BOBCO BBQ and PICNIC ... by chris travers Thanks to a great idea from the National Council, the idea of an All Chapter’s get together became reality. The suggestion was made to check with BOBCO to see if he would let us use his place for this picnic/BBQ. It didn’t take Dusty Peetoom too much talking with Bob and Mike to make the event a reality.

The Orange County group gathered at the 401-K Club in Anaheim for our 45 minute drive to Lake Elsinore where BOBCO is located. All chapters were represented along with a few of our favorite non-members like Walt Pocock and of course the BOBCO gang including “T” who recently move into our Chapter neighborhood near Knott’s Berry Farm.

In all there were 40+ trucks on hand with almost 80 people plus a whole bunch of folks that just stopped by for a little bit to see what was going on.

Once we were settled in and food began to cook, it seemed that everybody got comfortable and had a great time visiting. Dusty did all of the legwork to pick up the burgers, buns and other items while the other chapters each brought something to share.

Rich Miller went to the farm and brought in a huge box of onions and tomatoes that Dusty sliced... WOW what a pile of produce! A special thanks to the San Diego Chapter for stepping up to do the lions share of the setup, cooking, and cleaning.

President’s Page... By Steve Stillwell DO YOU WANNA BE ON A TRUCK SHOW?

You may have already been approached to be on a TV show about you, your family and your customized truck. While the thought of national exposure may seem like the ultimate reward for your truck building efforts, you always have to remember that these promotion companies are making money at your expense. I can vouch for that from personal experience as years ago, I was approached to be an extra on ZZTop’s Legs video. No will recognize me with a full beard and the biker style of plaid shirt, but my big scene is when I got to open the ’33 street rod’s door for Daniel to exit just after the car slid to a stop. I had a great time and shared a private lunch with Billy, Dusty and Frank Beard, the only one without a beard. I asked Gibbons for the ZZTop key chain after that segment was filmed. That was my big reward. Ironically, I recently was asked about being part of a new show targeting the fabrication of custom and classic cars and trucks. I thought you would find interest or even humor from the attached portion of the show’s application targeting trucks which I cut and pasted below.

I often think back to my first truck, a 54 F-100 with a two tone paint job with the spare tire on the rear fender. It had the round radio in the dash with fresh air vent controls. I later learned it was a custom cab of that year.

I remember the pride and excitement I felt driving that truck at a young age.

My dad was the second owner and paid $300 for it in ‘68. He drove it to work each day and I remember him pulling into the driveway after work smoking his pipe and listen to the news on the AM radio as he parked his pride and joy. I'd quickly take over, popping the hood to check the oil and clean the straight six from its daily drive.

I got to know that truck from the front horns to the rear bed chains. My Dad would give me the command to change the oil or the brakes shoes. Or give me an assignment to figure out a way to stop the chains from making noise and scraping the tail gate paint.

Those commands got me hooked. I was checking out other trucks for mods and asking lots of questions from truck owners I would meet some at the local gas station or at the store or hamburger stand. I quickly found out that there was a common bond among us truckers and it was all about the truck.

I grew up in the San Gabriel valley and heard of PUL but I was too young and was having too much fun on my own in the garage taking things apart, cleaning them, and putting things back together. From the glass bowl on the fuel pump to the rear leaf spring U bolt. I had the cleanest truck on my block. The local hardware store was my supply place to the things I needed to make my truck shine. I also had an uncle who built hot rods and he would come by now and then to give his advice and I got a lot of questions answered.

I worked one summer in a wrecking yard in El Monte (A Car on Valley) and that was like a candy store to me. That experience gave me even more knowledge on the quick cuts and access to some good stuff.

Good thing I had a truck to haul stuff home, LOL. That summer the garage space changed. It quickly turned into a one truck garage. The other family cars learned to park outside while the truck under went a teenagers make over.

In my mind, I was the best body (bondo) kid in town (my uncle owned his own shop so I knew everything,.. not) and there wasn't nothing a rattle can not could do for me. The current two tone paint job quickly transformed into a one tone primer gray (it was smooth) and the goal was to get the straight axle down. With limited (no funds) that never happened. The overall truck set even front to back and looked nice with it’s smooth hub cabs and white wall tires (on stock split rims). I was in fat city and wanted everyone to know it.

I drove that truck to High School and then something terrible happened. I saw this ‘65 SS Chevy that kicked butt and it was done. I got to know the guy and we were on out way to my first trade.

That was the worst butt kicking I got from my Dad when that trade went down. I heard it all and somethings I still remember today, and this one was the mildest. "Your going to kick your self In the butt for the rest of your life". So true, but who's going to tell a teenager what to do and if you did would he listen to you.

Well long story short. I did kick myself in the butt over the years until I got the opportunity to buy another truck (after the family was grown). I first wanted a 54, like the one I had but quickly changed to the much wanted ‘56. My heart is still with the slant cab and maybe someday that will happen but for now my family only know the Red ‘56 that is front and center in the garage.

TOM CHODAK -11/4/1939 - 10/6/2012 Longtime Pickups Limited member Tom’ Chodak passed away Saturday October 6th.

Tom was born and raised in New York and had a long carrier in illustration at several local firms.

23 members of the Orange County chapter and many other current and past members came out to show their respect to Tom. As the Orange County Chapter pulled up to the front of the church with 11 fat fendered Fords, we quickly took the prime spots so Tom could have one last look at the trucks that he loved so much.

As family and friends shared memories of Tom during the service you couldn’t help but think of Tom’s long membership with Pickups Limited of Orange County.

A member since 1970, Tom had not missed even one North South Run since it started.

As Christmas rolls around this year and we have our annual dinner (that Tom originally arranged) I’m sure we all will think of Tom and share our memories of times we had together. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends Church in Yorba Linda memo to the Thomas A Chodak Memorial fund.

tim terbush -12/31/1946 - 10/4/2012

By now, most of Pickups Limited’s Orange County Chapter members are aware of the recent passing of our dear friend Tim TerBush. Besides being one of the last “good guy” salesman around, Tim was responsible for our Chapter having it’s home at Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park. It was Tim’s initial approach to Ken Grody that made us a part of the Ken Grody Family as Ken himself refers to us. Tim was also instrumental in the creation of Jeff’s Fun Run which is fast approaching its fifth year. Tim will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Timothy Davis TerBush was Born in Minneapolis, MN December 31st, 1946. To Richard and Melba TerBush. Tim was a long time Employee of Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park, CA. He studied at Cal State Long Beach and served his Country in the Army Reserves during the Vietnam Conflict. He was an active Seal Beach Lion for many years always helping them with their yearly car raffle. Recently he began working with the Buena Park Noon Lions during their Silverado Days. Tim was also a Member of the Buena Park Boys and Girls Club board of directors. He was a true “man of the people” and an unoffical “Mayor” of the Buena Park community. He was all things to many people. He is survived by his Wife Denise, Son Andrew, Daughter-in-law Briley, Future grandson Jameson. Brother David TerBush and Randy Mauldin. Sister Lorna Greene, Karen Tikhonoff Nieces, Kelly Tikhonoff, Kayla Mauldin, and Ashley Nephews, Scott Wimmer, Joshua Lopez, Justin Tikhonoff, Michael TerBush, and DJ Dunn. Tim will be missed by everyone who’s life he touched.

Norm Grabowski - 2/5/1933 - 10/12/2012 This is Norm Grabowski, a transplant from New Jersey be way of California and alot more. Norm was a member of the original Pickups Limited of Orange County before he split off with a few others to form the old Burbank Chapter of Pickups Limited and he often has been called “The Father of the T-bucket.”

You saw Norm in Darby’s Rangers and Hooper and in a bunch of other flicks with Frankie Avalon and that crowd that cavorted all over the Southern California beaches. You saw him in Son of Flubber and The Misadventures of Merlin Jones, Monkey’s Uncle, The Happiest Millionaire and Black Beard’s Ghost for Disney and in The Towering Inferno. You possibly saw him too, in Life Magazine and you might have seen him in Hot Rod Magazine and Street Rodder. And if you are of the right age, you would have seen his blue “T-Bucket” in 77 Sunset strip... the car that parking attendant Edd “Kookie” Byrnes drove.

DJ Gary Ewing said “I knew Norm from the early days of PUL. Norm helped start the Burbank Chapter, along with Kim Nye. Kim had a ‘56 flatbed. The meeting place was on the family land in Sun Valley, Ca. The club house was the chicken coupe. Norm built bikes, cars street rods and many, many way out things. The “side hack” a custom trike with a small block chevy for power that I got to watch him build and then he showed it at the Sports Arena. Norm was also in many Disney films and other films as well. In addition to being an actor, Grabowski was also known as an award-winning custom car designer. His hot rods and street rods are well known and respected in the industry and command top prices.”

Norm also spoke with Mary, Norms niece, who grew up with Norm in Sun Valley and learned to drive in Norm’s ‘54 black F-100 with a 454 in it! Norm passed last Friday October 12th from cancer. Norm lived in Leadhill Ark. Services are Nov. 3rd. Mary says she is planning on a memorial tribute show for Norm. Hopefully Pickups Limited will be able to pass that word along to everybody when it happens.

Body and Paint... by Dan Cangro When Chris asked me for a couple of shots of my newly painted truck I knew his motives were noble but I also knew many of you had seen the truck in the paint shop and I did not want to send the wrong message. I remembered a couple of articles that I had written for the Classic Truck Garage web page that covered a lot of what I had done to the truck and thought I would share some of those thoughts as well as part of showing you the pictures.

So here goes…..

Following a long repair schedule, I was ready (or so I thought) for paint. I know the value of money and therefore with a little help form my friends did most of the repair work myself. However, paint is something better left to the professionals and so I began looking for a body shop that would do million dollar work on the CHEAP! By the way finding a cheap shop is an oxymoron. That’s a phrase in which two words of contradictory meaning are used together for special effect. In his case ‘cheap and shop’ are the operative words. Just remember, a cheap shop is not always an honest shop and an honest shop is not always expensive.

Unlike when I had Stars and Stripes painted, I found that certain auto body shops can be customer beware shops requiring as much investigation prior to contracting with them as possible. You are going to be giving them mucho dead presidents so investigate what paints and materials are supplied as part of the job, as well as additional costs for special paints and/ or parts you will be required to supply and who will remove and reassemble parts. Estimates must be detailed! For example, make sure the shop describes in detail what is involved when they say “paint” the vehicle. California law has something to say about what written estimates must contain. The Bureau of Automotive Repair provides an information packet(s) called “Wright it Right”. www.autorepair.ca.gov. or call 1-800-953-5210.

Caution! The outward appearance of the shop means nothing and a friendly smile upon meeting the shop owner doesn’t always equate to good service. Custom shops can be a lot more expensive and there are no guarantees that your job will go any faster but sometimes paying more can mean piece of mind. Shops that advertise three and four hundred dollar paint jobs will usually end up costing you more due little things like painting door jams and still end up looking like a three or four hundred dollar paint job anyway.

Don’t make the mistakes I did. The job was quoted at taking two months to complete and a price was set. Eight months later without any appreciable work having been done and after much anxiety, unhappiness, price increases and talks with the owner it was, almost overnight when they said my truck was done. The results were laughable. I ended up taking it to another shop to fix what had been done incorrectly or were made worse by the so called paint and repairs. I paid the price for my CHEAP job and have the following atips on what not to do.

NEVER begin a build with knowing the shop hourly rates. Secure an expected time frame to completion of your work and if there is a question, refer to your estimate and check on it often.

NEVER pay up front. Establish a percentage of work done to payment schedule and do not pay for the promise of work not yet done.

NEVER allow work to proceed without your approval. If as a result of unforeseen issues and something new is required, you must be contacted prior to work proceeding.

NEVER pay for floor space. Some shops are so small that without a revolving clientele to pay the shop overhead, some owners will charge a fee for occupied floor space that would otherwise be making money for the shop.

NEVER pay for parts without asking for a parts list up front. This should be on the written estimate. Some shops like to use preferred parts suppliers, who they deal with exclusively, thus preventing you from ‘shopping’ for cheaper parts. This should trigger your BS meter. It’s true they prefer certain suppliers because they get credited but, at what price? This doesn’t mean their crooks but you should be able to price check.

ALWAYS avoid the shop that takes on pre-owned dealer cars and insurance repairs as they are generally relied upon to keep the shop doors open. The dealer wants them back as soon as possible and so your vehicle sits and waits. Insurance repairs can take a little longer to get done than dealer cars but both will always put your car at the end of the line. Expect auto body shops to provide this service, so ask first and clarify with the shop if your vehicle will be set aside while others get worked on and how long will it sit before your job (re)starts.

Editor’s Ramblings... are we lucky or what!

by Chris Travers It’s been a hard year for many of us. The government tries to convince everybody that things are just fine while gas prices soar to $5.00 per gallon, unemployment is still out of control (yes I’m still looking), people go on a shooting rampage over a car deal gone bad, and long time members and friends leave us for that big garage in the sky. Is everything out of control?

Are the walls caving in on us? Only if you let them.

Look at how good we really have it. My wife keeps telling me the old “we’ve got our health” thing, but the older I get that doesn’t sound as good as it once did, but we do have each other. How good is it to pick up the phone and call a chapter member for some help on a project or just to go to a cruise night together? Just this past Sunday I caught up with the Amsoil-Street Rodder Magazine Road Tour at the Enderele Center Sunday cruise. WOW! Over 90 vehicles rolled in on top of the normal group. Tomorrow I’m taking off to the SEMA and APEX shows in Las Vegas with Dale Beverley, his son Danny, Pete Haak (from the Fountain Valley Show) and a few other guys to check out what’s new for 2013. So maybe this part is all about me but it could be you too if you work at it. Just don’t let things get you down. Truck not working properly? Get some help and get it fixed. It won’t do you any good sitting in your garage.

Things really are good... A few days ago I was out with my truck when all of a sudden the steering became non-responsive. I checked out the temp gauge and yep, it was way up there. I had tossed a belt. After I pulled over and observed the puddle of anti-freeze underneath, I popped the hood to find the tension pulley missing from my Keene Bell blower. This will put you out of business right away.

Given that my truck usually runs rather cool, the motor holds 8+ quarts of oil, and I was only a few miles from home, I talked myself into limping home on my own. Why? Because I’m a guy that’s why. I didn’t want those Auto Club guys pawing my truck. Everything was going great. I would roll about 1.5 miles then pull over and let things cool off. My great plan was working, besides there was nobody around to make those walls cave in on me. I was only about 2 miles from home when I made my last stop, using a local card-lock station to get off the road. Everything was great... Until I tried to start it up. The great plan did not include disconnecting the fan and my battery was dead. I waited a bit longer but the batter wasn’t going to recover. Out came the Auto Club card. I figured that a few minutes on their jump starter and I would have enough charge to get home. THEN CAME THE MAXIMUM INSULT IN THE FORM OF A PRIUS! That’s right. They are using a PRIUS as their roadside assistance vehicle. Well at least it worked out and I made it home OK. By the way... Keeney Bell replaced the pulley and a new set of bolts at no charge AND on my way home from their shop, I found that missing pulley on the side of the road 3 DAYS LATER so now I have a spare... now that’s what I call lucky.

sema 2012.... October 30-31 - by Chris Travers

The Annual get together of the Speciality Equipment Market Association, better known as SEMA is an exercise in sensory overload. Held each fall in Las Vegas, this gathering of the “Who’s Who” of the automotive world, combined with it’s sister show APEX shows over 2.5 million square feet of exhibit and parking lot space... and that does not include several demo tracks that you can test cars on, a drifting track and an off road exibition track. Oh yes, there are plenty of tools and machines to see. Tons of new and different items for every type of vehicle were offered. Classic trucks were all over the place including the ‘56 F-100 of Chip Foose.

Norm Marshall was being held captive in the Off Road section by his friend that owns CARR a supplier of steps, light bars, and other accessories for trucks. Word was that Sally was off shopping.

It’s now possible to build a ‘40 Ford totally new thanks to this new body which is available from Dennis Carpenter. Our old buddy Pat Ford was on hand to show this gem off and says that a ‘56 cab is being considered!

Classic Instruments has a new gauge set for the ‘56 F-100 that includes everything in the stock look design.

Oak Glen, Run to the Apples... not Run to the Sun Our run took place Tuesday October 16th. Leaving from Brea at 9:00am was Cathy & Dan, Jerry & Jacqueline, Rich & Randi, Bill & Andrea, Rudy & Edith. We met up with Don Story & his friend Bill way down the road as they live almost in the Oak Glenn neighborhood.

I took the lead with 1 other truck and 3 cars behind. We drove out the 60 freeway through Moreno Valley. At the Redlands on ramp, Don swooped down the ramp and slid in behind me for our third truck. Beaumont was our first stop for coffee and rest room visit.

Up the hill we went and I took the lead again to the Apple Country... of course I just drove right through Oak Glen, not paying much attention to where I was going. What a great drive! I went right past our first stop Riley’s at Los Rios Rancho, then right by our next stop at Apple Annies with only one truck and no cars following me. That’s right; Don was right on my tail joining me in going too far. Every one else stopped at Rileys our first stop. Don and I made a “U” turn.

Edith and I were having too much fun just driving our Little Red Truck and leading Don though the hills going about 4 miles to far, we turned around and I let Don lead us back to Rileys for their great Apples.

Apples, Apples everywhere. All kinds and too many to pick from. Everyone tasted a lot of them and picked their favorites. Edith and I like Honeycrisp and fresh apple cider, some also got their great Tri-Tip sandwiches.

Off to Apple Annies for a great lunch. At Annies, if you finish your meal, they offer you another meal free! What a Great Deal. Then it was off to the bakery to get their 5 pound apple pies.

Some of us also went shopping for other things too.

The Apple Pies are just best. After lunch some of our truckers went back to Rileys for more great Apples.

What a great run.

Some of us want to rerun in November for more.

The latest from Mike Hay’s world of fabrication The 302 has been in and out of the Nash and is currently in for the second-last time. This, to allow for proper fitment of the new radiator and condenser, the supporting parts and verification that the modified oil pan allows a one-man engine change with little wrestling of those heavy parts. New brake lines and a redone hump will wrap this phase.

There IS a 5 liter in this shot, albeit with no intake injection parts. Note the detail in the inner wells, made from flat steel; more visually appealing than just flat panels, while stronger and less likely to oil-can.

See, I told ya so! The front upper bracing was modified and is removable, unlike stock, to ease R/R. Also, the radiator is placed 1" from the water pump pulley to allow room for the condenser and electric fan. The condenser mounts are double-L, made from aluminum with rubber mounts, replacing the low=speed masking tape shown here.

Note the available space for the coated headers on the right side.

The left side now has enough room for the header, too, presenting more challenge than the right side due to steering components.

Note the thru-firewall, removable panels that hold the lower shaft support bearing. The upper support for the steering column rests inside the dash 'bubble', but the thru-hole was enlarged for the custom length, GM-style tilt column.

The engine will be extracted for stripping/repainting of the compartment, AFTER the A/C mount is designed, fabbed and firewall cleaned up. New wiring, with fuse box, is ready to replace the 57 year old wires.

Don't even THINK of asking when it'll be complete! Custom work has no reliable calendar.

Also, I am into a weird problem with the reassembled Corvette engine.. no fuel pressure, which seems to be some sort of blockage in the forward feed line.... Arrgh... Mike Hauln’ Freight • november-december 2012

California Bill to Create Legacy License Plate Program Signed Into Law Governor Jerry Brown signed into law legislation (A.B. 1658) to establish the California Legacy License Plate Program. Under the new law, the DMV will create and issue a series of specialized license plates that replicate plates from the state's past. Previously, classic car owners could only revive well-maintained old plates that match the vintage of their vehicle. Among other things, the new law will bring a retro look to modern license plates by allowing consumers to choose from one of three classic designs from the 1950s-1960s (black lettering on yellow background or yellow lettering on black background) and 1970s-1980s (yellow lettering on blue background). The law requires that at least 7,500 applications for any one particular plate must be received by the DMV on or before January 1, 2015.

The Importance of Identity Protection and the DMV’s Role Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States. Identity thieves can gain access to a wide variety of personal information by hacking computers, stealing mail and wallets, and resorting to other scams to trick people. Once these thieves get hold of your personal information, accessing your banking and credit card information will be a breeze. Some thieves may go as far as applying for a driver license (DL) and identification card (ID) under your name. Be sure to follow the steps below to keep your information private and to prevent thieves from being issued a fraudulent DL or ID:

-Store your personal information in a secure place

-Shred mail that may contain personal information before throwing it away

-Make sure passwords are strong passwords that cannot be easily guessed and keep them in a secure location

-Do not carry your social security card in your wallet

-Only carry one credit card at a time in case your wallet is stolen

-Limit the number of pre-approved credit offers you receive by calling 888-567-8688 toll free to opt out of prescreened credit and

insurance offers

Notifying the DMV

To help keep your identity secure, the DMV is doing its part to ensure your personal information remains private. In field offices throughout California, DMV employees are continuously being trained to detect the possible use of any fraudulent documents to ensure the safe keeping of people’s identities. If you are a victim of identity theft, notify the DMV immediately by calling 1-866-658-5758, or emailing dlfraud@ dmv.ca.gov, so the DMV is aware that your DL or ID has been stolen. If your ID or DL is stolen, you must schedule an appointment at your local DMV field office to initiate the replacement process. Be sure to schedule your appointment online for faster service. The process will be different from renewing your DL or ID and will involve additional steps to confirm your identity.

At the appointment, you may be asked to provide a statement describing the details of the identity theft. If you filed a police report, make sure to bring a copy with you. If a report was not filed, you may be asked to explain why. You should also bring copies of canceled checks and bills, to confirm your identity, as well as letters from companies or banks indicating the fraud. Confirming your identity is necessary to prove that you have in fact been a victim of identity theft and these documents will help you do so. To prevent thieves for applying for a DL or ID under your name the DMV needs to take extensive steps to confirm your identity to ensure that a DL or ID is being issued to the correct person.

In addition, you will need to prove and validate your identity with additional, official documentation. With the exception of an expired California DL or ID card, only valid, unexpired documents are accepted. Here is a partial list of acceptable original documents that can be used to prove your identity: -California DL or ID card -U.S. Birth Certificate -U.S. Passport -U.S. Certificate of Birth Abroad or Report of Birth Abroad -Certification of Citizenship -Certification of Naturalization -Permanent Resident Card -U.S. Military Identification Cards -Unexpired foreign passport with a valid I-94 form Other forms of identification may be acceptable, but is determined on a case by case basis. Contact your local DMV for other acceptable documents.

Additional Steps

Along with notifying the DMV of the fraud, you should also file a police report and contact all creditors and the three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion). Keep a copy of the police report and a log of all conversations related to your identity fraud case so that you have a record to refer to. The more details you have, the better; dates, names of people you talked to, telephone numbers of the agencies you called, the time you spent on each conversation, and expenses incurred, are all things that should be noted.

Follow-up on important conversations in writing and send them by certified mail and request a return receipt. You want to document everything so that you can prove that you are a victim of fraud.

Identity theft is a scary thing and can happen to anyone at any time, so protect yourself against fraud by following these tips.

Tips To Make Your Car Last Longer We live in a mobile world. For the most part, we all drive where ever we want to go. We drive to the store, the doctor, work, to visit family and for those of us who have classic cars or trucks, we drive for the sheer enjoyment of it.

Here are a few tips to help make your car or truck last longer. The new one or the old one.

Breathe

Even the most mechanically challenged drivers know to change a car’s oil and oil filter on a regular basis, even if they don’t always do it.

But other fluids and filters also need regular maintenance.

For example, changing your air filter helps your car breathe easier and the engine last longer. If your air filter is clogged, your engine is not performing properly. It also hurts your fuel economy, and it can harm the engine over the long term.

Be Cool

Maintaining your car’s cooling system and the proper coolant level is as important as making sure the engine is well lubricated and can potentially save you thousands of dollars in repairs. A cooling system failure can result in your engine literally melting down. Check those belts, hoses and coolant to prevent problems.

Fully En-Gauged

If there is a problem with your oil pressure, cooling system or even tire pressure on the latest vehicles, your car’s gauges will tell you. Know what’s normal for your vehicle.

Check the gages when you first start up. Any abnormalities need to be addressed immediately.

Regular Service

Find a repair shop and mechanic you trust. And let that shop service your car all the time. When you get sick you don’t go to a different doctor every time. Your doctor knows you from top to bottom, inside and out. A good mechanic will get to know your car and look over it the same way.

Look Closely

You should also be spending time inspecting your car. Every now and then, take five minutes and walk around the car and look at it. Check to see if the tires are wearing unevenly. Open the hood and check out the hoses. Make sure all the lights are working. It only takes a couple of minutes to check things like that.

Get on a Schedule

While your owner’s manual will have a maintenance schedule, another advantage of using the same mechanics on a regular basis is they will be able to make sure you stick to the schedule and take care of things the manual may not include.

If you go to different places each time you have your car serviced, they won’t know the last time you had something done. You may even end up paying for unnecessary repairs. Most good shops keep records so they know when each service was done and what’s due next.

Control Thy Self

Keep It Clean

The way you drive has an effect on how long your car will last. You not only save wear and tear by having good driving habits, but also fuel. Taking off fast and coming to a stop quickly can be bad on a car and affect the engine, the brakes and other things. Sometimes this can be hard to do with that high performance motor, sweet sounding exhaust and hot rod truck.

Taking care of the exterior of your car by regularly washing and waxing it will ad life and value to any vehicle. And don’t forget about the interior. That’s an often overlooked area. Spend time keeping it clean and clean-smelling without perfuming it, and vacuum the carpet on a regular basis.

Keeping your car or classic truck maintained will not only make it last longer but also will make it much more pleasant to drive which will make you want to take better care of it.

If you have a vehicle that looks good and you enjoy getting in it and driving, you’re much more prone to take care of it. And since it won’t last forever, taking care of your car will also increase the resale value. In real estate they say it’s all about location, location, location, but with car values it’s all about condition, condition, condition.

CRUISIN FOR A CURE... by chris travers

The partnership that Pickups Limited has formed with Cruisin for a Cure is truly special.

With so many of our members having been struck by Cancer, especially Prostrate Cancer, the Orange County Chapter continues to give their all to Debbie Baker and CFAC each year.

CFAC is first and foremost about saving lives! The show is to get men to get their PSA test. Since 2001, the free PSA tests provided by CFAC have referred over 1,000 men to their doctors for further testing... including your editor! In most cases, these men were unaware that there was a problem. In over 100 cases, this test directly saved them by seeking further medical help. A mobile testing lab is located at the center of the show each year to provide these all important tests. It doesn’t hurt and only takes a few minutes to give a blood sample. All results are private and mailed directly to you from the lab. The results of the 2012 screening were: 1016 Men screened....128 elevated PSA’s-see your doctor....292 DRE’s-24 were suspicious.

Members and friends of the Orange County Chapter joined this year in our “reserved parking spot” to present a check for $1,500 to The City of Hope from the proceeds of Jeff’s Fun Run 2012 and other fund raising efforts over the past year.

WD-40 to Partner with Chip Foose on Two Charity Truck Builds... from www.ClassicShopTalk.com WD-40 has announced that it will partner with Chip Foose to build two custom-designed trucks that will pay tribute to WD-40’s 60th anniversary and benefit two charities. In addition, they’ll also create a new, limited-edition WD-40 Smart Straw can that features some of Foose’s classic car designs. Foose and WD-40 partnered up last year to create a custom-built vehicle.

“This year, we’re upping the ante and building two vehicles—one that pays tribute to WD-40 Co.’s history and one that celebrates some of its newer specialty products that help auto pros like me get the job done right,” Foose said in a recent press release.

The first project vehicle will be a 1953 Ford F-100 pickup truck that will be designed to look similar to the truck that was used to deliver the first case of WD-40 Multi-Use Product in the early 1950s, back when the company was known as Rocket Chemical Co. The truck, which will be given an updated drivetrain, suspension, wheels, tires and paint, will make its debut at the 2012 SEMA Show. Afterward, the truck will tour West Coast auto shows and events before being auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction. The truck’s sale will benefit two SEMA Cares charities—Childhelp, which aids abused and neglected children, and Victory Junction, which provides camping experiences to special needs and chronically ill children.

The second Foose-designed project vehicle will be a custom 2012 Ford F-350 Super Duty work truck that will be used to spotlight WD-40’s new Specialist line of products. The truck will be given upgrades including Foose-inspired custom front and rear wheel flares, side rockers and front chin spoiler.

The work truck was be displayed in the WD-40 booth at the 2012 SEMA Show (pages 12-13), then it will hit the road for 16 months before being auctioned off to help fund the SEMA Cares scholarship program.

“After raising a combined $400,000 for SEMA Cares with our last three project vehicle builds, we expect these trucks to turn a lot of heads and continue to help a great cause,” said Tim Lesmeister, vice president of marketing for WD-40 Co. “Working with Chip, who’s an expert in his trade and has been using our products his whole life, is a great fit and we look forward to showcasing more of his designs on some limited edition cans this fall.”

WINFIELD & WATSON CUSTOM CAR & HOT ROD GATHERINg ... Info from RebelRodz March 2012 & real life experience!

Gene Winfield is known as one of the gurus of early kustom kar fabrication. Larry Watson was a legendary custom painter and pinstriper. Since 2008 Larry Watson and Gene Winfield have been hosting a hot rod and custom car show at Winfield’s shop in the Mojave desert with the first show held October 19, 2008. Larry died in 2010 but the event lives on and is sponsored by the Rod Tossers car club.

I met up with the “Chopit” family earl for breakfast before heading north on I-5 to pickup their friend Robbie and his cool Ranchero in Glendale, then it was out to Mojave. Some might refer to as the Winfield shop as being in the boonies, but as desolate as his “hood” appears to the casual observer, it is nonetheless a Mecca to many, and once a year for the past four years the pilgrims of kustom culture have been heeding the call to this gathering.

As you can see from these photos, the property was festooned with vehicles of all kinds and conditions, and that was just the back lot. The group of followers showed that a constant in life seems to be cars, trucks, or anything else that might be considered to be a mechanical form of transportation... no matter what it looks like! This event was really cool and like nothing I have ever been to before.

Pickups Limited began in April, 1968 as the result of an ad placed in the Penny Saver. Our Orange County Chapter is the oldest and currently the largest of 7 Chapters found throughout Southern California, with membership limited to 1948-56 F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels. We are an active non-profit organization. Each June we host the largest all Ford truck show in the Western United States, the F-100 Western Nationals while every January we produce Jeff’s Fun Run, a poker run throughout the car culture of LA and Orange Counties. Our business meetings are on the second Thursday of each month at Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park (info below) and we usually plan one group outing each month. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

• Where can I buy an F-100? You would be surprised where they show up. Trucks can be found on E-bay, Auto and Truck Trader and in Drive magazine as well as various F-1 & F-100 on-line sites including pickupslimited.com and at many of the local cruise events. You might even find one in your own neighborhood! If you feel adventurous, you can even build a brand new 1956 F-100 from parts that many vendors provide!

• Where can I get parts and repairs? Check the flip side for a listing of great vendors that support Pickups Limited.

• Can I do repairs myself? Many of us do most of the mechanical tasks ourselves. That’s half the fun. There also are many books available from mechanical to paint and body to interior total restoration.

• Do I have to own a truck to join? Yes but it can be a work in progress. The love for the truck is what comes first. If you are looking for a truck, maybe we can help.

• Do I have to be a member to participate in Club events? Not at all! Non members are always welcome. But if you do a "Run" in something other than a F-1 or F-100, we might ask you to follow the pack.

• How can I get a ride in a F-100? Show up at a meeting or event and ask!

• How can I join Pickups Limited? Come to a meeting or one of our events for the first step. There is a basic probationary period required.

• Do I need special insurance for such an old vehicle? Not really, it depends on the value of the truck. Many companies will offer premium coverage although there are speciality insurance carriers that can insure your baby for the full stated value.
