2011 Christmas Party...

www.pickupslimited.com January - February 2012

by Chris Travers

Clearman’s North Woods Inn in La Mirada has become our traditional holiday party spot. With plenty of everything, it is truly a place to celebrate friendship and the holidays. Special thanks go out to Bill and Andrea Crisel for heading things up, Gloria Beverley for being the Vana White of the evening and assisting our leader Steve Stillwell in passing out the gifts and all of the others that lended a helping hand in creating a great party. Of special note was the presentation to Dave and Jean Britton of their 35 year club plaque and Mike Hay previewed 4 media frames showing some of his hard work with the club archives scanning project.

President’s Page... Life is a Gas!

But are we getting the most out of every tank we purchase?

By Steve Stillwell

California fuel prices are about $.40 higher than last year, which was more expensive than the year before. The trend is obvious and gas prices that we all remember from years gone by will never return. Fuel companies have just gotten too greedy to give Americans a break. We have to purchase gasoline, so there is no dodging this necessity, especially for us truck lovers. But what can you do? To follow are some great tips for saving fuel and money at the same time. At the top of the list is to eliminate those jack-rabbit starts. We love the roar of our engines and even a tire chirp, but quick starts consume large amounts of fuel and greatly reduce fuel mileage. Keep you truck’s engine tuned. Spark plugs and ignition wires are a cheap investment and a proven method to increasing fuel mileage. Burning fuel efficiently will generate more miles per gallon. Don’t use the air conditioning needlessly. A/C compressors draw horsepower and the driver will have to press on the pedal harder with the air conditioning operating. Roll the windows down on temperate days. Inflate your tires to the maximum allowable pressure. Roll resistance will decrease your fuel mileage. I doubt that too many truckers will drop their love for fat tires, but they do eat more gas. Use premium engine oil. Synthetics actually do decrease friction and thus provide you with the biggest bang for the gasoline buck. Synthetics are also available as gear lubes for rear ends and transmissions, but Currie Enterprises does not recommend them to customers. Reduce the weight in your truck. After the truck show, remove all of the extra weight of EZ Ups, chairs, ice chests, unnecessary tools, floor jacks, etc. The additional weight burns gas. Also, plan your trips and don’t fill the tank to the top if you don’t have too. Gas weighs about 6-plus lbs. per gallon. Think ahead when traveling, such as getting a roll at an approaching hill, thus eliminating the need to press hard on the accelerator when climbing a hill. Professional truckers have this down to a science. Starting and stopping creates gas guzzlers. If you are going to be stopped for an excessive amount of time, turn off your engine. It will save you money in the long run. For less than the price of a tank of fuel, you can have a professional tune your truck, more precisely adjust your carburetor. After following a few hot rods at the most recent Cruisin’ for a Cure, I thought I was going to pass out from the fumes generated by very rich, carbureted engines. I was going to add a piece on proper carb tuning, but found it would take pages to pull this off. Best to go see Glenn. Let’s bring our truck engines up to maximum performance when it comes to fuel consumption.

Another Year Gone!... by Ed Oe Time flies when your having fun, doesn’t it? Besides all the preparation for Christmas there were many shows attended starting right after Thanksgiving. Nov 26, took me to the Bo Huff “Thank you tour”. This show had everyone who digs the kustom culture, rockabilly style. Bo was treated for the big “C” in 2010 and these shows help ease the pain of the expenses. My truck fitted right in since my rear fenders are still primer from the 3” widening job. I had a chance to see and met some of the legends from Bo to Gene Winfield. There were some awesome rides there with many vendors and live music made for a very nice day. Entering December led some of us to the 14th annual John Force Holiday Show. If you never been, this is a show that will get you into the holiday mood. When you see the mountain of toys donated for the Chips 4 kids program you can’t help but feel good. Craig Hoelzel does an excellent job rallying the clubs and organizing this show each year. PUL has a nice spot where you can see not just our club trucks but many of the local Ford trucks from all around. And before the last of the lights go up on the house the Mooneyes Christmas Show and drags was a must do. Much like the Bo Huff show this had all the local car clubs styling and showing off their stuff. Since I grew up in the Irwindale, Baldwin Park area there were many clubs and old friends to visit with. The weather was nice and the drag strip was cooking. The sounds of the cars took me back to Sunday afternoons in the 70’s when Irwindale was a busy place each weekend. And the other place to spend time was the 605 Speedway for the place to watch figure eight racing. There were also tons of vendors and I even got a autographed picture from the leadslinger, Bill Hines. He was selling his used cigars and pictures out of one of his creations. Now it was time to get the last of the LED lights up on the house and pull out the fake tree. With all the elements in place and Holiday shows behind me it’s time to focus on the season of giving. With the list of toys from the grandkids I headed out to the mall in style, sporting my latest show shirt and memories of shows past. With some help from Christmas cheer I will be thinking of what the new year will bring and another year of shows and fun with my friends. It’s Time for New Chapter Clothing At our December club meeting, Glenn Kerr presented information about embroidered club clothing. First of all, we do have a local vendor, Embroidme in Costa Mesa. Embroidme is a nation wide company with full-service showrooms that combine a wide variety of apparel and promotional items. You might be able to find a location that is more convenient to where you live, but there will always be less confusion if we can deal with the same store which for now will be the Costa Mesa store. The important thing to keep in mind is that this logo and artwork is the property of the Orange County Chapter and is not to be used by anybody else without written permission of our chapter. It is not to be used by any other chapter. With that being said, you are able to custom order colors to match with your truck or just to compliment the shirt or jacket you like. The “Official” color that we use for everything is PMS Warm Red like you see in the first logo to the right. The other logos give you an idea of what can be done. Our current standard club jacket is a Harrington style M770 which is no longer available. The shop is currently looking for something that is similar in style. You can also order shirts or jackets in a number of other styles and colors, so you might want to check out what the shop can offer to you. A price has been set for front and back side embroidery but those costs will be a bit lower if a quantity of 8 or more garments is produced at the same time. Add to this the price of your chosen garment and you are done! Some of the guys like the Dickies shirts which is great, but be careful on what you buy. There are genuine Dickies products and there are lots of knock-offs out there so be sure to try on whatever you buy first to be sure that you are happy with it. A password for Orange County Chapter members only will be set up with the operator of the Costa Mesa location Debbie Petty. This is done to ensure the security of our artwork. More information including your password will be available at the January meeting. A special thanks to Glenn Kerr for doing the leg work on this for us.

NHRA DRAG RACING... the pitts are yet another reason to ditch work The 2011 NHRA Drag Racing season closed where it started, in Pomona. We are truly blessed with this and the Winter Nationals events so close to home. After all Drag Racing is really the roots of street rodding and there are tons of great vendors and ideas to see at every NHRA event. This year marked the 50th anniversary of the NHRA so the organization celebrated by naming it’s 50 top drivers of all time. #1 was “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, but #2 was out local favorite and big Pickups Limited supporter John Force. The display of vehicles from Force’s past was unbelievable and truly overshadowed most of the event as many of the championship categories had already been decided. Also on display in the pits was a rather understated Police vehicle and Big Rig tractor along with several technical displays like the Lucas Oil demo of what happens when your motor looses proper lubrication. NHRA Racing, where every ticket is a pit pass. Hauln’ Freight • January - February 2012

EDITOR’S NOTES... Do You Need help printing the newsletter? by Chris Travers

With the explosion of technology that we have experienced over the last 10 years or so, it has become possible to create fantastic and involved publications like our own Chapter newsletter. The sophistication of the programs that are available to the average person is only limited by the time and effort that we are willing to put into our finished product. Take a bunch of pictures from the previous two months of being a car freak, add a few words and there you have it... sometimes 40 pages of stuff that we all love to look at. The problem for some of comes when we want to print a copy to share with a pal or to carry into your “private library” each morning at that special time. Here a few simple tips that should work on most any PC you may have access to. You Apple guys should have a much easier time of this, but that’s what you pay the big bucks for: #1 - In the Bill Gates created world of Windows, there are several different methods of performing the same task! I really don’t know why this is because it can lead to lots of confusion and does on a regular basis. I am self taught so hopefully this explanation doesn’t confuse anybody. #2 - All of our publications are saved for you in a PDF format which greatly reduces the size of the file. PDFstands for Portable Document Format. This file format, created by Adobe Systems in 1993, is used for representing documents in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout flat document, including the text, fonts, graphics, and other information needed to display it. If you cannot read our newsletter, it probably means that you do not have PDF Reader installed on your system. Downloads are available for free on the internet so get it if you don’t have it. #3 - Once you are able to read the file on your screen, go to your print command and you will see a menu like the one in the example to the left. Make sure that you click to print all pages then click on to the “PROPERTIES” box for your next step. 10 www.pickupslimited.com 11 www.pickupslimited.com

Hauln’ Freight • January - February 2012

#4 - Once you have opened the “PROPERTIES” box, you should see a menu that looks like the one here to our right. Choose the tab marked Printing Shortcuts so that we can change a few settings. REMEMBER, YOUR PRINTER MANUFACTURER IS NOT YOUR FRIEND! ALL THEY REALLY WANT TO DO IS SELL YOU INK AND LOTS OF IT. Your screen will probably indicate that your print quality is set for “NORMAL” In most cases this uses about 60% more ink than our next setting. Unless you are printing photographs on photo paper, it’s a big waste of time and money as the higher the print quality setting, the longer the print job takes and of course, drains ink from your cartridge and money from your wallet.

#5 - OK so now that I have beat up on HP, Kodak, Epson and the others, click on to the down arrow under the “PRINT QUALITY” section and choose “FAST DRAFT” This does exactly what it says... it will print extremely fast and in draft quality mode, will use much less ink. One try at this setting and I think you will see that under normal circumstances, the quality is quite readable and acceptable. If your printer supports double sided printing, now is the time to indicate “TWO SIDED PRINTING”. Click “OK” and this window will close, taking you back to the main “PRINT” menu. Follow whatever prompts that may come up for your particular printer during the print job to flip the paper if you are printing on both sides of the paper.

#6 - Back at the “PRINT MENU”, double check that you are still set to print “ALL PAGES” and that your scaling is set to “FIT TO PRINTABLE AREA”. Click “OK” and the printing will begin. If your printer has a paper stop, be sure that it is in the up position. If your printer is like mine and you don’t do this, paper will go flying throughout the room like the Jane Fonda copy machine scene in 9 to 5! Again if you are printing on both sides of the paper, you will receive a prompt that will instruct you on when and how to flip or turn your paper. That’s abut all there is to it. Follow these simple instructions and you will be able to print a newsletter or anything else at MACH 1 speed and save some money on ink and paper to boot! Hauln’ Freight • January - February 2012

Give Me A Brake... By Glenn Kerr

I Do This For A Living

Who’s The Expert Here, Anyway Have you ever noticed sometimes things people say tend to stay with you for a long time? Years ago while on a fishing trip, the Captain made one of those statements. It’s been stuck in my mind ever since. We were on a school of tuna. The Captain told us to use a rubber core sinker about 24” above the hook. Almost nobody was doing as he suggested. Guys, for the most part were having a hard time getting bit. Out of frustration the Captain stopped the chum line, allowed us to drift off the school and then called everybody in to the galley. This is never a good sign. The first words out of his mouth were “I do this for a living”. Then he proceeded to scold us for not listening to him when he was trying to help us catch fish. Sure enough, we got back on that school, did as he instructed with a rubber core sinker. Well what do you know. We started to catch fish. Similar things happen at our shop. A customer will call about a problem with his car. Then proceed to tell me his neighbor who works on cars on the side told him the muffler bearing needed replacing. His neighbor is an expert in auto repair because, even thought he’s fast food restaurant manager, he used to live next to John Force’s twice removed cousin who worked for Force 20 years ago as a shop clean up person. So he knows what he’s talking about. It never ceases to amaze me every one is an expert, except the guy who does it for a living.

Things We Get Asked The Most (and the answers) People ask a lot of questions about their cars. These are some of the ones we hear most often. My car vibrates when driving. Will an alignment help the vibrations? Most likely not. Although misalignment under some circumstances can cause vibrations, the most likely cause is a tire or wheel balance problem. 12 www.pickupslimited.com 13

Hauln’ Freight • January - February 2012

My car pulls to one side when I’m driving on the highway. What causes this? The three main causes of pulling when driving are, in order: uneven tire wear, misalignment or power steering problems. The cause usually is some combination of these conditions. How often should my vehicle be aligned? Most vehicles should have their alignment checked at least once a year of normal driving. The alignment should also be checked when tires are replaced, if a curb, pothole or other object is hit hard. What is an Alignment? When we align you car we are adjusting the wheels to go down the road together, in a straight line. This prevents unusual tire wear. It also gives a better handling and safer vehicle. My car vibrates when I brake. Do I need an alignment? Most vibrations on braking are brake related. My brakes squeak. Do I need a brake job? Possibly. Some squeaks or noises are common with disc brakes. Many disc brakes have audible sensors that also cause a squeaking or high pitched squeal sound. Brakes are one of the most important systems on your car. Any noises should be inspected to see if there is a problem or they are normal brake noises. How often should my brakes be inspected? When you car is new, the brakes should go thousands of miles without service. We suggest inspecting brakes at every lube service. You may not need brake service that often, but it’s better to check them too early and not need anything, than wait too long and cause needless damage or expense. As always, if you have any questions, please free to call me. And as always, if I don’t know the answer or can’t find one, I’ll make one up that sounds plausible. Glenn Kerr 949 631-2888

14th ANNUAL JFR HOLIDAY CAR SHOW ... The Biggest Ever - JFR PRESS RELEASE

YORBA LINDA, CA (December 5, 2011) --- A day after the 14th annual John Force Racing Holiday Car Show the staff at the West Coast JFR HQ is still recovering from what many long-time employees consider the biggest and most well attended holiday car show ever. Fans began arriving at the home of the 17-time championship NHRA Funny Car headquarters and museum at 7:30 a.m. even though the event wasn’t scheduled to open to the public until 10 a.m. and crowds mingled long after the 4 p.m. closing time. Crowd estimates by local media exceeded 25,000 and the number of toys donated is expected to come close to 10,000 items for the California Highway Patrol “CHiPS For Kids” Toy Drive. “We had a great weather and thousands of people turned out to support kids in need throughout Orange County and Southern California. It was an awesome, awesome day,” said Craig Hoelzel, Special Events Director for John Force Racing. “I can’t thank the car club guys enough for bringing out their cars and trucks plus I have to thank all the Brea/Yorba Linda police and California Highway Patrol officers who helped us with traffic and crowd management. I don’t think I have ever seen a bigger pile of toys in all my years of being a part of the Holiday Car Show.” This year’s Holiday Car Show featured two Batmobiles, numerous land speed racers, a 2006 Bugatti Veyron valued at almost $2 million and nearly 1,000 cars and trucks from area collectors and hobbyists. The featured cars of the show were Pontiacs and Hoelzel thought the car owners really did a great job of representing that era of classic hot rods well. In the middle of the event the autograph session was the main highlight and all the JFR drivers including 15-time Funny Car champion John Force along with Robert Hight, Mike Neff, Ashley Force Hood, Brittany Force and Courtney Force signed for over two hours alongside NHRA Funny Car racer Jack Beckman, NHRA Legends Tom “Mongoose” McEwen and Linda Vaughn; plus George Barris- The King of Customizers and Genevieve Chappell – the Queen of Cars.

2011 MOONEYES XMAS SHOW & DRAGS

You want different? You want special? You want overload? That was exactly what the annual MOONEYES Xmas Show & Drags at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale provided. DIFFERENT? You bet it was. Over 1,200 vehicles of all types... some of them even ran! A few didn’t do too well on the drag strip though. SPECIAL? How about a full Lunar eclipse on the early morning of the show sponsored by Moon Equipment! You can’t buy advertising like that. OVERLOAD? Besides the huge crowd of cars, trucks, motorcycles, and vendors, icons of the industry like Gene Winfield, George Barris, and Bill Hines who at almost 90 years old is still slinging lead and teaching others his techniques. I was able to talk to all of them which was a real treat for me. Since we are a truck club, I thought I would see just how many different “flavours” of trucks I could fine. I didn’t see everything but it was sure fun trying!

We left the Ayers Suites in Yorba Linda with a smaller group that expected due to some wet weather which didn’t stop Jim & Dusty from bringing their F-100’s. Way to go guys! This museum is truly memorable. You can spend days going over the airplanes and the supporting displays of memorabilia. It is truly a special place bringing memories and fantasies to all of us young and old. Jim Dorsey and Mike Hay offered quite a few insights of their own based on their past. Rather than going on and on about the museum, let’s just say that you all need to go and see for yourselves. This brings us to the mid point in our adventure with Rich taking us farming. After a few calls were made, he led us through the valley to a farm that he has worked with over the years. We drove through the feed lot (I’m not sure what it was that Jim had on his running boards) and had a great time picking veggies for the dinner table. We finished out the day at The Hat for a balanced meal WITHOUT VEGGIES or any of that other health food stuff.

Bigfoot Speaks...

by Rudy Weber

We were away from the office on Tuesday November 1. What a day Randy planned. She really out did herself. At the last minute, she called the club members she thought would be available for a weekday run to Oak Glen for great apples and pies. Attending were Rich and Randy, Rudy and Edith, Dan and Cathy and Bill who took the day off and came alone as Andra had to take care of a close friend. Chris also was not able to go but knew about those special Oak Glen 5lb apple pies and put his order in for one. What a great day. We meet at Tom’s Place in Anaheim for breakfast then drove to Beaumont, turned left and went up the hill to Oak Glen. Our first stop was Rileys at Los Rios Rancho. We sampled everthing they would let us Apples Sider, Apple Preserves and a lot of just very good tasting Apples. We all purched lots of great apples. Lunch was at Apple Annies restaurant just up the hill. The food was great and the wild life out the windows was something to look at too. Squirrels and Peacocks were everywhere. Oak Glen Curio shops were very popular with our troops, Randy and Rich, Bill and Dan all got new hats... (50%) off was enough to swing the deal. At the same time Edith and I went shopping for a special request by Chris for one of Oak Glens 5# high dome apple pies and one for ourselves. The next stop was Mom’s Country Orchards for a rest stop and a lot of good old time pictures. Bill even got Edith to sample some house wines! We returned home through Yucaipa and Redlands. I drove 160 miles round trip WITH MY F-100. What a great day with good friends. Big Foot Rudy Weber - rudolphweber@yahoo.com PS. Randy, what a great run you put together, let’s do another real soon. San Diego Chapter Report... Thanksgiving Day Meals on Wheels Hi Everybody, I wanted to share the attached picture that Keith Martin posted on Facebook. I reposted it on my Facebook page with the following comment. Thanks to my fellow SDPUL trucker Keith Martin for posting this picture. This picture shows our 1953-1956 Ford Pick-Ups lined up in the parking lot of the La Mesa American Legion Post as we get ready to deliver Meals on Wheels to east San Diego County Senior Citizens. We have been doing this every Thanksgiving Day for about 10 years. Yeah... That’s me with my SD Chargers Cami Hat walking toward my truck on the end. As I was doing my work for th eupcoming Jeff’s Fun Run, I received a message from Renee who along with her husband has been a participant in the past. She was sending her regrets that they would not be able to attend the 2012 event because of a bad accident her husband was in. Here is the story from the Press Telegram

LONG BEACH -- A 23-year-old Lakewood man was killed Monday after he lost control of his car while speeding down a local street, police said. The victim was driving east on Willow Street at about 11:55 a.m. when he struck the median at Clark Avenue, launching his black 2005 Dodge Neon airborne, said Lisa Massacani, a Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman. As the car came back down it struck three other vehicles, Massacani said. Two of those drivers -- a 54-year-old man driving a Ford Ranger and a 64-year-old man driving a Chevy El Camino -- suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to local hospitals. The third motorist hit by the Dodge -- a 50-year-old man driving a Chevy Tahoe -- was unhurt and drove himself home, the spokeswoman said. Long Beach Fire Department crews were on scene within less than two minutes of the 911 calls and had to use the Jaws of Life to free the 23-year-old from the crumpled wreckage of his Dodge, said Firefighter Steve Yamamoto. It took less than 10 minutes for firefighters to free him, Yamamoto said. The Lakewood resident, however, could not be saved, authorities said. His name was withheld pending notification of his family, police said. Massacani said investigators were still working late Monday to determine what caused the 23-year-old to lose control of his car. “He was driving at excessive speed,” Massacani said, noting the driver was not wearing his seat belt. As police and fire department crews picked through the debris at the crash site Monday afternoon, traffic backed up for several blocks around the intersection. RENEE’S HUSBAND SUFFERED MUCH MORE THAN THE MINOR INJURIES STATED IN THE NEWSPAPER ARTICLE AND EXPECTS TO BE OFF WORK FOR AT LEAST 6 MONTHS... BE CAREFUL OUT THERE AND BE READY FOR ANYTHING THAT COMES YOUR WAY! Hauln’ Freight • January - February 2012
