F O D L R O W E TH N A M D AAR S N O I T ANIMA an interview with Peter Lord

www.primarytimes.net

Peter Lord is a legend in the world of animation, one half of the team behind Aardman Animations, Peter is responsible for the likes of Shaun the Sheep, Chicken Run, and, of course Wallis and Gromit. With his latest venture, The Pirates, an adventure with Scientists, currently residing in Birmingham Think Tank as an exciting interactive exhibition, Primary Times was lucky enough to get the opportunity to chat to Peter about all things animation.

4

SUMMER 2013 ISSUE

Visitors to Thinktank admire the Rare Creatures Dining Club from Pirates!

PT: The Pirates exhibition brings together the sets and puppets from the movie, where did you get the idea for a touring exhibition?

PT: What do you think makes this exhibition so special? PL: Two main things make this exhibition special. The first is the chance to look at the fabulous sets and models, and also the special behind the scenes films. The second is the interactive section. This is all about the ‘doing’ bit to inspire people to have a go at animation for themselves. Animation looks so complicated, but really anyone can get involved. PT: How difficult has it been transferring a successful film into an exhibition? PL: It has been difficult, but all credit to Thinktank who have really done all the work. We had all the beautiful sets, props and objects that could be shown, but needed ways to show and explain what really goes on behind the scenes, and needed this to be done in a fun and inspiring way. I think, through the videos and the interactive activities, this has been achieved. PT: What is your favourite part of the exhibition? PL: The Ship! It is an obvious answer, but I just love it. It is the most beautiful, fun thing. The shape is so beautiful, but it is also a fabulously, cartoony thing, with bits not quite finished and some amazing carvings. PT: Polly the Dodo is a very important part of the film, and now of the exhibition. Can you explain why to our readers? PL: We put Polly in the film as a joke, everyone believed Polly would be a parrot, but it is, in fact a Dodo who thinks she’ s a parrot. In the exhibition we have a very good stuffed dodo (although not a real stuffed Dodo of course). I think it is rather

Aardman Animations are the team behind such hits as Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep. mixture of natural voices and the cartoony looking creatures. But because the voices were not from actors, we had to wait ages for them to say something funny – it really did take some time! wonderful to be able to come and see the dodo, if not quite in the feathers! The ship is really full of a crew who are a band of misfits, so Polly really fits in well. PT: You talk a lot about inspiring young animators to have a go – what advice would you give to those who want to have a go? PL: The easy advice is to try it, just get started. When you first try animation you don’t need to plan, just get some playmobil, some lego and a camara – you can even do it on your pone these days. Start, and see the magic for yourselves. You actually make something live, something come to life. That alone should be enough to get you interested. PT: I think most people first became really aware of Aardman Animations through the Creature Comfort adverts. Where did the idea behind those ads come from? PL: We made a number of films in the 1980s, the big idea was to make plastic figures and make them look like they were talking, which was quite revolutionary then. We decided on animals and then thought ‘wouldn’t it be funny to use normal people’s voices to be the voices of the animals?’ There was just something really funny about the

PT: Wallace and Gromit have been supremely successful – was Wallace based on anybody? PL: Nick Parks (the main force behind Wallace and Gromit) always says that Wallace is sort of based on his own dad, because his dad was an inventor, just like Wallace in the films. PT: Are there any more plans for Wallace and Gromit? Any more plans for further movies maybe? PL: Yes, but not right now. One of the greatest things about animation and animated characters is that they never age. Animation never really grows old, which means you can wait for a while and then return to it. So yes we will return to Wallace and Gromit, but just not right now. PT: Do any of your characters or films have a particularly special place in your heart? Do you have a favourite? PL: Morph! It’s where I started and so I have huge affection for it. Morph never really gets old for me. PT: What’s next for Peter Lord and Aardman Animations?

PL: For Aardman, we are now doing some more episodes of Shaun the Sheep for our younger fans, we really love this character and are loving doing this. Even more exciting is that we are also preparing for a Shaun the Sheep movie, to come out in 2015. That is still two years away so it shows you what a slow process animation really is. We are also We have a family ticket (2 adults and two children) to give away for working on more films – so you Thinktank. This includes entrance to the Pirates! Exhibition. need to watch this space. Peter Lord: Well, when you make a film, it is made in a studio, and the studio becomes like an exhibition, full of beautiful things. We just decided that we would like to share the things with as many people as possible. The sets are just so fun and lovely, we thought it would be fun to share the experience.

School Success in September Starts in the Summer!

It’s that time of year again! Serious matters like exams alternate with school trips and Sports Days. Then it’s the LONG summer break. Continuity disappears! Ask any teacher and they will tell of the frustration of welcoming children back to school in September, only to find that they remember little of the work from two months earlier. MagiKats Maths and English runs throughout the summer to help keep brains active. Workshops and summer homework are fun and will save children from the fall back that happens between July and September. To find out more, visit www.magikats.co.uk or call 01332 756380.

KES - from the novel A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines Adapted by Lawrence Till Directed by Sarah Brigham Calling all parents of primary school kids! Remember the well-known, popular classic Kes from when you were at school? Derby Theatre is delighted to announce that it will produce and present the celebrated classic Kes, based on Barry Hines’ A Kestrel for a Knave, this autumn from Fri 13th September until Sat 5th October. Set against a northern backdrop, Kes is a well-known and much-loved book and film. A coming-of-age classic told with humour and warmth which continues to speak, and be relevant to, audiences of all

ages through its powerful story of struggle in a tough world. It’s 1960s Britain and daring to hope can be a dangerous thing. But ‘our Billy’ is brave enough to break free from the hardship, coal dust and the bullying he endures from his family and teachers. Adamant on embarking on a journey towards a brighter future, Billy realises his ambition of hope and freedom through his kestrel, Kes. Billy and Kes, through a shared aspiration to reach new horizons, form a unique bond through training, love and hope. But injustice and heartbreak impact on their journeys too, as Billy tragically discovers. For many; Kes is a story fondly remembered with nostalgia of a time studying the play at school and we look forward to presenting our exciting, yet faithful, version, from Lawrence Till’s adaptation, to new and existing audiences this autumn. Tickets: £10.50 - £25.50. School and group rates also available. For more information and to book tickets call the Box Office on 01332 59 39 39 or online at www.derbytheatre.co.uk.

Derby Market place is playing host to Derby by the sea (Thursday 25th July – Thursday 1st August 2013) promising ice creams, Punch and Judy shows and a traditional fairground Helter Skelter. All you need to remember is your bucket and Spade. Also with a traditional seaside theme, you can experience the Pottery Beach at Denby Visitors Centre (Monday 15th July until Sunday 8th September.) You can enjoy the safe golden sand and free entertainment, or browse the beach hut shops.

BLAKE Quentin’s illustrations are legendary. Who can forget those pencil sketches of Mr and Mrs Twit, all scruffy hair and untidy beards, their stench positively oozing out of the page? Or the BFG, tall certainly, but with the sort of kindly face you instantly know you can trust to look after the tiny Sophie. Quentin has said of his illustrations ‘I do freewheeling sort of drawing that looks as though it is done on the spur of the moment.’ Of course, Quentin has also created the illustrations for his own stories, including the fantastic ‘Mrs Armitage on Wheels’, where the wonderfully wacky heroine adds numerous items to her simple bicycle leading to its

eventual demise. Undeterred, she swaps the broken bike for a pair of roller skates and continues her journey.

Europe. They include the ‘Welcome to Planet Zog’ series which shows young people and aliens experiencing a hospital environment. This was commissioned for a young people’s mental health centre in Harrow, 2007 and is full of quirky characters, both human and alien, including a child in a motorised chair that looks suspiciously like a prototype based on Mrs Armitage’s bike… The exhibition is well worth a look, for both the young and the young at art. With over 50 pieces of artwork on show, this is a great opportunity to really enjoy the work of an illustrative genius all under one roof.

A rich visual history, to be sure. But, this summer, Quentin Blake is showing yet another side to his talent, and this time the artwork promises to be ‘larger than life.’ Selected museums and Art galleries will be displaying a collection of Quentin Blake’s latest artworks in a new exhibition, Quentin Blake: As Large as Life.

The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry: 27 July - 3 November 2013

These large scale artworks are unmistakeably Blake in their style, but have been commissioned to decorate public spaces, mainly hospitals and care settings, all over

When Primary Times asked a series of celebrities what their favourite childhood story was, an overwhelming number named a book by Roald Dahl. ‘The Twits’, ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ and ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ were all mentioned as favourites, and all of these books benefited enormously from the illustrations of the great Quentin Blake, who this summer is taking a very special exhibition around the UK.

t h g i e Overw MAKING A CHANGE THIS SUMMER

When we think of pets, we usually think of fit, active animals, constantly running around, taking walks and generally keeping on the move. From dogs chasing cats, Tom chasing Jerry and rabbits bunny hoping all around the garden, our pets sometimes give us lessons in keeping fit and healthy. But there are some pets who this does not apply to, and so a group of dogs, cats and rabbits with a combined weight of 30 stone are this summer going to take part in a pet slimming competition!

six-month diet and exercise programme put together by the veterinary charity the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) .

The Fat Club for overweight pooches, kitties and bunnies has a line-up of 13 dogs, five cats and three rabbits, who will be taking part in the

And Mizzy and Ulric aren’t the only pets who need help with their diet and exercise. We also have the Chinese takeaway loving Staffordshire

The ‘Pet Fit Club’ includes a huge Bullmastiff dog called Mizzy, and Ulric, an overweight cat, who have a combined weight of over 80kg! Can you imagine the amount of food these animals must consume every single week? Ulric is more than double his ideal weight, which makes for a very unhealthy cat, whilst massive Mizzy is 72kg, making her a dog desperately in need of a diet plan.

So why is it important to keep your pets slim? Why should you not be giving your animals titbits and why is exercise just so important? Elaine Pendlebury, PDSA senior veterinary surgeon, explains: “Obesity is one of the biggest welfare issues affecting pets in the UK today - and it is entirely preventable. Sadly, it also means daily misery for millions of pets who are feeling the strain from carrying too much weight. So, maybe this summer your own pet needs a new start. Walking the dog is also great exercise for you too. Cats should not be eating Chinese takeaways, and you can give your rabbit a touch of fresh air and fitness in an outdoor rabbit run. After all, it is never too late to change your pet’s ways.

Bull Terrier, Beetlejuice, who weighs in at 44kg, Labrador Tia, from Birmingham, who weighs 58.2kg, almost double the weight a Labrador should be, and Prince, a cat with a craving for ice cream which has had a serious effect on his waistline. One of these big pets will win the title of PDSA Pet Fit Club slimmer of the year, but hopefully all the pets involved will finish the competition slimmer and healthier.
