Opening up about his new KARL creation, the fashion legend recently told Vogue magazine: “It’s a graphic idea of what I like, what could be translated from me to girls. It’s very graphic: black and white, silver and grey. Chanel is me doing Chanel, Fendi is me doing Italy and this is me doing me, whatever that means.” Mr Lagerfeld came to London to launch the collection with a party at Selfridges on Oxford Street. Surrounded by fans and celebrities, he said: “The drama of this collection, it’s an inspiration. In a way, it’s me so I have to be careful not to get too into it because I don’t expect everybody to dress like me, you know. That’s why I like this collection with the t-shirt to make a joke out of me, because I think I am a cartoon. I think inspiration is a muscle, and this muscle has to be used all the time. The more you do the more ideas you have. I don’t believe in waiting for inspiration. If you think about department stores, there are not so many, you know, worldwide. Selfridges is one of them.”

beautiful fabrics, fine wool dresses, oversized sequins – but also shows the kind of edgy glamour we’ve come to expect from the Lagerfeld atelier. Biker jackets, embellished accessories and high-shine patent leather all lend the line a dark vibe, that makes the collection perfect for grown-up women who like a little rock-chick with their sleek tailoring. Proving the wit of Mr Lagerfeld, there are even supercool t-shirts bearing the designer’s face.

The KARL collection sits alongside another quirky new launch from Mr Lagerfeld - Team Karl - in a cool pop-up shop inside Selfridges. The range was inspired by the Olympic Games, and features the gold, silver and bronze colours of the medals in all of its designs. For A/W ’12, Farrell further explores its British history for a collection deeply rooted in military themes, taking inspiration from utilitarian silhouettes infused with British-made fabrics. Continuing to build on the core strength of Farrell’s outerwear this season, the new pieces have exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship, producing contemporary takes on classic styles, rich in heritage. New for the season is the poacher’s Jacket, featuring an outer-shell wax cotton produced in a British Millerain, in Yorkshire. Military references are everywhere in the range. There’s a military control trench-coat, with historical dome buttons and made of traditional compacted dense wool, to repel water and keep in heat. Farrell continues its partnership with the iconic British milliner Christy’s, as hats get added to the collection: Melton Wool and super-fine felt foldaway trilbies, which will sit alongside the existing baker boy styles. He’s reunited with Take That and toured the globe in a fabulous comeback show, got married, worked on a new album and is about to become a father any day now. The reformed bad boy also found time to launch his own fashion line last year, menswear label Farrell, and this season, the new autumn/winter collection has arrived in Birmingham, exclusively at Selfridges. Robbie, who confesses to having always had a keen interest in fashion, says that Farrell was inspired by Jack Farrell, his grandfather. A notable sharp dresser, he was known as Jack the Giant Killer, and was a strong man who had great integrity, honesty, good manners and a sense of humour. It is these qualities that Robbie wanted to form the foundation of Farrell and they’re now ingrained into the brand ethos at

every level, from the way design ideas take shape to the way the clothes are presented on the shop floor. The debut Farrell collection launched in September 2011, and became an instant hit. Farrell is unmistakeably British, with a strong respect for classic Savile Row tailoring. Who is the Farrell man? Designed for men who like a perfect fit and a little flair in their clothing, Farrell delivers classic wardrobe staples suitable for a night in, an afternoon at the footie or a night out. ‘Wear it in, wear it out’ is Farrell’s motto. Every piece within the Farrell collection is designed to become a longstanding part of a man’s wardrobe, growing and evolving with the wearer over time. Robbie wanted the label to be very British, very elegant, and witty too: the must-haves of the collection are neat coats: frock coats, pea, wool overcoats and the timeless Harrington. As the design team see it,

THE CREATIVE TEAM When it comes to his own label, only the best creative minds will do for Mr Williams. In November last year former Burberry Design Director Ben Dickens joined Farrell as Head of Design. Ben now works hand in hand with Robbie to develop collections and expand the brand season on season. Robbie Williams told us: “Ben Dickens arrived bringing his optimism, passion and vision to my granddad’s clothing line. The more we talk, the more ideas we throw around - it’s exciting. It’s very similar to making an album: after all that’s what an album is. It’s an idea. What is art? It’s an idea, as are clothes. We are at the tip of an iceberg, and it is an iceberg. Model hosts Adele Rushton and Jamie Roche talk awards, modeling and Birmingham How did you get involved in the MFDA? Adele: We both attended the show in 2010 and were intrigued as to what the awards were about. I whispered to Jamie, “I love this show! We need to be involved in it next year!” What do you love about hosting the awards? Adele: The whole involvement from start to finish. Jamie: It’s great that we have awards like this in Birmingham. There is nothing else like it providing a spectacular platform for emerging designers, with fantastic prizes and benefits. What format does the night follow? Adele: We start with a warm up act, a welcome and introduction to the awards by myself and Jamie, then straight into the show itself. Being a couple, do you like working together? Adele: A good percentage of our work is together. I think clients like the fact that our interaction is believable and natural. Jamie: We’ve got some amazing stories from our adventures together! Do you feel pressure to be stylish all the time?

Adele: I try to be as stylish as I can, but effortless at the same time. It’s not always easy, but I do feel that in our line of work it’s important to be well polished and groomed. Jamie: Not really because we both love fashion and everything that surrounds it, from the glamorous events to being styled head to toe. If you weren’t a model, what would you be? Adele: A vet. I love animals and have a strong passion for animal welfare. Jamie: I did all sorts before I modeled, from pizza delivery boy to rough and ready scaffolder, so I’d probably be in someone’s garden pruning the bushes! What do you like about Birmingham? Adele: I know if I need an outfit for a special occasion or event I can pop into Birmingham and know I won’t come out empty handed. Jamie: The shopping and the nightlife. I lived in London for a short time, and Birmingham is just as cosmopolitan but on a smaller scale. Favourite shop? Both: Selfridges. You can get everything under one roof. Favourite bar? Both: Apres in Summer Row, then on to Mechu where the party starts. Favourite restaurant? Adele: We went for a lovely romantic meal at Pushkar on Broad Street recently. The food is traditional and authentically Indian. Jamie: Marco Pierre White in The Cube. It definitely has the wow factor and the views are immense.

TOP TREND FOR THE SEASON … THE ROARING TWENTIES The trends we’re loving this season are being influenced less by the runway, and more by iconic movies; fitting the hairstyle into a story and a lifestyle. One of our favourite looks is that of the 1920s, the first era of the celebrity icon. Expressive and statement looks were crucial at this time, with clothing and hairstyles defining the individual. We’ve used this look for our inspiration in salon to create modern yet vintage inspired hairstyles. Short bobs with soft waves are key for women, whereas the men’s look is very groomed with an edge. The key to getting this preppy look just right isn’t just about having a comb in the top-pocket, but getting the haircut right by either working the undercut very high or very low; there’s no room for anything in between. A perfect example is Leonardo DiCaprio in the Great Gatsby film, and Chanel’s pastel twist on the classic bob. These looks capture everything we love about this iconic period of The Roaring Twenties.

I remember watching all of the big supermodels on George Michael’s ‘Freedom’ video when I was growing up, and thinking how beautiful and different all the girls were. I used to sit in my house in the Eastend getting lost in Vogue magazine too – it was real escapism and a huge inspiration for embracing who you are and accepting your differences. It was in my early to mid-20s that I began to get the guts to try more things out and I had real fun trying! As an actress, the dressing-up box thing has never left me.

I’d love to keep doing things that I’ve never done before and finding things that fulfil me. I’d love my own chat show, more TV stuff and more novels. It would be great to do some gigs again, even if they weren’t successful, I just love music.

Siobhan Carlill asks ‘What’s the one item in your wardrobe that you can’t be without?’ I love French style and fashion, so for me it has to be a vintage beaten-up biker jacket over a beautifully embellished gown. This season I’m also loving leather skirts –I’ll wear mine A-line with a tight black polo neck – it’s just something staple that you can make work for both day and night. I can’t wait to get stuck into the A/W collections at Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and Topshop – one of my all-time favourites is Zara – if that store closed I would cry!

Jeanette Hubbard asks ‘Which celebrity would you most like to do a style makeover on?’ It would have to be Rachel Riley from Countdown. She’s so beautiful but I just want to rock and sex her up a bit. It wouldn’t be right for her job, but I think a rustled-up look after-hours would be fabulous. Martina Honeyghan asks ‘How would you define Birmingham?’ Birmingham’s a very eclectic city – it’s definitely getting recognised and is standing up to be counted. My old PA was from Birmingham and he always used to say that he was so proud of the city, but it needed to be proud of itself. That was over 10 years ago now, but being here and involved in such a major fashion event, it really feels like that’s now happening – I think he’d be happy! issue 30

UNDERCOVER STORY If you’ve already started making plans for party season, you’ll be glad to hear that Boux Avenue in Bullring is launching a limited edition lingerie collection with Swarovski crystals this October. Lisa Shepherd has made her name by helping people achieve the perfect look through their hair. By selecting the right hair colour, she genuinely made people look 10 Years Younger. I simply had to pay Lisa a visit to see if she lived up to her amazing reputation and could transform my sun-damaged hair into luscious autumn locks. From the second you walk through the door of Lisa Shepherd’s salon, you are greeted with a smile, a ‘how are you today’ and a fridge full of juices, wines and beers to quench your thirst. All this and much more tells you you’re not just in for a haircut; you’re in for a real treat. You’re led through to the beautiful salon area in which Lisa has preserved the ornate ceiling of the bank that the building housed before – the ceiling also makes a handsome view when leaning backwards over the basin.

She will not just choose one colour and slap it on your hair; she mixes several colours together to get the specific shade desired … that’s why they call her the Colour Whisperer. While my base colour was doing its job, I was led through to the waiting area where a coffee machine awaited. Select a magazine from the rack (Style Birmingham, perhaps?) or surf the net on one of the customer iPads while you sip the beverage of your choice and relax in the comfortable chairs.

Strands of hair were intricately selected to receive the blonde colour and I was offered another drink while I waited. Once my highlights had taken, my hair was washed again and I was given a conditioning treatment to enhance the shine of my hair. As the treatment was working, I was given the chance to experience the luxury of a massage. I sincerely urge everyone who goes to the Lisa Shepherd salon to accept this offer. The massage chair sends relaxing waves down your body, relieving any tension that you may have left in you, while a trained member of staff gives you a deep scalp massage. You will drift away into a state of complete relaxation – not something I thought I could achieve mid-afternoon on a Thursday. She started by mixing colours together to create my base – this is the first colour they put on which is intended to look as natural as possible. My natural colour is a rather dark brown, so Lisa suggested I go for a slightly lighter colour with highlights. Lisa gives off an air of experience that makes you trust her implicitly with the future of your treasured tresses, so I agreed. Lisa refuses to follow the ‘rules of colour’, tailoring each shade to the individual sat in the chair.

September is here and the fashion world is rolling into action with new collection launches for autumn/ winter. Farrell, the menswear label by Robbie Williams and his design partner Ben Dickens launched their autumn winter collection in Selfridges at the end of August. On his design process, Robbie said: “I see myself as a DJ of clothes. I remix things that I like – it’s a lot like music. I know what I like – every piece in the collection is based on pieces from my own wardrobe which I love.” Inspired by his grandfather Jack Farrell, the brand is about heritage and Savile Row inspired pieces like the olive wool Great Coat with dome buttons £325, perfect for the military trend going on this season, the waxed Poacher Jacket and fine felt Foldaway Trilby. Another quintessentially British brand, Hackett London opened their concession in Birmingham’s House of Fraser in August. I get very excited about ‘made’ stuff. I wrote a book a couple of years ago called Principles of Home where I asked people to really appreciate and value the craftsmanship of the ‘made’ world. Everything on this planet gets me excited, from dams to space rockets, coat hangers to spoons. Everything is designed and built by people, individuals who are passionate and talented; people who have one brain and a pair of hands. Whether you’re an engineer, a designer or a maker of spoons, it is those two hands and that brain that make the difference between us and the rest of the planet. Without that, we’d all be living in caves! Presenting wasn’t something I planned. I was asked if I would go on television and talk a bit about lighting once. Then they asked me back to do a bit more, and a bit more and then they asked me if I would talk about colour and pigment and then furniture and they just kept asking me back! Then Grand Designs came along; it’s given me a huge audience and I’m grateful for that. Grand Designs has been going for 13 years, and in the new series this autumn we will be filming our 100th episode. It coincides with the Grand Designs Live exhibition in Birmingham, so we’ll be celebrating at the show! At Grand Designs Live 2012, we have loads of exciting things going on including a Nano Village which is a celebration of some of our best projects in model form. Grand Designs is in the best health it has ever been. I’ve also got a book coming out this autumn as well as some really exciting projects. People often ask me what kind of house I live in. Well, my house is old, crumbling and falling apart! I’ve done lots of things to make it more comfortable, but I’m a building conservationist at heart so I’ve put in things like secondary glazing

and insulated everywhere I possibly can without damaging the fabric of the building. I’ve also put in biomass and solar panels. I try to be as off-grid as possible. I drive a little diesel Volvo, a thrifty little C30; you could call it an ‘eco’ car. I do try to live a relatively ‘green’ life, but we all have an impact. You can’t be invisible on the planet, you can just try and be a bit more frugal. The Green Deal government scheme is being detailed this autumn. Retrofitting our existing homes to low carbon standards is just about the most significant thing we can do. There are 26 million existing homes in the UK. It doesn’t matter how many new ‘green’ homes we build; it’s getting our existing homes to be low energy, low carbon and low resource that’s got to be the important thing. February 2013 will see an outline of finance packages that will be available to homeowners. It’s a very exciting offer from the government as it means grant aid is available so that the homeowner doesn’t pay for upgrades. At Grand Designs Live we have a couple of seminars explaining exactly how

The Green Deal is going to roll out that will be very useful to listen to. We Brits are great leaders in engineering, but we need to demonstrate to the world that, as the cradle of the industrial revolution, we have the drive and the passion to also be the cradle of the post-industrial revolution. People continue to build the most amazing variety of projects in the most remarkable places, each one with a different story. I’m constantly amused at how varied they all are. That’s the secret of Grand Designs; if it was just a design series we would have great difficulty, but architecture unfolds in so many different ways that it makes the stories more interesting. My favourite ever Grand Designs was Ben Law in the woods in Sussex. He made his own house of timber that he felled. It was such an elegant film about sustainability, a lovely story and a beautiful building in the end. The most disastrous would have to be the boat in Medway which I think is now floating somewhere in the North Sea! As for Birmingham’s ‘grand designs’, The Cube certainly caught my eye. It’s a very exciting building. Ken Shuttleworth’s design was extremely radical. I’ve visited the new library a couple of times too. It’s huge! It’s going to be extraordinary inside with the central space and the atrium which is good because it will encourage people to go inside; that’s where the true architectural experiences will lie. My favourite building in the world is the Library of Celsus in Ephesus, Turkey. It’s a façade of a Roman building that’s just very beautiful. Grand Designs Live is at the NEC from October 12-14. ArtsFest draws in the crowds

This recipe for rich, fudgy brownies studded with juicy raspberries, nuts and white chocolate chunks was created using Divine chocolate by Linda Collister, author of Makes 24 pieces the BBC’s Great British Bake Off cook books

You’ll need:

What to do:

Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas 4, fan 160. Prepare a 28 x 18cm x 2.5cm deep brownie tin or baking tin. Grease tin and line with greaseproof 100g unsalted butter, paper. Break up the dark chocolate into squares at room temperature and put into a heatproof bowl set over a pan 200g caster sugar of hot, but not boiling, water, making sure the 4 large free-range eggs, base of the bowl does not touch the water. Leave at room temperature to melt stirring occasionally. Remove the bowl from the pan. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Whisk the butter and sugar together in a bowl using an electric whisk until light and fluffy. 60g plain flour Gradually add the eggs, beating well after each 60g Divine Cocoa addition. Add vanilla extract, melted chocolate Powder and stir in gently using a spatula. Sieve the flour 50g pecan nuts, and cocoa into the bowl then fold in the nuts chopped and white chocolate pieces until the mixture is evenly blended. Spoon half the mixture into 1 x 100g bar Divine the prepared tin and spread evenly. Scatter the White Chocolate raspberries over the top of the brownie mixture, chopped 150g fresh raspberries top with remaining mixture and spread evenly. 2 x 100g bars Divine Dark Chocolate

Bake for 30-40 minutes until the mixture feels firm when pressed. Remove from the oven and cool in the tin on a wire rack. When cold cut the brownie into 24 squares. To buy Divine and see more of their chocolate recipes visit www. divinechocolate.com

500g pumpkin (or butternut squash) peeled, deseeded and cut into 1cm thick slices

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas 6.

1 red onion, sliced 2-3 sprigs fresh thyme 2 tbsp olive oil 200g Tenderstem, cut into 4cm lengths 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 x 375g pack puff pastry 2 tbsp pine nuts 4 tbsp creme fraiche Freshly ground black pepper and sea salt

2. Put the pumpkin, red onion and thyme in a roasting tin and pour over the olive oil. Toss to mix well and roast in the oven for 15 minutes. Then add the Tenderstem and garlic to the roasting tin, mix through and roast for a further 5 minutes. 3. Take a heavy bottomed baking sheet and line it with baking parchment. Roll out the pastry to form a flat sheet, and cut into 4cm squares. When the filling is spoon a small amount into the centre of each pastry square. 4. Sprinkle over the pine nuts, dot little blobs of creme fraiche over the surface and season with freshly ground black pepper and a little sea salt. Bake in the oven for around 10 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve with a simple green salad.

J e n n i f e r Wa l k e r w e n t t o s a m p l e t h e c u i s i n e Itihaas Brasserie is the new venture from the owners of Itihaas fine dining restaurant in the Jewellery Quarter. It maintains every inch of the fine dining feel in the quality of the food, but in a more accessible, ‘fast-food’ style environment, convenient for shoppers and diners alike. On a rather wet and windy British August evening, two of Birmingham’s greatest Indian food lovers dined at the brand new Itihaas Brasserie in Selfridges. Greeted by the friendly faces of eager-to-please waiters and chefs who, you can tell, would do anything to make your dining experience one you will never forget, we settled in and soon became blissfully unaware of the shoppers darting around behind our backs. We started with a glass of Las Condes Chardonnay from Chile (£3.40 glass, £14.50 bottle) to ease us in to the task ahead: deciding what to order. We chose to share a couple of the Mumbai street food plates to start to get the best possible experience of Itihaas. Dahi puri is a dish of crispy wheat shells with deggi mirch, spiced potato and chickpeas with onion, tomatoes, sweetened yoghurt and tamarind water.

The delicate, crispy shells with the sweet yoghurt and tomato blended beautifully with the heat from the deggi mirch spice and the texture of the chickpeas. A real feast for the taste buds. We also tried the chicken samosas, which were packed with garam masala, spiced chicken, cumin peas and sweet onions and were quite possibly the tastiest samosas I have ever eaten. All Mumbai street food dishes are £4.99 each. Try three for £12.99 or four for £16.49. We decided to choose from the grills and kebabs menu for our mains, my friend opting for the lamb tikka and me trying the grilled salmon. The lamb tikka (£8.49) was succulently grilled on a tandoor with cumin and yoghurt, a pickled salad, mint dressing and chutney, all served on a chic slate plate. If you like spicy meat, you will love the lamb tikka dish. The grilled salmon in a banana leaf (£9.49) was cooked to perfection with a melt-inthe-mouth consistency, coated in mustard seed and turmeric citrus with a pickled salad, mint dressing and chutney. From the sides menu we chose a portion of the Bombay scented mogo chips (£3.50), citrus and red chili Cassava chips with a tamarind water dip, a perfect accompaniment to

any Indian dish. The superb presentation of these dishes prevents you from wanting to break in to eat, but once you have admired the look, you will be even more taken aback by the taste. Too full for dessert, we decided not to force any more food down. Instead, the attentive chef took us round to see the ‘takeaway’ section of the restaurant where shoppers can stop by to take home some tasty treats. We gratefully accepted some Indian sweets to enjoy on the ride home including a caramel and pistachio slice and a coconut square. Itihaas literally means ‘history’ in Hindi. That is exactly what you get to sample at the exciting new Brasserie in Selfridges Birmingham, a piece of Indian history. Choose from the vast menu of Mumbai street food, chat and dosa (Mumbai snack food), Middle Eastern wraps, curries, grills and kebabs, and form your own opinion of the divine land of India. All dishes are prepared in front of your eyes and cooked to order so you can be sure everything is fresh and how you like it. INTRODUCING CAUSE N EFFECT Cause n Effect are local due Chris Laurence & Kane. Their array of fun, energetic, party orientated house, garage and disco has developed their large following in the city and led to regular appearances around the UK.

We started out seven years ago under the alias Dub Melitia. We got together in the studio one day and started churning out 140bpm bass heavy dub tracks; little did we know that things would take off and a few months down the line we were playing in clubs all across the UK. A few years went by and in 2009 we found GLAS, a summer beach party at the Rainbow which has proven to be Birmingham’s most successful club night, playing a vast mixture of house and garage. The sounds we heard captivated us and we formed a new alias, changing our style completely. We’re very versatile with the kind of stuff we make. Anything from sampling old swing records to liquid dustup or even more bass driven house. I think it depends on what mood we are in when were in the studio. We like standout artists like Pleasurekraft, Hector Couto, Justin Martin, Skrillex and Nero. There

are so many good producers coming through so as long as it’s well produced, we’re all ears. It’s great that we are capable of reaching out to a worldwide audience. Sonny Fodera of Beatdown Music has always been so supportive of what we do and he makes sure he gets it to the right places at the right time. We hope to continue with a string of solid releases in the near future. Birmingham is great. GLAS puts 100% in to every party from the production to the DJs.
