CHRISTMAS 2013 ISSUE

on presenter, style gur u and talented Gok Wan is a man of many talents. Televisi anything the man can’t turn his hand TV cook, there really doesn’t seem to be ut in Snow White at the Birmingham too. And now, on the eve of his panto deb es about his love of panto, cooking and Hippodrome, Gok chatted to Primary Tim Christmas. why there will be no Gok makeovers this PT: Gok, you’re playing The Man in the Mirror at the Birmingham Hippodrome this Christmas, can you tell us a little bit about your character? GW: I’m basically like the narrator of the pantomime. You all know the classic line ‘Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?’ Well, I’m the one who gives all the answers, and also gives the answers that the wicked Queen doesn’t like that starts everything off… PT: This is your first time in panto, is this something you’ve always wanted to do? GW: Yes, it is actually. I’ve always loved Panto, and I did train as an actor. I went to a Panto every year, it was a bit of a family tradition, so I always hoped I might get chance to have a go one day. PT: Why did you choose Birmingham for your first Panto Performance?
www.primarytimes.net 6
GW: I met up with a production company and they asked where I would like to go. I said Birmingham. I have family close by in Leicester so being in Birmingham was ideal for a special Midlands family Christmas. PT: How are you finding rehearsals? GW: I’ve had a couple of singing lessons and all I can say is tragic, but can you believe the rehearsals haven’t actually started yet? We start on December 2nd which only gives us two weeks to learn everything. I must admit that I love the idea of this though, concentrating on learning everything and the opportunity to work with a group of new people. I’m loving having to learn something so quickly and thoroughly. It is scary but exciting too. CHRISTMAS 2013 ISSUE
PT: Which of the other charactors in the panto do you think is most in need of a Gok makeover? GW: Are you kidding me. None of them. We have Stephanie Beacham, one of the most glamorous and stylish actresses around. We have the very handsome and stylish John Partridge, the pantomime legend Gary Wilmot, such a fantastic cast. And the costume designer Ron Briggs – well, his designs are just incredible. There’ll be no Gok makeovers this Christmas! PT: Did you have a fave panto as a child? GW: My fave panto was Jack and the Beanstalk. I always liked the idea of this one, all the twists and turns. I can remember seeing it a few times as a child. I remember seeing it at the Haymarket, Leicester, when it was still there. PT: You’ve been involved in lots of children’s charities – Kidscope, Children in Need, Wellchild – why are these important to you? GW: I think I’ve got quite an influential role, especially in things like dealing with self-confidence, so I feel I have a social and public responsibility to help the next generation in areas that I can. This includes things like eating disorders, issues of selfesteem and especially body image. PT: You often speak out strongly about bullying, especially linked to body image. What advice would you give to a child, or young adult who is currently in a bullying situation? GW: I would say you need to find your voice. Find someone who you can trust to talk to, a parent, a friend, a teacher. You need to realise it is not your
fault. Bullies often make you thing it is your fault, but that just isn’t true. PT: Now you’ve tried your hand at panto, do you see yourself trying some serious acting? GW: I’m not sure, probably not at the moment. Probably see how the panto goes. That said, if someone foolishly offered me a role in something fabulous then I wouldn’t say no, but I don’t think that’s going to happen! PT: You’re always so busy, TV, Fashion , design, cooking, do you ever have any spare time, and how do you spend it? GW: I just love cooking. I love playing host and having friends over for dinner, it makes me really happy. I do have a social life outside of work, I allow myself this now. I never used to take time off but now I do and I just love to cook for and entertain friends. PT: Describe a Gok Christmas. GW: A Gok Christmas is all about family and food. It involves not getting dressed – just a fresh pair of pyjamas. It’s happy, I go back to being a child again with a large tin of Quality Street, lot s of Christmas television and lots of fun. PT: Do you have any New Years resolutions? GW: Yes, try not to work as much and to take on fewer projects. To take time to wind down and relax. I will still be on TV, but will relax a little more. PT: Do you have an end of year message for Primary Times readers? GW: I hope you’ve all had an incredible year. I hope you’ve succeeded, learned and developed as young people. Remember, next year could be even better!

Young Heroes Treated To A Special Christmas Party On average Midlands Air Ambulance airlifts a child every four days, often in life or death situations. To acknowledge the bravery of these young heroes, the charity is hosting a very special Christmas party on Saturday 14th December. On the day, which will be hosted at one of the service’s operational airbases, the young heroes will have the opportunity to be reunited with members of the aircrew who attended their incidents. In addition, the charity is inviting some very special guests to help make the festive party one to remember. The Young Airlift Heroes’ Christmas Party is free to attend and open to everyone under the age of 16 who has been rescued by the Midlands Air Ambulance in the past three years. Those interested in attending are invited to get in touch with the charity to book their place, and families of the airlift heroes are welcome to come along and join in the celebrations. If you or a child you know has been airlifted by the Midlands Air Ambulance and would like to attend the Young Airlift Heroes’ Christmas Party, then please get in touch with events co-ordinator Michelle McCracken by calling 0800 8 40 20 40. CHRISTMAS 2013 ISSUE
If you thought drama classes were just full of kids who wanted to be the next Harry Potter, think again. Many parents and young people have realised that the real benefit is the increased confidence and improved communication skills that such sessions offer. Performing arts education, like that which can be gained at the Pauline Quirke Academy, has a wonderful effect on young people and the success stories are impressive. Children who were once incredibly shy have not only put their hands up in class for the first time, but have then gone on to achieve previously unthinkable feats, such as singing in front of an audience or presenting to a room of their peers. And while young children learn essential life skills like listening and responding effectively, canny teenagers with an eye on their future know that the ability to engage any audience, especially at a University or job interview, can give you the edge in a very competitive world. To book a free taster session, or for more information please visit our website www.pqacademy.com or call us on 0845 673 2022.

Mike the knight: a very knightly christmas
FROZEN Walt Disney Animation Studios, the studio behind “Tangled” and “Wreck-It Ralph,” presents “Frozen,” a stunning big-screen comedy adventure. Fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey—teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven—to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf (voice of Josh Gad), Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.
Discover the world of Glendragon this Christmas and enjoy more knightly adventures than ever, in this new two disc DVD collection from CBeebies favourite, Mike the Knight. Available from Monday 21 October, Mike the Knight: A Very Knightly Christmas includes six fun and festive episodes. It’s Christmas Eve in Glendragon and one of Santa’s reindeer is sick. Mike makes it his mission to save Christmas and does everything he can to nurse the reindeer back to health, making sure he is included on Santa’s ‘nice’ list. Meanwhile, Mr Cuddles is sent on a wild toboggan ride, Squirt gets stuck in a giant snowball and Mike learns that Vikings like to have fun in the snow too. Little knights-in-training can also follow in the footsteps of their medieval hero with a host of DVD extras. This includes a fun modern day version of the chivalrous code and a sing-along theme tune. Mike the Knight: A Very Knightly Christmas also comes with a special bonus DVD, Mike’s Hidden Treasure, containing six additional episodes. Huzzah!
