30th Annual F-100 Western Nationals What a celebration!!
by Ed Oe - event chairman
30 years has officially passed for the F-100 Western Nationals and I am here to report that the show is alive and well! What a day it was. The day started very early for most of us and I’m quite sure that many of you were working late into the night to get your trucks ready for the show. It was sure was noticeable by the condition and quality of the trucks that attended. Of course this show was all about the legends of the show and the major role they played keeping it going over the years in one way or another. From the smiles, and yes tears, that many had once they laid eyes on a old friend, the emotions were high at times. In some cases, it had been 20 years or longer since they had last seen each other. It was very touching to see their memories were as fresh as yesterday. There were three truckers honored today; Gary Ewing who started the show, Bill Lee for keeping the show going from Arizona to it’s current home in Anaheim California and Dale Beverley who only missed one show. All three have held positions in Pickups Limited over the years and gave effortlessly during good times and bad times.

I would also like to thank everyone who came to the show. While other car shows have decreased in numbers us Ford guys keep on truckin’. The registration numbers for this 30th anniversary event were the same as last year while spectators were way up! Good job to everybody for knowing a good time when they see it. continued on page 6

Comments from the 30th annual F-100 Western Nationals Al Ubrun: “I was shocked when I entered the park and saw all of the Ford trucks parked on the left before the gate. I was wondering if the show was moved from under the trees. It wasn’t until I recognized several of the pickups as being Orange County rides that I realized what you guys had done. Dang, how many members do you have in your club to have this many trucks all parked together? You guys and gals do such a great job of hosting this show.”
Gary Ewing: “Sorry Steve, but I am getting a little emotional. We have 30 Pickups Limited members who attended the very first show that are all here today. Can you believe it, 30 members from 30 years ago? And yes, I remember that you were there covering the show for Truckin’ magazine. You guys have given me the greatest gift anyone could ever give me. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your 30th Anniversary Celebration.” He wiped a tear from his eye as he mentioned, “I really miss Wendell Smith.” Pat Ford: “You know that Jan and I put 30 years into making the F-100 Supernationals into the event
it has become. You guys (PUL) now have best all-classic Ford truck show on the West Coast. Heck, you have the best Ford F-100 show period. You guys have captured the spirit of what kind of show the classic truck world needs to ensure the future preservation of the fat fendered Ford trucks. Jan and I had a great time and can’t wait to come back next year!”
Diane from Mid-Fifties: “With the addition of the Friday cruise, you guys have now made this event
into the West Coast’s finest two-day Ford truck show. We hauled a full truck load of classic truck parts for customers who ordered parts and had us bring them to the show. This was a win-win for both Mid-Fifty and our customers who saved a bundle on shipping. I think they like our service where we personally hand deliver parts to them. Our business will focus on pre-selling even more parts that we will deliver to customers in 2013 to the 31st Annual F-100 Western Nationals.
Mid-Fifty’s Scott Miller added: “We will be bringing the Limo (stretched F-100 parts and people
hauler) to next year’s event. I know this crowd will really appreciate our truck and how much we are involved. At this show we get the opportunity to put a face with a name when we bring this many parts to the West Coast.” When asked about sales he commented, “We aren’t taking anything home. We sold practically everything we brought to the show. And, we had a great time.”
Bill Lee: “Wow, it is great to see this many old friends. Thanks for having me and Gary host the show’s history tent.” Walt Pocock - Mr. #1: “Hey Steve, I just wanted to let you know that I am the first one to register for next year’s show. Can’t wait to see what you guys have planned for next year.” Will Willis : Fantastic show. See you next year. I personally wish to thank all Pickups Limited, Orange County Chapter members for being such gracious women and men when it came to hosting the 30th Annual F-100 Western Nationals. This show will go down in the club’s history as being one of our finest events – ever. What a display of trucks, all of you made our guests feel welcome with warm greeting, a hand shake and smile. This was perfection. A job well done! Steve Stillwell President Pickups Limited, Orange County Chapter steve@pickupslimited.com 2 www.pickupslimited.com 3

From what I have been told, the story of the Cherries” goes back much farther than I do. My first introduction to these gut bombs was at the Western Nationals in 2003. We were all sitting out in the eve- ning and Dale Beverley thought it would be a good idea to have a movie night. Of course a warm summer evening next to a river brought on a ton of mosquitoes. NOT TO FEAR, WALT WAS HERE and out came the Cherries. I really don’t remember if they became a repellent or if we just didn’t care after a few minutes but they sure were good. .tw

Fast Forward to 2006 during the Super Tour to Knoxville when Bill Lee comes pounding at my door in Santa Rosa NM. He gives me this jar of Cherries and tells me that it is now my job to keep them cold for the rest of the trip. I didn’t remember 2003 at the time (just like most of the ‘60’s) so Ed and I just started munching away. Who knew! We slept like babies.

Who knows when and where it actually started but for me, one thing is for sure. This magic blend of maraschino cherries (with stems) and some old fashion HOOCH that Walt Pocock passed on to me sure has brought friends together over the years with lots of laughs and memories. It makes for a great BBQ charcoal lighter too!

The best kept secret of th eF-100 Western Nationals is out Friday cruise and dinner. This year we were guests at the Wally Parks NHRA Museum in Pomona and were also the featured group at Ruby’s weekly cruise in Whittier where over 200 vehicles were on display. Plan to join us next year!

Last I’d like to thank all my fellow club members who make this show work. Without everyone’s help it would not be what it has become. Congratulations to all the winners, and we will see you all next year, June 22, 2013. The full story of the 2012 event is here for everybody to look back on with fond memories so enjoy! Until next year, Ed

Editor’s Ramblings...
thoughts and memories by Chris Travers
What can be said about a show like the 30th F-100 Western Nationals that somebody has not already said? Fantastic, interesting, outstanding, one-of-a-kind, over the top, and who knows what else. One thing for sure is that it is always memorable. For me the memories are often about a specific vehicle or two, what the weather was like on the day of the event, who had a mechanical problem and things like that but the people that attend are always at the top of my list. I often think back on the great people that I have met through events like the F-100 Western Nationals and get a big smile on my face. The memories always put me in my own “Happy Place”. • The good times of visiting with members from the other chapters of Pickups Limited and thinking that it sure would be great if we could get together more often • Seeing some of our long distance friends Will, Lynette, Chuck, and Shirley from Arizona • Welcoming our many vendors from near and far, reflecting on the sacrifices and stress they make to be with us. • Talking to Bill Lee on the phone is never the same is seeing him in person. Without Bill flagging me down one year at Cruisin for a Cure saying “YOU GOTTA PARK WITH US” I would have never found you guys... so yes, I’m his fault! • Meeting those that traveled from another country for the weekend to be with us like this years Long Distance Hauler Robert Nieto from Guanajuato, Mexico. THAT’S 1597.4 miles! (or 27 hr 37 min with traffic) How could a group of thoughts and memories about these people not put you in a happy place? Impossible My thoughts also go out to long time F-100 Western Nationals attendees and members of Pickups Limited’s San Diego Chapter Brad and Jackie Romaine. Jackie has been battling cardiac problems for some time and experienced another episode as they were entering the gates to the show last week. Brad rushed her to the nearby Kaiser Hospital where they stabilized her. At last report she had been discharged and was doing fine but please keep these good folks in your thoughts.
