CHRISTMAS 2013 ISSUE
3
These are just some of the many ways to say Merry Christmas. But although children all over the world celebrate the birth of Jesus during December each year, and also look forward to the delivery of their Christmas presents, the person who delivers those presents is not always Father Christmas. Primary Times has come over all festive and has been looking at who brings Christmas cheer to children in some other countries. You might be surprised to hear that in one country, a witch is involved!
ITALY WELCOMES BEFANA In Italy the children wait until Epiphany, January 6, for their presents. According to tradition, the presents are delivered by a kind ugly witch called Befana on a broomstick. It was said that she was told by the three kings that the baby Jesus had been born, but she was busy and delayed visiting the baby. She missed the Star, lost her way and has been flying around ever since, leaving presents at every house with children in case the baby Jesus is there. She slides down chimneys, and fills stockings and shoes with good things for good children. But beware, it is said she leaves coal for children who are not so good.
Christmas in Holland
www.primarytimes.net 4
In Holland, it is St Nicholas who arrives early in November with his gifts. He is dressed in Bishop’s robes and journeys in a boat with his helper who is called Black Peter and who wears Spanish clothes. It is said that the pair live most of the year preparing lists of presents and writing every child’s behaviour in a very large book. Many people go to the Dutch Capital Amsterdam and visit the docks to greet him when he arrives. He then mounts a snow horse and rides through the streets in a great parade, amid many festivities. December 5th is Sinterklaas Eve or Sinterklass Eve, and presents are given and received.
CHRISTMAS 2013 ISSUE
Christmas in Spain In Spain, children think of the Three Wise Men are the gift bearers. Tradition has it that they arrive on January 6th, the same date the Wise Men gave their gifts to Jesus. The children of Spain receive gifts on the feast of the Epiphany. The Magi (as the Three Wise Men are sometimes known) are particularly loved in Spain. It is believed that they travel through the countryside reenacting their journey to Bethlehem every year at this time. Children leave their shoes on the window sills and fill them with straw, carrots, and barley, food for the horses of the Wise Men. The favourite Wise Man is Balthazar who rides a donkey and is the one believed to leave the gifts.
Christmas in Scandinavia In Scandinavia a little gnome called Julenisse puts the presents under the Christmas tree in the night. The children leave a bowl of porridge out for him.
Christmas in France French children receive gifts from Father Christmas, who is known as Pere Noel. He travels with his stern companion called Pre Fouettard. Pre Fouettard reminds Pere Noel of just how each child has behaved during the past year. In some parts of France Pere Noel brings small gifts on St. Nicholas Eve (December 6) and visits again on Christmas Eve. In other places it is le petit Jesus who brings the gifts. Generally adults have to wait until New Year’s Day to exchange gifts.

Steve McClaren unveils £500,000 grassroots sports facility in Derbyshire Former England and Middlesbrough FC Manager, and current Head Coach at Derby County FC, Steve McClaren, has officially unveiled the outstanding new changing pavilion in Ripley for Codnor Sports Charitable Trust, that was made possible thanks to a £310,353 grant from the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity. The new facilities will provide a much needed home for Codnor Boys Football Club, whose valuable contribution to the community has been somewhat hindered in recent years due to a total lack of local home ground facilities. The club currently have approximately 200 players involved across 12 teams ranging from Under-6s to Under-18s playing in various leagues and competitions, including a disability squad with coaches working closely with the Derbyshire County FA and Derby County FC Sport in the Community program to ensure they provide quality coaching. In 2007 the club became a registered ‘Deaf Friendly Football Club’. The club worked in partnership with the Derbyshire FA to secure a £310,353 grant from the Football Foundation towards the £505,084 project. Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, via Sport England, the Football Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity. Steve McClaren said: “This stunning new changing pavilion is great news for football in the area. Congratulations should go to the Codnor Sports Charitable Trust, the Football Foundation and the Derbyshire FA for their work in making it happen.”

CC: St Nicholas is fun to play as no one really knows what he was like as a man, there are no preconceptions, so you can start with a blank page. Apparently he used to leave gifts inside people’s shoes, so I like to think of him as a bit of a joker. But in our version, he’s like a cross between Omar Shariff and Russ Abbott. PT: Are you a fan of the Horrible Histories series? Do you have a favourite book from the series? CC: I love the Horrible Histories series of books and TV show. I have an 8 year old son who is also a big fan. Both of us especially like anything about the Tudors, as they were ruthless and nuts in equal measures! PT: Out of all the characters you play – do you have a favourite, and why? CC: Henry VIII, because I know the lines. PT: Is there a character from history you would love to play in the future? CC: I’d love to have a go at Richard III. Nothing like a bit of scheming, hunchbacked malevolence. PT: This is the story of Horrible Christmas – what do you think makes a perfect Christmas? CC: The perfect Christmas for me is defined by family. Having those I love close by and making it magical for my kids. An M&S turkey joint and a few sprouts wouldn’t hurt either. PT: Do you have a Christmas message for PT Derby readers? CC: Get stuffed!

Fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey—teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven—to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf (voice of Josh Gad), Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.
