seal beach car show - saturday april 27th... by chris travers
The annual Orange Count Rite of Spring, better known as the Seal Beach Car Show was once again a big hit. This event is so popular that each year they sell entries for the following year’s show one year ahead of time... And it sells out! Thanks to Glenn Kerr presenting many members to the show committee as event judges. We are “allowed” to be a big part of this event and have our own private parking lot that is front and center to the entire show. We met at our usual spot in Sunset Beach for the easy cruise into the venue. Our reserved parking spot gave us the benefit of showing up a bit later than most of the others while still maintaining a prime parking spot. GOOD JOB GLENN! Besides the huge (525) number of beautiful vehicles, this show does one of the best jobs of bringing families together at a car show. There were games, stickers, balloons and other goodies to keep the kids interested but most of them just enjoyed looking at the hardware. According to the City, over 10,000 people were walking up and down Main Street taking everything in. The local Chamber of Commerce provides shuttles to and from the pier to make access and parking easy for everybody. If you missed this show, make your plans for next year NOW! Get Ready For the F-100 Western Nationals By Steve Stillwell I was taking notes at this month’s past meeting and realized how the growth of Pickups Limited’s membership paralleled the growth of the F-100 Western Nationals. As a matter of fact, there is little doubt a number of new members joined the club due to a very positive experience at the Western Nats! While I had rubbed flesh and enjoyed a long friendship with a number of OC members during my 30+ years as editor of Truckin’ and StreetTrucks magazines, it wasn’t until January of 2004 that I officially joined the club and built my first Ford F-100 custom truck. Like I said, I had attended and documented hundreds of F-100 events through my magazine years including Pickups Limited’s Truckin’ Nationals which had a number of locations through the years, the most memorable being the ones held in and around Havasu. Unfortunately, the last Truckin’ Nationals held in Havasu was on a black asphalt parking lot where the pavement literally melted and the once overflow crowd had diminished to about 50 trucks and one vendor. Fast forward a few years as The Super Tour was held instead of the Nationals. Great memories which will last a lifetime. The following year, the event’s name was changed to the F-100 Western Nationals and the growth of this event was on a positive roll. The park-like atmosphere and cooler temperatures of the Anaheim Hills has continued to lure a growing number of specialized classic pickup parts vendors and a growing number of show attendees. When I joined Pickups Limited, OC in 2004, the club had dwindled down to about seven active members. Since then, the club has gone through many changes and adopted a very positive attitude towards growing our membership by becoming more visible at events, creating club art that we are all proud to wear, having an established meeting place and time and hosting the West coast’s finest classic Ford truck event. As a new member, it is now your turn to welcome fellow Ford truck enthusiasts to our show. We will all be wearing light colored shirts, white or light grey with the club’s logo proudly displayed so you will be easily recognized. Please take time to extend a handshake to our visitors and fellow Pickups Limited Chapter members, just like we did when you visited the F-100 Western Nationals for the first time. I consider every member to be a personal friend and look forward to this annual event to be able to greet many individuals that we only get to see once a year. Wear your OC shirt, share a smile and be ready to shake the hands of many fellow Ford truck lovers at this year’s F-100 Western Nationals.

31st F100 Western Nationals - June 22nd It’s that time of the year again Since I was assigned to be the chairman of the show in 2006 by Jeff Hornsby, I have been honored to work with many talented people over the years in the OC Chapter of Pickups Limited. The quality of the show is the result of our members. No one person can take all the credit since we are just the caretakers of a show that started 31 years ago. But as a group, the progress and development of the show we can take credit and feel proud of what we accomplished as a group. Here are two examples of ideas and how we work together. Back in 2006 the creation of the show program was started as an idea from Steve Stillwell and shared it with Chris Travers and I. Since then Chris has done an excellent job with the design and development of this document. Chris also developed our bi-monthly chapter News Letter. The Friday Cruise was started by Jeff Hornsby and the first one was called the “Jeff’s Beach Cruise”. Jeff wanted to do something fun before the show and after Jeff died Chris Travers continued the Friday Cruise and each year, has surpassed the previous one. There is a show committee of key members assigned to different tasks and they select members to help them in those tasks. These tasks are pre-registration, day of registration, parking, venue and vendors layout, music, raffle and 50/50, show program, Friday cruise, awards, show historian, and clean up. It takes a complete dedicated group year round to do a show like the F100 Western Nationals and I have been honored to guide our group along the way. See you at the show, Ed Oe VP Pickups Limited ph 714 552 1919 www.pickupslimited.com www.f100westernnationals.com www.jeffsfunrun.com PS: If you have yet to register for the show, please do it today. Visit the chapter website at www.pickupslimited.com to use secure online Pal Pal or print up the form and turn it in at the Gate the day of the event.

... by chris travers It is promoted as the West Coast’s Largest Antique Auto, Corvette, Porsche, Street Rod and Volkswagen Swap Meet and Classic Car Show and they mean it. Even in slow economic times, the wait at the gate for as many as 2,500 cars to enter can be long and with 2,700 vendor spaces, the choices of what to buy even longer. I usually have all I can handle to see all of the cars parked on display or to sell let alone walk through the entire swap meet. In fact, I have never even made it to the VW/Porche side of the event as I’m usually too tired to do the extra walking. But with an estimated 20,000 people total in attendance, one thing for sure is that the for over 38 years of it’s existence, entertainment factor is always pushing red line.
Not a bad turnout for breakfast at IHOP in San Dimas. We caught up with a few other members inside the swap meet.
We had barely turned off our ignitions when a photographer ran up to us asking if he could take some shots of our trucks with his “girls”. Of course we HAD to say yes.
So you have never been to Pomona? You need to either get there real early or around 8:30 like we do to avoid a huge wait in line Here is a working ‘56 deluxe cab with the genuine TUXEDO (white top) OPTION

The magic behind every outstanding vehicle is always found in the smallest of details. From original window stickers to a trunk full of period perfect maps, cleaners, and other chemicals, local car shows display the finest in creativity. Take the guys that showed up with the two Helms Bakery trucks. These guys not only had the vehicles down pat, but they found or re-created tons of detailed product packaging to bring back fond memories of that whistle blowing and those jelly donuts. Drive in memorabilia is always popular as is local drag racing flash backs, but check out that ROUSH motor that has all of the plug wires clocked perfectly around the valve cover. WOW... THAT’S DETAIL!

What’s going on at chopit kustoms?
Who says that all the guys at Chopit Kustoms work on are Lowriders, Lead Sleds, and Bubble Tops. During a recent visit I counted no less than EIGHT trucks in various stages of construction, including two F-100’s! Yep it’s true. Is there some type of transformation going on since these guys moved out west a little more than two years ago? Who knows for sure but that is Nick “Chopit Jr.” Fioto posing next to his own latest acquisition... yep this F-100 is slated to be a “Shop Truck” in the near future. The other projects include “C” notching the frame on a Chevy, finishing up two El Caminos’ a ‘46 Ford and a ‘53 F-100 “project gone bad” that a customer brought in to have re-worked and finished.

Who wants to represent Pickups Limited in the Braille Rallye this year? The 2013 event will be held on Saturday July 27th. Last year two of us participated and it was a fun rewarding event. Basically, it’s a real sports car rallye that pairs a navigator who can’t see the road with a driver who can’t read the instructions. You’ll be paired up with a blind student from the Braille institute who will serve as your navigator. He or she will read to you the rallye instructions which are written in braille. There will be a luncheon and awards ceremony at the end of the rallye. YOU MUST GET YOUR APPLICATION IN BY JULY 15th. THERE IS A $15 REGISTRATION FEE PAYABLE ON THE DAY OF THE RALLYE. THIS FEE INCLUDES THE PURCHASE OF A SHIRT FOR YOUR STUDENT. ADDITIONAL SHIRTS MAY BE PURCHASED FOR $10 EACH, ALSO PAYABLE ON DAY OF THE RALLYE. REMEMBER: The primary purpose of the Braille Rallye is to give the students a fun incentive to aid in their mastery of Braille, increase reading skills, and gain confidence in communicating with the sighted world. The organizers of the Braille Rallye are well aware of the increasing costs of operating vehicles these days. We sincerely hope that it will not deter you from participating in this year’s event. This day is one of the most important days for the students participating in the Braille Institute Youth Programs throughout Southern California; one that motivates them to learn and to be-come proficient in Braille and large print reading. Please don’t disappoint them. CONTACTS: Patricia West, Registrar 6471 Newbury Drive Huntington Beach, CA 92647 714-841-1249 braillerallye@gmail.com

Safety check... saturday march 16th ... by Chris Travers
FFICIAL
Well, it looks safe to me... what do you think Louie?
TESTER
The 2013 Orange County Chapter Safety Check has come and gone with no serious problems uncovered. Sure there was the standard loose this and leaking that D O N UT with a few surprises thrown in for giggles but overall it shows that we take good care of these old trucks and pay them the respect that a 50+ year old vehicle demands. O
What makes this event so good is that everybody has the opportunity to get up close with their truck as well as those of the other members. We often see some great ideas and apply them to our truck like the removable cross member that Rich and Larry have on their trucks under the transmission or the floor jack locator pad that I use under the radiator support on mine. It’s all cool stuff and helps to feed what seems to be a constant upgrading process that we perform and have grown to love with our trucks. That’s what makes this Chapter so much fun. Once again Glenn Kerr provided the use of his extensive shop at Glenn’s Brake & Alignment so that we could get every truck on a lift, pull brake drums for inspection, and go over all of the other items on our 50+ item checklist. We do a better and much more complete chedk on the trucks of Pickups Limited than the National Street Rod Association, and Goodguys combined! Who’s the king of the hill now?
Glenn’s staff can fix anything with just one squirt!
Mas really knows his way around a grill or stove. Don’t get in his way when he has cooling tools in his hand.
The day wrapped up with some great burgers thanks to Chef Mas and his kitchen boy Norm. Thanks to them, Glenn and all members in attendance for supporting this annual event.
We even had our own Ice Box Girl!
As always, there was a great turnout of good looking Fat Fendered Fords 16 www.pickupslimited.com
Hauln’ Freight • may - june 2013
Our newest member Louis Gagliardotto learned the importance of our safety check with the discovery of a cross support/shock mount that was totally ripped apart.
Abe Roybal found out that the clown that assembled his rear brakes had the shoes reversed... Abe’s entire rear end and suspension came from your Editor during my C-4 suspension swap. Bill Crisel received the news that the passenger side mounting tab on his transmission was stripped and the bold had almost fallen out! This was an easy fix with two washers and a lock nut. You can also learn some good things by checking out other trucks too. Look at this modified cross member on Rich Miller’s black truck. The welded flanges and bolts make this item removable which is really important when you want to replace that transmission. Don Walz once again provided the comedy highlight of the day with this hidden wrench trick. As “his story goes” he was bleeding his brakes a few weeks before and decided to leave the wrench in place for easy access. Don states that he will stick with that story. The Prez Steve Stillwell has a reoccurring problem with the boots on his steering rack. Once again the boot had come loose and was beginning to lead on that beautiful orange frame. Nobody could figure out what the dangling red wire was for on Rich Miller’s truck. As it was red and looked to be some type of hot lead, it was taped out of the way. Rich later discovered that it was the hot lead for his sound system amp.
Now here are two guys sharing their total satisfaction in a days work well done... or are they just happy that they kept their hands clean throughout the day?

USPS Muscle Cars Stamps
Issue Date: February 22, 2013
With the issuance of the Muscle Cars (Forever®) stamps, the U.S. Postal Service celebrates five iconic automobiles: the 1966 Pontiac GTO, the 1967 Shelby GT-500, the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, the 1970 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda, and the 1970 Chevelle SS. Each of these cars represents the adventurous spirit of the muscle-car era. Fast, powerful, and eye-catching, muscle cars roared their way onto America's roads in the 1960s. Typically equipped with big, powerful engines, the five high-performance vehicles depicted on the stamps represent the era's adventurous spirit. Artist Tom Fritz based his artwork on photographs of the cars. Fritz said he used bright-colored oil paints on hardboard to try to “capture the emotive quality of the vehicles.” Growing up in Southern California, Fritz became familiar with the power of muscle cars. The paintings, Fritz added, are “a projection of my memories of the vehicles.” Muscle Cars is the third issuance in the America on the Move series. The stamps were designed by art director Carl T. Herrman. The first issuance in the series, 50s Sporty Cars (2005), was followed by 50s Fins and Chrome (2008). The Muscle Cars stamps are being issued as Forever® stamps in self-adhesive sheets of 20 (4 of each design). Forever stamps are always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate. https://store.usps.com/store/browse/uspsProductDetailMultiSkuDropDown.jsp?productId=S_470504&categoryId=promo_MuscleCars

Editor’s Ramblings... by Chris Travers After almost a year in exile, I recently brought my 1964 Austin Mini Cooper “S” out of moth balls from within the Ken Grody warehouse. The Grody folks are kind enough to allow me to store this “alternative lifestyle” vehicle where is it safe and dry while the F-100 sleeps at home. This presented the opportunity to attack a growing to-do list on this interesting creature of a car that can bring smiles, cold sweats, (just ask Gloria and Steve) and challenges to anybody.
You see after almost 20 years of ownership, I thought it was finally time to install the radio and tidy up a few electrical issues. More on how to cram 10 pounds of sound system into a 5 pound bag later, but anything on a pre 70’s British car that even smells like electrical is dominated by components made by Lucas Industries. These interesting and creative “bits” as they say across the pond take on a personality of their own. Try as you might, there is not enough solder, tape, and other modern connections to overcome the many obstacles that seem to crop up on their own. I think it is the vehicles way of getting back at you like a pet dog does when you come back from a two week vacation. Anyway all is well again in Mini land but throughout the project, all I could think about were those great Lucas jokes... Many of which are based on fact. Enjoy these classics... • The Lucas motto: “Get home before dark.” • Lucas denies having invented darkness. But they still claim “sudden, unexpected darkness” • Lucas--inventor of the first intermittent wiper. • Lucas--inventor of the self-dimming headlamp. • The three-position Lucas switch--DIM, FLICKER and OFF. The other three switch settings--SMOKE, SMOLDER and IGNITE. • The original anti-theft devices--Lucas Electric products. • I’ve had a Lucas pacemaker for years and have never experienced any prob... • If Lucas mae guns, wars would not start either. • Did you hear about the Lucas powered torpedo? It sank. • It’s not true that Lucas, in 1947, tried to get Parliament to repeal Ohm’s Law. They withdrew their efforts when they met too much resistance. • Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into a Land Rover and asked the owner “How can you tell one switch from another at night, since they all look the same?” “He replied, it doesn’t matter which one you use, nothing happens!” • Back in the ‘70s Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which didn’t suck. • Quality Assurance phoned and advised the Engineering guy that they had trouble with his design shorting out... So he made the wires longer. • Why do the English drink warm beer? Lucas made the refrigerators, too. • Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone... Thomas Edison invented the Light Bulb... Joseph Lucas invented the Short Circuit. • Recommended procedure before taking on a repair of Lucas equipment: check the position of the stars, kill a chicken and walk three times sunwise around your car chanting: “Oh mighty Prince of Darkness protect your unworthy servant.” • Lucas systems actually uses AC current; it just has a random frequency. 24 www.pickupslimited.com

bigfoot speaks... by Rudy Weber
If you missed our annual truck inspection at Glenn’s Alignment and Brake service, you missed our best outing so far this year. Chris again was my key inspector and with the help of all our brother club members, this help make this a great day. Glenn’s right hand man Albert Contreras was my special right hand too in helping do everything we asked of him from I need a tool, to take off these wheels (please) etc. Food : Glenn again out did himself this year with hamburgers and all the fixings. Some of our members rolled up their sleeves especially Mas who could give lessons in cooking. We had over 40 members in attendance and our wives went out of their way to make this a great outing and take care of each of us. They also traded or sold some garage finds to each other. We inspected a total of 18 trucks including San Diego’s Jack Gechter. With a few notations, all passed the inspection. Check out where Don keeps his special tool. Ps: I want to thank Chris for my special “twist” donut from Adams Avenue Donuts, home of the Donut Derelicts Saturday morning cruise. Big Foot speaks Rudy Weber

DEFINITION OF ACCELERATION - restated One top fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows of stock cars at the Daytona 500. It takes just 15/100ths of a second for all 6,000+ horsepower of an NHRA Top Fuel dragster engine to reach the rear wheels. Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1-1/2 gallons of nitro methane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced. A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to drive the dragster’s supercharger. With 3,000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle. At the stoichiometric (stoichiometry: methodology and technology by which quantities of reactants and products in chemical reactions are determined) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture of nitro methane, the flame front temperature measures 7,050 deg F. Nitro methane burns yellow.. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases. Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder. Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After halfway, the engine is dieseling from compression, plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1,400 deg F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow. If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half. In order to exceed 300 mph in 4. 5 seconds, dragsters must accelerate an average of over 4G’s. In order to reach 200 mph (well before half-track), the launch acceleration approaches 8G’s. Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have completed reading this sentence. Top fuel engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light! Including the burnout, the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load. The redline is actually quite high at 9,500 rpm. Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimate $1,000.00 per second. The current top fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.428 seconds for the quarter mile (11/12/06, Tony Schumacher, at Pomona , CA). The top speed record is 336.15 mph as measured over the last 66’ of the run (05/25/05 Tony Schumacher, at Hebron, OH). Putting all of this into perspective - - You are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter ‘twin-turbo’ powered Corvette Z06. Over a mile up the road, a top fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the ‘Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and pass the dragster at an honest 200 mph. The ‘tree’ goes green for both of you at that moment. The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within 3 seconds, the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where you just passed him. Think about it, from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1,320 foot long race course. ...... and that my friends, is ACCELERATION!

Give Me A Brake... by Glenn Kerr
The Time Machine Our classic trucks and cars are a lot of things. One of them being time machines. They can bring back memories of another era. Let’s look at 1956. Why 1956? No special reason other than many of us are driving a 1956 Ford pick up. How old were you back then. I was 8 years old. Seems like a long time ago. I still remember driving in our family car heading to Disneyland for the first time. I couldn’t believe it was really happening. For an 8 year old it was a big deal. I wasn’t into cars too much yet. My mode of transpiration was still human powered and had two wheels, having taken off my training wheels just months prior. At 5 I had already taken my bike apart to see how it worked. Took me almost all day to get it back together. Some things haven’t changed much. Chevrolet’s big news for 1956 was the restyled Corvette. The previous year’s wire mesh covered headlamps were gone. Deeply inverted coves blended into the doors and front fenders. From every angle, the Corvette looked fabulous. Ford’s Lincoln division was a big player with the launch of its Continental Mark II 2-door hardtop. The Mark II was a bold move to test the level of interest for a nearly-$10,000 automobile at a time when the typical domestic car retailed for about $2,000. It was beautifully styled and had a European flair. Chrysler Corporation, flush with success in 1955, made minimal styling changes. Its contribution to beauty was the exciting Plymouth Fury. From front to rear, it was part of the forward look of Chrysler. Quarter panels included gently rising fins. It was the year that Alcoa Aluminum partnered with Plymouth to supply the gold anodized aluminum side trim. Believe it or not, there were other things besides cars back then. TV shows included “As The World Turns” and “The Price is Right”. Elvis Presley appears on the Ed Sullivan show and enters the music charts for the first time, 28 www.pickupslimited.com

with “Heartbreak Hotel”, the first of 170 hit singles. There was also Bill Haley and the Comets, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash. We had Dwight Eisenhower as president and Congress approves the Highway Act for construction of the interstate highway system. Egypt seizes the Suez Canal and we had Fidel Castro start a revolution in some faraway island. What do you remember from 1956? I was in third grade at 156th Street school in Gardena. It was the year I attempted to kiss my first girl. Got rejected. Some things haven’t changed all that much. Our benches at this school were covered in some type of coating that looked like automotive undercoating, only softer. We used to burn it with magnifying glasses. We did this with ants too. I was a naughty boy. Again, some things haven’t changed much. Actually, my time machine takes me back to high school days. Cruising and playing the radio. We would drive just to drive. One of Terry and my favorite things is to visit the Dairy Queen on Coast Highway in Huntington Beach for a couple of Blizzards. Then cruise down to the parking lot just north of the Salt Water Plunge and skating rink, that’s north of the pier today, to enjoy our frozen treats. Of course, we have to cruise Main Street on the way home. Things still haven’t changed much. Summer is just around the corner. Where will your time machine take you?
As always, if you have any questions, please free to call me. And as always, if I don’t know the answer or can’t find one, I’ll make one up that sounds plausible.

1948 - 1956 FORD F-1 & F-100 TRUCK ABOUT US
Pickups Limited began in April, 1968 as the result of an ad placed in the Penny Saver. Our Orange County Chapter is the oldest and currently the largest of 7 Chapters found throughout Southern California, with membership limited to 1948-56 F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels. We are an active non-profit organization. Each June we host the largest all Ford truck show in the Western United States, the F-100 Western Nationals while every January we produce Jeff’s Fun Run, a poker run throughout the car culture of LA and Orange Counties. Our business meetings are on the second Thursday of each month at Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park (info below) and we usually plan one group outing each month. Check the flip side of this flyer for a sample of Pickups Limited’s Orange County Chapter events. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
• Where can I buy an F-100? You would be surprised where they show up. Trucks can be found on E-bay, Auto and Truck Trader and in Drive magazine as well as various F-1 & F-100 on-line sites including pickupslimited.com and at many of the local cruise events. You might even find one in your own neighborhood! If you feel adventurous, you can even build a brand new 1956 F-100 from parts that many vendors provide! • Where can I get parts and repairs? Check the flip side for a listing of great vendors that support Pickups Limited. • Can I do repairs myself? Many of us do most of the mechanical tasks ourselves. That’s half the fun. There also are many books available from mechanical to paint and body to interior total restoration. • Do I have to own a truck to join? Yes but it can be a work in progress. The love for the truck is what comes first. If you are looking for a truck, maybe we can help. • Do I have to be a member to participate in Club events? Not at all! Non members are always welcome. But if you do a "Run" in something other than a F-1 or F-100, we might ask you to follow the pack. • How can I get a ride in a F-100? Show up at a meeting or event and ask! • How can I join Pickups Limited? Come to a meeting or one of our events for the first step. There is a basic probationary period required. • Do I need special insurance for such an old vehicle? Not really, it depends on the value of the truck. Many companies will offer premium coverage although there are speciality insurance carriers that can insure your baby for the full stated value.
