It’s been a busy first few months here at The Cube, and the signs are that the rest of 2012 is going to be just as exciting. We’ve recently launched our latest release of apartments, with prices starting at just £112,000. To see a taste of the lifestyle on offer, turn to page 6. One of the newest jewels in the crown here at The Cube is the fabulous LaurentPerrier Champagne Bar on the 25th floor. Every bit as jaw-droppingly stylish as its neighbour, Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Bar & Grill, The Champagne Bar has already become one of the city’s coolest hangouts. Take a tour - minus the bubbles, on page 14. Speaking of Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Bar & Grill, the rooftop restaurant officially opened with a launch party that has already set the standard for the rest of the year. Over 500 lucky guests enjoyed drinks and canapés at the ‘Heaven and Hell’ themed party. Our elected charity, Birmingham Children’s Hospital celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. We have lots of exciting events planned for 2012 to help support the charity; learn a little more
about this fantastic institution on page 20. So, you really can do pretty much anything at The Cube, and that now includes having some great portrait shots taken at Adee Phelan Photography. Celebrity hairdresser Adee Phelan has already made a big impression since his arrival at The Cube. He recently made his first television commercial, and we were there to witness it as he filmed in the spectacular location of The Cube. If you’ve not yet experienced the great facilities and wonderful treatments of theclubandspa, then I highly recommend you pay a visit and discover its delights. We hope to see you very soon at The Cube; in the coming months we welcome even more new tenants, including The Law Society and SRA and a great new Brazillian restaurant, Rodizio Rico.

What does it mean to be an ambassador for The Cube?
Have you eaten in Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Bar & Grill?
I spread the word of The Cube and everything that’s here, like Marco’s restaurant and the fantastic spa downstairs; I tweet and chat about it. I genuinely think The Cube is wonderful for Birmingham and I am extremely proud to call myself an ambassador.
Yes, several times. It’s got a different feel to other restaurants in the city because of the sheer size of it. If you want to get a steak in Birmingham, Marco’s is the place to be. It’s really people-friendly and comfortable. It’s like sitting in your lounge. You can relax, have great food, great service – I don’t know what more you would want, really. They’re really flexible and they will cater to your tastes.
What attracted you to The Cube? The approach. It’s an all-encompassing building with the hotel, the restaurant, the spa and everything under one roof. It’s a one-stop luxury place to stay. I think the Champagne Bar is really going to come into its own in the summer; it will certainly be the place to be in Birmingham. Champagne and a nice view – what more could you want? Do you feel a pull to stay in the Midlands? I was born in RAF Cosford and grew up in Wolverhampton. I don’t necessarily feel a pull to stay in the Midlands, but I certainly like to visit regularly. My parents, my brother and some of my friends from school are still here, and obviously Wolves (my football team) are still here. I’m not sure I would ever come back to the Midlands permanently because my husband would never come to ‘the north’ as he calls it - he’s from Holland - but, as long as I’m working here and I’m coming back on regular occasions then I feel like I’ve got the best of both worlds.
Marco’s restaurant has the most spectacular views, and at night it is even more amazing. It’s bringing the contemporary world into Birmingham. We have a lot of great restaurants in the city, and it’s just great to have the addition of Marco’s. Have you visited theclubandspa? Yes, I’ve had the flotation treatment. It was absolutely amazing. You just lie there while they wrap you up and you just drift off. It’s so relaxing. theclubandspa is just so private and the choice of treatments is fantastic. The Champagne Nail Bar is great, too; a glass of Champagne while you get your nails done – what could be better? Who is the most famous person you have ever interviewed? Oh gosh, so many! Ewan McGregor was fun. I got him to do a big thing for BBC Sports Personality. He was brilliant. We had a lot in common with our mutual love of bikes.
“A GLASS OF CHAMPAGNE WHILE YOU GET YOUR NAILS DONE – WHAT COULD BE BETTER?” 0 4
Best career moment? The main highlights of my career would be the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made along the way. I was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of Wolverhampton University – that was a massive accolade for me. There are certain things that stick in your mind more than others; the more important things. About 15 years ago I did a show called Watchdog Health Check where we gave advice and talked about cancers and illnesses. This man wrote to me saying that he had taken our advice and done the check and found cancer. He told me that, because of the check, he had caught it and got rid of it. Things like that certainly stay with you. 0 5
When it comes to gadgets, you often talk about ‘the home of the future.’ I think that our homes have changed a lot. If you think about the kinds of gadgets that you have in your kitchen, for example, it’s a kind of invisible technology. We’re using technology and gadgets without really realising it. It’s important for us to go with the times in order to save as much energy as we can. Everything is so expensive nowadays, so if you can save money and help save the environment, why wouldn’t you want to do that? Favourite gadget? My favourite gadget that I have with me all the time is my iPad. It encompasses everything I need in my life. It has a whole world of apps that help you everyday. The iPad just does it all. • Suzi Perry will be presenting the fashion coverage for Royal Ascot in June.

Richard Branson was hilarious, too. He said he wanted to go to a British Superbike race so he flew us in his helicopter! It just happened to be my birthday, so it was extra special. I was also the first person to interview Valentino Rossi after he won on the Yamaha.

LIFESTYLE CONSTANTINE TZIAMBAZIS, RETAIL MANAGER OF WOMENSWEAR AND PERSONAL SHOPPING AT HARVEY NICHOLS ON HIS SPECTACULAR NEW APARTMENT ON THE CUBE’S SIXTEENTH FLOOR Constantine Tziambazis, by virtue of his role at Harvey Nichols, Birmingham is passionate about style, personality and design. When deciding on a new home, Constantine was immediately drawn to the elegance and sophistication of The Cube. Can you explain a bit about how your career has evolved within Harvey Nichols in The Mailbox? I joined Harvey Nichols seven years ago after finishing my fashion degree. I started as a Sales Advisor, then I moved up to Supervisor and then on to Assistant Department Manager, finally becoming Retail Manager for both Womenswear and Personal Shopping. There’s quite a bit of variation in my job. My day to day duties include managing stock, managing the brands we get in and deciding what, within those brands will suit our customers, managing the team and looking after the VIP clients within Personal Shopping. What attracted you to The Cube as a home? I was still living at home, with my parents, and I was ready to move out.
For me and for the lifestyle I wanted to lead, an apartment was better than a house. The Cube is really convenient for work, for trains and travel and for the fact that it’s got the best bars and restaurants in and around it. What’s it like to own a piece of such an iconic building? I was looking for somewhere stylish to live and it was simply a case of this is what suits me, and, more so, this is what I like. There are lots of apartments around here, so to say it’s just about location isn’t necessarily right. The whole package, the finished product, the views: that’s what sold it to me. Did you appoint an interior designer or did you furnish the apartment yourself? I furnished it all myself. It was a completely blank canvas that I could do anything with. The quality of the finish appealed to me in terms of the granite surfaces in the kitchen, the slate tiling in the bathroom and the quality of the workmanship. The way that the doors have been designed, too, to come out of the walls rather than having 0 6
doors in the way. It’s the little things like that that made the difference to me; the Poggenpohl kitchen, Bosch appliances and the Villeroy & Boch bathroom. It was really about quality over quantity for me. What was the ‘wow’ moment that clinched the deal for you?

From when I first walked in and saw The Cube show apartment, I could just see myself living there. I was looking at the smaller apartments originally – there are studios, one beds and two beds – and I really liked them, but then they showed me a large one bed and I could immediately see myself living there long term. I think, if I had gone for one of the smaller apartments, it would have been for the short term, perhaps just a couple of years, but this one, because of the size, is definitely for the long term. There wasn’t really one thing that clinched it for me; it was the complete package.
M A G A Z I N E C U B E T H E
Have you done much entertaining in your new apartment?
I think we’re getting the buildings right and we have some great places to hang out.
It could be a great apartment for entertaining, if I wasn’t such a control freak! I don’t really like to have many people in my home because I’d always be saying, ‘don’t sit there’, ‘don’t touch that’, ‘watch that drink’!
What are your favourite bars and restaurants? That’s another great thing about Birmingham. Depending on the crowd I’m with, I can go anywhere from Bar Room Bar in The Mailbox to the Champagne Bar in Marco’s to Nando’s! That’s part of the lifestyle that you can have here. You never need to go far to find what you want.
Views are a big part of living at The Cube; what do you look out onto? I face the courtyard so I look into the building but also out through the fretwork screen.
• Prices start from £112,000. Show apartment viewings by appointment only, call 0121 654 9400 or visit www.thecube.co.uk for more information.
What’s your opinion on how Birmingham has evolved in the last 10 years? It has most definitely grown, but there’s still a long way to go.

The Cube is happy to announce that the first Rodizio Rico restaurant outside of London is due to open at The Cube very soon. Take a seat at one of the comfortable tables and listen as your waiter explains the Rodizio Rico system. As usual in restaurants that have a ‘system’, you are greeted by a welcome voice asking if you have been before. Everything will be explained. The authentic Brazilian churrascaria (pronounced ‘shoe-hoss-korea’), which translates as ‘barbecue’ in Portuguese, is the way Rodizio Rico cook their meats, with the word Rodizio meaning ‘rotating’. A circular card will be placed by each diners’ plate with one side being green with
an open set of cutlery and the other being red with a crossed knife and fork. Simply, if you want meat brought to you display the green side, if you have had enough show the red. The passadors (meat carvers) will go from table to table with the different meats, stopping only when you say you’ve had enough. The menu on your table consists of three options: BBQ meats, Vegetarian or Children’s. With the BBQ meats menu, you pay £23.50 to eat as much as you desire from the choice of meats, salads and hot dishes. If you are vegetarian, do not fear as you are catered for, too. For £18 you can eat as much salad, vegetarian dishes and BBQ vegetables as you like. For the little ones, just £12.50 gets children between the ages of five and 12 as much as they can eat. Children under five eat for free. 1 8
The meat at Rodizio Rico is cooked with succulence in mind. All meat is expertly grilled to ensure the flavours and juices are retained to keep the full flavour. If you prefer your meat well done, just let the passador know and they will cut you a piece from the outside. Similarly, if you like your meat on the rare-side, they’ll cut you a slice from the pink centre.
Take a stroll up to the salad bar where you can help yourself to the vast array of hot dishes and exotic salads. Simply flip your card to green and await the never-ending delivery of meat.
If you have any room left, why not try one of the traditional Brazilian desserts? Pudim leite condensado is tasty condensed milk with crème caramel, Quindim is a refreshing coconut pudding and Brigadeirao is a rich chocolate mousse with condensed milk, cocoa and chocolate sprinkles. What better way to round off a hearty meat-filled dinner? There is also a choice of ice creams, mousses and a delicious dessert wine.
The choice of meats on offer is enough to make even the most carnivorous among us weep with joy. With an amazing selection of beef from silverside to picanha and the heart of the rump, pork, chicken, gammon, lamb, sausage and even chicken hearts, all cooked in the unique Rodizio Rico way, they do, indeed, cater to every taste. Try as much or as little as you want and as soon as you’re full or just want a rest, flip your card to red and you will not be disturbed. 1 9
When you’ve eaten all your waistband will allow, admit defeat or bask in your meaty glory and take a breather to enjoy your cocktail.
• The Cube is extremely excited to have Rodizio Rico joining the family. To book a table, call 0121 285 2856 or visit www.rodiziorico.com for more information. Please note Birmingham prices may vary.

THE
REVIEW WITH LUCY KITE SINCE OPENING IN DECEMBER 2011, MARCO PIERRE WHITE STEAKHOUSE, BAR & GRILL HAS ATTRACTED HIGH-PROFILE CLIENTELE INCLUDING REGULAR GUEST LUCY KITE. THE ITV PRESENTER FREQUENTLY DINES AT THE CUBE, SO, WHAT DOES SHE THINK?
There is an extensive wine list offering a wide and varied selection. On this particular evening, I fancied an ‘opulent, sumptuous and deep’ red as described on the menu, so opted for the Etchart Arnaldo B from Valle de Cafayate, Argentina 2006 priced at £34. For the starter I chose the beetroot and goat’s cheese salad with walnut dressing at £6.50. This refreshing salad is a perfect start to any meal with the crumbly goat’s cheese delightfully complimented by the walnut dressing. I can also recommend the smoked salmon with brown bread and butter at £10 for a stylish starter. For the main course I went for the lemon sea bass served with anchovy and caper butter on a bed of crushed new potatoes and spinach. The sea bass was beautifully cooked with perfectly crispy skin and tender meat, just as it should be. I have also tried the 16oz T-bone steak at £28. All of the steaks are aged 2 3
for 28 days so succulence is almost guaranteed. It’s served with grilled beef tomato, onion rings and real chunky chips in beef dripping served in a cute copper pan. For dessert, I was drawn to the banana and toffee mess crème brûlée. I also love the chocolate fondant with pistachios and Wally Ladd sherry trifle. All desserts are £6 and are all exquisite. After dining, I asked the Chef what he would choose from the menu: he said he would always go for the mussel soup to start, the roast rump of lamb for main and finish with crème brûlée for dessert. If the tasty menu appears daunting, you can always trust a chef’s recommendations. Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Bar & Grill offers the ultimate in unique dining in Birmingham. Great service, beautiful décor, amazing views and the best ingredients that deliver simple but exceptional food all go together to make this a fabulous restaurant in a remarkable building.” • To book a table at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Bar & Grill call 0121 634 3433 or visit www.mpwsteakhousebirmingham.co.uk for more information.
