Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your Engines! Welcome back to beautiful Orange County and the 26th F-100 Western Nationals! This year Pickups Limited is celebrating 40 years since that ad was placed in a local classified newspaper called the PennySaver. The club was on its way to make history as being the oldest F-100 truck club in the USA and possibly the WORLD! Over the years the one thing that you can count on is change and PUL has had its share over the past 40 years. When I joined in the Orange County Chapter in February 2005, there were 8 members and now we are 40+ strong and growing. The most recent historic change to our constitution which now allows each chapter to vote on the inclusion of years ranging from 1948 to 1966. this means that both F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels are now accepted into the club. I’m sure that along with membership increasing, the dynamics of the club will change even more. But the one thing that will ring true is the love of the hobby and friends you make along the way. Part of the change in the club history has been the F-100 Western Nationals. From venue site to host chapter, the one thing that stayed true is to have a good time and talk trucks! Last year the bar was raised at the 25th anniversary show. We had 177 registrations with a pre-show event “Jeff’s Beach Cruise” on Friday. It was a good time for all. If this is your first time to the show you are in for a treat. From a new vendors row to some awesome trucks you might not have seen before, we are looking good. We are very excited to have Mr. Pat Ford back this year a long with THE major vendors of the industry, their ads are in this program so check them out!

Please be sure you read the article in this program about the Beverly’s. It’s a perfect example how this club helped families build strong father and son relationships and that relationship is still going strong! It’s going to be a hot day in more ways then one so make sure you have plenty of water to keep cool and batteries for the camera to take some hot pictures of some awesome trucks!

For anyone who has been in my position you know it takes time and commitment to put on a show of any kind and I would like to thank my fellow chapter members who worked so hard before and during this show. Also, I must give a very special thank you to Steve Stillwell and Chris Travers the heart and soul of the F-100 Western Nationals. AWARDS Rich Miller

I’m glad you made it to the big one by Jeff Hornsby - President, Pickups Limited of Orange County On behalf of the members of the Orange County Chapter of PICKUPS LIMITED, I want to welcome you to the 26th annual F-100 Western Nationals. Last year we made additions to the show. We wanted to make it more than just a truck show since it is the largest gathering of Ford Trucks on the West Coast. We gave you the Cruise to the Beach, a Tour of John Force’s Race Station, and Margaritas before dinner and plenty of vendors on the day of the show. The response from that show has made us work even harder for you this year. Last year was a celebration of the 25th year of this event and this year the show is a birthday party to commemorate 40 years of Pickups Limited. It is hard to believe that forty years ago an ad was placed in a local throw away newspaper called The PenneySaver and from a handful of truck lovers in a garage, we have 7 chapters and members throughout out the United States and in Australia. Our membership has been up and down in the past forty years but in lean times there were always leaders who stepped forward for the good of the club to keep things going. Our hats are off to all of you. To say thank you for keeping the flame burning does not seem enough but look around today. Who would ever have thought 40 years ago that it would come to this. We started an annual Spirit award last year. This award will be presented each year by Pickups Limited of Orange County to the person at the show that best depicts the fellowship of our sport. You know the type of person I am talking about. Someone that is special for the things they do and the people that they are; someone that gives themselves unconditionally to help others and to promote Ford F-Series trucks. Last year we had the honor to give this award to Bob Baxter of the San Diego chapter for being the kind of person we all want to be. Who will it be this year? Be sure to stick around for the awards ceremony and see for yourself. Along with the members of Pickups Limited of Orange County, I am looking forward to spending time with old friends and meeting new ones. So if you see someone you don’t know today, introduce yourself and talk about trucks…and be sure to get some birthday cake! ENJOY THE PARTY Jeff Hornsby - jeff@pickupslimited.com

What an F-100 Life
by Pat Ford
Last year’s F-100 Western Nationals was a dream of a lifetime come true. After being issued a warning from long time friends Bill Lee, and Steve Stillwell that it was the West Coast “don’t miss” event I was finally able to attend. Having the pleasure of doing part of the vendor PA work and stopping mid-way for the surprise of my life by being given a charter membership and inducted into Pickups Limited Gang (Oldest F-100 Club in America I might add) just can’t be topped. I dearly remember back in the 70’s seeing an article on F-100’s that featured a half moon circle of trucks with this owner and member standing next to his truck hoping some day I could fly or drive out and meet this group of truckers. In the meantime another F-100 movement was taking off like wildfire here on the east coast; an event that me and my family and many F100 friends like to call the F-100 Super Nationals. At the end of the vendor introduction, Steve, knowing I had some pelons from the ‘07 SuperNats, asked if I would share center stage with one of the icons of the F-100 world. I was thrilled to autograph them along with The King, Jack Ries who founded So Cal Pickups and Panels and is credited with bringing the F-100 movement from the back streets to Main Street America with his flashy way of promoting his business. To Pat Ford it didn’t get any better than this. As you know by now this was my 30 th and final year of promoting my baby the F-100 SuperNationals. I think back to that very first event at Chimney Rock when I was the trucker with 3 trucks entered in the show, the only vendor, and being the promoter for something I had no working knowledge of. I guess we got it right because of what it has become today; the world’s largest classic truck event. From all over the world people now exchange Christmas cards and go on vacation together because they formed friendships at the SuperNats. With 30 years, (3 decades amounting to half of our lives (Jan and I both turned 60 years of age this year and need to take a break.) The event takes 6 to 8 months to put together with only Jan, Squire and myself making it happen. Our lives have been this event so Jan and I will continue to have a strong presence at the show itself and will never totally walk away from our beloved F-100 family. Part of my decision was the timing of an opportunity of a lifetime which has come along at the right time of my career. Long time dear friend Dennis Carpenter and I put together a program in which I am to go across America promoting and spreading the gospel of Dennis Carpenter Ford Reproduction Parts. I keep pinching myself every day to make sure it’s for real. I think it’s a perfect match for Dennis and me. I am extremely glad to be able to attend this year’s show and look forward to talking with you personally. What an F-100 Life! Thanks for coming along for the ride. Sincerely, Pat Ford f100supernationals@yahoo.com

Editors Ramblings...
by Chris Travers
40 years of Pickups Limited? I can only imagine how much fun it was back in the beginning when Hot Rodding was getting strong here in Southern California. Some things change but the constant that exists is that this type of hobby brings out the creative best in all of us. Some might call us dreamers but I like the word “CREATIVE” better. Maybe you don’t turn a wrench yourself but are you always thinking about a new paint color or that No Limit 4-link upgrade? Maybe it’s 5 quarts of Torco with a Pure Power oil filter, or you want to rip into the chassis and do that Flat Out Corvette thing! Are you beginning to get the picture. I have a set of Horkey’s boards in my garage just waiting for a finish to be applied and began to think about a new bed from Dan Carpenter, but settled for some stainless Dennis Carpenter tail gate hinges from the Truck Shop So you think I’m getting out of hand? What about you? An upgraded set of Euro Lights from LMC with a wiring harness from Sy at Mid Fifty, or a bunch of shinny bolts from Totally Stainless to hold down those new 3-point seat belts from The Truck Stop, but don’t forget to stop by and see Glenn for an alignment before you take off to Lake Havasu to see Lynette Fisher about that river house you have always wanted to retire to. You know, that’s exactly what I’m going to do just as soon as I bolt on that new set of Colorado Custom Wheels that I just won, but on the way to the River, I need to stop by the John Force Race Station and pickup a collectable for my grandson. Now that I am thinking about it, I might as well just run this thing over to BOBCO and let Bob and Mike have their way with it! That way I can keep my hands clean. You must keep your appearances up after all, YOU ARE DRIVING A F-100! chris@pickupslimited.com

The Beach Cruise by Chris Travers
Did you do Jeff’s Beach Cruise yesterday? If not, you really missed out. This event which takes place on the Friday before the show was something that Jeff Hornsby came up with for those that had traveled from out of town to attend the F-100 Western Nationals. Jeff thought that just because we could go to the beach F-100 style whenever we wanted to, didn’t mean that everybody else could. So why not share? Last year over 20 trucks (some of us had to stay behind and work) made the run to Huntington Beach to check out the Surfer’s Walk of Fame, The Pier, and all of the great stores along Main Street in Surf City USA. The scene of multicolored F-100s rolling down Pacific Coast Highway attracted a ton of attention. Finding themselves at the world famous John Force Race Station wasn’t a bad way to finish the day either. If you missed out, plan on joining us next year. When you come to the F-100 Western Nationals, plan to come early and stay late!

Were you a Trucker 35 years ago? What The club was like back in the day...By Bill Beverley In 1973, I was in the process of keeping my promise to Dale, that if he would go to college I would buy and finance the restoration of a car of his choice. I was thinking a Mercedes 280 SL but he bought a ‘56 small window. It was really a truck that had gotten lost on the way to the junk yard. But the heck with it! What better way to learn about cars than doing a complete rebuild. We worked for awhile by ourselves and then we read about this car club, Pickups Limited in Peterson’s book on Ford vans & trucks. So we went to a meeting at the Anaheim Bowling alley. We couldn’t even get in the door it was so crowded with people and trucks, So 3 years later we went to a meeting a lot earlier and got seats inside and got to meet everyone. They had an interesting program highlighted by a short movie on something related to the trucks. So we went through the required meetings and outings and were voted in as a family. A few months later Dale became a member on his own. The Club was very active. They sponsored a truck show at the LA Convention Center which was well attended and by this time we had Dale’s truck finished and were anxious to show Ole Kentucky Blue off. Now Ole Blue was a basic rebuilt Ford pickup. All original, including an overdrive transmission. But the unique feature of this truck was the Metal Flake paint job (big flakes like on boats). We had sprayed on the metal flakes and then 18 coats of clear Dupont Imron to get the clear finish. To us it was the prettiest thing ever. We didn’t even place; we were newbies and obviously did not understand what it took to show. The club had so much to offer. We had picnics, went to museums and amusement parks, had safety inspections. In general enjoyed one another and our trucks. At most of our outings we played softball and volleyball, all young peoples games but shucks, we were young then; and just like now we sat and talked a lot. It was always impressive to see a 25 to 30 truck convoy going down the road. We sure got lots of high five salutes’. My favorite trips were to Reno, Lake Havasu, North South runs and the Highlight of our Pickup truck experience was the trip to the Eastern Nationals. At every gas stop we had a car show, and when we stopped over in Tucumcari NM. We were staying at a hotel and some local kids kept coming by and looking at the trucks, so I asked them if I could help them and one of them pulled out a cover of an old trucking magazine and wanted to know if the yellow truck was the same as the one on the cover.

So I went and got Don Stark out of bed and got him to show the truck to the boys. Man that made their day. After getting Don’s autograph, we all went to bed. Once in Gatlinburg Tennessee, Pat Ford gave our California group the best spot in the show. He was so appreciative of our efforts to come as a group. (The truck on the left was mine). On the way back to California I lost my power steering so we stopped in Ashland Kentucky, at my sister in laws house and replaced it. Here is a picture of Dale and I after we finished. We even had fun raising money and the one method I got a biggest kick out of was selling fireworks on the 4th of July. It involved everyone for a week manning the booth, but we did ok. We made pretty good money and had lots of fun. We got so carried away with trucks that at one time we had 5 vehicles in various stages of construction one ‘56, two ‘55’s, one ‘56 Panel and a ‘65 IH Travelall, so you can see why Dale had to finally move out, Ha. Dale and I went to lots of classes at Golden West College and together we learned to do everything we needed to restore an old car; body work, mechanical

repair, welding, painting, upholstery, and electronics. It was a great way for Dale and me to become closer. Dale has turned out to be as good an overall mechanic as I have ever known, and I am proud to see him sharing this knowledge with the club. Having been members for over 30 years, we have seen a lot of great people come and go and each has been another star in our lives. It so good to see new life coming back into the club. Keep it going! Pickups forever! Papaw and Glima

2007 Truck of the Year...
by Ron Smith
I’ve loved the 1956 F-100 truck since I was 18 years old and purchased my first one. Since then I have had three more, all with Big Windows. I bought this one in 2005 and it was formerly used for Drag Racing. I’ve had it completely redone from the frame to the interior by Tony’s Auto Body. It took about 10 months to complete this labor of love because there were a lot of modifications. My dedication to this truck was rewarded last year when it was voted “2007 Truck of the Year” here at the F-100 Western Nationals. I would like to give a special thanks to all the guys at Pick-Ups Limited for sponsoring this great event...Ron CHASSIS • Frame - Modified stock • Rear end - Lincoln 9 inch • Rear Suspension - four link • Suspension - attached Koni coil over • Front & Rear brakes - power disc • Front end - Volare • Steering - power rack and pinion • Wheels - Sac Intro 18 x 5 & 20x10 • Tires - Toyo P255-45ZR-18 & P295-40R-20 • Gas Tank - Stainless under bed ENGINE • 350cdi Chevy Built by Larry Walker • Heads modified • Manifold - Rodworks Headers • Exhaust - Flowmaster by Sac, 3 inch • Transmission- Turbo 350 BODY • Custom Cab - Big Window • Modifications – Shaved Door Handles • Fenders - Front stock-rear widened 3½ inches • Hood - No Limit Tilt - Shaved • Grill - Chrome stock • Bed Wood Oak with Stainless Steel • Paint - Porsche Red • Bumpers - Front- Stock, Rear- Roll Pan INTERRIOR • Dash - Stock - Smooth • Gages - VDO • Air conditioning - Vintage air • Steering Wheel - Billet Specialties • Steering column - IDIDIT • Seat - Chevy Silverado • Upholstery - by Extreme - Tan- Mercedes Leather • Carpet- Mercedes Wool -Tan • Audio - Kenwood Audio System

Do You remember Last Year? by Chris Travers
If you were with us last year, the 25th Anniversary F-100 Western Nationals was an event that almost did not happen. Just 5 short weeks before the show, The Gypsum Canyon fire broke out and almost took Canyon RV park off the map. Those of you that are staying in the camp ground today can still see remnants of this blaze on the edges of the campground and just across the river. Had it not been for the fast action of the Anaheim Fire Department and the work of their brave men and women like you see in the photo to the right, we would have been literally on the streets. After the flames were doused, the Anaheim Fire Department sent representatives of their Hazardous Materials Response Team to the F-100 Western Nationals to teach all of us truckers proper ways of disposing of that used oil and those slimy filters. Pickups Limited of Orange County would like to welcome the Anaheim Fire Department Haz Mat representatives again to this years event. They will be offering information on proper disposal of any hazardous material as well as offering free used oil filter and other containers to us as their supplies last. We often hear the words Haz Mat, but what does the term mean and what is it that these people do for us? The Anaheim Fire Department’s Haz Mat Team is designed to provide specialized emergency response of both personnel and equipment to protect the public, the environment and property. This would include incidents involving a release, or potential release of hazardous materials that present a physical, biological, radiological or health hazard to the community. The Anaheim Haz Mat Team is one of four Haz Mat Teams in Orange County that provides 24 hours-a-day staffing for emergency responses. The Anaheim Haz Mat Team’s response area includes the City of Anaheim, as well as all of north Orange County. The Anaheim Haz Mat Team is comprised of 21 members (seven per shift) who are assigned roles as dual-functioning personnel. Team members are stationed at Anaheim’s Riverdale Fire Station and primarily respond as fire fighters on an Engine or Truck Company. When a hazardous materials incident occurs the Haz Mat Team Members respond to the incident on a specially designed Hazardous Materials Response Unit. The Haz Mat Unit is a multi-functioning piece of apparatus, which has specialized equipment, including communications and information gathering electronics, air monitoring devices, unknown-chemical analysis materials, and a full compliment of tools necessary to affect an entry into a hazardous atmosphere. The Haz Mat Unit is also dispatched to incidents, such as fires, as a light tower and air bottle filling station. Specialized equipment and responsibilities require specialized training. Each member of the Haz Mat Team receives an initial 160 hours of classroom and manipulative training. This qualifies them as a California State Certified Haz Mat Technician. The curriculum includes chemistry, air sampling, collecting and analyzing of unknown materials, radioactive materials, and technical knowledge of the hardware necessary to mitigate an emergency. After Certification additional specialized training begins for incidents such as, clandestine drug labs, NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) terrorism incidents, and confined space rescues. The Anaheim Haz Mat Team has responded to a wide range of emergency situations: tanker rollovers, train derailments, hydrogen cyanide, tetraethyl lead, methyl chloride, pesticide releases, drug labs, and illegal dumping just to name a few. The Anaheim Haz Mat has been protecting and serving the community of Anaheim and Orange County for over 15 years. Unfortunatelly brush fires and the handling of Hazardous materials has become a way of life for all of us. As I am writing this story, a brush fire burns in the Mt. Baldy area which is within 50 miles of our show site. The members of the Anaheim Fire Department as well as other agencies wherever you are from are dedicated to protecting us in everyday life. Take a few minutes and say thanks to them for being there for us when we need them. They must all be truckers at heart, after all what can be more cool than a fire truck?

Why Pickups Limited of Orange County? In April 1968 someone placed an advertisement in a throw away paper called the PennySaver. The add solicited owners of 1953-1956 Ford pickup trucks who might be interested in meeting other owners. A few pavement pounders answered the ad and so began Pickups Limited. The Orange County chapter is where it all started and is now the oldest of seven chapters of vintage F-100’s. The original membership went through growing pains and some chewin’ and jawin’ over what year trucks to include and for some crazy reason that didn’t include panel trucks. It seems that some guys just aren’t in favor of full bodied beauties with plump and rounded rear ends. Needless to say the panel had to wait a few years to be appreciated and for entry into the F-100 truck family. The Orange County chapter currently includes 1948 through 1956 pickups including long and flat bed trucks and panels. Wild and crazy may not be the best way to describe our many club activities, nevertheless fun with a capitol ‘F’ is the club motto and I believe that is the primary reason for our membership to be at it’s highest in many a moon. Maybe it’s because we don’t put any demands on the membership or maybe it’s our motley assemblage of gear grinders, having everything from under construction to highly modified and show trucks that makes our club so much fun to be a part of. The current President, Jeff Hornsby is a team builder who has swelled the ranks of the club and assembled an eager group that brought you the 2007 Western Nationals. I don’t know if you attended, but if you did there is no explanation necessary. Simply stated, it was the best all Ford truck show west of the Mississippi. Members like Chris Travers editing publishing a premiere bimonthly news letter, working our WEB site and producing a kick butt show brochure. Steve Stillwell, a well known editor and publisher of several car and truck magazines, stepped up to the plate and came up with none other than Pat Ford to emcee things and along with Chris and others he has produced eye popping raffle and drawing prizes. El Presidente’ saw the need for greater club recognition and with the help of Ed Oe’s net working skills and untold hours behind the scenes, PUL has been recognized with printed articles, web and blog coverage and even TV’s ‘Wipnotic’ (Saturday’s at 3:00 PM). There are others of course, and I only mention the above as an example of our membership, and their drive and dedication to development of the club. So why Pickups Limited of Orange County and where does the rubber meets the road for some truck enthusiasts? Well, some join for the friendship and universal love of trucks. Some enjoy the shop talk and ideas that help resolve problems. Still others join for the help afforded members by club affiliation, and some simply need an outlet for their passion and cruise mentality. YES, there will be a 40th anniversary party to celebrate the 26th annual Western Nationals and YES it will be a great show. Refreshments, music, vendors, good times, tip sharing, and cruising. But think about becoming a part of our PUL family anyway. See you at the next meeting. Dan Cangro 24

Building Tips for F-100’s
by Steve Stillwell
I love the fact that I work in the magazine publishing business because there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t learn something. As a matter of fact, I just learned from Jeff Hornsby that a jumper cable can be effectively substituted for a ground strap. But that’s another story. This past November my employer, Ty Bobit announced the purchase of Hot Rod & Restoration’s magazine and show. HRR’s trade show is held in Indianapolis in February. To make a long story short, Ty caught the street rodding disease. “Steve, I want to build a classic truck which will reflect 1961, the year my father founded Bobit Business Media. If we build a truck, it will be perfect for hauling magazines and our display materials to shows and events.” I knew that Rich Miller had an over abundance of trucks and was thinking of parting with his gold colored 1956 Ford small window. Ty met up with Rich, drove the truck and quickly purchased it. I saw it parked at our shipping dock, looked it over, started it and took it for a brief drive. Ty liked the truck, but told me there was a lot of play in the steering and the ride was a bit on the rough side. Ty added, “Steve, I would like to drive the ’56 to the SEMA Show in Las Vegas…on the Driven Dirty Tour.” My reply was, “Sure, what year?” I called Rob MacGregor of No Limit Engineering and popped the question of how long would it take to install a Mustang II front clip and 9-inch Ford rear end. I don’t know what rear end gear ratio was in that stock housing, but it was really winding that 289 V-8 tight for freeway speeds. Rob wanted the truck in a couple of weeks, so I made the appointment to drive it to San Berdo. The highlight of my drive was stopping roadside to find a stick to use as a cruise control as the gas pedal angle was killing my right ankle. Now, about that learning part; Rob had me take the truck over to No Limit Fabrication, a metal fabrication school where students are taught the fine art of metal fab, all forms of welding, metal math and the art of rod fabrication. The truck was positioned atop large stands and the frame leveled. The bed and front sheet metal were removed, followed by the engine and transmission. I was in the middle of photo documenting the stages of the disassembly of the truck when Rob called me over to check out the passenger side of the frame. Pointing to the frame bracket that supports the passenger side of the cab, Rob told me that there was a serious frame problem because the cab was sitting on the frame, and there was supposed to be a one-inch gap! A closer inspection revealed cracks which initiated at the large hole in the frame just forward of the cab and extending out in several directions. The problem was caused by someone having removed the original transmission member and attaching a cross tube which mounted only to the bottom flange of the frame. This allowed the frame to flex, crack and droop. The cure was to jack up the frame cab mounts while simultaneously heating the frame rails. Rob jacked, pushed, welded the cracks and eventually leveled the frame rails while establishing factory specs. Tubing was then welded to the frame to hold it in place until the Mustang II cross member was permanently installed. If you have removed the original transmission frame member and your hood doesn’t close with a decent gap, better have someone inspect your frame to see if you have developed a similar chassis failure! The moral of this story is to never take what is not easy to see for granted. At the time of this writing, the chassis is finished and headed to paint. Have a great show.
