Experience Barbara Fritchie’s Frederick By: Michelle Kershner

Photography courtesy of Tourism Council of Frederick County

“Shoot, if you must, this old gray head, but spare your country’s flag...” Barbara Fritchie’s life spanned an amazing time in our country’s history, including three major conflicts on American soil. Born Barbara Hauer in 1766, she is reported to have come in contact with some of the most famous people of the time. Her long life was humble and frugal, since her husband, John Fritchie, worked as a glove maker.

Barbara Frietchie, was originally published in the October 1863 issue of Atlantic magazine. The poem recounted how Fritchie was threatened by a Confederate soldier as she waved the American flag, and defiantly retorted, “Shoot, if you must, this old gray head, but spare your country’s flag...” Barbara Fritchie personified the stubborn Union spirit of Frederick.

Events that made Barbara Fritchie a household name unfolded 150 years ago. During the 1862 Maryland Campaign of the Civil War, Confederate troops marched through downtown Frederick along West Patrick Street on their way to what would be known as the battles of South Mountain and Antietam. Legend has it that Frederick native Barbara Fritchie, aged in her 90s, waved the Union flag out her window as the Confederate soldiers marched through town. The famed John Greenleaf Whittier ballad,

The poem’s popularity eventually bolstered Frederick’s Fritchie to American heroine status. It was this poem that also coined the popular phrase “clustered spires,” used to this day to describe Frederick’s skyline of church steeples and towers. Whittier’s poem created a patriotic fervor rivaling that of another ode to the flag during wartime and written by a former Frederick resident nearly 50 years earlier. This was Francis Scott

This exhibit at the Museum of Frederick County History examines the marketing of Barbara Fritchie and the use of her name and image (real and imagined) to promote consumer products from the 1920s through 2000. The Whittier poem, a

FALL 2012

Since its creation, the ballad Barbara Frietchie has introduced Frederick, Maryland to generations of people across the world. combination of actual events and “poetic license,” was intended to rally the morale of Union sympathizers during the Civil War. After the war ended, little attention was paid to the poem or the alleged “event” described in it. In 1927, local Frederickarea residents created a partnership to rebuild Barbara Fritchie’s house as a tourist attraction along the National Road. It was then that Barbara Fritchie took on another life. Souvenirs, businesses, events and consumer products, from women’s hosiery to hams and candy, used Fritchie’s name to capitalize on the patriotic popularity of the poem’s heroine. She showed up in films, plays and music, often portrayed as a young lady instead of the elderly woman that she was in 1862. This exhibit explores the marketing of Barbara Fritchie and the use of her name and image to promote products. The brochure, “Barbara Fritchie’s Frederick,” is available at the Frederick Visitor Center, 151 S. East St., Frederick. Be it the changing colors, the smell of neighborhood fireplaces being lit for the first time, the pleasantly cool weather or the excitement of the approaching holiday season, the streets of Downtown Frederick come alive through the autumn and holiday season. This year, residents and visitors alike will enjoy several events highlighting all that our historic district has to offer. Are you a foodie? In October, a Progressive Dinner features four courses served by four distinctive and delicious downtown restaurants with proceeds from tickets benefiting the Downtown

Frederick Partnership, the city’s designated Main Street Maryland organization. The dinner takes place on October 2, with four available seating times. Downtown Frederick Partnership’s First Saturday events celebrate a different theme every month of the year. This fall, October’s First Saturday, called Into the Night, is sponsored by Hood College and Criswell Automotive of Gaithersburg. This is downtown’s true introduction to the holiday season. Complete with food and wine tastings, horse-drawn carriage rides, and plenty of merchant activities, the Holiday Open House is an opportunity to get a head start on holiday shopping while enjoying the beautiful surroundings of downtown. Remember, by shopping downtown, you support the local businesses that make Downtown Frederick unique. Don’t get stuck in traffic at the mall or a big box store on “Black Friday” this year. Instead, bring your family to Downtown Frederick for Frosty Friday on the day after Thanksgiving. BB&T BANK, Criswell Automotive of Gaithersburg, and TownePlace Suites by Marriott sponsor the event. Frosty Friday is an all-day affair, with live entertainment, prizes and gifts, free hot cocoa and s’mores, carolers, Frosty the Snowman, and the Grinch characters roaming the streets, horse-drawn carriage rides, and so much more. Frosty Friday is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., on November 24. December is a special month in the downtown. Holiday lights line the trees along historic streets, holiday cheer is in the air, and few things are as captivating as the image of Downtown Frederick blanketed in snow. Downtown Frederick Partnership presents not one, but four special Saturday events throughout the month – The Four Saturdays in December – Eat, Drink, Be Merry, & Shop. All four events will feature holiday music, live entertainment, free hot cocoa and s’mores and a Downtown Frederick Recipe Book activity. Green Vested Volunteers By: Sharon M. Hannaby, BA, MS, Director, Volunteer Services Frederick Memorial Healthcare System

The Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary recently celebrated its 60th anniversary serving the hospital and the surrounding community. The dynamic group of green-vested volunteers shares time and talent in a wide variety of service areas. In fact, it would be difficult to go to the hospital without coming in contact with one of them during your visit. Annually, nearly 800 volunteers give more than 97,000 hours — this includes adult volunteers who are Auxiliary members, as well as college and high school students. Auxiliary volunteers work at information desks, assist with patient discharges, make deliveries, offer books and magazines to patients, manage the gift shop, and serve in many of the hospital departments offering non-medical care of patients and performing clerical tasks.

22

FALL 2012

Volunteering reaches beyond the main hospital building, as volunteers assist at the various offsite locations throughout the Frederick Regional Health System. They also operate one of the best thrift shops in the region, Select Seconds, at 8 E. Patrick St., in downtown Frederick. In addition to all of the time shared, the Auxiliary also raises funds for the health system. Auxiliary-sponsored fundraising activities include the gift shop and thrift shop as well as special sales events with vendors, such as book sales and uniform sales. This past year, the Auxiliary gave more than $260,000 to the hospital, to help purchase special equipment and fund scholarships for nurses to advance their education.

Annually, nearly 800 volunteers give more than 97,000 hours — this includes adult volunteers who are Auxiliary members, as well as college and high school students. During its 60-year history, the Auxiliary has given more than $8.7 million to the hospital. From the first fundraiser in 1952 to help purchase air conditioners for operating rooms to the present day, this group has been working to support the hospital as it has grown to become the Regional Health System we know today. Research shows that volunteering improves your health in many ways — emotionally, and even physically. Volunteering also improves self-esteem, helps develop empathy for the problems of others, affirms personal values, and aids in personal development. Volunteering helps you feel connected to your community, and is a great opportunity to meet new people. If you are interested in becoming a part of this dedicated group of individuals, contact FMH Volunteer Services at 240-566-3567 or visit www.fmh.org/volunteer.

frederick county history

Genealogical Research By: Rebecca Crago, Research Center Coordinator, Historical Society of Frederick County Tracing African-American ancestors prior to the Civil War presents one of the biggest obstacles in American genealogical research. After emancipation, lineage can be traced in many of the same ways as European ancestry, with the use of vital records, census records, church records, etc. It is important, however, to be aware that in Maryland and other old slave states, most birth, marriage, and death records were recorded separately from white records until the end of segregation. To begin African-American genealogical research, follow the same principles as you would for any ancestral research: start with oral histories from your relatives and then direct your search to the U.S. Census. The first federal census, taken in 1790, lists free African Americans who were heads of households by name, while other household members are numbered. Slaves are listed by number under the household of the slave owner. After 1820, the census lists non-heads of household members by number, but within age groups (under 14, 14-26, 26-45, and 45 and over). The census of 1850 is the first to include separate free and slave schedules. Free schedules list by name all members of the household, along with age, sex, color, place of birth, and profession. Slave schedules list the number of slaves by age and sex under the owner’s name. The 1870 census is the first federal census to list all names of people counted.

24

FALL 2012

Researching ancestry prior to emancipation can be cumbersome, but the records do exist. There are numerous types of documentation dealing with the buying, selling, and trading of slaves in the United States, beginning with ship manifests recorded by captains. Once off the ship, if they survived the voyage, slaves’ lives were recorded in a number of ways, most commonly through the business dealings of their owners. These records appear in published abstracts and inventories from the Prerogative Court in colonial Maryland, intestate and administrative accounts, as well as wills and probate records. Slave trading records can be requested through the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and at locations throughout the country, or through the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), and its Family History Centers throughout the country. Bills of sale recording the sale of slaves are largely found within deeds, or land records, which are held at the Frederick County Courthouse. Manumission records are also found within these documents, and efforts to index and publish this information have become more prevalent in recent years. Recently the Commissioner of Slave Statistics Records for Frederick County, Maryland, 1864 was transcribed and published by Richard H. Smith, Jr. Smith also maintains an online tool for local researchers of African-American history: FrederickRoots.com. He is involved in a variety of local African-American research projects.

Another recent title, Frederick County, Maryland Certificates of Freedom, by L. Tilden Moore, is a three-volume set documenting original certificates of freedom, affidavits, and manumissions from the Register of Wills (Frederick County Courthouse) and the Circuit Court department records. Both of these publications, along with reference books on how to research your African-American ancestors are available at the Historical Society of Frederick County, 24 E. Church St., Frederick. To wrap up this final article in my four-part series on genealogy, I will briefly touch upon what to do when you researching your ancestry overseas. The LDS library maintains several databases for international ancestral records. FamilySearch is the umbrella name for the various record aids in their holdings, with various international components including but not limited to: The International Genealogical Index; Personal Ancestral File; Vital Records Indexes; and the Periodical Source Index (PERSI). Unfortunately for many Frederick-based researchers, German ancestry can be the most difficult to trace in Europe since it was not a unified nation until 1871, and was then divided after 1945.

During the period in which Germany was unified, there was little or no attempt to centralize records from places such as Bavaria, Prussia, Saxony, and Bremen. Angus Baxter’s In Search of your European Roots: A Complete Guide to Tracing Your Ancestors in Every Country in Europe provides details for overcoming these investigative barriers for European genealogy, and is part of the Historical Society of Frederick County’s library collection.

After emancipation, lineage can be traced in many of the same ways as European ancestry, with the use of vital records, census records, church records, etc. For questions on Frederick County genealogical research, contact Rebecca Crago at rcrago@frederickhistory.org.

How Much Homeowner’s Insurance Do I need? By: Danielle Leonard, State Farm Agent

As far as your home’s contents are concerned, the best thing to do is take a roomby-room inventory of your valuables. Keep this list somewhere outside the home, for example a safe-deposit box at a bank. How much homeowner’s insurance do you really need? The answer varies, depending on each person’s situation. As a rule, you should insure your home for its whole value, which means the actual building and all of its contents. In order to find out exactly how much your home is worth, you must have it appraised. An appraiser, builder, or insurance agent can give you an estimate on your home’s value. Remember though, if you ever re-model or add on to your home, its value will increase, and you must re-evaluate your home’s worth.

As far as your home’s contents are concerned, the best thing to do is take a room-by-room inventory of your valuables. Keep this list somewhere outside the home, for example a safe-deposit box at a bank. For any particularly valuable possessions kept in your home, you can purchase extended coverage in addition to regular homeowner’s insurance. To determine if valuable possessions, such as televisions, stereos, or computers are covered by your policy, or if you have any other questions about homeowner’s insurance, contact your State Farm Insurance agent.

Free business and job search info available online, everyday By Val Atmonavage, FCPL Community Partnerships Specialist and Marie Slaby, FCPL Development Officer Even if you’ve combed through all the business books available in the Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) system, you may have missed some of the libraries’ best business resources— its online databases. FCPL Information and Technology Manager Teresa Vorce agreed that “library databases offer so much good information, but a lot of people still don’t know they exist.” A database is a searchable collection of information, where you can find articles and the most up-to-date company information and statistics. Each database contains thousands of articles from different sources, which you search simultaneously by keyword. You can cover a lot of ground quickly using databases, finding more hits with higher relevancy than searching in individual

journals or books. And the information is more credible than what you are likely to find by merely searching Google. Databases are available via the Internet on the FCPL website (www.fcpl.org). A library card is your gateway to these comprehensive resources wherever and whenever you are ready to research. Here is a look at some of the most-used business databases FCPL subscribes to, beginning with the categories which fall under the heading Virtual Reference Library. Frederick Community College adds new president, among other changes By: Mike Pritchard

This fall brought several changes for the more than 7,000 students attending classes at Frederick Community College. In addition to welcoming a new president, campus officials opened a new three-story, 350-space parking deck to accommodate growth, a new Enrollment Services building and a new health care training center in Mount Airy. Dr. Frederico Talley became the college’s eighth president on July 1. Dr. Talley has worked at several colleges and universities since 1980 and as vice president and dean of the College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) Leonardtown Campus since 2005.

Dr. Talley helped raise enrollment there to record levels—the CSM campus serves about 8,500 students in credit classes and another 15,000 in workforce programs. He successfully built new partnerships with the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, the Leonardtown Business Association and with local, county, and state legislators. He dramatically raised the profile of that college, and supervised the design and construction of a 32,000 square-foot Wellness and Aquatic Center. He also helped bring a faculty development center and a Student Success Center to the campus.

childcare & education

The new Enrollment Services building will serve as a “one-stop shop” for current and future students who need to register, get information on financial aid, or speak to an academic adviser. Prior to joining FCC, Dr. Talley was also a faculty member at Northwest State Community College in Ohio; was a founding dean of the McMaster School for Advancing Humanity, dean of enrollment management, and professor in the behavioral and applied social sciences at Defiance College in Ohio; president and professor of education at Olivet College in Michigan; associate provost for academic student services and associate professor at Rowan University in New Jersey; vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Bryant University in Rhode Island; and associate dean of student affairs at Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts. Another new addition to campus, FCC’s new parking deck, has received rave reviews from students and employees. During prior semesters, parking was at a premium as students circled the campus to find spaces. While parking areas near the Classroom Student Center still fill quickly, the deck and outlying lots routinely have openings. The new Enrollment Services building will serve as a “one-stop shop” for current and future students who need to register, get information on financial aid, or speak to an academic adviser. Previously, these services were spread across multiple buildings on campus, making the enrollment process confusing for those new to campus. In partnership with Howard and Carroll community colleges, FCC opened the Mount Airy College Center for Health Care Education in August. The center will provide training in a number of health-care professions including health information technology, respiratory care, medical assisting, EMT, as well as short-term and noncredit programs. The changes on the campus landscape this fall are a far cry from when the college first opened its doors 55 years ago to 77 students--as classes were held in the evenings at Frederick High School. The college will continue to adapt and change to meet the educational needs of students of all ages in Frederick County.

Brand-new Center, Brand-new Ideas By: Rachel Pyles

When the First Baptist Church of Frederick relocated from Dill Avenue to Bowers Road in 2008, its members planted a seed of hope to one day open the Little Lights Child Development Center, to reach out and to be a light in the community by helping families and children. After nearly five years, the fruits of the church’s labor have come to fruition. Three years ago the church partnered with Waverley Elementary School in Frederick and have spent the last three years filling backpacks of food for families in need, running free clothing drives, paying for field trips, providing holiday turkey dinners, and providing the needs identified by this school. The relationship between FBC and Waverley Elementary School solidified and highlighted the need for a program for young children that would help families with the high cost of childcare as well as helping families who work unconventional hours.

42

FALL 2012

The church’s future goal is to create after-hours care during which children will receive homework help, dinner, and a safe place to be while their parents are working. Many parents in the region have no choice but to work extended hours into the evening, leaving their children sometimes without adequate care. Income generated from students who attend during the center’s day program will be used to support not only the staff and supplies necessary for an excellent and successful day program, but also to fund an extended-hour child-care session until 10 p.m., provided free to families in need.

The relationship between FBC and Waverley Elementary School solidified and highlighted the need for a program for young children that would help families with the high cost of childcare as well as helping families who work unconventional hours. The Little Lights Child Development Center wants to help children become successful and “shine” academically, spiritually, and socially, while making childcare affordable without compromising the level of care. The center’s teaching staff has studied early childhood education and development and many of them have obtained an associate degree or bachelor’s degree as well. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, offering care for children age 2 and older, including

before- and after-school care. The center currently transports children to and from Whittier and Monocacy elementary schools for before and after-school care. Visit the website www.littlelightscdc.org, to see photos and get to know the teaching staff. Call 301-473-8283, ext. 206, to schedule a tour of the facility, which includes views of Frederick and a large gymnasium.

Questions are the Answer

By: Amanda Changuris Marketing and Communications Specialist Frederick Regional Health System Questions are the Answer: This sounds like the kind of riddlespeak reserved for intense feature-length dramas, but it’s exactly the kind of advice you need to hear before you visit your doctor. It’s a strange phenomenon. We’ll ask 10 questions before we order dinner at a restaurant, 20 or more before we settle on which mobile phone to purchase, but when it comes to our health, we’re stumped.

52

FALL 2012

So, what kinds of questions do you need to ask next time you’re the one sitting on the exam table? The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (www.ahrq.gov) has a tool you can use to build a list based on your medical needs. The agency breaks questions down into categories such as, “Did your clinician give you a prescription?” and “Are you choosing a health plan?” and then provides lists of related questions you may want to ask. You can select the questions you want to ask and print a personalized list to take to your next appointment.

Be your own best advocate and don’t be afraid to speak up; if your doctor makes you feel uncomfortable asking questions it may be time to find another provider. Questions are the answer because you are the most important part of your health care team. You know yourself better than any doctor, nurse, technician, or clinician ever could — so it’s vitally important you understand what’s going on, what’s being asked of you (in terms of a treatment plan, for example) — and why.

Do You Know the Right Questions to Ask?

The agency suggests reviewing the following points as you prepare for an appointment with your doctor:

1. What is the test for?

• Give information tell your clinician about your health history, symptoms, medications and any allergies you have. • Get Information ask questions, take notes — don’t be shy about asking your clinician to repeat information. • Follow Up call if you think of more questions, experience side effects, or if your symptoms get worse. If your doctor asked you to make a follow-up appointment for tests or lab work, take the time to schedule and complete them. • Understand Your Diagnosi sseek out more information from trusted sources (Try www.mayoclinic.com or www.cdc.gov, for example). • Choose Quality Care talk to your clinician about what is best for you: > Getting the services you need when you need them. > Using the right test or procedure to achieve the best possible results. Having the correct questions and getting all of them answered in a way you understand is a great first step toward a healthier lifestyle. Be your own best advocate and don’t be afraid to speak up; if your doctor makes you feel uncomfortable asking questions it may be time to find another provider.

2. H ow many times have you

done this procedure before?

3. When will i get the results? 4. Why do I need this treatment? 5. Are there any alternatives? 6. W hat are the possible complications?

7. W hich hospital is best for my needs?

8. H ow do you spell the name of that drug?

9. Are there any side effects? 10. W ill this medicine interact with medications that I’m already taking?

How to Deal with Family Conflict Caused by Alzheimer’s article contributed by Home Instead of Frederick

Only when families work together as a team can their loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease receive the best love and care possible. Only when families work together as a team can their loved ones living with Alzheimer’s disease receive the best love and care possible. Sadly, an ill loved one is the No. 1 trigger for family conflict, according to a study conducted by the Home Instead Senior Care® network. Coping with the reality of a loved one’s Alzheimer’s disease not only has its emotional difficulties, but also logistical ones, especially in terms of decision-making and bearing the responsibility of caregiving. Despite these challenges, the following tips may help you unite your family around your loved one with Alzheimer’s when that person needs family support the most. Communicate Regularly Don’t allow weeks to turn into months and years of not communicating with family members who you feel should take a vested interest in your loved one’s condition and care. If you’ve fallen out of touch with a member of your family, reach out through a phone call, email, card, or letter.

senior living handling everything on your own unless you tell them what challenges you’re facing and specific ways they can help. As the maxim goes, “a burden shared is a burden halved.” Make Decisions Together Even if you serve as the primary caregiver of your parents, involve your sibling(s) when you need to make a major care decision. Maybe you feel Dad’s Alzheimer’s has progressed to a point where he needs additional assistance, and you’re looking into hiring a professional in-home caregiver for him. Talk through the pros, cons, financial considerations, and possible alternatives with your siblings before you make a decision. Taking their thoughts and opinions into account will help to eliminate any hard feelings, grudges, or resentments. Leave Childhood Rivalries Behind Easier said than done, of course, but try to approach the issue as the adult you are now, not as the younger person your siblings may still see you as. Stepping back and realizing how unresolved issues from long ago influence your present relationships may put a helpful new perspective on your current situation.

Enlist the Help of a Mediator Sometimes family issues become too complicated or emotionally charged to solve on your own. A third-party resource, particularly a professional such as a counselor, mediator, or even a doctor or geriatric care manager, can provide an impartial voice of reason. Only when families work together as a team can their loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease receive the best love and care possible. Remember that regardless of your past history or current situation, all relationships are a work-in-progress. Envisioning how efforts to make amends will ultimately benefit everyone and can help steer you and your family members on a path toward reconciliation. Improved mobility in the “golden years”

By: Ronald S. Laneve, AA-Eastern Mobility

If you live in a two-story house and have difficulty going up and down the stairs, then a stair lift can make that much easier. It can allow you to stay in the home you love instead of moving to an assisted-living facility. The “golden years” are not all that they are cracked up to be, but they are better than the alternative. My wife has severe arthritis, which makes it difficult for her to stand and to walk. My best friend had a stroke several years ago and his mobility is severely limited. They both have something in common: they both resist special equipment to enhance their mobility. My friend who had a stroke would not consider a stair lift until he had fallen down the stairs a few times and needed the rescue squad more than once to get back on his feet. I guess they are like that lady on TV who says, “I don’t want those things; they’re for old people.” They’re in denial!

Eastern Mobility sells, installs, and services all types of mobility equipment. If you live in a two-story house and have difficulty going up and down the stairs, then a stair lift can make that much easier. It can allow you to stay in the home you love instead of moving to an assisted-living facility. Stair lifts are relatively inexpensive, and in reality, a stair lift costs a great deal less than the medical bills would after one bad fall. Scooters and power chairs are extremely affordable, but remember that if you get a scooter or power chair you need to think about how you will transport it and get it in and out of your vehicle. The wide range of mobility equipment for vehicles

FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

63

transportation is amazing. Some small scooters come apart and are easy to load and unload if you are reasonably mobile. For larger scooters and power chairs, several types of lifts and ramps are available to add on to automobiles. The best vehicle to use to transport mobility equipment is a van. Most people who drive a van for a while fall in love with it, as it is easier to get in and out of, and also offers better vision because you sit a little higher up. The extremely large rear door provides for the entry and exit of most chairs, scooters, and other equipment. It is important not to buy a vehicle until you know what type of equipment you will need, so you can be certain that your equipment will fit into the vehicle you purchase. Not all equipment fits into all vehicles. Individuals who are confined to a wheelchair 24/7 may need a lowered-floor minivan or a full-size van with a wheelchair lift. Most individuals sitting in a wheelchair are 50 inches to 51 inches tall from head to floor. A standard minivan has a 44-inch opening and a full size van has a 48-inch opening. The result is that the top of the door opening is usually at the user’s nose level. So, to get a wheelchair-bound person into the van while sitting in a wheelchair, you would have to lower the floor of the van or raise its roof and doors. Both are expensive options. Different types of wheelchair vans include side-entry or rearentry vans with automatic or manual foldout ramps. Some vans come with lifts installed.

Helping an individual with a disability to select mobility equipment is similar to fitting a person for a pair of shoes. Helping an individual with a disability to select mobility equipment is similar to fitting a person for a pair of shoes. It’s important to consider three things when doing this. One is a vehicle, second is the mobility equipment, and third is the individual’s needs and the needs of his or her family. These three pieces must fit together into a perfect circle if they are to result in excellent mobility. Once you have selected the mobility equipment that you need then select the correct vehicle, have the proper equipment installed, and off you go with access to the world! Mobility is more about attitude than anything else. Even if your disability requires you to be in a wheelchair 24/7, this can merely mean that it takes you a little bit longer to get where you are going, along with some specialized mobility equipment to get there. You can truly have access to the world and travel all over it! If you are in need of mobility equipment or would simply like to explore what is available prior to having a need, the staff at AA-Eastern Mobility can explain and demonstrate everything that is available to make it possible for you to have full access to the world for the rest of your life.

Girls Day Out By: Amanda Rodriguez

Frederick County is bursting with fun and exciting ways to spend an evening. Live bands, dancing, theater, and even lively pub crawls can all be found on the city streets of Frederick. If you’re looking to book a memorable date night or enjoy a girl’s night on the town, the possibilities are nearly endless. But, what about a girl’s day out? Did you know that there are multiple day spas in Frederick County, happy, feel-good establishments of relaxation where you can lose yourself with a friend? In an effort to enjoy a wonderful day of reconnection and reinvigoration, I grabbed a pal and headed out to Daisy’s, A Salon and Body Boutique in the Shab Row/Everedy Square area of downtown Frederick. The well-appointed spa provides a serene and relaxing environment. It provides everything from bridal hair and make-up packages to full body waxing in house. You can get massaged, styled, glittered, and glammed in more ways than you can imagine. My friend started her day with a pumpkin anti-aging facial followed by a therapeutic aromatherapy relaxation massage, followed by a pumpkin spice body wrap! Not being much of a massage fan (I know, I’m not sane), I decided to take advantage of some of the beauty services they offer by getting an up-do. It was a very exciting opportunity for a curly-haired girl like myself who hasn’t rocked an up-do of any sort (I don’t count my messy bedtime buns) since my own wedding day.

68

FALL 2012

Following my time in the chair of Sarah Adolf, resident up-do extraordinaire, I was pleasantly surprised with the intricate style she created. Too bad there is no chance I will ever be able to duplicate it on my own. After admiring my hair in the mirror and soliciting compliments from fellow clients, I was whisked away to have my make-up done by Kris Staley. I am convinced that woman is a miracle worker! I am not traditionally much of a make-up wearer (as in I wear foundation, and, um, foundation), but I loved every single brush stroke she applied to my face. Nothing was too heavy. Nothing made me feel oily or sticky. And, when she finished doing her full bridal treatment to my already very married face, I felt like I might even be able to convince my husband to remarry me (note: he loves me bunches, but he hates weddings like nobody’s business).

I do recall that it involves specialized training and being awesome, but that’s about it! While I was getting worked over by Daisy’s bridal team, my friend was being pampered, massaged, wrapped, and rejuvenated by the day spa and in-house skin care professionals. I swear she looked younger the moment I saw her, (boy those pumpkin enzymes are magic!) but maybe that was just joy bursting out of her pores. She was a little worried that she would come out smelling like a freshly baked pumpkin muffin, but while she did smell delicious, it wasn’t an overwhelming pumpkin spice smell... just a soft, warm fragrance that almost made me relax even more, if that is even possible!

I tried to convince Kris to move into my basement, but apparently she really loves her job and would miss making brides around Maryland sparkle for their special days. I finished my day off with an aromatherapy infused mani-pedi. If you don’t know what reflexology is all about, I urge you to contact Daisy’s Salon & Spa to find out. I’d tell you, but I only remember how amazing I felt afterwards. I’m pretty sure that I fell into a pleasure coma the moment she touched me and missed all of the technical details she relayed to me about the technique.

a rts & le i s u r e Asked what she thought of the day and she had three words for me, “Delightful, relaxing, transcendent.” Which is code for AWESOME.

Let’s Eat Getting buffed, beautified, and relaxed to pieces does something fierce to your appetite. So, what better way to follow up a relaxing day at the spa than by finding a nearby eatery to fill your belly? It was either that or I chew my friend’s pumpkin-y delicious scented arm clean off.

Fortunately, located conveniently nearby in the Shab Row area, is the wine bar and eatery, Shab Row Bistro. With its impressive wine list and fun cocktails (they have a mixologist, people!), it is the perfect place to turn a quiet afternoon into a girls-gone-slightly-wild-but-not-over-the-top afternoon party! So we spent the entire time talking about our spouses and complaining about our busy schedules ⎯ I’m still convinced that there is potential for some serious girl’s day out bonding experiences involving specialty cocktails. And also, they have food. Delicious, so-gorgeously-platedyou’re-kind-of-scared-to-touch-it food! Don’t worry, I touched it a lot and was pleasantly surprised to note that every single thing tasted just as fabulous as it looked. My favorite thing? The asparagus soup. I LOVED it! And, I talked about it for days. I’ve never been so excited about soup or asparagus in my life. My gal-pal went with the classic burger served with a Gruyere twist, which was served with perfectly prepared fries. It looked beautiful and my friend declared it one of the best she’s had yet.

70

FALL 2012

Dessert Please Somehow, after all of the edible goodness at Shab Row Bistro, I was able to save room for dessert! Which is fortunate because we decided to end our day with a visit to the local chocolate factory in Shab Row, The Perfect Truffle. Situated just across from Daisy’s, The Perfect Truffle is not only a local favorite, but a tourist destination, too. Probably this is due to the chocolatiers’ ability to turn out some of the tastiest chocolate truffles in the DC Metro area, but I like to think it’s because they have chocolate mixed with bacon. No one in her right mind can turn down bacon-flavored chocolate; it’s not human. I indulged by experiencing a number of their chocolate offerings before calling it a day. Looking to book a girl’s day out of your own? I hope this points you in the right direction, but if you need more ideas, feel free to reach out to us, we’d love to help you find your Frederick County happy place! BURKITTSVILLE Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Burkittsville is a well preserved, virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Churches, houses, and trade establishments along Main Street were bordered at the rear by fields surrounding the town. The mountains rose to the west. To this day, the town retains those early visual characteristics. Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam. The town’s inhabitants fled for safety to nearby villages. Today, many of Burkittsville’s residents commute to jobs in the nearby metropolitan areas, but the town maintains a strong sense of community through its many services, social activities, special events, and town meetings.

TOWN OFFICES & SERVICES

Middletown Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lieutenant George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters, and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be. Mount Airy The Town of Mount Airy is a nationally accredited “Main Street Maryland Community” and holds the State of Maryland’s esteemed “Community Legacy” designation. Located directly off of Interstate 70, it is approximately 45 minutes from both the Baltimore and Washington Metropolitan job markets. One can quickly become enamored with downtown Mount Airy and its small-town charm, quaint old buildings, and friendliness that takes you back to a time long past. Mount Airy has experienced a dramatic increase in growth, but because of effective growth management and land use strategies, still retains that quaint, small-town atmosphere. Myersville

Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Myersville is strategically located halfway between Frederick and Hagerstown, with convenient access from Interstate 70 to the south and US Route 40 to the north, yet nicely buffered from both by a mile of local road. The outstanding location and beautiful, hilly terrain combined to make the town an attractive location for residential development during the last decades of the 20th century. Today, Myersville takes care to ensure by ordinance and zoning control that its attractive location is matched by attractive development. The Canada Hill development and three other developments built in the 1990s—Ashley Hills, Meadowridge, and Terraces of South Mountain—exemplify the same standards of appearance set by the town. Walkersville Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Walkersville has managed a rapid population growth wisely, enabling it to maintain a friendly, small-town atmosphere. Burgess

Woodsboro Source: www.mdmunicipal.org Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. After the Civil War, the town developed some notoriety as a train stop that offered exceptional accommodations and relaxing pursuits. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town. There are small commercial activities and service providers within the town itself. Burgess
