Join in all the spooky fun at Denby Visitor Centre during Half Term in the Wicked Witch’s cave. The cave has lots of spooky stuff, watch the Halloween Puppet show, then enjoy making and painting scary stuff to take home, plus lots more. Come along in fancy dress and have your face painted to complete the look! Sessions are at 11am, 1.15pm, and 2.30pm between 22nd October and 4th November (excluding 27th and 28th Oct). A MAGICAL STORY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY THIS CHRISTMAS Derby Theatre will cast a web of enchantment over the young and young at heart and present one of the most popular children’s stories of all time, E. We all know that fireworks can be great fun if handled responsibly, however we would encourage people to go to an organised event if possible rather than having fireworks in their own garden. If you do intend to have fireworks at home, do follow the safety code: • Keep fireworks in a closed metal box and take them out one at a time • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on each firework. Read the instructions by torch light and not a naked flame and always buy fireworks from a reputable source • Light fireworks at arm’s length using a safety firework lighter or fuse wick • Stand back after lighting • NEVER go back to a firework once lit, it may go off in your face • Keep a bucket of water handy • Collect used fireworks with care, douse with water and bury them or place in a metal container • Keep children under control • Keep pets indoors • Take care with sparklers – young children should not handle these www.primarytimes.net 6

If you must light a bonfire, follow these safety tips: • Site the bonfire well away from houses, garages, sheds, fences, overhead cables, trees and shrubs and well away from your fireworks • Before lighting, make sure there are no animals hiding inside • Be careful when building the bonfire, so it does not collapse once lit • Don’t burn foam filled furniture, aerosols or tins of paint or bottles • Never use flammable liquids – paraffin or petrol – to light the fire • Keep everyone, especially children, away from the fire • In case of emergency, keep buckets of water, a garden hose of a fire extinguisher ready • When the party is over, pour water on the embers before leaving

The event gives pupils the opportunity to work as a class team, using their skills in mathematics, problem solving and communication in competition with pupils of similar age and ability in other schools. The event raises money for the Latin American Street Children Organisation - a registered charity providing education and healthcare to South American Street children. Featuring over 1200 Theatretrain students from all over the UK, the gala performance was a resounding success. The 22 piece orchestra played a medley of different hits from the title track ‘Licence to Thrill’ to Shirley Bassey’s ‘Goldﬁnger’. The hits were infectious! The 600 strong choir sang and moved in time, soloists shone and the 600 performers told the story in unison. Students have been working on the project for the last 6 months which culminated in the arena of one the world’s most prestigious venues, the Royal Albert Hall. Next year you could have the chance to perform at the O2 in London for our 20th anniversary show spectacular!! Our open day is on Saturday 20th October. What’s On at QUAD

QUAD WORKSHOPS Derby’s centre for art and film QUAD will be holding some illuminating workshops for Families and Young People in October and November as part of the new season ‘LIGHT’. Some family activities entitled ‘Luminaria & Lanterns’ will offer a chance to design and create your own lanterns and luminaria from paper and card to light your way through the darker days of Winter. ‘Luminaria & Lanterns’ Family Activity takes place in QUAD on Saturday 3rd November, from 1:30pm until 3:30pm. The Family Activities are suitable for ages five and above and all those under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult and the cost is £3 per child or £10 for a family of four. Places are limited, so please book places through QUAD Box Office. In addition, QUAD will be hosting two giant ‘Camera Obscuras’. Camera Obscuras were the invention that started photography. These boxes capture light to project a reversed image of the view around you, allowing you to trace over the image, draw what you see or create portraits of family and friends. The Camera Obscuras will be in QUAD throughout October and are free for anyone to use, just climb inside and draw! There will also be a chance to make a Camera Obscura in November when participants can make one on their own or as a group with friends or family. The Camera Obscura Making Workshop takes place in QUAD on Saturday

The Celtic druids of ancient Ireland celebrated their New Year on November 1st with a festival called ‘Samhain’. Trick or treating can be great fun but you should remember that some people can ﬁnd trick or treaters knocking on their door frightening, so only go to people you know or who have a pumpkin lantern displayed. Get yourself a great costume – dressing up is part of the fun. Make sure you’ve put a lantern in the window and have some treats ready by the door for when your friends come knocking.

If you do go trick or treating, follow these safety tips • Never trick-or-treat alone, ideally have a grown up or at least 2 friends with you. • Carry a torch, wear a watch and tell someone what time you will be back. • On dark roads, make sure you are visible to cars. • Only accept treats in the doorway, NEVER go inside a stranger’s house. • Don’t throw ANYTHING at ANYONE!

Fill a large basin with water. Drop in several apples. Kneel or stand by the side of the basin with your hands behind your back. Take a deep breath and open your mouth wide. Now comes the bobbing. Try to grab the apple with your teeth.

Put a bowl of lemon juice on the table. Give each guest a toothpick or a paintbrush and a piece of paper. Each guest must dip their toothpick or paintbrush into the lemon juice and then write a message on the paper.When it is dry swap messages with each other. If you hold the paper in front of a light bulb, the letters will darken revealing the secret message.

Wrap a large (clean!) bowl or basin in black paper to make your cauldron & decorate. Fill the cauldron full of “witch’s brew.” Begin with a mixture of your favourite fruit juices, add some ﬁzzy water (or lemonade), add chunks of fruit (cut in star & moon shapes) and a few drops of green food colouring for an evil looking brew.
