THE KING FOUND IN A CAR PARK!

Where would you expect a King of England to be buried? In Westminster Abbey maybe? In any one of the many Cathedrals that are dotted around England? The grounds of a castle or Stately Home would be a suitable final resting place for a King. But a car-park in Leicester…you’ve got to be joking!

BACK TO SCHOOL 2013 ISSUE

The pit where Richard was found

So, who was King Richard III and what will happen to his bones now?

How they believe Richard would’ve looked in real life.

Richard’s death King Richard’s short reign was at the end of what we now call the ‘War of the Roses’. Richard was a member of the House of York, who, for over thirty years, had been involved with a constant battle for the throne with the Hou se of Lancaster. When Richard seized the throne, the Lancastrians decided the time was right for the m to try to claim the throne too. The Welshman Henry Tudor was the Lancastrian heir to the throne, and the armies of York and Lancaster met on the bat tlefield of Market Bosworth in Leicestershire. Richard was killed in the battle and Henry Tudor became Kin g Henry VII, the head of the Tudor dynasty. Richard’s body was thrown over a horse and taken to GreyFriars Church in Leic ester for burial. There was to be no grand memorial for the dead king. Henry was King now, and he did n’t really want Richard to be remembered at all, but if people did think of him, Henry VII wanted it to be as an evil tyrant, or a hunchback, but not as a king. So Richard was bur ied under the cold and dirty chu rch flagstones. When the church was destroyed in 1538 in the reign of the famous Henry VIII, Richar d’s grave went with it, to lie undiscovered until almost 500 years later.

The Princes in the Tower

Bad King Richard?

King Richard may only have been king for two years, but he is still one of the most famous English Kings of all. He stole the throne from his own nephew, the young Edward V, who was just 13 years old when he became King. Richard put the young King in the Tower of London with his younger brother Richard, and the young boys mysteriously disappeared, never to be seen again. The boys were called ‘The Princes in the Tower’, and it has long been believed that wicked King Richard had them killed. Richard suffered from a medical condition called Scoliosis, which meant that his spine was curved. Because of this, writers like Shakespeare said that King Richard had a hunchback, and portrayed him

So what now for Richard? Richard III will now finally get the burial fitting for a King of England. In fact, Richard was the last English king of England, the Tudors that followed were Welsh, next came the Stuarts who were Scots, and finally the Hanoverians who came from Germany. Maybe this is the reason so many places want to claim Richard as their own. There were plans to bury the King in Leicester Cathedral. This seemed sensible. After all, he had died in Leicester and had been buried there for almost 500 years, so Leicester Cathedral had a good case for claiming the king. But Richard was from the House of York, and so many believe that York would be a much more fitting resting place for the King. A group of Richard’s present day descendants say that Richard himself

as an ugly, scary looking man with evil eyes and a pointed nose. Paintings that made Richard look normal were altered to make his one shoulder much higher than the other to give him the famous hunchback look. The truth was that in person, people probably wouldn’t have noticed the slight curve, but the hunchback helped create a picture of Richard as an evil king. Richard had quite a sad life before his early death when he was only 33. His beloved wife Anne Neville died young, as did his only child, a son. He was betrayed many times by people who he believed to be his friends, and never really had a safe or happy time when he was King. Despite this, he was popular in the North of England, where people thought he was a wise and clever ruler.

would want to be buried in York. Richard was always popular in the area and had much affection for the place and the people. Richard was also the Duke of Gloucester before he became King, so maybe Gloucester could be another place for burial. Birmingham may even be a choice, as it has recently been suggested that Richard may’ve spoken with a West Midlands accent, and Birmingham has its own, perfectly good Cathedral. Whatever happens, and wherever Richard is eventually buried, it seems safe to say that the choice of place will be much grander, and much more suitable, than a council car-park in Leicester, although I think Richard will now always be known as the Car-Park King!

BACK TO SCHOOL 2013 ISSUE

www.primarytimes.net

But a car-park in Leicester is exactly where the bones of King Richard III, the king of England from 1483-1485, were found earlier this year. The council car-park had previously been the site of Greyfriars Church, and Richard had been buried in its grounds after his death at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. Greyfriars Church had been destroyed in 1538, and so the burial plot of the last English King of England had been lost, with only a few ancient clues as to where Richard might lie. But after excavation work last year bones and a skull were discovered, and special tests proved that, unbelievably, this was King Richard.

Pity the schools! Another new national curriculum has to be implemented in September 2014 and to make things worse - it was still in the consultation phase until August 2013. How can schools be adequately prepared? And how best can parents protect their children from the inevitable problems and arising confusions? Thinking clearly, the only way is to ensure they have an absolute understanding of all the main elements they need and are confident in their own abilities. One way to give children that secure grounding is at MagiKats where each individual is helped to develop true mastery, at their own pace. Visit www.magikats.co.uk or call 01332 756380.
