Main Street was awash with light from the Palladium billboard April 10, heralding Pulse Magazine’s Worcester Music Awards throughout the city’s downtown. DJ Reckless took the stage to kick things off, tearing through his provided a perfect backdrop as people began to step up to the bar and prepare for an evening of music appreciation, enjoyment and fun.
Pulse’s 2013 Sexiest Bartenders, did a fantastic job spicing up the ceremony. After the welcoming address, Massachusetts country artist Ashley Jordan took the stage. Jordan and company did an incredible job performing their hometown brand of folksy pop-country. When she took the stage, the house was packed and everyone ready to soak in some live music. Jordan herself has
For years, the Worcester Music Awards have been a great way for area musicians and talent to garner recognition for their hard work and dedication. This year was no different, and The Palladium added a certain rock ’n’ roll sensibility, giving a rock-club vibe to the evening.

After DJ Reckless’ set, Mark Veau, of WXLO and WORC-FM, stepped up to the podium to welcome attendees to the Worcester Music Awards. Veau did a standout job presenting throughout the night, obviously enjoying himself. He utilized a perfect combination of humor and class, which was exactly what the event called for. Not to say that he didn’t have any help ~ Amanda Curry, one of
jazz, swing and rock. A bit later, Day One stepped up to keep the tempo and certainly did not disappoint. A hip-hop collective of sorts, the group had the energy of a wild tiger, rendering it impossible to take your eyes off of the stage. The MCs were lively, and the lyricism was second to none. It’s always a treat to see hip-hop backed with a talented live band; the guitar leads throughout were

certainly appreciated. Kung Fu Grip rounded out the night and made perfect sense for the tail end of the evening. Its blend of pop-punk, rock and alternative covers, including a great Jimmy Eat World cover, suits them well, and the band did a great job of making sure no one will soon forget the festivities. With categories ranging from Best Musical Act to Best Live Venue and Sexiest Musician, everything was covered here. There were plenty of repeat winners and some new surprises, as well. A Ton of Blues, for instance, took the Best Blues/R&B Act award for the third year running. “It was just as cool the third time around as it Scott Leblanc on the award trifecta. “It really just hard and has a fan base and they know how to One of the evening’s performers, Ashley Jordan, said. “Shocked and amazed. The award was accepted by Ricciuti’s best friend, Roger Lavallee, who said, “I can’t even begin to describe what Scott has given us. He Ricciuti was a great musician and beloved friend to many, playing a huge part in the Worcester music scene, performing with Huck and Pistol Whipped, as well as performing solo. He has been described as the type of person who would respect from local musicians. The entire evening was something special and will certainly be remembered by all of those in attendance, unless a few too many Pabst Blue Ribbons were enjoyed, and it held something for everyone. The ideals of the Worcester community were a running theme, and there is something about seeing such a diverse group of people come together for one night, relating over music and togetherness, that seems to put everything in perspective. The Worcester Music Awards captured that with an awards ceremony that sets out to bring the community together for something we can all appreciate ~ great music that comes from our own backyard. Central Mass Film Fest goes steampunk By Alana Gordon
Bringing steampunk to Worcester feels like a dream come true for me; doing it as part of the Central Mass Film Festival feels like winning the lottery. I’m Alana Gordon, and as a local photographer in the Worcester community, I’ve always found myself gravitating toward the arts. Film, music or photography ~ they’ve all grabbed my attention. That’s why I’m so proud that we’ve found a way to fuse them all together in a three-day festival.

We feel that the intriguing world of steampunk culture perfectly complements this eclectic celebration, which blends local Worcester history with a collective, creative expression of modern-day life
The Central Mass Film Festival was established more than a year ago by Future Focus Media directors, Dee Wells and Matt Feinstein. They have since been joined by Kristen Lucas, Surya Saraswathi, James Lewis, Scott Fair and myself. the audience for their works and to broaden the access point for consumers to movies and documentaries ~ all from local movie-makers. The making of
‘FADING AWAY’ ~ the music video By Ashley Jordan The following week, we completed the location shots in Haverhill. We literally took over the house for an entire day ~ there was a full makeup/hair staff, four
year ago because I was feeling sad and helpless as I watched a friend battle an eating disorder and depression. I wanted to share how it felt through the eyes of a friend or family member who simply doesn’t know what to do, seeing their loved one fade away. After I wrote the song, it made me feel very emotional to play it, so I tucked it away for a few months. One night, I played it for a friend, and she asked me to perform it at my next show. So I did … and the reaction I got was overwhelming. So many people came up to me and shared their own personal stories and told me how much the song had resonated with them. So, I decided I needed to record this song and do my

But in my case, I was totally set on who I wanted to perform in my music video. by my best friend MacKenzie Klem (from my hometown of Harvard), who is an amazing actor and currently studying theater at Keene State. I have always I would have Kenzie be the key actor because I have always admired her work. Also, when I envisioned the family sitting around the table, I knew who those actors should be, as well. We have some lifelong family friends who have a lot of acting and theater experience, and I knew they’d be perfect for the roles of family members. Since they really are a family, it would feel and look like a real family. So Maura, Jon and Molli Wallace, of Westminster, took on the tough role of being the family in crisis. I personally had some acting scenes during the shoot ~ when I visit my friend
in my head, and then, he added his creative ideas. For instance, when I played my guitar for the video, I envisioned candles with a family sitting awkwardly around a dining room table (and the elephant in the room is the fact that no one can talk about the problems going on around them). I could see the father and mother arguing, the girl alone in her room in despair, the parents banging on the door. Anthony shared his expertise about camera angles and lighting and other details that would best convey the feeling and timing within the song. Location, time of day, objects in the room, wardrobe … everything needed to be considered. After a lot of talking and collaborating, it was up to Anthony to produce a script pulling all our ideas together. Making a script is a very detailed process that to happen for the video in terms of cameras, lighting, actors, timing, etc. From

I was in awe of how smoothly everything went and how comfortable we all felt working together. If it’s a good working relationship, I think you end up feeling

Alcoa: Derek Archambault of Defeater’s new(ish) side project By Alex Kantarelis
Hardcore music tends to have very close-minded fans. They like their songs aggressive, with mosh pits, sing-alongs and screaming vocals. When Defeater burst onto the scene in 2008, vocalist Derek Archambault was well aware of what hardcore was supposed to sound like, having been a lifelong fan. But his approach to being the front man was different. It started with the storyline the lyrics told, which stood apart from the “you stabbed me in the back, and now, I’m going to scream about
While Defeater’s style has its own unique qualities, it is still a hardcore band writing hardcore songs. As the writing process developed, the band added one acoustic song to the mix. As the band began touring relentlessly, that song became one of its most requested songs; halfway Massachusetts band Energy, Archambault started bringing an acoustic guitar on stage, and the

Archambault would write a few songs here and there but never really did much with them, and he compared those songs to earlier Bright Eyes and Dashboard Confessional. As Defeater became his main band, many of those old Alcoa songs were

the exception of Warped Tour, Alcoa will mostly play locally, since Archambault is so busy with Defeater’s touring schedule. ON CD Intronaut ~ Habitual Levitations (Instilling Words with Tones) By Jennifer Russo There is a low and soft continual hum, like thousands of drones working in their hive, which underlies Intronaut’s fourth full-length album. The sound invokes suspense, as the listener awaits the inevitable explosive burst of energy and full-out metal madness, but it doesn’t happen that way. Instead, we remain sitting on a roller coaster that has reached the apex before the drop … and then, lingers there … and then, stops completely. We are left with a heightened heartbeat, wondering what to do next. It’s a dream come true for the daredevil. Habitual Levitations, which was released March 19, has received nothing but good feedback ~ and with good reason. It is completely unexpected, especially if you have heard any of Intronaut’s previous albums. This record takes an unconventional approach to discovering the music at its core ~ an art form that can be experimented with,

Wormtown 35 th anniversary show celebrates Worcester music scene

PULSE Mad Girl’s Love Song: Sylvia by Andrew Wilson By Stephanie Monahan Sylvia Plath was only 30 when she committed suicide in 1963. Her story has been told in movies and books. A gifted writer who seemed to have it all ~ a successful literary career, a husband and two kids ~ was, in fact, haunted by her own dark thoughts. Andrew Wilson’s new biography takes a look at Plath’s life before she was any of those things, at her life before she met her husband, the poet Ted Hughes.
On May 11, celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Worcester music scene founded in 1978 that became known as Wormtown. Five bands, whose members are all key players in this important piece of local history, will convene at Ralph’s Diner on Grove Street for a night of rock ’n’ reminiscing. The Commandos got their start as teenagers in the late ’70s and will be kicking off the night. Formed by Brian Hopper and Jeff Crane in the suburbs of Worcester, they ran their own underage club in a basement for themselves and their friends who were too young to enter the city’s nightspots. Many people blamed Hughes for Sylvia Plath’s spiral into suicide. They had a volatile relationship, and he left her for another woman a few months before her death. However, Wilson explores the troubles that had tormented her since her childhood, growing up in Shirley, then in Wellesley. When she is 8, her father dies. At 14, she begins to cut herself and battle with bouts of depression. She keeps a diary and writes poetry, much of which explores the dark themes for which she later becomes famous. Wilson reveals a young Plath that is anxious, a perfectionist and already using sleeping pills at 17. Plath also struggles with a fact she can’t change: She is a woman in the 1950s, and this comes with certain expectations. She’s supposed to get married and have kids, a life she dreads even as a teen. She craves freedom in all aspects of her life; she wants to go to college and be a writer. In 1950, she becomes a freshman at Smith. But living her dream isn’t enough to calm the

On the hunt for a delectable night out with coworkers or the perfect bachelorette party event? Stop the search! Spank! The Fifty Shades Parody is coming to the Hanover Theatre on May 12 and 13 and promises to have audiences rolling in the aisles with its hilarious script and talented cast. If you were one of the few who escaped the lightning-fast popularity of the 50 Shades of Grey books, we’ll bring you up to speed. In 2011, British author E. L. James began writing this best-selling trilogy, which traces the relationship between an innocent young college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young business tycoon, Christian Grey. The books are possibly most well-known for being packed with erotic scenes that involve bondage, dominance and submission. Mixed with naughty humor and great musical numbers, the parody of this tantalizing story is ready to be enjoyed by theater-goers. Actress Michelle based on Anastasia Steele, and she can’t wait to hit the Worcester stage. “Spank! follows the plot of [50 Shades of Grey] some of the things that happen in the book, then we, as actors, take that and heighten it even more. It’s a show for people who have read the book, but it’s also for people who just want to enjoy a good
show. According to Vezilj, the cast recently played to a sold-out house at Boston’s Wilbur Theatre and the the stage, the women screamed with delight. And the thrill doesn’t end when the curtain drops! The show’s characters are all available for pictures in the lobby at the end of each performance. Vezilj is perfect as Tasha Woode, but at the time
of her audition, she was unfamiliar with the book. Having just gone through a break-up, the former gymnast-turned-singer/actress was not emotionally called back for the part, Vezilj devoured the storyline in a matter of two days.
“But I went to the audition and was just willing to play and to try anything. The director saw something in me and said he

In recent years, choosing a draft beer in the Worcester area has become much easier … just ask if they have anything Wormtown on tap. Wormtown Brewery’s IPAs are spicier and pack a bitter kick that’s always a delight. Knowing that the product is local makes the experience all the better, but really, Wormtown’s wide range of recipes hold their own anywhere. So when someone mentioned dinner at Peppercorns Grille, I had something to anticipate for the rest of the workday ~ after all, this is the very home of Wormtown Brewery! When we arrived, I went right into the lounge area to view the brewery’s gleaming tanks through a large window.
An advantage of center seating is that one is able to view several tables at a glance. When my companion noticed that we were the only table without bread, he asked Josh why. The reasoning for this couldn’t be simpler: Only ask yourself wishing for a crust to sop up that last trace of tasty marinara. Our meal soon moved on to its entree course. My Grilled Salmon harkened back to the school of Architectural Cuisine, that golden age of foodstacking. A generous portion of golden-tinged salmon was nestled on a salad of mesclun greens
Moments later, I was called back to the foyer because we were being seated at one of the dining by booths, but when you’re seated in the center, it feels as if you’re on display. On this mid-week evening, the place was packed with parties of all ages: families with energized children and older folk regaling each other with stories of dining experiences past. Josh, our server, introduced himself and presented menus. When it came time to choose one of their beers, I decided to go for the darkest end of Wormtown’s spectrum and ordered a glass of Tennessee Tat’s. After a scan of Peppercorns’ appetizers, we considered the Risotto Balls; Josh assured us that, with four pieces, they were ideal for sharing.

and moist on the inside. For an additional taste dimension, it was schmeared with a vinaigrette of roasted Roma tomatoes. Over this was tossed a handful of fried onion rings. In recent years, I’ve lost my fondness for them, so I was keen to foist ~ I mean, share ~ my rings. Unfortunately, my friend reported them uncrunchy and uninspired. No problem, the salmon really didn’t require a deep-fried topping. My companion made his evening an all-rice event by following up the arancini appetizer with Seafood Risotto. roasted tomato broth that provided the primary layer of depth and lavish complexity. He reported an abundance of seafood ~ scallops, shrimp and lobster. The forkful of rice that I managed to snag was delicious. When it was time for dessert, Josh returned with a tray
from the fryer. Inside, they were stuffed with a blend of in-house, and I was intrigued by the one with chocolate served standing in a pool of zesty, fresh marinara sauce and topped with a scattering of shredded Parmesan. Future dining note: Peppercorns’ marinara was so tasty, I wouldn’t hesitate to order any entree made with it. Meanwhile, Josh returned with my Tennessee Tat’s. For those who have fond memories of the Italian restaurant that was here previously, let’s just say you won’t believe the transformation. The owners have created a hip, urban dining spot, using brick walls and a pleasing color palette. Try it out More Piccolo. It appears that John Piccolo, owner/chef at Piccolo’s on Shrewsbury Street, will be opening another venture soon. This time, Piccolo is opening a small sandwich shop on lower Belmont Street. The site was formerly a D’Angelo’s before becoming an Asian restaurant ~ Lava Rock ~ for about one month last year. Name change. The Piccadilly Bar & Grill on Shrewsbury Street has changed its name to Paparizzi Restaurant. The new menu will feature more Italian dishes and keep some of the old favorites. This is a great location on Shrewsbury Street with plenty of parking and reasonable prices. The restaurant will also be opening an outdoor dining area. You design the menu. Worcester’s award-winning uber-chef, Albert Maykel of EVO, is redoing his menu and is asking for help from his customers. Maykel’s will release his new menu at the end of the summer. The Flying Rhino on Worcester’s Shrewsbury Street recently opened its outdoor deck and at the same time, celebrated its 14th year in business. So how do Paul Barber and his wife Melina, owners of the Rhino, celebrate? They unveiled their new seasonal menu. Chef Chris O’Harra, who took over the range at the Rhino at the end of last year, has created a summer menu that emphasizes light, fresh and seasonal foods. Use the Wayback Machine, Mr. Peabody. A new burger franchise, Jake’s Wayback Burgers, recently opened in the Walmart Plaza on Route 146 in Worcester. This is the third franchise in Massachusetts. Local owner is Dario DiPieratino, of Grafton. Another reason to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Ole Mexican restaurant on Worcester’s Water Street was given a liquor license recently. We hear that this place makes the best Margarita in town, but we will let you know for sure. It doesn’t get more perfect than this. The Perfect Game, also on Water Street, will be expanding and adding an additional 2,300 square feet of space. The Erlich bothers will open the Harding Street side of the building, calling it One Fifty Seven. They will be using lots of glass and a garage door to bring the outside in. Hey, someday there may be a water view.

Narragansett Imperial Bohemian Pilsner By Kerry Cyganiewicz
When thinking of a pilsner, most people think of a mass-market American beer. A few think of a more premium European offering. Pilsner is generally a clear, light-colored lager with little hop character ~ low in alcohol and easy to drink. Narragansett’s Imperial Bohemian Pilsner is easy to drink, but the similarities to a typical pilsner end there. Narragansett recently released its Imperial Bohemian Pilsner, part of its limited-edition Private Stock series. This beer will weigh in at 8.6 percent ABV (alcohol by volume), about twice that of a normal pilsner beer, hence the Imperial designation. This brew is made with pale malt, pilsner malt, wheat malt and Cara Blonde malt from Belgium. It’s then bittered with Northern Brewer hops and Hallerteau hops and is also double-dry hopped with Hallerteau. Much like the 122nd Anniversary Imperial IPA, this will be available for a limited time in 22-ounce bomber bottles and on draft. Here is my take on it: Appearance: It has a copper hue, darker than a regular pilsner and is cloudy
Aroma: Some light, bready, malty tones mixed with some fruit from the hops. Taste:
Mouthfeel: Slightly heavier than a pilsner but creamy smooth with perfect carbonation. Overall: I enjoyed this very much, as did some friends that tend to gravitate toward mass-market beers. So, after a lifetime of intrigue, years of schooling and a sprouting career in the industry, here I am ~ proud owner of a fashion design and retailing degree with a concentration in merchandising ~ here to offer my insight to the readers of Pulse. The topic: trends ~ how to wear them, fun, impromptu topics along the way. Art & Culture It’s a quiet Sunday morning on a side street in Worcester, and while many others are sleeping, a dozen dancers are practicing to tell the tales of issues that affect people today. Far away from the glitz and glamour portrayed on shows like Dance Moms and So You Think You Can Dance, dancers come from studios across central Massachusetts to make up Twisted Techniques Dance Company. While some of the dancers are as young as 12, many of them are adults who juggle a career with their passion for dance, said Twisted Techniques founder, Kristy Fitzpatrick. “The majority of [dancers in] this company are people who have have danced throughout high school and college, and now, they are grown up and they still want to dance seriously. There aren’t a lot of

An art gallery for the 21st century By Jason Savio Art galleries often get an unfair rap. They’re usually stereotyped as being stuffy ~ strict places of minimal adventure, where everyone is expected to conform to the uncomfortable suit-and-tie wardrobe. A Worcester native and Mass Art alumnus, Matthew Foster, wants to change that. The owner of The Foster Gallery, 51 Union St., Worcester, Foster is bringing the art gallery into the 21st century by combining art and technology. Through his own series of self-produced podcasts on ArtsyFartsyPodcast.com and his posting of Foster Gallery showings online, Foster hopes to expand interest and reach a new audience for the artists in a laid-back approach that is welcoming to all. “One of my pet peeves for the last couple of years is that when you search for an art podcast, there seems to be two versions that are extreme from each comic book art, but more about comics in general, and then on the far other end, there’s the National Gallery of Art that puts up a professor who talks for two hours straight about tombstones in France.
