T
he journey to parenthood is not always easy. For some, it is definitely a harder process. But there are many natural steps you can take to boost your fertility, say experts. “From living a healthy lifestyle to addressing hormonal imbalances with herbal supplements, there are many natural ways to promote conception,” says Yuchan Zhong, founder of BioTerra Herbs, a maker of herbal supplements.
Green offers the following tips: • Eat well. Eating well may sound easy, but it can be difficult to maintain, as it takes discipline to eat correctly every day, especially when you have a specific goal in mind, such as conceiving. Get a wide range of nutrient-filled foods, including protein, vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc and iron. Both men and women should focus

• Consider herbal supplements that directly address the causes of any hormonal imbalances that might reduce one’s ability to conceive. For example, those from Bioterra are designed with the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine in mind, which holds that the deficiencies of the body’s main detoxifying organs, the kidneys, liver, and blood, are at the root of female infertility. They promise to increase the overall function of the kidney, spleen and liver, nourishing qi and promoting healthy blood quality and circulation. This (Continued on page 14)

her brain, eyes and central nervous system.
Being pregnant can be an exciting time in your life. It’s a whirlwind of things to do and appointments to keep. Quite often, though, expectant mothers are so worried about taking care of their unborn baby that they neglect to take care of themselves. That’s why many experts agree taking prenatal vitamins is of utmost importance for both mom and baby. “During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes many physical and hormonal changes. She can experience things like fatigue, loss of appetite and an upset stomach, which can make it difficult to maintain the proper levels of essential nutrients needed for a healthy pregnancy,” says Jay M. Goldberg, MD FACOG, a Los Angeles-based obstetrician. Prenatal vitamins, which contain important ingredients such as DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, and folic acid, not only help soon-to-be-moms keep up with nutrients that can be lacking in a diet, but also can help a baby develop his or
It’s important to know that not all vitamins are the same, and now there is another choice. Vertical Pharmaceuticals LLC has created the first and only prenatal vitamin containing egg-based DHA — OB Complete Gold. OB Complete Gold contains OmEGGa DHA, a bioefficient form of DHA found naturally in the brain, eyes and breast milk that comes from cage-free hens. OmEGGa DHA is easily absorbed and digested into the body and is distributed in fewer, simpler steps. OB Complete Gold comes in a small softgel taken once daily and is a comprehensive formula with highly soluble forms of vitamins and minerals. It is sugar-free, lactose-free, and glutenfree. To aid busy moms, the supplement vitamin comes in an on-the-go package that helps them keep track of their daily dosage, offers helpful information on baby’s development during each trimester and provides offers for savings on refills. OB Complete Gold is a prescription prenatal vitamin, so talk to your healthcare provider and try it for free. For more product and safety information, please visit www.obcompletegold.com. Chiropractic Care Eases Pain During Pregnancy For pregnant women, pain relief from lower back pain can be a challenge. This is magnified for those expectant mothers who seek opiate painkillers to relieve pain symptoms during pregnancy. Cases of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) — in which babies are born addicted to opioids because of their mothers’ use of the drugs during pregnancy — have increased fivefold between 2000 and 2012, based on data from mothers and babies in the United States published in the journal, JAMA Pediatrics. That number represents approximately 22,000 infants within the last year, according to the study. In an interview with CBS News, Dr. Terrie Inder of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Mass., says that, “The babies really suffer, just as adults do when they withdraw from narcotics.” Providing alternative methods of pain relief for mothers-to-be will help prevent the birth of opioid-addicted babies. The recent directive from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advising physicians to significantly cut down on the prescribing of opioids as painkillers should encourage more physicians to recommend drug-free pain management strategies, many of which are at least partly covered by insurance plans or are

eligible for reimbursement through flexible spending accounts. Chiropractic care is a safe, drug-free option to help pregnant women manage the spinal and pelvic pain that often accompany pregnancy. A minimum of seven years is required to attain a doctor of chiropractic degree. “All chiropractors are trained to work with women who are pregnant,” and can provide relief by using hands-on adjustments to restore pelvic balance and alignment, according to the American Pregnancy Association. Simplifying Baby Nutrition
Expert advice for your infant's first foods
Your cooing, curious, incredibly cute baby is now 6 months old and you've got the go-ahead from your pediatrician to start solid foods. You both are excited to begin this new adventure, but when you head to the store you are suddenly confused by a sea of options. Which foods are safe for your new little eater? Which offer the most nutrition? How do you know what is the best for your baby? If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone. In research conducted by ORC International and Stonyfield, at least onethird of parents admit to feeding confusion during baby’s first months, and just over half (53 percent) feel overwhelmed by the varying opinions of early childhood nutrition.
Pediatrician Dr. Tanya Altmann, MD, FAAP and mother of three, sees many parents who are unsure about best first foods for infants. To help guide parents and caregivers, she offers five important pieces of advice.
Seek safe dairy options for babies under 12 months. You might think it’s safer to avoid dairy products until infants are at least 12 months old. However, dairy is packed with essential nutrients (such as calcium and vitamin D) for growing bodies, and can be an important part of baby’s diet. The good news is babies as young as 6 months can begin eating yogurt, even if they’re breastfeeding. Not only is it a healthy option for their little bodies, you’ll find infants love yogurt. Choose a brand made with organic whole milk, like

Expose baby to healthy foods early. Introducing baby’s first solids is a stressful time for parents. To keep it simple, reference a list of trusted foundation foods to ensure your baby is receiving the proper nutrients. Remember to check with your pediatrician before feeding your baby any new food groups and modify as needed to accommodate any food allergies. Some great foundation foods are eggs, prunes, avocados, fish, yogurt, cheese, nut butters, chicken, beans, lentils, berries, citrus fruits, green vegetables, whole grains and water. Mix and match these foods as your baby becomes more comfortable with solids.
Protect baby’s gut health. Did you know gut health is the foundation for overall good health? To help protect your baby’s gut health, you want to ensure they’re getting enough probiotics. While naturally found in breast milk, probiotics are also found in yogurt. Stonyfield recently added the probiotic BB-12 (registered trademark of Chr. Hansen) to its YoBaby Yogurt. BB-12(R) has been shown to have a digestive health benefit when consumed regularly as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle by promoting beneficial gut bacteria and regular, soft stools.
Understand natural sugar vs. added sugar. Sugar is receiving a lot of attention in the news recently and many parents are looking more closely at labels when grocery shopping. In doing so, it's important to understand the difference between naturally occurring sugar and added sugar. Wholesome foods like milk, yogurt and fruit have naturally occurring sugars that are part of a healthy diet. Many yogurts come in both plain and flavored varieties, and if you’re looking to control the amount of sweetness, you can purchase unsweetened yogurt to which you can add your own mashed fruits.
Get adventurous with finger foods. Don’t be afraid to put down the spoon and let your little one try feeding themselves with some nutritious finger foods. Not only will baby explore new flavors and textures, but it's an excellent way to practice fine-motor skills. A simple and nutrient-packed first finger food is berries cut into small pieces. The soft berries are easy for babies to pick up and they feel gentle against their gums. Introducing first foods to your baby doesn't have to be a confusing process. By working with your pediatrician and keeping this information close at hand, you'll be ready to expose baby to a whole new world of flavors.

5 Baby Formula Myths
T
he MythBusters on TV's Discovery channel tackled hundreds - if not thousands - of myths in their 19 seasons on the air, but many questions still surround one topic never covered: infant feeding. Baby feeding has many pervasive myths, especially about infant formula. Here are five of those myths debunked by Rallie McAllister, MD, MPH, family physician and co-author of The Mommy MD Guide to Your Baby's First Year:
Myth 1: Breast is best. Fact: It depends on the mother and her baby. Baby formulas are a completely acceptable, doctor-approved and timetested option when feeding baby. Breastfeeding is hard. It seems like it should be natural and easy, but so often
Debunked
it isn't. A recent study conducted by Perrigo Nutritionals found more than half of moms experience issues when it comes to breastfeeding baby with low breast milk supply being the top concern. Additionally, while only 18 percent of new moms expect to introduce infant formula to baby during the first three days of life, in reality 45 percent relied on infant formula during those first days. If you experience breastfeeding challenges, look to formula as an ally - it can be used as a supplement while breastfeeding to provide some relief or used exclusively depending on mom and baby's needs. Also, know that you can find help and support. Consider talking with a friend who has nursed her babies, your pediatrician, a lactation consultant or a local La Leche League.

Myth 2: You have to sterilize your baby's bottles. Fact: You do not need to sterilize your baby's bottles. This is another time saver for you! You should sterilize new bottles and nipples before you use them for the first time. Simply put them in boiling water for five minutes. After that first time, however, you probably don't need to sterilize them again. Instead, you can run bottles and nipples through the dishwasher. Or if you're "old school," wash them in hot, soapy water. Rinse them carefully to remove any soap residue.
Myth 3: Babies prefer warm formula. Fact: Not necessarily. It's perfectly fine to feed your baby formula at room temperature (as long as it's freshly prepared), or even a little cool from the refrigerator. Your baby is most likely to prefer his or her formula at a consistent temperature. In other words, if you start warming it you'll probably have to continue warming it. Here's an easy way to warm your baby's bottle: Set the filled bottle in a container of warm water and let it stand for a few minutes. Check the temperature of the formula on the inside of your wrist before feeding it to your baby. It should feel lukewarm, not hot.
Myth 4: Measuring formula isn't a big deal - just "eyeball it." Fact: The instructions for preparing your baby's formula are important. Follow the directions on the label carefully. If you
put too little water in your baby's formula, it can give baby dehydration or diarrhea. If you put too much water in the formula, you're watering it down and your baby isn't getting enough nutrients. It's critical to measure carefully each and every time.
Myth 5: Brand-name formula is best. Fact: Nationally advertised, brand-name formula and store-brand formula are practically identical but have different effects on your family budget! Did you know all infant formulas sold in the United States must meet the same FDA standards and offer complete nutrition for baby? That means store-brand formula is nutritionally comparable to nationally advertised brands. In fact, store-brand formula is clinically proven to support baby's growth and development and proven to be just as well tolerated by your baby as those other brands. So, what's the main difference? Storebrand formulas cost less because they don't spend millions of dollars on marketing. Think about all the ads you see on TV and all the samples that get handed out in doctors' offices. In the case of those big brands, those marketing costs are passed on to you in the form of a higher price tag on each container of formula.
Once you get into the groove of feeding your baby, it will all feel like second nature. And then it will almost be time to give up the bottle!

e l t t o B s v Breast
It's a debate that has been waged since the introduction of manufactured milk for babies. Are our little ones better off being given a concentrated formula of nutrients, vitamins and minerals, or the more natural product of our own bodies? Of course, the answer varies, and the truth very much depends on what you put inside yourself - a healthy, well-
such as anticonvulsants, can be passed on through breast milk, putting your baby at risk even if you eat well and avoid non-prescribed toxins. In rare cases (around 2%, according to NHS figures), it's also possible for a mother to be unable to produce enough milk to feed her baby effectively, another factor that can result in the decision to bottle feed.
“…some women feel a certain stigma when it comes to breast feeding…” balanced diet should provide all the goodness a newborn needs. Nevertheless, this is a deeply personal choice that has many factors, all of which must be taken into account in order to make an informed decision.

With so many stories in the newspapers, there's no denying that some women feel a certain stigma when it comes to breast feeding, and other lifestyle factors such as employment can also play a part in making it more difficult to breast feed. Despite the awkwardness or embarrassment that can be (unfairly) felt, though, it's worth noting that doctors (Continued on page 14)

In contrast, it has to be said that there are far more disadvantages when it comes to bottle feeding. These range from health concerns such as the potential for weaker immune systems and greater risk of childhood obesity, to more practical aspects such as the sterilization of equipment and the danger of milk being served too strong, too weak or too hot. However this isn't to say that, as a necessary replacement, formula doesn't serve a real purpose and help many parents ensure their little ones receive the best possible start in life.

Public Breastfeeding: Moms Weigh-in Attitudes and opinions can vary greatly when it comes to public breastfeeding. Yet, when it comes to the opinion that matters most — the mother’s — a recent survey suggests that “breast is best.” Highlighting breastfeeding attitudes and behaviors of moms and expecting moms around the U.S., the 2014 Lansinoh Global Breastfeeding Survey found that more than half of women surveyed say that breastfeeding in public is perfectly natural (57 percent). Other key findings included: ● Ninety-three percent of moms believe that “breast is best” when it comes to feeding babies. That number increases to 98 percent for moms who are pregnant with their first baby. ● “Mommy Guilt” is real. In fact, 64 percent of moms say they would feel guilty if they did not breastfeed. ● The majority of moms (86 percent) who choose to breastfeed do so because of the health benefits for baby. Forming a close bond with baby (5 percent) and to save money by not buying formula (5 percent) were distant second-place reasons. “These data show that moms today have the best interest of their baby’s health in mind when forming their breastfeeding goals and opinions,” said Gina Cicatelli Ciagne, CLC and Vice President of
Healthcare & Media Relations, Lansinoh Laboratories. “Yet, ultimately, there are many other factors moms navigate when making their decision.” One such factor is whether to use breast pumps. According to the survey, more than three-fourths of moms have used — or plan to use — breast pumps. That number is highest with expecting moms, with 82 percent saying they plan to use pumps, and the remaining 18 percent unsure whether they will or not. It’s important to note that the survey was very careful in choosing its participants. “We wanted to talk to moms who are currently breastfeeding, as well as those who recently stopped, because understanding how they feel is the best way to support today’s breastfeeding moms, whether it’s through new breastfeeding products or with workplace policies and government support,” said Ciagne. Soothing Tips for Fussy Babies
P
arents dealing with a fussy baby -- especially one that has been recently fed, changed and loved -are eager to find ways to soothe them. Fortunately, child sleep expert, Kim West, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, better known as The Sleep Lady, has helped thousands of families gently soothe their fussy little ones and find sleep for more than 20 years. To help keep your baby happy and calm, Graco hired West to offer the following soothing tips:
Learn Baby’s Sleepy Cues Most babies up to six months old can only be awake for about one to two hours before becoming overtired. Part of the learning curve is being able to recognize a child’s typical sleepy cues, so that you can move them to a safe sleep space as soon as possible. These signs may include yawning, staring, fussiness, quieting down, losing interest in playtime, eye rubbing, and hand sucking. An alert or spirited child may move very quickly from happy to tired to overtired, so keeping one eye on the clock is also

important. Be prepared to move straight to naptime or bedtime as soon as you see your child’s sleepy cues.
Recognize Baby’s Sleep Patterns When your baby is about three or four months old, you may start to see a glimmer of a schedule forming where sleeping and waking are concerned. This is because your baby’s internal clock -the circadian rhythm -- is starting to develop. Look for this pattern, along with your baby’s sleep cues, and create a soothing naptime and bedtime routine, which can include white noise, feeding and rocking. Nap timing and length are often the last components of a baby’s schedule to develop, so you might need to use more effort and additional soothing techniques

in the afternoon when getting a little one to sleep can be particularly challenging.
Use Motion to Calm Motion is a favorite of babies for soothing because it likely reminds them of the sensations and security of their mother’s womb. Movement will often do what no other kind of soothing can do, so it’s a good technique to try.
also try dimming the lights, turning on white noise, placing your baby in a swing or offering them a pacifier.
Being prepared to tailor your soothing strategies to your child’s individual needs can help provide both you and your baby more relaxing days and nights.

Rock your baby in your arms when you can, but if you need a break to get things done around the house or during times of extended fussiness, consider using a swing. Since every baby is unique, try a swing that has multiple motion options, such as the Graco EveryWay Soother with Removable Rocker. With 16 soothing motions, six different speeds, two vibration settings and 15 songs and sounds, parents can create a personalized soothing environment to calm their little one. As an added benefit, the swing’s seat conveniently doubles as a removable rocker to keep baby happy and close by anywhere in the house. This swing is now exclusively available at Babies “R” Us.

Parents Keep a Watchful Eye on Baby Safety
If there’s one thing that new or expecting parents can take comfort in, it’s this: Your greatest fears are shared by others just like you. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Your baby falling or choking. All topped the list of parents’ safety concerns cited in a new survey conducted by the research firm Toluna, Inc. “Parents today know that keeping kids safe involves round-the-clock diligence,” says Stacy DeBroff, founder and CEO of Mom Central (www.momcentral.com), an online resource that provides Moms with household and parenting solutions. In fact, according to the findings — and don’t be surprised if you recognize yourself here — a whopping 71 percent of respondents labeled themselves as one of the following: “Protective.” Parents who’ll “stop at nothing to ensure the safety and wellbeing” of their offspring. Child-proofing is as second-nature to them as investing is to Warren Buffett. “Close Supervisors.” While not as relentless as the aforementioned category, these parents admit they “hover” and take regular precautions. No surprise, then, that the same survey ranked baby monitors as the top nonclothing item on parents’ must-buy lists
— beating out everything from strollers to childproofing locks to toys. Baby monitors can buy you peace of mind by transmitting sound and — in the case of video models — images for those times when you must step away from the crib. But be forewarned: There are all sorts of models out there, and experts say the biggest challenge is finding one that works with minimal interference from other nearby electronic products. One way to skirt that problem is to look for that rare monitor that uses Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology, or DECT, like VTech’s new Safe&Sound Digital Audio Monitor DM221 (www.babymonitors.vtech.com). If you want to see as well as hear what’s going on up to 1,000 feet away from your child, there’s the equally new VTech Safe&Sound Full-Color Video and Audio Monitor VM321. In addition to its high-resolution, 2.8inch color LCD screen and full-motion video, the device includes advanced features like split-screen and infrared night-vision capabilities, a talk-back intercom system and five different playable lullabies. Now you just have to decide who needs the lullabies more — you or your baby.

Nursery Safety Is your family expanding? Protect what matters most with these nursery safety checks
You may have chosen the perfect color palette and all of your nursery furniture, but have you thought about some key safety checks? "The arrival of a baby means you have to take a look at your home in a whole new light," said Tarsila Wey, marketing director for First Alert, the most trusted brand in home safety. "Take the time now to help ensure your home is safe and secure."
Check your smoke alarms Smoke alarms help protect your family, but in order to do so the alarms need to be present - and working. Install a working smoke alarm in the nursery and ensure that the rest of the home is properly equipped. The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms inside every bedroom,
September is Baby Safety Awareness Month!
First Alert has outlined some crucial tasks to accomplish before the little one makes his or her appearance:
Maintain crib safety According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two-thirds of children's deaths under the age of one are caused by suffocation. Make sure that, when prepping the nursery, the crib meets safety standards, and avoid loose bedding or soft toys in the crib. After the baby arrives, the infant should sleep alone and be placed on his or her back on a firm surface.
outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Residential smoke alarms need to be replaced at least every 10 years. To find out whether it's time to replace the smoke alarms in your home, simply look on the back of the alarms where the date of manufacture is marked. The smoke alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date (not the date of purchase or installation).
Protect from the "Silent Killer" Often dubbed "the silent killer," carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless and

odorless gas that is impossible to detect without an alarm. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, CO poisoning is the leading cause of accidental poisoning in the United States and is responsible for an average of 450 deaths each year. Standard CO alarms are designed to alert people to high levels of CO (30-70 parts per million), which can be fatal. However, lower levels of CO have also been proven to be harmful to infants. Fully protect your newborn from both high and low levels of CO with the Onelink by First Alert Environment Monitor, which provides protection for those most vulnerable to CO levels as low as 9 parts per million, and peace of mind for parents. Compatible with Apple HomeKit and Alexa Skills, it also monitors temperature and humidity, and notifies users of changing conditions.
Update the escape plan It is important to plan and practice an escape plan for your home in the event of a fire. According to an NFPA survey, only one of every three American households has actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. This is even more important with the addition of a new member to your family. As a family, walk through the home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Identify two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. For the second story, place escape ladders near windows, and practice setting it up so you'll be able to use it correctly and quickly in an emergency. Make sure everyone understands the plan, with special attention to carrying the newborn.
Choose an outside meeting place that is a safe distance from your home, and make sure to practice your escape plan twice a year - and before the baby comes. Create an emergency call list Even though everything we need is on our smartphones these days, when a babysitter or nanny is with your infant, they might not be as prepared in case of an emergency - and you might not be either! Having an emergency contact list readily available can potentially save time and make everything go a little more smoothly when there is a crisis. Make sure the list includes family numbers, poison control, non-emergency numbers for police and fire departments, and neighbors' phone numbers.

In the last 10 years, scientists have learned that having enough beneficial gut bacteria is a critical component of overall health. Now, research shows that ensuring newborns have sufficient exposure to probiotic bacteria during infancy and early childhood can give them a head start on lifelong wellness. What makes bacteria so important? Well, with nearly 80 percent of the immune system residing in the gut, a healthy microbial makeup from birth is essential for proper immune system development and optimal digestive, metabolic, and brain function.
When looking to encourage a healthy infant microbiome (AKA the array of bacteria and microorganisms in the body), science tells us that the mother’s gut health is key. Here’s how it works: during pregnancy, babies are exposed to their mother’s bacteria in the placenta, which harbors a variety of microbes. A baby’s immune system begins to develop just after birth, during which a mother passes on her beneficial bacteria to her child (often termed “seeding the microbiome”)

as he or she passes through the vaginal canal and partakes in breast milk and skin-to-skin contact. Then, through an interactive connection between host cells and the baby’s brand new gut microbiome (inherited directly from the mother), helpful microorganisms selectively colonize the gut and participate in the maintenance and promotion of the child’s immune system. Expecting and nursing mothers can be proactive by ensuring their gut health is in tip-top condition, since the microbes they pass on to their infant can help establish a solid foundation for lifelong health.
In addition to directly replenishing their good bacteria, moms should do their best to stay well-rested and properly hydrated while paying close attention to their diet. Focusing on getting proper prenatal nutrition in the form of whole and plant-based foods, especially those rich in prebiotic fiber is important. It’s

also helpful to be mindful of factors that deplete good bacteria, like antimicrobials, stress, environmental toxins and exposure to unnecessary antibiotics.

Many doctors, midwives and other experts are touting the health benefits of one supplement for expecting and new mothers believed to increase a child’s chances for a healthy start at life: probiotics.
Exercise: There is overwhelming evidence that indicates physical exercise helps to lessen the effects of depression. This is due to the release of endorphins, or "feel-good" hormones, in the brain.
“As a mom, the best gift you can give your baby is a healthy microbiome,” says Jamie Morea, co-founder of Hyperbiotics, a company that specializes in probiotic supplements and has developed the first probiotic formula designed specifically for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Hyperbiotics PRO-Moms includes time-release delivery for enhanced effectiveness, ensuring the living organisms survive stomach acids to colonize within the gut.
Not only can probiotics help with digestive discomfort during pregnancy, but an effective supplement can repopulate a mother’s system and help ensure she is passing on the best and most beneficial bacteria to her children. Because gut and microbial health have an overwhelming impact on lifelong wellness, tending to it while expecting is one of the most important things to consider for mothers-to-be in order to properly pave the path of health for little ones.

Try these ideas, from Humana’s Dr. Lawrence Weinstein, Chief Medical Officer for Humana Behavioral Health, to enhance your own mental health:
Eat a Healthy Diet: A diet high in sugar consumption is strongly correlated with mental health problems. Eating whole foods and limiting intake of processed foods are important habits to maintain. Go Outside: Get enough exposure to sunlight to maintain healthy vitamin D levels. Low levels of vitamin D are associated with psychiatric and neurological disorders. Eliminate Bad Habits: Both smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol can cause increased levels of stress and tension. Over time, this can lead to mental illnesses, such as depression. Get Help When Needed: Getting help from a friend, family member, or professional is highly likely to improve behavioral health. Actively seeking guidance can lead to a quicker recovery from mental illnesses and mental disorders. And this will ultimately allow you to live a healthier, fuller life.
