Annual Turkey Run... November 16th

20 members and guests came out for a perfect day at the airport.

We met at the IKEA store off the 405 Freeway at Harbor for the short drive to the Lyon Air Museum at the John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana. Glenn Kerr stashed his prized GPS system to lead us on the short run to the museum.

Founded by Major General William Lyon, Lyon Air Museum is collocated with Martin Aviation, an Air/Lyon Inc. company and award-winning general aviation repair facility established by the famed Eddie Martin back in 1923.

The Lyon Air Museum exhibit is comprised of authentic aircraft, rare vehicles and related memorabilia, with emphasis on the defining event of the 20th century – World War II. Through captivating and thought provoking exhibits based in historical scholarship, visitors gain a better understanding of the important role the United States plays in shaping world history. continued on page 14

Looking back Five Years and Forward to 2014... by Steve Stillwell

I wish to thank everyone who voted me in office after then President Jeff Hornsby’s death on January 14, 2009. I was serving the club as Vice President and would have automatically become President, but insisted on an election. Unanimous as I recall even though I had turned my back to assure a fair election. Hard to believe that was five years ago!

Dale Beverly who has a long tenure with Pickups Limited, OC commented, “I can’t recall anyone having held the President’s title for five years, as you have. Guess that must be some kind of record.”

Dusty Peetom added, “Not only are you respected and known to the automotive industry, you are an orator and always speak well. I’ve seen you on TV and everybody knows you.

You have done a heck of a job leading our club meetings as well as doing the Western Nationals announcing.“ The F-100 Western Nationals has always been a pet project and I was determined to have more than one sponsor and one vendor at this event with so much potential. I invited the motor press to generate event exposure along with numerous major classic truck parts vendors to enhance the experience for attendees. Ed Oe, my Vice President for these past five years stepped up big time and “automated” the whole event from invites to registration and vendor commitments. Proudly, the F100 Western Nationals now pays its own way and enables our Non-Profit club the opportunity to contribute to our community while the dues from 40-plus members covers the cost of our annual Christmas dinner. The late Tom Chodak personally paid for my first dinner as a Pickups Limited member and I wanted to make sure he never had to do that twice! Goal achieved!

I am also proud to have made the call to our club members to come up with an event to assist Jeff Hornsby in paying his mounting medical bills.

Chris Travers grabbed this challenge by the horns by developing Jeff’s Fun Run. Ironically, we came up about a week short of having Jeff attend the very first poker run in his honor!

The long-time truck corral I created at Cruisin’ For A Cure during its second year of existence has morphed into Pickups Limited’s September club outing with huge exposure for PULOC as well as being one of our major club social events.

Negotiating with Ken Grody Ford to use his facility as our permanent club home, as well as slicing annual dues in half has become major feathers in my cap, but my largest achievement is now being surrounded by 40-plus dedicated members that I call best friends. (There were only seven members in the club when I joined.)

I appreciate the vote of confidence by being re-elected for 2014 and have begun to think of the challenges Pickups Limited will face in the coming year. Chris Travers pointed out that one of main strengths (that I learned well during my publishing career) is to not only lead, but how to delegate. Success can be judged by how well we have continued to grow and better yet, how well our talent pool has expanded especially during the past few years. We have become a tight-knit, well oiled machine with a bright future in continuing the promotion and restoration of our common bond, “fat fendered old Ford trucks.

Vice President’s Page...

I would like to thank the club membership for the privilege of serving the club as an officer this year. Even though I have been fortunate enough to hold every office position in our club (except Secretary which Gloria will cover) multiple times over 37 years, I believe we have one of the finest groups of members I can remember. By the way, can you remember who the Vice President in 2005 before Ed Oe was?

You will not hear me say “We used to do it this way in the club” unless I am asked, but I would like to mention a few of my early memories in the club as an introduction.

Last December meeting Chris Travers brought up the subject on what inspired us to select these trucks and to join the club. Can you think of what inspired you?

For me my interest began in High School and I was trying to decide on an older truck to haul my collection of motorcycles to the desert. I liked several models but the choice was finalized when I was at Knott’s Berry Farm in 1973 (B.G.) with my girlfriend (B.G. before Gloria) and I saw this 1955 F100 with paneling glued to the bed sides and wood strips on the running board. My search was over. I bought my first 1956 F-100 shortly after. I found out about our club when I was researching ideas to build mine through a Peterson’s magazine called “Pickups and Vans”. I attended a PULOC meeting with my dad at Anaheim Bowl in spring of 1973. I was too young to join but I was impressed with a parking lot full of F100’s and a meeting place too small to hold the over 100 members and guests. My dad and I both agreed we would do more work on the truck and come back when I was old enough to join.

Now its 40 years later, I am still in high school, and I still believe our trucks are one of the best looking vehicles on the road. My teaching at Foothill High School has led me into helping develop an Engineering program with another teacher. It is a four year program with the final culminating year being the Senior Project Design class. Some of the students this year have chosen to build a hot rod. At first we wanted to do a 1932 Ford roadster, but looking for a more affordable choice, we chose a 1929 Ford Sport Coupe at the advice of Steve Stillwell.

Of course any school project requires research. To help with that last November a group of us attended the SEMA show in Las Vegas. Also, included in that group was one of our students. Any one that has attended that show knows it is incredible, and it’s supposed to be the largest convention held in Las Vegas. I first heard of See page 20 for more on this truck SEMA when I was in high school and my best friend’s dad (Lou Baney) had been hired by Vic Edelbrock to help promote SEMA’s membership in the drag racing industry.

Later Lou became their executive director and was inducted to the SEMA hall of fame in 1992. For those that do not know what SEMA does, perhaps most importantly, SEMA works hard to protect consumers’ rights to drive accessorized, customized and vintage vehicles. It also keeps close tabs on legislators in Washington, D.C., and also in each state within the United States, so SEMA members and anyone who loves cars and trucks can protest pending legislation that might harm our hobby, as well as endorse legislation that’s good for car lovers. SEMA also has helped numerous consumers interact with car dealers, who sometimes try to get away with charging for repairs on a modified vehicle by claiming (wrongly) that specialty accessories have voided its warranty. Obviously it has grown immensely and can be a shot in the arm for anyone planning or involved with any kind of automotive project.

If you attend the SEMA show you will need multiple days to really do it justice. Every facet of the industry is represented. Chassis, engines, auto body, paint, interior, as well as tools and equipment are all represented. This year I was looking for industries that could help us with our 1929 Ford roadster school project. I was impressed at the interest that many of the companies took when they learned that the project was for high school students. They know that we need to generate interest in our “younger” generations to keep this industry alive. Most offered discounts or freebies to help make it happen. One product that grabbed my interest this year was the “dustless” media blasting. Most media blasting as most of you know is expensive and can make a mess. These systems use water, rust inhibitor and crushed recycled glass mix and you can even do your own blasting on your driveway with gloves and a face mask. No dust mask even needed! There are literally hundreds of manufacturers and products to see. Although the SEMA show is not open to the general public, if any club member has not been and is interested in attending 2014 let me know. I can invite guests through our school engineering program. The 2014 show will be November 4th thru the 7th.

In conclusion for this month, I am looking forward to another good year being involved with the best F100 club around and I am looking forward to seeing all of you at Jeff’s Fun Run coming up January 18th.

When I joined PULOC in 2005 there were only 7 members. I took the seat as VP in 2006 and will turn that seat back to a new group of leaders on January 1, 2014, with the chapter now at 40 plus members!

With each new member, the club grows stronger with talent and renewed commitment that makes this chapter one of the strongest and most desirable to join. The club was formed in 1968 and I have no doubt it will continue and be passed on to future generations to enjoy.

With all of our successes over the past 8 years, we have had our sad times as well. Within the sad times we grew stronger as club to endure together and give back.

I want to thank my fellow brothers and sisters for their support over these past years. It is time for me to give my full support to Dale and the rest of the officers as they lead us into the future. the role as an officer is not a new role for Dale, as I mentioned before. Dale has held mostly all seats in this club over his long 40 years of membership so we are in good hands.

I will continue as the chairman of the F100 Western Nationals.

Surf City Veterans Day Car Show... 11/11/13

What’s RIGHT with this picture? It’s the middle of November, 80° temperature, and there is a car show on the beach! My old buddies in Denver, Anabella (where the heck is that), and Seattle... EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT! Yes, shorts and Flip Flpos were the uniform of the day. The annual Surf City Veteran’s Car Show brought out tons of cars, bikes, and more. It’s easy for me to show you the “regular” hot rods, but how about something a little different... This IS So-Cal you know.

Thousands came to pay their respects to former and current US military. Many thanked vets, like Howard Phelps, 90, who served in the Navy in WWII, for helping preserve our country’s freedom.

Some wept at the 6-foot tall, 94-foot long “Wall of Remembrance.”

Everyone “feasted their eyes” on more than 300 cars, trucks, Woodies, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, VWs and Rat Rods.

Give Me A Brake...

Remembering Sue Nelson It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Sue Nelson, Scott’s wife. On Thursday November 6th, Sue suffered a massive stroke on her way home from work. Scott and Sue were among our clubs newest members, joining in October 2012.

Sue will ever be remembered for her big smile, beautiful blue eyes and zest for life. Every event, every outing, was better because Sue was there.

One of those outings was the Chino Air Show, in May 2013. As we sat watching the air show, Sue was busy helping some baby ground squirrels who strayed away from their mother. Sue was rounding them up and making sure they got back to where they belonged.

Scott and Sue had an eleven year courtship. In July this year they were married. No matter how hard Scott tried, things didn’t go smoothly with the wedding plans. Through it all, Sue still kept her smile. The marriage was the most important part to her, not the wedding. In return Scott promised Sue on every anniversary he would take her someplace nice and marry her again.

Sue’s last words to Scott on that fateful day were...”I love you”.

God be with you ‘till me meet again.

Annual Turkey Run from page 1

The Douglas DC-3 “FLAGSHIP OF ORANGE COUNTY” Lyon Air Museum’s own DC-3

in American Airlines livery, started life as a C-47A built during World War II. Prior to its conversion to airliner configuration, it flew with the USAAF’s famed 440th Troop Carrier Group. And just before

midnight on June 5, 1944, this aircraft was positioned at Exeter Field in England, ready to fly across the Channel with hundreds of other Dakotas. Its assigned mission: Drop members of the 101st Airborne, the Screaming Eagles, over Drop Zone DELTA, to support the D-Day invasion in Normandy at 1:40 AM, on the morning of June 6, 1944.

The Mission of Lyon Air Museum is to provide a quality venue of inspiration where the stories of aviation’s past can touch the lives of its visitors through educational exhibits, authentic historical aircraft and related memorabilia.

Special thanks fo Glenn Kerr who is buddies with one of the docents at the museum who provided us with special guided tours and all of the information on each item on diaplay. It was really a great experience.

Douglas C-47 “Skytrain” or “Dakota”

Lyon Air Museum’s C-47 Dakota, recently christened “Willa Dean,” has had a long and successful service life. Transferred from the USAAF to the French in May of 1945, this aircraft continued to fly for the most part unmodified, unlike so many of its contemporaries. In 1967 it again changed ownership, this time transferring to the Israelis. There, it continued service without major modification, ultimately being sold to the civilian market where it found its way to Lyon Air Museum as one of the most complete and original C-47s currently in operation. “Willa Dean” now carries the colors of the 440th Troop Carrier Group’s 97th Troop Carrier Squadron, complete with D-Day Invasion Stripes.

The Ford truck line has grown in many ways over the past half-century, but legendary KISS bassist Gene Simmons’ custom 1956 F100 brings the best of the past and the present together in one beautiful show truck--with a little added spice. To make it even sweeter, the special one-off will be auctioned for charity in 2014.

Unveiled at the 2013 SEMA show in Las Vegas, the ‘Snakebit’ truck was a collaboration between Simmons, his wife Shannon Tweed, and Ford, and it is styled to salute another aspect of Ford’s history: the Shelby Mustangs. A badge on the grille gives a direct nod to the high-performance muscle cars, but the Snakebit F100 also honors the legendary Shelbys in other ways.

Perhaps the most impressive homage to the Shelby Mustangs is the 550-horsepower Ford Racing supercharged V-8 engine under the hood. Displacing 5.4 liters, and backed by a six-speed manual gearbox, the engine should give the rear-drive resto-mod pickup all of the punch of its sportier cousins—not to mention a healthy dose of driving fun.

Extensive modifications were made to give the 1956 Ford F100 its new look: the wheelbase was lengthened five inches, a billet machined floor mimics a wood pattern, and 18-inch front wheels tuck up under the fenders, while 20-inch rear wheels help apply all of the 550 horses to the ground. The wheel designs were also inspired by the Shelby Mustangs.

Inside the Snakebit F100, a handmade interior features two-tone leather, a custom leather-wrapped dash, and a contoured bench seat from Glide Engineering designed to suggest the Shelby interior style.

Next year, the Snakebit F100 will be auctioned for charity at a Barrett-Jackson event. The proceeds will go toward construction of a children’s hospital in Tweed’s hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Tom Foster, president of Saskatoon’s Industrial Machine & Manufacturing originally conceived the idea for the custom truck and charity benefit. Foster also named the project “Wheels of Dreams.”

“The Wheels of Dreams project symbolizes how people can come together to meet the needs of our children and families by raising much needed funds for the new Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan,” said Brynn Boback-Lane, president and CEO of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan. “Just like the hospital, this concept car project started as an idea and a desire to do something better for our community.

“What began as a grassroots idea, the volunteers and supporters of Wheels of Dreams have turned into a major international fundraiser opportunity that will ultimately benefit our foundation and the children of Saskatchewan who require the services and care of a hospital,” Boback-Lane added.

EDITORIAL... Just One Thing at a Time by Chris Travers

Sometimes I wonder if I should just slow down and take things one at a time... But what fun would that be?

After all those Fat Fendered Trucks of ours are just for fun and relaxation aren’t they? Maybe this year I’ll get around to that paint job I have been wanting and maybe the new tranny too. But priorities must be set especially when it comes to play time!

Let’s see... First it was the full ICC Certification series I signed up for. The time frame for this is similar to taking an AA Degree all within 9 months...

No problem. It’s work related and will give me something to do I told myself. There is plenty of spare time for that I thought.

Then it started. I started doing some work on the ‘64 Austin Mini Cooper. Plenty of time for the truck later. Next came a whirlwind trip to Chicago for a recent Monday Night Football game. Great food and fun with my Son and a show game to boot!

They even retired Mike Ditka’s number for a perfect trip... Forget about the 8+ hour trip coming & going due to bad weather and mechanical problems. We even saw Santa in a blue & yellow suit trying to drink his frozen beer... It was worth it! I even studied for the #2 ICC test... Only 3 more to go! I even made sure to take along the recent edition of Classic Trucks so that I could at least keep thinking about my truck.

That’s multi tasking I thought to myself.

Add to that our recent complete home interior overhaul and the upcoming Jeff’s Fun Run (see pages 8-11) and I still have time to think about my truck. Maybe I should take a deep breath. Heck this newsletter is more than a week early, but that’s just because my computer will be down due to the house project.

Pickups Limited began in April, 1968 as the result of an ad placed in the Penny Saver. Our Orange County Chapter is the oldest and currently the largest of 7 Chapters found throughout Southern California, with membership limited to 1948-56 F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels. We are an active non-profit organization. Each June we host the largest all Ford truck show in the Western United States, the F-100 Western Nationals while every January we produce Jeff’s Fun Run, a poker run throughout the car culture of LA and Orange Counties. Our business meetings are on the second Thursday of each month at Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park (info below) and we usually plan one group outing each month. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

• Where can I buy an F-100? You would be surprised where they show up. Trucks can be found on E-bay, Auto and Truck Trader and in Drive magazine as well as various F-1 & F-100 on-line sites including pickupslimited.com and at many of the local cruise events. You might even find one in your own neighborhood! If you feel adventurous, you can even build a brand new 1956 F-100 from parts that many vendors provide!

• Where can I get parts and repairs? Check the flip side for a listing of great vendors that support Pickups Limited.

• Can I do repairs myself? Many of us do most of the mechanical tasks ourselves. That’s half the fun. There also are many books available from mechanical to paint and body to interior total restoration.

• Do I have to own a truck to join? Yes but it can be a work in progress. The love for the truck is what comes first. If you are looking for a truck, maybe we can help.

• Do I have to be a member to participate in Club events? Not at all! Non members are always welcome. But if you do a "Run" in something other than a F-1 or F-100, we might ask you to follow the pack.

• How can I get a ride in a F-100? Show up at a meeting or event and ask!

• How can I join Pickups Limited? Come to a meeting or one of our events for the first step. There is a basic probationary period required.

• Do I need special insurance for such an old vehicle? Not really, it depends on the value of the truck. Many companies will offer premium coverage although there are speciality insurance carriers that can insure your baby for the full stated value.
