‘Experiences Your Children Will Never Have’
When chatting about our new Primary Times App and advances in technology in general, the PT team came to a startling realisation, we’ve experienced so many things that children today will know NOTHING about! Today’s society couldn’t imagine a world without smartphones, WiFi and access to most things at the touch of a button. We take so much for granted these days so we thought it would be fun to remind our readers of the days when our entire lives were not spent online. A typical morning started with children scrapping at the breakfast table over the toy inside the cereal box (remember those?) Televisions had no remote controlyou know, the ones where the kids were the remote control- and the number of TV channels was a single digit. It was a huge deal when Britain got Channel 5! Reality TV was a concept yet to be born and VHS tapes were how we recorded and watched our movies of choice. We’ve since come to depend on our trusty plasma TVs which bring a multitude of digital channels, high definition and even 3D viewing- no red and green spectacles required. www.primarytimes.net 6
Sleek games consoles have replaced their clunky predecessors and kids no longer have to blow the dust out of game cartridges in the hope that they might load. Today’s youth has the privilege of home entertainment full stop, rendering good old arcades useless. And what about the everyday things? Like not knowing who was on the other end of a telephone, or finding out information from an actual encyclopedia, or using a road atlas to get from A to B (come on, when was the last time you got lost anywhere?) Someone shouting the words,

“Google it!” is a regular occurrence here in the PT office, as I’m sure it is everywhere else. The internet has definitely revolutionised our culture and commerce. Shops and banks can be accessed at any time, any hour, and email, instant messaging, video chat and social networking are all immediate forms of communication since we no longer have to rely on dial-up connections! In the grand scheme of things it’s great to look back at the way things were, but a change is as good as a rest, right? Newspapers and magazines don’t have to come from dead trees anymore and a downloadable app is a nifty alternative. So why not give our new Primary Times App a go? It will be there for you come rain, shine or boredom. Whether you’re looking for a family day out, some general information, or a good book for the children to read (or, er... download), our free app is available from the Apple App Store and Google Play (for Android users). For more information go to: www.apple. com/itunes or www.play.google.com/ store/apps. We’d love to hear from our readers too, so if you guys have any particular memories you’d like to share then pop over to our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ PrimaryTimesWM or send us a tweet @ PrimaryTimesMid.

’ S N E D R A G T U O B A D L I W O G ‘ National Gardening Week 14-20 April What better place to ‘grow’ special family memories than in a garden? Think about it, gardening with your children at home or at a community garden not only provides the benefits of exercise and fresh food, it also fosters communication and builds stronger relationships. Everywhere you look you can see the signs of spring, so why not get started? Especially since it’s National Gardening Week, 14th - 20th April. Do something fun with the family! Whether you’re a nurturing newbie or greenfingered expert, get outdoors and enjoy green spaces together. National Gardening Week was launched by the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) three years ago and has since grown into the country’s biggest celebration of gardening. This year, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of RHS ‘Britain in Bloom’, they’ve dedicated the week to communities. You could even run your own National Gardening Week event, no matter how big or small, register it online at www. nationalgardeningweek.org.uk. Ever fancied throwing a garden party? Do you love your neighbourhood park or think your local street could do with a tidy up? There you go! A great way for you to get involved. Encourage your family, friends and neighbours to have a go too.

EASTER 2014 ISSUE
To celebrate the paperback release of Ratburger, the latest book by comedian and celebrated children’s author, David Walliams, we have three copies to give away (see com petition page). But what did the Primary Times team think of it? Here ’s our verdict… Things aren’t looking good for poor Zoe, the story’s main character. Her life is plagued by loneliness, plus her wicked stepmother Sheila and the local bully Tina Trotts, love to make her life a misery. Life in their crumbling old tower block is bleak until her furry little friend, Armitage comes along. This book is filled with hilarious char acters and we had lots of fun coming up with voices for them all! Walliams cleverly weaves some utterly gross moments with riotous wit and warmth. Then of course, we’re introduced to the villainous ‘Burger Van-Man’ Bert, who has his evil-eye on Zoe’s beloved pet rat! Or does he? The plot of the book is compelling and clever. Older children won’t want to put it down and younger children will be begging for “just one more chapter” before bedtime. The illustrations by Tony Ross also add a sprinkle of humour to this incre dibly enjoyable novel.
Why not download ‘Ratburger’ on audiobook (narrated by David Walliams himself!) from: ww w.audible.co.uk and let us know what you think.

SS Great Britain
Bristol ahoy! Bristol is one of the most family-friendly cities in the UK, packed with activities, award-winning attractions and exciting events for a great value Easter break. The Harbourside is one of the best places to start, with Bristol Aquarium and the multiaward winning At-Bristol Science Centre. AtBristol is one of the UK’s leading interactive science centres with more than 300 handson exhibits, live science shows and a fantastic planetarium. A hatchery in the centre’s Live Lab from 7 to 17 April means Easter visitors are in with a chance of seeing chicks hatch before their very eyes. Across the water is M Shed, the free entry museum that tells the history of Bristol through the memories and stories of people who have lived here. There are interactive exhibits, a family-friendly café and over the Easter weekend (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) visitors can enjoy a ride along the harbour on one of M Shed’s biggest exhibits; Henbury Steam Locomotive. It’s just a short ferry ride along the river to the multi award-winning Brunel’s ss Great Britain. Board the ship for a worldclass experience of Victorian history and engineering. From Saturday 5 April 2014, visitors will be able to re-enact working life at sea as part of ‘Go Aloft’ by scaling the ship’s rigging and conquering the yardarm for a unique and exhilarating view of Bristol more than 30metres above ground level. The Clifton area of Bristol is wonderful for families. A walk across the Clifton Suspension Bridge is a must for great views of the city, and this year the bridge is celebrating its 150th anniversary. Clifton is also home to the historic Bristol Zoo Gardens where the new £1m gorilla house gives visitors a 180-degree view of the gorillas and the unique experience of having a 32-stone Silverback Gorilla overhead.
For more encounters of the wild kind, Wild Place Project is around 30 minutes by road from the centre of Bristol and is home to exciting animals from Madagascar, east Africa and the Congo. At Easter, the new Wolf Wood enclosure opens, offering excellent views of six European Grey wolves and a chance to observe the pack’s natural social skills and youthful behaviour. Meanwhile African elephants can be seen at their new 20-acre habitat at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm in Wraxall. It’s the largest purpose-built elephant habitat in northern Europe. There are some great value family offers available over Easter for those planning overnight stays. Enjoy a weekend in luxury accommodation at Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel including B&B for two adults and two children (under 12) and attraction tickets for two adults and two children (under 12) to either Bristol Aquarium, At-Bristol or Bristol Zoo Gardens, from £201 to £217. The offer is also available at Bristol Marriott Hotel City Centre from £151 to £181.
