ldorado Park has much to be proud of: the Joburg suburb is the home of 24-year-old Liesl Laurie, who is the newest wearer of the sought-after Miss South Africa crown. Believe in yourself, she tells other young girls. Fulfilling your dreams will make life worth it, she adds. Liesl Laurie is Miss South Africa 2015. (Image: Kevin Mark Pass, Miss SA Facebook) Liesl Laurie will remember 29 March forever: it was the night she was handed the Miss South Africa crown. "I am ready for the responsibility that has been placed on my shoulders," she said in her acceptance speech. "Taking on the title of Miss South Africa, I look forward to exploring our beautiful country, to seeing its beautiful landscape, but most importantly to connecting with its people. I am proud to stand

here as an ambassador of South Africa and my fellow South Africans." After Laurie, 24, completed her studies, she took a gap year to concentrate on her modelling career. She also spent time doing community work with a non-profit organisation called Babies Behind Bars. It cares for infants born to mothers in prison. "That experience taught me a lot about myself as a person, and also about not being too worried about what you don't have but being grateful for what you do have," she said in her Miss South Africa profile video. The new Miss South Africa advised women and girls to be themselves at all times. "Don't ever lose the little girl you are or once were as you grow up," she said. "Dreaming makes life beautiful and one day fulfilling your dreams will make life worth (contd. on p8)

Taking on the title of Miss South Africa, I look forward to exploring our beautiful country, to seeing its beautiful landscape, but most importantly to connecting with its people.. it. Finally, never forget to thank God for your blessings. Believe in yourself." As for inspiration, she named her grandmother as the most influential person in her life and her favourite person in the world. "She has inspired me to be the best possible version of myself by teaching me to believe in myself, to remain humble and to pray." Her mother, through overcoming her drug addiction, inspired her in a different way. The swimwear category is always controversial, but is still one of the most popular features of any pageant. This year was no different: Liesl Laurie wears a cocktail dress by Thula Sindi. "I was inspired by the timeless nature and the changing role of the Miss South Africa pageant so naturally I gravitated to another classic 'the little black dress,'" said the designer. (Image: Miss SA Facebook) Three Miss Worlds under one roof Laurie has big shoes to fill – last year's Miss South Africa, Rolene Strauss, went on to win the Miss World crown and has become one of the country's greatest ambassadors. "South Africa, this is for you," Strauss said in an interview after her win on the global stage in London. "I'm so proud of you and I'm proud to be your representative." Only two other South Africans have worn the Miss World crown: Anneline Kriel in 1974 and Penny Coelen-Rey in 1958. They were all at the 2015 pageant, alongside 12 other former Miss South Africas, who mentored each of this year's finalists. The national weekly newspaper, the Sunday Times called it the biggest gathering of title holders ever. "I'm looking forward to being on the other side [and] just watching the girls do their thing," Strauss said ahead of last weekend's pageant. Kriel spoke about the differences between 1974 and 2015. "I think the girls are much more worldy due to social media," she

said in a video interview. "They are educated. It is more than just a beauty pageant today." Support and challenges "We at Sun International are delighted with the crowning of Liesl whom, I am sure, will walk the path with pride and passion," said Sun International's public relations executive, Sue Klerck. "She represents the whole of South Africa and will make a meaningful contribution to the lives of many as this country celebrates 21 years of democracy." Suzette van der Merwe, a former Miss South Africa and a commercial communications executive at Cell C, added: "We would like to congratulate Liesl, and believe she will leave an indelible mark during her reign. The Cell C Believe manifesto says 'Believe that if you can dream it, you can achieve it', which is embodied in the new Miss South Africa and we feel she will make the country proud in whatever she achieves." to creating the shabby chic wedding of your

dreams

edding trends come and d go, driven by many cultural influences, but few are as enduring and romantic as shabby chic/shabby glam. With its perfect combination of elegance and softness, bright sparkles and gentle hues, a shabby chic wedding complements the individuality and beauty of brides of every age and walk of life. And, thanks to many rental stores increasing their inventory of shabby chic items, it's also one of the easiest and most fun wedding themes to create. Vintage wedding gowns, repurposed

10 Pulse Mag | March/April 2015

i d a wide id inventory i h i items and off thematic rental items can all work together to create a shabby chic wedding that is unique, memorable and affordable. You can visit RentalHQ.com to find your local American Rental Association member store that will help you with your individual needs. To create a wedding theme that is the perfect marriage of shabby and glam follow these three simple steps:

1. Flowers and lace are the perfect marriage Lace isn't just for your wedding gown and flowers aren't just for your bouquet.

Touches of lace added throughout the T h ceremony and reception underscore the air of nostalgic elegance that's essential to shabby chic. This can be as easy as adding lace touches to wedding invitations or using pieces of lace as placemats or coasters on reception tables. Or, it can be as grand as a lace tent liner that evokes a romantic, bygone era. Florals are key to creating a shabby chic look. Whether the bride and groom stand beneath a bower of pastel blooms while exchanging vows, or floral accents throughout the bride's couture, flowers and floral patterns lend romance and grace to every aspect of a shabby chic wedding.

2. Light the way Light plays an important role in any shabby chic themed event. For weddings, vintage-looking chandeliers, candelabras and hurricane lamps act both as decorative items and sources of romantic light. It's easy to add thematic lighting to any wedding, even if your reception will be in an ordinary hall or tent. Rental companies offer an array of lighting options that can be temporarily outfitted to any venue. Adorn tables with classic silver candelabra or add a stunning crystal chandelier to an outdoor tent. You can find a variety of lighting options on RentalHQ.com. Many rental stores have increased their inventory of shabby chic decor items to meet brides' demands, so renting can give you access to greater variety. Plus, you'll reap the cost savings of renting versus buying.

3. Layers of texture The pleasing union of diverse colors and textures is at the heart of a shabby

chic wedding. Soft colors are the perfect foil for sparkles, and distressed wood complements the beauty of aged metals like silver and pewter. All these elements come together to evoke the grace and comfort of bygone times. Look for creative ways to harmoniously incorporate these touches into your wedding. For example, display your wedding cake, adorned with real flowers, atop a rustic wooden table. Decorate an antique metal birdcage with lace and ribbon and use it as a holder where reception guests can deposit cards for the bride and groom. Add petite crystal and pearl accents to bouquets and centrepieces. For a rustic food table, rent wooden barrels, top with an aged wooden plank, and present food on vintage serving plates. Finally, look for inspiration online. Resources like Pinterest, Etsy and theknot yield a wealth of ideas, and you can browse photos of other weddings and bridal creations to find the perfect look p for your shabby chic wedding.

5 tips

Facing financial pressures:

I

for the sandwich generation Would you sacrifice your retirement and savings to simultaneously support your elderly parents and adult children?

t’s not something many people envision, but millions are doing just that. These individuals are part of the sandwich generation-middle-aged adults caring for two different generations of family at the same time while planning for their own retirement goals. Not surprisingly, this situation can cause significant financial strain. Research shows the pressure experienced by the sandwich generation is growing. According to a 2013 Pew Research Centre survey, 21 percent of adults ages 40 to 59 provided some financial support to a parent aged 65 or older. By contrast, nearly half (48 percent) provided support to at least one adult child in the same period, up from 42 percent just seven years earlier. “The emotional and financial strain of caring for an aging parent is challenging, but as more people also provide support for an adult child, financial security becomes a big concern,” says Adam Hamm, National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) President and

North Dakota Insurance Commissioner. “Fortunately, making smart choices along the way can help alleviate the financial stresses felt by the sandwich generation and safeguard their long-term financial well-being.” To avoid common pitfalls and to help plan for the unpredictable, the NAIC offers five tips to help consumers in the sandwich generation.

. Set expectations: Be open about how much financial support you plan to give your children once they reach adulthood. Decide how long you will allow coverage under your health plan and who will pay associated co-pays and deductibles. If your adult children live with you, have the same conversation about auto insurance.

. Create a plan: Alleviate confusion in the midst of a crisis by creating a plan for your loved one’s care.

2

. Solicit support: Caring for a parent while working full-time and raising kids is physically and emotionally draining. Surround yourself with people who care and be willing to ask for help.

3

. Talk about finances: Long before you think you need to, review your parents’ insurance policies to understand their wishes, so you’re informed enough to

family depends on you as the primary source of income, take time to evaluate your life insurance needs. Getting the correct amount provides peace of mind. Once your child is financially independent, you may wish to decrease the amount of your policy. “Initiating important conversations can help reduce stress and ensure finances remain intact,” says Hamm. “It’s essential to maintain an open mind and employ honest communication so everyone understands expectations.

Moms in training: From feeding to diaper changing, new moms and dads are flooded with information to learn and decisions to make for their new bundles of joy. A recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive found that nearly 75 percent of moms plan to return to work post-maternity leave.

3 2 1 W

hat many new moms may not yet fully realize is that becoming a mother is a full time job in and of itself. Like any profession, new moms deserve training, breaks and lots of support! Tammy Gold, parenting expert and author of the new book “Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer,” shares some easy tips mothers can use to help ease the transition into their new parenting role:

Fill yourself up

“No mother can give 100 percent of herself, 100 percent of the time, to her children or her partner,” Gold says. “Mom needs to remember what makes her who she is and what she needs emotionally and physically to live a complete life.” Filling yourself up can come from work, volunteering, taking classes, joining online groups, being in a book club, reading, hiking, walking or working

14 Pulse Mag | March/April 2015

out. Do whatever it takes to “fill you up” emotionally, mentally and physically - apart from your children and family. Remember: happy mommy equals a happy baby!

Crack the crying code

When your baby cries, it can frustrate you, prevent you from sleeping, or even make you feel like crying yourself. Figuring out why your newborn is crying can ease a lot of stress. The main causes for infant crying typically include a dirty diaper, hunger, fatigue or being too hot. However, if these are not the issues, your baby could be suffering from gas, colic or reflux. Switching to the right baby formula or modifying your own diet if breastfeeding can fix all these issues. If you’re formula feeding, try switching your baby’s formula to a “sensitive” or “gentle” type formula. These formulas have less lactose and can help to reduce

gas and colic. Remember: the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) strictly regulates infant formula to keep all babies safe. By switching to store brands, families can save up to 50 percent a year, which can certainly help with mom’s stress level.

Don’t compare

“You are the best mother to your children,” Gold says. “It does not matter which moms work full time or which moms stay at home to run the ‘perfect’ home. Your children do not care what ‘other moms’ can manage or complete; they only care about you.” Believe in yourself and know that you are the best mother to your children. Be aware of the advice of others, but always trust your own gut, because you know what is best for your own children.

Money-saving weddingplanning tips for any budget W

eddings can be expensive and most brides and grooms need to establish a budget before they start planning the wedding so they can afford to get hitched. Many couples are now getting married later in life and paying most or all of the costs themselves, so it’s important to start budgeting sooner than later. The following tips will help you and your partner keep your costs down so you can stay within your wedding budget. They cover everything from the moment when you say “Yes” to the second you say “I do.” 1. Set a long engagement - There are two benefits to having an engagement of a year or longer. First, it allows you to spread costs over several pay checks. For example, if you get engaged this spring, you can choose one month to put a down payment on the reception hall and another month for purchasing the wedding dress and renting the tuxedo. A third month could be used for purchasing honeymoon trip tickets and

a fourth month for the photographer’s down payment. During your engagement you can also start putting money into a savings account so you aren’t strapped for cash immediately following your wedding. The second reason a long engagement makes financial sense is that many couples will set a seasonal theme for their weddings, wanting to decorate the wedding and reception hall in that theme. The best time to purchase decorations and supplies for seasonal events is immediately following those events, because stores discount them when it’s time to get them off the shelves. Longer engagements allow couples to take advantage of a these seasonal discounts at least once, if not twice. 2. Combine your resources - A couple living in the same household can save hundreds of rands monthly by combining expenses related to rent/ bond, utilities, groceries and even transportation. If you recently became engaged and are considering moving

in together, calculate how much money you’ll be saving so you can apply those savings toward your wedding budget. During the moving process, you can save additional money. For example, when you combine your households, will you need two sets of dishes and furniture? Probably not. Perhaps you can even host a garage sale to sell the items you don’t need duplicates of; then you can put that money toward a wedding-related item. 3. Find the best deals - If you’ve always dreamed of getting married under a tent at a local park, you might discover that tent rental far exceeds your budget especially if you live in an urban setting. This is where the Internet can be very helpful. Sometimes it’s cheaper to rent equipment like tents, folding chairs, wedding canopies and other decorations from businesses that are located outside of your community. When you and your loved one begin planning your wedding, keep your budgetbalancing stress to a minimum with these helpful money-saving tips.

The Bespoke Suit... by Omar Osman The Bespoke Suit…. has it become something of the past, are there people out there who have never heard of its mastery before?

16 Pulse Mag | March/April 2015

F

or the discerning gentlemen out there and also for those who have never heard of it, we are going to be talking about suits and not just any suits but bespoke suits in particular. You may ask yourself, what’s so special about the infamous bespoke suit? Most people assume, off the rack is just as great and because of brand power you pay for something that lacks on the two most fundamental reasons, fit and quality. The bespoke process is one that takes time, imagination and complete satisfaction with your purchase. The process: Measurements, material and style choice: When purchasing a bespoke suit, on the first appointment your measurements should be taken. From there, the cloth you would like to make the suit from must be selected. A good tailoring company would keep a wide selection of pure wools staying far away from polyester blends. Italian, English and Australian wools and the highest of quality. Prices range according to the quality of the wool and the style of the suit. Now for the style of the suit. The combinations are endless and all up to the choice of the customer. Whether you want a Harvey Spector power suit or something so unusually coloured and style that it’s completely one of the kind you are the one with all the power. With the right guidance you can let your imagination run wild. Now that all of the aspects of the suit have been chosen and finalized, a deposit would be paid so that the process may get started. The master tailor then gets to work by cutting your suit for your fitting.

The Fitting: The fitting is one of the most important parts of the bespoke process, this is where you try on the shell of your suit. You can get the exact feel and shape of the finished product. At the fitting, key aspects like length and shoulders are taken into consideration. If you want to slim down the suit to get that extra slim tailored fit you are more than welcome to. If you have specific requirements on the fit, maybe no shoulder padding or a 3 button suit, all of those factors are considered as well as the choice of lining, with endless colour choices, from black silk to a shiny pink it’s all your choice. The buttons are also selected at this stage, whether you want matching mat or maybe red buttons. The thrill of being completely free to do what you want is euphoric! The End product: Now when you come in for the final fitting and collection of your suit, you have one more try and you finally you see it. Something you’ve thought about and pictured for so long is now actually completed. You see your imagination come to life and it’s everything you’ve thought it would be. When you put it on and look in the mirror, you see yourself as the man you want to become. It looks perfect, you look perfect. You can’t help but smile!! Help men reclaim space Bathroom sharing tips

M

ost couples acknow-ledge that women get the majority of space in the bathroom. In fact, men claim that just one-third of the bathroom is set aside for their things, according to the 2014 U.S. Dove Men+ Care Hair Survey and they often reach for items that belong to their partner, instead of products made for them. Dove Men+Care, which offers hair care products made specifically for men, has partnered with well-known home improvement duo, Mark and Theresa Clement, to help men reclaim a bathroom space of their own. The Clements, who are space-maximizing pros through their own personal experiences and frequent client requests, dole out some helpful tips for sharing a bathroom with your partner: * Mark suggests, “Even before you start organizing your space, talk about what you’re looking for! Do you like the top shelfor do you prefer the bottom? Are you frustrated by open shampoo tops or soap left on the shower floor? Speak up! It can be helpful to organize your space together.” * Try to keep in mind that sharing space is all about compromise. Some need more cabinet space while others need more space in the shower. Theresa advises, “Try to be flexible with your partner’s requests! I love having my products easily accessible, but I know Mark does, too. Do your best to divide space according to your needs and always respect your partner’s space.” * Play with boundaries. Creating structure will remind you which area is yours and which belongs to your partner. The Clements love “his-and-hers” shelves or shower caddies and also recommend customized drawers or cabinet space if you’re looking to invest in your home. * Stock products for both of you. About nine in 10 men have borrowed their partners’ products, according to the 2014 U.S. Dove Men+Care Hair Survey, but many women wish they didn’t. To stop the cycle, find a product he likes, such as Aqua Impact Shampoo from Dove Men+Care Hair-and keep using your favourites! * While you may not have an eye for decor like Theresa, putting your own stamp on the area is important. “Don’t forget about decorations,” she says. “Moving in together means creating a space for his and her tastes. Explore the colours and themes each of you prefers and find a way to combine the two for a unique style.” Jumpstart your way to a happy bathroom, with the full range of Dove Men+Care products, and these great tips from Mark & Theresa.

Today's changing social environment and confusing messages about drugs and alcohol may be MAKING IT EVEN MORE DIFĂžCULT FOR TEENAGERS TO GET THEIR BEARINGS AS THEY MOVE TOWARD ADULTHOOD 4HAT IS WHY IT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER FOR PARENTS TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN THEIR KIDS LIVES AND HAVE THE SKILLS TO RESPOND TO THEIR TEENS APPROPRIATELY

pecifically, as drugs and alcohol are becoming more accessible and more states are legalizing marijuana, many teens may believe that the use of marijuana or other substances is now okay. Parents should know that legalization of marijuana does not mean it is harmless, and increased availability of other substances does not make them less harmful, either. Marijuana and other substances can cause permanent damage to the teenage brain, and teens can become addicted more quickly than adults. This is a time when parents need to become involved in their teens’ lives and help them navigate these complex issues. While many parents may think of their teens as grown-ups and able to fully take care of themselves, teenagers have said that this is a time when they need their parents the most. Asking questions and

that teens whose parents expect them to engage in risky behaviours such as drinking and using drugs are more likely to do so. “It is critical that parents understand their role and take conscious measures to support their teens in living a healthy and happy life, Wright says. “Parents should ask what their teens are doing, address the pressures they are facing, act immediately when they suspect their teen is in trouble, and advocate for help if their teen needs it to help them live a healthy life. Starting a conversation with a teen about substances can be daunting. It can be even more overwhelming for a parent when their teenage child approaches them with questions before they have had a chance to prepare. The easiest thing you can do for your health and looks:

Y

ou probably already know that exercising and eating right are key ways to improve your health. But, you may be overlooking one major health necessity that is as close as your kitchen faucet - water. It’s vital all year long, even during winter months when you might think hydration is less important. Staying hydrated is a very important component of staying healthy and most people know they need to stay hydrated when they are doing vigorous exercise or in very hot weather, but they don’t realize the importance of making sure they are getting enough water every day.

Why water is important Sixty percent of your body weight is made up of water. Since water carries nutrients to cells in your body and flushes toxins from vital organs, it is important to replace what you lose daily. Our bodies are always losing water, even when we breathe we are losing small amounts, so, it is important to know how much water you need daily and to make a point of drinking it.

Your daily intake Men need three litres, or 13 cups, of water a day. Women should drink 2.2 litres or nine cups daily. If you drink water with each meal and at least one glass between each meal, you will be very close to what you need to drink every day. And there is good news if you want some variety. Beverages like milk and even coffee can take the place of some of the water that you need to drink daily. Drinks that are high in water and low in calories, are acceptable substitutions for water. But watch out for sugary, high-calorie drinks that will cause weight gain.

Beauty benefits The benefits of staying properly hydrated every day go beyond good health. Staying hydrated also approves the appearance of your skin. Drinking a glass of water is one of the easiest things any of us can do. It is important to how your body works on the inside and how it looks on the outside. Adding this simple step to your daily routine is well worth the many benefits.

A year-round guide to

beer and wine pairing

When you hear the phrase “pairing tips,” do you instinctively grab your wine opener and pull out stemmed glasses?

W

ine is divine, but over the past few years there’s no denying that craft beers are trending and getting foodies everywhere excited to re-think pairing possibilities. Artisan and handcrafted beers are no longer just an afterthought on the drink menu, they’re standing tall next to your favourite red and white wine varietals, proving to be just as food-friendly. Whether you’re an aspiring sommelier or a beer enthusiast, it’s time to pour a glass of something new and see how the other side pairs. Get started with these tips from renowned foodie expert and blogger Brian Samuels of “A Thought for Food.” Samuels recommends the acclaimed, handcrafted wine varietals of Bridlewood Estate Winery along with your beer of choice. For more information visit www.BridlewoodWinery.com.

Food: Burger with caramelized onions Beverage: Pinot noir or English IPA Why: Burgers and beer always seem like a natural pairing, but have you ever tried pairing it with a glass of wine? Next time you’re lighting up the grill, pull out a bottle of Bridlewood Pinot Noir. A slight char on the burger pairs beautifully with the hint of black pepper in the wine. For the brew lovers in the group, serve an English IPA. The caramel notes that come through in the beer pair perfectly with burger toppings such as grilled red onions.

Food: Lobster roll Beverage: Chardonnay or Pilsner

Why: There are few things more enjoyable than sitting outside on a blazing hot summer day with a tall beer or a glass of wine. Pilsners and chardonnay are lighter options that pair with a variety of foods. For heavier dishes, like a lobster roll, the vanilla notes of a chardonnay go perfectly with the natural sweetness of the lobster meat. If craft beer is more your thing, try a Pilsner. The slight bitterness (from the hops) and sweetness (from the malt) flavours, as well as the fizziness of the beer, help cut through the richness in the creamy lobster roll.

Food: Roasted vegetables with Gorgonzola and fresh herbs Beverage: Brown ale or cabernet sauvignon Why: Traditionally cabernet pairs best with meat, but what about a dish for vegetarians? Roast up cold weather favourites such as carrots, parsnips and turnips to bring out their natural sweetness. These satisfying flavours will shine when sipping on cabernet sauvignon with its subtle notes of chocolate and molasses - or try a glass of brown ale, which embodies caramel and nutty flavours.

Food: Chocolate truffles Beverage: Red blend or stout Why: End the feast with a plate of decadent chocolate truffles and serve with the Bridlewood Blend 175, loaded with jammy notes. For the beer lovers at the table, a stout, which is rich in chocolate and coffee notes, is another natural accompaniment.

Hollywood tips

to keep your eyes star-worthy N

o matter the season, beautiful and healthy eyes are always in style. How can you make your eyes shine like your favourite stars? Jennie Garth, mom of three and star of ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ and ‘The Jennie Garth Project’ has joined the Science of Beautiful Eyes (http://theeyesolution.com) initiative sponsored by Alcon to help drive awareness around the importance of taking care of your eyes and making it an important part of your daily routine. “As an actress, being in front of the camera adds a lot of pressure to keeping your look healthy and fresh,” Garth says. “Picking out the right eye makeup to highlight my eyes isn’t the only thing I think about in the morning. I also make sure that my eyes feel good and look healthy. From personal experience, I’ve come up with a few tips that may help others.” To keep your eyes looking their best, Garth offers these tips: 1. “Waterproof mascara is great when you need a long lasting product, but when it comes time to washing your face, it could be the biggest battle of the day,” Garth says. “The eye SOLUTION(TM) Program has great options to consider when cleansing your face, including SYSTANE(R) Lid Wipes. These gentle wipes quickly remove debris and eye makeup that may cause eye irritation.”

24 Pulse Mag | March/April 2015

2. “You want to see your face when you put your makeup on so be sure to remember that your contact lenses go in before you apply anything to your face,” Garth notes. “And remember to always start with freshly washed and dry hands. This will help prevent bacteria from getting into the eye during the application process.” 3. “During allergy season, my eyes tend to get scratchy which makes me want to constantly rub them,” says Garth. “I use eye drops like Alcon’s ZADITOR(R) Eye Drops to relieve my itchy eyes before applying makeup. It is an easy way to help keep my mascara from running and my eyeliner from smearing!” 4. “Over the years, I’ve picked up tips from makeup artists I’ve worked with, and if I can share one thing it’s to check the expiration dates on your makeup to help prevent irritation and infection,” says Garth. “For instance, mascara and eyeliner should be used for no longer than three-to-six months and then discarded.” 5. “Living in Southern California, it can reach scorching temperatures during the day which can cause my eyes to become dry and irritated. SYSTANE(R) Lubricant Eye Drops provide lasting relief throughout the day,” says Garth.

What parents feed baby t c a p im rm e -t g n lo e v a can h Experts agree that the food babies eat helps set the stage for growth and development, but did you know that it also impacts long-term eating habits and taste development?

C

hildren who consumed fruits and vegetables infrequently and drank sweet drinks during late infancy showed those same habits at age six, according to new data published in the journal Paediatrics. Infants who consumed sweetened beverages more than three times a week at 10-12 months were twice as likely to be obese at age six. These findings validate the 2008 Nestle

28 Pulse Mag | March/April 2015

Feeding Infants and Toddlers Study (FITS), which also found eating habits are set in early infancy and mimic unhealthy eating habits seen in older children and adults. FITS is the largest, most comprehensive dietary intake survey of over 3,300 parents and caregivers of young children. The FITS findings showed preschoolers are getting nearly one-third (400 calories) of their total daily calories from fats and added sugars, and common childhood foods such as whole milk,

cheese and hot dogs are contributing to excessive saturated fat and sodium in young children’s diets. Nutrition expert Dr. Kathleen Reidy, who heads Nutrition, Meals and Drinks at Nestle Nutrition, says, “What you feed your baby now affects them not just today, but tomorrow and beyond. The first years of a child’s life are a critical period of development, and instilling good eating habits during this time can help put a child on the path to a healthy future.”

For parents and caregivers, Dr. Reidy has some tips to help instill healthy eating habits for young children:

Meal time is game time

fruits and vegetables instead of those high in sodium like hot dogs, chicken nuggets and dishes that contain cheese. * Offer a rainbow of fruits and vegetables for snacks and meals; for mixed dishes, choose items with a serving of vegetables.

* Replace foods high in saturated fat with lean meats, low-fat dairy products and foods high in healthier fats such as avocado, fish and those made with olive, safflower and canola oils. * Offer a variety of healthy foods, and try to set a good example by eating them yourself. If a child sees mom, dad or siblings eating a nutritious food, she may be more willing to try it. * Milk is key in children’s diets and a top contributor of many important nutrients. Children over the age of two should be offered lower fat options such as one percent and skim instead of whole milk to limit saturated fat intake.

A healthy snack attack

Don’t forget the fruits and veggies

* If your baby or toddler resists a new fruit or vegetable, don’t fret and try again. It can take up to 10 tries before a child accepts a new food.

* Plan ahead for healthy snacks to take on-the-go. Pack fruit and vegetable pouches for older toddlers. * Speak with family and other caregivers about limiting sweets and choosing healthy snacks when they are caring for your child.

Every bride wants to look exquisite for her wedding day celebration and wants to enjoy and have the most memorable experience with all her pre-wedding preparations which include planning her wedding day beauty look.

Rahista Gopal The Bridal Stylist

One of the most important if not the most important day in a woman’s life is her wedding day. Bridal makeup is one of the most important aspects that transforms her look from being simply pretty to spell bounding. The type of makeup one uses, the makeup artist, the theme of the entire look the bride wants to carry, everything should be researched and decided before shopping for the wedding trousseau.

H

ere we have Rahista Gopal one of SAs leading makeup artists, she has been The Face of RED square Edgars cosmetics brand and currently owns a bridal business. We have chatted to her about tips and tricks for the wedding day for you soon to be brides out there. This is what Miss Rahista Gopal suggests. Every bride wants to look exquisite for her wedding day celebration and wants to enjoy and have the most memorable experience with all her pre-wedding preparations which include planning her wedding day beauty look. In order to have the most unique look for the perfect wedding, hair and makeup trends should only be guides in choosing the most beautiful styles. Your skin tone, hair personality and condition, elaborate wedding up-do’s and your comfort with a more dramatic wedding makeup will greatly determine what your wedding look will be.

As the well-known wedding beauty saying goes, “You’ll look like you, only better.” There are a few steps and things to consider before choosing your wedding hair and makeup styles. One of the first things to take into consideration is your wedding location and setup. If you are going for a formal outdoor wedding, your hair might be swept up in an elegant fashion or left loose and flowing in a romantic style. If you are considering a daytime wedding, a more natural makeup look is needed while an evening wedding requires more dramatic makeup. According to top wedding makeup trends, bold, red lips can be worn in any wedding style and is the signature style of today’s weddings.

When talking wedding beauty, a great and best first step is scheduling a bridal trial consisting of bridal hair and bridal makeup. I believe that this is crucial in getting the perfect look on your wedding day and have included bridal trials in all my bridal packages. Your bridal trail can take place at any time before your wedding day. An earlier start allows you to work on a regimen for healthier hair, a smart plan for growing out your hair, getting hair color and highlights done so that you look beautiful for all your pre-wedding parties, and so that you get more time for pre-wedding pampering as your hair and skin get prepped for your big day. Healthier hair is essential for the perfect wedding hairstyles and allows for a regimen of deep conditioning and timed trims. I encourage all my brides to share with me her wedding hairstyle, photos of your wedding gown, details on your wedding venue, wedding season, if it’s an outdoor

garden wedding or an indoor ballroom wedding, as well as any wedding styles you may have found on the internet or magazines. The more information that is shared the better your wedding wishes can be fulfilled to create the perfect look. This also helps in determining the weather elements your look will face so that you look flawless from start to finish on your big day. When talking hair styles, another important thing to remember is the need for adding extensions to give your hair more fullness and luxurious detail. Nutrition choices made

easy in the grocery aisle

Should you buy eggs instead of cereal? Popcorn in place of pretzels? For consumers seeking "better-for-you" foods at the grocery store, these types of decisions can feel overwhelming and for some, time-consuming.

W

ith the help of the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System, making healthier decisions at store shelves becomes easier and quicker. Developed by a team of recognized experts, led by Dr. David Katz of the Yale Griffin Prevention Research Centre, the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System was created as a direct response to America’s rapidly rising rates of obesity and diabetes in both adult and child populations. This team advocated the development of an independent and simplified nutritional scoring system to help improve public health. The easy-to-use NuVal Nutritional Scoring System provides foods throughout participating grocery stores with a score of one to 100, 100 being the most nutritious. Scores are determined by an independent team of nutrition and medical experts who analyze more than 30 nutrition factors such as vitamin D, omega 3 fatty acids, saturated fat and calories. The experts do the research, so consumers can feel better about their food choices. “Choosing the right foods at the grocery store can make or break your healthy meal plan for the week,” says registered dietician Tammy Lakatos Shames. “When walking the aisles, pick up wholesome foods that are packed with essential vitamins and nutrients. For example, Eggland’s Best eggs are the highest-scoring egg on the NuVal scale and the only egg I recommend to my clients and serve my family due to their superior nutrition!”

40 Pulse Mag | March/April 2015

Check out the foods Tammy recommends for your shopping cart next time you hit the grocery store: * Fruits and vegetables top the list With a score of 100, vegetables like broccoli and asparagus receive a perfect score due to their nutritional benefits. They provide important nutrients including vitamin A, which helps protect against infections, dietary fibre which helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and may lower risk of heart disease, and folate, which helps the body form red blood cells. * Seafood catches top scores Fishing for healthy foods? Try wild Atlantic salmon filets, which have a score of 96 on the NuVal scale. This fish selection offers calcium, which helps build strong bones and phosphorus, which helps with digestion. Fish is also a great source of minerals such as iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium and potassium. * Eggs crack the NuVal Code Eggs are a complete protein that keeps you full to prevent snacking and also include important nutrients your body needs throughout the day. Out of 56 brands of eggs reviewed, Eggland’s Best eggs scored the highest at 85. Compared to ordinary eggs, Eggland’s Best eggs contain four times more vitamin D, 10 times more vitamin E and double the omega 3s. A fast pace and busy schedule may make you think that frequenting restaurants and fast food spots is faster than cooking at home.

Meal-planning hacks to help you dine fast and healthy

hours on the weekend to prep your food for the upcoming week can help ensure that you have dinner on the table quickly, no matter how busy your weeknights get. To make meal-planning easy, keep

these time-saving hacks in mind: Keep low cost, highly versatile ingredients on hand. Beans: Not only are they a great source of protein, but you can use them in a variety

of dishes, including salads, soups and chilli. Grains: Easy to buy in bulk for extra savings, grains such as quinoa, brown rice or barley store easily in an air-fresh container and can serve as a foundation to any meal. Frozen steam-in bag veggies: You’ll need a side for that roast chicken. Frozen vegetables offer the same nutritional value as fresh ones with the convenience of microwave cooking in less than five minutes. What’s more, you can use them to make a variety of meals from pasta dishes to casseroles. Consider new Alexia Parmesan Peas, French Herb green beans or Italian Herb Corn with Sun-Dried Sweet Tomatoes.

Flavour your entrees faster Some say fresh herbs make everything better. But when herbs aren’t in season or you feel too time pressed to go beyond the dried spice bottles, consider these time-saving seasoning tips to elevate your entree. Peel garlic cloves faster by quickly crushing them with your hands and tossing the cloves into a big bowl. Flip another bowl upside down to cover the garlic-filled bowl. Shake the two bowls together vigorously for 10 seconds. The garlic should emerge perfectly peeled. Want to extend fresh herbs beyond the season?

{

Diced tomatoes: The vine-ripened taste of diced tomatoes, like Hunt’s, can easily combine with frozen veggies and beans for a soup. Sauté them with onions, or quickly puree them for a homemade pasta sauce.

Add herbs such as cilantro or basil to ice cube trays and fill with olive oil before freezing.

Simply pop out individual cubes when sautéing vegetables, cooking pasta or roasting meats. Repurpose leftovers Don’t stress yourself out making a new meal when you still have some left from the last one. You can also get creative and combine leftovers to prepare new meals. Try throwing yesterday’s chicken into your favourite whole-wheat pasta. Or, use leftover potatoes, like Alexia Smart Classics Tri-cut Potatoes, for a breakfast mix-up that will surprise your family. All you’ll need are a few staples from the refrigerator like ham, onion and green pepper and voila. Map out your meal Look for ways to cook once and have enough food for the rest of the week. Making dishes in bulk and freezing them or cooking up a big batch of protein to incorporate into several different meals are all ways you can make a day in the kitchen stretch into meals for the week.

avoured flavours can come and go like fashion trends, but every now and then a taste comes along that’s so versatile and memorable, it earns a lasting place in culinary tradition. With its zest and spice, sriracha is poised to secure its status as a top flavour for 2015 and beyond. The sizzling flavour, which traces its roots to a classic Thai hot sauce of the same name, has been on the American culinary scene for about two decades. Between 2008 and 2012, the use of sriracha on restaurant menus increased by 153 percent, making it the fastestgrowing flavour, according to Technomic’s flavour Consumer Trend Report. You can incorporate this powerful taste into your home menus this spring and summer with a few tips and tricks.

The year’s hot condiment While the original sriracha sauce was often incorporated into dishes as an ingredient, contemporary variations have turned it into a versatile condiment. Iconic American ketchup maker Heinz has recently launched Heinz Tomato Ketchup Blended with Sriracha Flavour. The company known for its line of flavoured ketchups and the beloved original now offers the sriracha-flavoured condiment in the familiar upside-down 14-ounce squeeze bottle. The flavoured ketchup makes it easy to enjoy great sriracha flavour on dishes from burgers, hot dogs and French fries to eggs and chicken!

Great for every course Few flavours or ingredients can measure up to use in virtually every course, but sriracha certainly can. It’s an adaptable ingredient for everything from hors d’oeuvres and appetizers to main courses, side dishes and even desserts. It adds a distinctive zing to any dish and works with sweet flavours as well as it does with savoury or spicy profiles. Straight sriracha - or the new offering from Heinz - makes a great dipping sauce for a variety of starters, including raw

veggies. Blend it with hummus or chicken dip for an exciting variation on favourite dips. Added to devilled eggs, sriracha adds subtle spice and colour. For main dishes, sriracha works well with virtually any kind of meat, poultry or seafood. Incorporated into brine, it imparts flavour and moisture to turkey and enriches the flavour of beef skewers when used as a marinade. Sriracha can even elevate breakfast and not just as a topping for scrambled eggs. It’s easy to find recipes online that incorporate sriracha for everything from muffins to oatmeal. And when used in desserts, the heat of sriracha is the perfect foil for sweet ingredients, creating a multi-layered depth of flavours.

Restaurant creativity Convinced you want to explore sriracha but unsure of your creative skills? Draw inspiration from restaurants across the country that have been offering inventive presentations of sriracha for years. From fast-food chains and pizza franchises to fine-dining establishments, restaurateurs have embraced sriracha. Some of the most eye-catching and taste-bud stimulating offerings include: * Macaroni and cheese * Pizza crust * Vinaigrette for watermelon salad * Brownies

recipe that is ideal for any occasion, from weeknight meals to Sunday suppers to get-togethers with friends, can be hard to come by. Tuscan Brined Pork Chops with Salsa Verde is a near-perfect answer for all of these occasions. Created by food blogger Karen Tedesco of the popular blog FamilyStyle Food, this recipe was inspired by her visit to Vinci, Italy, where she experienced the people and the place behind the cooperative of more than 200 growers who work together to produce DaVinci Chianti.

Tedesco found natural herbs, including bay laurel, lavender and rosemary, growing all over the Tuscan countryside. As Tedesco explains, these are classic and delicious seasonings for thick cut pork chops with flavours that pair perfectly with a wellbalanced glass of Chianti.
