24th Annual Seal Beach Car Show...

I have been going to Seal Beach for one thing or another for my entire life. When we were kids I remember the pancake breakfast on the beach and fishing for those little Perch that we called #11’s because of the design in their scales. But what I always remembered about Seal Beach were the cars. This was way before car shows were in the area, but there was always something cool or exotic to see on Main St. Things haven’t changed much in 50+ years. People still eat breakfast and fish for those same Perch on the pier and cars, well I guess that part has changed just a bit... ok maybe a lot. Thanks to Glenn Kerr, the Seal Beach show is always a ton of fun. Glenn arranges for our chapter to park in an exclusive parking area which places us right in the middle of all the action. With almost 500 cars and trucks, it’s really nice to have a rest spot near the half way point on Main Street that we can call home. Several of us were judges for this show as a way to say thanks to the local Chamber for our parking. In all 19 member trucks attended making this one of the best & largest shows of the year. President’s Page... Sorry 351 Cleveland lovers

As most of you know, I work at Total Cost Involved Engineering, a 37 year old company made famous by its fabrication of aftermarket chassis for Model-A through 1940 Ford cars and Ford and Chevy truck chassis of the fifties. Most recently the company has added suspension kits for Camaros, Novas, Firebirds, Falcons and Mustangs. And here comes the fly–in-the-ointment. Back in 1970 Ford Motor Company opted to have two 351 cubic inch displacement engines, the Windsor and the Cleveland. The 351 W is based on the blocks and head design of the 289-302 series while the Cleveland (known as part of the 335 Series of motors) cosmetically resembles Ford big block engines but with a small displacement. By the way, the Cleveland series of 351 CID engines were produced in a sprawling facility in the Cleveland, Ohio suburb while the Windsor was produced in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Thus the names! Some 47 million of these engines were produced being installed into 1970-73 Mustang, Torino, LTD, Mercury and 1970-74 Ford trucks! So it was no surprise when a customer dropped by this past week who happens to own a 1973 Ford pickup powered by the notorious 351 Cleveland engine. I did a knee jerk because every Ford Mustang owner who opts for a TCI front suspension kit cringes when I have to inform them of the complications associated with retaining or installing a Cleveland engine. TCI uses a very strong, lower front crossmember to tie the front frame rails together, which also eliminates the tall shock towers and upper supports. This necessitates the use of a rear sump oil pan, which is really no problem for the 289-302 or 351W, but the Cleveland is a whole new experience. The 335 Ford Engine series features a bottom mounted oil pump which is positioned some 4-inches back from the harmonic balancer which means the addition of an aftermarket frame crossmember will interfere with the pump’s location. Either you raise the engine enough to clear the crossmember (which is impossible on a Mustang) or you install an aftermarket rear sump oil pan along with an external oil pump being belt driven by the engine pulleys. This a major expense to retain this engine and a gamble the driver will catch the warning signs should the external pump or belt ever fail. Since the Cleveland is not as popular at the 289-302 and 351W engine series, performance products are more costly, such as headers, intakes, cams, etc. Combine this with the expense and complications of having to install an external oil pump, lines, fittings and a rear sump oil pan, in short, the Cleveland engine is not your best engine choice for your truck project; especially if you are considering the installation of an aftermarket Mustang II front suspension kit. TCI is going to test the installation of a Cleveland engine into a truck fit with a coil-over, independent front suspension kit as this would create about three more inches of clearance, but this comes at an additional cost as that crossmember is priced considerably higher. Sorry Cleveland engine lovers, but just wanted to give you a heads up before you have to spend a bunch of money trying to fit this big block motor with small cubic inches into your custom truck project. Western Nationals Update... Don’t Miss the The Friday Cruise By Chris Travers
When I promise to create a cruise for you guys, I’m going to do my best to make it a good one. I think the 2012 F-100 Western Nationals Friday Cruise is going to be something really special that everybody will want to be a part of. We are getting back to basics with just a little twist that should have something for everybody... a Museum, picnic, and cruise night. Our day will begin as always at our Host Hotel, the Ayers Suites in Yorba Linda. A brief drivers meeting will begin at 9:00 am and route slips will be handed out to everybody. Then off we go with our first destination being the Wally Parks NHRA Museum at the Fiarplex in Pomona. I have arranged with the NHRA for a special group entry fee of $5.00 per person which will be payable at the door. Our route to the museum will be through beautiful Carbon Canyon. I have arranged for some extra staff to be at a local Subway where we can pickup our sandwiches or snacks before our tour. There is a beautiful park just a short distance from the Fiarplex where we will eat. Drinks will be provided by Pickups Limited of Orange County. After lunch and our standard B.S. session, we will mount up again for our second destination which will be Ruby’s Diner in Whittier to be guests for their huge Friday Night Cruise. This was the reason that I mentioned “snacks” along with sandwiches above. With Ruby’s being famous for burgers and shakes, some of you guys might want to “save yourselves! Our route to Ruby’s will take us through the Puente & Whittier Hills ending right on Whittier Blvd. which is where Ruby’s is located. For those that are not interested in the cruise night, I will have route slips to return to the Ayers from the NHRA and those of you that can’t make the NHRA, I will have maps to take you to Ruby’s. All bases are covered so there is no excuse for not being there!

Annual Chapter Safety Check...

What a great day at Glenn’s Alignment & Brake service, our host Glenn Kerr and his right hand man Joe Smith out did themselves again this year. We had Eight Big Winners at our yearly truck Inspections this year and no losers. I note a Winner as having a problem or problems with his ride that our many inspectors found. This makes all of our trucks safer to ride when fixed. We inspected 18 trucks in all. Some of the problems we found were: • Front brake lines pinched when turning hard right or left • Adjust hand/emergency brake • Bad rear axle seals • Rear brake shoes cracked or worn • Sway bar rubber/urethane bushings needed replacing • Bad cab mounts • Loose or worn power steering rack • Bad front end bushings - especially on the Volare front ends • Loose steering shaft • Steering shaft rubbing against the motor mount • Screw in rear tire A lot of our Wives attended, some after checking out the neighborhood yard sales first though. Everyone jumped in to help anyway they could, from inspecting the trucks to setting up the great lunch of Wahoo Fish Tacos with all the trimmings. St. Patrick’s Day marked the day for our Open House gathering. Despite the wet weather, 125+ classic cars and trucks showed up early at CPP. Several local clubs organized cruises to our event including: SoCal Novas, led by RK Smith; Pickups Limited, led by Chris Travers; and the C-10 Club, led by John Oro. Even on a grey day, it was an awesome site to see these beauties roll up to CPP.

We did not disappoint with our jam-packed goody bag, weighing in at a hefty 8 lbs., thanks to our generous sponsors. Several shop tours took place throughout the day, giving participants an in-depth look inside our manufacturing, build and shipping departments, and a chance to get out of the rain for a bit!
Polly’s Pies kept everyone warm with their hot coffee, cider, cookies and cinnamon rolls in the morning and In-N-Out Burger arrived at lunchtime to serve up some delicious hamburgers courtesy of CPP. The much-anticipated raffle began after lunch, with thousands of dollars of raffle prizes given away. Even the intermittent gusts of rain and wind could not dampen the crowd’s spirits as they grasped their raffle tickets, hoping to hear their number being called out. At the end of the day, two very lucky winners walked away with the grand prizes; Total Cost Involved’s 4-Link Rear Suspension Kit (value $975) and Scott’s Hot Rod’s Complete Mustang II IFS System valued at $3000. NHRA Twilight Cruise ... by Chris Travers The Wally Parks NHRA Museum in Pomona is the Holy Grail of Hot Rodding. The true roots of our hobby are presented for everybody to see and learn from here in Pomona just a stone’s throw away from the drag strip where Hot Rods went to the big time with the Winter Nationals. This popular SoCal gathering of street rod, hot rod and muscle cars is held the first Wednesday of every month from April to December in the NHRA Museum parking lot at Fairplex in Pomona. Hundreds of vehicle and thousands of people come for music, prizes, food, beer and lots more. Pickups Limited started out the year right with 12 trucks making a grand entrance into the parking lot where we enjoyed some preferred parking thanks to the NHRA crew and their volunteers. Admission to the Museum was free for the evening so we all went inside to check out the newest exhibit, Moon: Six Decades of a Hot Rodding Eye-con. Praised by the New York Times and Hot Rod Deluxe Magazine, the Moon exhibit gives a pictorial view of Dean Moon and the automotive company’s rise to iconic status. There’s also an area dedicated to Dean’s personal photographs. The legendary Moon cars including the rarely-seen Moon rickshaw were on display. Coming next month, the Neon and the American Road Exhibit with live “how neon works” demonstrations presented by exhibit partner, the Museum of Neon Art. The Neon exhibit will be on hand when we return in June as this is one of our destinations for the 30th annual F-100 Western Nationals cruise.

Editor’s Ramblings...
Making Good Decisions... by Chris Travers
Each and every day we make millions of decisions, hopefully most of them correct! You can even purchase a new vehicle that makes many decisions automatically. Just the other night I saw a commercial from Mercedes that promoted a car that could sense that you were falling asleep at the wheel. That’s amazing given the fact that I don’t know if I’m falling asleep or not most of the time... my wife lets me know about that one. Often while contemplating world piece, I amuse myself with human nature and the entertainment value we receive on a daily basis from it. How many times have you caught yourself pondering, “what was that guy thinking about when he...” You know what I mean. Us car guys are no different than anybody else. We often create a look or even just a small part so that we can make the other guy think about how we made it or what the purpose is for that part. We can only dream of owning our very own Turbo-Encabu lator. The very thought of using a Turbo-Encabulator to automatically synchronize my Cardinal Grammeters sends chills up my spine.
It is this very type of thinking that we use to make clear and precise decisions about our trucks. Only a truck guy would move a 340 ton rock for no valid reason (expect for the fact that he could) while spending a crap load of money in the process.
It was clear, unbiased thinking that lead to the decision to create the now famous “lefty-righty” urinals of the greater Osh Kosh Valley... no further explination was given for these items but nobody can argue their usefulness!

Then our topic turns to paint and body work. If you hold a lot of shares in Budwiser, there is no question that the Jeep shown here is a must have item. I’m not too sure of the practicality but if the CRV holds solid, the value may actually climb! Another example of customizing gone wrong is the primer black whatsit that appeared in Anaheim the other day... now that was a bad decision gone worse if you ask me.

What’s Mike Hay up to now???

It’s no wonder that Mike Hay doesn’t have his F-100 on the road yet. It seems that he can’t make up his mind which project to work on. If he is not playing with his F-100 project, he is trying to perfect his Corvette upgrade or is concentrating on his Nash upgrade to a small block (late model) 5.0 Ford! All while tooling around town in his Smart Car. What a guy... what a car nut! Mike recently took me over to his “project center” in Costa Mesa where and his buddy Jerri creates these masterpieces. The Nash is currently front and center in the workshop. The framework is really a masterpiece with all boxing and support plates that were added being drilled/welded inside the edges, as spot-welds. Jerri cut and reformed any stock steel to make it look better than factory. The upper arm bolts were replaced with new, hardened/nylock hardware and inserted 'backwards' (head-in) for more room as clearance in the engine compartment is really tight.. It turns out that the steering box and shaft interfered with the left exhaust and oil filter with both sides being too tight for any available exhaust manifolds/ headers, despite the trimming and rearranging of the stock suspension parts to eliminate 1-1.5" from each side. They tried this small detour in an effort stay with stock suspension, but ended up cutting the front suspension off at the unibody, boxing the 'frame', then fitting a Mustang II, and motor mounts. Mike just acquired a completely refurbished GM-style steering column but it needed modifications too. The steering portion was okay, but the manual Nash shift lever was not easily adapted to the AOD transmission. Jerri will move the firewall hole, then make the header-back dual exhaust system. He'll tack it together, then Mike can hone his TIG welding skills to finish it out! The custom driveshaft will slide in as the engine/AOD is installed; right after the tacked-in front suspension is final welded, wheel wells redone and engine compartment is prepped and painted.

Tuesday April 3rd by Chris Travers Over 200 car enthusiasts joined The Old Car Breakfast group at Applebee’s Restaurant in Fountain Valley on Tuesday April 3rd to enjoy a good breakfast followed by a great tour of the Nobels Family Museum also in Fountain Valley. The Old Car Breakfast group is invited each year to the O.C. by Pete Haak who promotes all kinds of good things in Fountain Valley being the promoter/organizer at Fountain Valley Classic Car & Truck show.
The parking lot at Applebee’s had some very interesting automobiles - from an antique fire engine to a vintage sprint car.....After breakfast, the PUL group which included Rich & Randi Miller, Dan & Cathy Cangro. Dusty Peetoom and Chris Travers took a short 3-mile cruise to the home of Nobels Medical Technology which is the home of the Nobels Family Automobile Museum.

President & CEO Dr. Tony Nobles took time out of his busy day to give us a tour of his collection which included over 30 Ferrari’s of all sizes and shapes including the car that Michael Schumacher won his 2004 world championship in. Is seems that Ferrari will sell you one of their Dr. Nobels is an actual brain surgeon, inventor and entrepreneur who owns 17 worldwide patents for products used in connection with cardiovascular and vascular procedures. Judging by the quality of his cars, it looks like he enjoys his hobby to the fullest. Besides cars, he turned his Fountain Valley neighborhood into a life sized Star Wars tribute for Halloween last year in a similar fashion to what he does every year. Brain surgeons can be regular guys too!

Distracted Driving Means Dangerous Driving We have all experienced that terrifying –”oh-no-they’re-going-to-hit-me” – moment, when we see another driver swerving dangerously in front of or alongside our own vehicle. Often times when we look over at the other driver and see them chatting away, we think to ourselves “oh, of course, they’re on the phone!” We are a world of multitaskers and while many of us also engage in the same distracted driving behavior, we often don’t consider ourselves as a risk to others in a similar situation. The reality is, once our attention is diverted from driving, even for a split second, the likelihood of causing a car crash increases tremendously. According to studies done by Virginia Tech and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number one source of driver inattention is the use of a wireless device. While it’s no surprise that these advanced technological devices are widespread, the potential outcome of people using these devices while driving is cause for concern. Driving while using a cell phone, whether hand-held or wireless, reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent (Carnegie Mellon), and delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of 0.08 percent (University of Utah). This decreased reaction time means that you are four times more likely to get into a car crash (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and cause injury to yourself or someone else. In California in 2011, the Department of Motor Vehicles reported that there were 460,487 handheld cell phone convictions – up 22 percent from 361,260 convictions in 2010 and 52 percent from 301,833 in 2009. The cost of a ticket for a first offense is a minimum of $159, and $279 for subsequent offenses. While those costs may seem high, it’s really nothing when you consider that the offender could have easily hurt or killed someone through their inability to pay full attention to the road ahead. Although wireless devices are the leading sources of distracted driving, anything that takes your focus away from driving can be incredibly dangerous and may just as easily lead to a wreck. Grooming, putting on makeup, eating or drinking, and adjusting music players are just a few common behaviors that cause drivers to be inattentive and more susceptible to crashes. While many of us find these habits to be routine and convenient while driving from one place to the next, when we stop and consider that the outcome may be injury or death, we need to realize that they are never worth the risk or even the potential cost of a traffic violation. In an effort to bring awareness to the dangers of distracted driving, the California Office of Traffic Safety recently launched its annual campaign in April, as a part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The campaign’s goal is to stress the importance of staying focused while driving and minimizing all distractions. Drivers should be aware that crashes happen in the blink of an eye and any time spent focusing on something other than the road could lead to a crash or a traffic violation. Make it a point to set aside your distractions, and encourage those you know to do the same. Having a trip result in a car crash due to daily, yet avoidable, distractions is never an actual belief for most of us, but it is a likely result. Stop by Beer Store and buy a case of beer, (debit $24), drive home. 3. Open a beer and drink it. 4. Jack truck up. Spend 30 minutes looking for jack stands. 5. Find jack stands under kid’s pedal car. 6. In frustration, open another beer and drink it. 7. Place drain pan under engine. 8. Look for 9/16 box end wrench. 9. Give up and use crescent wrench. 10. Unscrew drain plug. 11. Drop drain plug in pan of hot oil: splash hot oil on you in process. Cuss. 12. Crawl out from under truck to wipe hot oil off of face and arms. Throw kitty litter on spilled oil. 13. Have another beer while watching oil drain. 14. Spend 30 minutes looking for oil filter wrench. 15. Give up; crawl under truck and hammer a screwdriver through oil filter and twist off. 16. Crawl out from under truck with dripping oil filter splashing oil everywhere from holes. Cleverly hide old oil filter among trash in trash can to avoid environmental penalties. Drink a beer. 17. Install new oil filter, making sure to apply a thin coat of oil to gasket surface. 18. Dump first quart of fresh oil into engine. 19. Remember drain plug from step 11? 20. Hurry to find drain plug in drain pan. 21. Drink beer. 22. Discover that first quart of fresh oil is now on the floor. Throw kitty litter on oil spill. 23. Get drain plug back in with only a minor spill. Drink beer. 24. Crawl under truck, getting kitty litter into eyes. Wipe eyes with oily rag used to clean drain plug. Slip with stupid crescent wrench tightening drain plug and bang knuckles on frame, removing any excess skin between knuckles and frame. 25. Begin cussing fit. 26. Throw stupid crescent wrench. 27. Cuss for additional 5 minutes because wrench hit truck and left dent. 28. Beer. 29. Clean up hands and bandage as required to stop blood flow. 30. Beer. 31. Dump in five fresh quarts of oil. 32. Beer. 33. Lower truck from jack stands. 34. Move truck back to apply more kitty litter to fresh oil spilled during any missed steps. 35. Beer. 36. Test drive truck. 37. Get pulled over: arrested for driving under the influence. 38. Truck gets impounded. 39. Call loving wife; make bail. 40. 12 hours later, get truck from impound yard.

Give Me A Brake... by Glenn Kerr Are You Under Pressured Tire Pressure Tips Tire pressure is a measure of the amount of air in a vehicle’s tires, in pounds per square inch. The required service involves checking the tires’ pressure with a pressure gauge, at least monthly, if not more frequently. Should I Check Pressure Regularly? Yes. Absolutely. Why Do I Have To Do This? Having the proper tire pressure is a crucial safety issue. Next to the brakes, the tires are the most important safety devices on your car. Incorrect tire pressure will compromise cornering, braking and stability. And in the worst-case scenario, improper tire pressure can lead to tire failure and a serious accident. Incorrect tire pressure also will affect your comfort, fuel economy and tire life. What Happens If I Don’t Do This? If tire pressure is too high, then less of the tire touches the ground. As a consequence, your car will bounce around on the road. And when your tires are bouncing instead of firmly planted on the road, traction suffers and so do your stopping distances. You’ll also feel a decrease in ride comfort. (Hint: If you notice that every tie you own has coffee on it, check your tire pressure. It may be too high.) If tire pressure is too low, then too much of the tire’s surface area touches the ground, which increases friction between the road and the tire. As a result, not only will your tires wear prematurely, but they also could overheat. Overheating can lead to tread separation — and a nasty accident. One sign of low tire pressure is if your tires squeal when cornering. And you need to check your tire pressure even if your tires aren’t leaking. Why? Because tire pressure also changes with the temperature outside. Tire pressure decreases by about 1 pound per square inch for every 10-degree drop in outside air temperature. So if you last had your tire pressure checked in July, when it was 80 degrees outside, and it’s now January — and the temperature is minus 20 — your tires may be under inflated by 10 pounds, which is dangerous. 24 www.pickupslimited.com 25

How Do You Determine The Correct Tire Pressure For Your Car’s Tires? Most vehicles list tire pressure requirements on one of the door posts, most often the driver’s. If the specs aren’t on any door post, check inside the glove compartment, under the center console cover or in the owner’s manual. A lot of people check the pressure listed on the tires themselves, but that’s actually the wrong place to look. The number on the tire is the maximum allowable air pressure — not the recommended pressure for that tire when used on your vehicle. You should check it when the tire is cold. You can check tire pressure any time of the day, as long as the tires have been sitting for a few hours. Finally, check the spare tire at least once in a while. TPMS No, it’s not some new kind of ailment women get. New cars and light truck from 2007 on sold in the US are required to Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems. These are electronic tire pressure monitoring systems which will alert drivers via a warning light on instrument panel. For the most part they work pretty well. The do, however require extra care when mounting tires and on some vehicles require calibration when rotating tires. As always, if you have any questions, please free to call me. And as always, if I don’t know the answer or can’t find one, I’ll make one up that sounds plausible.

Having been around cars and car guys most of my life, I often get questions asked that begin with “Hey, do you know anybody that can do this or that on my car?” Making a recommendation of a mechanic or body & paint guy usually makes me about as nervous as suggesting a good restaurant... sometimes it’s a no win situation. Often times we trap ourselves in wanting to do it “on the cheap” which rarely works out. Remember, good isn’t cheap and cheap usually isn’t good! If you are on a tight budget there are plenty of sources for tools, books and how-to classes which will allow you to not only save money but to learn a skill at the same time. Gary "Chopit" Fioto is a self-taught metal artist who has been perfecting his technique since the tender age of 12. Fashion by Norm.... an update on Chapter clothing At the recent April Chapter meeting, Norm Marshall became a fashion model for his new club jacket and shirt. Norm ordered these items (plus a new hat) from our new vendor Embroidme in Costa Mesa. Embroidme is a nation wide company with full-service showrooms that combine a wide variety of apparel and promotional items. You might be able to find a location that is more convenient to where you live, but there will always be less confusion if we can deal with the same store which for now will be the Costa Mesa store. The important thing to keep in mind is that the logo and artwork is the property of the Orange County Chapter and is not to be used by anybody else without written permission of our chapter. It is not to be used by any other chapter. With that being said, you are able to custom order colors to match with your truck or just to compliment the shirt or jacket you like (F.Y.I., the “Official” color that our Chapter uses for our logo is PMS Warm Red like you see on our business cards). The other logos give you an idea of what can be done. You can check with Norm or Embroiderme for the jacket style which was quite close to our previous Harrington style M770 that was no longer available. Norm’s shirt was a Dickies in a Khaki color. Remember that there are genuine Dickies products and there are lots of knock-offs out there so be sure to try on whatever you buy first to be sure that you are happy with it if you plan on providing the shirt to be embroidered. You can also order shirts or jackets in a number of other styles and colors, so you might want to check out what the shop can offer to you. A price has been set for front and back side embroidery but those costs will be a bit lower if a quantity of 8 or more garments is produced at the same time. Larry & Lucky’s Project

These wheels look familar to me...
A little history on the vehicle, l purchased it from a co-worker back in 2005 who had it for about a year and a half. My son Lucky and I tried to drive it home but after one off ramp of driving, we determined it wouldn’t be safe to drive any further. l remember the first time I pressed on the brake, it locked up one of the front wheels so we ended up trailering it to my mom’s house. One of the first things we did was brakes, l replaced some wheels cylinders and brake shoes. Now lets jump ahead seven years, Lucky is now a junior in high school, getting ready to drive so I gave him a choice of driving the ‘66 F100 or the Falcon... it didn’t take him long to decide which vehicle he was driving. I wanted to make the vehicle reliable so we started with rebuilding the engine and transmission. We ended up getting a newer block which we sent out to L & R automotive supply were they did all the machine work on block and head. It took me and lucky a couple of weeks to assembled the engine but it was a good learning experience for Lucky. While waiting for the machine work to be done, I rebuild a C-4 transmission from a ‘65 Mustang, originally it has a 2 speed auto transmission. Once we had the engine and transmission completed, we moved on to the rear end. We installed a rear end out of a Granada, it fit perfect. We also plumbed in a master cylinder out of a manual disc brake Falcon. I knew we would be upgrading the front drum brakes to disc, this also opened the door to 5 lug wheels which came from Chris Travers when he was changing over to the C-4 Corvette rear end. We ended up going with one of ABS brakes conversion kits. We still need to do some interior work and eventually we will repaint it but with all that we have done. This has been a good father & son project and we are both happy with the results so far. Hauln’ Freight • May - June 2012
Super Tour 10 The Final Chapter Yellowstone National Park Yes you read this right this is the Final Chapter for the Super Tour. After almost 35 years of helping put on shows we quit. It has been one of our favorite things to do with all of our new and old friends. But as with all good things sometimes they must come to an end! This year we travel to Yellowstone National Park. This should turn out to be one of the best Super Tour’s yet... even though a couple of them being a whole lot of fun! So come on and go! We leave for our stay at Mack’s Inn Resort in Island Park, Idaho. Everybody can have their own cabin or a Hotel room.
