To go upward, we all need to go inward first.

About Kanchana:

S

elf discovery is an underrated exercise that is starting to gain momentum globally. I am a yogi at heart and have figured out that to create lasting peace in every facet of our lives we need to look inside at who we are and what makes us happy first in order to lead a life where we and those around us thrive. I hope my experiences and advice in this short article will help you lead a more prosperous life.

Going inward, has been one of my guiding principles in engineering my journey through life, particularly since I qualified as a yoga instructor 8 years ago. While I don’t physically teach anymore, the practice of ensuring a healthy mind and body has supported my various ventures from writing books and running workshops on wellness to philanthropic projects to running the African office of a global strategy company. Yoga and meditation brings energy, revitalization, clarity and creativity to my life and I am probably the biggest cheerleader of these practices. Early on in life I realised that I was different. While girls enjoyed playing with dolls, I enjoyed riding a bicycle and climbing trees. While everyone was talking about marriage and children, I was talking about saving humanity. While success for others equalled the latest car, mine meant how many lives I have impacted in a positive way. This realisation did not always make me feel comfortable or confident in a world that is driven by mostly the material aspects. But learning about what made me tick, and having the freedom to express my thoughts, gave me the impetus to continue swimming against the current. I am a student at the School of Practical Philosophy for over 7 years and continue to be in awe of the words of the wise that are still relevant today. Most pertinent for society and the driver for me to continue the pursuit on my journey inwards has been Plato’s clear instruction to “know thyself.” When we know who we are, we know clearly what we need to do, who we should do it with and most importantly we learn what brings peace rather than drama to us. When we don’t know ourselves we are constantly in a state of flux, unclear and reacting rather than operating from a position of strength, truth and knowledge. This has been my experience of yoga, meditation and philosophy all of which together with exercise are the foundation techniques I use to ensure that I stay on top of my game. We all have the power to do many things with excellence and focus, but we find ourselves stressed, tired and overwhelmed because we have not found the right coping mechanisms. To be fit, open to life and all it has to offer, you need to flow with it. Over the years I have enjoyed many brilliant successes when I was in flow, like being named one of the Mail & Guardian Top 200 Young South African (Civil Society category – 2012) for my work on the philanthropic project, Saris for Good Karma to being the co-author on a book to the other side of the coin where I really was not in flow and enjoyed the experience of a dismal failure with an ethnic hair brand I created.

www.pulsemagsa.wix.com/pulsemagsa

But what I have learnt is that every single failure makes me stronger and more determined to succeed. I am grateful for both because we grow when we make mistakes and we also grow when we succeed. So never see failure as a reason to quit. Some of the greatest failures in the world have lead to the best inventions that society has ever seen. So I have learnt to love failure as much as success. Remember though to fail fast. When something is going downhill and you can see that it is spiralling with you in it, jump ship and start again and quickly. Don’t get down and stay down for too long. This life is a short one to do all the things we can do, so be determined, but don’t be attached. My attitude and determination to make things work I get from my dad, who has taught me the value of putting in as much effort as possible into everything, no matter how small or big. Consistency will ultimately bring you to the outcome you desire. From the most humble beginnings on a farm in Demat, near Chatsworth he worked consistently to ensure that our family would be in an environment to thrive, and we did. And this would not have been possible had it not been for my mum who is the biggest supporter of what my dad did in order to get us all to where we are today. It is all about team work and having shared values and vision. So while I am a born leader, I love bringing people together for a shared cause for good. Never believe that anything you do in life is by coincidence because indeed there is a reason for everything that happens. After failing dismally at launching the hair brand, I quickly reverted to what I know best, marketing, strategy and events. But I knew that this time round I would do things differently, learning from past mistakes, I envisioned a company that would encompass philanthropy, marketing and be global as I want to impact the world. Not even 6 months after what I considered the biggest failure in my life I was met by the partners at Innate Motion Worldwide Group to open their African office and drive social change through brands. If that is not an example of how our thoughts and words govern the outcomes of our lives, I don’t know what is. So if I can leave you with my 5 point formula for success: 1. Always be clear with your intent – this will come from knowing yourself 2. Ask for what you want – and be imaginative, anything is possible 3. Believe that it will happen- without any doubt 4. Get fit and healthy – you can’t do anything if you are sick! 5. And most important - My Mantra GOYA (get of you’re a@$e) and DO IT DAILY – Because Nobody else can do your life, but YOU! Miss Earth South Africa 2014 announced

lze Saunders from Klerksdorp was announced Miss Earth South Africa 2014 at a luncheon hosted by Tsogo Sun at the Palazzo Hotel in Johannesburg, the official home of Miss Earth South Africa. Saunders is 23 years old and a BA Communications graduate who is currently studying further at the University of the North West. Her excitement and pleasure at the announcement is born from a burning desire to help people and to make a difference. The Honourable Minister of Environmental Affairs Ms. Edna Molewa spoke about the importance of women in the community and their role in environmental advocacy noting that, “this organisation is nurturing a new generation of environmental activists with a passion for their cause – infused with a sense of empathy that is indeed rare among the young people of today.” “By giving hope and inspiring change in others, my life has been enriched. It is an experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life as it has enabled me to create practical projects, which have improved the lives of people. To give inspires me,” said Saunders. This young, dynamic woman will represent South Africa at the international Miss Earth competition to take place on 29 November in the Philippines, South East Asia. The 13 finalists are vibrant young women have been very involved in their communities, at schools and in supporting the organisation’s national campaigns around food security, energy efficiency and greening programmes. The Runners up are from equally diverse backgrounds, with the first runner up being Steffani Alexander a 22 years old BCom student that is passionate about people and empowerment through education. The second runner up is Michillay Brown also 22 years old, is an Environmental Science and Management student who aims to serve; impact and positively influence the lives of those around her. Roxanne Watson, the third runner up, is a 22 year Page 8

old qualified Nutritionist from the tropical coastal province of KwaZulu Natal, who is completing her Masters in Consumer Science: Food and Nutrition while also lecturing. “It is rewarding to see the growth and influence of the Miss Earth South Africa programme, over a period of more than a decade. We aim to continue to empower young women with the knowledge and platform to create a sustainable difference in our plight to combat the destruction of our natural heritage,” said Catherine Constantinides, Executive Director of the Miss Earth South Africa. The event was emceed by Darren Maule, a wellknown performer, who is equally comfortable in front of a microphone, a camera or a live audience. Maule has been a familiar name and face on the South African entertainment circuit for over 20 years. His entertaining linking of the event was coloured by the who’s who that attended; from socialite Edith Venter Schwarts, to songbird Bianca Le Grange and captains of industry who were in attendance to share in the big announcement. Former Miss Earth South Africa winners Kayan Leung, Ashanti Mbanga, Nondyebo Dwingwa, and Nancy Rebelo also joined in the festive spring affair at the Palazzo. This year’s programme was hotly contested, with hundreds of entries received earlier in the year; the organisation took 60 young ladies through to the regional finalist round. Finalists were announced in Cape Town in August, while celebrating South African women. Constantinides said, “The finalists demonstrated clear leadership qualities, creative thinking, strength of mind and of character, and most importantly, a passion for making a sustainable difference in their communities. The programme has been exciting and challenging and whilst ensuring that these young women have made an impact on the communities around them, they have also delivered a service and compassion. The participants

made an effort to inspire and educate individuals, schools, communities, corporate South Africa and policymakers to consider the environment and the challenges that we face as a nation and indeed as a continent.” As Saunders now prepares for a year of excitement, travel and a very demanding schedule, she will be working closely with both the Department of Environmental Affairs and Department of Tourism. During the remainder of Heritage month she takes a strong message against Rhino Poaching with her upcoming trip to South East Asia, a critical topic on our national agenda as South African’s, especially as we celebrate Tourism month, Heritage month and International Rhino Day. The newly announced Miss Earth South Africa will focus on Sustainable and Eco Tourism as a key theme linked to the international event and a theme that will now be taken forward by the organisation, linking to responsible tourism and sustainability. SA’s green girl drives away with a Hybrid vehicle compliments of IMPERIAL Toyota for the year of her reign. She will receive prizes from David Green Eyewear, leading South African designers Werner Dey, Gerrit Pienaar and Simon Rademan, gifts from Healing Earth, Baobab Oil, Crystal Forum and Jenni Gault. Her hair treatments and styling will be sponsored by leading Sandton-based salon, Bijan Boutique Hair and Elchim. This coupled with dental care from Sandton Dental Studio, will ensure that Miss Earth SA will cater for her smile, with Camelot taking care of all her beauty needs. Earth Pro-Biotics and Carbon Track will equip her for a greener lifestyle in her day-to-day living, while SWEAT1000 the new exercise experience that has taken the country by storm, will keep the ambassadors fit and strong to tackle their exciting journey ahead. Samsonite will ensure that she travels in style both locally and internationally. Valpre Spring Water will keep her hydrated and on the go, while catering to all her water needs.

Giving from the heart: Create meaningful, personalized gifts that are quick and easy to make It’s that time of year to recognize the important people in your life. From Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to weddings and graduations, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate your loved ones. But this year, don’t fall into the trap of giving generic cards and gifts that are often discarded. It’s easier than ever to create a special present that comes from the heart, for any occasion. Personalization is a leading gifting trend, meaning more people are skipping generic gift options and creating sentimental presents that instantly become cherished keepsakes. Gifts that convey meaning and embrace special memories are sure to make a lasting impression. Even for the most time-starved among us, the following quick and easy ideas are guaranteed to make your loved one smile:

One-of-a-kind card: Make her blush or brighten his day with a customized card that features fun photos and a touching message. Creating a wonderful, one-of-a-kind creation takes just a few minutes when you take your camera or photo card to the nearest KODAK Picture Kiosk. In various formats and sizes these photo cards are very affordable and have loads of sentimental value. Choose from tons of exclusive modern, creative layouts from designers like Bonnie Marcus to delight every parent, grad or brideto-be in your life.

Personalized flowerpot: Beautiful blooms and warm weather are the perfect pairing, and giving flowers is always a classic gift. But why not take it one step further and make a personalized flowerpot that can be used season after season? Perfect for Mom, Grandma or anyone with a green thumb, flowerpots can be decorated with a favourite photo and then painted for a one-of-a-kind homemade design. Finish by adorning with a colourful bow that matches the beautiful blooms held within the pot.

Photo collages: A carefully crafted photo collage of special images can make a stunning gift that tugs at the heartstrings and only takes minutes to make. Thanks to advanced printing technology, you can skip the scissors and paste and create a professional-looking collage for less at your local photo printer. For mothers, add photos of special family moments from a recent vacation, or for grads, add photos from different grades as way to reflect on how quickly time flies. Place the collage in a frame and pair it with a card for a gift that will be cherished long after the party is over.

Creative handprints: Every person’s hand and fingerprints are unique - use them to create crafty gifts that convey the special love your family shares for each other. Hand impressions in clay stepping stones make unique presents that can be placed in a garden or displayed on a shelf. Or, adorn a family picture with a matte featuring the kids’ handprints. Use paint or ink and carefully press hands to the matte so it doesn’t smudge. You might want to try a few times on a practice piece of paper first before adding handprints to the matte. Choose one colour or let kids each pick their own favourite hue to represent their unique personalities.

Photo blocks: Impress loved ones young and old by creating special photo blocks that display favourite images from the past year. Start by buying wood blocks at your local craft store. Usually four or five is a good amount. Then order prints - anytime, anywhere by downloading the free My KODAK Moments App, which makes it easy to access images from your phone or social media sites like Facebook or Instagram. Once materials are collected, cut each photo to the block size and attach with spray adhesive. Add a special message on the corner of each block with a marker or stamp. Some people write out “mama,” “love” or another special word to add a personalized touch to this easy-to-make project.

Putting herself first: Easy tips to help women to focus on their own health

HE A

scheduling a general check-up might discover a health issue that doesn’t have any symptoms. Keep your skin looking healthy with sunscreen. The sun’s rays can cause early signs of aging and even melanoma. Give your skin the protection it needs while still enjoying the outdoors by using a sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 15. Be sure to apply the sunscreen frequently if you’re planning to be outside for an extended period of time. And if you want to look tanned, consider using a tanning lotion or spray instead. Raver recommends keeping the sunscreen in your makeup bag or drawer as a reminder to apply it every morning before applying makeup. Use products that address health and beauty.

Putting herself first: Easy tips to help women to focus on their own health As the caretaker of the family, sometimes mom is so busy watching over her spouse and children, she forgets to take care of herself. This is the perfect time of year for women to focus on their own health, especially as schedules slow down for the summer months. Taking a moment to pause and think about ways to improve her overall health is the best way to make certain a woman has the strength and energy to also care for her family, says Kim

Raver, mother and actress on FOX’s hit show, “24.” Plus, concentrating on health can help women achieve a beautiful look, looking her best at all times of the year. Raver has the following three tips to help women improve their overall health: Schedule those doctor appointments. During the busy school year, it’s easy to forget about visiting the dermatologist, general practitioner, gynaecologist, dentist and eye doctor. Even if you don’t have a medical concern,

Smiling has been found to help lower the heart rate and can reduce the body’s reaction in stressful situations, according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Kansas. A healthy mouth is an important part of a healthy body. Colgate Total Advanced Whitening toothpaste gives women a whiter and healthier smile. You’ll find yourself smiling often just to show off how beautiful it is, which can also give your health a boost. Showing off your healthy smile with the Colgate Total Advanced Whitening toothpaste may even boost your confidence. Adding these three simple steps to your routine this summer won’t be a big disruption to your already busy mom schedule. Plus, they can help you improve your healthy lifestyle so you can handle the stress and hectic happenings of the upcoming school year with a smile on your face.

Re-ignite those romantic urges With the hectic schedules that many women adhere to, it’s not surprising that many feel stressed out or overwhelmed. The responsibilities of juggling a career, a family and obligations as a wife and mother can be nerve-wracking, and for many women sex is not on their mind. While this lack of desire may be the result of the day’s stresses, in a number of cases it may be the symptom of a bigger issue. Nearly one in two non-menopausal women ages 30 to 50 say they have experienced low sexual desire at some point in their lives, and 61 percent of these women felt distressed by it, according to a new survey supported by HealthyWomen and Palatin Technologies, which is developing an on-demand treatment for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), a common type of female dysfunction otherwise known as low libido. HSDD is characterized by a lack of sexual thoughts or desires that cannot be explained by another medical condition. Though HSDD has been diagnosed for over 30 years, the vast majority of women surveyed had never heard of the condition. But HSDD is very real and, if not recognized, can ruin relationships. “Sex is an important part of a romantic relationship, so a lack of intimacy can sometimes create tension within an otherwise healthy partnership,” says Beth Battaglino, R.N., president and CEO of HealthyWomen. “Women who avoid sex because of low sexual desire may not realize that this could be a sign of a medical issue. Most women don’t know what female sexual dysfunction is, or understand that conditions like HSDD are real and can be a serious concern for them as well as their partner.” Survey results support this idea, as 85 percent of surveyed women said they felt low sexual desire would hurt their relationship with their partner and 66 percent felt it would impair communication. Perhaps more concerning is that nearly half of those who had identified themselves as Page 14

having HSDD blamed themselves for the condition, and 38 percent said it made them question their worth in their relationship. “It’s important for women living with HSDD or some other form of female sexual dysfunction to not blame themselves, and they need to feel confident to discuss their concerns with their health care provider and their partner,” Battaglino says. There are currently no approved medications for the treatment of HSDD, yet 92 percent of women surveyed said they would be interested in a treatment for HSDD. The good news is that medications for HSDD are on the horizon. For more information visit www.palatin.com.

Green cleaning ideas that are kind to Mother Nature It’s not necessary to use harsh chemicals and toxins to achieve a cleaner, fresh-smelling home this season. Homemade cleaning products and earth-friendly tactics can help you clean green. Here are green cleaning ideas and a supplies list that will make Mother Nature happy: * Begin by decluttering, which requires no chemicals at all. As you’re disposing of items you no longer need or want, be mindful of ways to keep them out of the waste stream. Donating gently used but no-longerneeded items such as clothing, furniture and books is a great way to reduce waste and cut clutter at the same time. * Clean windows instantly brighten your house inside and out and they’re one of the easiest household cleaning chores to do with natural tools. A simple solution of white vinegar and water (about two tablespoons of vinegar per gallon of water) makes an effective, low-cost and green window cleaner. Spritz on windows using a spray bottle and use newspaper instead of paper towels for a streak-free clean. Don’t like the smell of vinegar? Straight lemon juice works just as well and smells distinctly like spring. * Pull out the white vinegar again to mix up a great floor cleaner that works well on surfaces from hardwood to vinyl to tile. You’ll need to add three or four cups of vinegar to about a gallon of hot water. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil - peppermint or lemon are popular choices - so that when the vinegar aroma evaporates, the wonderful scent of the oil will linger. * Laundering linens is a cornerstone of many cleaning projects. Mass marketed liquids and dryer sheets, however, rely on softening chemicals and petroleum-derived fragrances to impart softness and scent. Try this simple, natural fabric softening recipe from the essential oil experts at Aura Cacia: Ingredients: 1/2 cup vinegar 2 tablespoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon lavender essential oil Directions: Dissolve baking soda in vinegar, stir in lavender and pour into

the water during your washer’s rinse cycle. Line dry clothes for maximum green value. Or, if you must use a dryer, add a wool dryer ball to shorten drying time and soften clothes. To boost the fresh scent of lavender, sprinkle several drops on the dryer ball or on a paper towel and add to the dryer during the cool down cycle. * Prepare a multi-purpose cleaner to help brighten and freshen surfaces throughout your home. Mix two tablespoons of unscented liquid soap with four drops of lemon essential oil and two drops of tea tree essential oil. Pour the mixture into a gallon of warm water. Use this multi-purpose solution with a sponge mop or rag to remove dirt from floors and hard surfaces such as countertops and appliances. * Stock up on natural cleaning supplies such as lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils, baking and washing soda, Borax, white distilled vinegar, spray and squeeze bottles, natural bristle scrubbing brushes, old newspaper, cotton dusting cloths and hemp or jute fibre scrubbing cloths. * Instead of chemical air fresheners that can irritate allergy sufferers, make your own room fresheners using cotton balls soaked in essential oil. Store in decorative ceramic dishes out of reach of children and pets. For bedrooms, lavender is relaxing. Lemon and other citrus oils are invigorating for bathrooms, and cinnamon and clove impart mouth-watering aroma to kitchens.

The Birds and the Bees… and…the Breast!? MOM. I KNOW ABOUT THE BIRDS AND THE BEES…. BUT TELL ME….WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT THIS PAIN IN MY BREAST? For many of us, depending on our cultural backgrounds, the talk about the birds and the bees might be broached cautiously, or not at all in some cultures and don’t even begin to talk about the breasts! At most we would be advised about our bra size and type….probably by the assistant at a department store. For young women in the 21st century, it is a constant challenge, we have to multitask be it at home, at work or both. With information bombarding us via all types of media and of course at our fingertips in this internet era, women can be confused about what information to trust.

lumps are non-cancerous. Ironically, women will rush to their doctors because of breast pain, but delay coming in for painless and possibly cancerous lumps, a generality of course but with a few exceptions, cancerous lumps are initially painless.

fibrocystic change is that it impacts on follow ups, identifying whether complications (inflamed or infected cysts etc) have developed and of course, lets women avoid complacency that all lumps they feel are only fibrocystic. PLEASE!!! Have all lumps assessed on ultrasound even if they occur before your next follow The menstrual cycle, with the hormonal up. effects of oestrogen is the most common cause of breast pain-i.e. cyclical pain that There is an increasing number of younger is premenstrual and menstruation related. women (<35 yrs) being diagnosed with Fibrocystic disease accounts for most breast cancer due, in part to increased cases of non-cyclical pain. use of oral contraception, fertility drugs, lifestyle factors and genetic influence. “Fibro-what?” is the common response to that comment. I prefer not to call it a We are also screening more extensively disease but rather “fibrocystic change” with increased breast awareness and since it effects 40- 60% of women in their cancers are being detected earlier. 30’s and 40’s. Screening involves a breast ultrasound in women under 35 years of age - if they have no risk factors or lumps – otherwise a diagnostic mammogram will be performed. Screening mammography will be a baseline / initial mammogram between the ages of 35-40 and then annually from age 40 onwards.

MASTALGIA What is Mastalgia, what causes it and what should be done about it? Mastalgia is breast pain, either cyclical or non-cyclical (related to menstruation or not) and can make the bravest of us quite fearfull …..could this be cancer?

The mammogram and ultrasound will identify changes associated with fibrocystic disease. Women with such changes should cut down on their smoking (preferrably stop smoking) try some evening primrose oil capsules and reduce their caffeine intake- tea, caffeinated coffee, coke and chocolates oh no!

So ladies, know that Mastalgia is common and often treatable once the diagnosis has been made. Please have it assessed by your doctor! Monthly breast self examination is important. Wearing a comfortable bra (no deformed underwires) and going for your scheduled examinations is also important. I am truly optimistic that we are in an era of change and that women and mothers of the 21st century are going to keep abreast (yes, pardon the pun) of breast health issues and teach their darlings about breast health awareness from a young age, ideally when menstruation starts.

A short course of anti-inflammatories REMEMBER….THE BIRDS, THE BEES AND THE BREASTS!!! The current statistics suggests that will provide relief in active inflammation between eight and nine out of every ten (such as blocked ducts after breast feeding is stopped). The tween years: How to survive as a parent At this age, tweens are discovering who they are and where they fit into the world. They are beginning to socialize with the opposite sex and are defining who they are through the clothes they wear and the music they listen to. They are building a self-image and comparing themselves to others their age. Tweens may be moody, pouting, even tantruming like when they were a toddler. Tweens will sulk and whine as well. Research has shown that this is how tweens communicate their anger, frustration and displeasure with certain situations. “At this stage, patience and understanding are important,” says Dr. Toby Spiegel, assistant professor of forensic psychology at Argosy University, Orange County. Confidence is the key for teens to deal with their emotions effectively. “Keep the lines of communication open. Empathize with their struggles and do not make light of them or laugh because it does not seem catastrophic to you. To a tween, everything is a life-shattering issue.

T

here’s the summer vacation you dream of, happy children playing games, parents relaxing, cheerful grandparents, smooth roads, short lines and easy-to-schedule outdoor sports and activities for the kids. And then there’s the reality, which more closely resembles “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” The film follows the all-American Griswolds as they drive the family station wagon cross-country to visit the Walley World theme park. At one point, Clark Griswold (played by Chevy Chase) faces a mutiny by his “tween” children, who urge an immediate end to the vacation. Tweens, or 10- to 14-year-old individuals “in between” childhood and adolescence, are notorious for mood swings. As tweens begin puberty, they face many challenges, including middle school, social issues, homework, and the stress of having responsibilities. At this stage of development brain and body development changes also occur that they may not understand. These changes are very normal. All tweens have mood swings to a certain extent.

It’s also important to take the time to listen and respect what they are going through. Praise them, making sure that the praise is meaningful and descriptive. Help them build their self esteem. Teach your tween to solve problems by brainstorming with them. Generally your tween should grow out of the moodiness by the time they turn 16. “Staying connected to your child at this time is extremely important,” says Spiegel. “Knowing who their friends are and what they do in school will give you insight into who your child is becoming.” Volunteer at the school, offer to chaperone school events, attend parentteacher conferences and other school functions. At the beginning of the school year obtain the email addresses for your child’s teacher. Send her an email introducing yourself and tell her that you are “hands-on” and appreciate being contacted to partner in your child’s education. “Believe it or not, teachers like to know they can count on the parents regarding meeting their child’s academic needs,” adds Spiegel.

Money talk: Educating the next generation nancial decisions. Before you can educate your kids, make it a priority to educate yourself. Consider online resources as an easy way to expand your own financial knowledge * Educate by example. Teens and tweens often model their behaviours after their parents - both good and bad - particularly when it comes to money. By setting a good example and responsibly managing your own personal finances, you can begin teaching your children without much heavy lifting. While you’re at it, check out steps to better money habits on BetterMoneyHabits.com to continue to build healthy behaviours your children can pick up on. * Talk to your kids.

A

t a certain age, kids stop listening to their parents on all topics except for one. Money.

Yet research shows that this is the one area where teens and tweens actually seek advice from their parents, it’s one many adults avoid due to their own lack of confidence in managing their finances. Whether you’re taking steps to proactively educate your children on money management or they’re confronting you with specific questions, be ready and equipped to help them learn about what’s important. Following the five simple steps below will not only help you brush up on the basics and build your own financial knowledge but better prepare you to teach your kids about managing money responsibly. * Expand your own financial knowledge. A study on financial literacy reveals that 32 percent of adults on average recognize their lack of financial knowledge has led them to make poor fiPage 18

We’ve all made mistakes with money at one time or another, the important thing is that you and your children can learn from them. Begin talking to your children about the financial decisions you’ve made in the past to help spur open, ongoing dialogue about money. Knowledge of your personal financial challenges may prevent your children from facing similar issues and discussing your good decisions provides them with concrete examples to follow. * Offer allowance. Once your children reach an age where you feel they’re comfortable with handling money, you can begin to offer an allowance. Whether it’s rewarding them for completing chores, good behaviour or making straight A’s on their report card, make it clear to them what kind of expenditures the money is for and that they are expected to save some of it. This will likely be your child’s first chance at budgeting and managing money, so it’s important to give them the tools they need in order to be successful. Of course, there are no “one size fits all” answers to your child’s financial questions, but when the questions do come, it’s important to be ready by empowering yourself. It’s critical that parents are confident in their own money management skills in order to teach the next generation. www.pulsemagsa.wix.com/pulsemagsa

yurveda, the 5000 year old medical system, origin of which can be traced back to the Indian subcontinent focuses more on healthy living than treatment of diseases. Ayurveda conjugation of two Sanskrit words Ayus (life) and Veda (related to knowledge), literary means the `Science of Life`. The earliest concept of Ayurveda was put into writing by Veda Vyasa, the famous sage and Shaktavesha avatar of Vishnu, Dhanvantari in Atharvaveda, which is one of the four most ancient books of Indian knowledge, wisdom and culture. Eight disciplines of ayurveda treatment, called Ashtangas are: 1. Kaya Chikitsa (Internal Medicine): Kaya means living human body. This treatment includes all diseases situated in the body. 2. Shalya Tantra (Surgery): Describes about Pre-Operative Procedures, General Procedures, Post-Operative Procedures, Anesthesia and Marma`s (vital points). It also describes about Bandages, Shastra (sharp instruments), Yantras (blunt instruments) and Sutures (stitches). 3. Bhuta Vidya (Psychiatry): Deals with spiritual healing. 4. Shalakya Tantra (Treatment of diseases above the clavicle): It`s a division of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) and Ophthalmology.

7. Vajikarana (Purification of the Genetic Organs): Deals with male and female genetic organs. 8. Rasayana Tantra (Health and Longevity): Deals with prevention of diseases and improving immunity and rejuvenation. The Tridoshas are the primary and essential factors of the human body that govern our entire physical structure and function... the equilibrium of Tridoshas in a body is known as a healthy body and the imbalance of these makes the body unhealthy. Samhitas (the authentic texts of Ayurveda) describes the benefit of Ayurveda like this-Swasthyashya Swasthya Rakshanam, Aturashya Vikara Prashamanancha which means to maintain the health of the healthy, rather than to cure the diseases of the diseased. Ayurveda doesn’t merely treat the affected part but strikes at the whole root cause of a particular disease. The medicinal assets of these resources have been documented by the practitioners and have been used for centuries to treat illness and sustain good health by proper intake of food and living habits blended with‌. Foods for better moods

and 5 more that only bring you down

D

id you know the food you eat can literally make you feel happy or sad? Nutrition is one of the main components of mental health, so it’s important to stock your plate with good food while cutting some of those less beneficial alternatives. “Food can definitely alter your mood,” says Dr. Shoshana Bennett, clinical psychologist, mental health expert, and radio host. “Sometimes the effect is immediate, other times there’s a delay of an hour or so. Over time, the wrong foods can create a continuous foul mood or negative state of mind. Many people still aren’t making the connection between their emotional well-being and what they ate for dinner - or the last 200 dinners.” Bennett explains that certain foods can negatively affect the neurotransmitters in our brains; these chemicals control sleep, appetite, mood and more. Bad foods can also cause inflammation, which may lead to other physical and mental disorders. She recommends eating these five types of food to feel happy, healthy and balanced:

Complex carbohydrates Foods like beans, potatoes and whole grains are necessary for staying upbeat, as the complex carbohydrates they contain help the brain make serotonin, a mood-changing chemical. Without enough complex carbohydrates, a person can become angry and depressed. “The amino acid tryptophan is important for the formation of serotonin,” says Bennett. “Complex carbohydrates help tryptophan cross the blood/brain barrier, thereby increasing the amount of tryptophan in the brain.”

Cold-water fish Salmon, mackerel and sardines are high in the omega-3s that help boost mood. Several studies show that a deficit in omega-3 fatty acids is linked to anxiety and depression. Most people in the U.S. don’t eat enough fresh, cold-water fish, so supplements are required. “It’s important to use omega-3 supplements of pure quality,” says Bennett. “This means knowing where the fish comes from and how the

supplements are manufactured. Nordic Naturals exceeds the highest standards of quality and produces the only omega-3 supplements I put in my body.”

Knowing what foods to skip is just as important as knowing which foods to eat, so Bennett recommends cutting down on these “bad-mood foods”:

Selenium

1. Sugar

“Research shows people with low levels of the mineral selenium have poorer moods, including the tendency toward depression,” Bennett says.

Eating sugar provides a rush of energy, but soon afterward, blood glucose levels drop and lead to low mood and short-temperedness.

Foods rich in selenium include shellfish, tuna, nuts, seeds, fish, pork, chicken and pasta. Bennett cautions that too much of this mineral is not healthy either, and recommends checking with a health care practitioner for guidance before taking selenium as a supplement.

2. Sweeteners Aspartame and other sweeteners can cause depression and insomnia since they block the production of serotonin. If you want a sweetener but are trying to avoid sugar, use stevia or xylitol instead.

Folic acid

3. Processed carbs

A diet too low in folic acids can deplete serotonin. Research suggests that depression can be relieved by taking folate supplements or eating more food containing folate, such as spinach, lentils, garbanzo and other beans, romaine lettuce and broccoli.

Snack foods, white bread, most cereals and pasta contain processed carbs that negatively affect blood sugar levels the same way as sugar.

“Folate is water-soluble, so your body does not store it,” says Bennett. “You need to eat foods regularly that contain it.”

Trans fats are physically and mentally dangerous because they can contribute to depression and other illnesses.

Vitamin D

5. Sodium

Vitamin D-rich foods like eggs, milk, cheese and fatty fish (like tuna) help to activate serotonin. Furthermore, research shows a strong connection between low levels of vitamin D and symptoms of depression.

High sodium can negatively affect the neurological system and contribute to depression and fatigue.

“It hasn’t yet been demonstrated clearly whether low vitamin D levels cause the depression or are a result of depression,” says Bennett. “Either way, consider a blood test to check your vitamin D levels.”

4. Hydrogenated oils

“You don’t have to make major changes all at once,” says Bennett. “It’s often more beneficial if one small, realistic alteration is made at a time. Once you experience the payoff - not just read or hear about them - then it becomes fun!”

You know how to pick out the perfect pair of shoes, what dress to wear and how to accessorize. When it comes to hosting a party, you want everything to be stylish, from the table you set to the food you serve. Here are some tips for “dressing up” your table using style and colour.

Handful of thyme

Get inspired: When starting out, look for an inspiration piece. Select a unique table cloth or find interesting napkins with bright colours and bold patterns. If you’d wear it as a skirt, chances are it will look great on the table.

Salt

Bold bakeware is a must: Make your food and table look good with the right bakeware. Try the new vibrant CW by CorningWare. The line of fashionable and functional bakeware comes in a variety of colours, including Pool Blue, Curry Yellow, Sprout Green, Vermillion Red and Twilight Purple, so you can bring it from the oven straight to your table, no serving dishes needed. When the party is over, the versatile bakeware can go in the fridge or freezer with the leftovers.

Orange zest

Centrepieces to talk about: When it comes to creating a centrepiece, think outside the box. Make a table runner with small wooden crates from a flea market. Turn mason jars into candleholders or add wildflowers for a rustic look. The idea is to be unusual and creative while finding a centrepiece that demonstrates your unique decorating style.

1/2 tablespoon ground pink peppercorn

Setting the table: Approach setting your table like putting together an outfit. Match your colourful CW by CorningWare with your patterned table linens and centrepiece, but keep your plates classic and sophisticated. Try Boutique by Corelle dinnerware; the allwhite colour and embossed design is chic and simple, and makes the rest of the colours pop.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine grated garlic, olive oil, sage and thyme into a food processor and process until smooth. Whisk in maple syrup. Spread half the Kabocha squash in a 1.5 quart CW by CorningWare Medium Baker. Using a pastry brush, thoroughly brush all the squash with the olive oil/maple syrup mixture. Season with salt, pepper, Ras el Hanout and orange zest and roast, covered with foil, for 35 minutes or until the flesh and skin are tender.

The meat and potatoes: Decor is important, but so is the menu. Wow your guests with this delicious recipe of roasted Kabocha squash with pomegranate yogurt from celebrity Chef Seamus Mullen. Kabocha Squash (Serves 4 or 16 tasting portions) Ingredients: 1/2 grated garlic 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/2 bunch chopped sage

2 tablespoons maple syrup 1 medium Kabocha squash skin on, seeded and cut into 4 wedges

Pepper 1/2 tablespoon Ras el Hanout spice

1 cup whole milk 1/2 clove of grated garlic 1/4 cup of Arbequina olive oil Zest and juice from one lemon

Seeds of 1 fresh pomegranate 2 tablespoons fresh mint, coarsely chopped Directions:

Meanwhile combine the milk, Arbequina olive oil, lemon zest and juice, peppercorn, pomegranate seeds, mint and salt and pepper to taste in a 20-ounce CW by CorningWare Small Baker. Remove the squash from oven and cut each piece into bite-size pieces. Place them in a clean, cool dish. Top each piece of squash with a dollop of the yogurt and serve immediately. Simple twists to make summer cooking even more sensational From juicy produce to savoury grilled meats, summer is the best time for tantalizing taste buds with delicious foods. This year, why not enhance traditional favourites with a few unique twists? These simple updates to classic summer dishes will have everyone raving.

Grown-up cheeseburgers If you love to grill, give your cheeseburgers an upgrade. Skip bland processed cheese slices and choose a more flavourful cheese with earthy tastes that complements grilled beef perfectly. Milk comes from local farmers whose herds are hand-milked twice each day to create a rich cheese free of preservatives and other chemicals.

Daring desserts When it comes to creating delicious desserts for summertime gatherings, there’s no shortage of options. If you truly want to wow your guests, though, it’s time to think outside the cake box. For example, instead of store-bought popsicles, make your own healthier versions from fresh fruit and juice. Enhance your famous cheesecake recipe with gorgonzola, or use blue cheese in flan for a surprisingly tasty twist. Take your favourite cookie one step further by making cookie pops - simply insert lollipop sticks into cookies, dip them in melted chocolate and add festive sprinkles as desired.

Sweet-savoury grilled fruit The season’s bounty of fruit is made even better when it’s grilled for a few minutes to bring out the extra-sweet flavours. For example, cut pears or peaches in half and grill until they’re warm. Another great way to add grilled fruit to your meal is with fruit kabobs - try pineapple, bananas, oranges, plums, apricots and more, grilling them for several minutes on skewers. Serve with a small wedge of blue cheese - for a unique treat that perfectly blends sweet and savoury flavours.

1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoon onion, finely chopped 3 tablespoon cream Paprika for colouring Directions: Beat cottage cheese with an electric mixer until smooth. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Serve chilled with vegetables or crackers. Note: For a thinner dip or salad dressing, add more cream.

Fig Creme Brulee Ingredients: 1 large black mission fig 1 teaspoon blue cheese 1/2 teaspoon raw sugar Directions: Cut fig in half. Using melon ball scoop or round spoon, remove seeds. Fill with blue cheese. Sprinkle with sugar. Caramelize sugar with torch until it has turned golden brown. Cook’s note: If you do not have a torch, put in the oven under the broiler until golden brown.

Deluxe vegetable plates Whether you grow your own or frequent the local farmers market, fresh vegetables are prevalent throughout the country during the summer months. That’s why vegetable plates are ideal for picnics and barbecues - simply cut up your favourite vegetables for a colourful display. Upgrade this summer favourite by adding a dip no one can resist. Skip store-bought varieties and make your own by mixing cottage cheese and crumbled blue cheese. Vegetables are guaranteed to be devoured. Here are a few recipes that will inspire at your next summer gathering:

Cottage Blue Dip & Dressing Ingredients: 1-1/2 cups cream-style small curd cottage cheese 1/3 cup Blue cheese, crumbled 1/8 teaspoon pepper Page 36

The Royal India in Sandton A Seasoned Experience!

T

he mention of The Royal India evokes three primary memories in almost all Indians, the first one being that of Quality, the second being of Style and Elegance and the third …… well read on future ROYAL DINERS! Easily the finest Indian restaurant in Gauteng and arguably the best in S.A, The Royal India is located in Sandton, Johannesburg off Maude Road opposite the Sandton Convention Centre. Says entrepreneur and owner Mr Jagjit Singh “The Royal India is a dream come true and it’s a honour to be situated in The gateway of South Africa which is Sandton, Gauteng . Living in South Africa since 2004 and being in the hospitality industry, I always had a dream to open up an authentic Indian restaurant with something different than other Indian restaurants in the country. As the sight came up for The Royal India Sandton branch, I made it my honest mission that I would give the best to the South African Rainbow nation as Indian culture forms an integral part of South African history , so too has The Royal India to take pride in bringing its traditional Indian culinary cuisine to Indian food lovers in South Africa. I believe in quality not in quantity and by visiting The Royal India Sandton, one should experience our culture and authentic taste of Indian foods. I would say The Royal India is redefining the Indian hospitality with a proper team of Indian chefs and managers from India with extensive experience and background from Five Star hotels in India. I believe that my employees are more important than all else and I am grateful to them, friends and loyal customers, who without their support It wouldn’t have happened” The Royal India in my opinion is the crème-dePage 38

la-crème of North Indian Restaurants. It rivals not only in quality in this country but also has a more upscale, decidedly genteel atmosphere, reminiscent of a exclusive private dining venue. Everything The Royal India offers says “quality,” from the moment you lay eyes on the finely layed out decor, the beautifully unique bar and the fine memorable service. As an appetizer, we started off with Chicken Tikka, Chicken Hara Kebab, Lamb Seekh Kebab and The Royal India’s very own creation, Royal Crown Kebab. The Royal Crown Kebab which is a combination of chicken and lamb mince topped with cheese which is skilfully marinated and grilled in a clay oven with the chefs secret recipes was prepared with perfection. As main courses, we had a non-veg and vegetarian dish. The butter chicken was one of the most delicious non veg meals I’ve ever tasted and the Royal Special 1 which serves up to four people is heavenly. We ended with a lamb biryani which was as good as they get. One gets a choice of different specially-prepared cuisine all delicious but wholly unnecessary which goes to show that customer service is ranked No 1 in this restaurant.

If ever you visit The Royal India be it even on a wet rainy day, trust me, as soon as you enter this restaurant, the bad weather will soon be forgotten. The welcome experience will always be a warm and extremely friendly one from the staff with an engaged and informative service . The food is great with many options even for those like me that can’t eat too spicy. I’ll definitely be back with family and friends! Bon appetite…… The Royal India also caters for Corporate Functions, Platters, Lunches & offers a widespread Takeaway Menu. Visit our other branch in Alberton for the same taste experience.

Our veg meals consisted of Vegetable Sheek, stuffed Tandoori mushrooms and Onion Bhajia and what we really loved where the authentic flavours which were innovative and beautifully presented. The side orders, such as the mixed platter which consisted of plain naan, garlic naan, missi roti and tandoori roti gave us excellent variety in the breads department. What really took me by surprise was the wine list which was exceptional, especially for such a new restaurant. Just when you think you can’t eat any more, The Royal India offers a range of special desserts and we were treated to a unique Gulab Jamoon and Carrot Halva desert that would make any desert lover swoon. www.pulsemagsa.wix.com/pulsemagsa
