4th Annual Jeff’s Fun Run ...
www.pickupslimited.com March - April 2012
by Chris Travers
The 4th Annual Jeff’s Fun Run is in the books and with all things considered, was a great success. Over 85 registrants showed up representing about 60 vehicles. Many friends did the car pool thing to minimize the inpact of our early morning rain which didn’t slow down all of the hot rodders. We had participants from Fresno, San Diego County, and Snohomish Washington. Not bad at all. A big thank you goes out to everybody that attended. Once all of the drivers got on the road the clouds blew away and actually gave us a real nice, but windy, day. The West Coast Challengers Club showed up in force bringing a nice highlight to a day that was a bit of a downer because of weather. These guys rolled up in formation and stuck together all day. They even provided a nice young lady to draw out the 50/50 winners just to keep things honest. Besides the great showing of MOPARS, it was fantastic to see about 12 guys drive their Hot Rods rain or shine! Like last The Re-Run... by Chris Travers year, the Fun Run began at Ken Grody Ford in Buena There was one thing missing from our January Park. After checking in and staging, The West Coast Jeff’s Fun Run and that was good weather. Sure things got real nice after 9:30 or so but let’s face Challengers were the first group to roll out and lead it... lots of people stayed away because of the wet the participants to various automotive hot spots in stuff. No big deal. We just had to have a make up and around Orange County. This years’ automotive day. Chopit Kustoms was good enough to let us hot spots on the route included Chopit Kustoms, start at their place where C.W. Moss, Reid’s Rod Parts, Kugel Komponents, 30 vehicles gathered Lime Works, to begin the day. Other stops included Reid’s Rod Moon Equipment Parts, CW Moss, 401K Company, and Club, CPP, & Moon. We finally ending at ended again at Bob’s in the famous Downey Bob’s Big Boy Cool cars Broiler in with new Downey. faces to

President’s Page... Adios Wendell Smith
By Steve Stillwell
This past February 4th, we had to say goodbye to Wendell Smith, a long time friend to Pickups Limited and dedicated member of our Chapter. Probably most important for this time of year, Wendell was proactive in coming up with and developing the first Pickups Limited sponsored F-100 Western Nationals. Ironically, Wendell was scheduled to help us celebrate the upcoming 30th Anniversary of this unique show. During my publishing career at the helm of Truckin’ magazine, I first met Wendell at one of the many classic truck events I would cover during the 1980’s. Smith’s customized pickup was selected for a cover shoot and our friendship blossomed. He would often suggest custom cars and trucks as potential feature vehicles which were outfitted with Ultra Wheels where he worked and shockingly, a company owned by his brother Jimmy Smith. Wendell loved life and was an avid Colorado River enthusiast. He even introduced me to a unique sport – with a few titles that I cannot publish. I had stayed at his home in Parker, Arizona when covering a custom truck show. Smith joined me on Sunday, and introduced me to a boating sport where you power all the way up to the Havasu dam, turn off the engine and float with the river’s current all the way back to Parker, then repeat until the beer ran out or boredom set in. I will never forget a loud, open header flat bottom boat speeding past and watching the driver sweep close to one of the bars located at river’s edge. Wendell pointed towards the bar and added, “I bet he doesn’t know about a big rock that’s just underwater or he wouldn’t be going that close.” We heard a big bang, watched the flat bottom bounce out of the water, and then sink in a big pool of steam. Wendell made sure the boaters made it to shore, then continued upstream, always wearing an ear-to-ear grin. The man was always smiling. He followed up on his love for off-road racing by being a key member of the Smith Racing Team who owned and sponsored one of the first successful race trucks in what was then the Craftsman NASCAR Truck Racing Series. Ironically, I had convinced McMullen Publishing to pair up with NASCAR to publish NASCAR Truck Racing magazine with Wendell providing a lot of inside information to enable the magazine to be deeply informative. Most recently, Smith owned and operated Renegade Wheels which featured the most radical wheels ever mass produced for custom motorcycle enthusiasts. At the age of 59, Wendell Smith suffered a fatal heart attack while having a fun weekend at his beloved Parker, Arizona. He will be missed, especially at the upcoming F-100 Western Nationals which he helped launch some 30 years ago. It is tough to accept that he is forever lost to all of us.

Editor’s Ramblings...
Here We Go Again... Winding up for 2012... by Chris Travers What a start we have had for 2012. Starting with the Tour d’Orange on January 1st before we moved into all of the events leading up to the 4th Annual Jeff’s Fun Run; the City of Hope Tour, Visit to see Jeff, BBQ at Al Ubrun’s place in Riverside was more than some groups do in a whole year! But we were just getting going. February brought along Jeff’s 4.5 - THE RE-RUN as a makeup for our January event (AND 85 HARD CORE PEOPLE) that had just a bit of rain. The RE-RUN drew almost 30 vehicles and gave us yet another great garage tour... All for free! And with all of that, we are just getting going! March is full of fun with the annual Safety Check on the 10th followed by the CPP Cruise and Open House on the 17th. All of that is just a warm up to the NHRA Twilight Cruise and Show (where we are the featured club) on April 4th and just a preview of what the rest of 2012 has for us. AND DID I MENTION THAT ALL OF THIS IS FREE TO YOU GUYS? With gas prices spiking up, I’ll do my best for the Chapter to make every effort to help you guys keep your bucks for the truck, not for entry fees. Take the time to look over the events listing in this issue on pages 20 & 21 and attend the “OFFICIAL CHAPTER EVENTS”. Remember one of the best parts of belonging to the Orange County Chapter of Pickups Limited is that we are famous for driving our trucks... Not just towing them around on trailers to events. Be a part of it in 2012. Chris Travers - Newsletter Editor & Events chris@pickupslimited.com

from page 1
Events like these are always difficult to pull off when conditions are perfect but this year we were given extra challenges that our Chapter members faced and brought the event in with a modest profit which will be turned over to The City of Hope in the near future. A big thanks to the entire Orange County Chapter for manning card stops, paring cars and providing traffic control, working registration, and selling shirts and 50/50 tickets. Thanks to everybody for your great support! Here was a great example of friendship and making the most out of the situation. These guys from the La Habra area all piled into a Surburban and enjoyed the run together. That’s what it’s all about! Rain didn’t keep Angelo Palmer and his wife from Downey away. They attend almost everything on the local scene and with Bob’s being right in their backyard Jeff’s Fun Run is an annual favorite of theirs.
The Norwoods from the Ventura County chapter of Pickups Limited joined the Bartnick and Willett clan to make it a day. These guys always have fun wherever they go. We appreciate their support in everything we do in the O.C.

Visit to Jeff & BBQ at Al’s... January 14th Where the heck is Riverside? Besides the fact that it’s about 12 miles east of who knows where, that’s where Al & Pam Ubrun call home. After a nice group of 10 trucks paid our respects to Jeff at the nearby National Cemetery, we did what any other trucker would do... Get some food. With Al’s invitation just too good to pass up, that where we went. The Ubruns have what you might call a family compound with Pam’s sister right next door and both houses sitting on some real acreage that us city folks can only dream about. Al’s Dad was a car nut and a collector leaving a ton of vehicles and parts behind for Al to have and work on. As you can see from the photos, Al has done a ton of work, but still has a long way to go.

City of Hope Tour... January 13th After three years of holding our Jeff’s Fun Run events to benefit Cancer research, we finally met our fund rasing goal at the City of Hope. This donation goal for research was setup in the memory of Jeff Hornsby and created a plaque in his memory. Today was our dedication day and a nice size group of 18 members including Jeff’s wife, Debbie. We were graciously treated to a luncheon and tour of their research entire hospital. To say that we were treated like kings and queens is an understatement. We were all made to feel at home and important with all questions were answered fully. The tour included the research center where we met the head of the division who explained some of their current projects. City of Hope is one of 40 Comprehensive Cancer Centers, the highest designation bestowed by the National Cancer Institute and a recognition of excellence in cancer treatment, research, prevention and education. This beautiful Duarte campus treats between 600 and 1,000 patients PER DAY so you can see that these are some busy people. Part of their philosophy is to treat the mind and soul as well as the body which explains the peacefulness that surrounded us all day. Give Me A Brake... by Glenn Kerr People Are Strange
Just Another Day In Paradise
Joe Customer called the shop the other day. The conversation started out like most calls. “Thank you for calling, Glenn speaking”. “Glenn, this is Joe Customer. I’ve been bringing my cars to your shop for years. Can you do an alignment on my Honda?” I tell him “Sure, is Wednesday good for you?”, and ask “are you having any problems with the alignment?” “No, I just need it checked”, Joe tells me. As I’m writing down his information on the appointment book Joe starts telling me he just got his car back from the body shop. I’m starting to suspect Joe isn’t telling me everything.
Any Problems With Your Car?
“Joe”, I say, “any steering or vibration problems with your Honda?”. “No, it’s just that after I got it back from the body shop it pulls to the left and has kind of a hop at freeway speeds”. I’m thinking to myself, no problems? Sounds like problems to me. As I’m giving him an estimate on costs for the services he’s requested, Joe starts to tell me how he just needs a simple alignment and balance. In his mind the repairs shouldn’t take very long and our estimate shouldn’t be that high.
The Tail Isn’t Going To Wag This Dog
By now I’m not sure this is going to work out for us. I check our vehicle history files for cars he’s had into our shop. One car. One service record, four years ago. He’s been to our shop once, for a minor service. At this point I’m not too keen on whether he comes in for us to solve his problems or not. I proceed to explain even though we’ll be charging for a routine alignment and balance service, we will be spending more time than normal to properly diagnose his complaint, do the appropriate repairs and then spend more time to verify the intended results. Including extended test drives. 12 www.pickupslimited.com 13
Hauln’ Freight • March - April 2012
I won’t go into the direction we went from there except to say our conversation centers around why he shouldn’t be having this problem after the body shop repairs, why they should be responsible and why he doesn’t want to go back to them to solve his problems.
All’s Good That Ends Good
A few days later he shows up on his appointed day. Joe has decided to wait for his car, even though I told him he’d need to drop it off for the better part of a day. I’ve been to this rodeo before and stay the course. It’s a busy day, and we’ll do the best we can to accommodate him, but we won’t deviate from our normal diagnostic procedures and the order of things we do to solve these types of problems. In the end, we solved Joe’s pulling and ‘hopping’ complaints. He drives off to visit the body shop and ask for a reimbursement, which he’ll get. As Roseanne Roseannadanna would say, “Well it just goes to show you, it’s always something”. The moral of this story, besides people are strange? Sometimes you’ve just got get out of the way and let the experts do what the experts do. It’s about trust. As always, if you have any questions, please free to call me. And as always, if I don’t know the answer or can’t find one, I’ll make one up that sounds plausible.

9th Annual Tour d’Orange
by Chris Travers
Want to start 2012 off with a car drive in Southern California with no traffic? If your answer was yes, then you were probably at the 9th Annual “Tour d’Orange. www.BenchRacing.com what is arguably the finest “NON-EVENT” each year for those that aren’t too hung over on New Year’s morning. Over 400 vehicles of all kinds joined a nice group from Pickups Limited in what has become Southern California tradition for many at the corner of Fisher and Redhill in Costa Mesa bright and early for a 50+ mile cruise through some of Orange County’s most scenic and fun roads, ending at the In-N-Out Burger in The District in Irvine. I call this a “NON-EVENT” because there is no advertising or flyers of any kind, just word of mouth and social media to spread the message... and it works. With over 400 vehicles from new to old, simple to exotic, the rich and famous (yes that’s Car Crazy Barry Meguiar with his flamed roadster) to a group from Pickups Limited, this is truly a sight to behold. Al and Pam Ubrun worked their way through a flock of bombarding seagulls from Riverside to join in with Rich, Dan, Ed & Ellie, Dusty and his grandson, and me in my ‘64 Mini Cooper for a great morning of looking and driving. Besides the great drive through the Corona Del Mar, Laguna Beach, Oak Canyon, and Irvine Lake areas, the overload of vehicles ranging from a brand new Morgan to Cobra Daytona kit cars, classic Model A’s, land yacht Cadillacs, street rods and yes, a bunch of fat fendered Fords, there was really too much to take in. It was the closest thing you can get to a real Cannonball Run!

63rd Annual Grand National Roadster Show
The GNRS is now in its 63rd year. Once known as the Oakland Roadster Show, it is the longest running indoor car show in the world! Produced at the Fairplex in Pomona for the 9th consecutive year. Over 500 show vehicles competed for awards inside all of the Fairplex buildings. Another 400-800 vehicles joined the event Saturday & Sunday for the 7th Annual Grand Daddy Drive-In. We know that this is known as a Roadster Show, but look at all the trucks! Walking round with Rich and Dan was lots of fun too. It seems like every where we went we ran into friends like Jack Keefer (formally of the SG Chapter) , Norm roberts and his Olds V-8 powered VW, Jim Ketter (my buddy from Washington that comes down for Jeff’s Fun Run), the Chopit gang , Jack Mattson was showing off his custom radiators and the group from BOBCO. A TOOL is one who lacks the mental capacity to know he is being used... or just a gearhead.
TOOLS DEFINED:
DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it. WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, ‘Oh sh--!’ SKILL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short. PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters. BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs. HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes. VISE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand. OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race. TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity. HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper. BAND SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge. TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect. PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads. STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms. PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part. HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit. UTILITY KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use. SON-OF-A-BITCH TOOL: (A personal favorite!!) Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling ‘Son of a BITCH!’ at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.

Car Tunes... The Story of Motorola Car Radios
Thanks to Bob Weinrich of the Family Corvette Restoriation Team
SUNDOWN One evening in 1929 two young men named William Lear and Elmer Wavering drove their girlfriends to a lookout point high above the Mississippi River town of Quincy , Illinois , to watch the sunset. It was a romantic night to be sure, but one of the women observed that it would be even nicer if they could listen to music in the car. Lear and Wavering liked the idea. Both men had tinkered with radios – Lear had served as a radio operator in the U. S. Navy during World War I – and it wasn’t long before they were taking apart a home radio and trying to get it to work in a car. But it wasn’t as easy as it sounds: automobiles have ignition switches, generators, spark plugs, and other electrical equipment that generate noisy static interference, making it nearly impossible to listen to the radio when the engine was running. SIGNING ON One by one, Lear and Wavering identified and eliminated each source of electrical interference. When they finally got their radio to work, they took it to a radio convention in Chicago . There they met Paul Galvin, owner of Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. He made a product called a “battery eliminator” a device that allowed battery-powered radios to run on household AC current. But as more homes were wired for electricity, more radio manufacturers made AC-powered radios. Galvin needed a new product to manufacture. When he met Lear and Wavering at the radio convention, he found it. He believed that mass-produced, affordable car radios had the potential to become a huge business. Lear and Wavering set up shop in Galvin’s factory, and when they perfected their first radio, they installed it in his Studebaker. Then Galvin went to a local banker to apply for a loan. Thinking it might sweeten the deal, he had his men install a radio in the banker’s Packard. Good idea, but it didn’t work half an hour after the installation, the banker’s Packard caught on fire. (They didn’t get the loan). Galvin didn’t give up. He drove his Studebaker nearly 800 miles to Atlantic City to show off the radio at the 1930 Radio Manufacturers Association convention. Too broke to afford a booth, he parked the car outside the convention hall and cranked up the radio so that passing conventioneers could hear it. That idea worked – he got enough orders to put the radio into production. WHAT’S IN A NAME That first production model was called the 5T71. Galvin decided he needed to come up with something a little catchier. In those days many companies in the phonograph and radio businesses used the suffix “ola” for their names – Radiola, Columbiola, and Victrola were three of the biggest. Galvin decided to do the same thing, and since his radio was intended for use in a motor vehicle, he decided to call it the Motorola. But even with the name change, the radio still had problems: • When Motorola went on sale in 1930, it cost about $110 uninstalled, at a time when you could buy a brand-new car for $650, and the country was sliding into the Great Depression. (By that measure, a radio for a new car would cost about $3,000 today.) • In 1930 it took two men several days to put in a car radio – the dashboard had to be taken apart so that the receiver and a single speaker could be installed, and the ceiling had to be cut open to install the antenna. These early radios ran on their own batteries, not on the car battery, so holes had to be cut into the floorboard to accommodate them. The installation manual had eight complete diagrams and 28 pages of instructions. 18 www.pickupslimited.com 19

HIT THE ROAD
Selling complicated car radios that cost 20 percent of the price of a brand-new car wouldn’t have been easy in the best of times, let alone during the Great Depression – Galvin lost money in 1930 and struggled for a couple of years after that. But things picked up in 1933 when Ford began offering Motorolas pre-installed at the factory. In 1934 they got another boost when Galvin struck a deal with B. F. Goodrich tire company to sell and install them in its chain of tire stores. By then the price of the radio, installation included, had dropped to $55. The Motorola car radio was off and running. (The name of the company would be officially changed from Galvin Manufacturing to “Motorola” in 1947.) In the meantime, Galvin continued to develop new uses for car radios. In 1936, the same year that it introduced push-button tuning, it also introduced the Motorola Police Cruiser, a standard car radio that was factory preset to a single frequency to pick up police broadcasts. In 1940 he developed with the first handheld two-way radio – the Handie-Talkie – for the U. S. Army. A lot of the communications technologies that we take for granted today were born in Motorola labs in the years that followed World War II. In 1947 they came out with the first television to sell under $200. In 1956 the company introduced the world’s first pager; in 1969 it supplied the radio and television equipment that was used to televise Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the Moon. In 1973 it invented the world’s first handheld cellular phone. Today Motorola is one of the second-largest cell phone manufacturer in the world. And it all started with the car radio.
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO….
The two men who installed the first radio in Paul Galvin’s car, Elmer Wavering and William Lear, ended up taking very different paths in life. Wavering stayed with Motorola. In the 1950’s he helped change the automobile experience again when he developed the first automotive alternator, replacing inefficient and unreliable generators. The invention lead to such luxuries as power windows, power seats, and, eventually, air-conditioning. Lear also continued inventing. He holds more than 150 patents. Remember eight-track tape players? Lear invented that. But what he’s really famous for are his contributions to the field of aviation. He invented radio direction finders for planes, aided in the invention of the autopilot, designed the first fully automatic aircraft landing system, and in 1963 introduced his most famous invention of all, the Lear Jet, the world’s first mass-produced, affordable business jet. (Not bad for a guy who dropped out of school after the eighth grade.) Hauln’ Freight • March - April 2012

Buying “Lemons” and Out of Business Dealerships With the current state of the economy, many businesses have been struggling to keep their doors open. Car dealerships have also been affected, and many have gone out of business. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has tips and services that can assist you in finding the answers you need to tie up any loose ends with an out-of-business dealership from which you have just purchased a car. Car owners are finding that after they have finished their payments, often times, dealers are not sending the vehicles title to the owner. If this happens to you, you can send a completed Application for Title and Registration (REF 343) along with the appropriate paperwork to: Department of Motor Vehicles Registration Operations PO Box 942869 Sacramento, California 94269-0001 If you were making payments to the dealer for a vehicle but are unable locate them to finish payment, you can verify the dealer’s business license and owner information with the DMV’s Occupational Licensing Unit. If you are unsatisfied with what you find, you may also file a complaint against the dealer through the unit. While no action will be taken immediately since the dealer is out of business, the complaints are kept on file and will be taken into consideration if the dealer decides to apply for another business license. Contact the Occupational Licensing Unit for specific information on how to continue payment to obtain the vehicle’s title. When businesses are struggling, so are consumers. People start to pinch their pennies and scour for that great deal and everyone wants a great deal when purchasing a vehicle. However, something that looks too good to be true usually comes with a catch, so be sure to read the fine print before finalizing your purchase. Familiarize yourself with the history of the vehicle and to check if it is a “lemon.” A “lemon” is a type of vehicle that has been reacquired by a vehicle manufacturer because it has had one or more specified warranty defects. The Lemon Law applies to new vehicles up until the 18th month or 18,000 miles are logged on the vehicle’s odometer, whichever is reached first. If the manufacturer or dealer can’t repair a serious warranty defect in your vehicle after a “reasonable” number of attempts, the manufacturer must either replace the vehicle or refund its purchase price (whichever you prefer)There is no set number for a “reasonable” amount of attempts, but the California Lemon Law Presumption provides these guidelines: • After four or more attempts, the same problem has not been fixed • After two unsuccessful attempts at fixing a problem that could cause death or serious bodily injury • The vehicle has been in the shop for more than 30 days (not necessarily in a row) for repair of any problems covered by warranty If a vehicle is a “lemon” it is required that that information is disclosed, so beware of fraudulent sales. Prior to resale, the vehicle is registered in the manufacturer’s name. You will know the vehicle is a “lemon” if there is a decal affixed to the: left door frame, or • • frame of the major entry into the vehicle such as the front right door frame of a motorhome, or • left side of a vehicle without doors, such as a motorcycle You can also find out by looking at the vehicle’s Certificate of Title and Registration Certificate to see if it says “Lemon Law Buyback” or ask the dealer/seller; they are required by law to disclose this information. If you decide to purchase a “lemon,” under California’s Lemon Law, a new vehicle which is leased or sold with a manufacturer’s written warranty may be returned to the manufacturer for a refund or a replacement if it cannot be repaired. Whether it’s hunting down your old dealership or remedying the purchase of a defective car, the DMV is a great resource to help resolve your problem. The DMV aims to provide the public with useful information that will assist in making vehicle transactions easier. For information on dealers out of business, contact the DMV’s Occupational Licensing Unit, atwww.DMV.ca.gov/vehindustry/ol/dealer.htm or call (916) 229-3126. For more information on Lemon Laws, please visit http://www.dca.ca.gov/acp/pdf_files/englemn.pdf. 22 www.pickupslimited.com 23

Bigfoot Speaks...
by Rudy Weber
Don’t Miss Our Annual Safety check and B.B.Q. lunch on March 10th at 8:00am. The location is same as last year, Glenn’s Brake & Alignment 2135 Canyon Dr. Costa Mesa. Glenn goes out of his way to make us feel at home. You may look at your truck every week, while others may look at their ride once a year but no matter how often you check things over, there are a lot of things you over look or just get use to seeing... YOU NEED US AND THIS INSPECTION! Your truck will look and feel a lot better after a good inspection by an inspector with soft hands and a sharp eye like Chris and Larry. Big Foot Rudy Weber rudolphweber@yahoo.com Ps. I want to thank Abe, my son Tom and Chris who helped me install my new motor. Chris worked two more days with my E-Z wiring as he tore out and labled all my old wires that had fused themselves together after an unplanned short... what a rats nest. He also helped start and brake in my new motor. Come by and check out our work.
An old saying goes, “There’s always time to do it right the second time around”. Rudy is not one of those guys that believes in the old sayings. For some people that goes for the wireing harness on your vehicle, which is a foolish way to think. Rudy was real lucky that his problems came about while his hood was off, seat already out, and the truck was parked in the garage. Just a moment longer and the burning wires would have taken his ride to the junkyard. It didn’t take much for me to convince him that even though it was New Year’s Eve, we needed to replace everything. A fast trip to Reid’s Hot Rod Parts in Orange produced an E-Z Wireing Kit and off to the races we went. I drove, Rudy did most of the work... after reading the instructions that is. What’s Going On Around you...
you won’t know if you don’t get in your truck and drive! Adams Avenue Donuts (The Donut Shop) is a constant source of entertainment. Everybody always says that you never know what you will see and that’s for sure. In a recent visit in mid February some guy brought in his restored fishing boat pulled by a restored Jeep, there was a great looking Airstream trailer pulled by a retro E-150 Ford Van from a company called Quilter that makes high tech amplifiers, and yes the golf cart is selling Girl Scout Cookies!
THAT CANGRO GUY REALLY GETS INTO HIS TRUCK! Dan’s truck is coming along just a few months behind schedule but remember that nice takes time and the devil is in the detail. We all look forward to seeing this ride back on the road soon. Rich says it’s time for a new navigator anyway!
LOOK MA... NO BONDO! In what became a much larger project than we thought it would, the guys at Chopit Kustoms created what is really a masterpiece of metalwork on the top of my truck in replacing all of the rust areas in this phase 1 of the who know how many. The filler on the top (where it exists) is less than 1/32” thick and there is none in the gas fill patch. NICE WORK!

Meeting Highlights
With a GVW of someplace between 8,000 and 9,000 pounds, Mike and Renée’s F-350 fresh off a Utah farm was s sight to behold. Everything remains just the way Mike found it with just basic tune up and safety work performed. Check out those turn indicators andstop lights on top of the fenders! The rear end is something out fo the Twighlight Zone being a two speed style and the extra long 9’ bed seems just right for hayling big stuff. After close inspection of the body work by Dusty, he proclaimed the truck “DONE” and ready for the road. The truck is just part of their 30+ vehicle collection.

NHRA DRAG RACING...
Sights and Sounds of the Winter Nationals The nice thing about going on a Friday is that the seating is wide open. A general admission ticket puts you as close to the starting line as you want to get.
Bob Bodie and his wife Alice are always a big hit with the crowd. Although it is hard for a one car team to compete in the NHRA today, nobody can compete with Bob and Alice when she guids him after his burnout! Tube Steak anybody? From Hot Dogs, to burgers, to Smoked Turkey Legs anf Tri-Tip there was almost any type of “Carnival Food” you could imagine.
Super Tour 10 The Final Chapter Yellowstone National Park Yes you read this right this is the Final Chapter for the Super Tour. After almost 35 years of helping put on shows we quit. It has been one of our favorite things to do with all of our new and old friends. But as with all good things sometimes they must come to an end! This year we travel to Yellowstone National Park. This should turn out to be one of the best Super Tour’s yet... even though a couple of them being a whole lot of fun! So come on and go! We leave for our stay at Mack’s Inn Resort in Island Park, Idaho. Everybody can have their own cabin or a Hotel room. They even have a nice Motor Home park right in the same area as the cabins and Hotel. Phone number foe Mack’s is (888) 558-7272. We will stay here the whole week so no moving from place to place. Everyone seemed to like that when we were able to do it. Also for those you are going to leave Utah with us on the 13th, I have made reservations at the Comfort Inn in for you. Phone number for the Comfort Inn in Richfield Utah is (435) 893-0119. Just tell them you’re with the Super Tour Group at both places.
