Welcome to the 30 F-100 Western Nationals th
It’s been thirty years since the first thoughts of a show were planned out at a dinner in Arizona. I’m sure the founding fathers never expected it to last this long or even end up in Anaheim, California. Be sure to read the various articles on the history of the Western Nationals in this program. I’ve been doing the Chairman’s job since 2006 and I’ve come to appreciate how important it is to use all the resources of everyone in the club and outside the club to make this show happen. This show cannot be done by one person, it takes many to be successful, it takes many long hours all year to get things done and I appreciate everyone’s contributions. This show has become a machine of its own and requires oil in the right spots to continue to operate and grow. Since 2006 the Orange County Chapter of Pickups Limited has added many vendors and supporters who have stuck with us in good and bad times, adding value to each show. A special thank to all of our vendors and sponsors. The event broke the 200 show truck mark a few years back and we draw spectators from all over the world! It’s fair to say it has become a “Must Do” of shows if you love Ford trucks or just love trucks. Each year we hear the stories from those who have attended via e-mails, postings on the web or just in bench racing around town. If you attended last year’s show you will have to agree that the quality of the trucks were, off the hook!! With today’s builders imagination, aftermarket parts availability and some Benjamin’s all is possible and you can expect the quality of builds to even get better. I was provided advice by a wise man of show promotions (Mr. Pat Ford) who has helped me maneuver these waters over the years. He told me to “Always do what’s best for the show” and everything else will work. Thanks Pat for some sound advice. So, what’s best for the F-100 Western Nationals is for me to stop talking and get busy working the show! I hope you enjoy the event and take time to visit our vendors. Thanks for coming and we hope to see you next year!

the committee...
When you look it up, you will find that a committee is a group of people officially delegated to perform a function, such as investigating, considering, reporting, or acting on a matter. In our world there are tons of different types of committies like: Subcommittees, Executive committees, Standing committees, Working committees, Ad hoc committees, Conference committee, Executive standing committees, Parliamentary committees, Policy committees, Rules committees, Steering committees, and Fiscal committees which probably explains the overall financial condition of our country right now. At the F-100 Western Nationals, ours is plain and simple a Committee of folks that flat get it done! We are here to make your show experience as memorable as possible.

The Friday Cruise...
June 22nd by Chris Travers
As always the Friday Cruise began with a brief driver’s meeting at the Ayers Suites. Departing around 9:00am, our adventure began with a drive through beautiful Carbon Canyon towards our first main destination, the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona. Carbon Canyon is a unique road that connects the Northern part of Orange County to the far western tip of San Bernardino County as it winds through the communities of Sleepy Hollow and Chino Hills.

Nothing special here other than a good sandwich. This was just a quick stop to pick up our picnic goodies for after the museum tour. Thanks to the crew at Subway #36516 for showing up in force a bit early to take care of us.
The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum opened to the public April 4, 1998 after years of planning and months of hard work cataloging and arranging the exhibit. Housed in a 28,500-square-foot building on the edge of the historic Los Angeles County Fairplex, the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum’s mission is to celebrate the impact of motorsports on our culture. They collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret the vehicles, stories, and artifacts that represent our affection for, and the influence of, automotive speed and style in all its forms. The Museum featured an impressive array of vintage and historical racing vehicles headlined by vehicles from Moon Equipment Company. The NHRA was gracious enough to offer our group a special discounted entry rate of $5 per person.

2011 Truck of the Year
Reid and Donna Johnson - Washington, Utah - Text by Reid johnson
I purchased a ’56 F-100 cab with doors and work began in 2005. Three good friends - Sean Smith, Ed Owens and Mike Jorns - helped with build ideas, design, and construction. We decided that there was not much that needed improving on a ’56 F-100 except to make it smoother and a little more “balanced”. The smooth and balanced part came by way of sectioning the front fenders, moving the wheel openings forward 4” and the Jaguar suspension forward 5½”, widening the rear fenders and making them parallel to the bed and custom smooth running boards. We lowered the cab top 1¼” at the front, rounded the door corners, removed the drip rails and smoothed all the seams. A custom smooth tail gate, dash, dropped bed skirts, rounded stake pockets, smoothed hood and front fender seams and tucked in bumpers finished the look we were after. A good ride height rounded it out. A frame was crafted from original frame rails which were boxed, c-notched and fitted with custom cross members. Ed and Sean fabricated all of the custom billet. Sean designed and fabricated the CNC machined billet taillights. While driving home from the 2010 Ford Truck Supernationals I was caught in a hail storm in New Mexico which resulted in several thousand dollars in damage. I took the truck apart and refinished it. Three complete assemblies prior to the first paint and one after the hail storm. I know this ’56. I’m proud to say the four of us built this truck in my garage. Joe Coker of Leatherpros gets credit for the upholstery and Manny Medina of Alexander’s Paint for assisting with hail damage repair.

Well here we are almost 30 years after our first F-100 Show. When this was put together no one had any idea this would last this long. But what a ride it has been. The First Show was called the Truckin Nationals River Run and was held in Lake Havasu City, Az. The show’n shine was at the state park out on the island. The host hotel was the Shakespeare Inn. The Arizona F-100’s and Westminster Chapter of Pickups Limited were the host’s for the show. Everything was set... all we had to do was pull it off. The day of the show couldn’t have been any better, but we figured out by noon that we had out grown the host hotel’s dining area. So the gang started having a “come to Jesus” meeting and at around 3:00pm, just hours before the banquet, the Moose Lodge agreed to let us use their building. The dinner was on and no one knew it had just been planned for this facility. The next year the show was moved to the Nautical Inn which became its home for a few years. The facility was great. You could park your truck on the beach, sit on your balcony, and have a beer or two while having a bird’s eye view of the whole truck show right from your room. The dinner was held right there. You didn’t need to get back in your truck after you had set up everything for the show. Some don’t know but Steve Stillwell showed up with Larry Saavedra and they put on a show doing The Blues Brothers. Want to have a laugh ask Steve about it. The show was then moved to the Queen’s Bay Resort aka Ramada Inn back then. It found a new home for the show on the golf course. Loads of great memories made at the Golf Course. The first time Bobco came to the show he had one of his first trucks on display that he had just finished. He was camping on the Golf Course in a motor home. About 3:00am he heard something and jumped up to find that the guy in charge of turning off the sprinklers had forgot to do it. So everyone got to clean the trucks again. Also that year we hired a security guard for the trucks out on the golf course. I was the run chairman that year and the guard asked me how we wanted him to handle people coming on the golf course during the night. We told him that all these trucks belong to me until 7:00am in the morning and no one was allowed to move or leave with one without my permission!! Bet you hear this one coming. Well my phone started ringing in our room and had to make many trips down to the golf course with angry people waiting for me because the guard would not let them leave stuff in their trucks. After explaining to them the guard didn’t know anyone they calmed down and were happy we were trying to make sure the trucks were continued on page 19 secure for the night. 16 www.F100westernnationals.com

from page 16 The show has since been moved to Laughlin, Nv. Then back to Lake Havasu City AZ, and now has found a new home in Anaheim, California. Orange County Chapter of Pickups Limited is now The host for the show. They have made it one of the premier show on the West Coast. Many things are planned for this year’s 30th Anniversary Party. Don’t forget to stop by and check out the Show History Tent. We will have old t-shirts, dash plaques, even a full display of the original belt buckles that were the Top Ten Awards for years. There will be many of the old original members from Westminster and Arizona F-100’s answering your questions and having a few laughs about some of your favorite memories. I think all of you need to call and make a request that the Blues Brothers make a Cameo appearance for old time’s sake. See you at the Show - Bill Lee

lake havasu city Arizona Lake Havasu City Arizona was ground zero for Fat Fendered Trucks every spring. I’m not too sure how the locals took this but the truckers loved it. Some enjoyed the area so much they relocated here on their retirement while others had life changing experiences (see page 38). Check out some of these photos and see how many you remember. A few of the trucks are in attendance here at the 30th anniversary event and looking as good as ever.

The Western Nationals Then and Now by Dale Beverley
Most people attending the Western Nationals this year are aware that it originated from the Arizona and Southern California (Westminster PUL) F-100 clubs getting together and establishing a midway point to consolidate their interests and hold a mutual event. Lake Havasu was chosen initially. With golf courses of green grass to park our trucks and a beautiful lake as a backdrop, not too many venues could compare. There were even a few years we parked right on the beach, just a few feet from the water’s edge. This tradition to meet at a half way point continued through 2002 with a few years at Laughlin along the way. In the year 2003 the Western Nationals was detoured to Pigeon Forge for the 50th anniversary of the F-100 and the 25th anniversary of the Super Nationals on the East Coast. This of course became known as the Super Tour and was pioneered by Bill Lee. Afterwards the Western Nationals has kept its present location in SoCal at Featherly Park in Anaheim, Ca. Since the 1953-56 Ford truck was our common interest and excuse to get together, let’s consider the type of trucks and some of the modifications our trucks have experienced over the years. In 1982 the average F-100 needed to be reliable, comfortable for at least a six hour drive, and able to transport whatever luggage needed to endure a three to five day vacation. Gas although expensive relative to what it was in prior years, was not a big factor in driveline selection, and it was readily available. So many attendees focused on nice interiors, air conditioning and sound systems. While drivelines evolved to newer engines, the chassis converted to frame subclips with power steering. Leading the way were the Volare/Aspen and Chevelle/Camaro clips, which not only provided power steering but disc brakes as well. Out back the Ford 9 inch with original leaf springs dominated with an occasional Jag or Corvette independent in the rear. The trucks had a little higher stance otherwise there were frequent reminders in the form of curbs, potholes, and road dips to adjust clearance for their owners who really wanted to get down a little lower than the rest. Of course many risk takers felt secure knowing that most of the clubs assembled caravans to attend. These caravans yielded multiple advantages because safety became a shared responsibility. Also the social aspect of really getting to know other club members over a multiple day period spawned friendships, many enduring a lifetime. As the Western Nationals continued over the years at its locations along the Colorado River, the trucks evolved at a slow but steady rate with trends being represented by those who could afford and take time to implement them. The Pro-Street theme from the late 1980’s and early 1990’s took effect in many of the trucks. Chopped and channeled frames and truck beds made the swap to gigantic tires easier for the trucks to make than their street rod counterparts. Paint jobs went from a single color to multiple colors in the form of striping and graphics. Bright colors continued to endure and red was and still is the dominant color choice for the trucks. Drivelines took a more technical approach with engines having fuel injection systems and overdrives. Also, trending, the Mustang II suspension with rack and pinion steering as one of the optimum choices for ride improvements, And still, emphasis was placed on comfort because most trucks were driven to the Western Nationals.
26 www.F100westernnationals.com
Finally, the latest episode concerning the Western Nationals influence on truck design. With the move to Featherly Park in SoCal in 2004 we did lose some truckers from Arizona and Lake Havasu. Several Western Nationals attendees had already moved to Lake Havasu as a result of discovering that they liked that area. However with the shortened drive to the event the expectation was to increase the attendance by drawing from the So Cal area. A little more risk could be taken with truck design. No longer a six hour drive multiplied by two or necessarily a three day stay in a hotel, more “single purpose” and show trucks began entering the show. Many trucks now could wear custom paint, polish and chrome without fear of being sandblasted on the drive to and from Lake Havasu. Of course a few adventurous truckers might miss the thrill. Trucks can go even lower, although air bag suspensions would give the truckers the benefit of both worlds. Gasoline, although now becoming more expensive than ever, was not the heavy player in engine and driveline choice. Most are now considering their truck as an investment. When the F-100 Western Nationals began thirty years ago, many were considered daily drivers and a hop into the front seat to drive six hundred miles was not such a big deal. What comes next for the Western Nationals? We will have to wait and see but expect more emphasis on the show type trucks and less emphasis on the drivers, although the Friday Cruise will still put you behind the wheel. Whatever course the Western Nationals takes I will plan on being there and I hope to see you as well. Good times for thirty years.

The difference between Pickups Limited of Orange County and many other car clubs is that we drive our trucks. We are always on the move doing a cruise, show, shop tour, swap meet, or weekend trip. Our trucks are always safe and ready to go thanks to our annual Safety Check at Glenn’s Alignment and Brake in Costa Mesa where all hands are on deck to check things out. Our annual Jeff’s Fun Run kicks off the year in Southern California as a poker run and shop tour and the F-100 Western Nationals make up the two big events of the year which enable us to carry out some charity work for Cancer Research. Keep up on our events by checking our bi-monthly newsletter on www.pickupslimited.com. Check out some of our fun events. Better Yet, join us! You are always invited to tag along no matter what you are driving. You never know who you will meet or what you will run over.

WELCOME TO THE WEST COAST’S FINEST CLASSIC FORD TRUCK SHOW Today we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the F-100 Western Nationals. Through the years, the event changed locations and even its title during these past three decades, which is all well documented in other columns published within the pages of this 30th Annual Collector Program. Pickups Limited, Orange County has taken both the time and effort to ensure you become educated to PUL’s history because we all know that you can’t get to where you are going if you don’t know where you’ve been. We are marking this special anniversary with a video presentation of the club’s history, digitally documented photos and newsletters along with long-time club members displaying everything from event awards, belt buckles, T-shirts, dash plaques and photo albums which document not only the 30 years of the F-100 Western Nationals, but also 44 years since the formation of Pickups Limited! I hope you can fit it all in during the show. For new club members, today’s show will be an unbelievable treat and a rare opportunity to rub flesh with the actual founders of Pickups Limited’s Chapters. For those that are curious about how Pickups Limited came about, I present a thumbnail of its history. We really need to thank the Pennysaver; yes, that small, free, throwaway newspaper that we lightly scan for discount coupons. The story goes somewhat like this. Judy Dietz was employed at the local Orange County Pennysaver . Her husband, George Dietz and a few friends with a love for classic trucks, more specifically 1953-56 Ford F-100’s, had been sharing cold beers while they turned wrenches in his garage and driveway. They then came up with the idea that they should form a truck club, limited to truckers who own and drive fat fendered F-100 trucks. Wanting to find out just how many truckers shared this same interest inspired Judy to compose an ad and place it in the Pennysaver to announce the formation of an F-100 truck club. That ad appeared in the March 1968 Pennysaver. It had a phone number and urged anyone interested in trucking to call. Judy documented the calls, took notes and invited potential members to the first of many garage meetings then held at their Garden Grove home. Thus Pickups Limited was created. Back in those days, Limited meant just that; no long bed trucks, no panels, no flat beds, no F-1’s – nothing but 1953 to 1956 Ford F-100 pickups with a six foot bed! In April of 1968, George Dietz was selected to be the very first President of Pickups Limited with Dave Juhl serving as Vice President, Bob Williams was Secretary and the Treasurer was Gene Davis. At 44 years of age, Pickups Limited is unchallenged as the oldest truck club in the United States, and with 30 years under our belt, the F-100 Western Nationals is also one of the longest running custom truck shows as well. Our challenge today is to ensure that 20 years from now, the new members of Pickups Limited with find it easy to trace the club’s history and be able to enjoy their time invested in the preservation of these unique fat fendered trucks. Enjoy the show whether it brings a tear to your eye or a big smile as you reminisce these past three decades of F-100 Western Nationals history! Life changing experiences
by will willis & lynette fisher - lake havasu city, az “Stumbling in,” (Susan Quatro from the song of the same name), 1730 hours, 8 May 2012. How did I arrive in a cooking class on this night, in Lake Havasu City, Arizona? No, not why, as many of you know, those who had to suffer my fare at one time or the other, I NEED the cooking classes. This is NOT a Ricky Bobby piece, so if the words “I” or “me” appear too frequently, indulge me, the reason is not narcissism, I know no other way to get from the cooking class to the acknowledgement of those wonderful F-100 Western Nationals and what they have meant to me.
All the memories of the past runs were perhaps capitalized in 1987 when my Dear friend Steve Stillwell, accompanied by Larry Saavedra and Diane Nelson acquired the required shoes, hats, and clothing to form a then current musical group to perform a then current very popular song. The first problem was to overcome the wrong color of attire acquired from Good Will. Being truckers, hell, spray paint is cheap, so off we go to the hardware store, (Cheaper than auto parts store) to purchase paint and transform somewhat mundane attire into what on, about the third drink, or the fortieth look, or maybe the third look and the… anywho, they became, Steve and Larry, looking like (ok, one must use some imagination) THE BLUES BROTHERS. All went well, well, no it did not, any kid with a tiny transistor radio strapped to his ear, would have enjoyed world class sound compared to the PA system that evening. Not sure, that seems to be next to the last year we were allowed at the Nautical Inn. Maybe no coincidence! Let us not forget where we are going here. Sometime during the 1987 event, I called the love of my LIFE, Lf (Lynette Fisher) and smartly announced that we were moving to Lake Havasu City. I faintly remember something about reducing alcohol consumption. During all this I, oh, I did not tell you that I grew up in Louisiana, my first truck was a NEW 1954 F-100, six cylinder, three on the tree (but at full throttle, one found the difference between second and third on the speedo, imperceptible (yes, I really wanted to use a word we had to look up) and the truck was not really mine, educated at the University of Mississippi, and when I first started coming to the F-100 Western Nationals while living in Arkansas. For a guy who spent ten years, ten months, and nine days in the United States Marine Corps, this was quite a loop. None of the above prepared me for the effect that “these ugly old Ford trucks” (Pat Ford, circa 1980) would have on my future. OOPS, back to what is important. The, YOU, folks are what make the F-100 Western Nationals such a wonderful joining together of folks, especially F-100 folks. Lately, along with all the wonderful hospitality, many of us would never have been allowed the opportunity to be closely exposed to John Force, Surf City, TCI, and, many more promoters of the automotive sport which we have enjoyed. However, we must, also, always remember F-100 icons, those who left us too soon: • Leston Predbetter, or Western Bedwetter, NO, my friend Preston Ledbetter – Mr. F-100 • Jeff Hornsby – Everyman • Lupe Boyd – The gentleman • Wendel Smith – Let’s have fun • Chuck Wimbish- Ice cream, anyone and too many others, whom I regret not having known better. 34 www.F100westernnationals.com
And be thankful for our current HEROS: • Steve Stillwell – Dear friend and “git’er done (never dreamed he would be a F-100 club member much less the president.) • Bill Lee – uh, uh, certainly not just one word. Let’s try “persistent.” • Chris Travers – multi talent • Ed Oe – go to man • Glenn Kerr - Mr. Safety, and he knows a lot too • Pat Ford – “yes, we have F-100 parts” • Mr. Bill Beverly – Godfather • Dale Beverly – the Geek • Rich Miller – SIT down, SHUT up • Bob Baxter – I fixed it • Dianne Hamano – Your short 5 cents • Brad Romaine – Mr. All around good guy • Walt Pocock – “if you are my friend, you are my friend” • Larry Lopez – You want me to spray WHAT? • Brad Romaine II – NO, your thanks is enough • Gary Ewing – Play it again, Sam • Rudy Weber – pretty is not always safe OK, I am running out of allotted space, to the rest of you guys, what a group, we are so proud to know you. A few notable outsiders: Steve Niehiesl, Mr. Lew Thompson, Anthony Grieco, Joe Joseph (Snake Oil), now I am certainly running out of allotted space, and there are so many more. Our lives are better for having known them. It is time we addressed herding cats, shortly after graduating from the Naval Academy Preparatory class, I was introduced to the term “herding cats” by being placed in charge of training 3000 sailors to march in newly elected President Kennedy’s inauguration parade. I sure hope that never appears on my resume, ANYWHERE. All that I learned was that it is impossible to herd cats, especially in a few weeks. Leap forward to the Western Nationals in 2003, we were instructed to place a number of F-100’s in a circle within which the numbers 4 and zero were formed by other F-100’s, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the F-100. All was well until the powers that be realized that the image maker in the sky was ready prior to the image being formed on the ground. This was going to cost someone some money. I was quickly reminded that “you can’t herd cats.” We still had great fun and the “shoot” came out good. A little was written earlier about the banquets, i.e. the “BLUES BROTHERS,” I am here to tell you, (that is Southern for “I am here to tell you”) that back in the day, we had banquets, awards ceremonies, or whatever you want to call them, which were a blast. And the war for a belt buckle was intense. However, times have changed and that is NOT a viable activity today so let us reflect with good memories. When you see a member of the staff this weekend, walk over, say a thank you and shake a hand. What am I doing at 1730 hours, 10 May 2012 as I write this article? I am living a dream which could only have been possible had I not made the life changing move to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, a change directly attributed to the F-100 Western Nationals. A common conversation starter in Lake Havasu City is “what brought you to Lake Havasu City?” Lynette and my answer, “old ford trucks,” which gets strange looks and usually starts an interesting discourse. What fun. Now, that is a life changing experience. To all of you, we are, and will be, eternally grateful. Wp & Lf Will Willis was a contributing editor for Ford Trucks, Classic Trucks, and the Ford Folio in Truck’n. During his college years, both undergraduate and graduate, he had a speed shop, WILLpower Engineering. Being the Ford guy, Will soon became Willfordp among friends and customers. This was eventually shorten to Wp. Will built a Ford Pickup for the local Ford Dealer (Oxford, MS) using a brand new 1969 Police Car which was wrecked less than a mile form the dealership. During Thanksgiving last year, Will & Lynette were back there and the Dealer’s son still had the truck!! Lynette Fisher is one of the premier real estate brokers in the Lake Havasu City AZ area. Having fully entrenched herself in the community over the past 22 years, Lynette has won numerious sales and civic awards, all while keeping her passion for Fat Fendered Ford Trucks... and Will. She’s a great cook too! ed.
