We asked lots of celebrities what their favourite story book was when they were young. Here are some of the answers…it seems that Roald Dahl was a popular choice.

Walk to School Week 20- 24 May National charity Living Streets is urging parents to leave the car at home and try walking with their children during May’s Walk to School Week. Walk to School Week (20-24 May) is an opportunity for parents and children across the UK to try walking to school. Along with Walk to Work Week (13-17 May), Walk to School Week forms a part of National Walking Month, a month dedicated to celebrating the beneﬁts of walking. Living Streets runs the national Walk to School campaign, and they say that and parents have told them that when they walk to school the journey is less stressful, the petrol bill goes down, their children perform better at school and that they, and their children, feel healthier and ﬁtter. CHILD IN NEED? Derbyshire County Council has launched a new countywide campaign to help ﬁnd foster carers and adoptive parents.

One Derbyshire couple who heeded the call were Joanne and Ian Turner from Dove Holes in the High Peak. They became approved foster carers in May 2012 after deciding to open their hearts and their family home to a foster child. Busy mum of four Joanne, 38, said: “We decided to become foster carers as our own children are getting older and seemed the right time to do it. We know that not everyone is as lucky as us and we wanted to give a child the stability and love that our own family has experienced. We knew that we wanted to foster with Derbyshire County Council so started the process in October 2011 and were approved in May 2012. We found the whole process very easy. I was worried at ﬁrst about how in-depth it would be but it was made so simple and didn’t feel intrusive.” The Turner’s ﬁrst placement, a young boy, came to stay in July 2012 and has quickly become a loved member of the family. The couple’s own children range in age from

seven to 15 and have been involved and supported every step of the way. Joanne says: “Our children have taken him into the family and absolutely adore him. You can really see the difference in him already. The basics such as stability and love make a massive difference to a child. It’s not always easy, sometimes it can be tough and there are always challenges to face but the rewards far outweigh the difﬁculties. Knowing that you can make a real difference in the life of a child is the best feeling in the world.” FOSTERING IS A FAMILY AFFAIR: Joanne and Ian Turner have opened their hearts and family home to a foster child. There are currently around 700 children in care In Derbyshire and they all need loving homes whether for a short length of time or longer term. There are different types of fostering and you can decide which sort you are interested in and that best suits you.

Ian Thomas, Strategic Director for Children and Younger Adults said: “We’ve got a great team of 430 foster carers already. But we always need more to make sure we have homes across Derbyshire wherever we may need them. If you have ever thought about fostering or adoption then now is the time to make the ﬁrst step.” Derbyshire County Council offers foster carers full training and support and maximum annual fees, allowances and bonuses ranging from £8,272* to over £36,000* depending on the age and complexity of needs of the child being cared for and the length of time you’ve been fostering for. On top of this you will receive a free broadband access, computer, membership of Derbyshire County Council’s Workforce extra scheme, a monthly e-newsletter and mentor support.

There are many different activities takin g place at Chatsworth over the Easter period. In the house you can take the easter egg trail, with decorated eggs to mark some favourite pieces, both new and old. Farmyard easter egg hunts take place at 11.30am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm each day during the bank holiday weekend and places are allocated on a first come first served basis at the farmyard on the day. You can also enjoy sprin g flowers from the garden, displayed indoors in the painted hall. In the garden you can hunt for golden eggs across the garden and discover what ’s growing and changing this spring. You can get crafty in the Oak Barn with spring themed crafts. You can have your face painted at Flora’s Temple and you need to look out for the Easter Bunny. You can also take a ride on a dray pulled by a shire hors e. Horse and dray rides are £2 per person. Footy4Harry promises to be one of the biggest celebrity charity football events this year, raising vital funds for the HelpHarryHelpOthers charity which was launched in September 2012 in order to continue the vital work of Harry, who passed away aged 11 in October 2011 from an inoperable brain cancer. In conjunction with Birmingham FC, the celebrity football match will feature two teams

Under the guidance of ex-Birmingham City ace Michael Johnson and former Aston Villa favourite Ian Taylor, the teams will battle it out on the ﬁeld to be crowned champion of the 2013 Footy4Harry match. Kicking off at 3pm, tickets are available for children from just £1 and adults £10, with all proceeds going to continue HelpHarryHelpOthers’ fantastic work. There will also be a family fun fair on site, held in St. Andrews away supporters’ car park. This will be free admission to all, with some tasty food stalls serving up delicious culinary treats, and adrenaline ﬁlled rides.

This part of the event will be free admission to members of the public and their families and will play host to a multitude of expo displays, fairground rides, food stalls and family entertainment. Harry’s mum Georgie Mosley adds: “Harry would have been very proud of the Footy4Harry match, combining his love of football and fundraising to help raise money for the beneﬁt of others. We wanted to make this event a fun day out for all the family, as well as football fans, so with tickets available from £1 this really is a great and affordable way to enjoy a summer’s day with your friends and family.”

Help for schools will get children learning outdoors Schools and community groups across Derbyshire are being urged to access environmental experts who can help children learn in the great outdoors. WildScience - which is supported by the University of Derby and delivered by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, Enviro-Learn and University students - is now offering a number of free educational experiences to schools and learning groups in Derby and Derbyshire. Through the WildScience project, teachers and group leaders can engage their pupils in a variety of free activities including pond dipping, nature’s recycling, wild bushcraft, a mini-beast hunt or a BioBlitz. Beverley Rhodes, of WildVolunteering, said: “After a successful pilot year last year we wanted to make WildScience available to more children across Derbyshire. “The activities can be held in a school or groups’ own grounds or a local green space or park, and children have a great time looking for mini beasts, ﬁnding out about trees, ‘alien invaders’ and biodiversity on their doorsteps.”

Trained students from the University deliver the wildlife educational activities, which are linked to the National Curriculum’s maths and science subjects, and encourage children to understand and enjoy outdoor spaces, wildlife and to get involved in biodiversity. Jason Nichols, Community Relations Assistant at the University of Derby, added: “This year we have over 30 students delivering projects in the community and across our schools. THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW ABOUT EASTER EGGS

Easter is here again, and very soon you will be tucking into a yummy chocolate egg (or 3). But here are some fun facts that you may not know about our favourite Easter Treat. • The tallest chocolate Easter egg ever was made in Italy in 2011. At 10.39 metres in height and 7,200 kg in weight, it was taller than a giraffe and heavier than an elephant! More than enough to share with your whole street. • 43% of kids say they eat their ﬁrst chocolate egg before Easter Sunday, but the average time for children to eat their ﬁrst Easter egg is 11 o’clock on Easter Sunday morning – a chocolate themed breakfast maybe? • In the UK alone, a whopping 90 million chocolate eggs are sold each year?

• Thirteenth-century Macedonians were the ﬁrst Christians known to use coloured eggs in their Easter celebrations. Crusaders returning from the Middle East spread the custom of colouring eggs, and Europeans then began to use coloured eggs to celebrate Easter and other holidays.

• Medieval Easter eggs were boiled with onions to give them a golden sheen. Edward I, however, went one better and in 1290 he ordered 450 eggs to be covered in gold leaf and given as Easter gifts. Very generous! • John Cadbury made his first Cadbury Easter egg in 1875. By 1892 the company was producing 19 different lines, all made from dark chocolate. But Cadbury didn‘t create the first chocolate Easter Egg – that was created by Fry’s in 1873. • According to goodnessdirect.co.uk 80 million chocolate Easter eggs are sold each year. This accounts for 10% of Britain’s annual spending on chocolate! • In medieval times, a festival of egg throwing was held in church, during which the priest would throw a hardboiled egg to one of the choirboys. It was then tossed from one choirboy to the next and whoever held the egg when the clock struck 12 was the winner and retained the egg. • In the UK, children receive on average 8.8 chocolate Easter eggs every year. • One in five children (19%) have made themselves ill because they have eaten too much chocolate during the holidays. Yuck!
