HIS TORY \ \
MUSIC HAS LONG TRADITION in Frederick County BY MARY BOSWELL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, HERITAGE FREDERICK
[Music] is something that everyone can relate to, something that’s inherent in our being. Everyone has a heartbeat, everyone has a sense of rhythm . . . It’s a social, biological thing.
-Scott Ambush, on the magic of music When Frederick County was formed in 1748, immigrants brought their musical traditions with them. After arriving in the New World, they acquired new experiences that affected their music. From the time of early settlement to today, artists who were born here, raised here, and/or worked here, have contributed to the evolution of Frederick’s music scene. One of the earliest examples of music recorded and performed in colonial Frederick comes from the beautifully hand-illuminated songbooks of German immigrant Johannes Thomas Schley (1712-1790), one of the first settlers of Frederick. Schley worked as a schoolmaster, choirmaster and organist for the German Reformed Church. According to a traveling Reformed minister, Schley was the “best schoolmaster . . . in America. He spares neither labor nor pains in instructing the young and edifying the congregation.”
Johannes Schley’s songbooks show a great deal of sophistication. They include a wide variety of music, as well as music theory and charts in English, and a quotation from Shakespeare on music. Photo courtesy of Heritage Frederick.
Schley began recording in his music books in Germany and included chorales, psalms, works by Handel and Corelli, as well as country dance tunes and American patriotic and English theater songs. He also documented his own sonatas, organ preludes and other compositions. These were nearly all copied for pianoforte, harpsichord or organ. Schley’s son, John, carried on the family tradition. In 1776, the Continental Army’s capture of the Hessian soldiers who fought on behalf of the British government at the Battle of Trenton was a significant moment not only in the American Revolutionary War, but also in the daily life of Frederick residents. The captured Hessians were imprisoned in Frederick, and after the war many stayed here rather than return to Germany. Hessian musicians made public performances, and one Hessian corporal, Philip Phile, settled in Philadelphia as a composer, conductor and instrumentalist. His composition “The President’s March” appears in Schley’s songbook. Schley lived 4 miles from the Hessian prison. After Schley died, another Hessian, William Peter Hardt, replaced him as the organist for the German Reformed Church in Frederick. Another contributor to the national music scene was Frederick’s own Francis Scott Key (1779-1843). After the War of 1812, Key wrote lyrics to “The Defence of Fort M’Henry,” which he set to a familiar tune that had originated at a men’s social club. With Key’s inspiring words and choice of popular tune, the song was quickly reproduced in newspapers and broadsides. Within 2 months, Baltimore publisher Thomas Carr issued the first sheet-music arrangement, and the title evolved into “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which eventually became our national anthem. With the 19th century came improved living standards and even more choices for musical entertainment. One of Frederick’s leading citizens, Jacob Engelbrecht (1797-1878), recorded in his diaries a vibrant music scene. Engelbrecht was the son of a Hessian soldier

who had been imprisoned in Frederick and had decided to stay. A tailor, lead chorister, band musician and mayor, Engelbrecht was active in the Lutheran Church, which served Frederick as a both a spiritual center and a community music center. Engelbrecht and members of his family were participants in the church’s band. His son, Philipp, conducted the groups for the Centennial Celebration in 1876. His nephew, John Conrad Engelbrecht, was a composer and musician. Another Frederick contributor to the national music scene was Barbara Fritchie (1766-1862), although her fame was not of her
own intent. After her death, the nationally known poet John Greenleaf Whittier published a poem about her in “The Atlantic Monthly” magazine in 1863. According to a story that is still not proven, Fritchie waved the Union flag in defiance of Confederate soldiers marching by her house. Whittier’s poem inspired a host of commercial products, including a play, a song, an operetta and three silent films. “My Maryland,” a musical romance, was based on Clyde Fitch’s play, “Barbara Frietchie (sic), the Frederick Girl,” completed in 1899. The music for “My Maryland” was written by Sigmund Romberg, with book and lyrics by Dorothy Donnelly. The operetta opened at Jolson’s Theater in New York in 1927. Fall 2017 // FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

African Americans contributed to the music scene from the earliest days of their arrival in the New World. White audiences often relied upon African-American musicians for entertainment. In his journal while visiting Maryland in the 1770s, Nicholas Cresswell described “less privileged” whites as having a barbecue and dancing “to some Negro tunes under a large Tree. A great number of young people met together with a Fiddle and Banjo played by two Negroes, with Plenty of Toddy.” African-American spirituals, hymns, camp-meeting songs and work songs provided comfort and support through the Civil Rights era.

Brass bands also provided inspiration and entertainment, performing at fairs, taverns, circuses, horse races and Fourth of July celebrations. Although commonplace today, band music did not exist in Frederick County schools until the early 20th century. S. Fenton Harris (1883-1979), the “Father of School Bands,” introduced music into Frederick’s school system in 1913. As a musician, Harris was self-taught. He attended a two-room school near Yellow Springs and graduated from Boys High School in Frederick in 1903. He later earned various degrees through correspondence courses. After teaching himself to play several

In 1913, while head of the Boys High School’s commercial department, Harris organized a marching band to help the school’s cadet corps. The young musicians bought their own uniforms and borrowed instruments to practice weekly in the library after school. Harris also formed a concert band, which gave annual performances for the school and the community. Soon nearly every high school in Frederick County had a band. Harris retired from his band and orchestra work in 1940. Another contributor to the national music scene is Tracie Luck. A mezzo soprano, Luck was Miss Frederick 1993 and Frederick’s Young Woman of the Year in 1992. She made her New York City Opera debut in the title role of “Margaret Garner,” an opera by Grammy award-winning composer Richard Danielpour and librettist Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison. In 2009 Luck made her Carnegie Hall debut with world renowned opera singer Jessye Norman and The Roots in “Ask Your Mama,” composer Laura Karpman’s multimedia work based on Langston Hughes’ epic 1961 poem. The second half of the 20th century was a great time for music in Frederick. The Jade Brothers, The Shades and Damien and the Classics were playing the clubs and the high school dances. By the 1970s, Demitri Callas was touring with Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons. Gary St. Clair’s album was selling out in the records department at Montgomery Ward. The country music scene was going strong at the Golden Horseshoe, with Don Barns and Debbie Williams, Jeannie C and the Country Caravan, Allen
Brown and the Wishing Well. Rock ‘n Roll was bringing in the crowds at the Rabbit’s Foot and Lucas McCains and the Red Horse with Too Many People and Marlin King and Joker’s Wild. Band uniforms were in vogue at the time—all the boys had matching crushed velvet tuxedos. About this time disco took a bite out of the live music scene. An alternative to disco emerged on Market Street when the Carroll Creek Dam opened in 1978 with music seven days a week. This small venue, at 39 S. Market St., gave a stage to novice and seasoned musicians alike. A teenage Scott Ambush could often be seen. Ambush went on to join the internationally renowned jazz fusion group Spyro Gyra. The live music scene thrives to this day in Downtown Frederick with places such as Café Nola, the Cellar Door, Champions, and Vini Culture providing space for local acts. Fuzzy Match, Hard Swimmin’ Fish and Silent Old Mountains are the new names in a very old music scene.
+ Thanks to Ken Kerr for reporting on today’s music scene, and to David K. Hildebrand and his new publication, “Musical Maryland: A History of Song and Performance from the Colonial Period to the Age of Radio.” This book is available at Heritage Frederick, a nonprofit educational and cultural organization located at 24 E. WHAT DO REALTORS DO ALL DAY?
BY KAREN HIGHLAND, COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, FREDERICK COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS
A Realtor.com survey found that for every hour an agent spends in your presence, he or she will spend an average of nine hours out of eyesight, working on your behalf. Unlike many professions, in which people are paid hourly or are on a salary with weekly or bi-weekly paychecks, in most cases agents don’t get paid until the deal closes. In the meantime, they are doing a litany of tasks for weeks, sometimes months, to accomplish a successful real estate settlement. In today’s complicated real estate environment, those tasks are many. While each day is different, here’s some insight into the what, when, where and why in the day of a Realtor®. Knowing the Local Market Both buyer’s agents and seller’s agents must keep an ongoing understanding of the homes that are on the market, the homes that have recently sold, as well as the latest market statistics in every neighborhood, community and area in which they work. Proficient agents must know the market trends, such as how long homes are taking to sell, what the average and median prices are, how much sellers are getting in sales price, compared to their list price, and much more. Staying on top of the market takes hours of research, whether it’s combing the multiple list service daily to see what’s new on the market, or seeing what the sales prices were, or how much homes are selling for on average compared to their list price, or conducting numerous comparative market analyses (CMA). The inventory and data is changing every day and requires constant review.

(CFPB) and the Federal Trade Commission. Buying and selling real estate is complicated in 2017 and is governed by state and numerous jurisdictional contracts and addenda. Maryland contracts are upwards of 35 to 50 pages these days, depending on the jurisdiction. A Realtor® must stay aware and informed on all real estate laws and forms used in the process. In an effort to be a trusted adviser to their clients, Realtors® take hours of required continuing education every two years, as well as untold hours of non-accredited education to enhance their business acumen, and their skills. Real estate is one of the top industries affected by constantly advancing technologies. Today’s real estate agents must stay on top of the latest tools available to best serve their clients.
Communication and Follow-up
Market knowledge also requires that agents personally tour homes, whether through broker’s opens or a personal preview. Real estate agents must be familiar with nuances in home styles, floor plans, construction details, and more, to provide information to their buyers and their sellers. Knowledge of the lifestyle and amenities afforded by various neighborhoods and communities is crucial.
Much of a real estate agent’s day is spent in communicating. The mobile phone is a constant companion, with text messages, emails and old-fashioned phone calls an ever-present aspect of business. Whether communication comes from buyers, sellers, cooperating agents, lenders, title services, inspectors, office personnel or third-party vendors, communication and follow-up is vital in today’s on-demand world of business. It rarely, or never, ends at 5 p.m., Friday afternoon.

NEW ESCAPE ROOM EXPERIENCE Opens in Mount Airy Kristen Ellis and Lisa Yzaguirre met many years ago, when their children began attending the same Frederick-area preschool, and have been friends ever since. Their children are much older now, and their friendship has endured the test of time, and also the test of building a business together. Ellis and Yzaguirre recently celebrated the opening of their business, Enter Exit Escape, in Mount Airy. It’s an escape room experience, a live action game during which a group of players works together to look for clues and solve puzzles that will lead to their escape of the room. Each room is built on themes that are accessible to all, which was important to both women. “Our themes and rooms are not scary, they are interesting and fun, but they are challenging,” Ellis said. “Although everyone will have a grand time and a full experience, only some will escape with the glory of a completed mission.” Ellis and Yzaguirre were the 2016 winners of the Carroll Biz Challenge, and were awarded $5,000 toward opening Enter Exit Escape. In August, they opened their doors and welcomed the first players into their labor of love. “Our friendship has grown ever stronger since embarking on this business partnership,” Ellis said. “And we are both fortunate to have wonderfully supportive and helpful husbands and families who have encouraged us and been patient with us during this exciting, but challenging, journey.” We asked Ellis and Yzaguirre to tell us about the experience of opening Enter Exit Escape, and to share the challenges and successes of beginning their business. Q How would you describe your business to someone who knows nothing about it? A An escape room, in general, is a themed room filled with clues, codes and puzzles that a group of up to 10 adventurers must find, solve and put together in order to complete a mission before time runs out. Whether they complete their mission within the 60 minutes or not, we 24
thefrederickguide.com
want our escapees to leave feeling like their experience was engaging, interactive, challenging, immersive, rewarding, exciting and memorable. We aim to provide a friendly atmosphere with top-notch customer service and high-quality games that will leave participants excited and ready for more. Our weekend customers include a wide variety of groups, from teams of friends, couples and families, to ladies or guys having a unique night out. Our weekday customers include groups of coworkers looking to have a valuable team-building experience, which may include a workshop led by a professional team-building facilitator. Our fully equipped conference room and tailored event space offers businesses, groups or teams a comprehensive, professional and unique performance improvement solution designed to provide benefits far beyond a thrilling escape room experience. Q Describe when and how your business got started — where did the idea come from? A Early in 2016, we were victorious in our first escape room mission. With a group that included individuals ages 12 to 72, we were thrilled to have found an activity that could engage and excite
// BUSI N E S S
Q Why is the Frederick County region a great home for your business? A Frederick County is a lively area full of folks who are excited to try new things, engage with others and challenge themselves in a fun atmosphere. Residents are genuinely interested in getting to know local business owners and feel like they are a part of something personal and unique. Mount Airy lies on the eastern side of Frederick County, which is easy to access and boasts a whole host other great places to explore, including top-notch wineries, breweries, distilleries, restaurants, hiking and walking areas and a vibrant downtown district. Some who book an escape room like to make a day of it.
three generations at once! We knew we wanted to bring this kind of unique fun to our hometown. We started working on the idea as an independently owned escape room venue in March 2016 and opened a year-and-a-half later in our beautiful new building in Mount Airy. Q What lessons have you learned in creating this business? A With all that goes into starting a small, independently owned business, we have learned the value of staying true to ourselves and networking with other amazing people and businesses in the region. The encouragement, support, and resources we have received and, in turn, shared with others, have been phenomenal and crucial. We believe our success lies in being active members of our community by positively impacting individuals and teams and working cooperatively with a variety of local partners to foster wellness and growth. We hope this goal shines through as customers engage with us and with the games we have created.
Q What are your backgrounds, including education and training, and how has that helped in starting this business? A With backgrounds in education and mental health, we have always worked to support people in being their best selves. Both of our families are longtime residents of Mount Airy, with more than 60 years combined! We are deeply invested in and active members of our community, continually looking for ways to help our region and its residents thrive. Given our passion for games and a desire to take on a new challenge in our own lives, the idea of opening an independent escape room took hold. We accessed every resource we could find for new businesses, including SCORE mentors, classes at FCC, Frederick County Chamber of Commerce networking events, entrepreneur trainings, online workshops and the advice of other escape room owners. We have been overwhelmed by how knowledgeable, welcoming and supportive everyone in the county has been.

HOME-SCHOOLING Offers Alternatives for Frederick Families BY DIANA MOTA
Parents of school-aged children choose home-schooling for a variety of reasons. For Wendy McLean, of Frederick, it just made sense and it fit well with her family’s life.
iSTOCKPHOTO.COM/ MONKEYBUSINESSIMAGES
Her husband’s job with the U.S. Army Crops of Engineers has meant multiple moves, but her children’s education has remained consistent. The mother of three has always home-schooled her children, now ages 14, 16 and 18. She initially made the decision after reading about how parents establish attachments with their children and then send them to a stranger to teach them. Intuitively, it did not make sense to her. “Home-schooling is a great responsibility,” McLean said, “but it’s never felt like a lot of work.” Each state has its own laws about home-schooling, McLean said. Under Maryland law, home-schooled children must receive “regular, thorough instruction during the school year in the studies usually taught in the public schools to children of the same age,” according to the Maryland State Department of Education website. At least 15 days prior to starting a program, parents or guardians must sign and submit to the local superintendent, or other designee, a Maryland State Department of Education form that indicates their consent to home instruction requirements. McLean considers Maryland requirements as “easy to follow,” she said. Twice each year, parents either meet with someone from the local school system or someone from a nonpublic school that holds a Certificate of Approval from the Maryland State Department of Education; a church-exempt nonpublic school; or an institution (education ministry) offering an educational program operated by a bona fide church organization. “It’s their choice,” McLean said. At the start of her school year, McLean presents her plans for each of her children to her designee and then at the end of the school year, she reviews with her what they did. “It proves we’re doing what we say we’re doing,” she said. To demonstrate what students do, parents maintain portfolios throughout the year for each of their children, McLean said. For
26
thefrederickguide.com
example, her children’s portfolios may contain anything from examples of work to ticket stubs for an event they attended, she added. During the review process, if the designee deems a program as deficient, parents have 30 calendar days from receipt of the written notification to provide evidence that the deficiency has been or is being corrected, the state website states. Parents have a lot of flexibility and choices when it comes to selecting, delivering and using a curriculum or instructional materials. Some families mimic the regular school year, while others adjust schedules to accommodate their families, McLean said. Programs do not have to align with Maryland’s College- and CareerReady Standards, but certain subjects are mandatory, including English, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, health and physical education. A quick search online will uncover so many options, McLean said. Parents can choose curriculum-in-a-box programs or develop their own using textbooks, unit studies, online courses, and other instructional materials or delivery methods. In addition, they can teach their children inside or outside their home, or arrange for individualized instruction delivered by
iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / SOLSTOCK
// E D U C AT I O N
another person. Regardless of how they deliver the program, they remain responsible for complying with state regulations. McLean somewhat follows an educational method and philosophy known as unschooling, where children learn through everyday experiences, including play, household responsibilities, personal interests or natural curiosity, she said. She develops her own lessons as well as participates in an educational co-op that “meets once a week and offers loads of classes for all ages,” she added. Co-op arrangements vary widely, McLean said. Some of them focus on particular subjects or interests. Regardless, the state website cautions that these arrangements “can supplement a program, but they cannot provide regular daily instruction to an organized group of students who are not in the same family because this may constitute an unapproved nonpublic school.” (For a list of some of the co-ops in the Frederick area, visit www. frederickhomeschooling.com/co-ops--groups.html.) Socialization has never been a concern, McLean said. If anything, her children’s interaction with others has not been limited to one type of socialization such as in a school setting, she explained.
If parents choose, their home-schoolers may participate in regularly scheduled standardized testing programs administered by the public school system. And upon acceptance and admittance, they may enroll in courses offered by accredited or unaccredited colleges. Similarly, they can participate in private school courses. In addition, students who meet Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association standards are allowed to “compete as a member of a private school sports team against MPSSAA member schools. Such participation, however, is at the discretion of the private school,” according to the state. Upon completion of a home-school program, secondary students will not receive a Maryland high school diploma, unless they successfully complete the General Educational Development (GED) test. “If a child is 16 years old or over, and is either participating in a home instruction program or has completed such a program, he or she may register for the GED test,” according to the state website. Other options for a high school diploma allow for parents or a supervising nonpublic school or institution to issue their own diplomas as long as it does not imply that it is a state diploma.

MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION Offers Vital Services to Frederick BY KATE BURKE, DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING DIRECTOR, MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION OF FREDERICK COUNTY
Mental health matters: Nothing does more to shape the course of our lives. Our mental health empowers us to connect with others, and to become the people we want to be: good friends, family members, colleagues and neighbors.
iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / WAVEBREAKMEDIA
Since 1965, the Mental Health Association of Frederick County (MHA), a private, nonprofit organization, has been a leader in providing mental health services to our community. MHA’s Counseling Services program provides accessible and affordable mental health services to Frederick County residents. Most clients served have no health insurance and have low or moderate income. MHA therapists provide services in a confidential and supportive environment for issues such as: • Depression • Anxiety disorders • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity (ADHD) • Anger management • Child behavior issues • Couples/marital issues • Life transitions or trauma MHA’s Counseling Services’ goal continues to be providing critically needed individual, couple, and family services in a timely and effective manner. In 2016, to better serve the Frederick community’s needs, MHA added a child and adolescent psychiatrist. Clients are covered by Medical Assistance, Medicare or may access MHA’s sliding scale fee, which is based on annual household income and family size. Client fees, along with public grants and private donations, help fund this vital program. Counseling Services also serves as a clinical field placement for graduate students training to be mental health professionals.

SOAR AIMS TO HELP Older Fredericktonians SOAR, Supporting Older Adults through Resources, Inc., formed its board through a desire to make a difference in the lives of seniors in Frederick County who are having challenges meeting their basic needs. These challenges may be financial, may be access to needed resources, and may be education as to what is available to older adults, their families, and caregivers, to help ease those burdens. SOAR’s mission is to provide financial assistance to older adults in Frederick County, to help meet their essential needs in a confidential, respectful and dignified manner.
and other equipment has been purchased, and an equipment closet allows SOAR to donate gently used home medical equipment to seniors to help with functioning more independently and safely
Seniors are the largest growing population in our community and the limited number of resources for seniors without the finances to meet their own needs is even greater than most can imagine. Many older adults who have served our country, communities and families in countless ways now struggle to meet their basic needs. The members of SOAR pledge to help alleviate those burdens.
SOAR, in essence, bridges the gap of services and makes a difference every day in Frederick County.
+ To apply for services, call 240-575-9665 or apply online at www. soarfrederick.org.
SOAR’s purpose is to: • Provide much-needed support to vulnerable seniors to help them obtain unmet essential needs such as physician-ordered medications, transportation, food and in-home support. • Assist as many seniors as possible with connections to services in our community. • Provide resources, support and education to families and caregivers of seniors in need. • Be a voice that encourages the community to come together to make a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable older adults. SOAR assists anyone who is a Frederick County, Maryland resident, aged 65 and older, with a monthly income of $2,100 for an individual, or $3,000 for a couple. SOAR volunteers and board members work tirelessly to match the needs requests with an organization currently providing that service. SOAR then attempts to work with the organization to determine if the service can be done free, at a reduced rate, or SOAR pays the organization for performing the needed service to a senior in need in Frederick County. The members of SOAR are proud to have helped the homeless to be re-housed, relocated seniors living in sub-par conditions to a safe environment, paid for countless medications, purchased grocery gift cards for food, obtained in home care (short-term) and paid for utility bills to keep seniors warm. SOAR has also completed countless home modifications for safety to include obtaining and installing stair lifts, ramps, grab bars, and replaced stairs in homes for safety. The program has also obtained beds when a few seniors were without a bed to sleep on and obtained lift chairs for those needing the added assistance getting up and down. Each year, commuters find some relief from commuting stress during summer months, when more people are on vacation and the roads are clearer. So, September traffic may come with shock as people get back into the hustle and bustle of a new school year and everything that comes with it. Studies conducted within the Washington, D.C., region show time spent in traffic will jump from 15 percent of your commute to 45 percent from late summer to early fall. To limit September shock with your commute, start planning for alternatives. Here’s a quick guide to assist you in finding the best alternative to driving alone. iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / STEFANOLUNARDI
1. MARC Train – This train conveniently connects Frederick County residents to Washington, D.C. and many points in between. The Brunswick Line has 9 departure times from Frederick County in the morning, with 10 return trips to Frederick County in the evening. TransIT Services of Frederick County has two Meet-the-MARC bus routes to help connect riders from the Point of Rocks MARC station to Frederick and Walkersville. 2. MTA Commuter Bus – This bus runs three different routes from Frederick County to the Shady Grove Metro Station and points as far east as College Park. The three routes from Frederick County are the 505, 515 and 204, with multiple departure and return trip times available for commuters. 3. Vanpools & Carpools – Commuter Connections provides a free ride-matching database for commuters to find carpools commuting to the same location during similar hours. Larger groups of commuters with similar commute patterns can set up a vanpool to get to and from work. New vanpools departing from or arriving in Frederick County are eligible for a financial incentive for any unused seats for the first year of operation. If any of these options will not work for you, then try to work with your employer to see if flexible scheduling is available to avoid peak commute times or telework at home a few days each week.

All current schedules and listed information can be found on TransIT’s website under Commuter Assistance at www. frederickcountymd.gov/transit. Don’t forget, if you take public transit or carpool at least twice each week, you are eligible for “Guaranteed Ride Home,” a ride free service up to four times per year available to commuters to get you home in cases of illness, family emergency or unscheduled overtime.
+ For more information on alternative commutes or for assistance on commute planning, contact TransIT Rideshare by calling 301600-RIDE or e-mail transitrideshare@frederickcountymd.gov.

Get lost in nature JUST MINUTES FROM THURMONT BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE

Summer may be the busiest season for Cunningham State Falls State Park, located in the Catoctin Mountains of Thurmont, but you’d be hard pressed to find a more beautiful location in the autumn for fall foliage. Paint samples at home improvement stores can’t match all the different hues of red, orange and yellow visible to folks who hike, camp or visit the park.
iSTOCKPHOTO.COM / COAST-TO-COAST
“Fall is actually my most favorite time of the year here because it’s so cool and crisp and it’s not as crowded but you can still get to trails and enjoy the season,” says Mark Spurrier, park manager. “[The park is] a great place to come to because it is close to major avenues of travel, but it is off the beaten path enough to that you don’t have the traffic. You get a chance to just experience nature in a variety of ways depending on what time of year you come. “It is very peaceful. The waterfall area — if you can get there early in the morning and just sit and listen to the water coming down and watch the leaves change in the color of the trees — it is a great place for personal reflection.” Folks who visit the park now and during the coming months will notice a number of construction projects designed to improve guests’ experiences. Crews are working to replace and upgrade the park’s water treatment plant and distribution lines near the William Houck day-use and campground area. The South Beach area will be closed to the public beginning in September while crews complete the job. Fall 2017 // FREDERICK COUNTY GUIDE

Other day-use area projects include renovating the Houck Nature Center to do more educational programs to give children and adults a chance to experience nature in a different way, upgrading South Beach picnic pads and redoing beach area to conserve sand to help improve water quality and expanding the entrance station to help reduce lines. Probably the most noticeable change — at least for families — is the disappearance of the Manor Area Playground, better known as Tire Park. The site no longer met current safety standards, so the creative, repurposed rubber tire structures were removed and will be replaced with a new accessible play area. Spurrier says the large amount of rain over the summer months has caused delays in the installation. The nearly 50-year-old park has far surpassed its original design, so in order to meet the needs of guests, Spurrier says the improvements and updates are needed. “We are working very hard to preserve and protect some of our historic structures so that they are here for generations,” he said. “It is all for the future and it is all right now so it is a very exciting time. The next couple years at Cunningham Falls is going to be something new for everybody.” The 43-acre manmade Houck Lake and 78-foot falls are just two of the reasons why folks from all over flock to Thurmont, 64

no matter the season. The President of the United States even comes to the small town, which hosts the retreat Camp David, built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and named Shangri-La by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. President Dwight D. Eisenhower renamed the retreat in honor of his father and grandson, both named David. Thurmont was founded in 1751, and the town was originally known as Mechanicstown before its name was changed in 1894 by an act of the Maryland General Assembly. At the time, the town had about 1,000 residents. In 2010, the U.S. Census estimated the town had more than 6,000. In an effort to keep history and cultural heritage alive, the volunteerrun Thurmont Historical Society is open for tours on Sundays at its historic home known as Creeger House. Formerly the home of Civil War colonel and prominent state politician John R. Rouzer, the society moved to the location in 1989. Home to many town artifacts along with ancestral records, the society is currently in a fundraising campaign to save the historic brick and mortar facade. In October, the town holds its nationally recognized arts and crafts festival, known as Colorfest. This year, the historical society will host a biergarten in its backyard to help raise funds: “an Oktoberfest during Colorfest,” jokes Donna Voellinger, society president.

A Colorado native who moved to Thurmont in 1974, she encourages folks to stop in during regular hours or by appointment to visit the society to see what they have on display. “I think people are amazed (by what we have),” she said. “They will come in and say ‘Oh, I never knew that was there!’” Thurmont has many activities for families and groups to enjoy. Who needs D.C. or Baltimore when you’ve got the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve and Zoo. The 100-acre nonprofit animal sanctuary features a bevy of mammals, reptiles and amphibians, including wallabies, alligators, a jaguar and emus. While some zoos have a look-but-don’t-touch rule, Catoctin Zoo allows guests to feed some of their animals by purchasing approved feed located near the enclosures. For an even greater interactive experience, add on a daily safari ride, during which you will get to feed North American bison, Asian and African antelopes and European deer. Another can’t- miss experience is the canary feeding during the summer months. Guests are escorted by staff into the enclosure and given sticks caked with approved seed. Have your camera ready because the birds will land on heads, arms and shoulders in order to get first dibs on the meal.

For those looking for a wedding or corporate meeting venue, ThorpeWood is a 155-acre mountain retreat that will make you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, yet still close to town. Its annual open house event is a highlight of the holiday season. This year, it’s set for 3-8p.m., on Dec. 9. Another fun spot that should be on your radar is Catoctin Mountain Orchard, a locally owned spot where you can pick your own produce, including apples, black raspberries, dark sweet cherries and blueberries. If you need a floral centrepiece to go with a meal, try the half-acre flower garden, where you may cut your own flowers, choosing from more than 25 varieties. For those who just want to relax, head to the orchard’s bakery, where delicious homemade desserts such as cookies, bread, pies and cake, are just waiting to be consumed. PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID S. Only six covered bridges remain in the State of Maryland, and three of them are in Northern Frederick County. Two are in close proximity to Thurmont. They are: Roddy Road Covered Bridge, built in 1856, just north of Thurmont off U.S. Route 15, where Roddy Creek Road meets Roddy Road at Owens Creek; and Loys Station Bridge, built around 1880, and located on Old Frederick Road, just south of Md. Route 77.

Residents (about 6,000 currently), business owners and city officials are stepping up efforts to revive and reinvent their community. Seeking to redefine Brunswick as an attractive outdoor destination, they are working to fill empty downtown storefronts, opening new businesses and building trails for hiking and biking.

With the city working on a new municipal building, a new music and events venue opening downtown, and the continuous expansion of Brunswick Crossing – a population-doubling housing development – Brunswick may finally be on track to change its fortune from the 1950s, when the railroad pulled out of the city abruptly..

Veterans Day Parade Brunswick’s Veterans Day Parade is one of the oldest in the country. It began in 1932, six years before Veterans Day became recognized as a national holiday. Brunswick is one of only two Veterans Day sites in Maryland to be officially sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which allows official military groups — such as the Armed Forces Color Guard of Washington, D.C. — to participate. This year, the event is set for Nov. 5.

BURKITTSVILLE Burkittsville is a virtually unchanged example of an American townscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the town was a service center for the rural area around it. Today, Main Street’s buildings are still bordered by fields of crops and dairy farms, although there are no longer any commercial establishments in the town. Burkittsville became closely involved with the Civil War when forces of the Union and Confederate armies engaged in the Battle of Crampton’s Gap, a bloody prelude to the Battle of Antietam.

EMMITSBURG Emmitsburg, a quiet town nestled at the foot of the mountains, offers peace and tranquility. Incorporated in the early 1800s, Emmitsburg was the home of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. She established the first Catholic school in the U.S., that grew into St. Joseph’s College. The property is now home to the National Fire Academy and Homeland Security. A short drive away is Mount Saint Mary’s University. In Emmitsburg you can relax but still be within driving distance to major cities such as Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Harrisburg. You are just a few miles from the Gettysburg Battlefield, Ski Liberty Resort and numerous golf courses.

MIDDLETOWN Middletown is a small, rural community steeped in American history. It is located in the beautiful Middletown Valley that stretches between the Catoctin Mountains on the east and South Mountain on the west. A young Lt. George Washington, while surveying the South Mountain area, reported that the valley to the east was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Middletown continues to evolve from a settlement of farmers and ranchers to one of tradesmen, craftsmen, businessmen, clergymen, commuters and retired folk—without losing its agricultural roots. From the stately old Victorian-style homes and soaring church steeples to the rustic dairy farms and modern housing developments, residents find in Middletown a refuge where they can enjoy small-town life as it used to be.

MOUNT AIRY The Town of Mount Airy is a nationally accredited “Main Street Maryland Community” and holds the State of Maryland’s esteemed “Community Legacy” designation. Located directly off of Interstate 70, it is about 45 minutes from both the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan job markets. One can quickly become enamored with downtown Mount Airy and its small-town charm, quaint old buildings and friendliness that takes you back to a time long past. Mount Airy has experienced a dramatic increase in growth, but because of effective growth management and land use strategies, still retains that quaint, small-town atmosphere. It boasts a booming downtown with community and cultural events, retail establishments, antique and craft collectible shops, cafes and restaurants.

WALKERSVILLE Walkersville is a combination of two villages that were settled by German immigrants in the mid 1700s and early 1800s. By the late 1800s, the villages of Georgetown and Walkersville had grown so intertwined that it made sense to combine them into one entity, which was named Walkersville. Today, Walkersville aggressively pursues fiscal responsibility, recycling projects, and innovation. In 1995, it was credited with having the first State Police bicycle patrol in the nation. There are four schools, residential developments, a shopping center, several businesses and institutions, and numerous restaurants in the town. Walkersville has managed a rapid population growth wisely, enabling it to maintain a friendly, small-town atmosphere.

WOODSBORO Early history suggests that the Woodsboro area was a hunting and trapping ground for a wandering tribe of Susquehanna Indians. From early times, the settlement was located at a crossroads on the Indian trail running from the Chesapeake Bay to the mountains. When the stagecoach became the primary mode of transportation, the place became an important stop on its itinerary. Today, Woodsboro is still primarily an agricultural area, but an important industry is centered on the three lime quarries that border the town.
