annual christmas party... by chris travers The first Thursday in December arrived and the O.C. gang wasted no time getting to the Northwoods Inn in La Mirada for our annual Christmas Party & Dinner. Once again we had a private room with great service thanks to the arrangements that Bill Crisel made ahead of time. Besides the decorations provided by the North Woods, Bill and his little Elves including Gloria, Donna, Ron, and Andrea provided center pieces and other goodies for everybody. After a huge dinner, the gift exchange started with Gloria and Bill calling out numbers and with Dale’s enlistment, handed out the gifts to keep things going. It is always great to see everybody with their wives and friends at this Chapter sponsored event. photos continued on page 4

President’s Page... By Steve Stillwell Billet Shocks for Mustang II IFS kits

First of all happy New Year to all and my best wishes to you for a very happy and fruitful 2013. May you, your spouse and family members have a wonderful new year! Now for some truck business. I work at a candy store when it comes to suspension innovations for classic truck owners. I get excited when I see a completed Model A chassis rolling out of the chassis shop and wonder what it would be like to fabricate a custom street rod. Trouble is, both you and I cannot fit within the confines of a tiny Model A truck cab. Then there are chassis for the ’32 to ’34 cars and trucks as well as the growing popularity of the 1935 to ’41 Ford cars and trucks, which share the same chassis by the way. Enough of the early rides. My hair really stands up each time I get to see a custom chassis for an F-1 or F-100 truck frame. I could use this whole page describing the positive assets of installing a brand new chassis under your old Ford truck, the single most advantageous comment being that Ford never made a chassis for these trucks that is as strong, rigid and capable of handling the horsepower that modern engine and transmissions can deliver. But the topic of this article is suspension. Previously, if you considered acquiring a TCI chassis you had two options: either the traditional Mustang II coil/spring front suspension or the slightly more expensive Coil Over Shock suspended Independent Front Suspension. Now there is a new suspension option on the block. Previously, if you wanted the economic savings of the coil spring/shock absorber front end, once you installed the properly rated coil spring (for a small or big block) as well as the Monroe shock, you got what you bought. The only option is to literally take the springs in and out, trimming a little off the bottom coil until the ride height is just right. Now, there is a new option on the block. It is called the Retro Fit Coil Over Shock Kit, designed to replace the spring and shock of the Mustang II suspension. You get the All American Coil Over Shock with a 16-way adjustment knob for infinite fine tuning of the ride as well as a large diameter spring which delivers a softer ride than the standard Mustang II 14-inch tall spring. You also have the ability to adjust spring compression by tightening the bottom retainer ring on the shock body. This allows you to level your truck as well as fine tune the spring’s strength. So, if your ride is equipped with a Mustang II suspension, you now have the option of installing a billet coil over shock kit which will modernize your truck’s ride and deliver that car-like ride you are searching for. Food for thought! Steve Stillwell President Pickups Limited, Orange County Chapter steve@pickupslimited.com

truckin... By ed oe PUL Orange County members took home TWO “Best of Show” trophys at the recent John Force Holiday Car Show at the John Force Race Station which once again benefited California Highway Patrol’s “CHiP’s For Kids” toy drive. Congratulations to Rich Miller and Ron Smith for their awards! Thousands of people wandered through one of the largest gatherings of hot rods, muscle cars, vintage cars, trucks and exotic cars. Throughout the day, toys, stuffed animals, and games poured into the John Force Racing Station as fans toured the workshop, offices, and store. Threatening weather and other events kept the Chapter attendance lower than normal and Norm Marshall had electrical issues driving to the show but made it in the family car. Other members in attendance helped pass out Jeff’s Fun Run flyers. The rain drops stayed away most of the day. Over 900 registered for the show. John and family were making their rounds and the kids made out with a hill full of toys for Christmas. Thank you Craig Hoelzel and the John Force Race Station for hosting this event. Once again you did an excellent job! Ed Oe VP Pickups Limited ph 714-552-1919 www.pickupslimited.com www.f100westernnationals.com www.jeffsfunrun.com

The MOONEYES Xmas Show & Drags is always full of special things to see. Drag Racing nostalgia style (opposite page) brings back plenty of memories. You can never have too many carburetors (left) with unique plumbing and linkage to go with them. I didn’t see anybody taking a bath in the portable MOON tub (middle) but it was early in the day. This high tech security system (bottom) beats the heck out of “The Club”. Hauln’ Freight • January - February 2013

Give Me A Brake... by Glenn Kerr

There’s Safety In Numbers Remember watching Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom with Marlin Perkins? Wild Kingdom was first aired on NBC in 1963 and produced new shows into 1987. What were the names of the pet chimpanzees that were often featured? “W. K.” and “Mr. Moke”. If you’ll remember too, most animals who gathered in herds did so for safety. There really is safety in numbers. For example. Any time we, as a club travel together, we are better suited to handle emergencies, like in the aircraft industry the term “We had a Mechanical”. In car speak that means somebody broke down.

Turkey Run... Rain or Shine

On November 17th a few brave soles ventured out in questionable weather for Pickup Limited’s Annual Turkey Run. As it turned out, the weather was absolutely perfect. The only moisture we got was about 60 seconds of sprinkle while parked on a bluff in Palos Verdes overlooking a beautiful coast line. It was there that “we had a Mechanical”, or in other words, Chris’ truck failed to start (DNS). You know that sinking feeling. You’re 45 miles from home, and in LA County. You turn the key and all you hear is... click... click. A quick inspection revealed a loose terminal on the starter. No problem, right? Wrong... it’s not loose, it came off and is held on by one lonely wire.

We’re Guys and We Do What Guys Do

Well... We’re guys. What do guys do? They fix things. No way we’re going to let Chris get out of leading this run early by taking a tow truck home. Not if we can help it. After a brief discussion on the best way to jack up Chris’ truck, it’s up in the air. Rich is bringing out a cushion to lay on, Larry’s underneath it removing the starter. Chris has his tool box open and grabbing things for Larry just like the nurse on that TV doctor show. Bill has his jumper battery back at the ready, Rudy is giving advise and Scott is on the phone to O’Reilly Auto Parts ordering a new starter. And I’m doing what I do best, supervising. Somebody has be that guy. 20 www.pickupslimited.com

Hauln’ Freight • January - February 2013

So, we have the stater out and realize a stock Ford starter isn’t going to work. No Plane Jane starter for Chris. Due to interference with the custom oil pan and headers, Chris uses a Super Johnny Power Master starter. Now what do we do? Remember, we’re guys. We fix things, or at least try to. After removing the starter cover we found the wire and terminal have parted company. Not to fear. We can fix this. A jumper wire is connected and threaded out the hole the terminal used to live in. It even turned out to be purple too. The proper color for a starter wire. About this time we get an unexpected visitor to our little party. One of Palos Verde’s finest comes cruising up. Apparently someone called about a prowler in the area. Are you kidding me? We’re several miles into this exclusive community with only one road in and out. Seeing we didn’t fit the description of prowlers, she then decided she didn’t like the way we had our trucks spread out in the center of the cul-de-sac. So we’re kicked to curb. PV must be an exciting place to patrol on Saturday afternoon. It takes Larry less time to install the starter than it did for him to take it out. Good going Larry. You should work in the automotive industry. You’re pretty good, ya know.

All’s Well That Ends Well

When Chris hits the ignition, Bingo! The engine roars to life. Everybody, especially Chris, take a sigh of relief. No AAA today. The herd gathers again and slowly moves on. We’re guys. If we can’t fix it, we’ll jack it up so bad that nobody can. As always, if you have any questions, please free to call me. And as always, if I don’t know the answer or can’t find one, I’ll make one up that sounds plausible.

bigfoot speaks...

by Rudy Weber

It’s a new year. Check out your truck first. It is all about the nuts and bolts but first check out the nut behind the wheel. Get a checkup from your doctor to make sure that you are OK then start on your truck. Start by looking at every part of your ride that moves and lube or oil them. Check your tires too. A are they old or going flat? Then check your starter. Is it starting to drag in this cold weather? Lights too. Are they bright? Can you see a reasonable distance at night with them on? Check all of them. If you drive like I do, the most important part of your truck is your Horn. Get a louder Horn and have fun. Bumpers... are yours loose or missing bolts? Too often bolts are removed to make thing look better so add bolts before the bumpers fall off. Also check your wheels. We need your truck looking and driving in good condition so we don’t run into each other on our outings. We have our truck inspection comming Saturday March 16, 2013 at Glenn’s Alignment & Brake. We all need our trucks looking and working at their best for Jeff’s Fun Run on January 19th in Memory of Jeff Hornsby. We want to show off all of our rides and brag about our trucks and our great Club, Pickups Limited Orange County. Rudy Weber 22 www.pickupslimited.com

HOW MANY GUYS DIES IT TAKE TO PAINT A SIGN IN TAICHUNG, TAIWAN? According to this photo taken by a friend in early November of 2012, it takes not only 3 guys (2 to steady the ladder), but a 55 gallon rendering barrel with a chunk of plywood on top to hold the 20’ extension ladder! It is always a good idea to have a clean and clear work area under you. I especially like the “shared” A/C unit duct from upstairs living quarters to the downstairs restaurant... lots going on in this picture for sure. As Rudy says, SAFETY FIRST!

WHAT’S WITH THE INSTRUCTION SHEET?

Editor’s Ramblings... get up and get going by Chris Travers

The last thing I do for every newsletter is to write my editorial. I do this for several reasons, one being that I don’t want to duplicate what Steve, Ed, Glenn, or Rudy might be writing about. The other reason is that it is my responsibility to fill the space on these pages to the best of my ability. Guess what? There wasn’t much space left over for this issue! Lucy me! There is however one commitment I’m asking for besides those typical Happy New Year’s resolutions as we all get ready to fall off the Fiscal Cliff, and that is for you all to step up your commitment to drive your truck more this year. Bring it to the meeting, go to a cruise night or the Donut Shop a few more times this year and last but not least, join us more often for some of the great outings we go on. Remember if you need any help getting something fized on your truck, check with Rudy and he will get some of us together and get you on the road... WHERE YOU BELONG! 24 www.pickupslimited.com

Safe Driving Resolutions for the New Year The holidays are over, the new year is in full swing, and people everywhere are making good on a

variety of resolutions. While eating right, exercising more, and getting to bed earlier are all great things to strive for, the California Office of Traffic Safety is encouraging people to add driving safely to the top of their list of resolutions to keep for 2013. Driving safely is more than just following posted speed limits and wearing seat belts, it’s planning ahead, preparing yourself and your vehicle for the unknown, always being free of distractions while behind the wheel, and much more. The first step toward keeping this important resolution is to prepare your vehicle for winter weather conditions. The following checklist is designed to help vehicle owners ensure their car or truck is in top condition before hitting the road:

Safety First

• Always wear your seat belt and make sure your passengers do, too • If you plan on drinking, be sure to plan ahead and designate a sober driver • Don’t talk or text while driving – even with a hands-free device. If you need to make a call or respond to a text, pull over in a safe place to do so • Avoid becoming hostile or angry toward aggressive drivers

Check Your Tires

• Check your tire pressure monthly. The best way to avoid flats and blowouts is to monitor your tire pressure and meet manufacturer’s recommendations for pressure levels • Inspect your tires a few times per year. If your tread is worn down to 1/16 of an inch, your tires need to be replaced. Check for uneven wear and tear; this may indicate you need a tire rotation or wheel alignment • Always carry a spare tire that is inflated to manufacturer pressure recommendations. It will help save you time and money if faced with a flat tire

Belts and Hoses

• Inspect all of your vehicle’s belts and hoses to make sure that they are in good working condition. Look for signs of blisters, cracks or cuts in the rubber, and replace old and worn-out hoses as necessary. Also, check all hose connections to make sure that they are secure and are not showing signs of leaks or tears

Wiper Blades

• Inspect your wiper blades and replace them if they appear brittle, cracked or torn. Or just make a habit of changing them out once a year after summer

Heating and Cooling Systems

• Check your coolant levels to make sure they meet manufacturer recommendations and make note if it is time for your system to be flushed and refilled

Fluid Levels

• Maintain a regular oil change schedule. Be sure to check your oil levels often and keep up with regular services • Check all other fluid levels in your vehicle, including: power steering, transmission, brake, coolant, and wiper fluid. Make sure all of the reservoirs are filled and check for signs of leakage

Lights

• Check all brake lights, headlights, turn indicators, emergency flashers, dome and interior lights and trailer lights if applicable. Re place old, broken, or burnt out light bulbs in your vehicle. This will ensure that you not only see the road, but that you are also seen by other drivers

Safety and First Aid Kits

• Keep a first aid kit and a roadside safety kit handy for roadside emergencies • Pack plenty of water, food, warm blankets and extra clothing, as sometimes road closures make for lengthy traffic delays. Also be sure your gas tank is full. It may be necessary to change routes or turn back during a bad storm or you may be caught in a traffic delay

Documentation

• Always carry updated insurance and registration information • Be sure to carry a list of your emergency contact information either in your glove box or your wallet By taking these important steps you are not only following through on an important New Year’s resolution, but also ensuring a safe season of winter driving for yourself and your passengers. photo review of 2012...

by chris travers

1/1/12 - TOUR D’ORANGE Over 500 vehicles of all sizes, shapes, styles, and value assemble each year for the first event of the year in the O.C. A route of about 2 hours driving starts near the John Wayne Airport and ends at where else... In-N-Out Burger in Tustin. That’s Al and Pam Ubrun taking off just behind the red Mustang.

1/21/12 - JEFF’S FUN RUN A hard rain hit us in the early morning but it developed into a picture postcard day. About 80 hard cores arrived on the 21st but we ran a “make up event” two weeks later that attracted an additional 45 vehicles. Those guys on the left all came in the same Surburban to have a good time. 2/5/12 - HILLCO SUPER BOWL SUNDAY CAR SHOW Great food and drawing and it’s a quickie having everybody home in time for the big game (and commercials). Jack Hill says that a new attendance record was set with over 600 vehicles attended this FREE event... are you going to question a guy holding a hubcap? 3/10/12 - ANNUAL SAFETY CHECK AT GLENN’S So you think your truck is in great shape huh? Just wait until it rests on a lift with a jury of your peers crawling over it. Great fun and a fantastic learning experience for everybody. Larry & Chris teamed up for the underside inspections. 4/4/12 - NHRA TWILIGHT CRUISE This over-the-top cruise night is a destination for hundreds of hot rodders each year. The O.C. Chapter was joined by members of Inland and Pomona with dinner following at Jim Moore’s Cafe Cabo in LaVerne. 26 www.pickupslimited.com

4/28/12 SEAL BEACH CAR SHOW This exclusive event is sold out every year but thanks to Glenn Kerr’s connections and exchanging some volunteer judging time, the Orange County Chapter has our own reserved parking lot to display in.

6/22-23, 2012 30th ANNUAL F-100 WESTERN NATIONALS Now a nationally recognized “CAN’T MISS” event, we went over the top to bring people and photos from the past for everybody to see. Friday’s cruise featured a great route and a visit to the NHRA Museum in Pomona.

7/13/12 - RUBY’S REDONDO BEACH FRIDAY CRUISE Thanks to Norm Marshall, reserved parking was arranged and probably all of the awards as the O.C. Chapter swept everything. We ate dinner early so that we could have a second desert after the cruise. 14 trucks attended.

8/25/12 CHINO CORN FEED RUN One of the best shows in the Inland Empire, the Orange County Chapter is asked by Walt Pocock to assist in parking the 500+ cars and trucks each year. The show takes place at the Chino Civic Center and includes a display of working big rig trucks. The high point of the morning however is breakfast at the Guasti Cafe just down the street. we needed the walk back especially Carlos. Tired of sitting at home? You probably have nobody to blame but yourself! Don’t blame it on your truck because there are plenty of guys just waiting to dig in and help you with any problems you might have. Just look at only a few of the things your Chapter did in 2012 and more than half of these events were FREE! Plan to be a part of a bigger and better 2013. Hauln’ Freight • January - February 2013

the rest of 2012

9/22/12 - 13th ANNUAL CRUISIN’ FOR A CURE -- The largest One Day Charity car show in the country, Cruisin’ for a Cure has provided screening for Prostrate Cancer to thousands of men over the past 13 years resulting in hundreds of lives being saved. Pickups Limited of Orange County was proud to present Debbie Baker with a donation of $1,500 that was earned fro our events over the past year. F-100’s were provided our usual “reserved parking” location right on the cruise route. Burgers were provided by the club and cookec by Glenn and Mas. All Chapters were invited. 10/6/12 - BOBCO ALL CHAPTERS PICNIC This long over due event sponsored by the National Council brought 50 members together at the shop that has been such a valuable asset for the Club, BOBCO. Thanks to Dusty Peetoom, Rich Miller, and Glenn Kerr for bringing the food together. 11/17/12 - PALOS VERDES TURKEY RUN Great food and breathtaking views of the coast and high rent real estate were the high points of this ren. Only a few drops of rain hit us during my breakdown for a starter issue which Larry Lopez took care of in short order.

12/8/12 - MOONEYES XMAS SHOW & DRAGS Over 2,500 cars and 50,000+ people made this show unique and crowded. Over the top is an understatement for this event. Glenn provided a pot of “special recipe” chilli to warm us up. Despite the huge crowd we had a great time. There is a plan for next year to make parking more desirable for everybody. 28 www.pickupslimited.com

PICKUPS LIMITED W A N T S You and your

1948 - 1956 FORD F-1 & F-100 TRUCK ABOUT US

Pickups Limited began in April, 1968 as the result of an ad placed in the Penny Saver. Our Orange County Chapter is the oldest and currently the largest of 7 Chapters found throughout Southern California, with membership limited to 1948-56 F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels. We are an active non-profit organization. Each June we host the largest all Ford truck show in the Western United States, the F-100 Western Nationals while every January we produce Jeff’s Fun Run, a poker run throughout the car culture of LA and Orange Counties. Our business meetings are on the second Thursday of each month at Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park (info below) and we usually plan one group outing each month. Check the flip side of this flyer for a sample of Pickups Limited’s Orange County Chapter events. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

• Where can I buy an F-100? You would be surprised where they show up. Trucks can be found on E-bay, Auto and Truck Trader and in Drive magazine as well as various F-1 & F-100 on-line sites including pickupslimited.com and at many of the local cruise events. You might even find one in your own neighborhood! If you feel adventurous, you can even build a brand new 1956 F-100 from parts that many vendors provide! • Where can I get parts and repairs? Check the flip side for a listing of great vendors that support Pickups Limited. • Can I do repairs myself? Many of us do most of the mechanical tasks ourselves. That’s half the fun. There also are many books available from mechanical to paint and body to interior total restoration. • Do I have to own a truck to join? Yes but it can be a work in progress. The love for the truck is what comes first. If you are looking for a truck, maybe we can help. • Do I have to be a member to participate in Club events? Not at all! Non members are always welcome. But if you do a "Run" in something other than a F-1 or F-100, we might ask you to follow the pack. • How can I get a ride in a F-100? Show up at a meeting or event and ask! • How can I join Pickups Limited? Come to a meeting or one of our events for the first step. There is a basic probationary period required. • Do I need special insurance for such an old vehicle? Not really, it depends on the value of the truck. Many companies will offer premium coverage although there are speciality insurance carriers that can insure your baby for the full stated value.
