPETITION TIME

WIN

Dudley Zoo are very kindly offering a very special prize in a great competition. One lucky winner will win a family ticket to the Zoo, which gives free entrance to 2 adults and 2 children. To enter, simply answer the following question. What are Amy’s favourite animals in the zoo? 1. The lions 2. The Tigers 3. The Bears. Competition closes 14th June 2013.

CH ESTERW WIN! WIN! WIN!

Daseep the tiger

Orry the male Patagonian Sea Lion. He is a huge favourite at the zoo. He loves his fish!

One of the things I really love about my time at the zoo is working in the Discovery Centre. This gives me the chance to not only work with the animals but also with children too. The Discovery Centre is sometimes used as a venue for children’s birthday parties with a difference. The guests enjoy all the usual party food and games, but also get the opportunity to get hands on with a couple of our animals. Ferrets are a real favourite as they are easy to hold, you just need to grip them behind the forearms and support their back end. Sometimes we take a cockroach out for the children to stroke, they just have to run one finger down its back. Also, there is sometimes the chance to meet a bearded dragon, you let the dragon sit on your arm and then support it, keeping your other hand on its back. The dragon feels comfortable that way. There is an age limit of 3 years to handle the reptiles, only children over 3 years can hold them and they must have their parent’s consent. One animal we are unable to let the children handle in the Discovery Centre is the Chinchilla. We are unable to take chinchillas out the front of the DC as they are quite simply too fast and could try to make a quick escape! After lunch, we have to do a stock check to make sure we have enough of supplies for the next day. If not we note it down anything we need. Afternoons mainly consist of lots of shows and demonstrations at the Zoo, so whilst they are being done we use the time to tidy down. We ensure that all animals have

clean water and that their food hasn’t been tipped over (ferrets like to do that!). At 1:30pm I have to go and help collect the birds of prey in readiness for the bird of prey display that takes place in the Discovery Centre theatre at 2pm. In the show we have Nacho the Cara Cara, Echo the barn owl and Adelaide the kookaburra who is native to Australia. I do get involved in the shows. I sometimes hand out the hand wash to the audience, both before and after they have been in contact with an animal. Around 3pm we empty the bins and put the rubbish out before wrapping up the day at 4pm. In the summer we finish at 5pm and the keepers at 6pm. When the zoo closes the animals are all taken inside, where they spend the night and are safe. I feel very lucky to be able to work alongside amazing people in such a great Zoo. I love all of the animals I work with myself, being able to form a bond with them is a magical feeling. There are no really bad things about working in the zoo, except maybe not being able to work with the much bigger animals like the Big Cats or orang-utans, but that takes a lot of serious training. I did have the chance for one day to work with the other animals as part of a special ’Be a zookeeper for the day’ package. This included working with the Giraffes, Tigers, Sea lions, chimps, lions and penguins. They were all really special in their own way but my favourite were the Tigers. They were wonderful, I think they are two of the best tigers in the world. Another favourite was Orry the male Patagonian Sea Lion. He is a huge favourite at the zoo and loves his fish! Working at the zoo is just the best feeling in the world.

to the public about a snake, cockroach and chinchilla. I loved answering the questions and hearing the positive feedback from my audience.

With thanks to Dudley Zoo for allowing Amy to tell us all about her experiences.

PT: What was school like as you became fully fledged movie stars – did old friends still treat you the same?

OP: Oh yes, my old school mates are some of my closest. Turning up to school one day with my hair dyed ginger certainly turned a few heads. But they never treated me any differently. PT: Everyone always mentions how grounded you are – how did you keep your feet on the ground as your fame grew?

Ahead of this month’s special ‘Sellabrity’ football match and extravaganza, raising funds for the Harry Moseley charity, we grabbed a quick chat with one of the stars of the day, Harry Potter star Oliver Phelps, who chatted to us about all things football, Harry Potter and how you can get involved in ‘Help Harry Help Others’. Primary Times: Hello Oliver, first of all, you are involved with the ‘Sellabrity’ football match for HHHO. How did you become involved with the Harry Moseley charity? Oliver Phelps: I first met Harry when he was giving a talk at his primary school in 2010. I’ve never been so impressed by a speaker I’ve heard anywhere in the world before or since that first time I met Harry. After chatting with Harry afterwards I spoke about our meeting on Twitter and spoke of Harry’s story. Then, whilst I was in Australia, I did a Skydive and within 2 days was able to raise £2000, and, more importantly, spread Harry’s word on the other side of the world. It was even featured in a major newspaper in Sydney. PT: Why is supporting this event so important to you? OP: Help Harry Help Others is very important to me. The work Georgie (Harry’s mum), Adam Rickett and the rest of the team put in is brilliant. Being lucky enough to be an Ambassador for the charity makes this event very VERY important to me, hopefully we’ll be able to raise a good amount of money.

www.primarytimes.net 8

PT: I know you are both Birmingham City supporters, so how excited are you about this match – and which one of you is the best footballer? OP: BIG CORRECTION HERE..... James is a Birmingham city fan, I’m an Aston Villa fan. This has always been a divide in MY family. It’s a big deal for both of us, for James because he’s playing at the stadium he’s been going to since he was 6. I’ll be going to the stadium where I’ve been able to see Villa get some memorable results.

WHITSUN 2013 ISSUE

PT: What positions will you be playing in? OP: I’ll be playing in the midfield hopefully, but I’ll probably drop back to defence every now and then. James will be playing off the front two.

OP: I think it’s my family, my friends and my upbringing. I’ve been able to go to some very cool places, do some awesome things, and meet some interesting people. But when you meet people like Harry, who was not only making these bracelets, ordering the beads and selling them, but was also going through life of a primary school student, and was battling the terrible condition of a brain tumour, it really puts things into his perspective. PT: How did you feel as you filmed the final movie?

PT: Joe Cazalghe is also playing – do you ever find yourself getting starstruck when you meet someone like the former World champion boxer?

OP: It was like filming the others to be honest. Only on the last day when they were getting ready to knock down the studios did it hit home this was coming to an end.

OP: I’ve met Joe before, I remember when I met him the first time I was rather starstruck. He’s a legend in British sport, but what’s even better than that is that he’s a nice guy.

PT:The cast seemed to grow up together – do you all still keep in touch?

PT: Could you give us your score prediction for the match? ( We can check back after and see if you were correct!)

OP: I still chat to a couple of the guys from filming and the crew. We built some great bonds over the years. PT: What were your own favourite movies from the series?

OP: I’m going to say my team will win 3-1.

OP: My favourite was for filming the Goblet of fire.

PT: How can children and young people get involved with HHHO?

PT: What advice would you give to other young people reading this who dream of getting into the acting profession.

OP: Go to www.hhho.org.uk and see what events are happening. Also order your HHHO bracelets. PT: You were 14 at the time of your first Harry Potter movie. How did you get the role? OP: From my mum seeing in the paper that there was an open audition (anyone can try out) for every role in the movie. We thought why not?!? Miss a day off school and maybe get into a major movie, it really was a no brainer. We received a call back to meet the director and producers. This happened a couple more times until after our screen test we were told we were Fred and George Weasley. PT: Did you ever expect the films to be so successful? OP: I always knew it was going to be popular, the book sales made that obvious. But would I have thought when we started filming the 1st film that there would be 8 highly successful films to follow, a theme park attraction and to be known the world over?

OP: Never give up and stick with it. PT: What’s next up for Oliver Phelps? OP: Scoring a hat-trick at St Andrews on the 18th of May!

PARENTS

URGED TO BUY

SCHOOL

UNIFORM LOCALLY Parents are being urged to support their local economy by buying school uniforms from local suppliers. A new campaign to highlight the benefits is being launched by The Schoolwear Association, whose members clothe three quarters of Britain’s children. The association lists three reasons for buying your child’s uniform from local school shops and independent suppliers. • Buying locally supports the small, independent businesses that make up 99 per cent of all firms, keeping town centres alive and buzzing. • School specific uniform, typically sourced and supplied by independents, creates a sense of pride in your child’s school and community. • Independents and school shops provide excellent quality garments from ethically sourced factories. They offer custom-designed uniforms for schools, proper fitting, good stocks and service all year round, not just at “back to school” time. Matthew Easter, Chairman of the Schoolwear Association, said: “Many people want to support the smaller, more local businesses and retailers. They can see that it’s good for their community, and we want school uniform to be a part of that.

The Schoolwear Association represents businesses involved in the manufacture and supply of school specific uniform from manufacturers to wholesalers, independent retailers and direct to school suppliers. All members agree to a Code of Practice. Established in 2006, the Schoolwear Association is run on an entirely voluntary basis by some of the sector’s most experienced professionals.

WHITSUN 2013 ISSUE

“We understand that price is important, but there are real benefits if you are willing to pay a little extra for a premium product and service. It’s good for the local economy, the community and your child.”

Did you know a child can drown in 5cm of water? It’s really important to stay safe around water, not just in swimming pools and at the seaside, but also in your own home and surrounding community. A few safety tips include: • Check the area when you arrive and look for signs of danger. You may be able to enter the water, but can you get out safely? Is the water cold, are there any hidden currents, is there rubbish in the water, is it polluted? • Don’t swim alone and always tell someone where you are going. • If you are not a confident swimmer, don’t enter the water. • Check to see if there are tides, or currents. If someone gets into trouble: Shout for help, find the nearest phone and call 999 or 112 Do not enter the water to rescue anyone. Why not learn to swim, improve your swim technique or confidence at Derby City Council Learn to Swim Scheme? Our Learn to Swim qualified swim teachers offer fun swimming lessons for all ages from four year olds to adults,
